Happy Birthday to Me USE YOUR BIRTHDAY TO SEE THE BETTER PARTS OF HUMANITY
BY SUSAN ROSSER
Last month, I committed to writing a year’s worth of columns on love in this space. At the time, it felt like a towering commitment. Yet, it is fitting my first essay on love should coincide with February and Valentine’s Day. My birthday also happens to be in February. So to kick off my love project, I will share why I love my birthday. In a nutshell, people are super friendly and kind to me on my birthday. So, some time ago, I figured, why not expand on that? For years and years, I never reminded anyone it was my birthday. Of course, my family and close friends remembered. But that’s it. So, birthday good wishes were restricted to a relatively limited group. I would swing into work and feel a twinge of disappointment when I was not blasted with birthday greetings. This lack of enthusiasm was not because I was some sort of miserable person with no friends; no one wished me a happy birthday simply because they did not know it was the anniversary of my birth. I can’t remember precisely when I changed course, but somewhere along the line, I rewrote my birthday playbook. Now I’ll tell anyone it’s my birthday — from the cashier at Publix to the receptionist at my dentist — anyone. Nearly everyone seems tickled to learn it’s my birthday, and naturally, they wish me well. Each interaction serves up a big slice of happiness which has far fewer calories than cake. At best, my evidence is anecdotal, but I assume most people don’t trot around town advertising their own birthdays. But aren’t we all entitled to one day out of 365 where we are indeed the center of attention, if not the universe? It is easy to sink into an abyss of negative thoughts and assume a zillion imbecilic people are out there just waiting to ruin your day. We read stories of atrocious behavior on airplanes and restaurants and consequently believe the world is full of sourpusses.

But on my birthday, each “happy birthday” uttered brightens my day and goes a long way towards rejuvenating my sense of community and faith in humanity. If you give people the chance to wish you well, they take it. And I enjoy my birthday so much that I have extended my celebration to the entire month. Thankfully I was born in February, so my indulgence is limited to 28 days. And truth be told, I don’t go around telling total strangers that I am in the midst of my birth month for an entire month. Generally speaking, I use my birth month to get my family to do things they might otherwise not be inclined to do. I am mainly talking about laundry and dishes here. I started this whole project of columns of love because I wanted to focus on positive things. Thanks in part to my awful habit of doom scrolling when I can’t sleep, I woke up today feeling pretty disheartened, but then I began work on this column and instantly felt more optimistic. Sometimes just thinking about love is all you need. Y

Best Foods for Optimal Dental Health
BY DR. GABRIELA ESPINOZA You’ve heard dentists go on and on about flossing and brushing to control bacteria and plaque. Checkups, cleanings, flossing and brushing are the crucial for dental health, but here are the foods to eat for optimal dental health. You’re likely aware of the foods and drinks to stay away from if you’re trying to keep your pearly whites looking good. Red wine and other acids can chip away at tooth enamel, sweets can lead to decay, and starchy foods can linger in your mouth. But there are foods that promote good oral health. Incorporating the right foods into your diet can strengthen teeth and keep them in tip-top shape. APPLES - It turns out that eating an apple a day doesn’t just keep the doctor away — it can ward off the dentist, too. Apples are high in water, which stimulates saliva production and rids your mouth of bacteria and stray food particles that have overstayed their welcome. The fiber also stimulates the gums and acts as a mild astringent for your teeth, gently brightening them. Enjoy the fruit unpeeled, as many of its oral benefits are in the skin. DAIRY - Calcium isn’t only good for
your bones — your teeth love it too. A lack of calcium can lead to tooth decay, as this mineral helps your teeth maintain structure. Getting enough calcium is a double whammy — not only will it strengthen teeth, but it also contributes to the remineralization process. It’s essential to eat the right dairy products. Yogurt and kefir are also two calcium-rich dairy options that contribute to overall oral health. And as an immune-boosting bonus, the probiotics found in them increase the good bacteria throughout your body — including the ones that fight the bad, cavity-causing bacteria. COCONUT - Practiced for centuries, coconut oil pulling is an oral detoxification procedure that’s been gaining traction. It works by removing toxins from your mouth and creating a clean, antiseptic oral environment that prevents cavities and disease. Simply swish a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for 20 minutes. Due to its natural antifungal and antiviral properties, coconut is incredibly effective at remedying tooth decay, killing bad breath, whitening teeth, and healing bleeding gums. LEAFY GREENS - Is there anything leafy greens can’t fix? Because they’re high in vitamins and minerals and low in
calories, leafy greens are a fool-proof way to keep teeth healthy. The antioxidants and vitamins found in these powerful veggies combat cavities and serve as a sneaky calcium source to keep teeth strong. NUTS - If you want a healthy mouth, it’s time to go nuts. Almonds, cashews, walnuts, take your pick — they’re all fantastic options. Nuts are loaded with various vitamins and minerals that benefit your teeth, and the chewing that’s needed to break them down for digestion increases saliva production, keeping your mouth nice and clean. The omega-3 fatty acids found in nuts strengthen teeth and support healthy gum tissue. Dr. Gabriela Espinoza is an orthodontic and cosmetic dentist at PARK PLAZA DENTAL. Lighthouse Point Yacht Club Redevelopment Plans Move Into Final Approval Stage The Lighthouse Point Yacht Club redevelopment project is moving closer to the conclusion of an approval process that began three years ago. Five final items will be coming to the City Commission for approval this month. Terry Paterson, owner and developer of the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club, is proposing to build 21 luxury townhomes and one single-family home on a portion of the yacht club property that is currently used for tennis courts and parking. The proceeds from the sale of the residential units would be used to subsidize a new yacht club clubhouse, a new tennis center and a renovated children’s activity center. The Planning and Zoning Board completed its review of the development agreement at its Dec. 7, 2021, meeting. The City Commission, at its Jan. 11 meeting, approved on first reading the development agreement and an ordinance to rezone the yacht club property, located at 2701 NE 42nd Street, from a business district to a new Yacht Club-Mixed Use (YC-MU) zoning district, which included review of the proposed final site plan. The development agreement and rezoning ordinance are slated to come back to the City Commission on Feb. 8 for a second reading, along with the second readings

of a land use map amendment to permit residential uses on the property; a text amendment to the city’s Comprehensive Plan to clarify the permitted uses in the land use category assigned to the property; and an ordinance creating the Yacht Club-Mixed Use (YC-MU) zoning district. The site plan was approved by the Planning and Zoning Board last October, subject to eleven conditions. The City Commission made determinations on those conditions during its review of the site plan on Jan. 11. One of those conditions was that the City Commission review whether the three townhome buildings

proposed for the west side of the project site could have a larger separation between them to avoid a “wall effect” and to “create a better aesthetic view” for the residents who live across the canal. There’s a separation of 24 feet between the two townhome buildings proposed for the east side. However, on the west side, there is only 16 feet between the three townhome buildings. Spacing the townhome buildings on the west side further apart would require shifting two of the buildings to the south, which would need to be accommodated in the final design. “This is the heavy topic of this evening,” said Commission >>>

