Artisinal Meatloaf

I feel compelled to admit that I am a huge fan of Dairy Queen. And the one right here in town is the perfect escape on a hot Florida night. It has a drive-thru, which allows me to visit in my pajamas — a simple joy I truly appreciate. However, on a recent trip to our beloved Queen, I noticed a new and somewhat amusing offering: “artisan style” sandwiches. I kid you not. The next natural question is “What are these sandwiches?” First on the list is the exotic chicken, bacon ranch sandwich. Other options include a turkey BLT and an artisan-style Philly sandwich. The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines an artisan as “someone who produces something (as cheese or wine) in limited quantities, often using traditional methods.” I suppose one could say placing chicken between two halves of a sliced roll is a traditional method, but honestly, I think the Dairy Queen marketing gurus are overreaching here. Let’s be real — Dairy Queen is a huge chain, so we’re not talking limited quantities either. In fact, from what I understand of the fast food world, unless a sandwich can be mass-produced, it can’t be profitable. So a mass-produced, artisan sandwich is a true oxymoron. And beyond that obvious contradiction, shouldn’t an artisanal sandwich include ingredients such as foie gras, black truffles, Spanish manchego or an English stilton? Merely days later, I was reading a recipe for braised short ribs served over grits. It was an extremely intricate recipe with instructions and a list of ingredients reminiscent of War and Peace. And then I saw it: the recipe called for artisanal grits. Really? What’s next? Artisanal frosted flakes? And what exactly would happen if I used ordinary grits — or even, heaven forbid, generic grits? Not long after the grits episode, during my almost-daily pilgrimage to Starbucks, I noticed they were featuring “artfully iced” coffee. No one loves Starbucks more than I do, but when we are elevating the act of putting ice in coffee to chill it, well, I think we can all agree, it’s got to stop. Why are we labeling so many things artisanal and why does it bother me so much? Perhaps I should just get over it. I’m somewhat of a food dork and I appreciate foods produced in small batches by people who take extra care and pay special attention to details. But really? Grits? Iced coffee? So when I see even Dairy Queen has hopped on the “artisan” bandwagon, I can’t help but feel as if it’s all a con. I know all foods are not created equal. I realize some grits are mass produced by giant food conglomerates. And I appreciate that somewhere in North America there is an enthusiastic farmer who grows corn from seeds handed down from his great-great grandfather Frederick, who traded fur with the Sioux to acquire the unique strain of corn seeds. And this farmer mills the corn into meal using nearly invisible fairies descended from cumulus clouds that form over the farmland only when the mockingbird sings. But, at the end of the day, it’s just grits. Labeling foods such as chicken bacon ranch sandwiches, grits and iced coffee as “artisan” diminishes the true meaning of the word. Maybe just call them “small-batch” grits. Or “really terrific coffee.” Let’s just reserve the word artisan for truly artistic endeavors. Of course, none of this will prevent me from labeling my mother’s meatloaf recipe as artisanal in the hopes that my kids will finally like it.

If you talk to Todd & Scott Bird, co owners of Paver & Marble Specialists (also known as Superior Power Washing Inc) they want their customers to be ‘more than happy’ with the work they do.

Their goal and business motto is; to design with simple clean lines that will make bold statements, and must function for their clients’ daily lives. This motto and passion is exemplified in the outdoor hardscape design work and remodeling they do for swimming pool areas,

patios & walkways, driveways, water features and anything else you might consider for the outside of your home or commercial space. Being a family owned company, it allows Todd & Scott to be on all job sites from start to finish. They both say, “We provide our customers with very skilled installation

and repair crews. In addition, we complete all projects in a professional and scheduled manner”. The Bird brothers have managed to co own Paver & Marble Specialists for 21 years due to their great communication skills with the client, ensuring that they follow each customer’s vision, making each job unique. Their mantra is “It’s not about getting a lot of work; it’s about doing a great job on each and every project”. However, looking beneath the surface you will see that both Todd and Scott are the product of many years of construction expertise. Their father, Jim Bird has been in the construction business for 40 years, and both sons grew up helping in his business but they both feel that their forte is in outside surfaces and hardscape. They must first understand the client’s needs in order to give each of them something that flows with the landscape of their property. It is something the brothers are both passionate about. “The key to any project is communication. We make sure that all jobs go smooth from start to finish because of great communication”, they explained. Whether it’s small or a large elaborate job, clients rave about the Bird brothers’ ability to create outdoor masterpieces and also be on time with the schedule. (Something which is rare in their industry!) If you talk to former clients you will hear that Todd & Scott are not just talking about it, they mean it, as explained by Edward Salantrie, a Ft Lauderdale based lawyer; “I

recently hired Superior to install a marble pool deck. They had to excavate my existing 800 sq ft concrete deck and extend it to 1,300 sq ft. They also integrated a 75ft retaining wall with a swooping pathway and staircase. In addition, the pool remodel consisted of a new 2ft marble coping around the pool and spa, including new glass pool tile and new Diamond Brite color. This entire project was done within 10 days and transformed my backyard in to a resort setting!! The workmanship and professionalism was remarkable”. Another client, Annemarie Mancini says “I knew from the first visit with Scott that I had made the right choice. He had such enthusiasm and vision for turning an ugly concrete pad into a beautiful brick paved patio. He was in constant communication with me throughout the entire project and the job was started and completed on time, as promised. The crew were professional and took great pride in their work. Thanks to Pavers & Marble Specialists I have the most beautiful patio area that we can enjoy for years to come”. It is also important to know that they are a fully licensed and insured brick paver company and that they offer a 2 Year Warranty on all services and workmanship. Paver & Marble Specialists also do repairs for any pavers, solve any drainage issues, root removal and most importantly protect your new investment with their clean & seal division. Superior Powerwashing also has a special ‘Clean & Seal Green’ process that utilizes stateof-the-art equipment and industrial cleaning solutions that are environmentally friendly. Hot water and steam are used with a rotating surface cleaner to remove and kill mold, clean dirt, remove stains and impurities on brick paver or marble surfaces. Using only the best sealer products to enhance and protect pavers, and apply them with a professional grade airless sprayer that gives precise and appropriate coverage. “Design is our passion and communication is one of our top qualities. The use of Drone’s (aka small Unmanned Aircraft System) for aerial photography and videography (or aerialography) is quickly becoming the standard in Real Estate marketing. As Realtors, our primary function is the marketing of your home to obtain the highest and best price the market will pay. It’s no secret that in today’s world, the search for a new home begins (and continues) on the internet, and as homebuyers, we love to look at beautiful homes. I am excited to announce I have recently become a FAA Certified Remote Pilot. This will ensure all of our listings will include aerial photos of the property and surrounding neighborhood. Due to our proximity to both Pompano and Boca airports, nearly all flights will require permission from Air Traffic Control, but such requests/waivers can be made online and the FAA is working to improve their response/approval times. CityBeat BY MARIE PULEO

Lighthouse Point Police Arrest Animal Hoarder Early last month, television news crews from Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade Counties descended upon Lighthouse Point after the city’s police department discovered that Linda Giaccio, 69, had been hoarding 82 animals in her home at 2230 N.E. 38th St. Officers obtained a search warrant to access the residence after one of Giaccio’s dogs escaped from the backyard earlier in the week and attacked a neighborhood dog as it was being walked by its owner. During their investigation, police gathered evidence that pointed to animal cruelty and abuse. “We were very surprised and appalled by what we saw inside the home,” said Lighthouse Point Police Chief, Ross Licata. “The house was pretty much gutted. There was nothing inside other than bare walls... It was like a place where animals were being stored, and they were in disgusting, filthy conditions.” When entering the premises officials were forced to wear hazmat suits. The animal odor was so strong it could be detected outside the home. Animals were coated with fecal matter, and their bowls were infested with bugs and maggots. There was no electricity or running water. Police removed 72 cats and ten dogs from the house. Of the 72, 12 of the cats were dead, eight of which were found in trash cans on the

side of the house. Since then, a number of the animals have died or had to be euthanized. The remaining animals were turned over to Broward County Animal Control. Giaccio was not at the house at the time the officers arrived. She had been living outside the city for about four years, but had returned a few weeks prior. As a result of news media stories broadcast Sept. 2 when the search warrant was executed, Lighthouse Point police received a tip that Giaccio was in Hollywood, FL. They joined forces with the Hollywood Police Department and found Giaccio in a restaurant where she was taken into custody, said Chief Licata. She was booked into the Broward County Jail on five counts of animal cruelty and held on a$25,000 bond. “We’ve been dealing with this woman for a long time,” said Chief Licata. “She’d been cited over and over again.” In the past, Giaccio had taken the initiative to comply with whatever codes she had violated. “Since she came back to the city, she and the property had been in our sites,” said Chief Licata. “When we were able to put adequate information together to obtain a search warrant, we took the appropriate action.” The police department is still actively investigating the case and will determine whether or not

