In our new world of social distancing, you may find yourself a touch stir crazy. With cooler days not too far off, now is an excellent time to explore a local spot to enjoy our natural habitat. Grab a friend and take a stroll through the park or head out solo for a little dose of inner peace.

A last minute stop at the grocery store seems to be a luxury many people are trying to avoid these days. Enter frozen seafood. Although some may have turned our noses up at this, a bag of shrimp in the freezer can be a lifesaver when everyone asks, “what’s for dinner?”

The Last Resort

Marie Puleo reports on a month that included multiple incidents for the Lighthouse Point Police, including an armed robbery at the Publix in The Shoppes at Beacon Light and a deadly car accident on Federal Highway.

Lighthouse Point Police Face the Challenges of Multiple Incidents in an Unusual Month LLast month was marked by two high-profile incidents that occurred in Lighthouse Point in less than 24 hours — both with a connection to the Publix at The Shoppes at Beacon Light, and two women who worked together at the customer service counter. One of the women was shot

In addition, an incident with a lower profile took place on the same day as the Publix shooting, and another one less than a week later. “That weekend was very challenging for our agency because we had multiple incidents that were very demanding on our workforce,"

non-fatally during a burglary of the store on a Friday night, and the other woman was killed in a brutal car crash on Federal Highway the next day. “We don’t have a lot of violent crime in our town, which is why Lighthouse Point is such a special place,” said Lighthouse Point Police Chief Ross Licata," but on occasion, these things happen, and we're prepared for them when they do.”

said Licata, "but I’m extremely proud of the job that our officers did. We have an outstanding working relationship with our partners at BSO in Pompano, and they were quick to provide assistance when we needed additional resources.”

PUBLIX ARMED ROBBERY AND SHOOTING

On Sept. 11, just after 9pm, the Lighthouse Point Police Department

The Lighthouse Point Police and the Broward Sheriff’s Office at the scene of an armed robbery and shooting that left one Publix employee wounded. Chris Peskar for Lighthouse Point magazine

responded to the Publix at The Shoppes at Beacon Light (2450 N. Federal Highway), in reference to an armed robbery. A 43-year-old female Publix employee who works at the store's customer service counter had been shot by a 20- to 30-yearold black male suspect who fled the scene just before the police arrived. According to Lighthouse Point Police Chief Ross Licata, the suspect came in the store and meandered around for a while, waiting for the right opportunity, and then walked up to the customer service counter. Brandishing a handgun, he demanded money. He jumped over the the counter gate and ordered the female employee behind the counter to go into the back room to open up the safe, holding her at gunpoint as he followed her in there. While she was trying to open the safe, which was taking a while, the suspect shot her in the lower leg, possibly because he got impatient. The safe was never opened, and the suspect did not get any money. He ran out of the backroom, jumped back over the counter gate, >>>

<<< and raced out the front door of the store, still brandishing his handgun. There were customers in the store when the incident occurred. The Lighthouse Point Police Department conducted an overnight search for the suspect with the assistance of the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Aviation and K9 units, but the suspect was not found. The shooting victim was transported to the hospital. According to store management, she received an entry-exit wound to her leg; the bullet went in the back and came out the front. She was in the hospital for a couple of days, and is eventually planning to return to work. The FBI is assisting the Lighthouse Point Police Department in the case, said Licata. "This was a violent crime at a major corporation in the state of Florida, so they offered their services, and they are assisting us in the investigation," said Licata.

FATAL CAR ACCIDENT ON FEDERAL HIGHWAY

On Sept. 12, at 12:43pm, Barbara McCarthy, 68, was traveling north on Federal Highway. When she got to NE 41st Street, near the Vintage at Lighthouse Point townhomes, she proceeded to make a left turn to cross the southbound lanes of Federal Highway and head west. Her home was just a few blocks away, adjacent to North Pompano Park. At a speed of almost 100 mph, a 2017 convertible Rolls Royce traveling on Federal Highway in the center southbound lane broadsided McCarthy’s blue 2004 Toyota Camry and pushed it over 200 feet south.

