Speaking BY SUSAN ROSSER

Who is Jimi Hendrix? E

very now and then, my sister-in-law Angela sends gifts to my kids for no reason—just a little reminder she is thinking about them. Yesterday, my son Sam received a Jimi Hendrix t-shirt. When he asked me who Jimi Hendrix was—I have to admit, I felt like a failure. I place a certain amount of importance on cultural literacy and obviously when it comes to influential musicians of the 1960s, I had failed to educate my offspring about some of the greats. (Even though I am more a disco fan, Hendrix, especially his 1967 “Are You Experienced” album, should be appreciated by the younger generation.) My older sister had given me quite an education about the music of the 60s and 70s. Why hadn’t I done the same for my own kids? When I was about seven years old, I was a huge fan of the Partridge Family. My big sister, who was a high school senior in 1971, couldn’t stand that I listened to such bubblegum. She had a mission to convert me. We started off with “Meet the Beatles” and gradually moved onto more and more complex music. I remember sneaking into her room when she wasn’t home and putting on record after record. Her collection was diverse—from the Beach Boys to Joni Mitchell to some lesser known artists. I think my music education was complete when I bought my own copy of “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs” by Derek and the Dominoes—which includes an excellent cover of the classic Jimi Hendrix song “Little Bird.” When I was in high school in Manhattan, I would save up to buy record albums. As soon as I had enough money to buy two or three, I would walk from our apartment on East 70th Street to Discomat near Lexington Avenue and 59th Street. My guess is that with the demise of vinyl, Discomat has long gone out of business. But I loved the ritual of meandering up and down the aisles, thumbing through album after album— each seemed to have a more creative cover than the last one. I have to admit, I bought the Chicago album with the chocolate bar cover simply because I loved the artwork—the music was just so-so.

16

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

| lhpmag.com

When I told my husband Richard that I felt like a failure since my son had no clue who Hendrix was, he thought I was exaggerating. But isn’t cultural literacy important? I know we can’t teach our kids everything about art and culture—but where do we draw the line between essential cultural understanding and insignificant pop culture rubbish from long ago? Cultural literacy helps us understand a time and a place. It helps us relate to each other. My sister is 10 years older than I am and listening to “her music” gave me a better understanding of who she was and is today. If my kids listen to some of the music I grew up with, maybe it will be a little window into me. Hey, someday my kid could be on an important job interview, Jimi Hendrix could be mentioned and he will for certain know who he is. Thanks to Apple, now I can easily get decades of music on iTunes and make playlists to share with my kids—much easier, but not the same as vinyl. A few years ago, I gave my album collection to a friend’s son who is a true musician. I had saved all of them as I moved them from house to house many times. I sort of wish I still had them—evidence that I really once was cool (except for those silly Partridge Family albums.)

Park plants BIG CHANGES AT EXCHANGE CLUB PARK

Exchange Club Park, 14 acres of land owned by the Florida Inland Navigation District (F.I.N.D.) and leased to Lighthouse Point and Pompano Beach, is undergoing a big change. It was recently discovered that within the 14 acres of the park rested many non-native species of trees and plants, and because of this, removal must begin and recreation for the residents must be placed on a brief hold. The first phase of the project is focused on removing these nonnative species and will most likely end around in late February. The second phase consists of planting native buffers and installing a new parking area that is estimated to take until the end of May. Pelicans, screech owls, falcons and other animals have been known to live in this park. What of their fates now? Relocation for these animals, and any others that would otherwise be harmed during the construction phase, has taken place. Walk-throughs have been done multiple times to ensure the animals living in these areas are not harmed. In fact, phase two of this operation includes planting “buffers,” which will not only keep the non-native plant species at bay, but it will also provide animals some native foliage to attract them back to the park.

or many of us now living in South Florida, Christmas memories revolved around snow, icicles, and getting warm by the fireplace. Sometimes it’s hard to get into that “Christmas Spirit” when it’s not a white one. Here, I find that the dance of the seasons is most pronounced by the plants that make their grand appearance. In winter, and especially around the solstice, there are a few that distinguish themselves. The ever-present Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) comes from Mexico, and is well suited for our climate. It is not only a popular gift and decorating item, but makes a gorgeous landscape shrub. It likes at least a half day of full sun and is quite drought tolerant once established. Kalanchoe (K. blossfeldiana) from Madagascar is a pretty potted plant or ground cover, 6-12 inches, which comes in almost every color of the rainbow. Drought and salt tolerant it, too, is stimulated

to bloom by the short days. At Christmastime, they are budded and ready to pop. They prefer partial sun and will surprise you when they start blooming again the next winter from last year’s plants. I always know that the holiday season is beginning by my Brunsfelsia grandiflora or Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow. This shrub has lavender flowers that change to white, hence the name. It grows to 8 feet and its flowers just begin to open on Thanksgiving. By Christmas it is covered, and a sight to behold! Plant some of these harbingers of the holidays. Over time, they will satisfy as much as the proverbial “White Christmas”. Well, almost… Donna Torrey owns The Garden Gate, located at Sears, in the Pompano Citi Centre. Sweet mornings BY AMANDA JANE

Winter is coming, the holidays are in full swing, and I’ve been brainstorming a sweet breakfast treat to make for Christmas morning. Bread pudding is such a crowd pleaser—this white chocolate version is a decadent, winter wonderland inspired treat. The recipe calls for buttery croissant bread, left overnight to harden and crisp, cooked in a pollowy custard mixture, topped with white chocolate chips and powdered sugar. Happy holidays!

Winter White Chocolate Bread Pudding INGREDIENTS 2 cups milk 1 1/4 cups heavy cream 3/4 cup white chocolate baking chips, plus more for topping 1/2 cup sugar 5 eggs DIRECTIONS Preheat an oven to 325°F. Grease a large casserole dish and set aside. In a large saucepan over medium-high heat, bring milk and cream to a simmer. Remove from the heat and whisk in the white chocolate until smooth. In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs and salt until blended. Gradually pour the hot white chocolate mixture into the egg 36

Bake for 45 minutes. Once finished, a knife or toothpick poked in the center of the bread pudding should come out cleanly. Serve warm or at room temperature.

ell, it’s that time of year again. And by “that time,” I’m talking about the gorgeous weather we’re having. It’s beautiful right now and especially lovely at night. The stars appear brighter; the air is crisp and refreshing, and there’s a light breeze rustling through the trees. Yes, December is a great time of year to be a night owl. And I know the best place for night owls— Music under the Stars in Pompano Beach. It’s perfect on a gorgeous December night. A live band plays beside the ocean while the moon glows overhead, palm trees rustle, and waves lap the shore. But just because its located oceanside doesn’t mean you have to trudge your lawn chair through the sand. There’s a stretch of lovely manicured grass, which is so convenient to set your chair or blanket upon. And parking? There’s plenty, and many handicapped spots as well. Yes, it’s all so easy; you just show up, sit back, and love every minute of it. Yes, Music under the Stars is perfect in every way. It has beautiful scenery; it’s easily accessible, it’s free….and the best part of all, is that Music under the Stars may very well be good for you. Listening to music has shown to have positive effects on our bodies and our psyche. When the

tempo is fast; our concentration improves and we’re more alert. When the tempo is slow; our breathing and heart rate slow down, and we find ourselves in a calm, meditative state. Music can also bring many other health benefits; like lowering blood pressure, boosting immunity, and easing muscle tension. Music is wonderful for many reasons, but you don’t have to remember any of them to benefit. Just go to relax and be entertained, and know you probably did something good for yourself. So, remember to mark your calendars for the second Friday of every month; and go enjoy Music under the Stars. It’s a wonderful place to be on a gorgeous December night. I look forward to seeing all you fellow night owls at the beach. Music under the Stars features a variety of different bands every second Friday of the month. Chokolosskee hat tournament