Proposed Sales Tax Increase

When Lighthouse Point residents go to the polls on Nov. 8, not only will they be voting to elect a new U.S. president, they will also decide, along with voters throughout Broward County, whether or not to approve a countywide sales tax increase from six cents to seven cents per dollar, applicable to the first $5,000 on any single item. The one cent increase proceeds would be split evenly — a half cent will fund countywide transportation projects, the other half municipal infrastructure projects. The two are a package deal, meaning they must both pass to succeed. The increase would raise approximately $300 million in the first year, according to the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization. As proposed, the rate increase would be applicable for 30 years, starting on Jan. 1, 2017, and provide for the creation of an oversight board to monitor appropriate spending of the resulting revenue. The half-cent county transportation surtax would be used to finance projects such as a light rail system in downtown Fort Lauderdale, increased bus services, traffic light syncing and the building of bike lanes. Revenue raised from the half-cent city infrastructure surtax would be shared among the county’s 31 cities based on population and could be used to fund city projects, such as street improvements and new police or fire stations. For the first 20 years, the cities would receive 100 percent of the money, and during the remaining ten years, 40 percent would go to the county. The City of Lighthouse Point has created a list of proposed projects that it would undertake using the money it receives, which includes a new fire station built to withstand a category five hurricane. The city would get $900,000 to $1 million the first year. The project lists for each city in the county can be found online at apennyatwork.com.

Lighthouse Point Post Office To Relocate

The city’s post office, located at 2091 N.E. 36th St., is looking for a new location, either in Lighthouse Point, or close by. At the City Commission meeting on Aug. 23, Mayor Glenn Troast said that, earlier that month the post office had received an eviction notice from its landlord Venetian Isles Shopping Center, which said it had to vacate the premises by Aug. 31. The mayor reached out to Congresswoman Lois Frankel, from Florida’s 22nd Congressional District, and was informed that federal law prohibits the eviction of a post office on short notice. As a result, the post office has been given more time to relocate. “I find it quite distressing that they’ve taken this course of action with the post office,” said Mayor Troast. Several months earlier, the shopping center approached the city with an inquiry about a conceptual plan to expand the Publix currently adjacent to the post office. According to the city Administrator’s office, the shopping center has not contacted the city again regarding the plan.

Under the Sea BY JIM MATHIE

W

hen Stacy Ritter spoke at a joint Chamber of Commerce breakfast for Deerfield Beach and Pompano Beach last month, she had some inspiring words. Ritter is the newly appointed President of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). The number of visitors enjoying our county is at an all-time high, with over 15 million tourists spending time here in 2015, spending more than $14 billion on lodging, restaurants, shopping and entertainment. “Tourism has more of a financial impact on our economy than any other private sector industry in Broward County,” stated Ritter. There are more than 180,000 hospitality-related jobs in Broward County. During Ritter’s speech, she mentioned that the recently installed underwater camera at the Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier is “the most watched camera of all of the sunny.org website cameras.” The sunny.org webcam page is the most visited and shared link where tourism officials post on social media. With a total of 16 cameras available on their website, it appears folks want to watch what’s going on above, and below the ocean. Access to the camera is not only available through sunny.org, but the city of Deerfield Beach website: DFB.City/beachcams. The beauty of the city’s website is you can also access the other two beach cameras: one facing east from the Hillsboro bait house, the other facing west from the end of the pier. According to the city’s spokesperson Rebecca Medina-Stewart, the underwater camera, since it has been operational, is also the most viewed page on the city’s website. Funded in part by the CVB, the city of Deerfield Beach has really showcased the cameras. Their website has been completely redesigned and there’s an app with immediate access to the cameras. Go to the app store and get your InsideDFB app. And not to be outdone, the City of Pompano Beach is including an underwater camera when their new pier gets built in two years.

Behind the Scenes

International Fishing pier having both. A cable is connected to the camera and a wireless connection is used between the bait house and the end of the pier. This type of live streaming underwater webcam uses a pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) underwater camera system. There is a patent-pending CleanSweep™ selfcleaning arm on the glass globe that removes the buildup of algae. Periodic maintenance is needed to replace the cleaning arm and assorted parts. In the case of Deerfield Beach, there is also wave action to consider because of its close proximity to shore. Nothing could be drilled into the concrete pier pilings, so everything had to be secured to the column with a series of brackets, chains, nuts and bolts. So log on, watch the fish swim and remember that somewhere in Peoria, Illinois or Minnetonka, Minnesota someone may be watching those same fish and planning their winter escape to sunny South Florida.

Eye on the Ocean

The Deerfield Beach underwater camera is part of a worldwide network of cameras installed by viewintotheblue.com. The company has additional underwater cameras in Florida at the Bahia Honda State Park and the Dry Tortugas National Park. Other camera locations in the United States include the Frying Pan Shoal Tower in North Carolina, and Channel Islands National Park in California. They also have cameras in the Caribbean including Bonaire and Grand Cayman. There is even an international camera at Gibraltar. And these are all part of a network of a youth-based, non-profit organization calledTeens4Oceans.org.

Mental Toughness BY CRAIG HALEY

E

very martial artist needs to be pushed in order to reach their true potential. They need to train with people better than they are and push beyond what is comfortable. Resistance makes us stronger! Just like we have physical muscles that allow us to do work, we have mental and emotional muscles as well. Not everyone around us is a supportive teammate that gives you an endless supply of encouragement. There are naysayers who will tell you that you can’t do something, that you are crazy for attempting a certain goal, and that you aren’t good enough. Whether you like him or not, Conor McGregor had to be mentally tough to enter his 2nd fight with Nate Diaz after being submitted by him in their first fight. His mental toughness combined with a fantastic game plan led him to victory at UFC 202. Tony Robbins, says you need to stand guard at the door of your mind. We have to be careful who we listen to and who we allow to influence us. Developing mental toughness can be tough, but there are some proven strategies that can get you where you need to be. Here are my “5 to thrive” to develop mental toughness: 1. CHOOSE YOUR FRIENDS. Surround yourself with positive, encouraging people that want to see you succeed. Naysayers are like crabs in a bucket, always pulling each other down. Be around those that motivate and inspire you!

50

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

| lhpmag.com

2. TALK TO YOURSELF. We all talk to ourselves so make sure you are saying the right stuff. I like incantations like,”Everyday in everyway I am getting stronger and stronger. Energy flows through my body in abundance. I am a peak performance martial arts athlete. I set the pace!” 3. TRAIN YOUR BRAIN. Make sure you train those mental muscles. Read books that motivate and inspire you, listen to audio programs that educate and empower you, and watch videos that get you fired up. When you consistently hear a positive message, you will have better thoughts, feelings, take better actions, and get amazing results! 4. PRACTICE THE SHOE RACK THEORY. Train everyday! We all feel better after a great workout. When you come to class, put your shoes and problems in the shoe rack, go to class and have a great time. It’s amazing how those problems have either disappeared or don’t seem nearly as daunting as they did before class. 5. KNOW YOUR WHAT AND WHY. When you have a goal, take a moment and clarify why you want it. The answer to the “why” question is what will drive you to become physically and mentally stronger. The “why” will push you through the difficult times and help you see your goal to completion. Habits we train are habits we gain. These strategies are proven to work, but they must become habit. They must be practiced on a regular basis to become part of you. The magic is in consistency. Consistent actions = Consistent results! Thank you for being a part of the Elite Force family!

