On the Road Again

BY SUSAN ROSSER What even is a road trip? Is it five or more hours? Must it include a pit stop or a night at a roadside retreat? These are all questions I pondered as I began to write about my love of the great American road trip.

I’ll start with the snacks.

Procuring treats for a road trip should be done with the frivolous unrestraint of a 7-year-old. One must extinguish all health and budgetary concerns. But while a long car trip is a great excuse to get down with a tube of BBQ Pringles, the snacks are just a tiny part of the joy of car travel.

The real magic happens as a new landscape slowly reveals itself — that sense of sliding into a new place. Letting yourself be transfixed as a flat and seemingly endless landscape slowly morphs into rolling hills, or watch as slender palms give way to massive and tangled oaks. Allowing yourself to be hypnotized by the scenery is restorative. (Of course, if you’re driving, pay attention to the road.)

Years ago, my husband Richard and I rented a car in Las Vegas and drove out to the Grand Canyon. As soon as we realized we could take the iconic route 66, that is the path we chose. We stopped at the Arizona welcome center and asked a receptionist to recommend a lunch spot on the route. He asked what sort of place we were interested in. I replied that we were searching for a spot that is famous for their pies, and the staff knows all the regulars — bonus points if there is a waitress named Flo or Alice. He immediately told us of a spot in Seligman, Arizona.

The place was perfect. We had lunch and shared a slice of cherry pie for dessert.

Don’t get me wrong, I like a Big Mac as much as the next guy. And a trip through the drive-thru is nothing to be embarrassed about. But, with a modicum of iPhone research, you can discover mom-and-pop establishments with a real sense of place.

And then there can be accidental side trips. One time Richard and I, while taking a road trip up the east coast on I-95, decided to take a slightly different route through Pennsylvania. We realized we would be going right through Gettysburg. So, we made an impromptu stop and booked a night in a fabulous inn that had been converted from an old schoolhouse. At the end of the day, we drove over to

the battlefield. Standing on that field as the sun slipped beneath the horizon was as moving an experience as I’ve ever had on any trip. If we had flown up north, I probably would have lived my whole life without ever visiting Gettysburg. But I am so thankful for that experience.

Of course, air travel is terrifically more convenient. And with our busy schedules, many of us can’t afford the luxury of spending days in a car when we can zip to faraway places in a fraction of the time. But making actual travel time an exciting part of any trip, as opposed to a means to an end, is a worthy goal.

A road trip presents all sorts of possibilities — most importantly, it is a chance to create new and meaningful memories. Somehow, something silly always seems to happen on the road.

So stop trying to make good time. Instead, make your time good. Y

Dedication of the new Lighthouse Point Community Center and Fire Station

Lighthouse Point Mayor Glenn Troast and other community leaders recently gathered to dedicate the new Lighthouse Point Fire Station.

The two-story structure is 18,000-square-feet and can withstand category 5 hurricane-force winds. The new station will accommodate at least 24 firefighters and paramedics with individual sleeping quarters, bunker storage, kitchen, dayroom and laundry, and also includes a medical storage training room, decontamination area, offices, a generator and three drive-through emergency vehicle stalls.

Another project that benefited from the City’s bond referendum, is the 8,100-square-foot Lighthouse Point Community Center at Dan Witt Park. The facility will feature a multi-use community center with a concession kitchen, youth game room and two multi-purpose rooms.

Dan Witt Park covers six acres and is home to many youth sports leagues in Lighthouse Point. It boasts basketball, tennis and sand volleyball courts, football and soccer fields, a covered pavilion, picnic tables and a play area. The Community Center is an eagerly anticipated new addition to the community’s park facilities.

Goodbye Pompano Beach Water Taxi

The City has terminated its operating agreement with Pompano Beach Water Taxi, Inc., for water taxi services along the Intracoastal Waterway. In a letter to the City the water taxi operator stated that, due to financial difficulties created by the COVID-19 pandemic, it was no longer able to meet performance requirements — citing shutdowns, lack of ridership, doubling of insurance premiums and labor shortages unforeseen in the original agreement. The water taxi service may come back under a new operator sometime in the future, according to a city official.

Medications and Dental Health - What You Need to Know

BY DR. GABRIELA ESPINOZA Many medications — both those prescribed by a doctor and the ones you buy on your own — affect your oral and dental health.

A common side effect of medications is dry mouth. Saliva helps keep food from collecting around your teeth and neutralizes the acids produced by plaque. Those acids can damage the hard surfaces of your teeth. Dry mouth increases your risk for tooth decay. Your soft oral tissues — gums, cheek lining and tongue — can be affected by medications as well. For example, people with breathing problems often use inhalers. Inhaling medication through your mouth can cause a fungal infection called oral candidiasis. Sometimes called thrush, this infection appears as white spots in your mouth and can be painful. Rinsing your mouth after using your inhaler may prevent this infection.

Cancer treatments also can affect oral health. If possible, see your dentist before beginning treatment. They can ensure that your mouth is healthy and, if necessary, can prescribe treatments to help you maintain good oral health.

Your dentist also is interested in the medications you are taking because many can affect your dental treatments. Your dentist may want to speak with your physician when planning your treatment. Rare but serious jaw problems also can occur in people who’ve received bonestrengthening drugs to treat cancer and, to a lesser extent, osteoporosis.

These are only a few examples of how medications can affect your oral health. Your dentist must know about the medications you are taking to provide the best dental care for you. Tell your dentist about

your medication use and overall health, especially if you have had any recent illnesses or chronic conditions. Provide a health history, including both prescription and over-the-counter products. Always let your dentist know about changes in your health or medications.

Dan Witt Park Is Set to Get New Basketball Courts and Pickleball Courts Dan Witt Park is set to undergo improvements that include two new basketball courts, four pickleball courts and new fencing.

In February, the City Commission approved a contract with Florida Engineering and Development Corporation in the amount of $299,000 for the Dan Witt Park improvements.

Florida Engineering and Development Corporation, based in Hialeah Gardens, was selected from among three companies that submitted bids in response to a Request for Proposals issued by the City in January.

The City will submit for reimbursement of $149,500 of the Dan Witt Park improvements project from the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant that was awarded to the City in 2019. Y

City Commission Prioritizes Infrastructure Projects Targeted for $5.6 Million in Federal Funding The City Commission has prioritized the infrastructure projects it would like to see carried out with $5.64 million in federal funds allocated to the City of Lighthouse Point through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), an economic stimulus bill enacted in March 2021 to help local governments in their ongoing recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

In February, Government Services Group (GSG), the firm hired by the City to provide consulting services related to the ARPA funding, presented the City Commission an outline of potential infrastructure projects that would likely be eligible for the funding based on a review of certain criteria.

The Commission was asked to prioritize the projects, and reached a consensus that it would like City Administration to present studies and cost proposals for street milling and paving phased projects (starting with the city’s main thoroughfares), hydrographic surveying of the city’s canals, canal dredging and raising seawall heights in the city due to anticipated sea level rise.