Lighthouse Point Yacht Club Redevelopment Plans Move Into Final Approval Stage CONTINUED
<<< President Kyle Van Buskirk.
Commission Vice President Sandy Johnson said she “feels strongly” that 16 feet between the buildings is enough. Commissioner Earl Maucker said he would like to see 24 feet, but it wasn’t “a dealbreaker” for him. “I’ve struggled over this,” said Commissioner Jason Joffe, who thinks “less density is better.” Commissioner Mike Long said he was “mixed on this,” and expressed concern about the buildings on the west side looking like “one big wall.” The Commission voted 4:1 to keep the 16-foot building separation on the west side, with Joffe voting ‘no.’ Another condition the Planning and Zoning Board placed on its approval of site plan was that the City hire a traffic consultant to review the safety and efficacy of the proposed front entry of the yacht club, which includes booms that would open and close automatically for each car entering the site, serving as a traffic calming device. The traffic consultant hired by the City reached the conclusion that the booms of the front entry, referred to as the “entry feature,” will not create a safety issue if proper stacking is provided. The City Commission decided to add as a condition of its approval of the site plan a provision that if the City or developer determine the booms aren’t functioning as intended, the issue can be “reopened,” with the possibility of the booms being removed. As part of its site plan discussion, the Commission confirmed that the developer will install an exterior wall and landscaping along NE

42nd Street early in the first phase of the project to provide buffering from noise and construction debris, and that the City and Paterson will develop a permanent traffic calming
plan for NE 27th Terrace. The Commission’s review of the development agreement included discussion of the project’s phasing plan and the duration of construction, which was set at 26 months for everything except the last five townhome units, plus a 14-month period to complete those units, making the maximum period 40 months. The Commission would be able to grant a oneyear extension if there were an unforeseen circumstance. After spending approximately two-and-a-half hours on the rezoning ordinance and site plan
review, the Commission then spent almost two hours on the development agreement. The rezoning ordinance/site plan was approved with a 4:1 vote,

with Joffe casting the ‘no’ vote. The development agreement was approved with a 5:0 vote. The City Commission meeting on Feb. 8 will start at 5:30pm, one hour earlier than usual, to allow more time to get through all the yacht club-related agenda items. Y

The City’s Bond Projects Continue to Make Progress Despite Setbacks Construction of the city’s new fire station on Sample Road and new community center at Dan Witt Park is moving along, despite delays in receiving building materials. In December, William Gallo, of Gallo Herbert Architects, who was hired as the City’s representative to oversee the bond projects, told the City Commission that a series of supply chain issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic had slowed the projects down, the most significant of which was a lack of roof insulation. Gallo said that roof insulation for the fire station arrived late, and without it, no work could be done inside the building for a month. “The job literally came to a halt except for stucco,” said Gallo. All of the roof insulation has now been delivered and installed. There was difficulty getting the sealant layer for the roof, so tarps were installed on the roof in order to keep the inside of the building dry and allow for the interior work, which is in progress. Roof insulation for the community center arrived sooner than the roof insulation for the fire station, and has been installed, as well as the roof’s tar paper sealant layer, which keeps the inside of the building dry. Interior work on the community center is currently underway. The final metal roof covering has not been put in place yet. Gallo noted that the community center also experienced an approximately one-month delay at the start of the job because of an issue with a gumbo limbo tree. The tree was scheduled to be removed, but the County said it had to be relocated, which involved a special

root pruning process. The original projected completion date for the community center and fire station was the end of December 2021 or early January 2022. In December 2021, the revised estimated completion date for the community center was March 2022. The fire station was lagging behind that, so in order to try to catch up on the schedule, the subcontractors have been working on most weekends. Due to continued supply chain issues, the City is waiting to get an updated estimated completion date from the contractor, said Lighthouse Point Mayor Glenn Troast. Progress is being made on the
city’s three other bond projects. The foundation footings for the new public works administration building have been completed and site work is in progress. The renovation of an existing public works building to be used for fleet maintenance is underway, with interior work about half-way complete. For the proposed first floor expansion of the library, a survey of the site was carried out last month, and design plans will follow. Construction of the library

project will be put out to bid. The agreement the City has with the construction manager of the bond projects – Kaufman Lynn Construction – stipulates that change orders exceeding the guaranteed maximum price of a project by $20,000 or more must be approved by the City Commission. In December, the City Commission authorized an additional $100,000 for change orders for the new Community Center, bringing the total authorization to $120,000. The increased amount covers change orders of approximately $50,000 that were awaiting approval, plus any further change orders that may arise, allowing the project to move forward without having to come back to the City Commission for approval. Gallo said the change orders are due to supply chain issues, unforeseen conditions that were encountered, and valueadd items. Several of the change orders were for modifications in work requested by the police chief, city engineer and the fire inspector. The guaranteed maximum price the City will pay for the community center is $2,527,189. The guaranteed maximum price the City will pay for the fire station is $7,620,377. Troast noted the City has not yet spent any of the contingency from the bond funds. Gallo said, overall, the bond projects are “in fine shape.” Regarding the cost, he said “you’ll be at or under where you want to be.” Y

HONORING OUR FIRST RESPONDERS
Police Officer of the Year Officer Cole Hansen In keeping with its annual tradition, the City honored two of its first responders for their exceptional work during the past year. Officer Cole Hansen was recognized as Police Officer of the Year by Lighthouse Point Police Chief Ross Licata for his accomplishments in 2021, which included important lifesaving actions and the prevention and resolution of criminal activity in Lighthouse Point through his “high degree of initiative, keen observations and quality investigative techniques.” “It’s a great honor,” said Hansen. “I had a good year, so it feels good to be recognized and awarded for that.” Hansen was hired by the Lighthouse Point Police Department in March 2020. Prior to that, he worked as an officer with the Brevard Police Department in Brevard, North Carolina, for almost three years, which was his first police job. “He is an enthusiastic police officer with an excellent work ethic, outstanding customer service skills and a passion for police work,” said Licata. Highlights of the work that earned Hansen distinction include his handling of a volatile domestic situation involving a local family. A husband and wife were having a heated argument because one of them felt the other wasn’t helping enough with their newborn child. The family credited Hansen’s calming demeanor and interpersonal skills with diffusing the situation and helping them to work through their problems. In another instance, Hansen was dispatched to McDonald’s regarding