Chowder Power

BY AMANDA JANE

I came up with this spicy seafood soup after screwing up a veggie chowder recipe I was working on, inspired by summertime produce. Man, am I glad I did. I used the holy soup trinity of celery/ onion/thyme to start. The vegetables sizzle in bacon grease and butter. Potatoes and water are added and then cooked down to create a starchy, bursting-with-flavor soup base. Then we add our seasonal ingredients: summer fresh zucchini and corn. In my house we are always stacked with seafood. Locally caught shrimp and scallops along with salmon, are just a defrost away. In this recipe I used Key West pink shrimp. I blend 2 1/2 cups of the vegetables to create a thick broth without thickening ingredients like cornstarch. This recipe took about four weeks to perfect after its inception, and it’s one of my favorite recipes I’ve done. Hope you love it.

Spicy Seafood Chowder Makes 6 servings

INGREDIENTS 2 tablespoon unsalted butter 1/2 pound bacon, fat trimmed and meat diced into pieces 2 celery ribs, chopped ½ yellow onion, chopped 1 tablespoon garlic, chopped 1 tablespoon dried thyme Sea salt and pepper

3 large russet potatoes, peeled and diced into small cubes 3½ cups water 1 bay leaf 1 zucchini, peeled and diced 16 ounce corn 16 ounce half and half 1 pound shrimp, coarsely chopped

6-8 sea scallops, coarsely chopped 2 tablespoon Worcestershire ½ tablespoon cayenne 1 teaspoon hot sauce Splash of white wine Parsley for garnish

DIRECTIONS In a large soup pot or dutch oven, melt butter over medium heat. Add bacon and cook until bacon begins to brown, about 3 minutes. Add celery, onions, garlic, and thyme. Season with salt and pepper. Cook vegetables down until they begin to soften, stirring a few times, about 3 minutes. Add potatoes, water, and bay leaf. Season with salt and pepper. Cover and allow mixture to simmer for about 15

minutes or until potatoes are cooked and very soft. *Note: some water will absorb and evaporate- don’t let mixture dry out. Add water in ½ cup increments if necessary. Do not over-saturate, too much water will dilute the flavor. At this point you don’t want much excess liquid. Add in zucchini and corn. Simmer for 5 more minutes until the vegetables are tender. Discard the bay leaf and then transfer 2 1/2 cups of chowder to a food

processor. Puree until smooth. Stir the mixture back into the pot. Add half and half and cook until the soup is heated through. Add shrimp, scallops, Worcestershire, cayenne, hot sauce, and white wine into the soup. Simmer for about 5 minutes until the seafood is cooked and the flavors are robust. Adjust seasonings to your preference (I like my soup extra spicy!) Serve garnished with fresh chopped parsley.

Based in Lighthouse Point, Amanda Jane is the creator of the food blog Seasonally Jane where she shares her love of seasonally inspired cooking through original recipes and photography. Visit seasonallyjane.com for more ideas and recipes.

he Four- Point Inspection is a tool to insure that a property that is being purchased is in good condition. These STORE NAME inspections include Electrical, ADDRESS | PHONE NUMBER | WEBSITE Air Conditioning, Plumbing and the Roof. On the electrical inspections they look at the age of the equipment, the size of the electrical service and whether it has circuit breakers or fuses. They also identify any present hazards, such as exposed / unsafe wiring, open connections, improper grounding, double taps and the brand or model of the panels. Lastly, they look at the wiring type, whether it is copper or aluminum, whether it in conduit or is it what they call Romex, which is a trade for non- metallic sheathed cable (NM-B). If it is in Romex, is it plastic or cloth wiring. Most Real-Estate agents will know about the Federal Pacific and Zinsco/Sylvania panel types no longer being accepted by the insurance companies and the need to replace them. However, they are not responsible for finding all of the issues that could come up on the 4-Point inspection. We are finding that the insurance companies will no longer insure properties with the following issues, unless they are corrected. Fuse boxes will need to be replaced with circuit breaker panels, cloth wiring of any kind will need to be replaced and single strand Aluminum wiring will also need to be replaced or repaired. When the cloth and aluminum NM-B wiring is replaced the Electrical Inspector will want the whole electrical system brought up to code. This will include adding outlets to meet the new spacing requirements. Installing Arc Fault and GFCI protection on all circuits. There are a couple of devices that work to splice the aluminum wires to copper and save the cost of a complete rewire, however we are not sure that the insurance companies will accept this solution. To protect yourself if you are selling your home, you may want to have your own 4-Point inspection done before you list your property. At that point you can choose to make the repairs or raise the selling price to cover the repair cost. Al is a State Licensed Electrical Contractor and owner of Al Siefert Electric. TO THE POINT Legal Matters

Florida Trust WORKS TO PROTECT OF STATE PROPERTY

BY MARTIN ZEVIN

M

any of my snowbird clients own a home in Florida and another state. Some of them have their homestead in Florida; others declare their legal residence in another state. In either case, a Florida Revocable Living Trust is very useful to avoid probate in both states. If you are a Florida resident, you can own your homestead property via a Revocable Living Trust without losing your homestead exemption. In addition, you are eliminating the need for probate when you pass away. You can also transfer real estate owned in any other state to your Florida Trust. Generally, a Florida lawyer will prepare the Revocable Living Trust and Quit Claim Deed to transfer the Florida property into the Trust. If you are a Florida resident, the lawyer will also prepare a new Florida Last Will and Testament called a Pourover Will. This provides for the transfer to your Trust upon your death of any other assets not in the Trust or which do not have beneficiaries already designated. It is a security blanket to cover any assets payable to your Estate, such as insurance or personal injury proceeds, which you could not have anticipated prior to your death. If you are not a Florida resident, you can still create a Florida Revocable Living Trust and execute a Quit Claim Deed to put your Florida property into the Trust. Your Last Will and Testament will be done by a lawyer in the state in which you have your legal residence. In addition, that lawyer can prepare a Deed to transfer the out of state property into the Florida Trust. For Canadian citizens, there are possible tax aspects to be considered before you create a Florida Trust. These should be discussed with your Canadian accountant or tax attorney. In general, you will have to weigh the tax consequences versus the money and time that your heirs would save by avoiding probate in Florida. Another favorable factor in creating a Revocable Living

The Revocable Living Trust is recommended by most lawyers over a Deed which includes names of other persons, either as joint tenants, tenants in common or a Life Estate Deed. Once another person’s name is on a Deed, there are potential risks to you and your property. These include the possibility that the other person may undergo a divorce, bankruptcy, have a judgment against that person, or die before you or with you in a common accident. It may also affect your homestead exemption. All of these risks should be discussed with your attorney before deciding to put someone else’s name on your Deed. By contrast, the Revocable Living Trust eliminates those risks, since no other name is on the Deed. You simply transfer it from yourself to yourself as Trustee of your Trust. Martin Zevin is available to discuss wills, trusts, estates, probate and is available for free consultation regarding personal injury claims or car insurance coverage. TO THE POINT Tidbits & Trivia