Several commissioners said they

were inclined to choose projects like milling, paving and dredging because they come directly out of the taxpayers’ pocket.

Paving of the city’s main roads – such as Lighthouse Drive, Sample Road and 39th Street – was a high priority because they are roads that serve everyone in the city, and “it’s money for the general public good.”

The costs of all projects must be encumbered by December 31, 2024, and all ARPA funds must be expended by December 31, 2026, or the City will lose the money.

A portion of ARPA funds can be used for planning purposes, including engineering services.

In February, the City Commission approved a contract with KimleyHorn and Associates for engineering and management consultant services

related to infrastructure projects.

Kimley-Horn will prepare the studies and cost proposals for the five infrastructure projects prioritized by the City Commission.

Kimley-Horn will also assist the City with updating the citywide stormwater master plan, paving and other right-of-way improvements, grant application preparation and Broward County Metropolitan Planning Organization projects.

The firm will also manage the city’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).

Prior to beginning any work, the City will obtain a cost proposal from Kimley-Horn and issue a work order. Compensation for services rendered will be based on the amount of work authorized, and according to a fee schedule.

The initial term of the contract is for three years, with two three-year renewal options.

City Administrator John Lavisky clarified that the consultant Government Services Group is helping the City with how to spend the ARPA funding, and the role of Kimley-Horn is to do the analysis, the design work and to manage the construction. Y

Lighthouse Point Is Seeking a New Fire Chief The City of Lighthouse Point is looking for a new fire chief to replace former Fire Chief Jeff Moral, whose last day on the job was Jan. 28. Moral, who resigned, had been in the position since Jan. 29, 2021. Lighthouse Point Assistant Fire Chief Tony Long is currently serving as acting fire chief.

Since November 2020, following the retirement of former Lighthouse Point Fire Chief Shawn Gilmartin, who was the city’s fire code official/fire marshal, the City of Pompano Beach has provided

the City of Lighthouse Point with services for fire code official/fire marshal, as well as fire plans review and fire inspection services.

The Lighthouse Point Fire Department’s in-house fire inspectors will begin doing fire inspections again on April 1, and the City’s goal is to also bring the fire plans review back in-house.

City’s New Bridge Consultant Is Exploring Options for Alamanda Bridge In January, the City hired KimleyHorn and Associates to provide bridge consulting services on how best to repair or replace the city’s bridges.

The first project in the scope of work is to conduct an analysis of the Alamanda Bridge on NE 24th Avenue (between NE 46th and 47th Streets), which was built in the 1950s and is approaching the end of its service life.

The Alamanda Bridge serves as the single point of access for residents along NE 47th Street, which is a manmade island within Lighthouse Point.

In February, the City Commission approved a work order in the amount of $178,559 for Kimley-Horn to review whether the Alamanda Bridge should be refurbished or replaced, and how much each option would cost.

As a first option, Kimley-Horn will develop a list of repairs needed to rehabilitate the bridge to possibly extend the service life. The consultant will also list the pros and cons associated with repairing the existing bridge.

As a second option, Kimley-Horn will evaluate replacing the existing bridge with a pre-stressed concrete slab bridge. Kimley-Horn will also evaluate the use of a temporary steel truss bridge to maintain a single lane of access to the island throughout construction, as well as the use of precast elements to accelerate the construction.

The third option is to replace the existing bridge with either a box culvert or a precast arch culvert.

the island during construction of the culvert.

Commissioner Jason Joffe said he was in favor of the work order, but “reluctantly” because it includes an option for a culvert.

Last August, a number of residents who live next to the Alamanda Bridge spoke out strongly against a plan the City was considering to replace the Alamanda Bridge with a culvert.

They expressed concern about the aesthetics of a culvert, as well as a possible decrease in water flow that would cause a greater amount of floating debris to accumulate. They also emphasized that Lighthouse Point is a boating community, known for its waterways, and converting the Alamanda Bridge into a culvert would set “a precedent” for other bridges in the city.

The concept of a culvert was taken off the table, and the City decided to hire a bridge engineering consultant to evaluate the Alamanda Bridge, as well as other bridges in the city. Through

a solicitation process, Kimley-Horn was selected based on qualifications.

Joffe said that even though the type of culvert being proposed now is different than the type that was originally proposed, “I still need to see that before I can get behind that.” He noted he was hearing from residents that repair of the bridge was preferable.

Joffe said the opening under the bridge should not be made any smaller than it currently is because there is already a problem with debris buildup. A representative of Kimley-Horn said they want to maintain the existing water flow, if not make it greater.

It was noted that the method used for addressing the Alamanda Bridge will be used as a model for other bridges in the city that connect to island streets.

Last year, the Broward County Commission approved $913,588 in transportation surtax funds for the Alamanda Bridge that might be able to go towards the replacement of the bridge. Y

Broward County Has Multiple Infrastructure Projects Underway in Lighthouse Point Broward County has several water and wastewater infrastructure projects that are either underway or upcoming in Lighthouse Point.

In most cases, there will be traffic impacts.

• The lift station at Lighthouse Drive (NE 22nd Avenue) and NE 25th Street, at the south end of the city, had a failure in February that requires a total refurbishment on an emergency basis. In order to carry out the work, a full-time bypass needs to run to the manhole at the intersection of Lighthouse Drive and NE 25th Street, requiring closure of that section of Lighthouse Drive.

A temporary lift station was set up on site and will be there for the duration of the project until the new pumps are operational.

The project to rebuild the lift station began on March 14, and is expected to be completed 45 to 60 days from the start date.

• A concrete underground vault is being installed on NE 25th Street, just west of Lighthouse Drive (NE 22nd Avenue), to interconnect a Broward County water main with a City of Pompano Beach water main. The two pipes run along NE 25th Street in close proximity to each other. Interconnecting them in the vault will add resiliency to the water system. If either system were to be interrupted due to a storm or other event, the County or Pompano Beach could turn the control valves in the vault and keep the drinking

water supply flowing. The vault project was supposed to start in February, but the contractor is having trouble getting pipes due to supply chain issues, and is working on a revised schedule.

• A sewer force main replacement project will take place on NE 22nd Avenue from NE 41st Street (Lighthouse Drive) to NE 39th Street.

Last year, phase one of the project was completed, which included the replacement of a 6-inch diameter force main on NE 21st Way from NE

38th Street to NE 39th Street and on NE 22nd Avenue from NE 39th Street to NE 44th Street. A larger, parallel force main was replaced on NE 22nd Avenue from NE 44th Street to NE 41st Street. Phase two is a continuation of the larger force main replacement (20-inch diameter pipe), starting at NE 41st Street near the recently refurbished master pump station that sits in the triangular-shaped median. The project is expected to begin in June.