The Rolls Royce veered to the west, went over the curb and the sidewalk, hit a retail plaza billboard, a concrete pillar and then a building. Both vehicles were totaled. According to police records, the driver of the car, David Eugene, 30, of Monsey, New York, had a blood alcohol level of 0.312, which is almost four times the legal limit. Riding in the Rolls Royce with Eugene were Jasmine Herring and Jessica Therasmond, both 26 years old. The Lighthouse Point Police Department, BSO deputies, the Lighthouse Point Fire Department and the Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to the call. All four individuals were transported to Broward Health North to be treated for their injuries. McCarthy was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. Eugene and his passengers sustained injuries that were not life threatening. After being treated at the hospital, Eugene was booked into the Broward County main jail with a bond of $15,000. He was charged with 18 counts, including vehicular

At the time of the accident, Eugene was staying at a two-story, Mediterranean-style vacation rental house on NE 28th Avenue at the north end of Lighthouse Point. An associate of Eugene, named in the police report only as ‘Felix,’ was also staying at the house. It was not mentioned if the two women involved in the car accident were staying there as well. The Rolls Royce was rented by Felix, apparently for photographs they were taking at the house. Felix told the Lighthouse Point police that Eugene took the vehicle without permission when he was sleeping. When Felix found out that Eugene had been involved in the car accident, he called the man he had rented the vehicle from, Michael Soto of Pembroke Pines, to report it was stolen. Soto, the owner of the car, is the reported victim on the police report. BSO traffic homicide detectives assisted the Lighthouse Point Police and have taken the lead in the criminal investigation. The Lighthouse Point Fire Department had a fire engine and two rescue trucks on the scene of the accident, and a total of six personnel, including Driver Engineer/Paramedic Nick Palmisano. Palmisano said the Lighthouse Point crew was able to use its recently purchased batteryoperated hydraulic extrication tools (known as the “jaws of life”) to quickly free McCarthy from her car, begin treatment immediately and transport her to the hospital, >>>

The fire department’s old extrication equipment required a lot of set-up time because it used a generator, and hoses that had to be unwound and hooked up to the tools. Using the new battery-operated tools, the team was able to extricate McCarthy “probably within less than five minutes of being on scene,” said Palmisano. “We got her into the truck and provided some treatment for another five to eight minutes, and then got on the road. We were at the hospital between 1pm and 1:15pm.” McCarthy had multiple injuries to her upper and lower extremities, to her torso and her head. She did not have a pulse. The crew provided treatment for cardiac arrest related to traumatic injuries. When McCarthy got to the hospital she briefly regained a pulse. “After doing an incident debriefing, we’re confident in knowing that we provided Barbara the best care and the best chance for a positive outcome,” said Palmisano. The Lighthouse Point crew initially focused most of its attention on McCarthy, while the Pompano Beach Fire Rescue helped the passengers in the Rolls Royce. The Lighthouse Point crew used the jaws of life to extricate the driver of the Rolls Royce, who was stable but in and out of consciousness, according to Palmisano. Lighthouse Point Fire Chief Shawn Gilmartin said: “These situations show the good working relationship between the Lighthouse Point Fire Department and the Pompano Beach Fire Rescue.”

TRUCK GETS TANGLED UP IN UTILITY WIRES ON LIGHTHOUSE DRIVE

BURGLARY AT PACKY’S SPORTS PUB

On Sept. 11, at about 12:30pm, an 18-wheeler moving truck driving along Lighthouse Drive got caught on some low-hanging utility lines, just north of Dan Witt Park. The truck ended up pulling the wires down, and the road was blocked for three hours, causing a major traffic backup. The police department had to barricade the area and divert traffic until AT&T came and removed the

lines from the roadway. Lighthouse Point Police Chief Ross Licata said that because it wasn’t clear at first if the downed lines were just telephone lines or power lines, they had to use “an abundance of caution” to make sure the scene was safe before they allowed pedestrian and vehicular traffic to go through. AT&T had been notified by the public works department that the wires were hanging down too low. No damage was done to the truck or any other property, except the utility wires. Licata noted that 18-wheeler trucks are allowed on Lighthouse Drive.

On Sept. 18, at about 4:30am, the Lighthouse Point Police Department, with the assistance of BSO Aviation, conducted a burglary investigation after a male subject gained access to the roof of Packy’s Sports Pub. The man climbed up a ladder he had found at the back of the building, then broke into the roof and came down inside the restaurant. He was observed on the video surveillance looking for money in a cash register drawer. He took the cash register drawer out and threw it on the floor, apparently not finding any money. The man only spent about a minute inside the restaurant before fleeing out the front door, which activated the alarm system. The man wasn’t caught and the investigation continues.