Secrets to a Successful Marriage BY JAMES TERLIZZI October marks my wedding anniversary. I have been married for 57 years. If I had committed murder, I’d be out by now. My wife hates that joke, but she tolerates it because it makes other people laugh. We have lasted this long primarily due to our initial agreement to each assume certain responsibilities. Under the agreement, my wife makes all of the small decisions and I make all the big ones. For example, she decided how many children to have, where we should live, which house to buy, for whom to vote, when and where to vacation, etc. I decide what to do about ISIS, whether or not quantum mechanics accurately makes the case for parallel universes, and how to deal with Vladimir Putin. I used to handle the finances but, for some strange reason, my wife decided she didn’t like my two-pronged retirement plan: hitting the Powerball jackpot, or winning the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes. Here’s another tip: If your wife cooks (mine is a great cook), never complain about a meal or the next thing she makes will be reservations. There is one exception. It is permitted to complain about liver. This has a religious connotation, as every year I give up liver for Lent. For all of you husbands out there, I now will reveal, at the risk of great physical harm, a closely-guarded secret: All women take a course called “Refrigerator Camouflage.” They can put an item in the fridge that you will never find. It is designed to make you feel helpless and dependent. Don’t fight it. You cannot win. A few days ago I searched the fridge for two hours looking for a slab of leftover meatloaf, without success. Then the conversation went like this: Me: “Did you eat that last piece of meatloaf?” Wife: “It’s in the fridge.” Me: “Can’t find it.” Wife: “Pull out the egg basket. Behind it is a tub of hummus. Under the hummus you will find that I cut up the meatloaf

and put it into a smaller container that says ‘Jello’.” When we were younger, my wife was sensitive to cold, while I was always warm. That has now reversed. Warning— keep the temperature where she wants it. I once tried playing “thermostat roulette,” changing the temperature without telling her. Within 10 seconds her heat sensor went off and I have the scorch marks to show for it. Here are some telltale signs that your marriage may be in trouble: Men: You come home from work and your clothes are on the front lawn. Your wife keeps playing over and over a message on your answering machine from “Bambi’s Escort Service.” You find in the medicine cabinet a bottle of Succinylcholine and a hypodermic syringe. Women: He leaves and doesn’t come back. Finally, if you men want to preserve your marriage, there is one rule that is inviolable: Always put the toilet seat back down.

TO THE POINT Parental Conrols

Kids and Divorce BY JILL SELBACH

Wow! Your eyes lock on to someone like you’ve never seen before. Your heart is pumping, your stomach has butterflies, you see him and you are instantly drawn to him. Soon after, you begin a relationship and you are so excited to start your lives together. You get married, have a couple of kids, life is grand. Then, it is not so grand. The issues seem too difficult to solve. You can’t seem to find your way back to where you once were. Divorce is something that many couples face today (although, divorce rates are a little less than in previous years). The crude annual divorce rate is currently around 3.6 divorces for every 1,000 people in the U.S., regardless of age. This break down in

families causes all sorts of dilemmas. Divorces produce emotional turmoil, especially when children are involved. The protective instincts of parents emerge, as do behaviors that are not necessarily characteristic of the people involved. Children are often the innocent bystanders to pay the price. This is never the intent of any parent, but often happens to be the outcome. Divorce introduces vast changes into the lives of children, regardless of age. The people coping with the most changes in the wake of divorce are the children. Children move house to house, on a schedule that suits parents. This

62

frequently disrupts education and causes anxiety. Being away from one parent for a period of time is disconcerting. Many times children blame themselves when parents breakup, and parents should be mindful of this. There are many things parents can do to make a divorce easier on children. When parents can have a civil, businesslike relationship where parenting is concerned, children thrive. Time-sharing schedules are only the tip of the iceberg. A time-sharing schedule that works best for the children, based on the needs and ages, must be determined. Selecting a mode of communication that works for each parent needs to be chosen (i.e., email, text, etc.). Each parent will have their own parenting style, but basic rules and structure (e.g., bed time, homework, curfew) should be consistent between households when possible. Contact information for both parents should be given to school, extra-curricular activities and any services that are used by the children. This will allow communication to be given to both parents and relieves one parent from the responsibility of transmitting volumes of information. Divorced parents need to communicate information that pertains to the children. Some examples of important information would be doctor appointments, illnesses, rewards and consequences. Speak respectfully about the other parent in front of children; damage to child-parent relationships can be a direct result of disrespectful talk. Be open to compromise and discuss issues upon which you disagree. If the parental relationship is too tense or conflict-prone, bring in a third party to help; hire a therapist or enlist the aid of a parent coordinator. A parent coordinator is a neutral party who has been trained to help parents in highly conflictual divorces come to successful resolutions. In my experience, parents and children who seek out professional consultation early on in the divorce process fair the best. Therapists can bring up situations that typically cause the most conflicts and help create strategies to make the transition easier for all. Dr. Jill Selbach is a licensed clinical psychologist. TO THE POINT Cantankerously Yours

Trip to Chicago BY WENDELL ABERN

Dear Frequent Flyers, et al, I am writing this a few weeks before my semi-annual trip to Chicago to visit kids, grandkids and old friends. Years ago, at the height of my “Mad Men” career -- prior to computers, teleconferencing, Skyping and all those other technological advances -- I traveled a great deal. Client meetings. Pre-production meetings. And a whole mess of other dumb meetings. All over the country. Frequently to New York. Even more frequently, to California, where most of the commercial shoots took place. At the airport every week. Usually twice a week. Not a big deal. But now that I’ve reached octogenarian status, these trips to Chicago have become monumental. I start worrying about all of the details months ahead of time. In fact, I booked this September flight last February. Spirit Airlines. Good ol’ Spirit Airlines, where I have accumulated more than 65,000 traveler miles. What this means at Spirit is that my free round-trip flight only costs me $134. And just to make sure nothing untoward has happened since I booked this trip, I have checked my reservation every three days for the past month. Plus, I keep making lists, the most important of which is a compilation of things to do prior to my trip. Which I started four months ago. And every week or so, I e-mail a copy to my kids to see if they can think of something I forgot. About a month ago, my

daughter called me. “Dad,” she said, “I can understand why you’d want to have the car serviced before you come to Chicago. But why do you have to have your little guest-room-also-serving-as-an-office painted before then?” “Because I don’t like the way it looks.” “So? Why not have it done when you return, when there’s no arbitrary deadline?” “There is no such thing as an arbitrary deadline, and I don’t like it the way it is!” “Okay. Just wanted to check and see if you’re as receptive as ever to someone else’s ideas. It’s comforting to know nothing has changed.” A few days later, my son called. “I want to know what the penalties are,” he said. “What? What are you talking about?” “Your list. It’s headed, ‘Absolutely Imperative: Must be Finished Before Trip to Chicago; Severe Penalties if not Accomplished.’ I want to know what penalties. And who inflicts them.” “Oh, that. I just like to remind myself of what’s important.” I stopped sending that list to my kids. But there are other issues, which I find curious, if not strange. I find myself fretting over things that would not even have occurred to me years ago: [CONTINUED ON PAGE 68]

Better not eat too much of that; don’t want to get sick before my trip. Better drive carefully; don’t want to have an unnecessary accident before I go to Chicago. I’m thinking like an 85-year old man, and I’m only 83! Couple of weeks ago, I called my daughter to give her my itinerary. Time to finalize all dates and times. “Dad, don’t forget to pack some sunscreen. You know, it’s September, and it’ll still be hot and sunny here.” “I know. I lived there for 56 years.” “I’m talking about packing! When you came in May, you forgot to pack socks.” “That’s just because I rarely wear socks down here.” “Dad, don’t forget to pack socks.” “I won’t forget socks already!” “And a razor.” My kids never forget anything. Meanwhile, I find myself constantly distracted by this trip. I lack focus on just about everything. For example, I go to my condo’s pool twice a day ... for my morning cigar and afternoon cigar. I consider the pool my office. It’s where I do all my writing and reading. During the summer, I’m the only one there during the week. And because our pool is not heated, it’s like my own private pool from September through most of May. Well, last week, I was preparing for the pool while wondering how many long-sleeved shirts I should pack for my trip. And instead of coating myself with sunscreen, I sprayed deodorant over my entire body before I realized what I was doing. I tried covering it with the sunscreen, but in the ensuing aroma war, Old Spice roundly defeated Banana Boat. And of course, it was the only day all week that Heidi was there. Every condo association has one truly beautiful woman. Ours is Heidi, who is less than half my age and six inches taller than I am. (When I tried to convince her last year that five-foot five is the new six-foot three, she only laughed at me.) When I walked in and peeled off my pool shirt, she took one whiff and said, “Isn’t it a little early for you to be visiting the local brothel?” When I explained what I had done, she said, “Good lord, one would think you’re 85 years old.” Next week, I have to have the car washed. And get a haircut. And make and freeze some dinners for my return. And shop for ... wait a minute! I’m panicking again. I have almost two weeks. I check my list of what I must do in order to prevent severe penalties: I’m doing fine. I relax, breathe in and have another cup of coffee. Now all I have to do is haul out my list of what to pack for my trip, add socks, and go to the pool for my morning cigar. Twenty years ago, when my husband Richard and I started looking for a home, Lighthouse Point seemed like a good bet. It was smack in the middle of our two jobs, on the east side of town, picturesque and family-friendly. As we searched for a house, I remember several realtors telling us the same thing: “Once you move to Lighthouse Point, you won’t ever leave.” At the time, I thought the idea sounded somewhat creepy and a touch reminiscent of the cult classic film “The Stepford Wives.” Flash forward to 2016, and now that I’ve lived in Lighthouse Point for nearly 20 years, I get it. In today’s high-tech, fastpaced world, this little town we all call home is a throwback to a simpler time. Even with magnificent,