a 911 hang-up call. Upon his arrival, Hansen saw an adult male lying on the floor suffering from an unknown medical condition. Hansen immediately placed the man in a recovery position and assessed his vital signs (weak pulse, shallow agonal breathing, purple lips and pin-point pupils). His training and experience suggested the man was suffering from an opioid overdose. Hansen administered Narcan, and within a short period of time the man started regaining consciousness and was subsequently transported to Broward Health North, where he received further medical care and recovered. Hansen said the case he is most proud of involved an in-progress auto burglary he witnessed in the driveway of a home in the 2800 block of NE 44th Street. The subject was inside a resident’s vehicle, removing personal property. When the subject saw Hansen, he immediately fled on foot and Hansen pursued. Hansen caught the subject blocks away, and struggled to detain him as he violently resisted arrest. With the help of a fellow officer, the subject was taken into custody. It was later learned the arrestee had previously entered the victim’s home through an open garage door and removed personal belongings from the kitchen and living room — including the victim’s key fob, cash and credit cards — while the victim slept. It was also discovered that the subject was in possession of stolen property, including a sizeable
amount of cash that had been taken from two burglarized vehicles belonging to other victims who lived on NE 45th Street. The 21-yearold offender had an extensive prior criminal record and was subsequently arrested and charged with multiple counts of auto burglary, residential burglary and auto theft. Hansen was born and raised in Coral Springs. He attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, where he was on the lacrosse team all four years. He was recruited to play lacrosse at Brevard College in North Carolina, where he earned a major in criminal justice and a minor in psychology. In his senior year, he completed a six-month program at the Blue Ridge Community College Police Academy in Flat Rock, North Carolina. Hansen said he wanted to become a police officer because, in addition to helping others, he likes the camaraderie and team atmosphere, which he always had playing lacrosse. In his free time, Hansen, who now lives in Tamarac, enjoys spending time with family, going to Florida Panthers hockey games and playing golf. Hansen likes working as a police officer in Lighthouse Point because “the community is very welcoming.” “Lighthouse Point residents are unwavering in their support for their law enforcement officers,” he said. HONORING OUR FIRST RESPONDERS
Firefighter of the Year Kevin Padden The honor of being named the Lighthouse Point Firefighter of the Year was awarded to Firefighter/ Paramedic Kevin Padden. “Firefighter Padden is one of our brightest stars and strives for customer service second to none,” said Lighthouse Point Fire Chief Jeff Moral. “We are very proud of his achievements and continued efforts to make Lighthouse Point a safer place for residents and visitors.” “It’s great to be recognized,” said Padden, “but I think there are many people in the department that contribute greatly and are worthy.” Padden was hired by the Lighthouse Point Fire Department in 2018. Before that, he was a firefighter with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue in Tampa (2013-2018), Monroe County Fire Rescue in the Florida Keys (2012-2013), and the Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Fire Department (2005-2012). Padden was recognized for the knowledge and experience he demonstrates when responding to medical and fire calls, “while creating a space where he lets people flourish, but is always there with a helping hand.” In addition to being “a natural leader,” Padden was credited for volunteering his time willingly in order to create a better environment for all of his fellow firefighters. Padden assisted with the yearly oil changes on all the apparatuses — the ladder truck, fire engine and two rescue vehicles — and with the routine cleaning and troubleshooting of the various small engines (“jaws of life” extrication equipment, power saws, hydraulic

pumps and generators). Padden was acknowledged for bringing ideas and solutions to the rescue supervisors of each shift, in order to create an efficient system that ultimately helps the residents and business owners of Lighthouse Point. Padden also assisted with the delivery of new protocols and mentored a new firefighter/ paramedic. Padden was born in Los Angeles and moved to Lauderdale-By-The-Sea with his parents when he was three. Upon their arrival, his father joined the Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Fire Department as a firefighter, a position he retired from several years ago, although he’s still a provider for the EMS agency that serves Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. Padden said he got his passion for the fire service from “growing up” in the fire house and being involved in the community. “The only thing I actually really wanted to be was a firefighter,” said Padden. While attending Pompano Beach High School, he was in the “Fire Explorer” on-the-job training program with the Lauderdale-ByThe-Sea Fire Department. Just before his senior year, he did his emergency medical technician (EMT) training at the Florida Medical Training Institute in Coconut Creek. He later graduated from the Broward Fire Academy, and got his paramedic certification from Hillsborough Community College while working with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.
Padden is also a state certified fire instructor and certified first-level (supervisory) fire officer. When Padden saw that the Lighthouse Point Fire Department was hiring, he “jumped on the opportunity.” He liked the idea of working in Lighthouse Point because it’s a place where “you develop a relationship with everybody” — with the residents, business owners and city employees who work in other departments. Padden currently resides in Pompano Beach. When he isn’t working, he enjoys going out on his boat and offshore fishing, as well as playing guitar and bass (especially rock and reggae). Padden finds his job fulfilling because “there’s nothing better than knowing you had a positive impact on somebody in whatever capacity that may be – whether it’s saving someone in cardiac arrest, helping someone get into bed or someone who’s locked out of their vehicle. Any of those little things can be rewarding as well.” Y

Personal Development
Always Make Adjustments BY CRAIG HALEY 2022 REPRESENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO BOUNCE BACK FROM THE PREVIOUS TWO YEARS FILLED WITH OBSTACLES, CHALLENGES, AND UNFORESEEN EVENTS. EVERYONE WANTS THIS YEAR TO BE THEIR BEST YEAR SO FAR. Certainly, step one is to have clear goals and intentions. After that, you must take action to make those goals come to fruition. But what about what happens when your plan does not work out 100% of the time? Do you throw in the towel and give up? Of course not!
The next step is to evaluate your habits and routines to see if they are helping you or hurting you. It’s time to wake up and realize that some habits you indulge could be compounding your life into a repeated disaster. The slightest adjustments to your daily routines can dramatically alter the outcomes in your life. Again, I’m not talking about quantum leaps of change or a complete overhaul of your personality, character and life. We are talking about super small, seemingly inconsequential adjustments that can and will revolutionize everything. The best illustration I can give to emphasize the power of minor