T

he Lighthouse Point fishing club organized a fourspecies fishing tournament in the 10,000 islands of our west coast recently. Six boats were assigned for the tournament with guides familiar with the waters around the area. One of our boats was privately owned and not guided. We have a tradition in our club called a “hat tournament”. This is where the boats are placed with either the captains’ names or the anglers’ names on paper in a hat and they are selected at random. This being done, the guys headed out on the assigned boats and “let the tournament begin.” Our team included Rick Moore, Allen Furia and Stu Hirsch. First off, I was trying to find live bait and with the wind blowing out of the southwest, the Gulf was a bit choppy in the morning making it a bit difficult to find the pilchards we wanted. Brian Sanders was our guide and luckily after trying three different spots, we landed enough to get started. So we headed down past Lostman’s

River and started fishing. It was very slow in the beginning as the tide was low and the incoming tide was not expected until noon. A few small snook and redfish were caught and of course the pesky catfish were stealing our bait too. Then after moving around to other spots, our boat and one other boat started to nail some big redfish, only to have the bull sharks eat them before getting them onto the boat. My good friend Arnie was very disappointed when he lost two over 32-34 inches each to the sharks. What a shame, and a waste of a good fish. As the day progressed and the tide came in, the bite got better. We caught more redgish and then two good size Snook to count in the tournament. Our boat with Capt. Sanders came in first place with 25 redfish and two snook while second place went to team Sedel, Sands and Houston. TOP LEFT Allen Furia TOP RIGHT Rick Moore BOTTOM Stu Hirsch

Troubles may be right around the corner that will change your life forever if you are not prepared to deal with them. When I sat and began thinking about this article I was forced to recollect stories and experiences that were life changing or haunting to me personally. Just recently, the loss of two boys out of the Jupiter inlet area has shown just how real and tragic things can become if you are not prepared. When you, your family members, or fellow boaters leave the inlet for a day or night on the ocean preparation for the unimaginable must be in place. A checklist of safety equipment and safety measures must be premeditated for that event. I always think about certain bad things happening and test myself on how quick and prepared I would be if that event happened. Example: I am running towards the east to catch dolphin at 30mph and I am 15 miles offshore with nobody in sight. As I look for floating debris and birds, we unexpectedly hit a submerged steel barrel which was discarded or fell off a cargo freighter. A hole has been torn open in the bow of the boat and the boat begins to fill with water. You have a maximum of 2-4 minutes before your boat is going to sink and is gone from sight. What are you going to do now? You must inform John Barfield wrestled a 350-pound swordfish that jumped into our boat many miles off shore. Serious accidents can happen to even the most seasoned boaters and fishermen.

the Coast Guard and evacuate your boat and crew in one minute or less with all of the necessary items to stay alive. Can you do it? Listed below are points of safety that every boater should not only read but cut out and laminate as a part of their pre trip inspection. 1. YOU MUST HAVE A TOW BOAT MEMBERSHIP BEFORE EVEN THINKING ABOUT LEAVING THE INLET. Tow Boat US or Sea Tow will provide you with a decal that you should place in view from your helm station. Your membership number will be printed on the sticker. If the number is not on it write it on with a permanent marker before applying it to your vessel. The tow boat companies will ask for your membership number if you call. Keep your number visible. 2. WHEN RUNNING OFFSHORE, ALWAYS PUT YOUR RADIO ON CHANNEL 16. If troubles arise you are sitting on the channel that puts you directly in contact with the only people who can help or save you. The Coast Guard and tow boat companies sit on this channel. 3. ALWAYS TAKE NOTICE OF YOUR FLOATING DEVICES OTHER THAN YOUR LIFE JACKETS AND RAFT. Coolers have saved people’s lives along with the bottled water inside them. Anchor buoys are also quick saviors. 4. PLACE YOUR LIFE JACKETS, EPIRB AND LIFE RAFT IN A PLACE THAT IS QUICKLY ACCESSIBLE. You should be able to gather your equipment in a minute or less. In my opinion you

must have a marine raft onboard. The one we carry is a fiveman and is the size of a school backpack. 5. WHEN PEOPLE BOARD YOUR BOAT, YOU MUST LET THEM KNOW WHERE YOUR SAFETY EQUIPMENT IS. If you are hurt during an incident it wont help if you are the only one who knows where the safety equipment is stored. 6. BE SURE TO HAVE ADEQUATE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS PLACED IN PLAIN VIEW. Keeping fire extinguishers hidden inside the console under your tackle bags is not going to help you when your boat catches fire. 7. ALWAYS CARRY WATER ACTIVATED LIGHTS AND A WHISTLE ON YOUR PERSON. Attach them to yourself with a snap swivel on a belt loop or keep one in your pocket. If you fall over at night or drift into the night you can be easily spotted and heard from above. Without a light on you nobody will ever find you in the dark. Without a whistle nobody will ever hear you. 8. MAKE SURE TO HAVE A FLARE KIT AND A GOOD FIRST AID KIT ON BOARD. 9. ALWAYS INFORM SOMEBODY OF A RETURN TO PORT TIME. We have fought large fish into the night. During the fight always contact somebody on the radio during the battle in sunlight hours. Call a friend or fellow fishermen and let them know to contact your land contact by giving them your contacts phone information so they can call them when they return to port. This will not only bring relief to your contact but it can also save from an unnecessary Coast Guard search. If you have no boats in the area then contact your tow boat company and ask them to place a call for you. Tow Boat US and Sea Tow are two companies locally that are standing by for your calls. You can raise either of these companies on channel 16. 10. CHECK THE WEATHER MULTIPLE TIMES BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE DOCK. Weather in south Florida can be extremely unstable and can change in minutes. Checking the weather the night before is not good enough. Upon your arrival to your boat the day of your departure, tune to channel 3 (NOAA) on your vhf radio for the latest sea and weather conditions. 11. TAKE A SAFE BOATING COURSE. The fire stations also have a basic emergency course which covers some of the medical emergencies that you may encounter. CPR and caring for severe cuts are two specific things that the master of each vessel should be trained in. 12. MAKE A LAMINATED PRE-TRIP CHECKLIST WHICH INCLUDES ALL OF THE ITEMS ABOVE. Without your checklist you may miss the one thing on this sheet that will save you or your crews’ life. The more time you spend on the ocean, the more you realize just how dangerous it can be. The problem with boating is that we are not required to have a license to drive on the water. You need to take it upon yourself to be prepared when bad situations arise. The cost to have all of the items outlined above can be $2,500. At first you may think this to be expensive until you add up all of your fishing tackle, gas, food, and things that we purchase for our boat to make it comfortable. The first investment you make in your boat needs to be the safety equipment. Stay safe. RJ Boyle is the owner of RJ Boyle Studio in Lighthouse Point. eing in top shape is a must for athletes and professionals. When you are in great shape, you look better, feel better, and have more

