CREATIVELY

Speaking BY SUSAN ROSSER

Sweating the small stuff Years ago, a good friend of mine worked in promotions for Bristol-Myers in New York. For three summers, we shared a bedroom in a Hamptons time-share house. She was a great roommate because she brought all sorts of free stuff—from shampoo to aspirin. One thing she mentioned has always stuck with me. Women’s and men’s deodorant are the same, but women’s deodorant is more expensive. So, if you don’t mind the masculine scent of the men’s deodorant, you might as well buy it. Determined not to be duped, I’ve been a fan of Gilette ever since. I have to admit, this sort of thing makes me angry. I do not like being fooled. I don’t think anyone does. But in a world where women still don’t earn as much as men for the same jobs, can’t we at least get our deodorant for the same price? It makes you wonder, why isn’t deodorant unisex anyway? So this being summer, the peak season for deodorant…I got to thinking…. what else am I paying more for? So I googled it and I a video on buzzfeed. com that goes on and on about products that women pay more for. (buzzfeed.com/caitlincowie/the-price-difference-between-mens-andwomens-products-is-unr#.nmQknvPpV) Seriously, my fellow women—this is a must-watch. Of course, I couldn’t just take their word for it, so I shlepped down to our local Target to do some comparison shopping of my own. I didn’t need to look too hard. The first deodorant I looked at was Degree, which has both a men’s and a women’s version. The woman’s deodorant is $3.89 for 2.6 ounces. The men’s version is $2.49 for 2.7 ounces. (The same thing held true for Dove; the men’s version is one dollar cheaper and also a bit bigger.) Standing there in disbelief, I did the math—that’s $1.496 per ounce versus $.92 per ounce. I would like to think that somehow the feminine deodorant is super special but I doubt that is the case. Don’t get me wrong, I am a big fan of capitalism and making a buck where you can; however, I am also a big fan of honesty. So, ladies of Lighthouse Point, I urge you to ditch your lady-brand deodorants and make the switch to a “man-brand” of your choice. Think of all the shoes you can buy with the savings.

HolyBuzz THE GARDEN CLUB DEDICATES A POLLINATOR GARDEN AT ST. PAUL THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH BY INGER JONES Two members of The Garden Club of Lighthouse Point had a dream to transform the neglected butterfly garden at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Lighthouse Point. After presenting their proposal to Monsignor Willie Dever it was agreed that the garden club would undertake this continuing community project. The pollinator garden was launched and the dream transformed into a reality. Monsignor’s only request was to have color and lots of it as a focal point. The members chose plants—mostly native and indigenous to the local area—for their color and their ability to attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The garden has more than fulfilled Father Willie’s request for color and is delighting parishioners with the lively activity of the butterflies—especially the imperiled Monarchs. The Garden Club of Lighthouse Point dedicated the Pollinator Garden at noon on Thursday, April 9, 2015. Along with other members of the garden club, the dedication was

honored to have guests Father Willie, Mayor Glenn Troast of Lighthouse Point, and Diana Guidry, Broward County NatureScape Outreach Coordinator. After the ceremony, all returned to Education Hall for lunch and dessert.

project spanning six oceanfront acres at the foot of the Pompano Beach Pier. Plans for the site include 48,500 square feet of restaurant and retail space, a 600-plus car parking garage, a new pedestrian promenade linking the pier with the Intracoastal Waterway, docks along the Intracoastal for proposed water taxis and other watercraft, and a rebuilt pier. “We are delighted to have signed these outstanding restaurants,” said Tim Hernandez, a Principal of Pompano Pier Associates, the developer of the project. “They are the perfect partners

to create the atmosphere we want for the Village. There will be something for everyone, all day long, from ‘quick serve’ to ‘casual’ to ‘fine’ dining.” The two restaurants will be located directly north of the pier. Oceanic Oceanfront Dining is a seafood-themed restaurant and bar. The menu will feature a broad selection of fresh seafood favorites in addition to appetizers, salads, steaks, poultry specialties, and a full bar. Immediately north of Oceanic will be Brimstone Woodfire Grill, a casual upscale restaurant complete with a rooftop bar.

THE BEST OF KEY WEST BY DR. ALLEN FURIA

H

ere are some photographs of the catch we got in two days of great weather and fishing in Key West, one of the best places in our state to fish. Our recent fishing trip was with Captain Robbie Delph of the renowned Delph fishing family. The patriarch, Ralph Delph, left his “normal” life behind to pursue professional fishing in Key West in the 1960’s. His other son perhaps said it best, “When my father fished in tournaments, I expected him to win every time as if that was a reasonable and normal expectation. It wasn’t until I started mating on Charter Boat Row in downtown Key West that I began to truly appreciate

the skills and techniques my father has bestowed upon me throughout my life. Before that I thought everybody fished the same way and my Dad was simply better at it. However it was his methods that set him apart.” We caught eight black grouper, over a dozen yellowtail snapper, four mutton snapper, two king mackerel one goliath grouper, and one dolphin (12 pounds). The biggest black grouper was 38 pounds. The smallest black grouper was 21 pounds The large fish in the pictures was a goliath grouper which weighed over 150 pounds; it turned upside down and peed on the boat.

You say tomato

BY AMANDA JANE

Tomatoes are the perfect fresh ingredient to use in just about anything - salsa, sandwiches, and Bloody Mary’s to name a few. It may surprise you to learn that the tomato is botanically the edible fruit of a tomato plant, and not a vegetable. We have Mexico to thank as the original innovators in using it as a food. The fruit began to spread throughout the world following the Spanish colonization of the Americas. Today it is eaten in countless ways and in many dishes, sauces, salads, and drinks. I personally love to sautÊ them into a warm pasta sauce. Mmm. Tomatoes come in too many classic and heirloom varieties to count. They are most abundant during their peak season in the summertime. To celebrate the first week of summer, I put together this gorgeous cherry tomato salad with dill cream dressing. The recipe uses cherry tomatoes, which are small and rounded ranging in size from a thumb tip up to the size of a golf ball. Red, yellow, green and black varieties exist. At the local Whole Foods, I picked up organic red and yellow varieties that taste so fruity I had to keep from popping the entire carton into my mouth (had to save some for the actual recipe). For this salad, I liked the idea of slicing the tomatoes into halves to give it a chopped salad texture. The contrast of the sweet tomatoes with the tangy cream and dill dressing is amazing.

Cherry Tomato Salad with Dill Cream Dressing Makes two salad servings INGREDIENTS 12 oz. red and yellow cherry tomatoes, halved 2 Tbsp. heavy whipping cream 1 tsp. fresh minced dill, plus more for garnish 1 clove garlic, minced Sea salt and pepper

Place the cherry tomato halves into a large serving bowl. In a small separate bowl, whisk the cream, dill, and garlic. Drizzle the dressing over the tomatoes and toss. Season with salt and pepper and toss. Top with dill for garnish and serve.