AN UNUSUAL MONTH

Last September was a “very unusual” month, said Police Chief Licata. “These aren’t the kind of cases that happen here in Lighthouse Point routinely,” said Licata. “They’re out of the norm, but we step up to the challenge of dealing with these things when they do occur and we’re confident that we’re going to bring these cases to a successful conclusion.” Y

City’s New Fire Station and Community Center Are Heading Into Permitting Phase The city’s bond projects for a new fire station and emergency operations center on Sample Road and a new community center at Dan Witt Park are moving into the permitting phase this month, according to city administration. The permitting process is expected to take four to six weeks to complete for both projects. The next step after the permitting phase is for the contractor to begin construction. Last month, documents were being finalized to establish the guaranteed maximum price provided by the contractor, Kaufman Lynn Construction, for the cost to build the fire station and community center. Kaufman Lynn Construction, the firm the City hired to serve as the Construction Manager at Risk, has been working with Currie Sowards Aguila Architects – as well as William Gallo, of Gallo Herbert Architects, who was hired to serve as the City’s representative – to make sure the bond projects are delivered within a guaranteed maximum price (GMP). At its Aug. 25 meeting, the City Commission approved a GMP amendment and a not to exceed amount of $10,147,566 for both the fire station and the community center combined. The GMP provided by Kaufman Lynn for the fire station was $7,620,377. This amount is below the estimate of $8,138,467 provided in the 2018 G.O. Bond, even though the plans now include a large diesel fuel tank that will provide the ability to fuel vehicles on site, which wasn’t originally in the scope of work. The GMP provided by Kaufman Lynn for the community center was $2,527,189, which is approximately

30 pointpubs.com •

POINT! PUBLISHING

$1,057,000 over the 2018 G.O. Bond estimate of $1,470,147. The increase is due to unforeseen increases to the scope of the project, including having to raise the building 3.5 feet higher than originally designed in order to meet new Broward County requirements for flood elevations. Also, during discussions among City staff, it was determined that the community center should function as an additional emergency operations center for the police department, which would require the community center to be constructed to withstand a Category 5 hurricane. it was also determined that the community center will need a new transformer for sports lighting. Due to the fire station project coming in under budget, the proposed GMP for both the fire station and the community center combined is approximately $116,191 under budget. The GMP includes a 3% contingency, with 1.5% for design changes and 1.5% for construction issues. In addition, the City has accrued approximately $274,000 in interest towards the Bond. This accrued interest and planned contingency would allow for the upgrade of the community center. The City Commission expressed support for

Rendering of The Lighthouse Point Community Center

constructing the community center as a Category 5 structure. If the finalized GMP is the same or less than the not to exceed amount, the mayor has the authority to signoff on the amount and it does not need to go back to the City Commission for approval. As soon as the GMP is finalized and Kaufman Lynn submits the required documents to the Building Department to begin the permitting process, Kaufman Lynn will propose a price (not a GMP) for the three other bond projects, which are a new public works administration building just north of Dan Witt Park, the renovation of an existing public works building to be used for fleet maintenance, and the buildout of the second floor of the library for use as a community room. If the City is satisfied with the proposed prices, Kaufman Lynn will do the projects. If not, the projects will be put out to bid. Construction for the fire station is expected to take one year. Kaufman Lynn is proposing to finish it in late 2021 or early 2022. The community center is estimated to take about 260 days to construct, with completion proposed for early 2022. Y

Ibis Bridge: Completion Date Gets Pushed Back Again The project to replace the Ibis Bridge, located on Lighthouse Drive (NE 23rd Avenue) between NE 29th Street and NE 30th Street, began on Nov. 4, 2019, and was initially expected to be completed in fall 2020. The estimated completion date was subsequently changed to late 2020. Now the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) anticipates the project will be completed in early 2021. The construction activities scheduled for this month are pouring the concrete for the pile caps of the piers at both ends of the bridge, and the start of the roadway construction. Lighting, irrigation, signing and pavement markings still need to be completed. Last month, the bridge piers, wing walls and drainage system were under construction. The driving of 38 concrete piles into the bedrock, which heightened noise levels and vibrations, was completed in June. The original contract time for the project was 349 calendar days.

