ou are most certainly aware that we are in the midst of unprecedented activity in the high-end real estate market… resulting in critically low inventory of million dollar-plus properties like yours. Consequently, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sell your important property to fully maximize your ROI. Since Premier Estate Properties has achieved the majority of recently closed as well as pending million dollar-plus sales in your marketplace, we are privy to market valuations that are not yet public knowledge. That makes us uniquely qualified to guide you in accurately valuing your ultraluxury property.

Superior Results for Hip and Knee Surgery Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the rst phone call, you will nd my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs. I care for people in their 80s and 90s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20s and 30s who desire an improved quality of life and want to feel “normal” again.
Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient. “Dr. Leone is the best. I had my left hip done using the SPAIRE technique and the recovery was so incredible I decided to have my right hip done.” ~Bettina Kapp
“I went to three orthopedic surgeons and Dr. Leone was the only one who discovered the underlying cause of my knee pain. Four days after my knee revision surgery I was walking eight miles.” ~Dan Bell

Making Miracles for Beginners BY SUSAN ROSSER
I WAS IN A TIKTOK-INDUCED STUPOR WHEN SUDDENLY BOBBI BROWN, THE MAKEUP MOGUL, WAS PEDDLING HER JONES ROAD MIRACLE BALM — APPARENTLY, THIS IS THE COSMETIC I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW I NEEDED. During the pandemic, my beauty routine pathetically dwindled down to showering. Yes, that counts. And if I am being completely transparent, there were days when even bathing was beyond my abilities. But eventually, I grew tired of looking like a haggard llama and ventured forth in search of new cosmetics. Enter the Miracle Balm — my new go-to beauty product. I was immediately captivated by the word miracle. Goodness knows I could use several. But it was Bobbi Brown’s pitch that Miracle Balm is makeup for people who don’t wear makeup that really intrigued me. And while I do love the stuff, I really love the story behind the stuff. When Bobbi Brown, the woman behind Jones Road, sold her eponymous makeup brand to Estee Lauder, she signed a 25-year noncompete agreement. Then after 25 years and one day, she launched Jones Road, her new beauty brand. It would not be beyond reason to assume Bobbi Brown was set for life after selling to Estee Lauder. And yet she was still motivated to launch an entirely new label. She is either exceptionally driven, really into makeup or both. So as I slather on my Miracle Balm each morning, while I

am enthralled with my new dewy look, I love that every day I am reminded of Bobbi Brown’s story of ambition, success, perseverance and creativity. I peer into the mirror and ask myself, what can I do today to make it a day worthy of my new Miracle Balm? How can I be a little more like Bobbi Brown? We think of miracles as improbable yet extraordinary events. But, if we switch up our assumptions and suppose it is within our capabilities to create our own miracles, that attitude puts a whole spin on life. I know it sounds absurd to be so enthralled with a new skincare product, but seriously, I love starting my day thinking about miracles. And wouldn’t the world be a better place if we began each morning with the simple question — what miracles can I make? Obviously, I am starting with my face, and I’ll go from there. Y

Lighthouse Point Yacht Club Redevelopment Plans Complete Final Approval Stage Last month, the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club redevelopment plans reached the conclusion of an approval process that began three years ago. The City Commission, at its Feb. 8 meeting, approved five final items that will allow Terry Paterson, owner and developer of the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club, located at 2701 NE 42nd St., to proceed with his plans. The redevelopment project includes a new 63,000-square-foot clubhouse, a new 3,900-square-foot tennis center, a 2,400-square-foot renovated kids’ activity center, 21 luxury townhomes and one singlefamily home. The development will retain 78 boat slips and five tennis courts, three of which will be constructed on the roof of the new clubhouse. The Commission approved on second reading a land use map amendment to permit residential uses on the property; a text amendment to the city’s Comprehensive Plan to clarify the permitted uses in the land use category assigned to the property; an ordinance creating a new Yacht Club-Mixed Use (YC-MU) zoning district; the development agreement; and an ordinance to rezone the yacht club property from a business district to the Yacht Club-Mixed Use (YC-MU) zoning district, which included review of

the proposed final site plan. Commissioner Jason Joffe said he was voting against the rezoning ordinance because he believes “we should respect the recommendation of the Planning and Zoning Board, as well as some recommendations from the City Administration,” to leave more space between the three townhome buildings proposed for the west side of the property in order to avoid a “wall effect” and “create a better aesthetic view” for the residents who live across the canal. Joffe said he also had concerns about the density of the project, and the lighting on the rooftop tennis courts.

The Commission spent approximately 1.5 hours going over the development agreement, which identifies the roles of the applicant and the City, and includes detailed information on how the project will be built, the project requirements and the construction schedule. Several items discussed at the first reading on Jan. 11 were incorporated into the development agreement, including a provision that any special event at the yacht club planned to have more than 325 guests will be required to provide for off-site overflow parking to be reviewed and approved by City staff. The Commission made several amendments to the >>>

Lighthouse Point Yacht Club <<< development agreement during the second reading. The development agreement sets the total duration of construction of the project at 40 months from the start of construction, with the ability for the applicant to request an additional year. The Commission added the provision that it can grant any extension or combination of extensions that, in totality, do not exceed one year. The Commission discussed at length how traffic calming on NE 27th Terrace, which leads directly into the yacht club from NE 39th Street, will be handled during and after the construction period. Language was added that says the city traffic engineer, “within 90 days of the effective date of the development agreement,” will determine the number and location of temporary traffic calming devices to be used during the construction period. The City will be responsible for the installation, and the developer will be responsible for the cost of installation. The plan is to install permanent traffic calming devices on NE 27th Terrace once construction of the yacht club development is completed. The developer and the City will come up with a permanent traffic calming plan prior to the issuance of a certificate of occupancy. Language was added to the development agreement that specifies the developer will pay for the permanent traffic calming devices. Installation of a sidewalk is 36 pointpubs.com •