Go outside and play BY WILLIAM MELESKI

EMBRACE OUTDOOR LIVING

I

expect in a short while I will find myself repeating the good weather chorus “go outside and play” as my own son Benjamin grows. In the meantime, outdoor living has developed a far more mature theme for me. Hardly a new concept, expanding interior square footage through french doors onto the patio is a predictable embellishment in new home construction or even many renovations. Keeping fashionable, it is important to stay current of the latest exterior embellishments and trends for 2015.

UPDATING THE KITCHEN Since the inception of the wondrous concept of the summer kitchen became mainstream, most have reached their life cycle limit. Isn’t it time to finally breakdown and purchase that voice-activated grill you’ve been drooling over? The Lynx Smart Grill is an interactive fine-tuned grill that responds to voice commands and allows the user to track cooking status from a cellular phone. There are many new equipment upgrades worth looking into in 2015. EASY IMPROVEMENTS Modernizing your favorite furniture setting and pillows covered in Sunbrella’s 2015 latest line may be more appealing to you. It’s not every year that Sunbrella Outdoor Fabric Company which specializes in producing incredibly durable fabric fashions for everything from awnings to furniture and boat cushions releases a new line and this year’s release has something for every style. In addition to many of its prior styles of amazingly durable fabrics, the company has 93 new patterns amid 12 different weaves by way of eco-friendly manufacturing.

EDIBLE ORNAMENTAL GARDENS Likely more maintenance than the normal ‘cut and blow’ team is interested in… but if you are as captivated with vegetables as I am, this is quite rewarding. Just think…. no more foxtail ferns just crunchy carrots. Replace the jasmine vine with tomatoes, sneak in some eggplant under the robellinis and dig out the philodendron and replace with collards! Slightly more appealing for the backyard—but none the less fashionable for 2015.

DECK IT OUT Stone surfacing is elegant and timeless, adding the right combination of wood decking—preferably synthetic long-lasting wood decking—can embellish a space and identify adjacent areas for different purposes. Synthetic wood decking materials have come a long way and now have a far warmer appearance than its origins in commercial use. It is likely you’ll find 2015 trendsetters, creating interest and better vistas without the risk of maintenance, termite infestation or mildew. It’s a simple childhood memory, whatever the temporary relief my parents sought when the orders were given…it was never a doomed march. æ“Go outside and play,” is always great advice. Water gardening 101 BY DONNA TORREY

CARING FOR LOWMAINTENANCE PATIO POND PLANTS

T

here is something primeval about water in the garden. Ponds, fountains, even birdbaths, all bring serenity and completeness to the scenario. Many of us live in homes that have limited area, zero lot lines and some, alas, have only a balcony or porch to call their garden. Patio ponds, or container water gardens are a great idea if you just want to get your feet wet, so to speak. They have all the beauty and mystery of the real thing, only in miniature. They can be set up quickly, moved easily if needed and best of all, take up little space. What’s needed is a preformed patio pond, whiskey barrel (must have a liner or the fish will die drunkards!), or any container at least 20 inches in diameter with no hole in the bottom. You can be creative here: old wheelbarrows that don’t leak, old galvanized tubs or troughs; in fact, garage sales can yield some whimsical ideas. The key is that it must hold water. The depth depends on the type of plant material that you want. First, fill the container with water, then use dechlorinator purchased at the pet store. Now you are ready to “plant” your pond. There are four major types of aquatic plants: lilies (tropical types in S. Florida), marginal or edge, surface or floating, and most importantly, oxygenating. If you have your heart set on a lily, you must have at least four to five hours of direct sun. It is potted in its own pot and placed at the bottom of

36

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

| lhpmag.com

the container, 6 inches below the surface. The marginals are similarly planted and placed two to three inches below the surface. Use bricks or upside-down pots to boost them if necessary. The floaters and oxygenators just hover. Algae are controlled by having at least 50 percent of the surface area covered by vegetation. This starves out the algae, which needs light to grow. Also, to control mosquitoes add a few feeder goldfish, or guppies. Filters or pumps aren’t necessary. The right plant combinations mimic the natural balance in a real pond. Now, sit back and feel the magic of this little water world. Water adds another dimension to the landscape. Many are discovering the joys of the sound of running water, the unique shapes and textures of aquatic plants, and the accompanying wildlife inhabitants. Whether you are ready to leap into a large pond project or just a patio pond, The Garden Gate can help you get started. We have one of the most complete selections of water gardening plants in the area, including blooming, potted, tropical water lilies available year round. Donna Torrey owns The Garden Gate, located at Sears, in the Pompano Citi Centre. For more information and to sign up for her free Garden Journal newsletter, visit donnasgardengate.com.

P

roactiveness, means you are responsible for your own life. You are responsible for the achievement of your own goals, dreams, and aspirations. Proactive people don’t wait around for things to happen. They go out and make things happen. In other words, Don’t wait—create A proactive approach to achieving a goal is listing everything you need to do in advance, actions you need to take, people you need to talk with, etc. Listing all potential roadblocks that might derail you in advance and thinking of how you will handle them is a great way to stay on track and remain in that proactive mindset. Most people tend to be highly reactive to things that are out of their control. This can cause stress and enormous amounts of frustration. If this becomes habit, it can affect sleep patterns, cause health problems, and damage relationships. Being proactive means we focus on the solution, not the problem. When you focus on the solution to a problem, you become more optimistic, hopeful, and you feel much better. Major League Baseball hall-of-fame player and manager credits much of his success to his ability to focus on only what he could control. Proactive people do things to keep them feeling positive and optimistic. They exercise regularly, are constantly learning, reading and growing. By doing this consistently, they feel better about themselves and their ability to deal with challenges when they come up. Proactive people still make mistakes, but when they do they handle the mistake in a proactive way. They acknowledge it, correct it, and learn from it. Are you proactive or reactive most of the time? TO THE POINT The Parenting Game

Teenage mutants AND WE’RE NOT TALKING ABOUT THE TURTLE VARIETY— ADJUSTING TO LIFE WITH A TEENAGER BY DR. ANDREA CORN My son may seem pint-sized, yet he’s showing his mother and me a super-sized attitude. What’s so surprising is we don’t talk like this at home, so my wife and I are wondering who is he emulating, but also why would he imitate being rude? Based on what we’ve seen and heard from a few of his friends, maybe he thinks it’s cool? Or, perhaps it a result of what he reads online, or sees on TV or in movies? We’re not sure; but we’re far from clueless. Yet, our 14 year-old son has us feeling otherwise with remarks such as, “How can you possibly be so stupid as to not know the answer to that question?” It doesn’t seem that long ago, where our dinner table was a pleasant place. We don’t know what’s happened, but our message seems lost. My wife and I are quickly losing our cool as we cannot tolerate his defiance. Now we’ve started having shouting matches without a good resolution. Is it possible to instill an attitude adjustment and realign his mind? Dear Head Scratching Dad and Mom, First, take heart in knowing you are not alone This is a common lament of many parents with young adolescents. During early to mid adolescence (spanning roughly 10-18 years of age) it’s not uncommon to see sarcastic and impolite conversations emerge.