energy. Elite leaders always make time to train both their bodies and their minds. Martial arts, running, and weight training are a few of many great ways to get in shape and stay in shape. Champions in life realize that without high levels of fitness, they will not have the energy to achieve their goals. When you are in shape, your mindset is stronger and you naturally develop more confidence and determination to achieve your goals in all areas of life. We are entering into the holiday season, and in my opinion, it is the most wonderful time of the year. I love the holiday spirit and the joy that seems to fill the air. However, there are many people that tend to focus too much on the festivities and not enough on their own health and fitness. I once read that the average American gains between 7 and 10 pounds during the holidays. Ouch. I am certainly not saying to give up parties and enjoying yourself. Balance is the key. It starts with planning. Make sure as the craziness of the holiday season sets in that you are taking time every day (yes...I said every day) to work on you. That could be training at the gym, the dojo, going for a run, push ups and sit ups at home...it’s all good. Remember, action creates motivation. It’s natural to not feel like it. I have been doing martial arts for 28 years and I love it, but even I have days where I don’t feel like training. But when I take the action, the motivation always follows. Try this, think about how you will feel after the workout BEFORE you start working out. Think of how good you will feel, the increase in your energy and the personal pride you will have. Here are a few areas of fitness to focus on as you pick up the pace this holiday season:

48

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

| lhpmag.com

1. FLEXIBILITY: Focus on head-to-toe stretching. Higher levels of flexibility will give you more energy and help you recover from tough workouts faster. 2. STRENGTH: You can become stronger by lifting weights, pad training, bag work, etc. When you add muscle to your body, you also increase your metabolism making your body a fat-burning machine. 3. ENDURANCE: You can improve endurance through running, sprints, biking, swimming, etc. This will keep your body leaner and stronger. You will have energy throughout the day and feel better.

The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement. You are not in competition with anyone but yourself. Train hard and always be your best. Craig Haley is the Sixth Degree Black Belt instructor at Elite Force Martial Arts, eliteforcemartialarts.com.

TO THE POINT Legal Matters

Work your plan

BY MARTIN ZEVIN, AT TORNEY

A

few years ago, I wrote an article recommending against doing a revocable living trust if you were “underwater” with your mortgage. I wrote that article in 2012, just before the housing market in South Florida began to recover. Many of my clients had bought or refinanced from 2004 to 2006 at the top of the market. However, the last three years have seen a significant increase in prices. This has resulted in many homeowners now having positive equity. I read a recent statistic that, in the third quarter of 2015, 322,701 homeowners in Palm Beach, Broward and Dade counties owed at least 1/4 more than the market value, which was down from 396,272 a year earlier. That means about 74,000 homeowners have gotten their heads above water and may have

some equity. Another recent article indicated that South Florida continues to see higher home price increases than most of the rest of the country. Prices

50

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

| lhpmag.com

IF YOU NOW HAVE EQUITY IN YOUR HOME, CONSIDER PREPARING A TRUST in Palm Beach, Broward and Dade counties rose 7.4 percent in August 2015 compared with August 2014. It was the eighteenth consecutive increase for South Florida. Therefore, many homeowners whose mortgages are currently equal to the value of their home may soon have positive equity. In the article I wrote in 2012, I advised clients to live long enough to see their properties increase in value to exceed the amount of the mortgage; at that time, they could come back to me to discuss a revocable living trust. That time is now here. Without equity in your home, it does not make sense to pay an attorney the fee and costs involved in creating a trust, since you would be burdening your heirs with a property that has a negative equity. However, once that equity turns positive, you are doing your heirs a favor by eliminating the time and money involved in going through probate. Remember also that the trust is called a “revocable living trust.” This means that, as long as you are alive, the Trust remains with you. You can always sell your home and buy a new home as trustee of your trust. You do not need to change thetrust unless you want to change the beneficiaries for the new property. You can also buy additional properties, in Florida or out of state, as trustee of your trust. Therefore, if you now have equity in your home, you should seriously consider creating a trust. Transferring your home to the trust will not change your homestead or your real estate taxes. In addition, regardless of the equity in your home, it is extremely important to have current advance care directives to protect you if you are incapacitated. These include the durable power of attorney (which must specifically include the address of your property) as well as the designation of health care surrogate and living will. New Florida laws could mean that your current documents need to be revised. Martin Zevin is available to discuss wills, trusts, estates, probate and is available for free consultation regarding personal injury claims or car insurance coverage. TO THE POINT It’s Electric

If you build it... ... YOU’LL FIND A REVAMPED BUILDING DEPARTMENT BY AL SIEFERT

I

n most cities, building departments are now referred to as community development departments. In the past, many municipalities

had their own building departments and their own procedures to obtain permits. If you did business in those cities, you quickly learned the requirements to get a building permit. Often, this includes a completed permit application with notarized signatures, a recorded notice of commencement if the work exceeds $2,500, proof of insurance, drawings showing the scope of work and a deposit check. Most cities accept electronic, faxed, and walkin submissions.

52

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

| lhpmag.com

Today, many cities outsource their building divisions tasks to private engineering companies and while many of the requirements are the same, there are a few differences. If you live in Fort Lauderdale or Pompano Beach you will continue to have the same building divisions as you have had in the past. However, if you live in Deerfield Beach, Lighthouse Point, Lauderdale By The Sea, Oakland Park or Wilton Manors, your city is outsourcing their building division. The biggest difference you will see is the cost of the permit. The reason for this is that these private companies pay their inspectors more money. Where the cities typically paid their inspectors $50,000-$70,000 per year with benefits and retirement, these private companies are paying $80,000 and up on the average. This pay I feel is justified based on the amount of education and the training these inspectors are required to have and can be easily added to the permit fee. Another change is that private companies very strict concerning smoke alarms. If you have any work done inside of your home, you will need to have smoke alarms and if you don’t you will need to have them installed and show them on your plans. These private companies don’t mess around and often charge a second review fee for missing items on plans or a re-inspection fee if there is no access for the original inspection—so make sure you contractor has all their ducks in a row to avoid extra costs. TO THE POINT Tidbits & Trivia

Predictions for 2016 BY JAMES TERLIZZI

For those of you who have the effrontery to question my qualifications as a prognosticator, I offer the following: I am a graduate of FSU (Florida Seer University) where I earned a B.S. in BS. In a previous life I was assistant to the Oracle at Delphi. Finally, I am the proud owner of a Swarovski-RomanianGypsy-certified crystal ball which, although used, has very low mileage. It was operated by a little old lady only on Sundays, and is the top-of-the-line model from Clairvoyants “R” Us. The following predictions are subject to a +/- 3% margin of error: Nutritionists will discover a vitamin that removes the black circles from around the eyes of pandas. There will be a massive invasion of ants in every country in the world. This will cause the most common household pet to become the aardvark. Aardvarks “R” Us’ stock price will soar. Delray Beach will change its name. It will be called: “We Brought in so Many Businesses That There’s no Place to Park Beach”. Evening gowns will be designed with cargo pockets, making purses obsolete, and hoop skirts will make a comeback. They will be worn by men. There will be a rabbit stampede in North Dakota. There will be no injuries to the three people who live there. Boeing will unveil a new 2,000-passenger airliner. To save weight and thereby, fuel, there will be no seats. The FAA will waive the seatbelt rule, as passengers will be packed in so tight there will be no need for restraints. As with canned sardines, there will be options. Coach passengers will be sprayed with WD-40, so that they can be packed in. First class passengers will be coated with extra virgin olive oil.