• A water main under the canal at the Sample Road bridge needs to be replaced. The water main was

broken when the sidewalk on the south side of the bridge was being repaired several years ago. The water main is one of two pipes that provide water to the Lake Placid neighborhood. Traffic impacts may involve the closure of one lane, but not a full bridge closure. The project is expected to start at the beginning of April, and may take about 30 to 60 days to complete.

• The recently refurbished master pump station that sits in the triangular-shaped median at NE 41st Street (Lighthouse Drive) and NE 22nd Avenue is awaiting a final inspection from the state before it can start functioning. The state requires an emergency generator be installed to provide power to the pump station in the event of a power failure. The County is currently negotiating with Coastal Community Church (formerly Trinity United Methodist Church), just two blocks away, to get an easement and install the generator there. Once the pump station is certified, the County plans to improve the aesthetics of the pump station with some type of screening for the large above-ground pipes.

• The County’s multi-year project to line the gravity sewer mains in Lighthouse Point is ongoing.

The current work area is south of Sample Road and west of Lighthouse Drive.

The City Commission has requested that a Broward County official present to the Commission an overview of the county’s plan to repair and replace the aging infrastructure in Lighthouse Point, as well as hear the City’s concerns, which might take place at a Commission meeting this month. Y

Isle Casino Pompano Park to Become Harrah’s as Part of Major Makeover Caesars Text starts Entertainment, here owner and operator of Isle Casino Pompano Park, recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for several projects to expand and renovate the casino, which is being rebranded as Harrah’s Pompano Beach.

The enhancements to the casino are the first phase in a multi-phase development of the 223-acre Isle Casino property, located on the southeast corner of Powerline Road and SW Third Street (Racetrack Road).

The Cordish Companies, in partnership with Caesars Entertainment (formerly Eldorado Resorts), is redeveloping the area surrounding the casino facility into Live! Resorts Pompano – a largescale mixed-use project that includes entertainment, retail, dining, hotel, residential, office and logistics elements.

The Cordish Companies has already constructed 12 Live! facilities in cities throughout the United States. Caesars Entertainment operates over 55 gaming and entertainment destinations, including Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

“Outside of the Las Vegas strip, this is the largest development that this company will do for quite some time,” said Caesars Entertainment CEO Tom Reeg at the Pompano groundbreaking.

As part of the rebranding to Harrah’s Pompano Beach, the casino’s interior will undergo extensive renovations, including new lights and flooring throughout, new restaurant space, remodeling of public restrooms, and a rebrand of the existing poker room as South Florida’s official World Series of Poker (WSOP) Poker Room.

A four-level parking garage with more than 1,500 parking spaces is currently being constructed on the east side of the existing casino building. A new section is being added to connect the parking garage to the existing casino, which will ease access to the casino and provide an expanded gaming area.

The parking garage will free up some of the surface parking areas on the Isle Casino property so they can be developed by The Cordish Companies.

Construction of a new smoking terrace addition to the casino and a new 14-seat bar will be starting soon. Currently, the casino has a small smoking patio accessible only through the Laurel Lounge, which is reserved for certain loyalty club members. The new smoking terrace will add 12,500 square feet of outdoor gaming that will be open to the general public without having to go through the Laurel Lounge.

EVERY ONE OF US HAS EXPERIENCED FEAR ON SOME LEVEL. PERHAPS IT WAS A SCARY ROLLERCOASTER RIDE, MAYBE YOU WERE CONFRONTED BY AN AGGRESSIVE DOG THAT WAS about to bite, or maybe you were about to go skydiving, and you were shaking in your boots when the plane door opened.

Those can be intimidating circumstances, and you are right to be fearful!

The other kind of fear is the kind that holds us back from achieving our big, hairy, audacious goals (BHAG goals).

One activity that intimidates many people is public speaking.

Many of us are afraid of messing up, being laughed at, or making a bad impression.

The reality is this type of fear needs to be viewed differently. Our definition of fear is False Evidence Appearing Real.

Many people dream of opening their own business, achieving

Those are all great objectives, and they are very attainable. The problem with ambitious goals is they usually make us nervous, uncomfortable, and can be a little scary!

We don’t want to fail in front of others. We don’t want to look silly or become nervous about taking on some financial risk. When we focus on what we are afraid of, that fear magnifies. We need to focus on the solutions. We need to concentrate on how we can make that dream a reality!

As Tony Robbins says, “When you ask great questions, you get great answers.” When someone is in a nervous or disempowered state, they ask the wrong questions, such as: Why does this happen to me?

Why is this so hard?

What if I fail?

What if I lose the money?

Those questions move your focus to the wrong target. Instead, ask empowering questions, such as: How can I make this work?

How can I do this faster and easier?

What will my life be like when I achieve my big goal or dream?

What is the solution?

When you focus on solutions and possibilities, your attitude and mindset increase, you feel excited, stronger and empowered! Now you can see your initial worries and concerns were truly false evidence appearing real.

FEAR OF FAILURE AMONG CHILDREN IN AMERICA TODAY IS AT EPIDEMIC PROPORTIONS. FEAR OF FAILURE CAUSES CHILDREN TO EXPERIENCE DEBILITATING ANXIETY BEFORE taking a test, competing in a sport, or performing in a recital. It causes them to give less than their best effort, not take risks, and, ultimately, never achieve complete success.

Cause of Fear of Failure Children get this destructive perspective on failure from American

people, poor athletes—are teased, bullied, and rejected. With this definition of failure, popular culture has created a culture of fear and avoidance of failure. It has conveyed to children that if they fail, they will be ostracized by their peers and branded as losers for life!

Parents Make Things Worse Many parents have fallen under American popular culture’s spell of failure. They’ve compounded the harm that failure can inflict on children by connecting their own love and approval with it. The message children get is, “I won’t love you if you get bad grades.”

They come to see failure as a threat to their personal and social standing.

The Stigma of Failure There is no greater stigma in American popular culture than being labeled a loser. The expression loser has become an oft-used and enduring symbol in popular culture. To be called a loser is, to paraphrase a well-known sports cliché, worse than death because you have to live with being a loser.

3. Many children don’t have the luxury of not taking part or coming up with excuses; for example, children can’t just not go to school. So another way that children can avoid failure is to get as far away from failure as possible by becoming successful. But children who are driven to avoid failure are stuck in limbo between failure and real success, what I call the “safety zone,” in which the threat of failure is removed, for example, they have a B+ average or finish in the top 10 in their sport, but they are unwilling to intensify their efforts to fully achieve success.

The Value of Failure Failure is an inevitable — and essential — part of life. Failure can bolster the motivation to overcome the obstacles that caused the failure.

It shows children what they did wrong so they can correct the problem in the future. Failure connects children’s actions with consequences which helps them gain ownership of their efforts. Failure teaches important life skills, such as commitment, patience, determination, decision making, and problem-solving. It helps children respond positively to the frustration and disappointment they will often experience as they pursue their goals.

