The Bridges of Lighthouse Point REPAIRS ARE SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER
The City Commission recently approved a bid from Bridge Masters Construction to carry out maintenance repairs that are needed for seven bridges in the city, based on the latest Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) bridge inspection reports. The repair work is expected to begin in early October 2021, and will be carried out on all seven bridges consecutively, one right after the other, according to the city’s Public Works Department. The bridges that require repairs are at the following locations: over the Pelican Waterway on NE 28th Street, over the Tern Waterway on NE 29th Street, over the Heron Waterway on NE 31st Court, over the Alamanda Waterway on NE 24th Avenue, over Cap Knight Bayou (Sample Road), over the Coral Key Waterway on NE 48th Street, and over the Egret Waterway on NE 49th Street. On average, repairs are expected to take about a week at each bridge – some slightly more, others slightly less. The whole project is expected to take about eight weeks to complete, depending on the weather, which will still be in hurricane season. All bridges will remain open to traffic at all times during the repairs. There may be temporary lane closures to deliver materials

or equipment, but the traffic will be managed during these brief time periods. The estimated cost of the project is $310,130, which will come from the city’s Infrastructure Fund. The work consists primarily of repairing cracks and concrete that has become pitted, flaked or broken up. The repairs are being done not only to maintain the bridges properly, but also to ensure the City’s eligibility for emergency monies to repair damage due to incidents such as storms.
ABOVE The bridge over Caps Knight Bayou on Sample Road
The approaches to six of the city’s 10 bridges have dips in them, and need asphalt patches to smooth the dips out. Those bridges are at: 28th Street, 29th Street, 31st Court, Sample Road, 24th Avenue and 48th Street. The asphalt patches are not included in the scope of work to be performed by Bridge Masters Construction because the contractor does not do paving. The City will be obtaining bids from other contractors for the asphalt patches. Y

A Dual-Brand Hotel Is Planned Along Federal Highway in Lighthouse Point A dual-brand hotel is being planned for a vacant site at 4060 N. Federal Highway in Lighthouse Point. The site is directly south of the Vintage At Lighthouse Point townhome community. The 4-story hotel – which pairs La Quinta by Wyndham and Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham under the same roof – is slated to have 93 rooms and 103 parking spaces, according to the site plan. The developer behind the hotel project is MATT Development, a family business based on Long Island. The project is currently working its way through the City’s approval process. According to Thomas DeSousa, general partner of MATT Development, the hotel would have 55-60 LaQuinta rooms and 30-35 Hawthorn efficiency suites. There would be a shared lobby on the ground floor. The site of the proposed hotel is a just over 1.5 acres, with an approximately 150-foot frontage on Federal Highway. The building would run lengthwise east to west The hotel building would be situated at the northwest corner of the property, and a two-level open-air parking garage would be at the southeast corner. DeSousa said a vertical parking structure was incorporated to meet parking requirements because the site

was too narrow to have all on-grade parking. He added that underground parking wasn’t an option due to the water table, and a podium parking garage at the base of the building wasn’t possible due to height restrictions. Amenities include a fitness center inside the hotel, and an outdoor swimming pool located between the hotel building and the parking garage. The hotel plans include an area that serves complimentary breakfast for hotel guests, but no restaurant. MATT Development purchased the property in January 2020 for $2.2 million. As per the plans, a new 8-foot perimeter wall would be built, which is required between commercial and residential properties. The site of the proposed hotel has stood vacant for many years. Most

recently, it was occupied by Gaucho Rodizio, a Brazilian steakhouse, and prior to that, Chateau De Ville, a catering and event space. After building the La Quinta and Hawthorn Suites hotel, MATT Development would own and operate it, said DeSousa. MATT Development built and owns a 4-story building in Rego Park, New York, that consists of a Wyndham Garden Hotel, a Starbucks, fitness center, BLVD Bistro & Bar, retail space and a parking garage. DeSousa, who owns a condominium in Deerfield Beach and lives there in the winter, said his family was looking for property to develop in the area and purchased the one in Lighthouse Point because “we thought it was a perfect spot for a hotel, and it is zoned properly for a hotel.” “Between running it in a wellorganized manner and its location, we expect that the hotel will do very well in Lighthouse Point and will be an asset to the community,” said DeSousa. DeSousa noted that his son Michael DeSousa, managing partner of MATT Development, was instrumental in getting the La Quinta and Hawthorn Suites project started and to the point where it is right now. DeSousa said he and his family would eventually like to relocate to South Florida. Y

Lighthouse Point Resident Donates $20,000 for DeGroff Park Improvements Lighthouse Point resident Roy Rogers has lived directly across the street from DeGroff Park for 43 years, and during that time, has been intricately involved in its evolution. Last month, Rogers and his family gifted the City with $20,000 to carry out improvements to the park in memory of his wife, Susan "Mandy" Rogers, who died in December 2019. The Lighthouse Point City Commission accepted the financial gift at its Jun. 8 meeting. Rogers said the reception he got at the meeting "was profoundly moving." The 4.5-acre DeGroff Park lies along the Intracoastal Waterway at the end of NE 52nd Street. According to the resolution passed by the City Commission, improvements to the park will include a paver seating area, and repairs and improvements to the existing pavilion area. At the City Commission meeting, Rogers gave each commissioner a container with a soon-to-emerge butterfly donated by Butterfly World. Rogers has been a longtime enthusiast of butterflies. "They grace the world; they're a sign of hope," said Rogers. In an area of right-of-way across the street from his house and adjacent to DeGroff Park, Rogers created a butterfly garden that includes strawberries, herbs and sweet almond shrubs. Inside the park, just north of the butterfly garden in the right-of-way,

is a much larger butterfly garden, created as an Eagle Scout project of Scout Troop 323. Rogers has initiated a number of improvements to DeGroff Park over the years, collaborating with the City and members of the community. One of the first things he did was install a large sandbox, and the City in turn put in a tot lot. The idea was to add amenities that attracted families and set a new tone for the park, said Rogers. Similarly, when Rogers offered to put in trees in return for a park fence, pavers and a bench for the butterfly garden, the City reciprocated. The park property was originally owned by the Florida Inland Navigation District, serving as a place to put dredged material

from the Intracoastal Waterway. In November 2003, Broward County purchased the land and gave it to the City of Lighthouse Point for use as a "passive park" in exchange for the city clearing the space of invasive, non-native species (in particular, Australian pines) and landscaping the area. Removal of the non-native species left the property "bald." Rogers led the effort to repopulate it with native species by raising money within a five block area. Rogers said that, more often than not, he initiated the ideas "and then the neighbors came in and said, yeah, that makes sense, and had no trouble in raising the sum." "That's the way community partnership should be," he said. Rogers noted that Butterfly >>>