Portholes on the right side of boats will be renamed starboard holes. Wham-O will introduce nuclear powered skateboards. Lays will market genetically modified potato chips—no carbs, no cholesterol, no taste. People who eat them will no longer need flashlights, as their noses will glow in the dark. The rules of etiquette will be updated. It will become permissible to eat pie with a cake fork. Friday the 13th will fall on a Wednesday in January. A British scientist will win the Nobel Prize for finding a cure for hangnails. Greenpeace will proclaim the cockroach to be an endangered species. They will succeed in getting a federal law passed making it a crime to kill a cockroach. You will, however, be permitted to provide “separate-but-equal” living quarters for them. By year’s end, the moon will be two-inches further from the Earth. This will result in lower tides and strengthening of Earth’s gravity, making all of us weigh two-pounds more. Earth’s magnetic field will reverse, making North become South and East become West. This will mean that the South won the Civil War and that there will be “Valley Girls” from Maine to Florida. There will be polecats in Pennsylvania. The newest craze for weight loss will be the “No Food Diet”, as scientists discover that eating food makes you gain weight. Finally, this last prediction comes with an iron-clad, goldplaited, cast in stone, double-your-money-back guarantee: At the end of 2016 Nostradamus will still be dead.

CHABAD RABBI BUILDING COMMUNITY IN LIGHTHOUSE POINT

any different paths build a community but each path begins by finding the common ground we all share. Rabbi Tzvi Dechter of Chabad of North Broward Beach in Lighthouse Point, says he is perfectly poised to do just that. His parents come from two completely different backgrounds and as he and his siblings grew up, they modeled community-building skills in microcosm. Rabbi Dechter’s father was raised in Long Beach, New York, in a home where Judaism was Reform and sports were everybody’s favorite pastime. During college, Rabbi Dechter’s father started exploring more traditional Judaism and he eventually found himself in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, home of the Chabad Lubavitch movement. There he met and married Rabbi Dechter’s mother. Together Rabbi Dechter’s parents blended their diverse backgrounds and created a family that included seven children. They imparted the desire and the skills they used to blend their extended families to their son. This unique background has enabled Rabbi Dechter to seamlessly blend his Crown Heights neighborhood, baseball games at Shea Stadium and now Lighthouse Point. Rabbi Tzvi Dechter and Rabbi Dechter’s father is a teacher and Yeshiva his wife Shana with their principal, his mother a stay-at-home mom, but three children Paya, 1½, Moshe, 4 and building community is the family business. Chaya, 6 The Rabbi has many relatives doing just that all over the country from New York to Arizona by Rabbi Dechter’s father, realized that they had known each and his exposure to them, their lifestyle, skills, goals and other in college and this very personal connection to the commitment has always directed the Rabbi’s chosen path. beach or knocking on doors, Rabbi Dechter says he fits in just fine. “It’s all one already. We are one. It doesn’t have to fit.” The Rabbi’s preparation for his life’s work included a year in Singapore and working visits to over 25 countries all over the world. Exposure to the world, immersed in so many cultures, experiences most of us lack, helped Rabbi Dechter develop the skills to connect with people from many backgrounds. But, of course, all these encounters over his 31 years have trained him to see the common ground more than the differences. His talent to find a connection with every person he meets has helped him forge relationships with self-described Reform Jews and non-Jews alike in the Lighthouse Point community. As he and his wife see it, their job here is “to educate Jew and non-Jew about the light we can bring. We are here to get along and be proud of who we are. Many people think that they have no opportunity to learn about Judaism, but we are here to facilitate that knowledge.” From knocking on doors seven years ago, Rabbi Dechter has now grown his mailing list to over 5,000 names and each one received a calendar at the start of the Jewish New Year in September. Recently a woman in Lighthouse Point called to thank Rabbi Dechter for an article he had written about the fall holiday of Sukkot, a festival of joy, happiness and family. The article described how Jews are commanded to leave their homes for seven days and dwell in huts to remember their days wandering in the desert, to remember that our Creator is in charge and will take care of them. Ninth annual Scroogie awards

BY WENDELL ABERN

Dear Holiday Revelers, Happy holidays to you all! Scroogies are awards I inaugurated in 2006, as an homage to my idol and favorite role model, Ebeneezer Scrooge. This happens to be my favorite column to write all year, because I don’t feel constrained to be funny -- merely nasty. I award Scroogies only to those who have proved themselves worthy through acts of inconsiderateness, boorishness, stupidity, arrogance, or any other trait that just plain rankles me and deserves my curmudgeonly wrath. And each year, I confront the same major problem: hundreds of worthy candidates, limited space to include them all. Following are this year’s very deserving winners:

1 – Donald Trump Yeah, yeah, I know: too easy, too obvious. However, it is not The Donald’s rhetoric or bombast that has incurred my disgust, but the fact that he has denigrated our entire electoral process. Single-handedly, Trump has made the election of an American president look like a carnival side show.

2 – The political press You have been so deftly manipulated by Mr. Trump that it has never dawned on you that his real motive is to make you all look like fools. And won’t you be surprised next spring when he says, “Hey, you guys, I was only kidding; I just wanted this all to look like a carnival side show!”

3 – My bridge partners A few weeks ago, I developed some kind of problem with my voice. I felt fine, but as soon as I spoke, I sounded like

62

an airplane taking off. In a whisper, I announced to my bridge partners that I thought I had laryngitis, so I wouldn’t be talking very much. They all cheered.

4 – The Veteran’s Administration, newest member of my prestigious Scroogie Hall of Fame. For those of you already familiar with my travails with our illustrious VA, I invite you to once again step through the Looking Glass with me and take another dizzying whirl through Wonderland. Late April: “I’m sorry, sir, but you are no longer eligible for benefits. We have no record of you having served active duty.” “What!? I served on a heavy cruiser! I was seasick for two years!” “You’ll have to contact Archives for your discharge papers.” “I sent my discharge papers to Miami 15 years ago!” “You’ll have to call them, sir.” Early May, I call Miami and talk to a young woman. I ask, “Who do I have to sleep with to be declared eligible again? “We need to see your discharge papers.” “You have my discharge papers! I sent them to you fifteen years ago! That’s how I became eligible for benefits in the first place!” “I’m sorry, sir, we have no record of that.” I make copies of my discharge papers and mail them to Miami. Ten days later, a pleasant young woman calls and tells me I am once again eligible for benefits. I thank her and say, “Can you tell me why the discharge papers I sent you fifteen years ago did not suffice?” “We lost them.” [CONTINUED ON PAGE 64]

5 – My fellow condo owners I live in a very small condo association. Only 62 owners. However, some owners have found loopholes in our contract agreements, and have been renting out their units for substantial amounts of time. To prevent this, our board’s lawyers drew up an amended contract, created to close said loopholes; in order to pass this new amendment, we all had to attend a meeting and sign the new document. We needed 40 signatures. Eight of us showed up. Another meeting has been called for sometime next month. In order to make sure my fellow owners understand the seriousness of this issue, I have rented out my condo to Donald Trump.