adjustments is that of a plane traveling from Los Angeles to New York City. If the plane’s nose is pointed only one percent off course — almost an invisible adjustment when the plane is sitting on the tarmac in Los Angeles— it will ultimately end up about 150 miles off course, arriving either in Albany, New York or in Dover, Delaware. Such is the case for your habits. A single poor habit, which doesn’t look like much at the moment, can ultimately lead you miles off course from the direction of your goals and the life you desire. Take a few minutes and review all your habits. Are some habits not causing you any challenges now, but they could be down the road? Eliminating or changing certain habits can be tricky. One option could be to replace the habit with a better one. For example, swap out soda for sparkling water. Another option would be to avoid the temptation altogether. If you want to eat better, get all the junk food out of the house, so it will not tempt you. If you do not want to drink alcohol, don’t keep it in the house at all. When the bad habit is easily accessible, your willpower will be tested. Don’t put yourself in that position! The award-winning talk show host, Montel Williams had to make serious changes to his diet when he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Instead of getting angry about the foods he could no longer eat, such as steak and mashed potatoes, he got excited about what he added to his diet. He decided to focus on what he could eat, and he got excited about the delicious salmon and flavorful vegetables he enjoyed. He could get excited about that because he genuinely liked those foods. Making small adjustments in your habits and mindset can be a huge game-changer and get you on the fast track to success! Let’s make 2022 our best year ever! Home Equity and Probate
IF YOU HAVE EQUITY IN YOUR HOME, DO A TRUST TO AVOID PROBATE
BY MARTIN ZEVIN, ATTORNEY
IN 2012, I WROTE AN ARTICLE RECOMMENDING AGAINST DOING A REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST IF YOU WERE “UNDERWATER” WITH YOUR MORTGAGE. MANY OF MY clients had bought or refinanced from 2004 to 2006 at the top of the market. However, the last nine years have seen significant increases in property values, particularly in 2021. This increase has resulted in many homeowners now having positive equity. If prices continue to rise, many more homeowners will have positive equity. In the article I wrote in 2012, I advised clients to live long enough to see their properties increase in value to exceed the mortgage amount; at that time, they could come back to me to discuss a revocable living trust. That time is now here. Without equity in your home, it does not make sense to pay an attorney the fee and costs involved in creating a trust, since you would be burdening your heirs with a property that has a negative equity. However, once that equity turns positive, you are doing your heirs a favor by eliminating the time and money involved in going through probate. Probate can take a year and cost thousands of dollars in fees and costs. Remember also that the trust is called a “revocable living trust.” This means that, as long as you are alive, the trust remains with you. You can always

sell your home and buy a new home as trustee of your trust. You do not need to change the trust unless you want to change the beneficiaries for the new property. You can also buy additional properties, in Florida or out of state, as trustee of your trust. If you are a Florida resident and own a home out of state, you will be able to transfer that property to your trust and avoid probate there as well. Therefore, if you now have equity in your home, you should seriously consider creating a trust. Transferring your home to the trust will not change your homestead or your real estate taxes. In addition, regardless of the equity in your home, it is extremely important to have current advance care directives to protect you if you are incapacitated. These include the durable power of attorney (which must specifically include the address of your property) as well as the designation of health care surrogate and living will. New Florida laws could mean that your current documents need to be revised. Y Martin Zevin is available to discuss wills, trusts, estates, probate and is available for free consultation regarding personal injury claims or car insurance coverage. What Is Wealth Planning, Really? AS YOU’RE PROBABLY AWARE, IT CAN BE ALL TOO EASY TO FOCUS ON JUST ONE ASPECT OF YOUR FINANCIAL LIFE — AND IN DOING SO, MISS OPPORTUNITIES AS WELL AS INCUR UNNECESSARY RISK. That’s where wealth planning comes in. Wealth planning is a term you’ve likely heard before. But what does it actually entail? Wealth planning is all about examining your entire financial picture — not simply investments, although they’re included, but also your advanced needs. These might include wealth protection, tax mitigation, wealth transfer (also known as estate planning) and charitable giving. Here’s a look at some key aspects of wealth planning and why they can be crucial to affluent families looking to make smart financial decisions. The basics of wealth planning include legal strategies and financial products that are readily recognized and generally appropriate for most wealthy families. Here are three examples: 1. TRUSTS — In many ways, trusts are cornerstone strategies for many successful individuals and families. A trust is nothing more than a means of transferring property using a third party — the trust. Specifically, a trust lets you transfer title of your assets to trustees for the benefit of the people you want to take care of (your designated beneficiaries). The trustee will carry out your wishes on behalf of your beneficiaries. Trusts can be flexible wealth planning tools. You can use them in all sorts of ways to transfer your wealth and determine how it is to be deployed. Trusts also can prove to be very useful in shielding your assets from plaintiffs and creditors. Depending on the kind of trust, there are different tax consequences. For example, a trust could enable you to sell appreciated assets without paying any taxes on the increase in the value of those assets from the time you acquired them. 2. PARTNERSHIPS — As with trusts, there are various types of partnerships. They can determine how the partners address ownership issues, and they have varying tax benefits. For example,
BY GREGORY EDWARDS
within the business world, disharmony among family members or unrelated business partners can mean a higher tax bill if the owners are forced to divide assets among the partnership’s members. Through the use of specific partnership structures, business owners can divide their companies’ assets in ways that can eliminate taxes. 3. LIFE INSURANCE — Death and taxes are certainties for everyone. The very wealthy, for instance, face hefty taxes on their estates when they pass away. And while there are ways to mitigate estate taxes through wealth planning, most are underutilized. One
area that has captured the interest of the affluent is the use of life insurance policies to help pay estate taxes. While life insurance can cover estate tax liabilities, this does not mean the estate taxes will not still need to be paid. Relationships 101 BY DR. JILL SELBACH
RELATIONSHIPS ARE TRICKY. WE LEARN TO NAVIGATE THEM BETTER AS TIME GOES ON, LEARNING FROM EACH RELATIONSHIP. SOME OF US KNOW ABOUT HEALTHY relationships by watching people who are in good relationships. Others are not as fortunate to have role models and don’t know what constitutes a healthy relationship. Relationships take work like anything meaningful in life. So what are the makings of a good relationship? COMMITMENT: When someone puts time, effort and energy into a relationship, it shows commitment. Show your partner they are a priority with your actions, not just your words. Take an interest in by really seeing the world through their perspective.