Several factors have extended the project duration, including holiday breaks and inclement weather, as well as unforeseen issues such as COVID-19, according to FDOT. FDOT does not include estimated days for weather and holidays in their estimated construction time for their construction projects. As of mid-September, a total of 41 weather days and 19 holidays had been granted to the contractor. Weather days are given when the contractor’s critical operations are impacted at least 50% of the day due to inclement weather. Per FDOT, the holidays observed during construction are federal holidays, including Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day (the Wednesday immediately preceding; the Friday, Saturday and Sunday immediately following), and December 24 through January 2. FDOT is carrying out and funding the construction of the new bridge at an estimated cost of $2.4 million. The new Ibis Bridge will have a concrete barrier wall on either side

of the bridge, as well as a concrete safety barrier to separate the 6-foot sidewalk on the west side of the bridge, which is an improvement over the open railing system of the old bridge, built in 1950. The additional sidewalk approaching the bridge will be 5 feet wide. There will be new pedestrian facilities to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Per the city’s request, the new bridge will be 10 inches higher than the old bridge to account for sea level rise. Y

Twin-Tower Project Coming to Pompano A large-scale residential, hotel and commercial project planned for 3350 E. Atlantic Boulevard, on the southwest corner of Atlantic Boulevard and A1A in Pompano Beach, is moving ahead after years of being on hold. The project, called Atlantic 3350, was given approval for development in 2012, but that approval has since expired. A site plan application for Atlantic 3350 was resubmitted earlier this year and is currently going through the Pompano’s review process. The resubmitted site plan is consistent with the original 2012 site plan, with some updates to current standards. The project consists of one 19-story hotel tower >>>

Marine Life Artwork By Dennis Friel is Planned for Pompano Bridges The recently revamped Atlantic Boulevard Bridge features marineinspired murals done by local artist Dennis Friel. Now, there are plans for some neighborhood bridges in Pompano Beach to be adorned with Friel’s artwork. A number of bridges are being replaced or improved with money from the city’s G.O. Bond, and the plan is for these bridges to include marine life graphics created by Friel. The bridges that are being replaced or improved with G.O. Bond funding are the McNab Road Bridge, the SE Fifth Avenue Bridge, the Terra Mar Bridge, and two bridges in Palm Aire over the C-14 canal. The SE Sixth Terrace Bridge in the Garden Isles neighborhood is being rebuilt with funding from the city’s capital improvements program, but is also targeted to have Friel’s marine life artwork. The graphics for each bridge will be designed to meet localized field conditions. Still, the idea is for the artwork to be placed either at street level on both entrances of a bridge or on the railings, or possibly both, according to Horacio Danovich,

the city’s capital improvement and Innovation District director. The artwork on the bridges will be enhanced with lighting. The SE Fifth Avenue Bridge is expected to start construction first, possibly in January 2021.

Artist Dennis Friel at the Atlantic Boulevard Bridge Joe Yerkovich for Pompano! magazine

Danovich said the goal is to eventually carry over the theme of marine-related artwork to the Hillsboro Inlet Bridge and the NE 14th Street Causeway Bridge, but funding for that would not be available for three or more years. Y

The Fisher Family Pier Is Getting a New Lightning Protection System A lightning protection system is being installed on the new Fisher Family Pier to protect the $11.5 million structure from damage. Since the opening of the reconstructed pier in May, two incidents of lightning strikes have caused damage, according to Horacio Danovich, the city’s capital improvements and Innovation District director. The first lightning strike hit one of the pier’s concrete pylons and traveled through to one of the lights, damaging a graphics panel. The lightning also traveled to the electric room and damaged the Ethernet, causing the surveillance cameras to stop working and a loss of Wi-Fi. The second lightning strike damaged another of the pier’s graphic panels.

The new lightning protection system consists of 10 air terminals (lightning rods) placed on the pier’s shade structures and six air terminals on the roof of the bait and tackle shop, along with grounding equipment. The air terminals dissipate lightning to less susceptible areas, such as the ground. Each of the eight lifeguard stands on the beach will also have an air terminal and a grounding plate. The cost of the new lightning protection system is $30,200. In addition to the shade structures, Wi-Fi and bait and tackle shop, amenities on the new higher and wider pier include benches, fishing stations, splinter-free railings, marine-related artwork, pedestrian lighting and an underwater camera. Turning 65 ?