"Oaks live more than 100 years," said Rogers. "They're enduring." Rogers attributes his love for nature to his 12-year career in the Navy, where he worked his way up to lieutenant. During the Cold War era, he served on a series of different ships and then on submarines. In the Arctic Ocean, he served on one of the first nuclear submarines with thermal nuclear missiles. The submarine would be out on patrol for two-and-a-half months at a time. On the rare occasions when Rogers could raise the periscope and look out, he felt a heightened sense of joy to finally see a bird and the sun, and see real color again. After leaving the Navy, Rogers 32 pointpubs.com •

oversaw the designing and building of golf courses all over the world for renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones. Then he worked as a developer, and along the way, joined a number of environmental organizations. "The environmental movement became a very big part of my life," said Rogers. Rogers worked for Arvida for 16 years as part of the team that created the City of Weston. From the very beginning, his love for nature and the environment influenced his approach to development, said Rogers. "That's why Arvida hired me," he said. "They knew what they were getting. I think you can develop in a benign way." Rogers and his wife Mandy enjoyed spending time at DeGroff Park with their four children and

15 grandchildren. It was a favorite place to celebrate birthdays and have family Easter egg hunts. A small brass plate with an inscription honoring Mandy will be added to an existing bench that sits atop the highest mound in the park, overlooking the Intracoastal. "If you didn't know her, you missed out," said Rogers of his wife. "She was kind and joyful and generous." For 25 years, she was a beloved Sunday school teacher at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Lighthouse Point. She was also involved in other community volunteer work. "We missed our 60th wedding anniversary by one month," said Rogers. DeGroff Park is "a place to come to refresh your soul," said Rogers. "And when you see a butterfly, say 'hi' to Mandy."Y

Bye Bye Bobby Rubino’s THE LONG TIME POMPANO BEACH BARBECUE RESTAURANT TO BE REPLACED BY RAISING CANE’S CHICKEN FINGERS Plans are underway to replace the Bobby Rubino's in Pompano Beach – known as "the place for ribs" — with Raising Cane's, a restaurant specializing in chicken fingers. The Bobby Rubino's at 2501 N. Federal Highway in Pompano is the last remaining franchise in the restaurant chain founded by Robert "Bobby" Rubino. The original location opened in Fort Lauderdale in 1978, and the Pompano Beach location opened soon after. The Raising Cane's fast-food restaurant chain, founded in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1996, has nearly 700 locations across the country, and about two dozen locations in the Middle East. According to a company spokesperson, there are currently no Raising Cane's in Florida. A Raising Cane's restaurant planned for the Miami Beach area is scheduled to open sometime next

year. The Raising Cane's in Pompano would be the chain's first location to open in Broward County. The approximately 10,000-squarefoot Bobby Rubino's would be demolished to make way for a 3,267-square-foot Raising Cane's restaurant. Raising Cane's plans to have 52 indoor seats and 52 seats on an outdoor patio along the east side of the building, facing Federal Highway. The proposed restaurant would have double drive-thru lanes, plus a third drive-thru lane dedicated to customers picking up online orders. According to the site plan, the payment and pick-up windows will be on the west side of the building. An application for a proposed right-in turn lane on Federal Highway has been submitted to the Florida Department of

Transportation (FDOT) to facilitate vehicular access to the restaurant. Broward-based Rozap, Inc. has owned the 2-acre Bobby Rubino's site since 1979. Over the years, the restaurant has retained its "old school" ambiance. As per the plans, all overhead utility lines will be relocated underground. An existing telecommunication tower and an existing billboard on the property are to remain. To earn the required sustainable development points for the project, a rain garden located at the center of the site is being proposed, instead of overhangs on all windows on the building's south façade. The project plans for Raising Cane's in Pompano are expected to be reviewed by the Pompano Beach Architectural Appearance Committee in August or September. Because the project involves a minor site plan, not a major site plan, it does not need to go to the Pompano Beach Planning and Zoning Board for approval. Y

Former Old Town Laundromat to Become Restaurant with Rooftop Seating The Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) has plans to transform a former laundromat in Old Town into a restaurant space with an indoor/ outdoor bar and a rooftop seating area. The space has been dubbed the “Wash House.” The CRA Board, at its meeting on June 15, authorized the expenditure of $350,000 for exterior and interior improvements to the property, located at 11 NE First St. The CRA purchased the structure in September 2019 for $1.2 million, after leasing it for five years. The property is an anchor site that is pivotal to the redevelopment of Old Town as an arts and entertainment district, according to CRA Project Manager Kimberly Vazquez. The CRA demolished the approximately 6,100-square-foot interior space down to dirt floors to make it easier to install new utilities and attract a restaurant. The property, which has been vacant for roughly seven years, was subleased by the CRA to a restaurant operator who subsequently requested the sublease be terminated. Since that time, the space has been shown to potential tenants who

have expressed interest but were dissuaded by the cost to renovate it, Vazquez told the CRA Board. In its current condition, with stucco and paint peeling off, the property is creating blight to the block, said Vazquez. With a vision in mind, the CRA hired DK Architects to provide conceptual designs and a budget for improvements to the building. The improvements will take place in two phases. The first phase will involve the exterior of the building, including opening the corner and west side of the building and creating the indoor/outdoor bar