LOVE AND AFFECTION: Everyone has ideas about what makes them feel loved. It is essential to find out what your partner’s love language is. It may be very different from yours. Learn what makes them feel loved. Is it spending quality time, acts of kindness, gifts, words of affirmation or physical affection? RESPECT: Respect your partner warts and all. Over time the best foot that was put forward starts to take a step back. We become aware of the other person’s weaknesses. In a healthy relationship, the individuals accept these shortcomings and respect their partner. SHARED ACTIVITIES AND FRIENDSHIP: Look for experiences that draw you together. <<< haul. Sex is great but may not be the main event in your relationship as you grow older. COMMUNICATION: Mind reading is not a thing. So, unless your partner is clairvoyant, you must tell them what you need. It isn’t fair to say your partner neglects your needs unless you have made them known verbally. Be sure to discuss financial, career and personal goals. HEALTHY CONFLICT RESOLUTION: It is essential to determine how communications break down during a conflict. Show appreciation for your partner and be willing to say, “I’m sorry,” and admit when you are wrong. Use “I” statements when expressing yourself in conflictual situations. For example, “I feel upset when you don’t make time for me .” Be sure to say, “I love you.”
Research shows that even couples who experience adverse events can overcome these with more positive interactions to outweigh the negative. HONEST MISTAKES: It is vital to see negatives in a relationship as honest mistakes and not as purposefully antagonistic. View your partner as having good character traits. Otherwise, this is not the person for you. Strive to have more positive interactions. Research shows that even couples who experience adverse events can overcome these with more positive interactions to outweigh the negative. PROBLEM SOLVING, REPAIR AND GROWTH: A couple who identifies problems, and devises a problem-solving strategy has a greater chance of longevity and happiness. Letting issues sit and fester allows resentment to build, which is hard to get past as time goes on. WILLINGNESS TO WORK: The most successful relationship partners recognize a relationship is dynamic and takes work. Different life stages, children, extended family, careers and finances alter the dynamic of a relationship. Meeting your partner’s needs is very important, and needs change over time. It is imperative to discuss needs regularly. Openness to work on personal growth and growth as a couple is a significant protective factor in a relationship. This process builds trust. These are some of the key components to a happy, long-standing and fulfilling relationship. It is always important to seek professional guidance if these things are difficult to achieve on your own. Fish Tales
The Deep Dropping Secret BY JOHN PIOTROWSKI
THE FAMILY IS IN TOWN, AND THE BOAT WAS JUST SERVICED! IT SEEMS LIKE THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO GO FISHING. IT’S FEBRUARY — WHAT SHOULD WE FISH FOR? SHOULD WE troll for wahoo early? Or should we fill up with live baits and fly kites for sailfish? What do you do when you get one of those days between fronts when the wind is calm, and the pelagics seem to have gone on vacation? What is the backup plan? How do you give yourself the best chance to come home with a happy crew and fish in the box?
You must know the secret. You have to know the ocean places not overfished by every boat. Be ready and rigged to deep drop. Some say it’s advantageous to have the gulf stream close

because it brings traveling billfish, tuna, swordfish, wahoo, dolphin, and others close to our shore. But those fish tend to hang out in the top half of the water column. What about the bottom half of the water column? The deep, dark abyss. What if I told you that one of the most reliable fishing grounds to catch fish on every trip was hiding deep below the surface and out of reach of the everyday strategies. Well it is! Fishers often joke that a good day is a single wahoo, blackfin tunas or dolphin. If the fishing is so good here, why can’t the average joe fill the box more often? The secret is that while everyone is driving all over the surface, trying to find the one fish left, millions of fish are on the bottom, wondering why nobody wants to feed them. In depth ranges of 250’ to 900,’ there are vermillion snapper, rosies, snowies, greys and goldens, silkies and blacks. Let’s not even talk about the number of fish off the Bahamian banks. Heck, you’re not fishing in the Bahamas unless you bring the deep drop gear to bow to the Queen and her Yellow-eyed guardians. Some go fishing with 18 – 24 rods. I guess a rod for every rig? Maybe it’s an unsaid competition to see who can take more rods fishing? It always makes me laugh. How much does it cost to catch a pound of fish for dinner in Broward County? I need a bigger calculator to determine that inflation rate. Why go fishing with 24 rods, four tackle boxes, 72 rigs, baits with more treatments on them than my dock, and enough gold on the reels to challenge fort knox? When you can take one rod, a few big weights, five hooks on one rig and a box of squid and outfish everyone? The technology of bottom machines has gotten to a level that is simply unfair to the fish. A fellow I know has deep water fishing so well dialed in that he marks the fish 1500’ down, determines their species, names them, asks them what they would like to eat today, and then feeds them exactly what they want. If you want to learn more about this secret, then you need to check out the Lighthouse Point Saltwater Sportsman’s Association or the Offshore Anglers of Pompano Beach. Good Luck! Tidbits & Trivia
Participation Trophies in Education BY JAMES TERLIZZI
IN CALIFORNIA (WHERE ELSE?), SCHOOLS NO LONGER WILL ISSUE “D” OR “F” GRADES TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. THIS APPROACH HAS BEEN DUBBED “COMPETENCYBASED learning” and was invoked to counter floundering test scores during the pandemic. Pupils who flunk exams or fail to complete their homework will be offered extensions or the chance to retake the test. What’s next? I’m guessing, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the following: Students who fail tests or do not complete the work will be offered extensions. They will have up to the age of 60 to make good. They will get diplomas, but these will be stamped “pending.” The University of California, which already has agreed to stop using SAT or ACT scores for admission, will accept “pending” diplomas. However, they will not accept late payment of tuition. There will be no more valedictorians or salutatorians. Every student will make a six-minute graduation speech. In a class of 200, this will take 20 hours. Graduation ceremonies will last for a week. Not to be outdone, in his last act as mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio proposed an end to the public school system’s Gifted and Talented Program. He cited how well he has done as holder of a “pending” diploma. We already offer participation trophies in sports, so where will this insidious idea go next? How about breathalyzer tests? If you are stopped on suspicion of drunk driving and fail the test, the police officer will have to give

you an extension. “Come back in a week and I’ll test you again.” Things will get interesting when these “pending people” join the workforce. Just picture them on the job: Air Traffic Controller: “ Hello pilots. They just handed me a bunch of tiles. Definitely not for Mahjong. Try not to bump into each other while I figure this out.” Surgeon: “I know how to take out the appendix, but I got an ‘incomplete’ on the part where you close up the patient.” Auto Mechanic: “The problem is either the starter, the alternator or the battery. Can you leave the car until I complete the rest of the course?” Chef: “ I can make Beef ‘Well’, ‘Ratatou’ and, for dessert, Chocolate ‘Souff’.” Animal Trainer: “ I taught my dog to sit. Now I’m working on how to make him get up.’” Nutritionist: “You need to take Vitamins A, B, C and D. I’ll have some more letters for you next month.” By now, you get the picture. However, there is one occupation where having blanks in your education doesn’t matter — Internal Revenue Service agent. You only have to memorize two sentences: “How much money did you earn last year?” “Send it in.” Y