Failure teaches children humility and appreciation for the opportunities that they’re given.

Of course, too much failure will discourage children. Success is also needed to bolster motivation, build confidence, reinforce effort, and increase enjoyment. As children pursue their life goals, they must experience a healthy balance of success and failure to gain the most from their efforts.

Defining Failure To protect children from popular culture’s destructive definitions of failure, give them positive definitions of failure. I define failure in ways that encourage children to value rather than fear it.

1. Failure is not living in accordance with their values. When children cheat, lie, or don’t take responsibility for themselves, they fail.

2. When children buy into popular culture’s definition of success, such as being overly concerned with popularity or appearance, they fail.

3. Failure involves children not giving their best effort, making poor decisions, and not doing what is in their best interest.

4. When children look for the easy way out, are influenced by peer pressure, and act in ways that can hurt them, they fail.

5. Failure also means treating others poorly and not giving back to their families, communities, and the world as a whole. When children are selfish, uncaring, and disrespectful of the world they live in, they fail.

Giving children a definition of failure that takes away the fear liberates them from that fear. It also frees them to strive for success without reservation, to explore, take risks, and vigorously pursue their dreams. Children will know in their hearts that some failure is okay and in no way a negative reflection on themselves as people. Finally, failure will ultimately enable them to achieve success, however they define it. Y

Avoiding Probate on Your Home

THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS TO AVOID PROBATE ON YOUR HOME WHEN YOU DIE. IF YOU ARE SINGLE, THERE WILL BE PROBATE WHEN YOU DIE UNLESS YOU CHOOSE ONE OF THE following options. If you are married and own your home together, your surviving spouse will not have probate; however, there will be probate when the second of you passes away, unless you complete one of the following options.

Let us assume that you jointly own your home with your spouse and have two children. Both of you desire to have your two children inherit your home equally when you both pass away.

The first option would be to add the names of your two children to the deed as joint tenants with right of survivorship. This is not a good idea. It would affect your ability to claim your full homestead exemption. In addition, you lose control of your property and can only sell it if your children both agree and sign all closing documents. If you wanted to take one of the children off the deed, you would be unable to do so. If one of your children files for bankruptcy, has an adverse judgment or files for divorce, your property could be subject to liens or other legal action. Therefore, I recommend against a deed with your children as joint tenants with right of survivorship.

The second option is a life estate deed. There are two types of life estate deeds: regular and enhanced (also referred to as Lady Bird).

The regular life estate deed requires that your children join in any sale or other changes on the deed; therefore, you have lost control and cannot take your child’s name off the deed if you choose to do so. The enhanced life estate deed gives you the sole right to sell the property during your lifetime or make any other changes to the deed without the permission of your child. The enhanced life estate deed has precise legal language to be effective; therefore, do not attempt to do this on your own.

Even with the enhanced life estate deed, there are risks, particularly if your child has a bankruptcy, outstanding judgment or undergoes divorce. However, the worst risk is if, God forbid, your child dies before you or with you in a common accident. Your child’s estate would then become the owner of the property once you died, which would result in probate being required. Thus, the primary purpose of the life estate deed is not accomplished.

The best way to avoid probate on your home is to do a revocable living trust. When you sign the revocable living trust agreement, you also sign a deed transferring the property to you as trustees of your trust. You are able to keep your homestead exemption, maintain complete control of the property during your lifetime and make amendments to your trust without changing the deed. Since your children’s names do not appear on the deed, there are no risks involved. The only disadvantage of the revocable living trust is that it will cost more money in attorney’s fees. When discussing the options with your attorney, you should discuss the difference in fees between the revocable living trust and the enhanced life estate deed. You can then determine whether it is worth saving the money and taking the risks involved in the enhanced life estate deed. Consider a Family Bank to Promote Entrepreneurship

BY GREGORY EDWARDS A FAMILY BANK IS A FORMAL LEGAL ENTITY A FAMILY SETS UP, WITH RULES THAT GOVERN HOW FAMILY MEMBERS CAN ACCESS FUNDS TO START OR SUPPORT BUSINESS VENTURES and how those family members are expected to pay back that money. Family banks provide structure, professionalism and accountability when furnishing money to family members to fund initiatives. As such, they can help instill financial intelligence, financial responsibility and financial values in family members — while also helping to avoid favoritism in families with multiple children. Certainly, family banks have one clear and overarching goal: creating new wealth.

Solutions for the not-so-super rich Keep in mind family banks are not the exclusive domain of the extremely wealthy. Families with considerably less wealth can also use a family bank as a lending and investment vehicle to support the commercial activities of their heirs.

Whereas the exceptionally wealthy move assets around to fund their family banks, those less wealthy are not always in such a financial position. Instead, they may need to build a pool of money that family members can use. For example, a family could use the tax-free buildup from certain types of life insurance to amass wealth that family members can then use to fund their own entrepreneurial ventures.

How to Spice Up the Olympics

WITH THE OLYMPICS IN CHINA HAVING BEEN SOMETHING OF A FIASCO, PERHAPS IT IS TIME TO REJUVENATE THE GAMES WITH SOME NEW SPORTS. HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS: Bungee Jumping: The person who comes closest to the ground without smashing his head wins the silver medal. The athlete whose head actually touches the ground wins the gold. If the bungee cord breaks during a dive, that participant is awarded a “do-over,” assuming he survives.

To protect the jumpers, the ground should be covered with egg cartons.

Bobbing for Apples: I don’t know if kids today still do this, but I was very good at it. I’m sure I could compete on the Olympic level thanks to my big mouth.

(This game should not be confused with the Marquis de Sade version: Bobbing for French Fries.)

Ukulele Playing: Participants would be judged on how well they play “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” made popular years ago by “Tiny Tim .”Extra points would be given to left-handed players.

Hair Cutting: One could compete in various categories, such as “The Fade,” “The Mullet,” “The Bob,” “The Pixie”

and the infamous “Mohawk .”In addition to medals, the winners would earn gratuities.

Speed Plumbing: The athletes would be timed to see how quickly they can replace a toilet flush valve and flapper.

Kite Flying: This would be offered in two formats — “fair weather” and “during a thunderstorm .”In the latter, a metal key would be attached to the end of the kite string. The gold medal would go to whoever attracts the biggest lightning bolt. In addition, the winner would receive the Ben Franklin Trophy and free treatment at the nearest trauma center burn unit.

Checkers: This would allow people of any age to compete. A 30-second “shot clock” would be employed to force quick action. For players over 80 the shot clock would be set for 30 minutes.

(I might need a bit longer than that.)

Cat Herding: This would be a team sport and a timed event. Participants would be required to coax 30 cats from one enclosure to another by getting down on all fours and bumping the felines with their noses.

Banned substances will include catnip and kitty treats.

Cornhole: For the uninitiated, this involves trying to toss a six-inch square bag of seed corn into holes on a game board. This was new to me, but it is played internationally and is governed by the American Cornhole Association, complete with official rules.