rendering of the rooftop seating at the Wash House
area, new entrances on the west and south side, roll-down windows, exterior finishing work and pilings for an elevator. The second phase will include making the roof more structurally sound for the rooftop seating area, and adding infrastructure for stairwells. The second phase will be in the fiscal year 2022 budget, as it will require additional funding, said Vazquez. The goal of investing CRA funds in the property and providing the infrastructure is to attract a successful operator to the location, and to reduce some of the risk for the operator, said Vazquez. Mayor Rex Hardin noted that because other restaurants will be opening in Old Town — South Bar & Kitchen and Papamigos — “you don’t want to have an eyesore there.” The Northwest CRA Advisory Committee reviewed the proposed improvements and budget for the project at its Jun. 7 meeting, and unanimously approved moving forward. “It’s very exciting and something we need to do,” said CRA Director Nguyen Tran. “It’s creating a destination in Old Town.” Y

Focus on Potential BY CRAIG HALEY
I STARTED TEACHING MARTIAL ARTS WHEN I WAS 15 YEARS OLD. WHEN I STARTED THAT JOB, I KNEW THAT THIS IS WHAT I WANTED TO DO FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. I LOVED THE ENERGY, the people, and all the life lessons I learned. My instructor always told his staff, "Don't focus on where a student starts; focus on what they can become with time and training." What he was saying was don't focus on all the challenges a student has. There may be many. They may be overweight, uncoordinated, terribly shy or fearful. Where they start is not important. What is important is what students can become with coaching, encouragement and training. When we focus on their potential, it shifts our mindset to seek strengths and positive qualities to build upon.
I remember a student who enrolled in about 2006, just a few years after opening Elite Force. His father brought him in to become more confident, athletic and stronger. He was about 12 or 13 years old and his first-class was rough! He was like a fish out of water. He had a hard time because he lacked coordination and confidence. His dad asked me point blank, "Do you think he will be able to do this?"
44 pointpubs.com •
POINT! PUBLISHING
I gave him the same advice my instructor gave me. Never focus on where they start; focus on what they can become. I assured his dad that it wasn't going to happen in a day — that it would happen day by day with a lot of training, encouragement, reminders and repetition. The best thing about this kid was he wanted to improve. He showed up to the dojo three days per week with a positive attitude. Little by little, we saw his skill level improve, his confidence inched up month by month, and he was having fun. Five years later, this young man earned his black belt and his parents were ecstatic. Their once shy son became a black belt champion with confidence that he could achieve any goal he set for himself. Years later, he is now a police officer with the Broward County Sherriff's office, he is married, and has two kids. It's easy to focus on people's shortcomings and negative qualities. However, when you focus on positive attributes, progress happens. Sensei James Hons is a full-time instructor at Elite Force Martial Arts. He is currently in training for his fourth-degree black belt, and in 2015 he became the US Open Grand Champion. It was his first time competing. When he started training with us, he was a shy, unconfident kid who would not look me in the eyes. He starred at the floor when talking to me. His dad was a very militant, hard-nosed person, and he wanted his son to introduce himself to others with confidence. I shared this philosophy with his dad, and now more than 13 years later, he could not be prouder of his son. Are you a parent? Employer? Boss? Leader? Coach? If so, you have the unique privilege to coach and influence people under you. You may have the next superstar in your organization. That person may not know it yet, but if you look closely enough, you will be able to see tons of untapped potential waiting to come out. I have always loved the book, "The Little Engine That Could." That book is not just a kids' book. It is a philosophy for life! Teach people to think like that, encourage them, praise progress, gently correct errors, and you will be amazed by the results! Y Master Shihan Craig Haley is the Seventh Degree Black Belt instructor at Elite Force Martial Arts, eliteforcemartialarts.com.