Double-ChocolateCherry-Pistachio Cookies Makes about 12 pretty large cookies
INGREDIENTS
6 ounces semi-sweet or bittersweet (60-percent) chocolate, chopped 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 2/3 cup sugar 2 eggs, at room temperature 2 tablespoons water 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Flaky sea salt (optional)
ADD-INS
1/2 cup pistachios, roughly chopped 1/2 cup dried cherries, roughly chopped 2 ounces semi-sweet or milk chocolate, chopped
PREPARATION
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Place the racks in the bottom and top third of the oven. Line 2 sheetpans with parchment paper and set aside. Combine the butter and the semi-sweet chocolate in a heat-proof bowl. Place the bowl over a pot of simmering water on the stove. Stir until the butter and chocolate have melted. Stir to combine. Remove from the heat and let cool. (You can also do this in the microwave — just be careful not to overdo it. Use 15- or 30-second intervals.) In a medium bowl, mix the flour and cocoa powder. Whisk to combine. Whisk the eggs, sugar, water and vanilla. Add the salt and baking powder and whisk to combine. Add the flour and cocoa mixture and stir until just combined. Fold in the cooled melted chocolate. Stir in the pistachios, cherries and chopped chocolate. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for 10-20 minutes. Refrigerating the dough will firm it up a bit and make it easier to scoop. Using a 1/4 cup cookie scoop or measuring cup, place 6 mounds of batter on each baking sheet. Bake the cookies for 18 minutes. Halfway through baking, rotate the racks top to bottom and front to back. When the cookies are done, they should look a little puffy and have small cracks on top. Remove from the oven, sprinkle with flaky sea salt if using and let cool on the cookie sheets. They will deflate a little. Y The chocolate cookie dough recipe is based on a cookie by Giada DiLaurentis. I’ve made a lot of chocolate cookies in my day — this one is for serious chocolate lovers. Happy baking!

Try the Wine
Delicious and Affordable Red Wines from France’s Land of Yes BY DAVID EHRENFRIED
LET’S SEE IF I CAN SURPRISE YOU. WHICH OF THE WORLD’S WINE REGIONS DO YOU THINK MAKES THE MOST WINE? IF YOU’RE THINKING BORDEAUX IN FRANCE OR NAPA AND Sonoma counties in California, guess again. If you named Tuscany in Italy, the home of Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and other popular wine — no, that’s not it either. It’s also not any of Spain’s wine regions, nor is it South Australia. The region that makes the most wine by far is Languedoc-Roussillon in France. Languedoc-Roussillon (pronounced LAANG-doc roo-see-OWN) is a large area in the south of France on the Mediterranean coast. The same size as Massachusetts, Languedoc-Roussillon stretches about halfway — roughly 155 miles — up the French coast from the Spanish border to the city of Nîmes. (Nîmes, by the way, is famous for its ancient Roman buildings and is near Arles where the artist Vincent Van Gough lived briefly and made hundreds of paintings.) Annually, the region makes well over 1.6 billion bottles of red, white, rosé, and other wines, roughly 11% of the world’s total wine production and over a third of France’s wine output. That’s an extraordinary amount of wine: about three times the amount of wine made yearly in Bordeaux and about four times Napa and Sonoma’s combined annual production. It’s almost six times all the wine bottled yearly in Tuscany and around the same as Australia’s annual wine production. I was amazed to learn this, and not just because so many American wine drinkers have likely never heard of Languedoc-

Roussillon wine — let alone knowingly sipped a glass or bought a bottle. While Languedoc-Roussillon wines have a huge market in Europe, most wine retailers in the U.S., including some otherwise very well-stocked wine specialty stores, carry small or modest wine selections from this important region. The exception may be Languedoc-Roussillon’s rosé wines, now made in great amounts and imported heavily to the U.S. I don’t want to discourage anyone from rushing out to snap up a bottle of tasty Languedoc-Roussillon rosé. However, the best Languedoc-Roussillon wines are primarily reds, particularly those made with syrah, grenache, mourvèdre, cinsault, and carignan grapes traditionally grown in southern France’s warm Mediterranean climate. If you’re not already a fan, these are the wines I want to encourage you to seek out and try. When you find and drink some good ones, as I recently did, you’ll hopefully be pleased. I was. The several Languedoc-Roussillon red wines I tasted to prepare this column were rich and aromatic, loaded with delicious dark red fruit, spice, and other flavors. A couple were penetrating wines — pure, intense, and direct. All were food-friendly and fun to drink. They’re good matches for roasted or grilled poultry, lamb, or beef, and also hearty vegetable dishes. They also had a special quality associated with coming from a particular kind of place — or terroir, as the French call it. For Languedoc-Roussillon, this quality is said to emanate from
the combination of Mediterranean climate, limestone and schist soils, and garrigue, the region’s grey-green scrub landscape full of wild thyme, rosemary, lavender, and other aromatic plants. The blends I tasted were reminiscent of Côtes du Rhône, made with similar grape varietals not far to the east in the Rhône wine region. The LanguedocRoussillon wines were generally more dense, powerful, and savory. Also, like Côtes du Rhône, the Languedoc-Roussillon wines I tried were terrific values, selling in the $12-25 range. That’s typical for high-quality wines from this region, although you can certainly spend more to get even greater quality wines, when you find them. I’ll share some background, recommendations, and other information to help you search. By the way, Languedoc-Roussillon also makes many notable white wines with grapes like grenache blanc, clairette, piquepoul, marsanne, roussanne, and rolle (aka Vermentino). Muscat grapes are grown, too, and made into nottoo-sweet dessert wines with tropical and stone fruit flavors. And the area of Limoux is popular for sparkling wines. The region also makes wines from chardonnay, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon and other popular varietals — not a topic here but worth trying.
Land and Language of Yes Languedoc-Roussillon is two distinct areas. Roussillon, on the border with Spain, shares the native language and culture of Catalan with the neighboring autonomous Spanish region
of Catalunya and its capital, Barcelona. Languedoc is next to Roussillon but has a different history. Its early inhabitants spoke Occitan, an ancient Romance language still a second language in Languedoc and many other Mediterranean communities today. Although French has been the official language in all parts of France since 1539, many old ways persist. The name Languedoc is derived from the Occitan phrase Langa d’oc, which means “language of yes.” Pays d’oc (pay DOC), a common term for the Languedoc-Roussillon region, means “land of yes.” Pays d’Oc also refers to wines made from grapes coming from multiple parts of the region, as opposed to a specific town or subregion. If you’re a Francophile, you may know that an early version of French spoken in central France was langue d’oïl. Oïl meant “yes,” which evolved into oui (pronounced wee), which of course, is “yes” in contemporary French. More recently, in 2016 Languedoc-Roussillon was combined with the Midi-Pyrénées region as part of a national consolidation of regional governments. The name of the new administrative region is Occitanie (aak-SEE-tuh-nee) in obvious recognition of the area’s Occitan roots. Fortunately, the area’s wines are still identified as Languedoc-Roussillon or by the names of its many smaller viticulture subregions and towns, such as Minervois, SaintChinian, and Limoux. Labels on wines made with grapes sourced from multiple parts of the region often say IGP Pays d’Oc or Vin d’Pays, the term often used for simple or generic still table wines.
Getting to Know Languedoc-Roussillon Wine Winemaking in Languedoc-Roussillon dates back more than 2,000 years, having been introduced by ancient Greeks and Romans. Historically, however, the region’s viticulture developed differently from France’s more famous Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Rhone regions. Quantity was emphasized over quality >>>

