Creatively Speaking
Real Friends OK here’s the thing — I’m obsessed with “The Real Housewives” on the Bravo television network. Not just one franchise of “The Real Housewives” — I love all of them. I love the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Orange County. I love the Real Housewives of New York and New Jersey. I love the Real Housewives of Dallas, Atlanta and Potomac. And I hear there’s a new one in the making for Salt Lake City. Now that should be interesting. I realize this is a startlingly embarrassing admission. I prefer to think of myself as somewhat intellectual — emphasis on “somewhat.” And indeed I like to imagine my education has enabled me to navigate the world with an analytical mind. These qualities — imaginary or not — sit in direct contrast to my “Real Housewives” obsession. And truth be told, I know a lot of very bright women who are also super fans. Honestly, much of the housewives’ behavior is truly ridiculous and sometimes even repulsive. (Tables have been flipped. Hair has been pulled.) As individuals, hardly any of them are worthy of any sort of admiration. Case in point: on a recent episode, it came to light that several of the ladies of Orange County did not know who Ernest Hemingway was. I mean, it’s not like they couldn’t name one of his novels. They didn’t even know he wrote novels. Clearly, the bell isn’t tolling for them. In fact, every time I watch an episode, a tiny piece of my soul dies. So why do I love this show and these women? As the program is well into its second decade of production, I thought this topic was worthy of my consideration. I’m not the only one. An article on PsychologyToday.com entitled “Why We Can’t Stop Watching ‘The Real Housewives’ credits the show’s success to voyeurism and envy. Sure, most of the housewives are attractive and quite wealthy — sporting infinity pools, Channel bags and closets modeled after Hermés boutiques. But I think this misses the bigger draw — camaraderie. Don’t laugh. After giving a fair amount of thought to this topic, I’ve concluded that I’ve been sucked into this show due in part to a phenomenon I call “the circumstantial friend group.” Think about it. If you’re lucky enough to have a few close friends, typically those friends hail from different segments of your life. Maybe one is a friend from work and maybe one is a friend you know from high school or college. Maybe one is a neighbor. You get

BY SUSAN ROSSER the point. We tend to accumulate friendships from here and there. Rarely do all of our friends form a cohesive troupe. (I guess some people do?) Watching these women takes me back to my school days or summer camp. And if I’m being honest, I sort of miss those days.

During filming, the Real Housewives gather quite often. They meet for lunch. They go to parties. They host each other in their homes. And they travel together too. Of course being forced to hang out with the same people day in and day out has its drawbacks, but it is also good breeding ground for meaningful relationships. I know most people will determine I am a bit unhinged to find any value in this often vapid program. And truthfully, I haven’t really found value, I’ve just realized what I like about it is not necessarily the drama or the oversized closets or even the plethora of million dollar homes. It’s the friendships. Now how’s that for a rationalization? Perhaps I need a posse. Who’s in?

Jazz Reflections
The origins of jazz are deeply rooted in the culture of African Americans. Thanks to a grant from FAB! - Funding Arts Broward and Broward County, the Gold Coast Jazz Society is bringing this free jazz community outreach concert to Pompano Beach featuring members of the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band. The concert will feature jazz standards and music from the Great American Songbook. WHEN: Thursday, Feb. 6, 2020 at 7:30pm WHERE: Pompano Beach Cultural Center, 50 West Atlantic Blvd., Pompano Beach
Troy Anderson’s Wonderful World Band — A Tribute to Louis Armstrong
This concert is a tribute to the jazz legend Louis Armstrong. Troy Anderson got his first taste for music while growing up in a Bahamian family filled with musicians. At the age of 10, he began playing the trumpet and went on to perform in the Florida Sunshine Band and the Gospel Sounds before being introduced to the world of the drum and bugle corps in school. A later stint with the Florida Vanguards taught him how to be an effective lead soprano soloist while performing in front of thousands of screaming fans. Subsequent tours with the famous Bayonne Bridgemen Drum & Bugle Corps helped hone his showmanship skills. WHEN: Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2020 at 12:15pm WHERE: Historic Ali Cultural Arts Center, 353 Martin Luther King Blvd., Pompano Beach
Montage: A Film Series
Montage: A film Series is a program designed to link communities and people through the art of filmmaking and culture. To celebration of Black History Month, there will be a screening and community discussion on “Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People.” This is the first documentary to explore the role of photography in shaping the identity and aspirations of African Americans from slavery to the present. The film probes the recesses of American history through images that have been suppressed, forgotten and lost. Bringing to light the hidden and unknown photos shot by both professional and vernacular African American photographers, the film opens a window into the lives of black families whose experiences and perspectives are often missing from the traditional historical canon. African Americans historically embraced the medium as a way to subvert popular stereotypes as far back as the Civil War era, with Frederick Douglass photographed in a suit and black soldiers posing proudly in their uniforms. These images show a much more complex and nuanced view of American culture and its founding ideals. Inspired by the book “Reflections in Black” by photo historian Deborah Willis, the film features the works of esteemed photographic artists Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simpson, Anthony Barboza, Hank Willis Thomas, Coco Fusco, Clarissa Sligh, James Van Der Zee, Gordon Parks and many others. WHEN: Thursday Feb. 27, 2020 from 7 to 9pm WHERE: Pompano Beach Cultural Center, 50 West Atlantic Blvd., Pompano Beach Around Town contains information originating from other organizations. Police Officer of the Year: Detective John Kruse AT THE CITY COMMISSION MEETING HELD ON JAN. 28, TWO OF THE CITY’S FIRST RESPONDERS WERE HONORED FOR THEIR EXCEPTIONAL WORK DURING THE PAST YEAR. Detective John Kruse was recognized as Police Officer of the Year by Lighthouse Point Police Chief Ross Licata for his accomplishments in 2019, which included solving 43 criminal investigations that he spearheaded, from armed kidnapping, embezzlement and fraud, to hit-and-run incidents. Twenty-six of the cases were solved by arrest; the others were filed with the State Attorney’s Office. “I know the award is for me, but it was really a team effort through all of us,” said Kruse. Kruse was hired by the Lighthouse Point Police Department in 2013, right after completing his training at the police academy of Palm Beach State College. He served as a road patrol officer until he was promoted to detective two years ago. The embezzlement case that Kruse solved last year involved a retired, disabled woman in her 70s whose caretaker embezzled over $30,000 from her “nest egg.” After a two-month investigation, and an hour-long interview, the caretaker confessed to Kruse that she had taken the money. Another case involved perpetrators who were stealing aluminum hurricane shutters from homes in Lighthouse Point and in the Tri-County area, and then selling them at scrap metal yards. The value of the stolen shutters was “tens of thousands” of dollars, said Kruse. A countywide flyer sent out by another law enforcement agency contained information about the suspects that Kruse was able to