Legal Matters
New Durable Power of Attorney Is Important to Protect You BY MARTIN ZEVIN, ATTORNEY A DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY IS AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT DOCUMENT THAT EVERY ADULT IN FLORIDA SHOULD HAVE. YOU APPOINT ONE OR MORE AGENTS TO ACT on your behalf for virtually all legal and financial matters. The durable power of attorney is most often utilized if you become incapacitated; however, I have many clients who choose to allow someone trustworthy to act on their behalf just to make life less complicated. The durable power of attorney can be used for such diverse jobs as paying bills, signing contracts, buying and selling real estate, making investments, collecting monies owed and most other matters of a legal or financial nature. It does not cover any medical decisions, for which Florida law requires a designation of health care surrogate. It also does not cover "pulling the plug," for which a written declaration, otherwise known as a living will, is required. If you have never done a durable power of attorney, it is imperative to contact a lawyer to prepare the document as soon as possible. However, if you have a durable power of attorney and it was done before October 1, 2011, it is strongly advisable to prepare a new one. You may also have a document done after October 1, 2011 but in the old format. This may also need to be redone. A comprehensive law regarding the durable power of attorney became effective on October 1, 2011. The law does provide that any durable power of attorney executed under Florida law before October 1, 2011 will remain valid. However, in the last few years, many financial institutions are refusing to honor the old durable power of attorneys, particularly those more than ten years old. There can also be substantial delays involved if your agent attempts to use an old durable power of attorney since the legal departments of the institutions are reviewing them before being allowed. The older your durable power of attorney is, the more likely it will undergo scrutiny and may be rejected. The new law requires that you specifically initial many different types of powers for your agent to be able to perform that duty. The banks, brokers, life insurance companies and other institutions are much more comfortable with this detailed durable power of attorney, since it is clear what you want your agent to do.
46 pointpubs.com •
POINT! PUBLISHING
Under the new law, you can choose to name two people to act as co-agents. You then designate whether you allow them to act independently (only one signature necessary) or require that they act together (two signatures necessary). Your designated agents will also need to sign an acceptance agreeing to act. The new format of the durable power of attorney is much more extensive and complicated (ours is 26 pages); therefore, if you did a power of attorney years ago, expect to pay more for the new one. The durable power of attorney remains valid until you die. It is against the law for your agent to use it (to withdraw funds, sell real estate, etc.) after your death. Roth IRA Conversion BY GREG EDWARDS FOR YEARS CONVENTIONAL WISDOM IN INCOME TAX PLANNING WAS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ALL OPPORTUNITIES TO REDUCE AND DEFER ONE'S TAXABLE INCOME DURING OUR accumulation years. Many of us used various pension, profitsharing plans and IRA's to lower our income tax exposure. That conventional wisdom may be changing. With the recent political changes in Washington and the large and growing federal budget deficit, many clients and friends are concerned that incometax rates will increase significantly in the future. Based upon research and the feedback from contacts in Washington D.C., I feel that this is a legitimate concern. One key way to protect against future tax increases is to consider a Roth conversion and lock in today's tax rates. When you convert a qualified retirement account (IRA, SEP, etc.), you pay income taxes at the current rates, and any withdrawals taken out in future retirement years are income-taxfree, which could be to your benefit if tax rates rise.
Who should consider converting to a Roth? 1. You believe your future tax bracket will be higher. In this case, you are paying taxes at today's rates and hedging against rising future tax rates. 2. You want to maximize your estate for your heirs. If you do not need income from your IRA during your lifetime, the conversion will not only allow your savings to grow tax-free, but will also potentially reduce your taxable estate by the amount of taxes paid saving on potential estate tax. In addition, your heirs will benefit from tax-free withdrawals over a specified time period. 3. You lack tax diversification of account types. If most of your assets are in tax-deferred accounts, converting some of those qualified assets may provide additional flexibility in tax planning during retirement. 4. You have lower than usual income this year. In this case, it may be worthwhile to take advantage of a year in which your income tax bracket is lower than usual. 48 pointpubs.com •
POINT! PUBLISHING
How do you convert to a Roth? 1. How to pay for the tax bill? Depending on your unique situation, we recommend paying with funds from outside of your IRA account; this method allows the IRA principal to accumulate gains tax-free.
2. When to execute? Some people choose to take a multi-year approach with conversions; however, with tax rate increases potentially on the horizon, many are considering a single year approach and converting before any potential future tax increases. While I have been hesitant to support Roth conversions in the past, I believe the current environment offers an ideal time to convert some or all of your IRA assets to a Roth IRA and lock-in what could be historically low income-tax rates for high earners. Athletes and Mental Health PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES ARE TALKING ABOUT THE ONCE HUSH-HUSH TOPIC, LEADING THE WAY TO A LARGER CONVERSATION
BY DR. JILL SELBACH
THE LAST YEAR HAS TAKEN A TOLL ON MOST PEOPLE'S MENTAL HEALTH IN SOME WAY OR ANOTHER. IT IS GOOD THAT THE AWARENESS OF MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES HAS INCREASED in this country. The topic of mental health seems a little less taboo to talk about in this day and age. That is progress, but there is still a long way to go. One topic that has stolen the spotlight of late is the stressors and mental health issues that our professional athletes experience. It seems more typical to read about musicians or actors who struggle with drug addiction, mental health issues and, unfortunately, suicide. Naomi Osaka recently withdrew from the French Open after a conflict with officials over participating in the press conferences before the event. She openly discussed her experience of "long

bouts of depression." We sit in awe of the physical abilities of these athletes, and sometimes people overlook the mental toughness that must also be there to compete at such high levels. Everyone copes with stress differently, and it affects people very differently. Physical health and safety have been an important topic with athletes regarding CTEs (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), sexual abuse and substance abuse related to them performing their "jobs." Many athletes seek out sports psychologists to aid in coping with the pressures of high-level performance. They have the physical and technical abilities but fall into a psychological space that negatively impacts their performance. Researchers have found an enzyme, catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT), that breaks down the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain. It is hypothesized that COMT plays a part in stress tolerance. The part of the brain responsible for cognitive ability, problem solving, judgment and planning is the prefrontal cortex. The brain needs a delicate balance of dopamine to function at an optimal level. If there is too little dopamine, these functions are not performed well. In times of stress, there is too much dopamine, and again, the brain does not perform these functions well. COMT is essential to help balance out dopamine. There are two COMT gene variants that either break down >>> ABOVE NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 6, 2018: Professional tennis player Naomi Osaka in action during her 2018 US Open semi-final match at Billie Jean King National Tennis Center — Photo by zhukovsky

Get Psyched <<< dopamine quickly or slowly. One-quarter of us are said to have the slow or fast variant. Whereas the other share of the population is not so clearly differentiated. There are benefits to both of these variants that can contribute to optimal performance in different situations. The slow variant keeps dopamine levels up when we are calm, ensuring sharpness in those areas discussed above. People with the fast variant have a clear edge when functioning under stressful conditions because they can break down the overflow of dopamine. When one is faced with a chronic state of stress that cannot be modulated efficiently, this can lead to other issues such as anxiety and depression. Looking at emotional issues more like physical issues would break down the stigma of mental health issues. This attitude could lead more people to seek treatment before these symptoms become a fullfledged clinical disorder. As a society we try to focus on preventative medicine for many things, but we don't speak about mental health from a preventative standpoint — this is where we go wrong. Professional athletes cope with a tremendous amount of stress that goes on behind the scenes. Here are a few examples of athletes who have come forward with their stories to help break down the stigma. DeMar DeRozan, a top 10 draft pick in the NBA in 2009 and currently plays for the San Antonio Spurs, revealed he struggled with anxiety and depression. He became an advocate for mental health, and as a result, in the 2019-2020 season, the NBA mandated that each team have at least one fulltime licensed mental health professional on staff. I think most of us remember Michael Phelps, the Olympic swimmer, and his admission to having depression and anxiety that led to substance abuse and two DUIs. He spoke openly about not reaching out for help until he "hit rock bottom." He contemplated suicide and sought help and is an advocate for asking for help early. Many other athletes have also spoken out about their personal experiences and become advocates of treatment. Olympic gymnasts Aly Raisman and Simone Biles; women's UFC champion Ronda Tousey; NBA player and member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team Kevin Love ; and Abby Wambach — the two-time Olympic Gold Medalist & FIFA World Cup Champion, to name a few. No one is exempt from having these experiences. The healthiest thing we can do is seek guidance to make changes in our lives when things are not going well. Intervene early and do not wait for emotional symptoms to get out of hand. Y is a licensed clinical psychologist. For more information visit drjillselbach.com or call 954-618-8412.