waterfront mansions and mega-boats, there’s still an “I’d-rather-be-in-flip-flops” attitude. It’s like Mayberry with yachts. You’ll often spot kids on their bikes, fishing rods in tow, out for a simple good time. Head out to eat at any one of our city’s restaurants, and chances are you will see a familiar face. It’s hard to put your finger on exactly what makes Lighthouse Point special — which is how we came up with the idea for this feature article. A million different factors give this town its charm. Of course, a million would be too big a task. So, here we give you: 25 things we love about Lighthouse Point. —Susan Rosser

Lemonade stands

Lemonade: a refreshment, a coolant and delicious summertime beverage, usually sold by children in rinky-dink stands on street corners. Back when I was a boy, I had a monopoly on the Dan Witt area. My family had a lemon tree in the back yard, which provided enormous fruits that were as large as grapefruits. No 8-year old could compete with my low prices and freshly squeezed lemonade. Eventually, the feds showed up and cracked down on my hard-earned, lemonade empire. —Sam Rosser

Pink Church name change

The Bench

at the end of Sample Road

Sample Road stretches from the Everglades in the west, to Lighthouse Point in the east. At the end of the line, right here on the Intracoastal Waterway sits a lone bench. At times you can spot young children with their parents learning to cast a fishing rod, or even a few teenagers finding a quiet place to “chill” and actually speak to each other, in person. On any given day, it’s as if a Norman Rockwell illustration has come to life.

Sometimes you have to go with the flow, and that’s exactly what First Presbyterian Church of Pompano Beach did. For years, everyone has used that nickname–The Pink Church—so much so, that many people never knew or could remember the Church’s true name. According to Wendy Hunt, business manager at The Pink Church “We are rebranding ourselves as the Pink Church since that’s what everyone calls us.” The new sign was anonymously donated by a church family.

Officer Paul For over 35 years one Lighthouse Point police officer has been there for all of us. He has been there to resolve disputes, to provide comfort in times of need, coordinate our Citizen Observer Patrol, and quite importantly, has had his watchful eye on our parks during youth sporting events watching over our children and keeping them safe. Who is this officer; it is none other than our very own Paul McCormick. Since April 1, 1980, April Fool’s Day, Paul has been on duty to protect and serve the residents of Lighthouse Point. Why do we love Paul? There are countless reasons. Paul is a friend and confidant to our children, who know they can go to him and ask any question or for help with any problem. When one talks with Paul, he gives you his undivided attention and makes you feel that you are the only person in the room. He listens intently and provides down to earth advice. Paul is also constantly watching and observing and there to help prevent and solve crimes, he is no one’s April Fool! From our parks to our streets, Paul is there to be our friend, confidant and protector. —Mayor Glenn Troast

A Beacon in the Night red solo The Hillsboro lighthouse is an icon in our small city of Lighthouse Point. When my family (my parents specifically) uprooted everything I knew and moved a whopping two miles across town, my life flipped upside down. Everything was different. I didn’t know left from right. But the lighthouse kept my bearings in check. When I was wandering the streets as the hoodlum I am, and didn’t know how to get home— the lighthouse brought me home.—Sam Rosser

Tuna Wontons

at the Nauti Dawg

The tuna wontons at the Nauti Dawg are a star of the menu. Look around on any given evening and you’ll see order after order leaving the kitchen. This appetizer is great to share with friends or it it’s a great alternative for a light meal. Just in case you are one of the few Lighthouse Pointians who has not tried them, the dish is four fried and crispy wonton wrappers topped with seaweed salad, tuna tartare, roasted pepper aioli and wasabi aioli. If you are counting calories, the kitchen will switch out the crispy wonton for a cucumber slice. When you ask people around town to list some of their favorite food items at their favorite local joints (which we did), these tuna wontons are almost always on everyone’s list.

Tillotson Square

For many years, the Spieker family who own the Lighthouse Point Marina dreamed of developing Tillotson Square. “My father, Don Spieker tried to develop it 15 years, but couldn’t get City approval,” said Maureen Canada, who oversaw the project. “We started meeting with architects to put together our dream. By the time Tillotson Square became reality in 2001, the city gained over $1 million of infrastructure as part of the development agreement. Streets were paved, parking lots added, and electrical lines were installed underground. The 21 units that make up Tillotson Square sold out quickly. The pastel colored townhomes add Caribbean flare to the marina area. Frankly, we’d like to see more homes with this color scheme throughout the city.

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

It may seem as if the oak trees in town have always been there, just waiting for someone to build a city around them. But in actuality, the town came first and our founding-Lighthouse Point-fathers had the foresight and wisdom to line our main thoroughfare with sprawling oaks. Palm trees may have been the obvious choice. After all, it was the 1950s and South Florida was filling up with northern transplants who no doubt were enamored with the exotic palm. Yet, there is nothing more beautiful about Lighthouse Point than the oak trees along Lighthouse Drive, each tree growing towards their counterpart tree across the street, providing a natural awning for all to enjoy.

Darlene AT THE LIGHTHOUSE POINT YACHT & RACQUET CLUB

Our focus group of locals, discussed many staff members at local businesses who serve and support residents. There wasn’t a formal poll but certain names received more praise than others. Diane Nardone just seemed to be loved by everyone. When told of this she responded, “So my quirkiness is finally paying off?” A Chicago native with 30 years in South Florida, Darlene has been serving at the Lighthouse Point Yacht & Racquet Club for three years. She also holds the title as the best female dart player in the Broward County Dart Association. Darts are a passion but children really light her up and she very much enjoys babysitting her grandchild. “I love kids. I guess that’s why I act like one.”

Traffic cameras

It’s easy to compare the City’s traffic surveillance system with the Orwellian “Big Brother” of literary fame. The system’s cameras record traffic at every entrance to the city. All vehicle’s license tags are scanned automatically and checked against state records. An alarm alerts officers on duty when a driver with an outstanding warrant has entered the city. Our favorite story involves a local resident who reported his fishing tackle was stolen off his boat. He reported the approximate time of the theft. Officers reviewed the camera footage to see a car with approximately the same number and type of fishing rods protruding from it’s rear window. The car’s tag was researched. Officers were dispatched to the address on record. . . and retrieved the stolen gear from the living room.

Feeding THE FISH

There’s most likely a smart phone app where you can feed fish; but kids in Lighthouse Point actually get out from behind their screens, head down to the marina, buy some bait, throw it in the water and watch actual, real, live fish jump for it.

Barmuda Triangle

Lighthouse Tree Topper Lighthouse Point’s twist on the traditional star on top of the Christmas tree, the Lighthouse A ’Glow tree topper is a special tradition for the city at the annual celebration when friends and neighbors gather for outdoor festivities to kick off the holiday season with a concert, a tree lighting ceremony and of course faux snow.