There are a number of reasons causing this behavior: Young teens see their parent’s imperfections, leading them to look elsewhere for other role models. This is all part of the developmental process known as “separation-individuation.” During this phase, teenagers begin acting in ways to distance themselves from their family. Soon, your son will start trying out different personae (positive and negative). Young teens mimic aspects of famous or “trending” individuals. . Young teens display confusing behaviors as their thoughts and feelings are expressed so differently. For example, young teens can think logically and handle abstract problems,

40

which enables them to grasp subjects like biology or geometry. Yet, feelings erupt unevenly and are expressed very dramatically. In part, this is due to the hormonal surges of puberty. Young teens are cognitive of and sensitive to all the changes happening to them. They can overreact and become very guarded (whether it’s a result of acne, braces, undergoing a growth spurt, to developing breasts, etc.) Due to this heightened personal preoccupation, teens are highly sensitized to any comments about them. Last, young teens are absorbed in the moment, so actions and reactions often occur without forethought or considering the consequences. Try not taking your son’s words literally (at first), but rather consider the emotional undertone and what that means. This is easier said than done; especially in the heat of the moment. Teens tend to show feelings through behavior. And, as you noted, teens will make hurtful remarks and use put-downs to make a point. See this as their way of denying their true feelings of awkwardness in hopes of creating more internal discomfort for you. Perhaps your son too needs help realizing how his anger, frustration, disappointment, or annoyance comes across via voice tone, body language, facial expressions, and mannerisms. If you can, focus on what emotions are evoked and reflect back what you heard. An example would be to say, I wonder why you raised your voice after I said________ Or if you son says he’s doesn’t care what you say, direct your comment to what’s in your control and that’s sharing your reaction. For example: “Your Mom and I were upset when you called us _______. If we hear you speak to us in that way again, expect to have this consequence ___________ imposed.” Simply set the right example by your actions. By using your “I” statements and telling him what matters to you or your wife, you are taking personal responsibility rather than blaming him for his rudeness. Remember, young teens are straddling the stage between moving forward with increased responsibilities and letting go of happy-go-lucky childhood times, so progressions and regressions will be present. And, if your childhood was far different in being respectful, that may factor in and may contribute to your present disappointment which in turn your son senses and why he also engages in his sarcastic repartee. Certainly, do not disregard your teen’s mocking mouth. Yet you know it is impossible to police every word. Your wife and you must decide which comments to ignore and which ones require immediate discussion and a warning before a consequence is imposed. Bottom line—make sure he knows his smart-aleck talk is unacceptable. Do you recall the famous quote by Mark Twain? If not, let me refresh your memory --“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.” Chances are, that will be your son in time…but in the meantime—rather than exhaust yourself mentally and emotionally, here are a few quick tips: • You are in charge. Show your son by your everyday demeanor what really matters. • Remind your son of the consequences he’ll face for being disrespectful. By now your son has learned to follow the rules at school, in sports and activities—so he needs to adhere to the rules at home too. • Make reasonable rules. As long as they are fair, then you’ll explain why there’s no room for negotiation. (Yes, they should change as he becomes older and more mature.) Many teens think they are entitled to nearly all the same rights and privileges as their parents, which they aren’t. • Throughout adolescence, your son will be learning what words are acceptable (with his friends) as well as which ones aren’t in your or other adult company. • Don’t expect your son’s mouthy expressions to change overnight. Home is actually a safe place where he can try out a different behavior. It will be up to you to point out what is inappropriate. It will help if you can use this perspective and not automatically personalize what he says or and make yourself upset by his impulsive remarks. Remember he’s just a young teenager and (despite his mistakes) he needs your understanding, guidance, and unconditional love. Andrea Corn is a licensed psychologist with over 15 years of experience helping children, adolescents and adults.

TO THE POINT Tidbits & Trivia

Odd August celebrations A

ugust 2014 contained five Mondays, five Fridays and five Saturdays. I wasn’t writing this column back then or I would have mentioned it. Urban legend has it that this occurs once every 823 years. Not so. It happens every five or so years, depending upon leap year. What does happen every 823 years is, I write a hysterically funny piece that wins the Pulitzer Prize for literature. Mark your calendars, as this should happen in the year 2760. Another legend surrounding this 5-5-5 month, is something the Chinese call “Silver Pockets Full.” Supposedly, if you send a message to your friends making them aware of this occurrence, in four days money will come to you. This actually works. I notified my friends of this somewhat unique month, and four days later I found a quarter in the Publix parking lot. August is both “Hug Month” and “Smile Month.” The more

voluptuous the hugger, the bigger my smile. On the other hand, there are some whose hugs would turn August into “Grimace Month.” The fifth of August is both “International Beer Day” and

44

“National Underwear Day.” I like to combine the two and drink beer in my underwear. Usually, this is done at home, but there have been exceptions. This is the favorite period of those with a sweet tooth, as it is “Eat Dessert First Month.” You can chow down on a chunk of key lime pie before even glancing at your salad and feel no guilt. There is no mention in the literature if it is okay to have dessert again at the end of the meal. However, doctors seeking diabetes patients heartily recommend it. August 10 is “National Lazy Day,” when we are supposed to do nothing. Congress has turned this day into an art form. Six days later is “National Relaxation Day,” which makes sense. One usually needs to relax within a week of doing nothing. Retired people understand this. Think about it, when you’re retired, you never get a day off. On the 13th we celebrate “Lefthanders Day” and “Blame Someone Else Day.” When something goes wrong for me on that day, I blame a southpaw. In the Southern hemisphere, August 22 is “Hoodie Hoo Day.” People go outside and scream “Hoodie Hoo,” which is believed to chase away winter. For those of you old enough to remember Cab Calloway, he sang words similar to those in the song Minnie the Moocher. How this relates to Hoodie Hoo Day will be explained to you in the afterlife. Particularly apropos for Lighthouse Point and environs, is August 7, “National Lighthouse Day.” In 1789 the federal government took responsibility for building and maintaining lighthouses. Sadly, with the advent of radar and global positioning satellites (GPS) the role of lighthouses was diminished. Therefore, I propose that we change Hug Month to “Hug a Lighthouse Month.” If we celebrate National Beer Day sufficiently, this should come easy. August also is the month for “National Go Topless Day.” The founders maintain that women have the same constitutional right as men to bare their chests. As a constitutional scholar, I can find nothing to refute this, although I admit I did not look very hard. However, there is some confusion as to whether the day is the 23rd or the 24th. I say let’s celebrate it both days.