correlate using Lighthouse Point’s license plate recognition system. Kruse was able to track down the suspects’ vehicles and solve the investigation in Lighthouse Point. In Broward County, 20 or more cases of grand theft carried out by the suspects were solved as a result of Kruse’s efforts. Last year, Kruse solved 16 hitand-run cases, a number of which occurred on Federal Highway. Some involved injuries, but none involved fatalities. Prior to becoming a police officer, Kruse worked briefly in the business sector, having earned a degree

in business administration and a degree in marketing from Florida Atlantic University. “Ultimately, I decided to take on my passion, which was law enforcement, and I put myself through the academy,” said Kruse. He knew he wanted to help people and affect their lives in a positive way, and believed “law enforcement was the closest way I could get to do that.” Kruse was born and raised in Broward County, and now lives in Coral Springs with his wife and two-year-old son. When he’s not spending time with his family, he enjoys running, working out and playing golf. When Kruse became a detective two years ago, he swapped positions with his brother, Shane, who has been with the Lighthouse Point Police Department for about 10 years, and was working as a detective. Kruse took his brother’s spot in the Detective Bureau, and his brother took his spot as a road patrol corporal. “The timing was impeccable,” said Kruse. Kruse is a marine patrol operator of the Lighthouse Point police boat, and was selected to be on the Quick Reaction Force team, a countywide unit that responds to high-risk critical incidents, and also carries out crowd management. Kruse likes the tight-knit community of Lighthouse Point and the police department. “I have no plans on leaving any time soon,” he said. Y

Firefighter of the Year: Driver Engineer/Paramedic Nick Palmisano The honor of being named the Lighthouse Point Firefighter of the Year was awarded to Driver Engineer/ Paramedic Nick Palmisano. “Nick has proven himself not only as a team player but as a leader, committing to new projects to improve the Lighthouse Point Fire Department and the service we deliver to our citizens,” said Lighthouse Point Fire Chief Shawn Gilmartin. Palmisano was hired by the Lighthouse Point Fire Department in 2010. He did his fire training at Coral Springs Fire Academy, then went to Emergency Medical Sciences (EMS) Academy in Plantation for his emergency medical technician (EMT) and paramedics training. Palmisano is a state certified firefighter paramedic, driver engineer, fire officer and fire instructor. He is also one of the department’s fire inspectors who perform fire safety inspections throughout Lighthouse Point during the year, while also completing their firefighterparamedic duties. Gilmartin praised Palmisano for his work on a major project he undertook last year – converting the department’s fire inspections into a digital format. Palmisano spent hours scanning and entering old inspection reports into a new records management database that allows for easier retrieval of the archived information. The second step of the project is to digitize the inspection forms so they can be completed electronically on computer tablets, instead of on sheets of carbon paper, which is the current method used. Using new software, Palmisano is in the process of developing the

checklists for those inspections, which will include the applicable fire codes, and eliminate the need to “thumb through the code book.” “It will streamline things a lot,” said Palmisano. The checklists will be customized for each type of commercial property inspected. Palmisano has also been entering pre-fire plan data that can be easily accessed and updated when needed. Palmisano has also been upgrading the department’s “Active 911” map which shows the location of all calls that come through the dispatching system. He entered the locations of approximately 380 fire hydrants on the map, so firefighters will know where the closest one is. In addition, he has been entering Knox Box locations (a Knox Box holds an access

key for a business or residence so fire personnel can enter in emergency situations). Palmisano was born in Hollywood, Florida, and grew up mainly in Davie. He said he likes his 24-hours-on, 48-hours-off work schedule because it allows him to spend time with his two boys, ages 5 and 3. He coaches their Little League T-ball teams on the same field in Pembroke Lakes that he grew up playing T-ball on, and where his dad coached him. His dad now assists him coach his sons’ T-ball teams. Palmisano played football and baseball at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team after his freshman year at Broward College, but chose to attend Stetson University in Deland, Florida, on a baseball scholarship. He got a business degree from Stetson, with a major in accounting and a minor in electronic business technology. Palmisano goes to the gym daily. On his days off, he works out for up to 2.5 hours. Because his wife Jill works, he also does the cooking on his days off – chicken parmesan, eggplant, meatballs, grilled fish and “anything healthy.” For the past five years, Palmisano has served as the union representative for the Lighthouse Point Fire Department, and as its pension board representative since last year. Palmisano said he wanted to become a firefighter because he likes the camaraderie and being part of a team, which he always had playing sports. “It’s a fulfilling career,” said Palmisano. “You’re called on to interact in a person’s life during a time of emergency, and if you can help them, it’s great.” Y

Lighthouse Point Yacht Club Redevelopment Plans Are Moving Forward Plans to redevelop the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club moved further along last month when a revised site plan was presented informally to the Planning and Zoning Board by Terry Paterson, the club’s owner and developer. Paterson was seeking feedback from the Board before submitting a final site plan and other items that the Board will vote on at a future meeting, possibly in March. Paterson is proposing to build 20 luxury townhomes and two singlefamily homes on a portion of the yacht club property that is currently used for tennis courts and parking. Paterson plans to use the proceeds from the sale of the residential units to subsidize an updated yacht club facility. During his presentation to the Planning and Zoning Board, Paterson explained his goals for the development timeline. He said he wants to start building a new tennis center/bistro as soon as possible, and have it finished by Sept. 1, when members come back after the club’s annual closure during the month of August. The one-story tennis center/bistro would be built on existing clay tennis courts, east of the club’s entrance on NE 42nd Street, and would serve as a temporary clubhouse once the existing clubhouse is demolished. Paterson said that a lot of the interior from the club’s existing lounge will be reused inside the tennis center/bistro, to “keep the nostalgic value of some of the things that we have.” Paterson said he would like to start the demolition permit process for the main clubhouse in June,