also being considered for NE 27th Terrace. The developer would be responsible for all costs associated with the installation of approximately 1,300 linear feet in a location to be determined by the City.
Commissioner Michael Long said he doesn’t think a sidewalk on NE 27th Terrace is the answer, and that, in terms of aesthetics, something more than speed bumps and a sidewalk is needed. Long said he would like a plan brought to the City Commission for other options, and wants a dialogue with the developer, the city engineers, commissioners and residents. Joffe reiterated his concern about the lights on the rooftop tennis courts and light spillage into the surrounding neighborhood. Per the development agreement, the tennis courts will close at 9pm daily, and the tennis court lights will only operate only during the permitted hours of play. Mayor Glenn Troast said he was concerned about the lights, and had heard from residents who are also concerned. He suggested that from Nov. 1 to April 1, the lights be turned off by 7pm, and the rest of the year
ABOVE Rendering of the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club
they be turned off by 9pm. Commissioner Earl Maucker said the City shouldn’t control the timing of the lights, and if there’s an issue it should be looked at again later. Commission Vice President Sandy Johnson agreed. The Commission did not change the wording in the development agreement regarding the tennis court lights. The development agreement includes a requirement that the City Commission review the progress of the project every six months. The Commission decided that there should be an initial check-in 90 days after the effective date of the development agreement to verify the status of the permitting, since it affects the starting point of the construction timeline. After that, the Commission will get updates semiannually. Paterson needs to get various signatures and prove financial viability before the development agreement takes effect. He said he plans to apply for a demolition permit after Easter. Paterson said plans for an exterior wall and landscaping along NE 42nd Street, which will provide buffering from noise and construction debris, have been prioritized and will be one of the first plans submitted for a building permit and will be started immediately upon issuance of the building permit. “If done properly, with respect to the residents surrounding this, it will be a good project,” said Long. Commission President Kyle Van Buskirk told Paterson: “We are putting a lot of faith in you. People are going to be watching. I believe you will make it happen and do the right thing.” Y

Crime in Lighthouse Point Is at an All-Time Low Lighthouse Point Police Chief Ross Licata presented the city’s 2021 crime statistics to the City Commission last month, saying “I have some good news to report for the residents of Lighthouse Point.” In 2021, there was a 37.5% decrease in Part 1 crimes – the largest single-year decline in the past 30 years. It was also the lowest level of Part 1 crimes in Lighthouse Point in the last 30 years, said Licata. “I only say the last 30 years because that’s as far back as my crime statistics go,” said Licata. “My guess is that it’s more than 30 years.” Part 1 crimes, as defined by the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Program, are all violent crimes – including rape, robbery, aggravated assault – and also burglaries, auto thefts, larcenies, thefts and arson. In 2021, there were eight violent crimes committed in Lighthouse Point, and in each instance, police officers made an arrest or cleared the case, said Licata. There was a 10% decrease in Part 2 crimes, which include simple assaults, fraud, vandalism, drugs, weapons and sex offenses. There was a 36% decrease in auto

clearance rate of 41%, the highest crime clearance rate it has recorded in the last 30 years, according to Licata. “I believe that the impact of implementing our License Plate Recognition system 10 years ago has had a dramatic effect not only on our clearance rate but also on systematically reducing the crime in Lighthouse Point,” said Licata. Licata said there seems to be a misconception on the part of some residents that crime is elevated in Lighthouse Point. He thinks

Thefts – which are typically the number one crime reported in Lighthouse Point – decreased by 47%, said Licata. The Lighthouse Point Police Department recorded a crime
it’s primarily because the police department issues Nixle reports (via text message and email) to alert people about certain types of crime that are occurring, “not because we’re having significant increases in crime, but we just want to educate them on what to do so that we could bring our crime down even lower.” “It is working, and I think it’s important that everybody knows that crime has never been as low as it is right now,” said Licata. Isle Casino Redevelopment: Plans for a Topgolf Facility are Under Review POMPANO BEACH A Topgolf facility is being proposed as part of the redevelopment of the Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park into Live! Resorts Pompano — an entertainment, hotel, dining, retail, residential and office hub. Plans for the Topgolf sports entertainment venue have been submitted to the City and are currently under review. The proposed Topgolf facility would occupy an approximately 11-acre vacant parcel on the southeast corner of SW Third Street (Racetrack Road) and SW 23rd Ave (Lucky Lane), north of the existing Isle Casino building. The entire Isle Casino property, located on the southeast corner of Powerline Road and Racetrack Road, is being redeveloped by The Cordish Companies, which has already constructed 12 Live! facilities in cities throughout the United States, including Atlanta, Baltimore, St. Louis and Philadelphia. The Topgolf facility is being developed by ARCO/Murray, a national design-build contractor with an office in Fort Lauderdale. The Topgolf venue would feature a state-of-the-art three-level building that includes 102 climate-controlled hitting bays for year-round play,

a full-service restaurant and bar, entertainment and event space, outdoor seating and dining areas, and a roof terrace. Adjacent to the building, there would be an outfield golf driving range where players of all ages and skill levels can take aim at giant dartboard-like targets using micro-chipped golf balls that score themselves, providing instant feedback on each shot’s accuracy and distance. The outfield would be surrounded by 170-foot-high netting. The Topgolf facility would also

include a separate miniature golf area measuring approximately 9,870 square feet. According to the site plan, a parking area with 295 spaces would be provided for the Topgolf facility. Topgolf is a global sports entertainment company headquartered in Dallas, Texas. The first Topgolf location opened in Watford, England in 2000. Currently, there are approximately 70 Topgolf facilities throughout the United States, as well as a number of facilities in international locations, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Mexico and Dubai. In South Florida, there are Topgolf facilities in Miami Gardens and Doral. Topgolf facilities typically offer golf lessons, leagues, tournaments, concerts, and social events. Currently, the City is also reviewing site plans for other components of the Live! Resorts Pompano project — an e-commerce distribution center, an entertainment complex and a retail development that includes a Publix. Y