6 – My old friend, Bernie I recently visited Chicago. Saw my kids, my grandkids and a lot of old pals. Including Bernie, the first friend I ever had in Chi, and long overdue for a Scroogie. We moved to the city in 1943, when I was ten. I came with 1,387 marbles, including 37 glassie boulders and 56 peewee glassies. My first day there, I met Bernie, who was a year younger. We were both holding a bag of marbles. “Wanna play?” he asked. “Sure,” I said. “Ten marbles a game?” I had been the playground champion in Omaha, Fargo and Pierre, South Dakota. “How ‘bout 20 marbles?” I asked. “I don’t know ... “ He was scared. I had him. “Chicken?” “Okay,” he grumbled. “Twenty marbles.” We started play, and just as I was ready to nail his shooter with mine, Bernie shouted, “Moundsies!” “What’s that?” I asked. “You didn’t say, ‘No moundsies.’ I get to build a mound in front of your shooter.” He built the mound. And won the game. “Okay,” I said, refusing to believe I was being hustled by a nine-year old, “This time we play for 50 marbles.” Bernie shrugged. This time, as I prepared to shoot, I said, ‘No moundsies.’ I knelt in the dirt and Bernie yelled out, ‘Sticksies!’” “What the hell is ‘Sticksies?’” “I get to pile sticks in front of your shooter.” Inside of one week, Bernie had every single marble I’d ever won. However, that’s not really the reason Bernie has earned a Scroogie. Bernie is one of those people who screwed up his life by taking a lot of wrong turns. Today, he is an internationallyknown psychologist, author of three books on psychology and Chair of the Psychology Department at UCLA. What a shame. He could have been the greatest con artist in history. Cantankerously Yours, Wendell Abern Wendell Abern can be reached at dendyabern@gmail.com.

TO THE POINT The Parenting Game

Their generation BY DR. ANDREA CORN

IS GENERATION Z READY FOR THE WORLD? Dear Dr. Corn, I worry about today’s teenagers. I wonder about their future and how they will fit in and compete in the job market. I know my thinking has been overly influenced by my fifteen-year-old niece. She’s creative, verbal, and funny, but some of her ideas are unrealistic and self-inflated. She believes she can achieve popularity and recognition online simply through developing what she deems as her “brand.” She posts selfies on Facebook or Instagram. Then the wait begins for comments to arrive from friends, family members or loyal followers. She is unwilling to expand her knowledge through reading, learning and becoming more entrepreneurial about social media. I wonder if constant texting and a lack of face-to-face conversations are detrimental? I’d like to figure out what I can offer to motivate and inspire my niece so she can blossom into her best self? Dear Concerned Adult, Your concern is one that is on the minds of many parents, researchers in psychology, sociology, business and philosophy. Every generation is shaped, influenced and uniquely molded by a host of variables, ranging from one’s immediate family to the various economic, political, technological, health, social, cultural, global and environmental factors that impact each of us. Right now, Generation Z is the label attached to over 23 million young people who were born between 19952012. Presently, the youngest members of Generation Z are entering pre-school, with the majority attending high school and a smaller subset already in college. The designation of “Z” comes after naming the previous Generation “Y,” which is better known as the “Millennial’s” (spanning 1977-1994). These two groups are the beneficiaries of many sophisticated technological advancements. It wasn’t that long ago that Facebook (2004) and Twitter (2006) were innovative social media sites. Today they seem an essential part of our daily lives.

PAY ATTENTION As you noted, your niece is a natural and adept multitasker. Within minutes, she can take a photo, jot down a few

sentences for a blog, post it on her Instagram account, while texting or talking on the phone. Completing various tasks in a short time frame means something is being sacrificed in the process. It appears that Generation Z’s ability to focus has shrunk. In fact, researchers have computed this group’s attention span as lasting eight seconds. Some researchers say this generation has such well-developed filters they are able to sift through and decisively discard what is unessential. At the same time, there are understandable concerns that depth of knowledge and sustained attention is being forfeited for skimming the surface.

WALK WITH ME. TALK WITH ME Teens are so connected to their friends using digital devices, the art of authentic conversation is dying. When dialogue is reduced to texting, all the nuances of real conversation— from voice tones to facial expressions disappear. There are reasons to worry this generation will have less-developed interpersonal skills, especially if they don’t put down their phones. You need to initiate this conversation but it also helps if you also model good interpersonal interactions, and reinforce these messages within her home. [CONTINUED ON PAGE 68]

(*resources 2,3- at bottom of column): The parents of Generation Z witnessed many unimaginable events such at the attacks of September 11. Sadly, there is always a plethora of stress-inducing world problems to worry about: ongoing warfare, terrorism, school shootings, global warming—just to name a few. On the flip side, there’s plenty to be optimistic about: the first African-American president, same-sex marriage rights and unemployment is down. With all of this going on, Generation Z’s have considerable concerns. Attaining emotional and financial security is paramount. And, while many have an entrepreneurial, independent spirit, they also feel pressure to find practical and dependable employment. Given some of the challenges faced by their parents, this is no surprise. Perhaps the key here, is to guide your niece to think about how she can turn a hobby into a career, creating something that is contemporary, and with the potential to serve a greater good.

CAN THE GENERATION Z’s DEMONSTRATE SOLID ENTERPRENURIAL SKILLS? Each generation has in their DNA the desire to be smarter and more successful so a lasting legacy is left. Just in the past decade alone, the apps on our smart phones have changed our lives. We rely on them to help us navigate driving, dining, flying, plus maintaining our health and fitness, as well as our emotional, entertainment and financial interests. Surely, this generation will create more innovative, fun, and useful apps too. Some of this generation’s unique and successful entrepreneur’s are in the social media, entertainment and technology fields. They’ve been fortunate to be at the right place at the right time uniting engineering, math, computer science and business. Your niece may have the desire to create a business even before she’s entered the work force. Encourage her to seek a part-time job as she continues her education so she can learn more about herself. Chances are, she may change careers more than once in her life.

THE TAKE-AWAY By sharing your wisdom and offering your insights, you have the ability to be an influential figure in your niece’s development. Your ongoing communications, support and guidance can be invaluable. And, with a little luck, maybe she’ll develop an online presence that enhances her generation. Be patient and understanding. Let her know you love her and will be there to listen. What actually matters more will be when she realizes how much you care, rather than hearing how much you know. Andrea Corn is a licensed psychologist with over 15 years of experience helping children, adolescents and adults.