Let’s talk about Medicare. If you’re approaching your 65th birthday… Are you starting to think about Medicare? Are you prepared to make decisions about your Medicare coverage? Do you even know what Medicare is? What it covers and what it doesn’t cover? Do you know about all the different Parts of Medicare (Part A, Part B, Part C, Part D)? Do you know your options, such as Original Medicare, Medigap Plans, and Medicare Advantage Plans? Are you still working and covered by an Employer Health Insurance plan? Do you know what to do? It can be very confusing. Especially with paid celebrity figures on TV telling you “what they did”. (Sure they did, wink, wink, elbow). There’s A LOT TO KNOW, and the time to learn is BEFORE you turn 65 (preferably 5 or 6 months before, if not sooner). Fortunately, I CAN HELP YOU before you get suckered into calling “that number on your TV screen” and talk to some 25 year old in a call center who’s under pressure to sell you something just to make their weekly sales goals and bonus. My name is Philip Alsten and I am your neighbor here in Lighthouse Point. I have lived here since 1999 with my wife Serena and our two children, Bryce and Paige. I am a 1982 graduate of The University of Florida, a Florida Registered Pharmacist (PS19628) and a Florida Licensed Life and Health Insurance Agent (W588288). To assist you in understanding Medicare, I have put together a website, where I present the information in simple ways. The website is: TrustedMedicareAdvice.com As a pharmacist, I am an educator who explains information to patients with the goal of achieving positive health outcomes. As an insurance agent, I take the same approach. NO SALES PRESSURE, just information to help you make the best, informed decisions for YOUR situation. I AM HERE TO HELP YOU. Personal Development

Be the Person You Want to Be Now BY CRAIG HALEY

I RECENTLY HEARD THE STORY OF A SUCCESSFUL MAGAZINE ENTREPRENEUR AND HOW HE REACHED SUCH A HIGH LEVEL OF SUCCESS. When he was a young boy, his dad left his family, leaving only the boy and his mom to make ends meet in New Jersey. The boy struggled at school, yet his mom wanted him to go to college. That meant the boy had to take the SATs. The boy was not very motivated to take the test since he was basically failing out of school. He took the test and got the results. He was shocked! He got 1480 out of 1600. That is nearly genius level! When he showed his mom, her initial reaction was she thought he cheated. That was impossible, though, with the scantrons and different versions of the test. When the boy went to school the next day, he started thinking of himself as a 1480 student. He started paying close attention in class, doing his homework, turning it in, and studying for tests. Because of this newfound focus and confidence, he stopped hanging out with his old friends and wasting time. He went on to a community college, then on to Wichita State to get his bachelor’s degree. From there, he went on to an Ivy League school to get his MBA. After receiving his MBA, he went into the magazine business and became a successful editor and entrepreneur. More than twelve years later, he got a letter from Princeton, where he initially took his SAT test. Apparently, every so often they would go back and review their test-taking procedures. They found that the year that boy took the test, some of the kids were sent the wrong results. He was notified that he did not get 1480. He got 740. When asked about this mistake all these years later, he said, “Most people think my life changed when I got the 1480, but it didn’t. My life changed when I decided I was going to start being a 1480 person.” What the man realized was his life changed when he took on

the behaviors of a 1480 person. He started working harder, paying close attention, doing all his work, stopped wasting time, etc. For any of us to reach the next level, we need to start acting like that kind of person now. In other words, you have to work as if…you are a high-level CEO, industry-leading salesperson, or millionaire entrepreneur. It is not the success that comes first; it is the behaviors that lead to success. What behaviors can you change to get to where you want to be? If you want to be the best spouse and parent, how does that person greet his/her spouse? How do they act during family time? How much time do they allocate to spend with their family? If you want to be a seven-figure earning business leader, what books are you going to read? How will you greet your team of employees? How will you present your ideas to your team or potential clients? How prepared would you be? The “ACT AS IF” philosophy is powerful, and it puts you on the fast track to success and achievement. Just remember, change the behaviors first, and the success follows! Sending wishes of health, wealth, and happiness your way! Quirky Quinoa & Papa Pandemic BY MARLENE R WOLF, MD, FAAFP

LEMON POPPYSEED QUINOA MUFFINS — SOUNDS WEIRD BUT THEY ARE YUMMY! AND WHO IS THIS QUINOA ANYWAY? Quinoa is a quirky super-food packed with health benefits. Kris Gunnars, a nutrition researcher, ,notes that quinoa has "8 grams of quality protein per cup" and is an "excellent plant-based protein source" with nine essential amino acids. This true superfood is frequently on my food shopping list and is easily procured during Papa Pandemic, unlike some grains who shall remain nameless. (We all remember the empty shelves at the start of the pandemic.) Many believe that quinoa is a grain, but it is actually a seed. An article on Healthline.com refers to quinoa as a "pseudo-cereal." Get Psyched