Accidents happen BY MARTIN ZEVIN, AT TORNEY

IF YOU ARE INJURED IN A CAR ACCIDENT, FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR FULL BENEFITS

I

magine you are stopped at a red light, minding your own business. Suddenly, you feel a severe jolt as your vehicle is rear-ended. What do you do? Do not get out of your car and do not move your car from the accident scene unless you are in danger. If you have a cell phone, call 911 and request an ambulance and a police officer. If you do not have a cell phone, wait for someone to come to your vehicle and ask that an ambulance and police be called.

The new personal injury protection (PIP) law (effective January 1, 2013) requires you to prove that you have an “emergency medical condition” in order to receive full benefits. An emergency room visit via ambulance is not required in the statute; however, most insurance companies are accepting this as satisfactory evidence to allow $10,000.00 in PIP benefits, provided you obtain a written statement from a medical doctor. Do not give any statements or make any comments to anyone at the accident scene except to indicate that you are hurt and are waiting for an ambulance and the police. If the paramedics arrive first, be sure to complain about anything that is bothering you, even if it is not severe. The paramedics’ report is public record and the first documentation of any injuries. Request that an ambulance take you to the emergency room for a more complete

46

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

| lhpmag.com

evaluation. The emergency room records are an extremely important part of any future injury claim and confirm that you were hurt. Insurance companies are likely to increase their evaluation of a claim if the injured party was taken by ambulance to the emergency room. It is important for your own health and well being and the benefit of the case. If the police officer arrives while you are still at the accident scene, explain that you were stopped, rear-ended, are injured and wish to go to the emergency room. Be sure that the police officer gives you a Driver Exchange of Information report which indicates the name, address and insurance company of the other driver. When you return home, you should contact your own car insurance company to report the accident and obtain a claim number. Under the so called “No Fault Law”, each injured party is required to submit their medical bills to their own insurance company for payment under the Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage. If you were not at fault, this will not affect your premium. It is also very important to call an attorney who handles personal injury claims to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Many personal injury attorneys, including myself, will refer you to one or more doctors with whom they frequently do business to treat you without incurring any out of pocket expense. The doctors will accept a letter of protection from the attorney to guarantee any payment of their bill not reimbursed by your PIP coverage. The doctors will also provide written confirmation of the “emergency medical condition”, to be sure you get your full $10,000.00 PIP benefits. It is also important that you take pictures of your property damage prior to repair. This is particularly important if your accident resulted in a serious impact. Under the new PIP law, you must obtain some medical treatment within 14 days of the accident; otherwise, you will not receive any PIP benefits at all. But if you are injured in any way, do not wait until the 14th day. The longer you delay treatment, the more likely your PIP benefits will be cut off at $2,500.00. If you are not hurt at the accident scene but wake up the next day in pain, go to the emergency room immediately and then call a personal injury attorney. Martin Zevin is available to discuss wills, trusts, estates, probate and is available for free consultation regarding personal injury claims or car insurance coverage. Shades of Benny Hill BY WENDELL ABERN

Dear Readers, To those of you unfamiliar with Benny Hill, he was a very popular and very funny Vaudevilian-type comedian/ actor/writer on British and American TV several years ago. Some of his shows still appear on cable occasionally. Benny Hill was brilliant. Unlike most comedians, he wrote all his own material: every skit, every parodic song, every word of dialog, every show, every week. And his most recurring characters were well-meaning bumblers: travel agents who send couples to vacation on ice floes; policemen who beleaguer little old ladies; illiterates delivering newscasts. I mention this here because twelve years ago I discovered that Benny Hill’s disciples are running the Fort Lauderdale Veteran’s Administration. In 2003, learning that fellow veterans were receiving each of their medications for $6 per month, I decided to obtain all my prescriptions through the VA. I called the Fort Lauderdale branch. No one answered. I called back, this time waiting through 30 rings. Again, no one answered. So I called the Miami branch. Someone answered and said, “Veteran’s Administration, Miami Branch, please hold.” Three minutes later, she returned and I said, “Did you close your Fort Lauderdale branch?” She said, “No, they just don’t answer the phones there, please hold.” She returned three minutes later and I asked, “How can they not answer the phones? They’re a government agency!” “Fort Lauderdale has only two phones and the people who answer them have too much to do, please hold.” I hung up. I called back the next day and announced myself as Governor Jeb Bush (this was 2003, remember.) She didn’t believe me. But she gave me the number of the national

48

office. Three menus and 33 minutes later, I reached someone who knew what she was doing; she sent me forms to fill out and send to the national military archives. Ten days later, I received papers verifying my two years of military service, six years in the Reserves and honorable discharge. And I have been receiving my medications from the VA Pharmacy ever since. The prices have gone up to $9 per prescription; still a terrific bargain. A few years ago, the VA built a new Fort Lauderdale facility, in Tamarac. As the French proverb states, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” In all fairness, though, twice in the last seven years someone answered a phone. However, three times I left medical reports (from my personal physician) for my nurse practitioner, and she either never read them or never received them. But the fact that Benny Hill’s protégés were still in charge was confirmed last week when the young woman manning the desk at Bravo Section told me I was no longer eligible for veterans’ benefits. “What?” I shouted. “Why?” “I don’t know why,” she said, consulting her computer. “This just says you’re ineligible.” [CONTINUED ON PAGE 50]