which is probably a three-month process, and then demolish the clubhouse by the end of August or the beginning of September. His goal is to start vertical construction of the new clubhouse around Sept. 1, which should take about 18 months to complete, possibly less.
“Commercial does go a lot quicker than residential, but we’ve got a lot of detail that we have to do to build out this club, so I need the time,” said Paterson. The sequence in which the townhomes will be built is based on sales. The plan is to build five townhome buildings with four 3-story units each. Paterson said that before his bank will release funding for each townhome building, two out of the four units in

the building must be sold. Paterson said he currently has two units sold in one building, and one unit sold in another building. He expects that by the time he receives all his approvals from the City, construction on those two buildings will be ready to start immediately. Once construction gets underway, each townhome building will take 18 months to complete. Paterson explained that once he starts a building, the bank money is already in place, and “it doesn’t matter what happens to the economy...that building is built from start to finish.” He clarified that he does not have to rely on getting the profits from the sale of the residential units before he can start building the clubhouse. Profits from the residential units will pay off the loan that will be in place for the construction of the clubhouse, not go towards building it. “We’re building the club regardless of the townhouses,” he said. The plan is for the existing pool area, gym and marina to remain in operation during most of the construction. At least five tennis courts will remain in operation at all times. Once the new clubhouse is fully operational, the building that is the current gym will be turned into an indoor basketball court and kids center. The new clubhouse will have its own 10,000-square-foot gym. The existing pool will be demolished and two lap pools and a kids’ pool will be built. In order to carry out his redevelopment plans, Paterson is requesting several text >>>

The yacht club property is currently zoned as a business district that does not allow for a residential component. In order to build the townhomes and single-family homes, Paterson is requesting that a new zoning district be created. According to Mayor Glenn Troast, the new zoning district is called “Lighthouse Point Yacht Club mixeduse zoning district.” Paterson is also requesting two text amendments to the city’s Comprehensive Plan. These text amendments relate to building heights on the yacht club property. Additional requests are being made pertaining to the number of parking spaces required, the percentage of pervious and impervious areas required on the property, the length of the townhome buildings, property setbacks, and the operation of a limited number of yacht club facility-related businesses out of the yacht club premises. and Susan Motley emphasized that they would not be prepared to approve anything until the Board receives a complete package that includes a development agreement, the text amendments to the city’s Comprehensive Plan and zoning code, the final site plan, a detailed phase plan, a parking study, a traffic analysis, and a landscape plan. Preparations are underway to demolish the former gas station that occupies the site of the new Lighthouse Point fire station and emergency operations center, which will be built at 2101 NE 36th Street (Sample Road), between NE 21st Way and NE 21st Avenue. The building that housed the gas station has stood vacant on the property for about 14 years. The goal is for the demolition to take place by the end of February, according to Lighthouse Point Mayor Glenn Troast. The former convenience store on the northwest corner of the site will also be demolished. The two buildings have undergone asbestos surveys, which are required before demolition.
Zoning Board meeting, Paterson’s attorney submitted a revised development agreement to the City, along with other documents. City staff has been reviewing the documents, and providing feedback to Paterson and his attorney, according to Mayor Troast. Once the package is finalized, it will go to the city’s Development Review Committee, the Planning and Zoning Board and the City Commission. The final site plan will also go to the Community Appearance Board for approval. Last October, the Broward County Commission approved Paterson’s application for a land use plan amendment that allows up to 22 residential units to be built on the yacht club property. In April, the City Commission gave its preliminary approval for the land use change. The ordinance will come before the City Commission for a second and final vote. “I’m very excited that this project is moving forward and I think they’ve come up with a very exciting plan for the yacht club,” said Troast. “It’s just a matter of getting everything done to make it happen.” Y
Troast said the City plans to hold a “demolition ceremony” that residents can attend. The City purchased the land for the new fire station in June 2018 at a price of $1.75 million. The new fire station is one of the five projects that will be funded with proceeds from the $16.5 million bond issue approved by Lighthouse Point voters in November 2018. The other bond projects are a new community center at Dan Witt Park; a new public works administration building; renovation of the existing public works building; and the buildout of the second floor of the library. Broward County is Planning a Reclaimed Water System for Its Lighthouse Point Customers Broward County has plans to provide its water and wastewater customers in Lighthouse Point with a reclaimed water system for irrigation purposes. The new system would require customers to use only reclaimed water on their lawns and landscaping, not potable (drinking) water. According to Broward County Water and Wastewater Services (BCWWS), construction of the reclaimed water system in Lighthouse Point is currently expected to begin in March 2022, and to be completed by December 2024. As per County ordinance, customers will be required to connect to the reclaimed system if they have an existing irrigation system. The use of potable water for irrigation is prohibited if reclaimed water is available. This prohibition is effective 180 days after notification of availability of reclaimed water. Customers will be required to pay for the cost to hook up to the reclaimed water system once it is constructed, and the meter must be connected to their irrigation system by a licensed contractor. Reclaimed water is wastewater that has been secondarily treated, filtered, disinfected and transformed into a product that is clear and odorless. It is not subject to the twice a week year round irrigation conservation rule. Broward County’s reclaimed, or reuse, water system is similar to the City of Pompano Beach reuse water system, known as OASIS. In 2017, Pompano Beach introduced the OASIS reuse system to its customers in Lighthouse Point. The first two construction phases in Lighthouse