People love to celebrate in this town and they don’t need much of a reason. Perhaps you’ve heard of the Barmuda triangle. In case you are unaware, the “barmuda triangle” consists of the bars at the Lighthouse Point Yacht & Racquet Club, Cap’s Place and to keep it real, Bonefish Mac’s. Of course one is a private club, but why not join? It’s good to keep your options open. LHP YACHT CLUB

Halloween Happening This is perhaps one of the most fun events of the year. Children and adults alike can be found decked out for Halloween at Dan Witt Park. A costume contest, bounce houses, bungee apparatus and much, much more can be enjoyed. It proves that even adults can enjoy getting dressed up with their kids, and some take it seriously for the costume contest.

material. The dedicated library staff fills Dixon Ahl Hall to the brim with books, records, DVDs, CDs and more. The best part is Saturday afternoon when the sale is quickly coming to a close. Each person has the opportunity to buy a plastic bag for one dollar and fill it with anything they want. You could fill five bags if you really wanted to and it would still only cost you five bucks. What’s not to love about that?

Beef Wellington

AT LE BISTRO Luckily, we don’t have to travel far for a truly decadent meal. Le Bistro’s version of the classic English dish, Beef Wellington is a preparation of sautéed sliced mushrooms, well trimmed filet mignon seasoned and seared, wrapped up and cooked in puff pastry served with a red wine bordelaise sauce and served for two or more. You know what they say: “Sharing is caring.”

Ricardo AT PAPA’S RAW BAR

Valet parking attendants rarely achieve celebrity status. But Ricardo Ferreira from Papa’s Raw Bar is different. His bright smile and hearty welcome are his trademarks. He never uses paper tickets as he remembers every person, their car and where he parked it. A professional soccer player from Brazil, he knows how to move fast and use space on the field—or parking lot. His many fans don’t know he’s been in the country for 13 years, has been married for 20 and his daughter is studying political science at the University of Florida. “I make people feel special but it comes from my heart,” sums up his great attitude toward his work.

Tom Greene’s

fishing lure trick

It’s almost a local rite of passage. All Lighthouse Point children must go to Custom Rod & Reel to have Tom Greene cast a fishing lure at their finger from 30 feet away. Or cast the lure into the mouth of a mounted largemouth bass. Or one of a few other tricks Tom has mastered over the decades. Whichever trick he does, the kids are usually amazed.

Hearts of palm salad AT CAP’S PLACE

When your waitress shows up at your table with a giant palm trunk, it becomes abundantly clear that they’re pretty proud of their hearts of palm salad over at Cap’s Place. As well they should be. Most of us have had the canned version. But the difference is similar to that of canned peaches versus grabbing a fresh peach off a tree, biting in and ruining your outfit because peach juice has dribbled down your chin and beyond. The salad at Cap’s Place is straightforward—the main ingredient is the true star. “An awful lot of people call and ask if we still serve the hearts of palm salad when they call to make their reservation,” says Tom Hasis, owner of Cap’s Place. The question is: can you really call yourself a Floridian if you’ve never had fresh hearts of palm?

Keepers Day

Sure, the casual observer will see marching bands, politicians, boy scouts and service groups walking or riding in sometimes silly ways. Some could say the whole idea is a bunch of nonsense. Parades are essentially a social agreement. Everyone commits to participate by either being in the parade . . . or watching it. A small town parade has always been the annual opportunity for everyone in town to see the people and organizations that matter for a wide variety of reasons. Parades squeeze a year of progress into one hour. Neighbors get to see Boy Scouts who recently earned their latest ranks as they march by with Troop 238. We all get to see these boys as they become young men. We see all the local kids grow up as so many are in the parade. The Soroptimists get some recognition for making significant contributions to the community . . . and for being fun too. Our elected officials are seen by everyone in town. If you see them at the grocery store or diner—you may want to approach them because you recognize them. In the parade, everyone sees the name on a sign and an actual person just a few feet away. They become more approachable and I contend this is far more important than most realize. Is the Lighthouse Point Keeper Days parade a spectacular

entertainment experience? Maybe if you are 7 years old; but hardly if you are 70 . . . but the contract is the same. You may not be in the parade because you are not heavily involved in the Trinity Church, St. Ambrose School or the Exchange Club but the people in all local organizations work selflessly to educate our children, inspire congregants or serve the less fortunate and they deserve the opportunity to show you something of who they are and perhaps inspire you to participate with them. How many young boys have become interested in Cub Scouts or Boy Scouts from seeing the troop walk down Lighthouse Point Drive? Parades matter. Maybe I’m over-dramatizing the importance of the parade, but there is value to organizations in the act of showing the community who you are. Preparations build teams and parades provide a showcase. My wife Susan and I walked the parade route together a couple years ago with a dozen or so Exchange Club members and youth members from Zion and Cardinal Gibbons high schools. We saw neighborhoods of residents assembled at the ends of their streets. I imagine this is the only time of the year when this happens. There can be a very fine line between silly and important and it’s often hard to see. Hope to see you around town but if not, certainly at next year’s parade. —Richard Rosser

THERE’S NO SINGLE RECIPE FOR RETAILING SUCCESS IN THE INTERNET AGE, BUT SOME BUSINESSES ARE FINDING WAYS TO COMBINE THE ADVANTAGES OF THEIR LOCAL BRICK-AND-MORTAR SHOPS WITH THE BENEFITS OF ONLINE SELLING AND MARKETING. BUT HOW CAN A LOCAL SHOP COMPETE WITH MONSTERS LIKE AMAZON? SEVERAL LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS SHARE THEIR STRATEGIES.

Super Tonia Ryan

A

NATIONAL

bit of show-biz glamour is coming to Pompano Beach with this month’s grand opening of Inance women’s clothing boutique. Teresa Giudice, star of the reality TV series “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” will be making a special appearance at the grand opening party, which takes place on Oct. 7 from 7 to 9pm and is open to the public. The event is part of a strategy by Tonia Ryan — the store’s founder and a 15-year Pompano Beach resident — to make a major splash and build brand recognition for Inance at a national level. Ryan already has a bit of a head start. She is the owner of a successful e-business that sells Inance Skincare products, which have been featured on networks like Bravo, OWN, E! and the Hallmark Channel. Inance Skincare, which Ryan launched in 2012, also sponsored the Oscars Celebrity Gifting Suite two years in a row. The Inance store, however, is a new venture Ryan hopes will gain just as much attention as her skincare products. Over the years, California-born Ryan has made numerous contacts in the fashion and entertainment industries, which inspired her to branch out the Inance brand into women’s contemporary clothing. For the past 18 months, Ryan has been working with over 200 manufacturers around the United States to create the two clothing lines she will feature in her boutique. She designed and chose the fabrics for the majority of the items herself and has built up an inventory of over 6,500 pieces to sell on the floor. “Since we’re doing our own manufacturing, everything is so fresh and new,” said Ryan, who does most of her sourcing and manufacturing business long distance.

Ryan uses FaceTime to talk to her manufacturers, who show her their products virtually. They mail her fabric samples, then work with her to tweak things to her liking. Of the two lines she’s created, The Inance line is higherend, designed with busy women in mind (especially working moms) who want fashion and comfort without much time or effort. The second line, called Smazy by Inance, is a contemporary line with a lower price point geared toward younger women. Both lines will offer plus sizes. All the styles, which include dresses, casual wear and active wear, are South Florida-driven. “I know we’re going to be known as ‘maxi-dress heaven,’ because we have so many maxi-dresses,” said Ryan. The new Inance store also features handmade bikinis and lingerie from a Los Angeles-based manufacturer whose celebrity customers include Beyoncé, Madonna and the Kardashians. Customers will be able to purchase the merchandise either in-store, or on the company’s website (Inance.com), with free one-day shipping in the state of Florida. Inance’s physical store consists of approximately 2,500 square feet of selling space, and another 700 square feet in the back where internet orders will be processed. The new store is “a totally different concept than what people in retail are used to,” said Ryan. Instead of mannequins, there are TV monitors to show images of models wearing every item in the store. Sales associates have mobile scanners, which allow them to ring up sales anywhere in the store. There’s also a selfie machine where people can take photos and share them with their friends.