“I want to see Dr. Greenberg!” “Sir, I can’t let you see Dr. Greenberg because you’re not eligible.” “Is this a dream? This has to be a dream.” Looking at her computer again, she said, “Sir, according to this, you have not been eligible since February.” “And who decided that? And why?” “I have no idea. But I would suggest you go to the Eligibility Office.” “Wait. If this is a dream, why aren’t you jumping my bones?” “Sir, I have other people waiting. Please go to the Eligibility Office.” I went to Eligibility, where I met Michael, who quickly consulted his computer and said, “Yep. According to Atlanta, Georgia, you are not eligible for benefits.” “Can Atlanta tell you why I’ve been receiving benefits for twelve years and who determined I should no longer get them?” “All it says is that you did not serve on active duty.” “WHAT? I was on a heavy cruiser, the USS Albany, for two years! How do you think I received benefits in the first place?” Michael handed me a four-page form and said, “Look, to settle this, send away to the Naval Archives and they’ll send a copy of your discharge papers.” “Yeah? I’ll do better than that.” I grabbed the documents he gave me, drove home, retrieved my honorable discharge certificate, plus the discharge papers the archives had sent me sixteen years ago, returned to the VA and shoved them in Michael’s face. He studied them for a minute and said, “Yes, but this says you were discharged from the reserves.” “Of course its does! In those days, after two years of active duty, everyone had to serve six years in the reserves!” I waved my DD-214 form at him. “But this also shows I served on active duty!” “Sir, I’m sorry, you’ll have to send them to the archives again.” “Michael,” I said, gathering up my papers, “I’m going to leave you now and go find someone who knows how to read.” Fuming, I headed back to Bravo Section. Once again, his receptionist asked for the last four numbers of my Social Security card and looked me up on her computer. “I’m sorry,” she said, “but I can’t let you see Dr. Greenberg; you’re not eligible.” I turned around slowly, looking to my right and my left. “Sir?” “Where is the camera?” I asked. “And the director?” “What are you talking about?” “Well, it’s very obvious someone is filming a re-make of a Marx Brothers movie. Either that or we’re on Candid Camera.” “Sir, I have other people waiting.” I never saw Dr. Greenberg. But I did send away to the archives. At this writing, I am still waiting for the forms they will send, which will be precisely the ones I already have. I am hoping Michael will be able to read them. Life saver 50-YEAR LIGHTHOUSE POINT RESIDENT, MIKE IVASHUK’S INVENTION LEAD THE WAY FOR AIR BAGS IN MILLIONS OF CARS. BY BILL JOHNSON

T

here’s no doubt about it. Despite the current problems with automobile air bags –- millions of cars being recalled –- air bags have saved many lives and prevented millions of injuries around the world. To some extent we can be grateful for the contribution by a longtime resident of Lighthouse Point, 92-yearold Michael Ivashuk. Ivashuk can reflect on a fascinating and creative career solving a variety of engineering problems, but he may take the most pride in the role he played to develop air bags for automobile safety. You can say his effort helped save air bags from being shelved or their deployment delayed, possibly for many years. The history is chronicled in a stack of newspaper and magazine stories, and in television news reports. His venture into air bags was costly, though. He lost tons of money, but says he would do it again because of the lives saved and crippling injuries prevented. His work on the air bag took grit, determination, a fight against congressional opposition, and a kind of brilliance for solving certain kinds of problems. His wife Ada, who knows him best after 60 years of marriage, puts it this way: “Mike always had energy. He was driven, and in industrial plants he could make a part faster and better than someone else.” Mike says that once he starts something he never gives up. “I don’t quit regardless of consequences.”

His inspiration to design an air bag came when he passed by an auto accident and saw a young girl lying by the roadside, her face barely recognizable. The scene turned out to be an important moment in his life. It fueled his ambition to develop an air bag that would prevent such horrible injuries. At that time, in the 1970s, air bags, which were called “crash cushions,” were already used as an option in GM cars and by some corporate automobile fleets. But they had not yet been proven and widely accepted. They were controversial. “AAA Says Safety Bag Just Hot Air” was the headline on a UPI story that appeared in newspapers in 1972. The automobile club opposed government plans to require air bags by 1976, calling them “irresponsible and premature.” AAA questioned the cost and effectiveness. At one point, the National Highway Transportation [CONTINUED ON PAGE 54]

Blast from the Past

Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducted a high-profile demonstration with two U.S. Senators driving, intending to show the bags really worked. They didn’t. The company that first developed them planned to stop. Those air bags were installed underneath the steering wheel. Mike Ivashuk thought he had a better idea. He designed the bag to attach directly to the center of steering wheel, the way it is today. But how was he going to test his design? There was only one way. He bought used cars and crashed them at various speeds. Friends and employees of his company, Control Laser Corp., volunteered to perform the crash tests. In most cases, Mike says, the volunteers cared about highway safety because of personal experiences. Convinced his air bags could save lives and prevent injuries, Ivashuk began selling them. Newspaper ads pitched the safety device for $75 as good Christmas gifts for family safety. He sold about 7,000. Along the way he earned the support of former Florida Governor Claude Kirk who tested Ivashuk’s air bag in a news report aired on the CBS News with Walter Cronkite, and in 1973 the air bags were installed in police cars in Sunrise. Throughout all of this, controversy and skepticism was heard in Congress where some influential members strove to prevent federal regulations requiring them. But Mike Ivashuk persisted. A key moment of success came when the National Highway Transportation safety Administration tested Ivashuk’s air bag at Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory. A leading business magazine reported that the test marked the first NHTSA trial in which an air bag appeared to work. “The driver-only air bag used in the Cornell test was supplied by Control Laser Corp., a small Pompano Beach company that has been selling the device since June.” As Ivashuk poured money into his air bag venture, insurance companies kept raising the cost of liability insurance. Eventually he couldn’t keep up. His patents expired. He was out of the air bag game. The rest, as they say, is history. The government eventually required air bags in all cars.

54

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

| lhpmag.com

Fortunately, air bags were in no way the major product of Control Laser Corp. Ivashuk developed a variety of things, including lasers for medical procedures and aircraft parts. The Miami Herald reported he was probably the world’s leading producer of lasers used for cutting and finishing surfaces to an incredible smoothness. A business magazine described him as “a pioneer in the practical development of industry’s most fantastic tool, the laser. Mike Ivashuk makes you think it’s easy as working with tinker toys.” Besides his drive, a key to his success was the ability to solve a problem with a device and make it better. ”I don’t really know how I do it,” he says. The solution to engineering problems sometimes came to him in the middle of the night, and he wrote them down. This problem-solving ability was evident many years ago when he worked in a machine shop and for a company that made jet engines, and he dreamed of owning his own business. In the following years he started and managed a number of them before creating Control Laser Corp. During his career he took pride and satisfaction in many successful projects. For instance, he developed a machine to make the springs in automobile seats. Until then, he says, the coils were made by hand. Another project he enjoyed was for NASA, working to improve a rocket’s gyroscope after the first moon shot missed its mark. Mike and his wife Ada are among the early residents of Lighthouse Point, settling here 53 years ago. In that time, Ada has “traveled around the world” and uses that experience to work as a travel agent. With Mike’s background in air bags, he watches with interest the recall of 30 million cars because of faulty air bags. Because his strength in business was making things better and less costly, he is critical of the current air bag design: “They are more complicated than they have to be, and they’re way too expensive. But they’re better than nothing.” If Mike Ivashuk, at 92, decided to go back to work, he might even develop a better one. These days, though, he’d rather play tennis.