Two Important Skills You Must Know WE ARE APPROACHING OUR 19TH YEAR IN BUSINESS AS ELITE FORCE MARTIAL ARTS. WE OPENED ON JUN. 1, 2003. BACK THEN, I WAS AN EAGER 26-YEAR-OLD KID WHO HAD A dream of being successful. Fortunately, my mentor gave me some excellent advice. He encouraged me to commit to personal development. He influenced me to read for 30-minutes per day when I wake up in the morning and to listen to inspiring/ instructional audio programs every chance I got. This advice changed my life! In 2005, I came across the bestselling author, Robert Kyosaki, talking about the two most essential skills you must have. They were much different than I expected. I was all ears! What is the first one?
The first one is having the ability to sell. The reality is we are all in sales. Parents sell their kids to develop good habits, do their homework, and be kind to others. Doctors and people in the fitness industry sell you on taking care of your health and exercise regularly. Your Pastor, Priest, or Rabbi sell you on the idea of living a spiritual life. I have a mentor who is a 15-time best-selling author. In fact, he wrote the best-selling book on sales of all time, called “The Little Red Book of Selling.” He says that to sell effectively, you must help the person you are working with. Selling is nothing more than influence. You are influencing another person to take action, or in some cases, not to take a

specific action. In the dojo, we influence kids to be respectful, disciplined and focused. We sell people on the idea of eating the right foods, training regularly, and giving their best effort. Think of some of the most successful people and companies. Maybe it is Apple, Starbucks or Google. You to use their products because they add value to your life. The reality is that everyone is in sales, and if you are adding value to people’s lives, then you should get out there and influence people into action. What is the second most important skill? Managing money! Many schools do not teach this financial skills such as how to balance a checkbook, pay themselves first, or make emergency plans if they deal with a financial crisis. Every year, people spend massive amounts of money on holiday gifts. In many cases, exceed their budgets, leaving them with credit card debt. Instead of entering the new year with a renewed excitement, they start the year higher levels of stress, worry, and anxiety because they have too much month at the end of their money. How much more enjoyable would the holidays be if everyone put a small amount of money aside from each paycheck to pay for holiday gifts? What would happen if everyone adopted the idea of “pay yourself first” and had money set aside for unexpected bills, emergencies, and savings for retirement? I’ll bet their stress levels would drop drastically! Suzie Orman is a best-selling author on money management, and she says that everyone should have an emergency fund set aside of 8 months of expenses in case of an emergency, such as job loss, injury, etc. Money is certainly not the most crucial thing in the world, but it is right up there with air. You need it to survive. Why not learn how to manage it to make your life easier and better. As Jim Rohn says, success is not something you pursue. You attract success by becoming an attractive person. Learning, applying, and growing will help you become that person! Legal Matters
Legal Plan Checklist I have touched on these subjects in many articles. Here is a condensed checklist.
1. Current Advanced Care Directives:
A. DESIGNATION OF HEALTH CARE SURROGATE for someone to make your medical decisions if you cannot communicate. Even if you are married, you must have this legal document, and it needs to be current and done by a Florida lawyer. Do not rely on generic forms or a document from your doctor, a hospital or out of state documents. B. LIVING WILL Very specific Florida language regarding “pulling the plug.” Must be witnessed and notarized and designate someone to make the final decision C. DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY Covers
legal and financial matters while you are alive. Again, needs to be done by a lawyer who is aware of current Florida law, including many specific powers that must be initialed by you to be valid. Our current document is 26 pages. When you die, the advanced care directives die with you.
2. Last Will and Testament If you are a Florida resident, you should have a Florida will and your personal representative (executor) must be a Florida resident or a blood relative. 3. Probate If you own real estate, in Florida or elsewhere, you need one of these to avoid probate when you die. A. DEED AS JOINT TENANTS WITH RIGHT OF SURVIVORSHIP B. LIFE ESTATE DEED You own property for the rest of your life
and you designate someone on the Deed as having the remainder interest to inherit it without probate when you die. Be sure it is an “enhanced” (also known as “Lady Bird”) to allow you to sell it without consent or joinder of the person you name. C. TRUST AND DEED transferring property to you (and your spouse) as trustee(s) of your trust. This allows you to name contingent beneficiaries in case your first choice dies before you