Point have been completed, and a third phase is slated to begin this fiscal year. Pompano’s service area in Lighthouse Point is at the southern end of the city, roughly between NE 24th Street and NE 31st Street, and east of Lighthouse Drive. Broward County currently purchases 1 million gallons per month of reuse water from the City of Pompano Beach to serve its customers in Pompano Highlands. Broward County will purchase additional reuse water from Pompano Beach to serve its future customers in Lighthouse Point. BCWWS estimates that up to 1 million gallons per day (MGD) will be required after the reuse system in Lighthouse Point is constructed and all customers have connected. Broward County currently operates a 10 MGD reuse facility located at the North Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in Pompano Beach. The reuse facility is currently expanding to 26 MGD, with completion estimated for October 2021. The additional 16 MGD of reuse water is intended for future expansion to north and northwest Broward County, and to Palm Beach County. The current estimated cost for Broward County’s reuse water project in Lighthouse Point is $42.5 million ($35.5 million construction, $7 million design). Funding for the project has already been budgeted by BCWWS. The design of the project is anticipated to begin in mid 2020,

once an agreement has been negotiated and approved by the Broward County Commission. The design is expected to take approximately 18 months to complete. According to BCWWS, public outreach usually takes place after the design has reached the 60 percent point. A pump station may need to be built on the northwest corner of the Federal Highway and NE 49th Street intersection. This will be determined during the project design. The project was presented to the Lighthouse Point City Commission last November by a member of the BCWWS Engineering Division. Y

Eliminate Stress and Worry BY CRAIG HALEY
I DON’T KNOW A PERSON IN THE WORLD WHO HAS NOT DEALT WITH PERIODS OF STRESS IN THEIR LIVES. SOME PEOPLE GO THROUGH rough patches then come out of them. For others, stress, worry and anxiety are a problem that lingers. Pastor Tommy Boland, of The Cross Church in Deerfield Beach, says, that everyone is always in one of three phases of life: • You are either preparing for the storm — a crisis or challenge. • You are in the storm — dealing with turmoil or a problem of some kind. • You are coming out of the storm — the problem just passed. In his book “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living,” Dale Carnegie gives several strategies and philosophies to help deal with worry, anxiety and stress once and for all.
Strategy #1: Live in Day Tight Compartments
Living in day tight compartments means to focus on today and today only. Stress sneaks up on us if we worry about what happened yesterday and what may happen tomorrow. When you focus on today, you dive into today’s work and you attack it with poise and calmness. You realize that yesterday is gone and you can’t control what will happen tomorrow. By not allowing yourself to worry about the past and future, your stress levels go down and you feel much more relaxed.
Strategy #2: Accept the Worst Thing That Could Happen
Another way to reduce stress is to consider the worst possible thing that could happen regarding what you are worried about. When you think it through and decide you are okay with the worst possible scenario, your stress levels drop tremendously. Often our worries are totally false and have no substance at all. I remember Russell Brunson, owner of Click Funnels, recounting a time when his business hit a massive downturn. His stress levels hit a peak. He called his buddy, Tony Robbins, and Tony said if things got worse, his company would take over Russell’s and they could work together. Knowing that working with Tony Robbins’ was the worst thing that could happen regarding his business,

Russell was able to relax, think clearly, and focus on solutions. In the end, he got his business out of the challenge and he did not have to merge with Tony’s company.
Strategy #3: Follow this Four Step Process to Deal with any Challenge
1. Write down your concerns. This will clarify your thoughts and allow you to focus more clearly. 2. Think solutions! Next, write down all possible solutions. Focus on actions to fix the situation or make it better. 3. Decide! Next decide on what to do. The key here is to make a decision. Many people struggle with this and their situation never changes. The absolute wrong decision is to not decide at all and accept things the way they are now. If you make the wrong decision, no big deal. Stop and decide on another alternative. You will make more progress by deciding the wrong thing and changing your mind then not deciding at all. 4. Take massive action! Get busy following through on your decision. Don’t worry or focus on the outcome. Just focus on taking massive action until you are done. Nothing kills worry like taking massive action on a problem. At the end of the day, we must control the controllables. I hope 2020 is your best year ever! Happy Together WHAT MAKES A GOOD RELATIONSHIP? WELL, I HAVE TO SAY THAT WHEN I THINK OF RELATIONSHIPS, I THINK OF THE RESEARCH OF JOHN GOTTMAN OF THE UNIVERSITY OF Washington. For over 40 years he observed couples’ interactions. His research determined what factors contributed to successful relationships and relationship failures.
The couples who had happy relationships were those who were attentive to one another. They were present and listened to each other. Gottman coined the term “bid.” His definition of this is “the fundamental unit of emotional communication.” The healthy couples constantly made and accepted bids to connect with one another. Bids take on many forms and can be physical, verbal or non-verbal, such as a gesture. They are attempts to connect without overtly saying, “I need you to give me your attention.” A person can acknowledge and respond to the bid, ignore it or miss it altogether or reject it overtly. So, if your partner asks a question, stop what you’re doing and respond. This shows they are important to you and you value them. Another response might be to ignore your partner and continue what you are doing. More obnoxious yet, you could angrily ask why he/she always bothers you while you’re doing something. The last two responses obviously would not cultivate a positive relationship. When we give our full, positive attention we create trust and