PACE P.A.C.E. PROPERTY ASSESSED CLEAN ENERGY

HOME AND BUSINESS OWNERS MAY GET ACCESS TO INNOVATIVE LOANS FOR ENERGY AND WATER SAVING IMPROVEMENTS. BANKERS DON’T LIKE IT. THE FLORIDA SUPREME COURT WILL DECIDE SOON. BY MICHELE CARRASCO

| lhpmag.com

The energy-efficiency financing program known as PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy), is in jeopardy and every home and business owner should be concerned. The Florida Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling on a dispute with the Florida Bankers Association later this year. At stake are hundreds of millions of dollars in low-interest loans for many systems including solar panels, energyefficient air conditioners, insulation, waterefficient appliances and a host of wind-storm protection systems such as new roofs. These loans come with a unique twist: they are automatically transferred when the properties are sold because the loans are part of the taxes on the property. Bankers sued the State of Florida to stop the program because they feel in foreclosure cases, mortgages should be paid back before the energy and storm protection improvements. Currently, the property taxes take priority. Big or small, everyone can benefit if the program is upheld by the court. Local electrician Al Siefert is bidding on a major retrofit of lighting systems at the Isle of Capri Casino in Pompano Beach. “They spend $39,000 per year on parking lot lighting. With new LED lighting, that cost will drop to $10,200—a $275,000 savings over ten years. They’ll pay off the cost of the retrofit in four years,” according to Siefert. Examples like this one should grab the attention of every home and business owner. “The concept is great. No doubt about it,” according Lighthouse Point mayor Glenn Troast. “I see both sides (of the court case)—it’s a real quandary about which is the correct one.” City and state leaders are eager to adapt the program to help meet renewable energy goals and boost energy efficiency throughout the state.

PACE essentially attaches the loan repayment to the property tax bill, thereby making it a first priority should the property owner default on any liens against the property— such as a mortgage. That disagreement could doom the program for everyone in the state including the cities of Tamarac, Pompano Beach, Pembroke Pines and just recently Hollywood that have adopted the PACE programs for their citizens.

What exactly is PACE? PACE started as a pilot program in 2007 in Berkeley, California, and has since been adopted by more than half the states in the nation plus Washington D.C. Financing for energysaving home improvements is repaid through a voluntary assessment on the home owner’s property tax bill. Because the assessment is attached to the property, it passes on to the new owner when sold. The cost savings that come from energy efficient systems are often greater than the monthly tax bill, so it is possible for the program to pay for itself. Potential home buyers receive full disclosure of the assessment and new homeowners continue to pay for, and receive the cost-savings of the retrofits. Besides the property owner’s financial benefit, there are additional social benefits: PACE brings capital into the economy and drives job growth. Additionally, solar energy is a renewable resource that doesn’t add to global warming. The sun that powers solar panels cannot be bought or monopolized like other fuels can, therefore providing energy security and independence. The basic Lighthouse Point Mayor, purpose of this Glenn Troast program is to offer property owners a financial mechanism to install energy-saving retrofits to their homes and businesses—systems such as solar panels, LED lighting, HVAC and wind-resistance improvements – without paying for them upfront, thereby spreading the cost over the life of the system even if the property is sold. Joe Spector, Vice-President of Operations at Ygrene Energy Fund said there has been “a lot of misinformation out there holding people back” but that there is “no true legal obstacle.” The main issue is that the Florida Association of Bankers has challenged the validity of PACE because, as a tax assessment, it has repayment priority over mortgage loans. But this hasn’t stopped many Florida municipalities from joining the program. Ygrene has already funded more than $15 million in loans since mid-2013 in the “Clean Energy Green Corridor PACE District” that serves more than 20 cities and towns in Miami-Dade. Spector estimates funding in Miami-Dade this year alone to be $20 million, and Broward could easily hit $50 million per year once the program gets some footing. EcoCity Partners, which runs the Florida Green Energy Works District in Palm Beach County, has just loaned Brandsmart USA $2.225 million to retrofit their West Palm Beach store, and believes it could fund $100 million in residential loans in Broward

“The concept is great. No doubt about it. I see both sides (of the court case)—it’s a real quandary about which is the correct one.”

County. Brandsmart previously borrowed $1.8 million from Ygrene to retrofit a store in Miami. Although commercial loans could be large, residential loans generally range from $20,000 to $30,000, and have a term of 5, 10, 15 or 20 years. For a five year loan, the interest rate is typically four percent, and for a 20 year loan it’s about seven percent. There is no pre-payment penalty or balloon payment ever due and payments are made monthly or annually with your property taxes.

Who is eligible for PACE? Commercial property owners, homeowners of single-family homes, multi-family homes with up to four units, and condominiums (depending on the ownership structure and HOA rules.)

What is the underwriting criteria? According to Ygrene website, to qualify, total property debt (including Ygrene financing and existing liens) must not exceed the building value, the owner must be current on property taxes and mortgages for three years and must not be in bankruptcy. Utility cost savings must exceed the cost of the improvements and the financing cannot exceed 20 percent of the building value. In addition, your personal credit score has no impact on funding eligibility or interest rate.

Who selects the contractors? Contractors must apply to and be certified by Ygrene or EcoCity. Property owners can then choose from the list of certified contractors and they will be paid directly by the PACE district administrator.

What exactly can you use the money for? Hurricane-impact windows and doors, energy-efficient air conditioners, solar panels, wind-resistant shingles and roofs, insulation in the roof, walls, floors and air ducts, wind generators, water efficient appliances, shutters, skylights, solar tubing, energy-efficient lighting retrofits, occupancy sensors and window filming are all eligible improvements. Not only will these improvements save money on your FPL bill, but some will even lower your insurance premiums. If you’re wondering where the money comes from, no need to worry about taxpayer dollars. The PACE programs operate on private capital, each in their own way, Ygrene uses its own funding, and EcoCity uses both its own funds and partners’ funds. They both try to streamline the process to make it easy for consumers, and both have been active in Florida for a while. Once PACE is operational throughout Broward County, it will be one of the largest districts in Florida, with more residents and businesses than in many other districts. Homeowners can improve their properties, which raises their property values, all while saving money and the environment too. No wonder Scientific American Magazine named PACE as one of the top 20 “world-changing” ideas.

MEDICARE PAID FOR NEARLY 40 MILLION

TRANQUILIZER PRESCRIPTIONSIN 2013 Congress wouldn’t allow Medicare to pay for benzodiazepines such as Xanax and Ativan until 2013. Now, the medications are among the most prescribed in its drug program. BY CHARLES ORNSTEIN AND RYANN GROCHOWSKI JONES, PROPUBLICA This story was co-published with the Boston Globe, the Miami Herald and Health News Florida.