or with you in a common accident. The revocable living trust also allows you to buy future properties as trustee and to amend the trust at any time while you are alive. The deed to your home should have language confirming that it remains your homestead. The above documents should be done with the assistance of an estate planning attorney.
The following need to be done by you personally: 4. Beneficiaries Designate beneficiaries on all of your accounts to avoid probate. This is also known as payable on death (p.o.d.), transfer on death (T.O.D.) or in trust for (I.T.F.). Also designate contingent beneficiaries. Each institution has its own forms but it should not cost you anything except some time. 5. Advanced Funeral Planning If you know that you want to be cremated or buried, contact cremation societies or funeral homes to discuss pre-need plans. You will be signing a contract to pre-pay for your funeral, saving your loved ones a lot of stress, time and money. Be sure to give a copy of your contract to your primary and contingent personal r epresentative so they will know who to call. 6. Long Term Care If you qualify based on age and health, consider long-term home health care plans. You will be entering into a contract providing for a specified term of years that you are eligible for home health care if incapacitated. These contracts vary greatly, so shop around and consult an impartial expert before signing. 7. Insurance Have car insurance that includes at least $100,000 of bodily injury liability (B.I.) and uninsured motorist (U.M.). Do not have any deductible on your P.I.P. (no fault). If you own more than one car, consider “stacking”, which allows you to double (two cars) or triple (three cars) your uninsured motorist coverage for a small additional premium. Uninsured motorist is the most important insurance you can have, since Florida does not require bodily injury coverage. If you do all the homework on this list, you are well on your way to getting an “A” in Legalities of Life 101. Transferring Values—
Not Just Wealth—to Your Heirs BY GREGORY EDWARDS
MANY OF US HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT HOW TO BEST TRANSFER OUR WEALTH TO OUR HEIRS. UNFORTUNATELY, WE SEE THAT PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS WITH SIGNIFICANT ASSETS often don’t spend enough time on passing along the values that helped them build, grow and maintain that wealth. The resulting “values vacuum” can potentially cause some big problems when heirs inherit large sums. Too often, heirs blow through an inheritance. Or children might become complacent and never develop the life skills needed to generate their own success. Wealth can even cause some heirs to believe that rules don’t apply to them and they shouldn’t be held accountable for their bad actions.
Clarify your values The first step is to define your own values toward wealth and success — and which of those values you most want to instill in your family members. To that end, define the beliefs you’d like to see heirs adopt and adhere to when making financial decisions in their lives. Below are some common values: • SELF-RELIANCE the ability to financially “stand on your own two feet” • EDUCATION an appreciation of the value of higher learning • CRITICAL THINKING the ability to navigate through challenges • FISCAL PRUDENCE how to live within their means, make smart financial decisions and grow their wealth over time • MOTIVATION the drive to work hard to achieve what they most want out of life • PHILANTHROPY an interest in helping others who need support It is crucial to have conversations with family members about money and values so you can instill your beliefs and hopes. Communicate the values you care about, and explain why you see those values as so important to heirs’ realizing a good life. Talking about wealth and values doesn’t automatically mean you need to reveal your net worth or how much money an heir may one day inherit. You can discuss the importance of being a good steward of wealth without diving into the actual numbers.
Action Plan 1 Create a formal family values statement together. 2 Involve kids in select financial decisions. Give kids real-life experiences with how money, choices and values interact. Get older children involved in choosing charities or causes the family should consider. Bring adult children into the process of how to invest family wealth. 3 Demonstrate the power of saving and compounding. Consider matching your children’s deposits, as an employer might do with a 401(k). Kids will quickly see that saved money can mean more money. 4 Create a family bank. Some affluent families establish informal family “banks” for lending money to their adult children who need funds to buy a home, start a business or pay for some other major life expense. Communicating your values about wealth, success and purpose to your children won’t guarantee that they will avoid negative outcomes—or become the world’s greatest CEOs. But in our experience, heirs who understand how their parents and grandparents view such issues tend to be more driven to make their way in the world and be better stewards of assets they receive. Get Psyched
Attachment and Violence BY DR. JILL SELBACH THE EVENTS OF FEB. 14 2018, IN OUR OWN BACK YARD, WERE HORRIFIC. MY FAMILY KNOWS TEACHERS AT MARJORY STONEMAN DOUGLAS HIGH SCHOOL. WE HAVE FRIENDS WITH children at the school. And having children myself and a husband who is a Broward County high school teacher, the tragedy hit home. Today, we are seeing an alarming escalation in violence across the country.
As a psychologist, I have worked with runaways, kids involved in the juvenile justice system, gang members and, as they say, “throw away” youth. These are kids whose parents have pushed them out and refuse to be involved with them. Early in my career, I became interested in attachment theory.

According to John Bowlby, attachment is a life span concept pertaining to the infant forming a prototypical model with the caregiver. This attachment construct is considered an organized system of behavior that is essential to human development. It is described in terms of stable behavioral patterns, which indicate the quality of the bond within a relationship. Attachment provides security and comfort, but it also allows for an individual’s freedom to move away from the security with confidence. So, rather than get all theoretical, if we focus on building better attachment from infancy, throughout childhood and adolescence, we will have productive, caring members of a community who work together and provide support and comfort to one another. The kids with whom I was working lacked bonds to a caregiver. It was very difficult to build rapport or trust. Individuals who have secure attachment fare better in all aspects of life. Later in life, securely attached infants and toddlers have better self-esteem, more independence, better relationships with parents, authority figures and friends. They tend to have better impulse control, empathy and compassion. Securely attached kids bounce back better when faced with adversity. They perform better in school, and they have better marital and family relationships (Main et al. 1985; Waters et al 1979; Troy and Sroufe 1987; Jacobson and Wille 1986; Sroufe et al. 1993). >>>

Children with attachment disorders tend to be concerned with self-gratification, display a lack of responsibility, are dishonest, and disregard rules within the family and society. These children can be aggressive, controlling, and exhibit disordered behavior and a lack of empathy. They have difficulty giving and receiving love and affection. According to Raine in 1993, teenage boys who had early attachment difficulties were three times more likely to commit violent crimes. Eighty percent of children coming from high-risk families have been found to have attachment disorders. High-risk families are characterized by abuse, neglect, domestic violence, poverty, substance abuse, history of maltreatment in parents’ childhoods, depression and other serious psychological disorders of parents. When a child has secure attachment relationships, they find safety and protection in those relationships with a constant caregiver. These relationships aid in building trust and reciprocity as well as healthy social and cognitive development through confident exploration of surroundings. Self-control, impulse and emotional management are also developed through these secure relationships. A child develops their selfworth, identity and independence through relationships with caregivers. This is disrupted when a child does not have a secure attachment with his or her caregiver. Perhaps the most important qualities that develop are the ones that inhibit the desire to harm others: conscience, empathy and compassion. Human beings need connection to others. When a person does not feel connected to significant people in his or her life or a community and feels a sense of self-worth, it is hard to have empathy and compassion for others. As parents of children without attachment issues providing good supervision, getting kids involved with community events, sports, other adults, and children is important for them to continue to feel they matter, have worth, and accomplish good things. Early intervention is essential with children in whom we see attachment issues. Setting routines and boundaries that are consistent is important. Know that the child will try to control the situation with aggressive behaviour or an excessive need for attention. It is important to have constructive ways to cope with these behaviors. Set clear expectations for the day and specific situations. Use empathy when imposing a consequence for behavior. Stay away from punitive language or punishments and focus on what “to do” not what not to do. Stay calm and avoid separation from you as a punishment (i.e., time out). Model appropriate behavior and emotions. Tell the child they are wanted, loved and safe. Y