emotional connection. This leads to passion and a satisfying physical relationship. The consistency with which we do this does matter. Running hot and cold does not build trust. Think back to the things you did when dating. Think about all the information you know about your partner and what they like. Gottman calls this a “love map.” This is the basis for intimacy. Cultivate admiration and fondness for your partner. Speak to one another about things you admire and love about each other. Communicate with each other about the mundane things in life as well as the important things. Be sure to convey your partner’s importance to you in daily life. Kiss each other when leaving and reuniting. Healthy relationships are equal partnerships. Allow your partner to influence you in decisionmaking. Listen to each other’s points of view. Work to solve the circumstantial problems by talking about them. These are more superficial and less painful things to discuss and identify solutions. “Gridlock is a sign that you have dreams for your life that aren’t being addressed or respected by the other,” Dr. Gottman explains, “The goal is to ‘declaw’ the issue, to try to remove the hurt so the problem stops being a source of grain pain.” People still have individual hopes and dreams even when they are in a committed relationship. Being supported in your aspirations is an essential component of intimacy. Individual aspirations do not cease simply because one is in a relationship. Gottman explains that supporting one another’s dreams is an essential component of continued intimacy. This isn’t to say the other partner should withhold their opinion — a constructive dialogue is just as important as the goal itself. Make the relationship special with shared meaning. Create traditions, roles and meaningful experiences. This month think about these principles. Are you doing these things in your own relationship? If not, are you willing to begin? How can you begin to institute these actions? Talk with your partner about your relationship and committing to these changes. Y Dr. Jill Selbach is a licensed clinical psychologist. Legal Matters
Durable Power of Attorney EVERY ADULT FLORIDIAN SHOULD HAVE ONE
BY MARTIN ZEVIN, ATTORNEY
A DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY IS AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT DOCUMENT THAT EVERY ADULT IN FLORIDA SHOULD have. You appoint one or more agents to act on your behalf for virtually all legal and financial matters. The durable power of attorney is most often utilized if you become incapacitated; however, I have many clients who choose to allow someone trustworthy to act on their behalf just to make life less complicated. The durable power of attorney can be used for such diverse jobs as paying bills, signing contracts, buying and selling real estate, making investments, collecting monies owed and most other matters of a legal or financial nature. It does not cover any medical decisions, for which Florida law requires a designation of health care surrogate. It also does not cover “pulling the plug,” for which a written declaration, otherwise known as a living will, is required. If you have never done a durable power of attorney, it is extremely important to contact a lawyer to prepare the document as soon as possible. However, if you have a durable power of attorney and it is over five years old, it is strongly advisable to prepare a new one. A comprehensive law regarding the durable power of attorney became effective on October 1, 2011. The law does provide that any durable power of attorney executed under Florida law before October 1, 2011 will remain valid. However, in the last year, many financial institutions are refusing to honor old durable power of attorneys, particularly more than five years old. There can also be substantial delays involved if your agent attempts to use an old durable power of attorney, since they are being reviewed by the legal departments of the institutions prior to being allowed. The older your durable power of attorney is, the more likely it will undergo scrutiny and may be rejected. The new law requires that you specifically initial many different types of powers in order for your agent to be able to perform that duty. The banks, brokers, life insurance companies and other institutions are much more comfortable with this detailed durable

power of attorney, since it is clear what you want your agent to do. Under the new law, you can choose to name two people to act as co-agents. You then designate whether you allow them to act independently (only one signature necessary) or require that they act together (two signatures necessary). Your designated agents will also need to sign an acceptance agreeing to act. The new format of the durable power of attorney is much more extensive and complicated (ours is 26 pages); therefore, if you did a power of attorney years ago, expect to pay more for the new one. The durable power of attorney remains valid until you die. It is against the law for your agent to use it (to withdraw funds, sell real estate, etc.) after your death. At that point, your will or revocable living trust will take effect. It is also very important to have an updated living will and designation of health care surrogate which includes HIPAA compliant language. This article summarizes a few of the basic aspects of the durable power of attorney. It is recommended that you contact an attorney for review of any documents that you currently have. New Year’s Resolution Scorecard BY JIM TERLIZZI
IT IS BARELY FEBRUARY AND I EITHER HAVE COMPLETED OR FAILED MY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS. FOLLOWING ARE THOSE RESOLUTIONS AND RESULTS: GET IN SHAPE: I have found that whenever I feel like exercising all I have to do is lie down until the feeling goes away. LEARN TO COOK: This was easy. I now can make oatmeal in the microwave or prepare an egg in three different ways. Am well on my way to becoming an” iron chef.” Look out Bobby Flay. MEET NEW PEOPLE: This, too, was easy. Among the new people I have met are: the state trooper who issued a speeding ticket; the refrigerator repairman; the plumber; the electrician, and the doctor who gave me a prostate examination. LET GO OF GRUDGES: I no longer have a grudge against my neighbor who borrowed tools and never returned them. This was accomplished by pouring five pounds of sugar into his car’s gas tank. EXPRESS MYSELF ARTISTICALLY: Although writing this column qualifies, I thought I would find another outlet. Sculpting came to mind but I had to pass, since I am not allowed to have any sharp objects. BECOME MORE ROMANTIC: For her birthday, I gave my wife a new toaster — with a candle inside. REDUCE STRESS: This was accomplished by drinking more booze. REDUCE DRINKING: Resulted in more stress. Quickly canned this resolution. LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE: My granddaughters are teaching me computer speak. Why I have to open the windows for this is beyond me, but I have learned to say “reboot” and “control, alt, delete” with a Harvard accent.

REINVENT MYSELF: Normally, I subscribe to the advice to always be yourself. However, I was forced to reconsider when I saw these words on the message board of the “First Church of the Surf” in Los Angeles, “Be yourself. Unless you’re a jerk. Then be somebody else.” Unfortunately, all of the “somebody elses” I’d like to be are taken. SPEND LESS TIME ON SOCIAL MEDIA: I resolved this one because for me it’s a piece of cake. I don’t Tweet. I don’t use Facebook. All I had to do was stop answering my email. EAT HEALTHIER: I now put a piece of lettuce on my bacon cheeseburger and have a sprig of parsley with my French fries. Feeling better already. FACE MY FEARS: I suffer from triskaidekophobia — fear of the number 13, claustrophobia — fear of tight places, and coulrophobia — fear of clowns. On Friday the 13th in March I will hug a clown while standing in a small closet. Hopefully, the clown won’t get the wrong idea. DRESS WITH STYLE: This will happen automatically when my wardrobe comes back in style. ENJOY RETIREMENT: Not so easy. Think about it — when you’re retired you never get a day off. I will start enjoying it more as soon as I figure out how to know what day it is. STOP PROCRASTINATING: I’ll work on this one next month. Y