There are numerous other potential sports, such as knife throwing, juggling and adagio dancing. Y

In a 10-inch cast-iron pan over medium-low heat, saute the onions in the olive oil until they are soft and just starting to turn brown — about 7 to 10 minutes. With a wooden spoon, form 4 wells for the eggs. Crack the eggs gently into the wells. Cover and cook for 2-5 minutes until the eggs are done to your liking. If people like different doneness levels (people can be so picky about eggs) you can add the eggs in intervals. In other words, for people who like the eggs more well done, add them first and then add the others for the folks who like runny yolks.

When the eggs are done, remove from heat and sprinkle with the scallions, jalapenos, and avocado. I like to sprinkle flaky sea salt on the eggs — but any salt will do the trick. Serve with good bread for mopping up those runny yolks.

BOLD REDS PICKING POINTERS: PART 2—WEIGHTIER REDS

AS THE TITLE SUGGESTS, THIS IS THE SECOND OF A MULTI-PART COLUMN WITH QUICK ADVICE FOR IDENTIFYING AND selecting red wines. It provided pointers when shopping for lighter dry red wines and included Pinot Noir and others like easy-drinking and food-friendly Dolcetta d’Alba, Agioritiko, Chinon and Cinsault. Let’s turn now to heavier, more full-bodied dry red wines. These include wines from many countries. I’ll cover selected wines from Europe here, and from the United States, Australia, and South America later in Part 3.

My purpose in writing these columns is to give readers a quick guide to basic characteristics of many of the dry red wines you might find in stores or restaurants.

The objective is to help remove some of the uncertainty or confusion nearly everyone who enjoys and shops for wine experiences at one time or another. We’ve all seen names or labels for wines we haven’t tried and wonder what they are and how they taste but are reluctant to try. 0There are countless different kinds of wine made in many styles from many varieties of grapes grown under endless combinations of soil, weather, and other conditions. No other beverage is affected by so many variables. This is part and parcel of the endless mystery, enjoyment, and surprises good wine can offer.

Brief Guide to Picking Fuller-Bodied Dry Red Wines The wines mentioned below are some of the medium to heavy-weight dry wines you might see on a good restaurant’s wine list or in a store with a wide international selection of wines ranging in price from $10 to $150 and more. (Bear in mind, that bar and restaurant wine bottle mark-ups are often two to three times what retail stores charge for the same or similar wines, and a glass of some wines, especially cheap ones, might cost almost as much as what you’d pay at a store for a whole bottle.) These tips are organized by country or region, just as they typically are in stores or on wine lists. So, imagine you’re in a typical wine shop where the aisles, shelves or racks are marked France, Spain, Italy, and so on, and perhaps more specifically, Bordeaux or Tuscany. Labels on European wine bottles typically identify wines each by the region or town they’re

from, such as Chianti or Saint-Julian, and sometimes by grape names, such as Barbera or Nebbiolo.

Heavier red wines tend to be more fullbodied, have more intense flavors, and have deeper, darker, inkier red, purple, or even blackish-blue colors. This is because heavier wines are usually made from grapes that grow best in the warmer or sunnier conditions that tend to yield grapes with more intense flavors and skins with pigments that yield deeper, darker hues.

(Dark grape skin pigments give red wines their distinctive colors. Just peel any grape and look at its pulp’s color.) The skins also impart tannin, a natural preservative that help give wines structure but also can impart a residual, slightly bitter or astringent taste you might experience when eating walnuts, drinking unsweetened iced tea, or chewing on grape skins.

Fuller bodied wines also tend to have higher alcohol content — in the range of 13-16% alcohol by volume (ABV). This

amount, marked on front or back wine labels along with a wine’s name and grape information, is an important clue to how a wine will taste and be perceived. Alcohol content, of course, is one reason people enjoy wine. Just as importantly, alcohol content contributes to our perception of how filling, light or heavy, and weak or strong a wine is. Wines with 15% ABV are not just more potent than wines with less alcohol; they generally feel heavier and more filling, and may taste hotter and more alcoholic as they get warmer.

However, none of this means that alcohol content correlates with flavor intensity.

Heavier wines are also more likely to be exposed to oak, ideally in oak barrels instead of wood chips or other substitutes in steel or concrete tanks. Aging in oak may take months or years, changing and adding flavors and aromas, such as softening fruitiness and adding vanilla, cocoa, spice, cedar, tobacco, or other characteristics.

Many wines are made in multiple styles depending on where, how, and when the grapes were grown and harvested, and how they were made into wine.

France The most famous French wine is Bordeaux, named for the region in western France on the Gironde River. Bordeaux wines tend to be medium to full-bodied with alcohol content in the 13-14.5%. Top wines are astonishingly good. The region is comprised of many appellations or wine districts on both sides of the river. The wines from the appellations on the west side of the Gironde, known as the Left Bank—most notably Medoc, Pauillac, St-Estephe, Margaux, St-Julian, and Passac-Léognan—are made principally with Cabernet Sauvignon often blended with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and other varietals. The best are refined with intense fruit, earthy flavors, and noticeable tannins. Wines from the east side of the river, or Left Bank, are mostly Merlotbased and usually blended with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and other varietals.

The best, usually from Pomerol and Saint Emillion, are medium to full bodied with delicious blackberry or dark cherry, plum, chocolate, and other flavors on a silky but modestly tannic frame. Bordeaux from the main appellations can be very pricey, but many good values are available from neighboring areas like Moulis, Listrac, Fronsac, Lussac, d’Aiguille, and Castillon as well as more broadly sourced Bordeaux Superior and Cru Bourgeois.

A number of heavier French wines are made in France’s south. The most sought after are the wines of the Southern and Northern Rhone regions. The Southern Rhone features Chatneauneuf-de-Pape and Gigondas. These are both potent, full-flavored, and full-bodied blends typically made from combinations of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre and smaller amounts of multiple other grapes. They have red and dark fruit, earthy, and herbal flavors — perfect for special meals of richly flavored meat and 66 pointpubs.com •

poultry dishes. Northern Rhone wines are made exclusively from Syrah the makes deep inky purple wine. The good ones are velvety smooth with delicious dark berry fruit, peppery spices, and maybe some olive and other flavors. Top wines are expensive, but those from CrozesHermitage and Saint-Joseph are both tasty and less expensive, if not quite as rich as the others.

Wonderful, richly flavored Syrah wines are also made in the Languedoc region of southern France. But for something special, look for Bandol. Bandol is a robust, full-bodied, and distinctively flavored wine made in Provence, mostly from Mourvèdre grapes (called Monastrell in Spain). Bandol is dark, jammy, and structured with dark fruit, pepper, chocolate, leather, tobacco, and other flavors and aromas. Some consider it wild. Decant or give it an hour or more to “breathe” before drinking. ABV is usually around 14%.