Silver Linings AS I WRITE THIS ARTICLE, WE ARE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR WITH VIRTUAL CLASSES. I HAVE SEEN THE STRESS MY JUNIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE FRESHMAN are enduring. My son will not enjoy driving himself to school for the first time. Pulling on campus alone into his parking spot and walking onto campus for his junior year. My daughter will not live on campus, attend a live sorority rush, meet new people in classes or walking on campus. On the flip side, I see the anxiety of a teacher who has taught with great confidence, building over his 29 year career in a classroom. Now, this year the environment has dramatically changed. The use of technology to teach takes center stage. This was an amazing source of anxiety for my husband. So much so that despite thoroughly enjoying his job and the kids he teaches, he seriously considered retiring. Some good things have come out of this pandemic. I have seen how my husband's friends, colleagues and our children came to his aid. He shared his lack of technological knowledge, and we had several people working hour after hour with him to get him up to speed. These teachers were incredibly stressed but found comfort in each other as they figured out the best way to deliver the information they were entrusted to do. Relationships have become closer as we share our vulnerabilities. Usually, when asked how things are going, we reply with the obligatory, "good." Especially in a work environment,

most people's motto is "show no weakness." Sharing our concerns with others is essential in building connections and deepening relationships. We somehow think it bolsters our self-esteem to report to others how great our lives are or how well our kids are doing (take one glimpse at social media). Sharing our thoughts and fears is very helpful in working through emotions. Set yourself up to have a good experience sharing your feelings. Pick the right person. When you reach out to a friend, first make sure they have time to listen to you. This pandemic has left many people feeling lonely and isolated. Even if you are not in person, you can build or strengthen a relationship. Give what you want to receive. Ask others how they are doing. Be a good listener. Ask questions to clarify what the other person is thinking and feeling and let them know you are present. Give them your undivided attention. For many of us, the pace of life has slowed down. We are not running from activity to activity, and long commutes to work or school have stopped. We can use this time for personal growth, building and strengthening relationships within our families, neighbors and friends. Hopefully, we will see some benefits emerging from these past months, where life has drastically changed. Y Dr. Jill Selbach is a licensed clinical psychologist. Tidbits & Trivia

Your Hor(Ror)Scope BY JIM TERLIZZI

DUE TO THE COVID-19 VIRUS, THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL (CDC) HAVE MANDATED THAT ALL HOROSCOPES NEED TO BE CHANGED. AS A PUBLIC SERVICE, HERE ARE THE NEW GUIDELINES: LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Time to get a new face mask, but don’t settle for one of those bland ones. Put some color in your life, particularly Caucasians, since you probably have no color in your face. Remember: Lone Ranger masks are not acceptable during the pandemic. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) This is a golden opportunity to scare the hell out of trick-or-treaters in your neighborhood and save a

fortune in candy. Carve a pumpkin in the shape of a virus and put out a dummy wearing a hazmat suit. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Thanksgiving will be special this year. Give thanks to: Clarence Birdseye for creating frozen foods, no waiting for a table in restaurants, Delivery Dudes, and the people who wipe down shopping carts. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Pharmaceutical companies predict that a vaccine for the virus will be available for the Christmas and Hanukkah holidays. Plan ahead. As a gift, arrange for your spouse to be one of the first to get the shot. (Wait a few weeks before you get your shot, just in case there is a problem with the vaccine. No sense in both of you having to suffer). AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Romance is in the air. Unfortunately, so is the virus. Men: Order flowers for the wife for no special occasion. Women: Show your love in a meaningful way — take out the garbage. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20) Covid-19 will be a thing of the past. Instead, prepare to deal with the bird flu, chicken flu, and kangaroo flu. Since kangaroos are marsupials, a clear indicator that you have that variety of the disease will be the development of a pouch in your midsection. Not so terrible. You no longer will need pockets or a purse. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19) Tattoo parlors now will be allowed to open 24/7, enabling you to satisfy that urge to get branded at 4am. Tanning salons will be open at night. (Who needs them during the day in Florida?) TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20) Now would be an excellent time to detox from all the beer and wine you drank during the flu seasons. Socialize with friends, including those who annoyed you by defying all the rules during the pandemic, yet never got sick. Apologies to those whose signs are Gemini, Cancer, Leo and Virgo, as these are too far into the future to provide detailed horoscopes. However, I can offer the following advice for those zodiac symbols: GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Watch baseball. Drink beer. CANCER (June 21-July22) Watch baseball. Drink beer. LEO (July 23-Aug.22) Watch baseball. Drink beer. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Drink beer. Watch baseball. Y