Preheat the oven to 375. Using a sharp knife, cut a slit in each chicken breast. Be careful not to cut through the chicken. You want to form a pocket for the filling and you don’t want any leaks. Season the inside pocket and the outside of the chicken generously with salt and pepper. Next spread one tablespoon of fig preserves inside each breast. Sprinkle the chopped sage inside each breast. Then place one piece of ham; two slices of brie; and a few spinach leaves in each pocket. Heat the olive oil in a skillet. Place the chicken in the pan and cook until golden brown. Flip the chicken and repeat on the other side. Remove the chicken to a baking dish. You don’t have to cook the chicken all the way through. It will finish cooking in the oven. In a large pot, heat the olive oil and sauté the garlic cloves just until they start to turn golden. Add the spinach and the salt and pepper. Stir the spinach with a wooden spoon and cook until wilted. Add the spinach to the baking dish with the chicken, nestling the chicken into the spinach. Bake uncovered for about 25 minutes until the chicken is cooked through. DO AHEAD: You can prepare the chicken up to the point where you are ready to bake it in the oven. Park the chicken and spinach in the refrigerator until you are ready to bake it. Mrs. Kossenfloffer is actually Susan Rosser. Try the Wine
Maligned Merlot
BY DAVID EHRENFRIED
HAS ANY VARIETY OF WINE BEEN MORE PUBLICLY MALIGNED THAN CALIFORNIA MERLOT? I’VE HEARD PEOPLE SAY THEY DON’T CARE FOR MERLOT AND YET don’t remember tasting it in years. And though merlot grapes are widely grown, shelf-space in wine stores devoted to American merlot in stores is small. Possibly the most devastating blow to Merlot’s brand was a scene in the 2004 dramatic comedy, “Sideways,” which won an Academy Award for best original screenplay. “Sideways’” basic storyline featured two former college roommates, Miles and Jack, who head to California wine country for some fun before Jack’s impending wedding. The movie’s most memorable line occurs outside a bar when Jack, an irrepressible and unrepentant womanizer played by Thomas Haden In the iconic scene from the dramatic comedy “Sideways,” Miles played by Paul Giamatti emphatically tells his friend Jack (Thomas Haden Church) his true feelings regarding merlot. Church, suggests they drink some Merlot. Miles, a wine (“Sideways” is available for rental on Amazon, iTunes and several other streaming services.) snob and sarcastic but sympathetic sad sack played by Paul Giamatti, snaps back, "If anyone orders merlot, I'm leaving. I am NOT drinking any (expletive) merlot!” a rare bottle of 1961 Chateau Cheval Blanc French Bordeaux. And “Sideways,” however, leaves a last laugh for those who what’s this prized wine made of? 43 percent merlot! appreciate merlot. Toward the movie’s end, Miles is shown alone in a fast food restaurant, paper cup in hand. Down and Merlot is not a Slouch out from putting up with Jack’s near catastrophic escapades The merlot grape is no slouch. It can make magnificently delicious and confronting his failures with women and other personal red wine. Well-made merlot wine is medium to full-bodied with plush, humiliations, Miles is drinking his most treasured wine possession: smooth texture and bold aromas and flavors of black fruit >>>

strong blackberry, strawberry and smoky aromas and bold blackberry, cocoa and spicy flavors. Smooth texture on a frame of prominent, mouth-coating tannins that should soften with bottle age.

<<< along with smoked oak. Mixed in should be other smell or taste combinations, such as cinnamon spice, cocoa and new leather. Because merlot grapes ripen quickly and have relatively thin skins, its wines when young tend to be less tannic and softer than recent vintage wines made mainly with cabernet sauvignon. Merlot also leans toward modest acidity. Consequently, many merlot wines are pleasant and easy to drink soon after bottling, even though some merlot wines can pack some power, and better ones can and do improve with age. Merlot’s natural home is France’s Bordeaux region, where it is more widely planted than cabernet sauvignon, the grape perhaps most closely associated with Bordeaux wine. But actually, merlot is the principle if not the only ingredient in most red wines from Bordeaux’s Right Bank. The Right Bank is on the eastern side of the Gironde River in Southwestern France. It includes the famous wine districts of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol (home to Chateaux Pétrus and Chateau Le Pin, both made entirely from merlot and among the world’s most expensive wines). Additionally, merlot is an important ingredient in making the most prestigious red Bordeaux wines from the Gironde’s Left Bank, including Chateau Laffite Rothschild, Chateau Margaux and many, many more. In Italy, too, some top wines are made with merlot. In Tuscany’s western districts merlot wines such as masseto rival top Tuscany wines made with sangiovese grapes, like Brunello di Montalcino, and top Piedmont wines, Barolo and Barbaresco, with Nebbiolo grapes. And what about California merlot? After great popularity in the 1990s, California merlot sales had already declined prior to “Sideways’” release. Viewed by many consumers as a pleasant fruity but non-serious wine, California merlot lost favor as tastes and interests continued to shift to cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir. I have to admit that California merlot was not a favorite of mine either. The inexpensive “house wine” versions served at bars, restaurants and receptions frequently impressed me as watered down and as characterless as they often were nameless. Like, who made that stuff? The better California merlot wines seemed hard to find and just didn’t interest me as much as some other wines. Right Bank Bordeaux wines, in particular, seemed to taste better and were more available. And yet vineyards in northern California and Washington State’s Columbia Valley have been growing high quality merlot grapes for a long time. As in Bordeaux, California and Washington merlot are vital ingredients in blending cabernet sauvignon wines. They soften cab’s sometimes harsh edges, reducing tannins and adding bright fruit, spice and other flavors. Merlot is equally important in making robust red wine blends, often referred to as meritage that have significant merlot content but not the 75 percent required to be labeled merlot under American wine industry standards. Either
way, merlot is integral to the tastes, smells and textures of many, if not most, of the popular bold, full-bodied red wines from California and Washington.
Savoring California and Washington Merlot
I hadn’t had many 75 percent-plus merlot wines in many years, so I thought it would be interesting to explore some modestly priced ($12-$30) 75 percent-plus merlot wines and see what I could learn and share with you. The results were quite good. I picked six wines made mainly by larger producers with good reputations. Most should be widely available, and nearly all shared the characteristics common to good merlot. With one exception, they were each more alike than different, but their differences were important, probably due to their vintage, grape blend and quality, and particular winemaking method. An exception was the merlot made by Januik (a Washington producer); it had more power and backbone than the others. I picked this price bracket because it’s popular with wine drinkers and the quality is usually truly better than wines that cost less. I’m familiar with some of the best California merlot wines, such as Duckhorn, La Jota and Pahlmeyer, which generally cost in the $50-$150 range, but they’re also mostly consistently and reliably excellent wines. What do we get when we spend much less than this — remembering that a bottle of wine you purchase in a bar or restaurant may be marked up two to three times what the same bottle costs in a market or wine store? What I liked best about the wines I tasted was how enjoyable they all were to drink. Guests liked them, too. I thought each, with a couple exceptions, combined prominent red and black fruit, smokiness, spice with smooth texture and agreeably mouth-coating tannins. One, as I mentioned, was bolder than the others. Two seemed to have an imbalance of acidity and tannins, exhibiting too much of one or of the other. But overall, I’d buy any of these or similar wines again. In fact, I’d recommend these wines over many similarly priced cabernet sauvignon wines that I think are sometimes not very cab-like, too tannic or simply not particularly enjoyable. The typical food recommendation for merlot is meat dishes. It’s delicious, too, with hard or soft cheeses, particularly ones that have some character. But I think the wines I tasted are much more flexible than this. Most of these wines were light enough to complement many kinds of poultry, especially roast duck, and vegetable dishes as well. Merlot also can work well with grilled, broiled or roasted salmon. We served some of these wines at a dinner party featuring poached salmon, and everyone enjoyed both together with only positive comments. And of course, these wines were also good to drink simply by themselves while watching TV, sipping over a conversation, reading, or whatever. So if you haven’t had a California or Washington Merlot in a while, try some soon and let us know what you think. Y FEBRUARY 2020 • pointpubs.com