Also, try to reduce your debt load. It’s not always easy, but the lower your debt payments, the more money you’ll have available to invest. Here’s another resolution: Build an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a liquid account. Such a fund will help you avoid dipping into long-term investments for emergencies, like a new furnace or major car repair. Another key resolution: Make sure your protection needs are being met with the proper amounts of life and disability insurance. Finally, resolve not to overreact to market volatility. You’ll help yourself greatly by following an appropriate investment strategy in every market environment. Work to turn these resolutions into realities. Your efforts could pay off well beyond 2014.

Tidbits & Trivia
The Truth about Unidentified Flying Objects BY JAMES TERLIZZI THE RECENTLY RELEASED GOVERNMENT REPORT ABOUT UFOS WAS AS BLAND AS UNSALTED PABLUM. THROUGH MY UNIMPEACHABLE SOURCES, I NOW AM ABLE TO BRING YOU the truth about flying saucers and extraterrestrials. The government report mentioned 144 UFO sightings over the last two decades. They chose to explain only one claim: a Chinese flying wish lantern (basically a paper bag and a candle). What our leaders didn’t tell us: The “Tic Tac” looking thing you’ve seen in the videos is not a UFO. It’s a giant prototype being developed by Ferrero. The Italian candy company has a contract with Governor Gavin Newsom to drop several gigantic Tic Tacs in the ocean off the coast, giving the water a distinct peppermint flavor, hopefully, to solve California's biggest problem — the halitosis epidemic. Thirty-three of the incidents are test flights of spaceships by Amazon. Jeff Bezos will soon announce the availability of Prime delivery service anywhere in the solar system. The rest of the sightings are truly extraterrestrial. I have obtained this information from the one who knows — Ralph, my brother-in-law's second cousin. Ralph has been delivering pizza to Area 51 for years. As a result, he has the run of the place. Here is what else he has learned, first-hand: There are no such things as "little green men." They are not little. They are not green and they are not men. The extraterrestrials who have visited our leaders are all human-sized women from the planet Meow in the constellation Leo. They worship cats, something they picked up from the ancient Egyptians. They are capable of asexual reproduction, so there are no men on their planet. This explains why they have no wars and why they haven’t tried to kill us. The Meowans, as they call themselves, credit the TV show "Star Trek" for giving them the idea for "warp drive," which allows their flying saucers to warp space, bringing everything in the universe so close together they can travel to any point in 15 minutes (except on I-95 during rush hour). The person they most often request to meet is Capt. James T.

As a result, the feds have selected Pam Dawber from the show “Mork and Mindy” to be the point-woman in talks with the aliens. Many theories abound as to why the Meowans are visiting our planet. Some say they are keeping an eye on us so we don’t export our aggressive behavior to other planets. Others think they are here to mine our mineral wealth. They are partly right. The Meowans have a serious shortage. They are here to steal our kitty litter. Y

Lobsta Pasta BY MRS. KOSSENFLOFFER
I grew up in the Northeast where part of the joy of summer was seasonal produce. And while I am now a proud Floridian, summer will forever mean corn on the cob and juicy red tomatoes. Corn chowder is a perfect way to use summer corn — the problem is, who wants soup during a Florida summer? So I flipped the script and used a few corn chowder ingredients for this summertime pasta. The whole dish gets topped with lobster and prosciutto because it’s fun to be fancy. >>>

Add more olive oil to the pan if needed and add the leeks and saute until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes, corn, garlic, thyme, and a pinch each of salt, pepper and red pepper flakes. Cook until the tomatoes begin to break down and split open, about 4-5 minutes. Add 2-3 tablespoons of butter to the pan and cook until the butter starts to brown just a little. Add the wine and lemon juice and simmer for 2-3 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and add the lobster back in. While the sauce cooks, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the pasta according to package directions, until al dente. Reserve a cup of the pasta cooking water, then drain the pasta and add it back to the hot pasta pot with 1/4 cup of olive oil and the fresh herbs. Season with salt and pepper and toss to combine. Add a little of the reserved pasta water if it seems too dry. Divide the pasta among the bowls and top with the lobster, corn and tomato mixture. Top each plate with the reserved prosciutto. Y

Try the Wine
Aha, Rioja! Where Aging Matters BY DAVID EHRENFRIED THE FAMOUS 1960S-1970S FOLK-ROCK SINGERSONGWRITER JIM CROCE COMPOSED QUITE A GOOD LOVE SONG, “TIME IN A BOTTLE.” THAT SONG HAD nothing whatsoever to do with wine, although the title suggests it could. Many of the world’s wines need extended time in a bottle, oak barrel, or both to taste the way growers and makers imagined or intended. Wine, by its very nature, is a dynamic substance that’s constantly undergoing complex chemical changes, even when it’s closed tight to prevent contact with air. Properly stored and left to rest, premium dry red wines that might taste harsh or too fruity when young may soften over time and flavors may change and blend in delicious ways. It’s a lousy analogy, but