Spain Tamer, generally less expensive versions of Mourvèdre or Monastrell are made on Spain’s central Mediterranean coast in areas called Alicante, Jumilla, and Yucla. These tend to share Bandol’s rich, smooth texture but with toned down flavors. Closer to Barcelona, there is a mountainous area call Priorat that makes a unique wine by the same name chiefly from blends of Garnacha (Grenache), Mazuelo (Carignan), and Syrah that’s potent, lushly full-bodied, and full of interesting cherry, floral, spice, earthy, licorice and other flavors and scents.

Other heavier Spanish red wines you’re likely to see in stores come from three areas in Spain’s north: Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Toro. Their main grape is Tempranillo, and they share the same aging designations and requirements, which means you can buy recently released wines from these regions that have been aged for you. They’re often very good values, as well. Rioja is Spain’s flagship wine. It is generally mid-weight and mainly made from Tempranillo; it has modest alcohol content, mild tannins, and inviting cherry, raspberry, dried fruit, herbal, tobacco, oak, and other characteristics.

Ribera del Duero wines are made from a Tempranillo clone called Tinto Fino that grows well in that region’s bitterly cold winters and exceedingly hot summers.

Ribera nonetheless produces many beautifully elegant wines that match or exceed Rioja’s best wines. Toro’s version of Tempranillo can be like an altogether different wine: powerful, rich, muscular, and more alcoholic.

The nature and intensity of Rioja, Ribera, and Toro flavors depend on how long each wine has been aged. Those marked Crianza must spend two years aging in oak and bottles and are fresh and easy-going. Riserva must age at least three years in oak and bottles and leans toward fuller, rounder, and more interesting flavors. Gran Riserva must age five years or more, often resulting in more deeply nuanced flavors and smells.

Crianza and Riserva are good to with and compare.

S.E. CUSTOM Italy The Piedmont region in northwestern Italy produces two of the world’s greatest wines, Barolo and Barbaresco.

Both are made from Nebbiolo grapes. When poured, they look as though they might be light bodied like Pinot Noir.

These are intense, very full-flavored wines that have beautiful layers of red berry fruit and other flavors when properly aged. Unfortunately, they can be very tannic and off-putting if consumed within less than five or six years after the vintage date. Since they’re expensive, it is a waste to buy and drink them too young. However, there are wines made in Langhe and other nearby districts from Nebbiolo and Barbera that are less expensive and delicious when young. They’re mid-weight, easy-drinking wines that are neither as intense nor as tannic as Barolo but full of cherry, strawberry, and raspberry flavors. Look for bottles made by the makers of Barolo and Barbaresco.

Tuscany is home to wines made mainly from Sangiovese grapes. The most popular is Chianti, a mid-weight with a modest 13.5-14.5% ABV that must contain at least 70% Sangiovese grapes. The result is a more acidic wine than most red wines, lightly tannic, and shows off sweet cherry, herbal, coffee, and olive flavors. It’s a perfect match for all kinds of Italian foods and is reasonably priced. I suggest buying Chianti Classico or Chianti Classico Riserva, because of their better quality and longer aging. Single vineyard and Gran Selezione versions are pricier. The Chianti region is near Florence, but to the south and the west are other outstanding wines. Brunello di Montalcino and its lighter and less expensive cousin, Rosso di Montalcino, are pure Sangiovese. Good Brunellos are regal, muscular, and full of intense flavors. Made nearby is Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, another similar mid-weight Sangiovese wine that’s worth trying.

In Tuscany’s western district of Maremma is home to beautiful wines known as “Super Tuscans.” These are blends made chiefly with Sangiovese, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Some are among Italy’s most famous and expensive wines, but many are pretty affordable. They range significantly from mid to full-bodied and from modest to high ABV. Those blended with Merlot or Syrah are more likely to combine intense fruit flavors and silky texture.

Finally, here are three additional bold, full-bodied Italian wines from warm, sunny places to know about: Taurasi, a black ink-colored wine made in Campania from Aglianico grapes that has dark fruit, chocolate, and some tannic bitterness; Nero d’Avola, another blackish, juicy and filling wine from Sicily; and Cannonau, a bold, red fruit, spicy and herbal flavored wine from Sardinia that’s fun and food-friendly. All have ABV between 13.5-14.5%.

Patty Petrone There are many people in 2022 that grew up in Lighthouse Point, but only a small number from the “old days” when the city had more empty lots than actual houses.

Patty Petrone is one of those people. Pardon me, Commissioner Patty Petrone, the city’s newest elected official.

Best known for her role as the owner of the Red Fox Diner, the bulk of Patty’s life has involved boating, marinas and other things nautical.

Her family was in the boating industry for several years near

the start of the Chesapeake Bay, serving that region’s summer boating community. During the winter of 1968, at age 8, Patty’s father put his family in a boat and went to Florida.

“We were living aboard the boat down at the Sands, me and my younger sister and my parents. And my father sold the boat. So oh, dear — we need to move. My father was a fabulous salesman. And so we had to find a place to live right away.”

So the family bought a place in Lighthouse Point, and Patty

continued her childhood, and her love of boating flourished.

She certainly enjoyed a childhood of affluence, usually having the best boat among her friends who spent plenty of time after school and weekends on the water. “We went to the beach or waterskiing. Fishing, no, I was never into that.” She seems to have been “always the one driving the boat,” but thoroughly enjoying those years.

Her family quickly established their business in Fort Lauderdale on the Middle River with Jackson

Marine Sales, selling Chris Craft boats, Trojan yachts and others.

During the next 20 years, Patty immersed herself at the highest levels of the local marine industry.

She served the family business and served on the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) board and other related activities.

Just one example of her service involved the recruitment and hiring of the almost-legendary executive of the MIASF, Frank Herhold. His tenure and impact on the local industry were indeed remarkable, and according to Patty, “I was very proud of this.

It is one of the best things I ever did in my career. I remember going through stacks of resumes, and Frank just stood out. Above and beyond anybody else. We did interviews. It was, you know, big, big job.”

“The MIASF owns the Fort Lauderdale boat show and I was on the boat show committee for many years. We were involved with Kay Pearson, and all that.

So I know a lot about boats and vendors and manufacturers and all that sort of thing.” The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is massive and attracts elite boat makers and buyers from around the world.

The family sold that business about 20 years ago, leading

Patty and her husband Lou to venture into restaurants, namely buying the Red Fox Diner. Lou had some experience from a previous business, and Patty told me, “I’m thinking to myself, I’ll do the books, the payroll and the behind the scenes stuff — and I’ve absolutely fallen in love with the business and the customers and the families and our wonderful staff. So fast forward 16 years and here we are.”

“And we’re probably expanding into the old hungry Howie’s. We’re negotiating with a landlord right now. Architects are working on plans. We need a little additional space. We really need cooking space.”

Patty, with Lou, has spent many years leading the Pompano Beach/Lighthouse Point Nautical Flea Market held each January.