Fish Tales
Fish Like Your Job Depended On It BY JOHN PIOTROWSKI
DO YOU EVER GET BACK TO THE DOCK AFTER A FUN AND SUCCESSFUL DAY OF FISHING AND THINK TO YOURSELF — MAN I WISH I COULD JUST FISH FOR A LIVING? HOW MUCH
fun that must be? Well, before you quit your day job, I think you might just want to ask one of our many captains about the real life of a sportfishing charter captain. Ask one of our captains about finding steady clients, keeping the boat running, finding and keeping bait, the rising fuel prices, tackle, reliable mates, good weather and maybe the most crucial part – catching fish every day! You may find a new level of respect for the Captains that make their living on the water. That is a lot to tackle for these hard-working captains who work in an environment controlled by mother nature.
56 pointpubs.com •
POINT! PUBLISHING
But what if you could fish like these captains? What if you knew some of the techniques they use that could help you catch fish every day? What if you could fish like your job depended on it? One of the most commonly used and successful fishing techniques for charter captains that fish along reef lines would be trolling with planers. This technique works to catch fish almost every time. Tuna, kingfish, wahoo, dolphin, sailfish, bonito, jacks and even the occasional snapper or grouper can always be caught. On the surface, it appears to be a relatively simple concept, but below the surface, it is quite another story. What type of rod do you need? How about the reel, line, swivels, clips, shock cord, planner size, bait and how to set and retrieve the rig? The most common setup is a heavy weighted trolling rod with roller guides and a good oldfashioned Pen Senator 6/0 reel with 60 – 80lb braided line. Of course, any of the new fancy two-speed reels will work. In its simplest form, you can just tie a good snap swivel to the tag end of the line. Use a good knot! If you wanted to troll a planer spread like a professional, you could set up (4) of these rods with snap swivels. Now you need the rigs. Go to one of our local tackle shops (listed below) and pick up a couple #2, #4 and #6 planers. Ask for (4) yo yo(s) – they may say something funny like “we only have two working today” but don’t worry – they will know what you mean. Then get a few hundred yards of 60# and 80# fluorocarbon and some really strong smaller swivel clips (spro or equivalent). Ask the tackle shop folks for a dozen or so prerigged planer strip rigs with pretty silver and blue/pink or similar mylar strip baits on double hooks. These will mostly be made >>>

Fish Tales <<< with wire – probably better that way to start. Now you are ready to fish like a pro and catch fish like your job depended on it….almost. Tie a good snap swivel on one end of your 80# fluorocarbon (shock cord) and then tie a small 80# plus snap swivel about 40 – 60’ of fluorocarbon later. Take your #2 planer and clip one end of your fluorocarbon shock cord to the tail end of the planer (opposite side if the ring). Next, hold the planer and your yo-yo in your non-dominant hand and wrap the shock cord around your yo-yo up to the clip. Use tape or a little cut in the yo-yo or a rubber band to hold your shock cord and snap swivel in place. Do the same with your #4 and #6 planer rigs. You are almost ready! Get out on a boat and start trolling over our reefs in 60 – 80’ of water. Set the boat on a straight track at 4 -6 knots. Take out one of your #2 planer and yo-yo rigs and clip the line coming off your rod to the #2 planer on the head ring. Then clip on one end of your shock cord to the tail end of the planer and clip your frozen two hook strip bait with its mylar skirt on the other end. Toss the bait in the water – doesn’t it look good? Let the bait drift back, unwinding your yo-yo until you get to your planer. Set the yo-yo somewhere safe! Now the tricky part. Let a little line off the reel, keeping control of the spool, drop the planner in the water and give it a few little jerks until the planner sets and then slowly let it out. This will be your long planer line – let it out the furthest – pick a distance or use a line counter. Then repeat with your number #4 set up a little shorter and then your #6 a little shorter still — usually, the short line will go through your prop wash. I would start with 1-3 lines until you get the hang of it. Now do a slow snake or tack back and forth from 50-60’ to 350’ and catch fish every time like your job depends on it! Be careful of weeds! The rods will be “diggin” now. This is the saying for the rod bending and shaking as the planer works. Keep an eye on the tips for when they stop diggin you better start winding for the planer has been tripped by a fish on the hook! Keep the boat moving and reel in your fish, rinse and repeat. When you get the planer to the rod tip have a mate with gloves wind your fish in (carefully using the yo-yo or laying wraps on the deck of the boat) and stick a gaff in your fish. “Like a pro” your friends will say! Don’t forget to send the editors a picture! The fishing professionals at Big Dock Tackle, Chaos, Custom Rod & Reel & RJ Boyle’s can help you with the tackle and rigging! The Lighthouse Point Saltwater Sportsmans Association or the Offshore Anglers of Pompano Beach fishing clubs will be happy to entertain you with opportunities to fish like this. John Piotrowsk is president of the Lighthouse Point Saltwater Sportsman’s Association.