within a year or two of their vintage or harvest year and are ready to drink on release. Some, however, can be set aside to enjoy years later after their aromas, flavors, and texture mature. Unfortunately, when we get a special young wine, an expensive California cabernet sauvignon or French Bordeaux for example, our temptations and curiosity can get the better of us, and we open it right away — a good reason sometimes to buy two or more bottles so we can experience the wine again after its spent more time in a bottle. Fortunately, certain wines are routinely stored well past their vintages, relieving us of the urge to drink them before their time. Spain’s Rioja winemakers do just that, aging their better red wines in oak barrels and then in bottles for at least three to five years before releasing them for us to enjoy. It’s an important tradition, as proper aging gives Rioja wines the smooth and deliciously wonderful old-world character that makes them pleasant to drink and complement many foods and occasions. There are, of course, other fine red wines released well after their harvest dates. For instance, Italy’s rich, robust Brunello di Montalcino wines are released after five years, and Portugal’s Port producers age some wines for decades. Getting back to Rioja, if you visit a wine store with a good selection of Spanish wine, you’ll likely see Rioja wines with 2017 and earlier vintages. (Rioja, in case your Spanish is rusty, is pronounced ree-YO-hah, ideally with a rolled “r,” if your tongue can do that sort of thing.) Usually, these wines have not been sitting on the shelves for years for lack of buyers. Hopefully, they arrived with other wines that have been recently released by producers and their distributors. So, if you like red wine and see a bottle of Rioja reserva or gran reserva in a reliable wine shop from the outstanding 2010 or 2011 vintages, grab a bottle and try it. And don’t be surprised by the
price tag. These wines are often incredible values, frequently selling between $15 and $45 at retail. Some though, like CUNE’s Imperial or La Rioja Alta’s Gran Reserva wines, will sell for considerably more. For this article, we opened a 2010 CUNE Gran Reserva that I purchased for about $30 three years ago. It was truly among the best wines I’ve ever tasted. Rioja wines fit a general profile, although they vary in quality and taste based on their vintage, aging process, winemaker, and so forth. Anticipate a light to medium weight wine with bold dark red fruit and subtle to distinct oaky vanilla flavors, smooth texture, and a pleasant balance of acidity and noticeable tannins. They drink nicely on their own or with nuts, olives and flavorful cheese and cold cuts. They're especially lovely with grilled, roasted, or stewed meats, poultry and vegetables. For a real treat, try Rioja with mushrooms cooked any way you like them, provided they don’t lose the mushroom flavors or consistency that Rioja complements so well.
La Rioja Like many old-world wines, Rioja is a product of location and winemaking methods that have evolved over centuries. The La Rioja region lies in the northeast corner of Spain near the French border and less than 50 miles south of the Bay of Biscay port city of Bilbao. The area has three subzones or districts: Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa in the western high country that is home to the best vineyards and leading producers, and the lower, flatter, and drier Rioja Oriental in the east that yields wines of generally lesser quality and prestige. La Rioja vineyards grow mostly tempranillo grapes, Rioja wine’s main ingredient and the source of its bright fruit flavors and excellent aging potential. Buying Rioja Wine There are four official classifications for Rioja wines, regulated by a public regional control board that works closely with growers and winemakers to set and enforce production rules and ensure quality. You should see a colored seal on each Rioja wine bottle, verifying compliance with these standards and traditions. The seals also certify when a wine was made from a single vineyard’s grapes or from multiple vineyards in a particular municipality. That said, there are some modern styles of Rioja wines that, though high in quality and very delicious, are
unregulated and carry only the green generic seal explained below. GRAN RESERVA (BLUE SEAL): These are Rioja’s top wines, generally made from the best grapes in better vintages. They must be aged in both oak barrels and bottles for at least five years, with a minimum of two years in barrels and two years in bottles. Some are left in barrels longer than two years and held altogether longer than five years before release. Excellent vintages yield rich, harmonious, smooth, and graceful wines full of dark fruit, spice and many subtle flavors. RESERVA (MAGENTA SEAL): These wines are made with high-quality grapes and are aged for three years or more, including one year or more in oak barrels and then at least six months in bottles. Though usually less rich than gran reserva wines, good reservas are smooth, balanced, and full-flavored with dark fruit, vanilla and other flavors. Most retail in the $15-$35 range. CRIANZA (RED SEAL): These wines also must age for at least one year in oak barrels followed by at least six months in bottles but can be released when they reach their third year. They tend to be lighter and less complex, but still smooth and easy to drink with lots of cherry and other fruit. The best are wellbalanced and terrific values, often in the $1020 range. GENERIC (GREEN SEAL): These carry a green seal and are typically released within a year or two of aging. There are some top wines, like the highly regarded but not certified Bodegas Artevino’s Orben, which we tried. It was made from special old vines grapes and then aged in oak and bottles extensively. We tasted six Rioja wines from leading producers, including two crianzas, two reservas, one gran rerserva, and the Orben. If you’re unfamiliar with Rioja, I recommend first trying a crianza or reserva. Crianza, by the way, can be a surprisingly tasty and less expensive substitute for pinot noir, providing comparable or better quality in the 10-$20 price range. All the vintages since 2009 have been good or better, the best being 2010-2012, 2015, 2016, 2019, and 2020. In addition to the wines we tasted below, some other notable producers include: La Rioja Alta, Beronia, Ramon Bilbao, Izadi, Faustino, Lan, Baron de Ley, R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia, Montecillo, Muga, Muriel, Ondarre, Marqués de Riscal, and Oscar Tobia. Y

GOOD NEWS LOCAL FOLKS DO REMARKABLE THINGS
It is too easy to become inured in terrible news. Plagues, wildfires and turmoil fill the headlines. Yet, if you look, good things are happening all around — and they are happening in our own backyard; a mom trains first responders about autism, a local high school pitcher gets drafted by the Phillies, habitat for humanity launches a new program for youth, and an Eagle Scout honors the American Flag.
RIGHT Assistant Fire Chief Tony Long, Martin Hedelund, Fire Fighter Jessica Cruz, Dalton Hedelund, Margi Hedelund, Fire Fighters Ralph Giro, Nicholas Garito and Kyle Fleming at the Lighthouse Point Fire Station. The tote bags are hurricane kits supplied by The Autism Society of Florida. The firefighters can hand out the bags to children with autism who may need a distraction during hurricanes. The kits contain items like games, toys, coloring books and even head phones for chidren who are sensitive to sound.