OWNER AND OPERATOR OF ELITE FORCE MARTIAL ARTS
I watched the scene unfold in front of me as men, women from 10-year-old students to 70-year-old students, struggled past Craig to return to the dojo. His enthusiasm, his encouragement, his inspiration was clearly pushing this diverse group of local residents to overcome obstacles in order to achieve their goals. I have heard a few stories from locals who have earned their black belts and how Craig inspired them to reach deep within to stay focused and improve. Craig started Elite Force Martial Arts almost 17 years ago and has been teaching local residents with intensity and compassion ever since. Craig is married to Melissa and they have a daughter. Craig told me, “I’d like to think we have made an impact on the people of our community.”
I
t is hard to imagine Craig Haley has chubby or the victim of bullying. Just a few minutes watching him leading a room full of martial arts students at Elite Force introduces you to a man in peak physical condition with a calm, confident demeanor. Most people who encounter Craig learn in advance that he is a 7thdegree black belt... which is way beyond the average person’s comprehension of how difficult that is to achieve — but we all know not to pick a fight with Craig. “There’s no confidence like self-defense confidence,” and “If you can do this, you can do anything” are thoughts woven into every thing Craig says and does. Sure, he trains the occasional contest winner or future instructor but most students learn life skills more important than how to fight. I want to share one quick story about Craig. A few years ago I was stopped at an intersection in Lighthouse Point during a hard rainstorm. Craig and about 20 students were returning from a jog around the block. The rain was miserable and clearly unexpected; Florida can be that way on occasion. The students were visibly exhausted from the run and completely drenched, as was Craig.

She has been doing this for “over” 20 years. I did not press her for a better answer. “I love being a part of all the lives of these families,” she told me as I scanned the school website to read that her favorite quote is: “Every child is gifted, they just open their packages at different times.” The website also mentions that her favorite hobby is paddle boarding and if she could live as an animal she would be an otter; and interesting synergy with those two. “Parents are working more these days” according to Storm when asked about changes she has seen over the decades. “And technology has come full circle...

DIRECTOR OF THE TRINITY LEARNING CENTER AT TRINITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH we used to add technology to the classrooms but with so much technology at home, our school is where kids get away from it. Children need to be taught how to play and how to socialize.” Storm has lived with her husband Lance for 41 years, 33 of those years in Lighthouse Point. They have two daughters and six grandchildren. When asked what is her favorite part about her work, “It’s the “ah ha” moments when a child understands something for the first time. And the hugs.”
Suzanne Citere
OWNER AND DIRECTOR OF REALDANCE STUDIO
D
ancing and teaching dance has been a part of Suzanne Citere’s entire life. But her success as the owner of RealDance and her recognition as a Keeper has more to do with her teaching philosophy: “I demand personal excellence. I want my students to express their passion and have the courage to change the things they cannot accept.” “The vast majority of my students are girls, and most of them will never dance professionally,” she told me. But Suzanne’s lessons about practice, and the steady pursuit of one’s goals seem to stay with her students well into adulthood. Citere is originally from New York City where she studied dance with some of the finest instructors in the country. She moved to Lighthouse Point in 1996 and has been on the faculty at Dance Theatre of Parkland, Dance Theatre of Broward and Broward Dance Academy. Suzanne opened her school, RealDance, in 2003 in her community of Lighthouse Point. “I’ve always taught dance,” she told me in her studio near the Shopped of Beacon Light. “I taught dance in between dance gigs on cruise ships and shows.” 2020 marks her 39th year as a dance educator,
passing on the gift of dance to countless students, many of whom are performing and teaching dance themselves. Suzanne now specializes in pre-school and elementary dance, as her greatest joy is introducing the art to recreational dancers, teaching more than just steps and routines, but lessons that will carry over into all areas of their lives. Suzanne began teaching dance at North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek in 2008. She is a graduate member of Dance Masters of America and she graduated from Dance Educator’s of America’s teacher’s training school. Suzanne was a Director of Entertainment for Club Med Inc. for five years and has lived in the Caribbean, Israel, Switzerland and France, where she met her husband Pascal, and learned to speak fluent French. Certified to judge dance competitions by the National Dance Council of America, Suzanne also travels around the U.S. and Canada adjudicating dance competitions. In 2015 her student Connor Yockus was named a Presidential Scholar of the Arts by the national Young Arts foundation, and she had the honor of seeing him perform at the Kennedy Center for Michelle Obama. Suzanne resides in Lighthouse Point with her husband Pascal, her beautiful daughter Nina who is in her second year at the University of South Florida (Go Bulls!) and her 2 rescue dogs, Wally and Schuyler. SAFETY PALOOZA PHOTOS BY JAY PETKOV
In the spirit of safety first, the Lighthouse Christian School hosted a Safety Palooza in January. Families came out to celebrate our first responders. Kids had the chance to interact with members of the Broward Sheriff’s Office specialty units, marine patrol, K-9 dog unit, Lighthouse Point and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue and Police. There was also a team on site distributing fingerprint I.D. cards for children. There were motorcycles, fire trucks, humvees, jaws of life and even a robotic camera! While safety was the star of the show, kids also enjoyed a bounce house, dunk tank, a Florida fun train and carnival games and plenty of food and drink.