Alison A HOMETOWN DARLING FINDS THE SPOTLIGHT AS CAPTAIN OF THE MIAMI DOLPHINS CHEERLEADERS BY RICHARD ROSSER

Alison’s Lighthouse Point softball league player’s card

She’s a quintessential Lighthouse Point girl —born and raised in this small and tightlyknit community, participating in a plethora of community activities and organizations throughout her 24 years. “I consider myself a dancer,” she says. And her love of dance—and her dancing skills—have taken her to the sidelines of the football field at Sun Life Stadium as a four-year veteran and now captain of the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders. Her first name is Alison. Although we can publish her pictures, we cannot publish her last name because the National Football League policy prohibits publication of a cheerleader’s full identity. Now in her fourth season with the Dolphins, she’s there on the sidelines leaping and

high-kicking and cheering during the ten home games each season. (The cheerleaders don’t travel to away games.) You could say that she’s not an Alison-comelately to the cheerleading squad. The desire to be there took root when she was just a child attending Dolphins games with her dad, an avid fan who had front-row season tickets since 1972. “I grew up going to the games,” Alison says. With front-row seats, sitting as close to the cheerleaders as you can get, Alison was inspired by their athletic skills. “I wanted to be one deep down,” she says. As a seven year old, Alison got her first taste of cheerleading, bouncing around the field in a Lighthouse Point Recreation program for kids seven to nine years old. It never would have occurred to her that 12 years later she’d be engaged with professional cheerleaders before

a stadium full of fans and a national television audience. Alison never pursued cheerleading in middle school or high school as sports and dance seems to attract her attentions. It’s no surprise that with a sports-loving dad and her own athletic ability, Alison took up softball when she was eight years old. Alison’s dad Rob “coached all our sports teams.” At first, she was the bat girl for her older brother’s team. Then when she played, she remembers that her first team was sponsored by McLaughlin Foods. She played softball until she was 16 and remembers her last year as her favorite. “I was like a big sister to the younger girls,” she says. Her athleticism, which is relevant to dancing and the requirements of major league cheerleading these days, was noticed by Lighthouse Point Recreation Coordinator Bernie Converse. “She was a terrific softball player,” he says. Chuck McLaughlin—a friendly competitor who coached teams against Alison—remembers her this way: “The apple doesn’t fall far from

the tree. Her parents are great people and they raised a great kid.” Like many girls growing up in Lighthouse Point, with support from parents and other adults, Alison was active in the Girl Scouts which also provided fond memories. She recalls strutting down the streets of the city in the Keeper Days parade holding the banner for Girl Scout Troop 305. Her mom supported the scouts as Alison’s scout leader, along with the mother of Alison’s lifelong closest friend, Katelyn Hummel. The troop held its meetings at what she calls “Miss Jodie’s Courtyard,” which is associated with North Broward Preparatory School, an important factor in her developmental years. Alison received her education at Lighthouse Point Academy and North Broward Prep which operated in Lighthouse Point before re-locating to Coconut Creek. (The academy is an integral part of the prep school organization.) Along the way, Alison’s interest in dance blossomed,

and she credits the excellent arts enrichment program at North Broward Prep and the school’s dance coach, Heather Haley, as the major influences on her development as a dancer. Without them, she would not likely be a professional cheerleader. But that wasn’t her only dance instruction or involvement. Over the years she took dance lessons at “Real Dance,” a local studio. “Alison is a great performer: all smiles and full of energy. I just love her,” says studio owner Suzanne Citere. Alison, along with other girls from the studio, would dance at community events, such as Lighthouse A’Glow, the annual holiday event.

The spark Within most success stories can be found a moment when the drive to accomplish something sparks to life. Yes, Alison had been watching Dolphins games for years and yes, she was a dancer for many years. But actually seeing herself as a cheerleader and committing to the challenge of becoming one can be traced to a specific day. “I had started at FAU but really missed dance from my high school days. I was watching a game at the stadium and it hit me— “I could try out.” She was 18 years old and the cheerleader training class was to begin in the spring on her 19th birthday - a sign she took as very positive. To go from tap dancing for a small town

holiday event to dancing on national television for a professional football team requires a competitive spirit. There’s no shortage of competition for a spot on the Dolphins’ squad. More than a hundred beautiful women with various levels of dancing skill usually show up for the annual auditions. (If you have not already developed dance skills or can’t kick like a Rockette with your foot reaching above your head, you might as well stay home.) When Alison survived the audition and was chosen for the squad, she vividly remembers the first game. “I remember finding my parents in the front row,” in the seats she had sat in all those years. Her experience hasn’t been limited to appearing at Dolphins games. It has also provided lifelong and unforgettable memories from trips overseas to visit our military troops who are always eager for anything that reminds them of home. On two military tours, Alison has been to places most of us may never see --- Afghanistan, Kurdistan, UAE, Ethiopia and Bahrain. The cheerleaders usually present dancing performances, tour the base, meet with service members in the hospital, and do what are called “meet and greets” —talking with troops, having photographs taken with them and signing autographs. A few pro-football players accompany the cheerleaders, bringing another welcome hometown connection to the troops. The value of such tours is expressed by an Army sargent, Aaron Majors, in a Department of Defense news release following a 2012 visit by the cheerleaders to Bagram Air

Base in Afghanistan. “It’s a great morale booster,” he said, “ It puts every one in a good mood. It was well worth the wait in line (to have a photograph taken and get an autograph).” Keenly aware that cheerleading—even as a professional—is not a lifetime career, Alison is now planning her future. She has enrolled in FAU (part-time during football season) to study multi-media journalism. Her love of sports is evident in her hoped-for path to become a sports reporter or work in the

media in some way related to sports. Because she considers herself a dancer, she’ll likely find a way to dance or stay involved in that aspect of the arts as well. After 22 years in Lighthouse Point, Alison moved to Fort Lauderdale. You might say that you can take the girl out of the city, but you can’t take the city out of the girl. “Lighthouse Point is such a great place to grow up,” she says. “I had such an amazing childhood there.”

For more info, please visit www.sfsciencecenter.org.) Planetarium shows and miniature golf are not included in general admission pricing.

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is hosting a big, bad dinosaur exhibit through April 16, 2016. “Dinosaurs Around the World” offers an unforgettable trip to 238 million years ago and allows you to walk with dinosaurs to learn where in the world they came from, and what in the world they did for the 172 million years they ruled the Earth. It also shows you how the continents really were at the time and how the geography impacted their behavior with one another. The exhibit takes you on a journey of the sights and sounds as these giants on display literally come to life before your eyes. “Dinosaurs Around the World” was created by Imagine Exhibitions Inc. The curator and mastermind behind the entire show is the renowned vertebrate paleontologist, Dr. Gregory M. Erikson. Professor Erikson is the leading expert on the biology of dinosaurs and extinct mammals. He has published nearly 100 professional papers and participated in more than 25 paleontological expeditions all around the world. He also holds research appointments with the American Museum of Natural History in New York, The Field Museum in Chicago and University of Alaska’s Museum of

the North in Fairbanks. So when Lew Crampton, the Science Center CEO, says that “these dinosaurs are as true to life as science can make them,” he wasn’t exaggerating. To test this exhibit for ourselves, we took a group of our very own Lighthouse Point magazine delivery boys and girls to take a first look at this exhibit before it opened and they were astounded by the incredible animatronic beasts on display. This exhibit is very audience orientated with “hands on” stations scattered throughout for children to get a feel for the paleontology life. From digging up your own fossils, to deciding and adding colors to a miniature statue of a Velociraptor, to naming your own dinosaur, the exhibit truly gives its audience the full effect. We soon found out that there was more to this exhibit than

just the exhibit itself. Everything they had just learned from these dinosaur displays was put into even more motion on the big screen of the Science Center’s Observatory. Not only is there a film showing in the observatory, but there is also a 3D showing of the film Walking with Dinosaurs, and another documentary type dinosaur film playing just outside of the exhibit entrance. Overall, the exhibit was a success for our local kids, and will be a success for many more. Due to the recent success of the movie Jurassic World, museum officials think the exhibit will be their biggest yet. They expect around 75,000 people to check out the dinosaurs during their nearly six-month stint in South Florida. With the dinosaurs roped off in spaces that look like their natural environments, the exhibit will have no problem making its visitors feel like they’re on a tour of a prehistoric park. It includes 13 dinosaurs from all seven continents over a time span of about 150 million years. With each dinosaur comes a slew

of information presented on a plaque similar to a trading card; what its name means, where it came from, what it eats and hunts, what it most likely looked like, and what sub unit of time it roamed in. What’s more, the dinosaurs’ movements and sounds are triggered by its audience. So with every turn of the corner, there’s a chance to be startled by the next dinosaur on the tour. There are a multitude of reasons why this exhibit has become a staff favorite. From the informational tools, to the light displays, to the setup of the dinosaurs, there are plenty of ways this exhibit “makes you feel like a kid again.” Not to mention, there is a “giant raptor costume that puts you on the inside of one of these animatronics.” How cool is that? Everyone who worked or volunteered had their favorite aspects of the exhibit and were beyond excited to play host to it at the Science Center. This exhibit really will be one of the biggest to come to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium.