TRAINING DAY ONE MOTHER’S MISSION TO TEACH FIRST RESPONDERS ABOUT PEOPLE WITH AUTISM As the mother of twin 14-year old boys who are both on the autism spectrum, Margi Hedelund exudes positive energy. Her determination to give her sons the best the world has to offer, and possibly more, is evident. I recently sat down with Hedelund and Lighthouse Point Assistant Fire Chief Tony Long at the fire station to talk about a training program organized by The Autism Society of Florida. As part of the program, Hedelund teaches first responders techniques to help them interact with people on the autism spectrum. Both her and Long are quick to tell me how valuable in-person training on this topic is. "What we found is that a lot of agencies were doing things like watching a video, so you'd get roll calls together, and they'd watch a video, and that was their training. Well, we in the autism community said you know what, that's not good enough." Hedelund brings her sons to the training sessions she leads. She recounts that often during the classes, her son "Dalton will be stimming and Martin will run around." At this point, Hedelund explains and demonstrates stimming to me. She raises her arm, swings her hand quickly in the air and describes how these physical behaviors, known as stimming in the autism community, are used by people on the autism spectrum to calm themselves. Variations of stimming are something she demonstrates in person during her sessions. One significant concern in the autism community is interactions

between first responders and people on the autism spectrum. Long mentions that while he watched many training videos on autism, having real-life training along with interaction with Margi's two sons is invaluable. He remembered how he had "watched that video for 30 years probably, and stimming is in there all the time" Yet, he admits he didn't fully comprehend stimming until he witnessed the behavior in person. Hedelund explains when law enforcement approaches a person with autism while stimming, an officer might misinterpret the behavior as aggressive. Yet, stimming is only one problem. Additionally, many people with autism are non-verbal, making communication difficult for first responders. "Our mission, especially for our first responders, is for their safety and the safety of our children and adults with autism. We teach them what it [stimming]
looks like. We give them strategies to communicate with people who are nonverbal, which a lot of our community is." Many people with autism communicate using American Sign Language, device boards and picture exchange communication. Hedelund shows me an app on her son's iPad called TouchChat he uses to communicate. His screen is filled with icons for common words, which he can simply touch to use the words he needs to communicate. She mentions that she will be working with the Lighthouse Point Fire Department to develop visual communication boards specifically tailored to phrases first responders might need in a rescue situation.

Typically, firefighters simply announce themselves to find people in a compromised building. But what happens when someone is non-verbal? How can the firefighters find them? The answer it turns out is fairly simple. Hedelund instructs the first responders to yell, "Can you bang on something? Can you clap your hands? Can you make a noise?" Noting the importance of in-person training, Long remembers, "I've seen that lesson on the video, and it never really struck home, but after this class, there is no way I will forget any of that." "When I hear Tony talking about what he remembers, that's everything to me. That will change someone's life someday," Hedelund notes. She goes on to say, "there are great trainers who make great videos, but it's nothing like having me up there." Additionally, when her trainees interact with her sons, Hedelund feels it an invaluable experience. She also advises parents of children with autism to be proactive and introduce themselves to the first responders in their community.
When I hear Tony talking about what he remembers, that’s everything to me. That will change someone’s life someday. — Margi Hedelund Toward the end of our conversation, Hedelund points out that people with autism have no physical characteristics, so it can be difficult for first-responders to recognize autism. At this point, we have been talking for about 45 minutes and her sons, who have been waiting patiently, start to engage in our conversation. It is obvious that Hedelund is so proud of her boys. She tells me that Martin received straight As at Lighthouse Christian School for all of the eighth grade. Hedelund also leads classes for general education students to learn about autism. She teaches the young students that having autism doesn't mean a person is not intelligent and that we are all different in some way. And then she asks the kids. "What would the world be like if we were all exactly the same? Wouldn't that be boring?" — Susan Rosser
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILDING FUTURES PILOT PROGRAM A new youth program developed by Habitat for Humanity of Broward's Rick Case Habitat Community and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County is getting underway. The program, called Building Futures is modeled after a similar program in Cleveland Ohio. The program's goals are to introduce students to career opportunities in a variety of trades, engage them in taking responsibility for their future and set them on a path for a successful and rewarding career. Through a unique approach, Habitat home building projects will be used to give selected 16 to 19-year-old students eight weeks of intensive hands-on experience with various skilled construction trades. In addition to providing new homes for families searching for affordable housing, this program will give these students a better understanding of the career opportunities available to them in the skilled trades and present them with the introductory skills needed to enter this field. By making these opportunities tangible, the program intends to show the students that their future is within their control and that a successful career, including homeownership, is available. A Rick Case Habitat Community, the largest affordable single-family housing project in Broward's history, will serve as the primary site location for this pilot program. Funding for this pilot program is provided by a generous, anonymous donor with ties to both Cleveland, Ohio and Broward County.

LEFT Ryan Schramm of Boy Scout Troop 238 with his Eagle Scout service project. Jeff Graves for Lighthouse Point magazine
SCOUT’S HONOR EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT PAYS HOMAGE TO U.S. FLAG
Lighthouse Point residents now have a place to drop off their used U.S. flags for appropriate disposal. A U.S. Flag Retirement Box was recently installed in front of City Hall as the Eagle Scout service project of Ryan Schramm, of Boy Scout Troop 238, based at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Lighthouse Point. Ryan, 15, said he chose the flag retirement box as his project because it honors veterans and everyone who has used the flag. In addition, while there are flag retirement boxes in other cities in the area, Lighthouse Point didn't have one. The box looks like a Postal Service mailbox, but is actually a box that Ryan's mother found in an online auction as part of a department store liquidation sale. The metal box was a grey color, so Ryan hired a Deerfield Beach artist to paint it.