Pops with dark cherry, cassis, chocolate and other flavors. Silky smooth. Simply outstanding. 100% Syrah made by prominent Burgundy winemakers.

S.E. CUSTOM
Try the Wine <<< during the last century, as hundreds of small growers and their cooperatives grew massive amounts of grapes and produced seemingly endless bottles of mostly inexpensive, mediocre table wines. They supplied homes and restaurants throughout Europe with simple but palatable everyday house wines. During the past 20-25 years, strong competition for cheap wines and changing tastes prompted a reevaluation of the region’s wine business. Fortunately, low land and labor costs enabled significant investment in improving Languedoc-Roussillon wines. Both grape and wine quality have improved immensely as a result. Notably, the region has become a leader in making simultaneously highly rated and affordable wines using organic, biodynamic, and other sustainable methods.

Buying Languedoc-Roussillon Wines As I mentioned earlier, you’re likely to see only modest selections of Languedoc-Roussillon wines. My observation is that they often get sandwiched between bottles of other French wines from Burgundy, the Rhone, and other regions. That can make buying them even more confusing. There are several categories or tiers of LanguedocRoussillon wines, nearly always identified on wine labels. Wines labeled IGP Pays d’Oc (where IGP stands for Indication Géographique Protégée or Protected Geographic Indication) will generally be the least expensive and may be made from grapes grown anywhere in the region. Wines with the certification of authenticity, Languedoc AOC (Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée or Controlled Designation of Origin), may come from anywhere in the designated AOC area or from specific sub-areas, some of which have their own AOCs. The most important village AOCs for red wines are Corbieres, Faugères, La Clape, Minervois, Pic Saint Loup, and Saint-Chinian. Among Roussillon red wines, look for Côtes-du-Roussillon-Villages. Some of the IGP wines can be quite good but may not have the personality, intensity, or more focused flavors of wines made only from grapes in specific subappellations, towns, or villages. I suggest picking to AOC sub-region or village wines if you can. Most of the red wines I’ve seen in stores and online are blends, with a handful being 100% Syrah, Grenache, or other grapes. I suggest trying wines made primarily with syrah and grenache plus a bit of carignan or mourvèdre. Carignan, while not especially fruity, is a hallmark blending grape that, like mourvèdre, adds deep color, acidity, tannins, and earthy flavors to syrah and grenache. In addition to the fine vintners who made the wines described below, here are some others to look for: Chateau Maris, Gèrard Bertrand, Paul Mas, Peuch-Haut, Assières, Haut-Blanville, Saint-Eulalie, La Fage, and d’Anglès. 28655 S. Dixie Highway Homestead
The story behind this monument to love goes like this: Edward Leedskalnin was a Latvian immigrant who moved to Florida for the warm weather after he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. The love of his life, Agnes (a 16-yearold at the time of their engagement), left him the day before their wedding. Ed was heartbroken. He built the castle as an ode to his lost love, hoping against all odds that one day she would reunite with him and the two would live happily-ever-after with their kids at his handmade castle.