Tonia RYAN “It’s just a new, more personal, technology-driven way to be able to help the consumer,” said Ryan. For now, Ryan doesn’t plan to sell her products on any other websites, such as Amazon; she prefers to work directly with her customers and not through a third-party company. Ryan expects her online customer base to be mainly in New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Texas and South Florida, and predicts her online sales will far outweigh her in-store sales. Ryan, who has a computer science degree, is “e-commerce driven,” and plans to raise awareness of the Inance boutique outside the local area through social media, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube, all of which she handles herself. Having Teresa Giudice at the Inance grand opening is part of her social media strategy. “There are a lot of new, fun ways on the internet that you can reach out to the consumer,” said Ryan, who even posted

a YouTube video of herself modeling the Inance bikini line, so people could form a connection to her and the product. Ryan plans to partner with some celebrity friends and other social media influencers like Giudice. By the end of the year, she plans to post YouTube videos of celebrities shopping at Inance. Ryan will also be organizing an event with Gretchen Rossi, who appeared in “The Real Housewives of Orange County” reality TV series, and whose handbag line will be carried in the store. If the Pompano Beach store is a success, Ryan would like to open a second brick-and-mortar store in South Florida. “Pompano as a city is coming up,” said Ryan. “Especially for this stage of my life, being married, having children, I find that it’s a wonderful place to live, and I think it’s a great flagship location for what we’re doing.” OCTOBER 2016 | LIGHTHOUSE POINT

Having an Amazon store opens her up to selling across the country, and also keeps merchandise flowing through her physical store, which helps her local customers. “They always get to see new things, and the store doesn’t become stagnant,” said Walsh. Last month, she expanded her presence even further, and opened an Amazon store for the markets in Canada and Mexico. “Making those changes has enabled me to keep a brick-and-mortar,” said Walsh. “Brick-and-mortar is difficult. There are a lot of expenses, and with people buying online, it really has changed the whole face of retail.” Walsh also sells on a third party website called Shoptiques, which is made up of higher-end stores from key areas in the U.S. and Europe, and has generated some international sales for her boutique. Walsh hand picks all of her merchandise herself. She spends at least three weeks out of the year

B

ody & Soul Boutique, located in The Shoppes at Beacon Light in Lighthouse Point, has been a local mainstay in women’s upscale fashion for almost fifteen years. Millie Walsh, the boutique’s owner, has kept her business on a steady course, navigating it through ups and downs in the economy, and when necessary, reinventing it. “Having a background in accounting and advertising has helped me in business,” said Walsh. It’s made her a “little bit more savvy” when it comes to budgeting and promoting her store. Although Walsh has cultivated a loyal local following, it was Walsh’s intention from the beginning for the boutique to have a national presence. Within a year of its opening in 2002, her website (shopbody. com) was up-and-running, and people around the country were buying clothing and products from it. In recent years, Walsh has also started selling her products on third-party websites. Rather than compete with a huge player like Amazon, Walsh said she took the approach of “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em,” and created an Amazon store where she sells some of her more well-known brands to the U.S. market. It was a long process that had to be approved by Amazon. She doesn’t sell the items at a discounted price, but she does ship them for free directly from her boutique.

attending clothing shows in Miami Beach, Palm Beach, Atlanta, New York and Las Vegas, where she places orders four to five months in advance. She also attends gift and jewelry shows, and a lot of local clothing line representatives come to see her at her store. “People don’t realize how much time is spent in acquiring the inventory,” said Walsh. “It’s pretty intense.” Some stores will look at products online and order over the internet, but Walsh likes to see and feel the piece in person. “Material is very important to me,” she said. Where an item is made is also important. She strives to sell only clothing made in North America. At least 90 percent of the merchandise is made in the U.S., and a couple of lines come from Canada. When purchasing her products, Walsh thinks of her local clientele first. If she sees something she loves, she’ll think, “Who can I picture wearing this of my own local customers?” Then she’ll ask herself, “Will this sell well online? Will I be able to get good photography for it? Can I put it on my own website, or will I be able to put it on Amazon?” If she can put it on Amazon, she’ll increase her quantities to make sure she has enough for her local customers as well. Right now, she estimates that 75 percent of her sales are local, and 25 percent online, but her goal is for them to be fifty-fifty, not because her local business will go down, but because she’s anticipating that her online presence will be that much more. Walsh said that the top way people outside the local

Emily Caponera

S area find her is through Instagram, then Facebook and Google searches. She also finds that e-mail is important, and through an e-mail marketing tool called Constant Contact she lets customers know when a sale is going on, or sends them a birthday certificate. In the beginning of next year, she plans to start advertising her website around the U.S. in print publications that focus on women and fashion. Last year, Walsh made her website mobile friendly, which not only makes it easier for customers to place orders using their cell phones, but also helps bump her website up in Google searches. The hard thing about selling around the country, Walsh said, is that her biggest competitors are the brands that she buys from. Most of them have their own websites, much bigger advertising budgets, and they sell direct. Her local audience is very loyal, but she said she can’t expect people in other parts of the country who don’t know her to be loyal to a small boutique. “I just have to be there alongside them,” said Walsh, “and hope that people find me too, and that once they’ve been to my website and like the personal service, and see that they can get other things from me, they’ll come back.” Knowing how to transition over the years has enabled her to stay in business. “It hasn’t been easy,” she said, “but if you don’t change and bend with the times, you’ll break. I’m bending, for sure.”

ince June 2015, Lighthouse Point has been home to Merry Love Joy, a children’s boutique offering stylish clothing, toys and custom party goods. “I knew there wasn’t a children’s store in our local area and wanted to fill the void between Boca and Fort Lauderdale,” said store owner and Lighthouse Point resident Emily Caponera. From its inception, the Merry Love Joy brand has been reaching more than just a local audience. The storefront actually evolved from an online business that Caponera started in 2014. The original concept for the brand was “Your Party in a Package” – custom-themed packages filled with everything needed to put together children’s birthday parties, from invitations and thank you notes, to party hats, tablecloths and costumes. The individual package items, like the princess dresses and pirate outfits, became such bestsellers that the business focused more on those, and eventually turned into a children’s boutique. “It’s nice to still have the national platform with a website,” said Caponera. “I get a lot of international customers as well.” To promote her business, social media has proven to be one of her most valuable tools. Her efforts to raise awareness of her brand on a national level began when she joined several buy/sell/trade groups on Facebook that were specific to the product brands she carried. She forged relationships with women in the groups, which usually have 5,000 to 10,000 members from across the country. Once they became familiar with her store, they helped spread the word about her website and trusted reputation. “I built relationships that way, and then the business grew kind of organically,” Caponera said. She also uses Instagram as a marketing strategy, which she said is a good visual medium to show off clothing and styling

and get people interested in the brands she carries. Currently, she has 29,700 Instagram followers, not just in the U.S., but in locations all over the world. Her brand recognition gets a boost from a national magazine called Babiekins, which is distributed to Target and Barnes & Noble. It sometimes features the clothing she carries, and credits her store for it. Caponera’s online business (merrylovejoy.com) accounts for about 20 to 25 percent of her sales. National sales are in locations all over the country, but California has a particularly large customer base, and a lot of customers are from Indiana and Utah. At least five to 10 orders a week are shipped to customers overseas. Caponera’s international customer base includes a lot of Australian customers because she carries quite a few Australian brands. She also has customers in Asia, the Middle East and several European countries, mostly Great Britain, Denmark, France and Spain, because she carries a lot of Spanish products. Caponera sells her own customized handmade party supplies, which are under the Merry Love Joy brand, on a third-party website called Etsy. Although they account for just a small percentage of her sales, Etsy uses layers of advertising to put her products out to Google, which helps attract a larger audience to her brand as a whole. She doesn’t sell any of her other products on third-party websites like Amazon, because the brands she carries stipulate in their contracts that, in order to avoid over-saturating their market, they don’t want to be carried online by a retailer. “I don’t really compete with Amazon,” she said. “I would say people who are going to Amazon are looking for a different product than what I’m carrying.” What sets her apart from Amazon, she said, is that she offers free shipping nationally, and does personalized styling for customers, even long distance. “We’ll work with our customers and snap pictures from afar, show them different looks to put together, and help them if they’re doing a special occasion, so they’re getting one-on-one service.” Caponera finds the brands she carries through Instagram, networking, talking to her local customers, and working with reps over the phone. These brands have a built-in following, and are carried only in select shops. When picking her products, her primary focus is her local customers, like making sure fabrics are the right weight for Florida. Some items she features only in the boutique, and not on her website, so there’s a bit more of a mix in-store. Even as she strives to grow her brand’s presence, both nationally and beyond, she never loses sight of her local audience. “I think there’s something really special about having a local business,” she said. “Especially a small mom-and-pop, because there aren’t too many of them out there. So I really try to give the local area something special.”