This event started in Lighthouse Point as a way for boaters and anglers to sell of excess gear but

has grown into a multi-day event with many prominent vendors of new boats and other equipment.

Proceeds from the event are split between the two cities to support marine-related projects.

No article about Patty would be complete without mentioning her extensive involvement with the Soroptimist Club. Her tireless efforts and dedicated leadership are admirable. I have seen her discuss how the money raised by the club directly affects the lives of disadvantaged women in our local area.

Patty knows some of these women personally and truly understands the work of the club is essential to the lives of many families facing hardships.

Mike, as a member of The Rotary Club, volunteering during the holidays to raise funds for The Salvation Army.

Michael Orange McLain Michael Orange McLain has served the community in an official capacity for over 20 years. He has been president of the local Rotary club, The Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce (concurrently), and president of the Lighthouse Point Chamber of Commerce, which later merged with the Pompano Beach Chamber.

We’ll get to his middle name, Orange, a bit later.

And during all this service to the local community, he ran his financial service business and continued his fascination with the American Civil War (both sides). And while all of

this was going on, he and his wife Patti raised a family.

Mike is still involved with the city, Rotary, financial services and has recently resurrected the Taste of Lighthouse Point, a popular fund-raising event for many years. This year’s affair will take place on April 2.

Mike has served as the Lighthouse Point Community Appearance Board chair since April of 2007. He served on that board for several years, “and before that, I was on the beautification committee with Hank Sarkis and Mike Cohen, the three of us basically — I think that would have been around

2000, something like that, 2001 maybe,” according to Mike.

“You see, the beautification committee was a limited-term thing. Sample road improvement projects, the roundabout down on 27th, several other things north of us, we put all of that together.

Those projects were pretty neat things to do,” he added.

Mike’s great grandfather was a Cherokee from Oklahoma and an M.D. He went on to say, “Yeah, all my ancestors are Cherokees. I’m part of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, and he’s the guy we all trace back to. His name was Blue Star.”

Mike is also an American

Civil War enthusiast. “I’m a real civil war fan, and it’s not just Confederate stuff, but these two guys, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and John Mosby.

Chamberlain was the guy at Gettysburg that may have saved the Union.” Mike is serious about the history of this conflict and these particular men.

Back in 1982-83, Mike served as president of the Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce at the Pompano Beach Rotary Club, at the same time. We can discuss Mike’s sanity issues at another time, but his devotion to community service was quite evident then and remains to this day.

“But later, about 20 years ago, Lighthouse Point people had the feeling that they weren’t being represented as

much as they would like by the Pompano Chamber, and I agree, they weren’t. So Jane McLaughlin, when she was on the commission, started a group of business people. It wasn’t called the chamber, but that was the genesis of that chamber. That was about the time I started the Taste of Lighthouse Point event.”

The Taste of Lighthouse Point event has been produced by the

Lighthouse Point Chamber and now the Rotary Club for 16 years. Y (Editor’s Note: The Pompano Beach Chamber absorbed the Lighthouse Point Chamber about four years ago and now services both cities and Margate).

a great event, our long history of being a fun event for our visitors, vendors, volunteers, and the community at large.”

Of course, there will still be seafood of every type and style. There will be great music. There will be all the vendors that are always so popular. Yet admission, parking, and vendor fees will remain as close to 2019 as possible without sacrificing crucial elements.

THEMAIN EVENT Most of the vendor booths will be in between the stages, putting them in the heart of the festival. Boat and auto displays will again highlight the festival entrance.

“We are going to have really great music, evenly spread throughout the day, instead of one or two nighttime headliners,” said Good. “The food court will be on the patio of the amphitheater with a rooftop dining area overlooking the entire event.

The layout will be simpler and more cohesive than in previous years.

The event’s producers are genuinely excited about the changes and the great venue at Community Park.

Local Lighthouse Point fly-fisherman Derek Ulbrich finds the ultimate jungle experience and fly-fishing paradise in a deeply remote Bolivian national park amongst indigenous people of the Tsimane Tribe.

Your native guides, using their wooden push poles, steady the dug-out canoe next to the stream’s bank. You jump out onto a long, moss-covered boulder, fly rod in hand, and scramble upstream. Your guide is ahead of you, elevated on another mossy rock. He is squatting, with frozen intensity, as he points upstream with his left hand and emphatically waves you forward with his right. He points to a good spot for you to stand below and makes the universal symbol for big fish with hands wide apart. Something great lurks ahead. Heart rate: 90.

You don’t pay attention to the huge yellow and blue macaws squawking as they pass above, crossing the narrow canyon that towers over you. You hear only the rushing stream, and the sound of your reel as you strip out 60 feet of line and prepare your cast. Your guide, Santiago, and you quickly discuss the fish’s location. It is sitting in the fast current, against the rock wall on the right where the stream is only 8 feet wide and 2 feet deep. You check your back cast situation; jungle plants, boulders and logs behind you wait

eagerly to foil your attempt. You have only a very narrow corridor to work with. The cast is straight upstream, 20 meters into fast current; level of difficulty in the 9’s. Heart rate: increasing.

It’s showtime. With a few false casts you feed out the correct amount of line and land the fly exactly where you wanted, 5 feet in front of the fish.

“Strip, strip, strip!” your guide shouts as you furiously try to keep up with the current rushing towards you.

The fish turns and attacks the fly but the current is too fast, you feel it, you see it, but you can’t get tight to strip set the hook. You lift the rod in a last ditch effort to connect but the fly comes free and sails back past you at 100 mph. Brief and reflexive profanity ensues. You keep the false cast going though, ready for another shot. You still haven’t snagged a bush. Heart rate: 105 While keeping your false casts going your guide points again. He sees another fish, 20 feet farther up between a rock and a stick. Impossible you think. That is too far, no room left behind you, target too small, going to snag a tree any second... You muster your best double haul and release a Hail Mary upstream. The 9-weight line rolls out like it has a mind of its own, landing the huge fly exactly where you hoped. You can’t believe it. Perfection. It is happening! Heart rate: 120.

“Strip, strip, strip!!!” he yells as you see the fish turn, charge the fly, and eat. You concentrate on your hands to get tight, setting the hook in that bony mouth full of razor sharp teeth. Heart: not beating....

downstream. The native guides quickly move the cuamba out of the way as the fish takes to the air with a dramatic cart-wheeling leap and then continues downstream into the backing. The fish is big. It is your biggest yet anyway. Maybe 9 or 10 kilos. Heart rate: resumes somewhere in the 130s.

After a couple minutes and six more jumps, you coax your trophy to shore and your guide grabs it. You stand there and stare for a moment in a sort of stunned amazement. You carefully pick up the fish for some quick pictures before releasing this beautiful creature back to where it belongs. Your guide is ecstatic. You look at your native guides who are normally quite stoic and reserved.