In 2012, Medicare’s massive prescription drug program didn’t spend a penny on popular tranquilizers such as Valium, Xanax and Ativan. The following year, it doled out more than $377 million for the drugs. While it might appear that an epidemic of anxiety swept the nation’s Medicare enrollees, the spike actually reflects a failed policy initiative by Congress. More than a decade ago, when lawmakers created Medicare’s drug program, called Part D, they decided not to pay for anti-anxiety medications. Some of these drugs, known as benzodiazepines, had been linked to abuse and an increased risk of falls and fractures among the elderly, who make up most of the Medicare population. But doctors didn’t stop prescribing the drugs to Medicare enrollees. Patients just found other ways to pay for them. When Congress later reversed the payment policy under pressure from patient groups and medical societies, it swiftly became clear that a huge swath of Medicare’s patients were already using the drugs despite the lack of coverage. In 2013, the year Medicare started covering benzodiazepines, it paid for nearly 40 million prescriptions, a ProPublica analysis of recently released federal data shows. Generic versions of the drugs — alprazolam (which goes by the trade name of Xanax), lorazepam (Ativan) and clonazepam (Klonopin) — were among the top 32 mostprescribed medications in Medicare Part D that year. And it appears these were not new prescriptions.

IMS Health, a healthcare analytics company that tracks drug sales nationwide, logged only a tiny increase in all benzodiazepine prescriptions, including those covered by Medicare, from 2012 to 2013. That probably means Medicare paid mostly for refills of existing prescriptions, said Michael Kleinrock, director of research for the IMS Institute. That millions of seniors are taking Xanax, Ativan and other tranquilizers represents a very real safety concern, said Dr. Brent Forester, a geriatric psychiatrist at Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital in Belmont, Mass. The drugs are popular because they are fast-acting — working quickly, for example, to quell debilitating panic attacks. But they can be habit-forming and disorienting and their effects last longer in older patients. For that reason, the American Geriatrics Society discourages their use in seniors for agitation, insomnia or delirium. The group says they may be appropriate to treat seizure disorders, severe anxiety, withdrawal and in end-of-life care. Forester said he and others who specialize in geriatric psychiatry don’t use benzodiazepines as a “first-, second- or third-line treatment because we see more of the downside than the good side.” Some geriatric psychiatrists worry that doctors may have turned to the drugs in place of antipsychotic medications to sedate patients with conditions such as dementia. In the past several years, Medicare has pushed to reduce the use of antipsychotics, particularly in nursing homes, because of strong warnings about their risks. THE TALENTED MS LYSENGEN LIGHTHOUSE POINT’S NEW RECREATION DIRECTOR

interview by MICHELE CARRASCO As residents of Lighthouse Point, we always brag about our wonderful, close-knit city, and what a great environment it is for families. Beyond the beauty, the safety, and so many other factors, what makes this city great is our recreational opportunities, both on and off the water. We have two large parks, each with a variety of amenities. We have sports programs for children and adults, camps, movie nights, parties, parades, cultural and special events. Heading up this amazing Department of Recreation is the equally amazing new Recreation Director, Becky Lysengen. Her position was recently vacated by John Trudell, who retired after forty years of admirable service. I recently sat down with Becky in her office to learn about her background, her new role, and her hopes for the future of the department.

| lhpmag.com

MC: Let’s start at the beginning. When and where were you born? BL: Fort Lauderdale, July 16, 1978. MC: Have you always lived in this area? BL: Yes, I lived in Deerfield in the Cove area and then during the summer of 1989 or 1990, we moved to Lighthouse Point, near Frank McDonough. MC: What is your earliest memory of Lighthouse Point? BL: Shooting baskets at Frank McDonough, and that’s because I was new to the neighborhood and there weren’t that many children here in the early 90s, so I just went to the park and played basketball by myself. Eventually I started meeting new people and babysitting. MC: Who was the most influential person to you as a child? BL: I would say my fifth-grade teacher, Ms. Carrier, and I actually got to teach with her at Norcrest. She was definitely someone who impacted me – she was young, excited about teaching and just learning. MC: Where did you go to school? BL: Deerfield Beach Elementary, then I moved to Norcrest, then Deerfield Beach Middle and Deerfield Beach High School. MC: How did you spend your summers in Lighthouse Point? BL: My first summer I attended Lighthouse Point summer camp and had a lot of fun there. My older brother and sisters were 10-15 years older than me, and some of their friends were camp counselors, so it was a lot of fun to play bombardment, go on the field trips... Then in the summers later on I pretty much hung around in the parks all day and babysat. MC: What sports did you play as a kid, and do you still play any? BL: Soccer and softball were my main sports, and as I got a little older I also played tennis and volleyball. Now I work out daily, but I also try to get out there and run and play tennis as much as possible, and I play some beach volleyball when I can.

76

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

| lhpmag.com

MC: Do you recall any interesting stories you heard as a child about Lighthouse Point? BL: There was just a feed on Facebook this weekend – one of my older brother’s friends was in town and stopped by Dan Witt, took some pictures, posted them, and it sparked a conversation about summer camp when they were young. They talked about ‘tennis baseball’ and bombardment. It was fun reading all these stories about the fond memories people have of the park back in the 80s. MC: Where did you go to college? BL: University of Florida for my undergraduate degree, and I got my Master’s of Education at FAU. MC: If you could do it again, would you choose a different academic path, or are you satisfied with the route you followed? BL: I did look into sports management, and always thought physical therapy would be a really cool field. I definitely knew I liked helping people because

I cared for my grandmother in high school. She had osteoporosis and was living with us and I helped her with her physical therapy. Being an athlete in high school I experienced a lot of sports training which interested me, but after working at Coconut Creek summer camp, I realized I really enjoyed playing with kids and I knew that that was where my passion was. So I’m very happy with the path I chose. MC: What was your first job after college? BL: I was hired as a substitute art teacher at Norcrest, then in the fall a second grade position opened and that’s what I taught for eight years, then I moved to fifth grade for my last six years. MC: You became Lighthouse Point City Commissioner in 2012. What made you decide to pursue that? BL: That actually happened on the sports field. I was coaching my daughter’s soccer team when she was five, and being out there you meet so

many people in the community, hear so many questions, people asking ,”why do we do that” or “how did that happen?” When Chip LaMarca moved on to the county commission, I was inspired – to see that a local person could move up. When he was successful and won, there was an open seat and I thought, why not run? At the time it was rare to have an open seat – normally you’d have to run against an incumbent. That open seat intrigued me, so I started going to commission meetings that August, Chip won in November, and I filed in January, but I lost. MC: How did your new position as Recreation Director come about? BL: Working so closely with John, and people thought of me as the “fun commissioner” because of some of the events I did, and I still coached, plus I brought up the Cultural Arts Committee which got me tied in with John even more. I worked closely with him on so many events, so we really built a relationship. I knew him first as a kid, then as a parent, and finally as a colleague. One day he randomly talked to me about retirement, and that’s when it clicked for me as something I’d be interested in.