Legal Matters

The Right Documents IN THESE CHALLENGING TIMES, LEGAL DOCUMENTS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER BY MARTIN ZEVIN, ATTORNEY SAFETY AND HEALTH ARE FOREMOST IN OUR MINDS THESE DAYS. WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU LOVE NEEDS TO BE HOSPITALIZED? AND WHAT IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU love dies? Now is the time to be prepared. Having the right legal documents for Florida is crucial. If you need to be hospitalized, it is imperative that you have a current designation of health care surrogate and living will. Your surrogate will be able to make medical decisions for you if you are unable to communicate. If the hospital does not allow visitors due to the pandemic, your surrogate will be able to talk to the doctors and make decisions on the phone or email. All your surrogate

needs to do is email or fax a copy of your document to the hospital. If there is no hope to save you, that surrogate would be authorized to "pull the plug" based on the living will. If you should die, your will or revocable living trust will determine who inherits your assets. The trust is important to consider if you own your home or other real estate, because it avoids probate. Probate can tie up your property for many months and prevent your heirs from selling without a court order. They would have to continue to pay taxes, maintenance, mortgage,

utilities etc. in addition to thousands of dollars in attorney fees and court costs. A life estate deed is another option to consider to avoid probate. Your attorney can discuss the different options and the benefits of each one. During this time of social distancing, I am providing free telephone conversations to discuss estate planning and protecting yourself if you are incapacitated. The durable power of attorney is also important to allow someone to take over your legal and financial affairs. If you decide to hire me, we are providing extremely safe signing procedures. You, my assistant and two witnesses will all be wearing masks and social distancing in our large conference room. The entire office will be thoroughly sprayed with Lysol before your arrival and after you leave. To minimize your stay, you will leave immediately after signing your documents. My assistant will be notarizing your signature and supervising the signing. The next day, you will be able to pick up executed originals and full copies. If you prefer, everything can be mailed to you. If you have older Florida documents, it is important to speak with an estate planning attorney to be sure they are still valid. Florida law has changed regarding the health care surrogate, living will and durable power of attorney requirements. If you have out of state documents, it is imperative that you do new Florida ones to conform to state law. In these unsettling times, putting your house in order can provide peace of mind. Once you have valid and current documents, hopefully you won't need them. Yogi Berra used to say: "That's the insurance when you don't have it, that's when you need it." Y Martin Zevin is available to discuss wills, trusts, estates, probate and is available for free consultation regarding personal injury claims or car insurance coverage. Try the Wine

It’s Greek to Me!

TASTY AND ENJOYABLE WINE FROM GREECE

BY DAVID EHRENFRIED

MY EARLIEST EXPERIENCE WITH GREEK WINE GOES BACK MANY YEARS TO MEALS AT POPULAR GREEK RESTAURANTS IN DETROIT AND CHICAGO. THOSE VISITS WERE MEMORABLE for flaming cheese to shouts of “Opah!”— a tradition, I’m told, that started in Chicago, not Greece — and unmemorable wines — except for retsina. If you’ve never tasted retsina, it’s a singularly unusual drink made by infusing white or rosé wine with sap from Aleppo pine trees. Pinesap resin was used in ancient Greece to seal the insides of the big, pointy-bottomed ceramic amphora jugs used to make, store and ship wine before the Romans introduced wooden barrels. The resin helped to prevent wine from oxidizing, but it also imparted pungent pine, bee’s wax, and