“Get on your knees and let’s pray. This may be the last time we’re together.” —CHUCK MCLAUGHLIN’S MOTHER, OCTOBER 1962

The Demons of BY RICHARD ROSSER

hard to imagine Chuck McLaughlin being scared of anything. A decorated U.S. Marine who served in battle in Vietnam, Chuck is as tough as they come. But in 1962, Cuba was the center of a world poised for nuclear destruction as the U.S.S.R. and the United State played out a drama with, horrific potential consequences. It might be fair to say that being scared of Cuba was a smart way to be back then. Missiles with nuclear warheads about five minutes flight-time away from sunny South Florida was obviously unsettling for 11-year-old Chuck. “My mother gathered my four brothers and sisters. She said ‘Get on your knees and let’s pray. This may be the last time we’re together.’” The Cuban missile crisis of 1962 is remembered by people in infinite ways. For young Chuck McLaughlin, Cuba held a special place in his memory. Cuba represented a childhood demon of epic proportions in part because the terrible monster that scared him was indeed the closest the world has been to global, nuclear war. A demon quite real and quite deadly. The Bonefish Mac’s owner came from hard beginnings in the steel-town slum of Crawford Village in McKeesport, Pennsylvania on the bank of the Monongahela River. His father, a WWII veteran, had left his five children. Chuck says he had post traumatic stress disorder after the war which was never diagnosed, much less treated. The family “had nothing. No car. No bikes. No phone.” No one in his town seemed to have anything but a view to Forbes Field, the home of Chuck’s beloved Pittsburgh Steelers who played across the river before moving to Three Rivers Stadium in 1970 which is now Heinz Park. Interviewing Chuck on a chaotic Sunday afternoon while his Steelers beat the Oakland Raiders is not the best plan. But it does give you a sense of how important Pittsburgh is to Chuck. Bonefish Macs if filled with Steelers fans from Wellington to Weston. Football fans, and Chuck McLaughlin fans, surround us while I try to get an understanding of why Chuck was so afraid of Cuba and why going there was so important. “We may be going to war,” said Chuck, quoting the late President Kennedy as he addressed the nation on October 22, 1962. ““Our goal is not the victory of might, but the vindication of right, not peace at the expense of freedom, but both peace and freedom, here in this Hemisphere, and we hope, around the world,” were the famous words of Kennedy. His speech may have been about world peace, but the McLaughlin clan was listening to it’s matriarch pray for just another day together as a family. Cuba was a serious childhood monster and 50-plus years later, that monster was still there. “I’ve carried a big fear all my life. Cuba frightened the world. I wanted to get it off my soul. I don’t want to fear anything in my life.” When President Obama declared that the U.S.A. would

formally reestablish diplomatic relations in July 2015, the doors to more tourism from Americans opened quickly (see sidebar on travel information). “We were always escorted - everywhere we went,” according to Chuck. The official tours for Americans must be educational in nature and are closely monitored by Cuban escorts. Rum and cigars seem to be part of the education if Chuck’s many photographs are indicative of other tours. Chuck stayed at the The Hotel Nacional de Cuba in Havana in the Nat King Cole suite which, oddly, costs more than the Frank Sinatra suite. (But much less than the BARON HANS HEINRICH THYSSEN-BORNEMISZA suite if you’re willing to pay three times as much.) Chuck barely mentioned the hotel otherwise.

Cuba travel for Americans While the Obama administration has made it easier for Americans to travel to Cuba by reducing licensing paperwork, your trip still has to fall under certain guidelines, and your schedule can’t include free time. In other words, you can’t just be a tourist, which is what mainstream cruise passengers are considered. The longstanding ban on Cuba travel has been amended to allow all Americans to take part in tours to Cuba that encourage “people to people” contact. Previously, only religious, educational, and cultural groups could legally travel to Cuba, and then only with specific permission from the U.S. State Department. The bad news is that Americans still can’t simply book a flight and a hotel and head to Cuba. THERE ARE SOME WAYS AROUND THIS • By working through already-existing people-to-people programs with Friendly Planet Tours, Road Scholar, InsightCuba and the Fund for Reconciliation and Development, the aforementioned Cuba Cruise allows Americans onboard. • The people-to-people regulations specifically say that American visitors are in Cuba to learn, not to laze on the beach. TOP The Hotel Nacional de Cuba in Havana BOT TOM Hemingway’s boat

All cruise lines that go are required to offer educational, cultural, artistic or humanitarian activities to meet the guidelines. Cruise lines are doing this in various ways. • Cuba Cruise offers daily lectures on Cuba, as well as meet-and-mingle sessions with their Cuban crew. • International Expeditions has a full schedule that includes visits with musicians, artists, farmers, naturalists and other cultural activities. • And while fathom is still working on its program, Carnival Corp. CEO Arnold Donald said the programming would follow the people-to-people requirements. • Some cruise lines, such as Cuba Cruise, a Canadian Company takes the position that it’s not responsible for enforcing U.S. law. So if you want to skip the educational walking tours in favor of

snorkeling, you can. Americans are allowed to sign up for the same shore excursions as everyone else -- and there are no people to people police to make sure you’re learning. U.S. companies might interpret this policy differently. People-to-people licenses for cruise lines are still rare, and International Expeditions and Fathom probably won’t want to violate the rules right off the bat. Cruise excursions to Cuba can cost around $7500 (Pearl Seas Cruises) $8,500 (Fathom Impact Travel) for two for 9 days. Most cruise lines won’t be leaving from U.S., (namely South Florida,) ports until the middle of 2016. Pearl Seas Cruises and Fathom Impact Travel cruises both leave from the port in Miami, Florida. Alternatively, you can fly to any other country and then fly to Cuba and book all your hotel stays separately. If you use travel sites, such as Trip Advisor, hotels in Cuba can range from $200-$350 a night, but you will also have to pay for two round-trip flights, one round-trip ticket to get you to and from any other country, and another to get you from said country to Cuba and back. For example, a flight to and from Mexico International Airport can range from $200-$500 and a flight from Mexico International Airport to Havana Jose Marti International Airport can range from $350$550.