Elin & Andy TROUSDALE { LE BISTRO RESTAURANT }
How many years have you been a couple? 22 How many years have you worked together? 21 What do you each do to maintain your independence? In addition to all things food related, we each have separate hobbies and interests. Andy enjoys classic automobile restoration and gardening. Elin enjoys biking, Pilates, retail therapy and lunch with friends. How do you balance your business and leisure time together as a couple? Most of our leisure time together revolves around food and dining. It’s a passion we both have. When we are not working in the restaurant, we spend time dining out and cooking together at home. The business of all things food related is a constant in our lives as a couple and as a family, our son included.
Elin and Andy celebrated Elin’s birthday in the South of France
What is your advice for couples considering working together? Praise each other, know when to be silent and when speak up. Understand each others strong and weak points and create a balance. Verbal and non-verbal communication is very important. Create a non-verbal language with your partner. It’s like a dance: follow and lead, lead and follow. Practice and you’ll each know what to do without saying a word. How will you celebrate Valentine’s Day? We will be working hard serving others so they may have a special Valentine’s Day.

How many years have you been a couple? We’ve been together for 20 years. How many years have you worked together? 15 What do you each do to maintain your independence? It’s important to spend time every once in awhile doing the things you love on your own time. How do you balance your business and leisure time together as a couple? Balance is the key. We try not to talk about work during our free time. Instead we talk about the good things in life like family and our daughter. What is your advice for couples considering working together? Always have a separate work space and different responsibilities. Communication is also a key element for success. How will you celebrate Valentine’s Day? We celebrate everyday!

{ AVENGER FLIGHT GROUP COMMERCIAL AVIATION SIMULATION }
How many years have you been a couple? We’ve been together for 26 years. And we just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary on New Year’s Eve. How many years have you worked together? My husband, Eduardo, started the company seven years ago. I joined four years ago as it grew. Ed is the Senior Vice President of Operations -Technical and Infrastructure. I am the Director of Human Resources. He was one of the founding members. We operate in four U.S. locations and four in foreign countries.
What do you each do to maintain your independence? We naturally spend some time apart because Eduardo travels often for business. When I travel, Eduardo stays home with the kids. We also have some independent activities we each do. How do you balance your business and leisure time together as a couple? We both enjoy boating together, and when we do, we’re with friends and/or family so we don’t discuss business. Same for when we go out for dinner or are spending time with our three sons.
What is your advice for couples considering working together? If you’re going to be partners, make sure you share the same goals and be willing to compromise on how to reach them. In our case, I report to a different senior vice president, so we have different responsibilities How will you celebrate Valentine’s Day? We will most likely with a boat ride and a nice meal out.

a change in your restaurant rotation, take a trip back to the old country at Checkers Old Munchen. The restaurant’s exposed wood framing is reminiscent of the German half-timbered architectural style and the walls are lined with classic German beer steins. For a traditional German meal, try the wiener schnitzel — it’s divine — a lightly breaded veal cutlet sautéed in lemon butter and topped with homemade brown gravy. The spaetzle (German noodles) are a real homemade treat and not to be missed — throw a little of that brown gravy on them and they could be a meal unto themselves. The red cabbage is both classically sweet and sour and there are other side options too including potato dumplings, potato salad and even hot potato salad. As you look around, you can’t help but get the feeling that most of the patrons are returning
customers. And the next time we get a hankering for some schnitzel, we know where to go. Imbibe to your hearts content with their wide assortment of German beers. 2209 E. Atlantic Blvd., 954-785-7565 $$

One Bet, Four Courses A MEMORABLE and Good Friends DINNER AT CHANSON
The added bonus of the tasting menu is that it really brings the group together. It was fun “ooo-ing and ahhhh-ing” in tandem with my friends. My advice — don’t wait to lose a bet to have an experience like this. If you are looking to celebrate a special occasion or you just need a fun Saturday night out, Chanson is a good bet. All the items we tasted are on their regular menu. I will warn you that you might have to dip into your savings. Go forth and dine. —Susan Rosser
A
few months ago, my husband and I made a bet with two other couples. The losing couple had to treat the others to an elegant dinner out. We lost. But sometimes you win when you loose. My husband and I decided on Chanson. We met with Paulette Inostroza, the Chef at Chanson which is located at the Royal Blues Hotel on the beach in Deerfield. With her guidance, we developed a four course tasting menu for 10 people. (Yes, we were obligated to buy dinner for six, but we invited a few extras to make the evening a touch more festive.) The night of the dinner, everyone arrived early to enjoy cocktails at the oh-so-elegant bar. There are bars and then there are hotel bars. I’ve always been a fan of a hotel bar and the one at the Royal Blues, though small, is elegant and serves inventive and dare I say, labor intensive cocktails. This is a place for grown ups. (I recommend the spicy Susan named after yours truly.) After cocktails, we meandered into Chanson for dinner. The tasting menu was a hit. Everything was expertly prepared with a wonderful balance of flavors and textures and colors. Each dish was a feast not only for our palettes but our eyes. We started out with an arugula salad with goat cheese and walnuts served over a velvety beet puree. I had to restrain myself not to lick my plate. I think I had a dream about that beet puree. Next were the scallops served with crispy prosciutto and a drizzle of balsamic. The fourth course was beef tenderloin served with fried avocado over corn puree and poplano peppers. Last Resort
Solitude and Utah’s Desert Beauty at Amangiri BY RICHARD ROSSER
Modern luxury hotels are pushing the envelope in terms of locations and experiences. Disconnecting from the chaos of modern life and escaping to unique landscapes used to involve tents and 4x4 vehicles. Now, luxury hospitality operators like Aman Resorts are creating locations in desolate locations like Wadi Rum in Jordan and the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia With room rates at Amangiri running between $500 to $3,000 per night, this is a premium property with all that one expects in terms of service and amenities. Hot-air ballooning over the desert at sunrise? Helicopter or walking tours of the Grand Canyon? Boat tours of the vast Lake Powell? The isolation of the resort brings peace but its location is close to some of America’s great western landmarks and experiences. Seeking more solitude? The resort recently opened 10 luxury “tent pavilions” between 1,800 to 2,800 square feet with one and two-bedroom options. They hate the term “glamping” but this is a good example of it... and it looks amazing.