Tidbits & Trivia
BY JIM TERLIZZI
Bizarre Holidays YOU WON’T FIND THESE HOLIDAYS ON YOUR REGULAR CALENDAR, SO AS A PUBLIC SERVICE, I PROVIDE THIS INFORMATION SO THAT YOU DON’T MISS ANY OF THEM. March is National Celery Month, National Peanut Month, and “National Nutrition Month. From this, it appears that if you eat celery and peanuts, you have fulfilled your nutritional needs. Mar. 1 is World Compliment Day. Participation is simple: as you meet people during this day, give them a compliment. If you bump into someone you don’t like, give them my fallback compliment: “You have nice posture.” Mar. 1 also is National Pig Day. Take a pig to lunch. Mar. 2 is Be Yourself Day – unless you’re a jerk, then be somebody else. The third of the month is I Want You to be Happy Day. To make my wife happy, I will buy her a new vacuum cleaner. (I’m an incurable romantic.) Oscar Wilde had a quote that fits this day: “Some people cause happiness wherever they go. Others when they go.” The second week of March is National Bubble Week. This is the time to learn all you can about bubbles, including how to make square ones. I use this week to explore the bubbles in a bottle (or three) of Dom Perignon and/or a six-pack of Bud. (A word of advice: Don’t be the ‘bubble’ in a poker tournament.) Mar. 5 is Multiple Personality Day. I don’t need this holiday. I have great conversations with myself every day. I find that I am a great listener.

Shrimp Puttanesca BY MRS. KOSSENFLOFFER
This easy weeknight dinner comes together in minutes. Well, you’ll have to splurge for shrimp that are already shelled and deveined — but it’s worth it for this quick and flavor-packed meal. Puttanesca is a classic tomato-based sauce with olives, capers and anchovies. In this riff on the classic, shrimp stand in for the pasta, and fresh tomatoes brighten the whole shebang >>>.

Add the olive oil to a large saute pan over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant — only 1 or 2 minutes. Add the anchovies and cook until they disintegrate, mushing them with a wooden spoon to speed the process along. Add the tomatoes, olives and capers and cook until they are warmed through. Then add the shrimp and cook until opaque. Taste and add salt and pepper to taste. If you like spice, sprinkle some red pepper flakes over the top. Top with fresh basil and serve with a crusty baguette. Or course, this is also terrific tossed with your favorite pasta. Just remember to salt the pasta water and reserve some of the pasta cooking water to add to the sauce if it is too dry.

What Kind of Wine is That? PICKING POINTERS: PART 1 — LIGHT REDS
BY DAVID EHRENFRIED WHEN CHOOSING OR SHOPPING FOR WINE, THERE INEVITABLY COME MOMENTS WHEN WE LOOK AT CERTAIN WINE BOTTLES OR RESTAURANT WINE LISTINGS AND ASK, “WHAT ON EARTH is this?” This occurs to me often enough, even though I can modestly claim to know a few things about wine. Should you try the wine? Let’s face it, there’s risk, and possible reward, in trying unfamiliar wine. Sometimes we’re surprised by our wine purchases. A wine we thought would be light and easy-going turns out to be something quite different. Some of us have simple strategies for buying wine, such as picking wines with names we can pronounce, labels we like, or what a friend or magazine recommended. It’s understandable that many of us bypass our uncertainties and pick wines we know and are confident we or others will like. My goal here is to reduce some of those wine-picking qualms and provide pointers that encourage trying unfamiliar wines. Not that there aren’t other sources of help when you’re picking wine. Sometimes there are knowledgeable salespeople, and some stores display little shelf cards with lofty ratings or a few sentences about each wine. In restaurants, we can ask a waiter or, in more upscale establishments, a sommelier can explain the choices. If you’ve got your smartphone handy, you can do on-the-spot research, including looking up wineries and winemaker notes. If you shop for wine online, there are often brief descriptions and ratings. Frequently, though, most of us are left to our own devices when picking wine, with a myriad of choices and limited time or knowledge to discern among them. So, in this and some subsequent columns, I’m going to provide some hopefully sensible and straightforward information that might lessen the confusion some of us experience when we’re open to trying something new but faced with many unfamiliar choices. Please note, however, this isn’t a substitute for acquiring deeper wine knowledge and familiarity. That’s the best door, I think, to lifelong curiosity and interest in trying and hopefully enjoying many kinds of wines.