Ryan provided his ideas for the design and asked the artist to incorporate them. As the artist painted each section of the box, she would send Ryan photos of it, and he would confirm that it was how he wanted the box to look. The design on the box features a U.S. flag that wraps around one side and the Boy Scout logo on the other side. A few other boy scouts helped Ryan install the box at City Hall, which involved drilling holes in the cement tiles and bolting it down.
The main objective of the Eagle Scout project was for Ryan to learn the project management and leadership skills. The project also involved completing all the related paperwork, including a proposal, description, accounting and a summary. Ryan said the biggest thing he learned from the project is how to manage people so they work together as a team and get the project completed quickly. The total cost of the project was $660, which includes the box itself, the artist, materials and food for the workers. To finance the project, Ryan received donations and sold a number of items via a fundraising website he created, as well as on another website. Among the items sold were one of Ryan's older bikes, a fish tank and clothing. In the end, there was an accounting shortage of approximately $3.50, so Ryan's older brother donated it to the project. Every two weeks, Ryan collects the flags from the box, folds them, and either brings them on Boy Scout campouts for proper retirement or gives them to other Cub and Boy Scout troops for proper retirement. Proper flag etiquette requires the disposal of retired United States flags by fire in a respectful manner. At a scout campout, the flags are disposed of in a special ceremony around the fire. Ryan said he has gotten positive feedback from members of the community regarding the box. Ryan has been involved in scouting since he was 6 years old. He was a Tiger in the Cub Scouts and last month successfully passed his Board Of Review to become an Eagle Scout. An Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony for Ryan, as well as fellow troop members Ethan Cecil and Mason Kolb, is planned for this month. Eagle Scout is the highest rank achievable in scouting and is for a lifetime. — Marie Puleo
PLAY BALL The Philadelphia Phillies selected Calvary Christian School pitcher Andrew Painter in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft. Painter was the 13th pick overall, and he was also named the Gatorade player of the year for Florida. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high academic achievement, and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishing Painter as Florida's best high school baseball player. According to the Sun-Sentinel, Painter watched the draft at home with his family. He was quoted in the same article saying, "There's obviously going to be pressure with everything, but you kind of ignore it — kind of just go and do your thing. I've been in moments like this before on a high stage. So you just keep on working and really keep that same dedication, ignore all the outside stuff and go play your game." The 6-foot-7, 230-pound senior right-handed pitcher compiled a 6-1 record on the mound with a 0.31 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 45.1 innings this past season, leading the Eagles to a 19-5-1 record and a berth in the Class 3A regional quarterfinals. Painter held opposing hitters to a .119 batting average and struck out 54 percent of the total batters he faced. He has volunteered locally on behalf of the Humane Society of Broward County and United Community Options of South Florida in addition to helping to raise nearly $7,000 to benefit the OK Kids Korral in association with the Toby Keith Foundation. "Andrew Painter is one of the best high school baseball players in the country, yet he is humble, selfless and focused on others," said Calvary Christian Academy athletic director Keith Huisman. "He is entirely focused on being a good teammate and raising the level of play of those around him."

Chub Cay BY RICHARD ROSSER

If you fly a drone directly above Chub Cay in the Bahamas, you could point the camera to world-class marlin fishing on the west side of the island and amazing bonefishing on the east side. he main attraction on Chub Cay is the resort, and most visitors come by boat. There is a small airport with flights from Fort Lauderdale to jump the 150 miles of ocean in between. The 2010 census showed 46 people living on the island. From what I saw during a short trip pre-Covid, that number has not changed much. The island of Chub Cay is natural and almost entirely undeveloped, except the marina, resort and a small collection of bungalows for rent and few privately-owned houses. But the resort and marina are first-class all the way as the clientele that venture to Chub Cay appears to be quite serious about all things fishing and boating. Aside from the unpressured fishing grounds due to the cay's remote location, the island is also located at a strategic point where the ocean floor forms "the pocket." Like most pockets, it collects things — lots of

prized fish like marlin, wahoo, tuna and more. When wind conditions are right, baitfish are blown "down the pocket" directly to Chub Cay and the waiting fishermen at the marina. While on the dock, a crew from another boat passed by with a massive Cubera snapper which they said was caught "just over there" and pointed to a boat outside the marina, maybe a half-mile away. That night, a boat was maybe half that distance offshore from the house I was in. The following day we learned about the hefty mutton snappers that were caught during the night. I was a guest of Lighthouse Point resident Greg Edwards who owns a house there with his wife Debbie. I mention this because of a story that Greg told me about his father and trips to the Bahamas in the '70s as a boy. His father was a doctor, and his schedule allowed him to boat around the Bahamas for a month each summer, back when South Florida was very quiet

during that time of year. Dr. Edwards took his sons on these extended journeys, but food needed to be caught — every day and then, everybody was expected to share this burden. My point is that each summer, Greg and his father marauded around the islands seeking adventure — and food. And Greg bought a house on Chub Cay. I respect that level of knowledge about a fishing area. Or you could take of the word of others: "Chub Cay's location provided convenient access to the Bahamian waters known as "The Pocket," which are arguably the best fishing grounds in the entire Western Hemisphere, and, perhaps, the best for billfishing anywhere in the world. A Texas billionaire George Bishop seems to agree. The 83-year-old bought the resort in 2014 from an investment group lead by Kaye Pearson, widely known in Florida as owning the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show and other properties. Mr. Bishop has invested quite a bit in improving the property over the time since. Chub Cay is not only a destination for elite anglers and boaters. A 40-foot slip is $133 per night, and a "day pass" at the resort is around $80, which includes the pool and resort amenities. Rooms at the resort start at $250 per night during the summer. I searched for a 2-bedroom villa during the holiday break, which listed for under $900 per night and a 3-bedroom for about $1100 per night. Y AUGUST 2021 • pointpubs.com