Al STEPHENS Al Stephens

S

ome business strategies are hatched in a boardroom, while others, as in the case of Al Stephens, can start as an idea scribbled on a cocktail napkin. Stephens, who owns Al Stephens hair salon in Pompano Beach, was out having a drink with the president of Intercoiffure, an international organization of independent hair salons. The two men were discussing ways to promote the organization. That’s when Stephens came up with a plan: Why not do a photo shoot in Cuba? The photos from the shoot would go to the national trade magazines, and Intercoiffure would gain exposure and recognition. Stephens helped put together a team of some of the top talent in the business, and earlier this year, headed to Havana for what Stephens says was the first photo shoot in Cuba to be conducted by a group of American hairdressers. “It started out as just a photo shoot for a magazine, but it turned out to be a whole cultural experience,” said Stephens. “We used all local models, and really got involved with the people.” The models were outfitted with clothing and jewelry by two local Cuban designers who wanted to be part of the collaboration. Stephens and his team prepped their models at Arte Corte, the only beauty school in Cuba, and had the students assist them with some of the smaller tasks. “It was a great experience for these kids to work alongside some of the best hairdressers in America,” said Stephens. “They were like sponges, and were in awe of us. It was extremely rewarding to be able to share everything I know with them.”

It was only by partnering with the beauty school that the hairdressers were able to travel to Cuba, because in order to get their visas, there needed to be some type of cultural exchange. The beauty school only had a few antiquated blow-dryers, so before going to Havana, Stephens called a supplier in the U.S. who donated 75 professional-grade blowdryers, curling irons and flat irons, which were left behind for the students after the photo shoot. Stephens chose the streets of Old Havana as a backdrop for the shoot because of its “raw” nature. He wanted to shoot beautiful girls against what were once beautiful buildings. “I wanted to create a contrast,” he said. It took hours to choose 18 models from among the almost 200 who showed up for the casting call, which was held in one of the city’s few grand hotels. “It was absolutely nuts,” said Stephens. “I never saw anything like it.” Going to Havana gave Stephens a new perspective on Cuban culture. “I was amazed,” said Stephens. “Cubans are happy, grateful, fun-loving people. They have very little, but the little they have, they really enjoy.” In collaborating at an international level, Stephens earned global recognition for his local business. The resulting photos were featured on the cover of American Salon earlier this year, and will appear on this month’s cover of Modern Salon, both of which are distributed worldwide. Another shoot for Intercoiffure is in the works. This time, Stephens plans to shoot inside Alcatraz. The theme: “criminal glam.”

Sadly, you can’t make a meal out of chimichurri, so ask for it on the side with whatever you are ordering. You won’t regret it. 721 N. Federal Highway, 954-427-6000 $$ Ocean’s 234. The entrées are served with your choice of two side dishes. The spaetzle (German noodles) are a real homemade treat and not to be missed—throw a little of that brown gravy on them and they could be a meal unto themselves. review

The Foundry is a cornerstone of the new and improved and way hipper Pompano Beach. The décor is truly factory-inspired chic with exposed air ducts, complemented by brick and dark wood tones. In fact, it almost feels like you are back in some secret Chicago speakeasy located in the back of an actual foundry. And let’s face it, everything is more fun when there is a touch of secrecy attached. While the vibe is distinctly old school, the menu is quite modern with various offerings drawing on influences from around the globe. With it’s eclectic menu, The Foundry is a great choice when your friends can’t decide what they feel like eating. With a full raw bar, small plates, salad options, pizzas and several full-blown entrées, there is something for everyone. And while the menu is varied, they manage to pull it all off — everything we’ve tried has been up to snuff. Full disclosure: we are fans of small plates and sharing, so this is truly our kind of place, and we’ve been back several times. The last time we were there, we tried the sea scallop crudo special, which was spot on: a lovely combination of thinly-sliced, raw scallops and fresh citrus. From the regular menu, the sushi stack is a great place to start: seasoned sushi rice, tuna, salmon, avocado and cucumber, mixed with kimchi mayo and a few tempura flakes for a little crunch. It’s almost too pretty to eat. Almost. We devoured it. For something on the lighter side, the beet and citrus salad is a super star and a perfect way to start your meal. It’s marinated red beets, local citrus, baby arugula, fresh herbs and crumbled feta cheese, with a toasted hazelnut vinaigrette. It’s light, yet packed with flavor. For something with a little more heft, the burrata appetizer is a great choice. It’s locally-sourced burrata, with traditional basil pesto, heirloom tomatoes, a crumbling of olives for a little briny accent, all served with ciabatta toast. Other small plate options include the shrimp and lobster toasts, and the barbacoa toasts — both are great for sharing. If you are trying to impress your date, head to the back of the restaurant, sit at the raw bar and order the seafood tower, which includes colossal shrimp, oysters and clams on the half shell, half a lobster, ceviche and snow crabs. But don’t worry, if you’re more of a straight shooter, there’s a great burger with irresistible fries. However, the Foundry burger with red onion marmalade, melted gruyere and thick-cut bacon is the way to go.

Financial Resolutions for the New Year

TIRE STORES

It’s time for New Year’s resolutions. This year, why not make a few financial ones? For starters, resolve to boost your contributions to your retirement plans, such as your IRA and your 401(k). These tax-advantaged accounts can be good options for your retirement savings strategy. Also, try to reduce your debt load. It’s not always easy, but the lower your debt payments, the more money you’ll have available to invest. Here’s another resolution: Build an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a liquid account. Such a fund will help you avoid dipping into long-term investments for emergencies, like a new furnace or major car repair. Another key resolution: Make sure your protection needs are being met with the proper amounts of life and disability insurance. Finally, resolve not to overreact to market volatility. You’ll help yourself greatly by following an appropriate investment strategy in every market environment. Work to turn these resolutions into realities. Your efforts could pay off well beyond 2014.

CAR WASH CORNER Now is the perfect time to stop by and clean that dirty car at Mr. Squeaky’s award winning car wash!

Everyone loves Mr. Squeaky Car Wash, including Cassie and Troy Ganter- Owners, Papa’s Raw Bar, Lighthouse Point (papasrawbar.com)

MR. SQUEAKY CAR WASH is owned and operated for the past 10

years by a Lighthouse Point family. Owners Richard and Lynn Sasso, both attorneys, left the day to day practice of law to launch Mr. Squeaky, with the goal of making Mr. Squeaky one of the best car washes in the nation. Mr. Squeaky has been voted “1 of the Top 50 Car Washes in the USA” by Modern Car Care Magazine, the only South Florida car wash to receive this honor. From top to bottom, Mr. Squeaky is a family business. Their two children, Stella and Tyler, along with thousands of other kids visiting with their parents, love the multi-sensory experience of the 135’ long car wash tunnel that includes colorful soaps, a high pressure Arctic Blast rinse, soft cloth scrubs and Tornado Dryers. With washes starting at just $9, including unlimited FREE use of vacuums, there is no true competitor in all of South Florida. From Buicks to Bentleys, every car is treated with white glove service that has made Mr. Squeaky famous and the go-to place for hundreds of thousands of raving fans. Lynn Sasso explains the philosophy at Mr. Squeaky: “We wanted to create a family-friendly car wash. Our goal is to give each customer a squeaky clean car and a smile on their face!”

Developed, owned and operated by the Sassos, a Lighthouse Point family.