His Cuban handlers took him to Hemingway’s house, the Cuban Missile Crisis Museum, Hemingway’s favorite bar (La Bodeguita del Medio) and other sites around Havana. They also visited an elementary school which seemed to impress on Chuck just how real people live. “There were three things I learned about the people. Too much government dependency the government runs everything. Stifled entrepreneurship. And stifled intimacy,” said Chuck in his commanding tone - like you really need to get this down on paper. He elaborated about the government and entrepreneurship which Source: www.cruisecritic.com is widely know but the intimacy issue was a bit surprising. “They have no money so lots of people live in the same house—no where to do your thing!” I checked - Cuba has a 1.45 births per woman which is very low—on a par with Japan, Italy and technology, foods, styles and trends. It’s not hard to see Germany. Cuba becoming another Miami, Freeport or Cancun in a few This was a passion trip. One with a clear objective to face years if government changes allow for outside commercial down an enemy from long ago yet very near. Should others development. Until then, the Cuba of 1955 is still there to be take the trip? Paris is prettier. St. Barts has wonderful beaches. observed. New York? Well it can’t compare to Cuba. If you are seeking As for Chuck, “Now I’m good. I don’t fear anything.” a view of a culture that seems stuck in time—Cuba might “I had to go. I had to face the people that I once feared,” said be of interest. Any comparison to the modern world shows McLaughlin over a beer at Bonefish Mac’s, the local restaurant that countries are quickly evolving to be similar with current and bar owned by his wife and him.

Dr. Brian Rask, “Guardian” for WWII veteran Herbert Chauser for the October 2015 Southeast Florida Honor Flight. There are 4,048 gold stars on the WWII Memorial: each one represents 100 American military deaths. That means that more than 400,000 soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, and military personnel lost their lives or remain missing in action in World War II. Of the 16 million men and women in military service during the time, that number represents 1 death out of every 40. When an American went off to fight, the family often displayed in their window a flag bearing a blue star on a white field with a red border. If one of those dreaded telegrams arrived informing them of their family member’s death, they would replace the blue star with a gold one; revealing that family’s sacrifice. “Here We Mark The Price Of Freedom” is inscribed below the Freedom Wall. Senator Bob Dole was on-hand to greet the entourage of veterans.

n Saturday, October 17, five members of the Exchange Club of Pompano Beach volunteered as “guardians” for a South Florida Honor Flight from Fort Lauderdale to Washington DC. Guardians picked up their WWII Veterans around 4:30am and took them to the airport, where they were checked in and boarded a chartered Boeing 737 to Ronald Reagan International Airport. Upon arrival, veterans were greeted by a military and volunteer welcoming committee, then assisted onto four chartered buses for the days activities. The buses received a police escort to the WWII memorial which had only been erected in 2004. Many surviving WWII veterans have not seen the memorial, hence the goal of the National Honor Flight network. After arriving, veterans had the chance to meet Senator Bob Dole and tour the memorial in a wheelchair pushed by their guardian. The tour also included the Lincoln Memorial, Korean War

Memorial and the Washington Monument. Lunch was served on the buses as they headed to Arlington National Cemetery to see the Changing of the Guard. After that, they saw the Air Force Memorial and had a final stop at the Iwo Jima Memorial. Then, guardians and volunteers brought the WWII Vets back to the airport and they returned to Fort Lauderdale. While on the flight, each veteran received a large envelope of mail from family, friends and military supporters. There was a huge welcome home reception of thousands of people, ranging from police, firefighters, military, scouts, bikers, veterans, service organizations, friends and family. This was a very emotional day for everyone involved and it was an honor to be able to serve these members of the Greatest Generation on one last mission! There were approximately 80 WWII veterans on this honor flight that were able to do this trip free of charge. I was guardian for Herbert Chauser who served in the army during the war.

About The National World War II Memorial The memorial was dedicated by President George W. Bush on May 29, 2004 and consists of 56 pillars and a pair of small triumphal arches surrounding a plaza and fountain. It sits on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., at the eastern end of the Reflecting Pool, between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. Two-thirds of the 7.4-acre site is landscaping and water. Each pillar is inscribed with the name of one of the 48 U.S. states of 1945, as well as the District of Columbia, the Alaska Territory and Territory of Hawaii, the Commonwealth of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The northern arch is inscribed with “Atlantic”; the southern one, “Pacific.” The memorial includes two inconspicuously located “Kilroy was here” engravings. Their inclusion in the memorial acknowledges the significance of the symbol to American soldiers during World War II and how it represented their presence and protection wherever it was inscribed. On approaching the semicircle from the east, a visitor walks along one of two walls (right side wall and left side wall) picturing scenes

of the war experience in bas relief. As one approaches on the left (toward the Pacific arch), the scenes begin with soon-to-be servicemen getting physical exams, taking the oath, and being issued military gear. The reliefs progress through several iconic scenes, including combat and burying the dead, ending in a homecoming scene. On the right-side wall (toward the Atlantic arch) there is a similar progression, but with scenes generally more typical of the European theatre. Some scenes take place in England,

Dental Insurance Advice IT’S A FACT: “The mouth can exhibit over 120 NON-DENTAL diseases including Diabetes and Heart Disease!” However, since Dentists are on the frontline of being able to refer for appropriate care, a timely referral from the Dentist to a person’s Physician may result in earlier treatment for a number of potentially life-threatening diseases. An integral component for everyone’s healthcare is having a highly trained Dental Hygienist who not only can deliver a world-class cleaning but one who is highly accomplished in recognizing abnormalities which could lead to dental or even non-dental complications. My practice and my patients are indeed fortunate to have Cheryl as our Dental Hygienist, who in my opinion is one of the best the industry has ever produced. Her amazingly light touch and her diagnostic capabilities continue to be a major benefit to my patients. CAR WASH CORNER Now is the perfect time to stop by and clean that dirty car at Mr. Squeaky’s award winning car wash!

Jay Ghanem, owner of Auto Tech and Body, with wife Mei and children Jude and Meera. Jay ONLY trusts Mr. Squeaky to wash the family van. “Being in the automotive and refinishing business, I would not trust the paint and finish of my own automobiles other than to Mr. Squeaky Car Wash, where I know the finish and luster of my vehicles will be preserved for years to come,” explains Jay.

Developed, owned and operated by the Sasso’s, a Lighthouse Point family.

MR. SQUEAKY CAR WASH is owned and operated for the past 10

years by a Lighthouse Point family. Owners Richard and Lynn Sasso, both attorneys, left the day to day practice of law to launch Mr. Squeaky, with the goal of making Mr. Squeaky one of the best car washes in the nation. Mr. Squeaky has been voted “1 of the Top 50 Car Washes in the USA” by Modern Car Care Magazine, the only South Florida car wash to receive this honor. From top to bottom, Mr. Squeaky is a family business. Their two children, Stella and Tyler, along with thousands of other kids visiting with their parents, love the multi-sensory experience of the 135’ long car wash tunnel that includes colorful soaps, a high pressure Arctic Blast rinse, soft cloth scrubs and Tornado Dryers. With washes starting at just $9, including unlimited FREE use of vacuums, there is no true competitor in all of South Florida. From Buicks to Bentleys, every car is treated with white glove service that has made Mr. Squeaky famous and the go-to place for hundreds of thousands of raving fans. Lynn Sasso explains the philosophy at Mr. Squeaky: “We wanted to create a family-friendly car wash. Our goal is to give each customer a squeaky clean car and a smile on their face!” Voted 1 of the Top 50 Car Washes in the USA by Modern Car Care Magazine Want a free car wash and your photograph in the next Car Wash Corner?