A Brief Guide to Picking Lighter Dry Red Wines The quick advice here identifies important types of wines you might see on a nice restaurant’s wine list or in a store with a reasonably good wine selection. I discuss the wines by country, as they often are organized in stores or on wine lists. I’ll start with wines at the lighter end of the taste spectrum or palette. In next month’s column, I’ll provide a similar survey of mid-weight and heavier and more intense red wines. My classifications aren’t perfect or infallible. With wine there’s always potential for surprise. Some types of wines can be made in lighter or heavier or bolder styles depending on where or how the grapes were grown and how they were made into wine.
So, imagine you’re in a typical wine shop where wines are arranged by region and then by grape or other classification, such as red and white, pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, Riesling, Côtes-du-Rhône, chianti, rioja, sancerre, etc. Every wine you see is somewhere on a spectrum or palette of lighter to heavier in terms of how mild, bold, or powerful its flavors are, how it feels in your mouth and when it’s swallowed, and how much alcohol it contains. Alcohol content is obviously important in wine. It’s one reason many of us drink, but just as importantly contributes to our >>>
perception of how light or heavy, weak or strong wines are and whether we enjoy them or not. These distinctions are among the chief things most people would like to know about a particular dry red wine before they buy it: Is it light, strong, in-between, smooth, tannic, easy-going, or bold and powerful? These differences are probably evident to anyone who has had a glass of full-bodied California Cabernet Sauvignon and a juicy glass of California Pinot Noir. The distinctions are probably less clear to the average American wine drinker picking between a bottle of lighthearted Italian Dolcetta d’Alba and more serious Brunello di Montalcino.
Lighter Reds These wines typically are less deeply colored and have lower alcohol conten t— usually less than 14% alcohol by volume (ABV). The lower alcohol content helps make these lighter wines less strong and powerful. However, these wines can still have robust flavors and aromas, such as those of cherries, berries, and other fruit as well as herbs and punchy spices. Good lighter wines also often exhibit great finesse and sophistication, such as better pinot noir wines from Burgundy, France, California’s Sonoma and Central Coast regions, Oregon’s Willamette Valley, and New Zealand. Lighter red wines may be aged entirely in steel or concrete tanks, or they may be exposed to oak. That helps them take on woody, vanilla, and other interesting scents and flavors. Those aged with little or no oak may be brightly and refreshingly acidic and may even taste good chilled. France The most popular light French red wines in the United States are Beaujolais and Burgundy, named for regions in central France southeast of Paris. Beaujolais is made from gamay grapes that produce light, lower alcohol (13% ABV or less), easy-drinking, and relatively inexpensive wines with bright fruity flavors and very mild tannins. The best Beaujolais wines are from specific communes or villages such as Julienas, Moulin-a-Vent, Fleurie, and Brouilly. They drink well with almost any kind of food, including everyday foods like hamburgers, Chinese take-out, and barbequed ribs. Red Burgundy wines are typically made entirely from pinot noir grapes, which can produce light to almost mid-weight wines
ranging from pleasant, straightforward fruity wines to stunningly beautiful and deeply complex wines with layers of red fruit, earth, herbal and other scents and flavors. Good Burgundy has a welcoming mouthfeel and relatively low alcohol content (usually around 13.5%), along with a nice balance of acidity and mild tannins. High demand internationally, unfortunately, has sent Burgundy prices through the roof. Even basic regional and village wines, usually labeled “Bourgogne,” from the two main growing areas, Côte d’Nuits and Côte d’Beaune, now sell for around $20 or more. The better and top wines with village or commune names like Chambolle-Musigny, Gevrey Chambertin, Pommard, and Vosne-Romanee can easily cost fifty to hundreds of dollars. More reasonably priced Burgundy village wines come from less prestigious areas like Givry, Marsannay, Mercury, and Santenay, which produce many excellent wines. These wines are very food flexible, although an $85 bottle of Chambolle-Musigny probably deserves your best cooking or a special occasion. For lighter reds, also look to the Loire region in western France and the Rhone and Languedoc-Roussillon regions in the south. The Loire produces refreshing chinon and bourgueil, which are made from cabernet franc grapes. (cabernet franc is also frequently blended with cabernet sauvignon to make French Bordeaux and California’s signature red wine.) Chinon tends to be pale red in color and quite light and dry, with herbal-scents and slightly tart fruit flavors. They’re reasonably priced, generally selling in the $10-30 range and taste good chilled. The area of Sancerre, famous for white Sauvignon Blanc wines, also produces many delightful Pinot Noir wines. These are popular as inexpensive table wines in Parisian restaurants. Languedoc-Roussillon makes more wine and more kinds of wine than any other region in France. It’s one of the few places that makes wines entirely or principally from Cinsault, usually a blending grape. The best Cinsault wines are reasonably priced, light but deeply colored, bold-flavored, velvety, and very tasty. Southern Rhone reds are mostly blends, made principally with grenache, syrah, and other grapes. The lighter blends are Cotes-du-Rhone, Ventoux, Lirac, and Vacqueras. These are nicely fruity and earthy, easy-going but characterful wines for everyday enjoyment. They’re plentiful, and many good ones sell in the $12-25 range.

Italy
<<< Four lighter Italian red wines to look for are dolcetta, valpolicella, primitivo, and shiava. dolcetta d’Alba and dolcetta Dogliani are among my favorites for lighter red wines. They’re easy-to-drink wines, made in the Piedmont region not far from where famous barolo and barbaresco wines are made. They’re inexpensive with rich but uncomplicated dark berry, plum, cocoa, and earthy flavors. Also, usually nicely balanced with mild tannins, they’re very food friendly. Valpolicella is a popular red wine from northeast Italy near Verona that’s made mainly with corvina grapes. It’s made in lighter as well as heavier styles such as ripasso and rich, dense amarone. Shiava is a very light red wine with distinctive cotton candy, strawberry and bubblegum aromas that’s made in northeast Italy’s Alto Adige region. Primitivo from Italy’s southeastern coast is genetically the same as California zinfandel but is typically lighter and less bold or expressive. It’s inexpensive and goes with simple Italian dishes, including pizza and meatball subs. Spain and Greece A wonderful lighter red wine from central Spain is bierzo. It’s made from mencia (Joen in Portugal) grapes that can make delightful, characterful wines with lots of black cherry, some plum cocoa and spices, and some licorice. Bierzo is terrific with roasted chicken or turkey, ribs, and many other dishes. Agiorgitiko is Greece’s most popular red. Made in both lighter and denser, more 68 pointpubs.com •

full-bodied styles, it’s typically modestly acidic and tannic, with fruit flavors that range from dried cherry to raspberry, blackberry, and plum jam together with savory spices like pepper, cardamon, and nutmeg.
California and Oregon Pinot Noir is the top light red wine made in the United States. The best are made in California’ Sonoma County and Central and Santa Barbara’s coastal regions and in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Oregon Pinots are arguably more Burgundian in style, notable for nicely balancing lightness, deep red fruit flavors, and herbal earthiness. California Pinots can be a bit more powerful and lush, often having alcohol content in the 14-15% range. There are plenty of delicious bottles in the $15-25 range, but figure to spend more for more complex and memorable wines. Australia and New Zealand If you like Shiraz, Victoria in Australia’s south makes a bright, juicy, lighter style that’s worth a try. Australia’s best Pinot Noir comes from the island of Tasmania. For truly notable and vivacious Pinot Noir that can be lively and fully of red fruit and spicy flavors, go to the New Zealand section when you shop for wine. You won’t regret it. Let us know what you think. Y

WHAT’S IN A NAME BY SAM ROSSER
Many of us run around town without taking the time to learn about the namesakes of our public spaces. I can’t tell you how many times, while stopped at a red light on Federal Highway, I’ve wondered, “Who was Dennis Myers, and why does he have a street named after him?” A few good people have been honored with parks, streets, and even a pier.
KESTER COTTAGES
The Kester Cottages at Founder’s Park is the home of the Pompano Beach Historical Society and a museum dedicated to preserving the history of our region. They were built by brothers William and Stuart Kester after moving here in the 1920s. The brothers went on a spree of home-building, creating a recognizable local style of home that came with then-modern amenities like plumbing and running water. They became so successful that they eventually donated land back to the city, which would become Pioneer park. Only a handful of the cottages remain today.