They are both smiling. You did good. Looking up you take in the prehistoric scenery wrapped around you; this place is straight out of the pages of National Geographic. You cheer, “HAMSI!!!” — the Tsimane word for beautiful. It is day three and you still can’t believe you are here. Time to go find another fish.

The location is Sécure River Lodge at Asunta village (S 15.49.821, W 066.26.581) in the Western edge of Bolivia’s TIPNIS National Park and Indigenous Territory (TIPNIS stands for Territorio Indígena Parque Nacional Isiboro Sécure). It is a two-hour flight by Cessna from Santa Cruz to a tiny airstrip carved into the jungle. The majority of this

flight is over roadless, virgin jungle canopy interrupted only by scores of winding rivers and streams that have zero fishing pressure. The lodge is located where the crystal clear sub-Andean headwater streams empty into the rainforest and feed the rest of the Amazon basin. The fish are the Golden Dorado (Cazare) — arguably the most aggressive, acrobatic and exciting fresh water fly fishing target species in the world.

The outfitter is Untamed Angling, the brainchild of founder Marcelo Perez. The model he created is unique.

It is a cooperation between various groups of indigenous peoples and Untamed Angling to provide an eco-conscious and sustainable source of income for the indigenous people, while providing the stuff of fantasy for anglers seeking big fish and adventure in hyper-remote locations.

This is a barbless, fly fishing only, catch and release fishery.

These fish are treated with great respect. The dorados here are basically sacred to the locals who see them as partners in their hunt for the sabalo, a carp-like species that the dorados feast on during their annual upstream spawning migration. Caught by bow and arrow, Sabalo are a staple for the indigenous people and occupy the same ecological niche as mullet in Florida.

The fish I describe above, while not my biggest, was the

most memorable to me. It was the location, the hunt, the difficulty in presenting the fly, the smiles on my guides’ faces…. everything. That fish was caught in Ashahana Creek, a narrow and shallow, crystal clear tributary to the much larger Sécure river. It is like a jungle trout stream except these “trout” can push 40 lbs., are golden with giant heads, and can bite your finger off. There are two other less common species to target here. The Yatorana (Pirapatinga) vaguely resemble shad, also have vicious dentures, and fight and jump their hearts out. They are the least common

The park is a window into what things looked like a million years ago, still pristine and untouched. of the three and grow to over 10 lbs. Pound-for-pound, Yatorana are the strongest. They will take streamers and large dry flies. Then there is the Pacu (Tambaqui). Many of you are familiar with these as they can be found in the canals of South Florida as expats of the aquarium trade.

They are essentially a super-sized vegetarian piranha and are usually caught presenting fruit and nut imitations in the deep slow moving pools. Pacu even jump from time to APRIL 2022 • pointpubs.com

time and are referred to here as jungle permit. To catch all three in one day is a called a Tsimane Grand Slam, a club I was lucky enough to join.

The 70 local natives who live in the village of Asunta belong to the Tsimane tribe (Chi-mon-nay). This is their forest and they are in tune with every aspect of the river, jungle and wildlife. What they say goes. The children here start to learn the use of a bow and arrow at 2 years of age. They still live mostly as they always have getting all they need from the forest and the river. They also raise small crops of papaya, corn, pineapple and bananas.

Tribe members older than 30 remember a time before any regular contact with the outside world. Interacting with and learning from the natives is a special part of the entire visit.

It was interesting to learn about their culture.

For example, they don’t fight with each other and if a man were to strike his wife he would be thrown out of the village. Men are allowed two wives. They elect the leader of the village each year. They have many legends but no concept of God. They have no words in their language to express “thank you.”

The thing they fear most are stingrays and their absolute favorite thing to eat is monkey. They have very wide feet adapted over millennia for this area and walk barefoot all the time. They are very kind, noticeably shy, hard working and incredibly strong.

Another interesting note is that the Tsimane people were ranked as having the healthiest hearts of any group on the planet. Every member of the village is involved in some way with supporting the lodge. A trip to TIPNIS isn’t just fly fishing nirvana, it is really about just being there. This isn’t

a fishing trip, it is a complete jungle experience.

Untamed Angling runs six such lodges, three in Bolivia and three in Brazil providing opportunities to fish for the Amazon’s greatest game fishes: Dorado, Peacock Bass, Arapaima, Wolf fish, Payara, Pacu and several other species. In each case, you are a guest fishing indigenous land and guided by local Indians along with an expert fishing guide/interpreter. You travel the river by locally constructed, motorized dugouts called cuambas. At this location, nearly every time I stepped out of the cuamba, I was greeted with animal tracks in the sand along the shore— lots of them. The tracks of Jaguar, Puma, Ocelot,

Tapir, Peccary, Hochi, Kinkajou, Caiman and tiny forest deer called Chinyu are everywhere. In the air and trees are a bewildering variety of birds including all sorts of parrots and toucans.

At night many beautiful and bizarre insects visit the outer walls of your tent for your inspection by flashlight.

TIPNIS covers 5,000 square miles and is among the most biologically diverse places on the planet. According to Wiki, there are 218 mammal, 992 bird, 157 amphibian and 131 reptile species known in TIPNIS. There are likely thousands of unnamed insect and plant species here. The park is a

window into what things looked like a million years ago, still pristine and untouched.

After a day of fishing you return to the comforts of the lodge which was expertly built by the villagers using sustainable materials from the local forest.

Despite being so remote, this is five-star jungle living.

The camp chef is an expert gourmet. It was shocking to be eating such lavish meals considering where we actually were. Queen beds in large private tents, ceiling fans and lighting, private baths with hot showers, satellite internet Wi-Fi, ice cold beer and soda round out the comforts. The small group of about four to eight lucky anglers who visit here each week have want for nothing. The camp generator shuts off around 10:30 and it is time to get some rest for the next day’s fishing excursion. A day of fishing here can be quite strenuous, but if your adrenaline won’t stop dumping and you find you can’t sleep, solar powered batteries provide light in the pitch black darkness of the jungle. The jungle wakes up when the sun goes down. Sitting alone on my porch late at night, in the pitch black, looking at the stars, and listening to the sounds of the jungle, was simply awesome. From haunting chirps and calls, to violent crashing in the brush, each new sound seems more mysterious than the last.

A trip to Asunta Lodge may not be for everyone. I would not recommend a person going there unless/ until they are pretty good with a fly rod, so practice a lot before you go. I also wouldn’t suggest anyone with a heart issue or who is in poor physical shape go.

Standing and walking in wet boots in the sun for eight to nine hours a day, for six days straight, while casting large flies on 9 and 10 weight lines is physically quite demanding. Ninety percent of the fishing is wading or walking the banks of the river. They don’t let you just tromp through the jungle here either. There are things that can bite you that you would surely regret; this is not a place you want to get hurt. Visiting here is very safe but the nearest hospital is a long way away and requires a plane to come get you. I am pretty sure it is impossible to land on that airstrip in the dark.