Keeping it Real
LOCAL MOTHER AND CARDINAL GIBBONS GRAD DAUGHTER STAR IN THE NEW HBO REALTY SERIES “MY MOM, YOUR DAD”
INTERVIEW BY RICHARD ROSSER
“My Mom, Your Dad” follows a group of single parents who their college-age kids have nominated for a second chance at love. The parents move into a house together, unaware that their adult children are right down the street living in a second house, watching their every move through hidden cameras and manipulating their encounters. From humorous cringe moments to heartwarming confessions, the kids will see their parents in a whole new light as they are presented with opportunities to select who they’ll be matched with on oneon-one dates, and who may join the family Thanksgiving for years to come. One of the duos featured on “My Mom, Your Dad” is Karen and her daughter Breana from Pompano Beach. Richard Rosser spoke to them about their time on the show. RICHARD ROSSER: I know you’ve given many interviews but I’m the local guy, so I’m also interested in the hometown angle. What is your background in the local area? KAREN: I moved to Pompano Beach in 1998. I grew up out west in Cooper City and Miramar. And when I got married, I reluctantly moved to Pompano Beach — I was not an East Side girl. Now, you cannot take me away because I will kick, scream and drag my feet. I love Pompano Beach. It is the little town that could. The city has boomed since I’ve lived here, and I’m so proud of this city and would never move away. And Breana was born at Holy Cross Hospital, and she’s lived here all her life. BREANA: Yes, it was fantastic living here. I loved
growing up in year-round warm weather. I love the heat. I love going to the beach. That’s what I did almost every weekend growing up. RICHARD ROSSER: Breana, where did you go to school? BREANA: I attended Saint Coleman’s Catholic school for elementary and middle school. And then, I attended Cardinal Gibbons High School. RICHARD ROSSER: So what did you do as a younger person around town? BREANA: I was on my high school cheerleading team for my sophomore and junior years. But then I hurt my back, and I couldn’t cheer my senior year, so I got a job at Surf World. RICHARD ROSSER: How did you learn about this show, FEBRUARY 2022 • pointpubs.com
85
Breana, because you learned about it and you nominated your mother? BREANA: Yes, so I nominated my mother. I found the ad for the show casting on Instagram. I showed the ad to my mom and said, ‘Look, they’re looking for single divorced parents and their college-aged kids. Let’s apply — this would be funny.’ But, I was not thinking seriously about it. RICHARD ROSSER: Go on. BREANA: I never thought we would get picked. And all of a sudden, we got a phone call, and then there was another phone call, and then there was a Zoom meeting, and then my mom and I thought, ‘Oh, wow, this is really happening right now.’ And then suddenly, they asked us to fly out to LA. We started filming shortly after that. RICHARD ROSSER: What happened next? BREANA: They told us that the children would go into a content-creating household to make content about having single parents. So we thought we were going to create content with our parents. Then once we got to LA they let us know we would be in two separate houses. Once we got to the houses — well, my mom knew she would be dating other parents, but we didn’t know as the kids that we were going to be watching them and meddling with them. We learned that when we arrived at the house. It was definitely very shocking but also fun. RICHARD ROSSER: Did anyone back out of the show at that point?
I learned a lot about the parents that I didn’t need to know. — Breana KAREN: No, no one backed out. I think all the parents were game for it. There were thousands of applications for the show. So you feel really good that you got chosen out of all these people across America. We’re pretty proud because, besides being residents of our booming Pompano Beach, Breana and I are the only Hispanic cast members. RICHARD ROSSER: So let me ask you, what can you tell me about the experience? I know you’re not going to tell me what happens in the show. I won’t even go there. But what is your takeaway? What is your feeling? KAREN: It was just a fantastic experience. We bonded so beautifully as a family with the other retreat members — the other cast members. I learned a lot about
myself in regards to dating. I’ve been divorced for eight years, and it’s been tough for me to be vulnerable, let my walls down and open up. But, I was able to do that on the show, and through this whole experience, I saw a different side of me. RICHARD ROSSER: How did that happen? KAREN: There were various activities they had us do. One time we stared into each other’s eyes for five minutes. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul — and it’s true. And the yoga paddleboarding date was hilarious. I thought I am active. I do yoga, and being from Pompano Beach, I know how to paddleboard. I just never combined the two. And while you do the yoga poses, you depend on each other and have to communicate without words. So you only focus on the person that you’re with. You have to be a little vulnerable and trust them. RICHARD ROSSER: Really? KAREN: The various activities just opened all of us up and allowed us to be vulnerable. RICHARD ROSSER: So Breana, I’m going to flip the question over to you. What did you learn as a younger person? BREANA: I learned a lot about the parents that I didn’t need to know. The experience opened our eyes and humanized our parents. We learned that our parents are just like us, they’re trying to date just like us, and they’re trying to figure it out, as we are. And just because they’re our moms and our dads doesn’t mean they know everything. And that brought us closer together. I don’t want to speak for everyone, but I believe it did the same for them. RICHARD ROSSER: Anything else you want to add to that? BREANA: But also the friendships and the relationships that grew on the show. Going into a reality show, you hear no one usually gets along, and people can be fake. But we genuinely were all so close and such a family. RICHARD ROSSER: You’re talking about the younger people or both groups? The younger and the older. KAREN: Both groups. BREANA: Both groups grew such friendships. We were like a family. The kids bonded because our parents are divorced, and we all have two separate households. We share all the troubles that go with having divorced parents. That brought us closer together as kids. And then watching our parents who are all single parents, that brought them closer together on a different level. RICHARD ROSSER: Were the parents and the kids ever together? KAREN: No, but those kids meddled in our dates quite a bit. BREANA: We spent most of our days watching our parents. We really got to know the parents. RICHARD ROSSER: So tell me about meddling in your parents’ dates.
BREANA: I can tell you that we had fun with the manipulations and the meddling, but it also came with some consequences that made things very awkward and cringy. RICHARD ROSSER: Ah. Would you have done anything differently? BREANA: No, I’m very proud of how the show turned out. And we had no clue how the show would be presented. The producers could create anything they wanted, but it turned out very beautiful and very wholesome It simply shows the love between the parents and the kids. RICHARD ROSSER: Oh, that’s good. Do you feel that way too Karen? KAREN: I do. As for the parents, what you see on camera is exactly what happened. We were very genuine, very open; we were ourselves. And we were really present and trying to form relationships and find a partner. That part is real. I think the production team has done a fantastic job. I don’t want to give too much away because I want the readers to watch the series, but there was a point when Breana and I faced a very difficult moment. I saw it yesterday for the first time, and it brought tears to my eyes. Watching it again was like an out-of-body experience I hope the readers take this journey and see that dating life doesn’t end because you get divorced. And your dating life doesn’t end because you’re over 40 or 50. You can find love, or you can find friendships, or you can find self-love. Yes, there are those cringy moments, and it’s funny. The kids made some moments so awkward for us, but we didn’t find out until after we left that they were manipulating situations — that our kids were the so-called dating consultants. RICHARD ROSSER: So that’s the gimmick. KAREN: That’s the gimmick. Yeah, we didn’t know. We kept getting told the dating consultants wanted you to go on a date with a specific person and then suddenly something strange would happen on the date. And I would think — this is crazy, what’s going on here? At one point, the parents did wonder if it was our kids? But we didn’t think the producers would do that. And lo and behold, our kids were pulling the strings. RICHARD ROSSER: So how could they do this show again now that the secret’s out? BREANA: The producers do their magic. Somehow they got us on there, and they didn’t even tell us why we were there. KAREN: For season two they would have to come up with something original. I have some ideas for them.
But, the show was created by Greg Daniels and his daughter Haley Daniels. Greg Daniels produced “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation.” I’m sure they’ll come up with a different concept for season two. RICHARD ROSSER: Yeah, good point. KAREN: A lot of fans have asked about a reunion. So, hopefully, there’ll be a reunion with an update on what happened with the show. RICHARD ROSSER: Can I ask about success with any of the dates on your end? KAREN: Definitely, I need the readers to tune in to see if I did find love or if I didn’t. RICHARD ROSSER: I had to ask. Okay, what did I miss? BREANA: I had success with meddling.
RICHARD ROSSER: Is there anything you want to add? KAREN: The show is a fresh concept that highlights
people dating in their 40s and50s, and it also features college-age kids, so there are two age groups. Dating shows usually highlight people in their 20s. So this is something that most of America can relate to, whether you’re young or older. RICHARD ROSSER: It sounds like the showrunners were serious about keeping it authentic instead of tawdry and salacious. KAREN: Absolutely. HBO kept it authentic, and they kept it honest. RICHARD ROSSER: You guys have been gabbing for hours now, so I’ll let you go, and I look forward to watching the show. KAREN: This interview is more of an honor for us than many of the other ones — not to knock anyone. We look forward to reading the story. We absolutely love Pompano Beach, our hometown. Y

Superior Results for Hip and Knee Surgery Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the rst phone call, you will nd my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs. I care for people in their 80s and 90s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20s and 30s who desire an improved quality of life and want to feel “normal” again.
Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient. “Dr. Leone is the best. I had my left hip done using the SPAIRE technique and the recovery was so incredible I decided to have my right hip done.” ~Bettina Kapp