THE FISHER FAMIILY PIER
Officially named after former Pompano Mayor Lamar Fisher, his family’s civic involvement in the community has spanned more than a century and, as such, bears the family name. The newly-constructed pier is almost a kilometer in length; almost as long as the Fisher family has been active in the community. The family’s involvement began at the very beginning, Clinton Lyons, Lamar’s great-grandfather, signed the articles of incorporation for Pompano Beach in 1908. His grandfather, Louis Fisher, served as mayor as well.

FRANK MCDONOUGH PARK
Like many readers of this publication, I have spent quite a hefty chunk of my days on this Earth at Frank McDonough Park. It’s where countless first goals, touchdowns, and other priceless memories have been made, several of which belong to me. It was named after the late former Mayor Frank McDonough, who served our community for over two decades and was instrumental in our little town’s founding. He moved to what was going to become Lighthouse Point in 1954 with his family and was an avid tennis player.
DEGROFF PARK
This beautiful little sliver of land on the intercoastal waterway was originally just a spoil zone for dredged up waste. The 3-acre plot was named after Peggy DeGroff, who founded the Lighthouse Point Garden Club. Much of the park’s beauty today stems from the work and time of Roy Rogers, who has spent decades caring for the park across the street from his home. In 2019, Roy and his family donated $20,000 dollars to the park for improvements in the memory of his late wife, Susan Mandy Rogers. Butterfly World has also donated plants and wildlife to the serene little park. MARCH 2022 • pointpubs.com

SULLIVAN PARK
Just northwest of the Hillsboro Boulevard Bridge, the 3-acre parcel of land has largely gone unnoticed for much of existence, however, the park went under a nearly $4 million dollar renovation in 2017 and has since become a community hub. The park boasts watercraft rentals, a floating dock, a splash pad, and other play and hangout areas. The park was named after Robert Sullivan, who gifted the land to the city of Deerfield Beach in 1963. He was a prominent real estate developer responsible for several of the developments locals are familiar with like The Cove, Venetian Isles, and Crystal Lake, to name a few.
FRED SCHORR WAY
Photo s by Jeff Graves
This is our first entry on our list that’s not a park, but is by no means less important. After leaving his Director of Engineering position at The Coca-Cola Company, Schorr served as Lighthouse Point’s mayor for more than a decade, securing himself a sterling reputation as someone who gets things done in a considered and respectful way. In addition to his reputation for cordiality and efficiency, he was everpresent at city events, often being the only city official to be at every event of the year. He was often described by his city colleagues as the best boss they’ve ever had.

DAN WITT PARK
As is the case with Frank’s park, I think we’ve all spent another rather large portion of our days at Dan Witt. Not to brag, but I did win the Halloween costume contest one year for my age. Anyway, Witt was a Lighthouse point city commissioner and a collegiate athlete who started Lighthouse Point’s recreation program in 1958. He was actually one of the people to clear the field that became Frank McDonough Park.
DENNIS MYERS STREET
Dennis Myers called the Cresthaven neighborhood his home and spent a large portion of his life successfully trying to make it a better place. He was instrumental in Pompano Beach annexing the Cresthaven neighborhood, in fact. He was also president of the Cresthaven Neighborhood Watch and the homeowners association, along with being a lector at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. After his death, a friend Carol Waldrop successfully campaigned to name a street after Myers; a street he once successfully campaigned to have sidewalks installed on.

anatees have been in the news lately, so we decided to visit Crystal River, home to one of the few year-round populations of manatees that you can swim with in the wild. Many springs hold schools of manatee during the winter months when the creatures congregate in the warmer water from the aquifer-fed springs — but to swim with them is a chilling experience for most people. During the warmer months, most manatees forage in larger bodies of water and are more dispersed, making them harder to find in the wild with open space.
Crystal River is a top choice if swimming with a manatee is on your bucket list. Group tour boats, private guides, observation platforms are all available in Crystal River. On the other hand — world-class dining

and impressive resort hotels? Crystal River is not the place. We suggest a vacation rental house. The hotel offerings are limited and disappointed us quite a bit. There is a Hampton Inn on the highway, just minutes from all the action, but a rental house with a river view is the way to go. The Homosassa Springs and Crystal River area is also home to some near-shore fishing that will not excite avid anglers from South Florida, but could be fun and comfortable for less-experienced anglers. During July through early September, you can charter boats to dive for scallops, which seems popular.
We went to Crystal River with an open mind. The area boasts natural beauty, but the attraction is limited to standard watersports and fishing recreation — and it is an excellent place to see manatees in the wild, which is a big thing. I always clearly remember when I encounter animals in the wild. Recently, hundreds of manatees on the east coast of Florida have died of starvation due to reduced food supply from the effects of pollution. Problems of this kind have not been reported on the west coast. Long live the manatee! MARCH 2022 • pointpubs.com

WHILE YOU’RE THERE The Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park is not worthy of a dedicated expedition, but the ruins provide a half-hour of peering back in time if you are in the area. The days of slavery, sugar cane fields, and this steam-driven mill offer a picture of a time in Florida when men such as David Levy Yulee enslaved over 1,000 people at this farm to grow and process cash crops like sugarcane into syrup, molasses and rum. This mill operated from 1851 to 1964, with a large amount of the product sold to the Confederate Army.