MC: What was the selection process like for this position? How many other candidates were there? BL: Every Broward County municipality received notice about the opening, and the city received about 20 resumes, and selected five of us for a group interview. The Mayor assembled a committee, and that was a little nerveracking. But it was nice to know that I was ultimately chosen based on merit and not just because of who I was in the city. MC: What are some unique qualities that you can bring to this position? BL: My people skills, I feel like I’m a connector. A connector is someone who definitely doesn’t have all the answers, but knows somebody who does. I have NO problem going out and asking someone for help, so if there’s something I don’t know, I’m going to ask the questions. There are a lot of experts out there, and one of the benefits of growing up in this city is that you have built a lot of relationships. I feel like that will really help me, plus the fact that being a mom makes me see things from a certain perspective. Just the other day we were over at Frank McDonough and there was a tree with some dead limbs right at toddler height. I could just see a little toddler walking right into it and poking his eye out, so I noted that we need to get that tree out of there. The perspective of seeing things with the ‘mom eye’ helps. MC: What are your hopes and plans for the recreation program in Lighthouse Point? BL: I hope to involve every kid who wants to be involved in sports so they can develop their love and passion for sports. The main goal is to give an opportunity to kids who want to try,

and I want to ensure that we provide a good service here because I think people move to Lighthouse Point because what we give them in their quality of life. Part of that quality of life is recreation so we want to make sure that all the residents are given that opportunity from the age they can walk, straight through to adulthood so that everyone can enjoy that healthy lifestyle. MC: How do you view the current sports program in comparison to that of other small cities? BL: I think the great thing about it is that we have a hometown feel – you know the refs, you know the coaches. And if you don’t know them, you know someone who does, and that’s nice to know when you’re dropping your kid off for practice. You feel connected. Also we have some traditions here that we’ve had for 40 years with John Trudell, which I hope to continue. We do baseball well, we do soccer well. There are also things that we could maybe expand upon, or maybe revamp or reorganize. MC: What do you see as your biggest challenge? BL: I think my challenge is to learn to be more patient. I am someone who has a lot of energy, and who wants to get things done. I don’t like to wait on things, but there are reasons why I should. I need to be sure that if I’m going to make a change I evaluate ALL the things it could impact, so I’m trying to be aware of that. MC: You are apparently drawn to civil service. What factors have influenced you in that direction? BL: That’s something I got from my grandmother and my mother. When I looked through old pictures, I found one of my grandmother helping out at a voting booth. She was also a fifth grade teacher at Norcrest, and she actually taught John’s brother. I used to keep that photo in my fifth grade classroom. My parents instilled in us that if you were going to be part of any kind of organization that you had to give back. You didn’t just take. So at church, or in the community, they were always ones to step up and volunteer, and that was

78

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

| lhpmag.com

also incumbent upon us as children. MC: Tell me a little about your personal life. BL: I’ve been married to Terry since 2000. I met him at Lighthouse Point Gym. We have Allison who is 11 and Troy who is 10. My sisters live down here, my brother is in California, and my dad and his wife live in Colorado. MC: What does the word ‘family’ mean to you? BL: Support. MC: How would your children describe you as a parent? BL: Hopefully ‘fun’ first. Second, ‘fair’, and ‘motivating’. MC: What accomplishment are you most proud of in your life? BL: Losing the commission seat the first time (in 2011 to current Mayor Glenn Troast) but going back and doing it again a year later. I didn’t give up, I proved myself to the community and I think they responded. To be able to win— that was a great life lesson, not only for my students but for my own children. MC: How do you think people will remember you in Lighthouse Point, long after you retire? BL: Well, I’ve often heard that people remember my smile, and hopefully they’ll remember I was willing to roll up my sleeves and put in the hard work. MC: Who are you a big fan of? BL: Well there are a few people, but probably the biggest is Maya Angelou. I’ve read all her books. She overcame so many obstacles and was a true woman pioneer in so many different things. I thought she was a phenomenal woman. MC: If you could possess one super human power, what would it be? BL: Cloneing—because if there were two of me, I could get more stuff done! MC: What place does religion have in your life?

BL: I grew up going to Trinity United Methodist here in town, got married there, and my children went to the nursery school there. I am Methodist and I feel that it is something that has helped me stay focused and forever grateful and thankful for the opportunities God has given me. One thing I have done all my life is to walk through an open door. But I’ve had to learn that sometimes there are too many open doors, and you have to choose carefully. MC: What an important lesson you’ve learned in life? BL: It’s OK to say no to some things. Once I became a commissioner, I had people come up to me, especially moms, who would remind me to put my family first, and not to overcommit. I had so many opportunities beyond the commission that I could have become involved in, but I decided to just concentrate my efforts locally. That’s what I was elected to do and that’s what I’m going to do. Investing in your community will reward you tremendously. If you’re able to give back, you’re able to receive in abundance. Although Becky has some big shoes to fill in her new role, she certainly seems ready, willing and able to do it. She is intelligent, has relevant experience and the drive to succeed. As we were wrapping up the interview, Becky said that she really wants the community to know that she has the utmost respect for John Trudell and the job he did. She truly wants to honor his legacy and uphold the traditions he started so that the current generation of kids will also have fond memories to reminisce about when they’re adults. Sounds like we’re off to a fantastic start.

Many people seek the “secrets” to investment success. Is it timing the market just right when making “buy” or “sell” decisions? Is it finding “hot” stocks? Actually, these types of moves have little relevance to most investors — even the successful ones. Instead of looking for secret winning formulas, follow tried-and-true investment moves. For example, rather than jumping in and out of the market in a vain attempt to “buy low and sell high,” simply stay invested. By doing so, you can ease the impact of short-term price volatility — and you’ll always be prepared to take advantage of the next market rally. Also, don’t waste time looking for “the ground floor” of the next big thing. The vast majority of new companies won’t achieve that level of success. You’re better off forgetting about the ground floor and instead building a strong foundation of quality investments suitable for your risk tolerance and time horizon. You won’t find any shortcuts to your desired financial destination. But by taking the slow and steady path, you can work toward getting there.

HUMANE SOCIETY PET OF THE MONTH

MEET MICKEY

Mickey is a male papillion mix 6 months old. Mickey loves to snuggle, give kisses and play games! He is in full puppy mode still and he does like to chew on stuff and loves to play! He is trained to use pee pads, but is learning to go outside. He walks perfectly on leash and with regular walks, he will be house trained in no time. He doesn’t like being left alone and would love a home where someone is home most of the time with him. He loves playing with other small dogs and he would love a family with another small playful dog to romp and pal around with. For more information on this beautiful puppy – please contact Florida Humane Society at 954-974-6152 Shelterlocation: 3870 N. Powerline Road, Pompano Beach, FL 33073. Hours: Thursday through Sunday 12-4pm.