turpentine characteristics to the wine. Retsina remains a specialty in many Greek tavernas, although it’s less rustic-tasting than 2,000 years ago. It’s also fortunate that retsina is not representative of Greece’s leading wines, which are the pleasant subjects of this column and far better than my early memories. I'm a wine nut. So to me, foreign wine names are often intriguing swerves on the road to getting familiar with wines like agiorgitiko, assyrtiko, malagouzia, moschofilero, and xinomavro. I recently tasted a handful of these leading Greek varietals with my wife and one of my sons. They were all interesting, tasty, and enjoyable expressions of an energized and improving Greek winemaking culture. Important, as well, they were all excellent values that complement many different kinds of foods. For consumers not familiar with Greek, wines from Greece can present a challenge. Nearly all the main varieties of Greek wines have long names that many of us find unfamiliar and hard to remember, let alone pronounce. If friends told me before I researched this column that they recently opened a bottle of delicious agiorgtiko (AYE-yor-YEE-tee-ko) with dinner, my reaction might have been, “Where did what go? I didn’t know it left.” Seriously, not only would I have had difficulty spelling agiorgtiko (a notable red wine from Greece), I would not have readily recognized or been able to repeat the name. Part of enjoying wine is learning foreign names with >>>

Try the Wine unfamiliar letter combinations. Most English-speaking wine drinkers are comfortable pronouncing popular foreign grape and wine names. The “t’s,” for example, in the French names Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir, are familiarly silent. And the wonderful Spanish wine rioja, which we proudly pronounce as ree-OH-hah, is made from the grape, tempranillo, that we read as tem-prah-NEE-lyoh — as though Spanish were our second tongue, which it is for many.

Getting Familiar with Greek Wines Grapes and wine have deep roots in Greek culture and commerce. Greece has over 300 indigenous grape varietals, although only a handful is used for making serious wines. Grapes grow in Greece’s Macedonian north (the home of Alexander the Great), on the Peloponnese peninsula to the south (the cradle of Athenian democracy), and on Greece’s many islands, such as Santorini, Crete, Limnos, and Kefalonia. Wine has been made in Greece for over 6,000 years. So one theory goes, inhabitants of the island of Crete learned winemaking skills from the Egyptians, and from there, the practice spread north and west. Early Greek literary references to wine date back 2,700 years to Homer’s epic Greek poem, The Odyssey. English and other European words for “wine" and "libation" derive from similar sounding Greek words. And curiously, the word “symposium” comes from the almost identical Greek term for “drinking together,” typically combining wine with music, dance, and discussion about business, politics or casual topics. So next time you plan a symposium, don’t forget the ancient tradition of adding music and wine to lively discussion. Until recently, Greek wines have not figured significantly outside Greece since winemaking spread to Italy, France and other parts of Europe. Winemaking in Greece languished for centuries and began catching up with international standards only after Greece joined the European Union in 1981 and gained greater access to global capital and commercial markets. In addition to improving native grapes and local wine production quality, winemakers introduced cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, and other mostly French varietals. Still, wine production continued to focus mainly on local consumption and modest exports until the Great Recession in 2008. You may recall that Greece experienced a near catastrophic, years-long debt crisis and financial meltdown following years of economic instability. Growers, winemakers and the government realized that exporting more Greek wines could be a valuable source of much-needed foreign currency, and that spurred further improvements in quality to ensure Greek wines could find a competitive niche alongside other wines in European, U.S., and Asian markets. Tasting Greek Wines We tried the five leading Greek wines you should find online and in good wine shops and food markets with generous international wine selections. Three were whites and two were reds: 56 pointpubs.com •

POINT! PUBLISHING

Whites — assyrtiko, malagouzia and moschofilero; Reds — agiorgitiko and xinomavro. You may also see some white wines made with rodytis (rohDEE-tis) or savatiano (saw-vah-TEE-an-oh) grapes. Other reds you might see include robola and mavrodaphne, historically a sweet, raisin-tasting wine now also made in a dry version. You may also see blends of various grapes called rapsani. During warmer months, Greek rosé wines pop up made from many grape varieties. Finally, you might find vinsanto in the dessert wine section, a highly prized reddish-colored sweet wine made from assyrtiko and other grapes grown on the volcanic island of Santorini. Most of these wines sell in the $12-$25 range, with a small number selling for more.

White Wines

Assyrtiko (ahs-SER-tee-koh) Greece’s top white wine, Assyrtiko is pale yellow, light to medium bodied, and wonderfully bone-dry with racy acidity. Its concentrated aromas and flavors can vary widely depending on where the wine’s grapes were grown, which can be many places in Greece. The most sought-after come from the island of Santorini in the Aegaen Sea. Santorini experienced an immense volcano eruption 3,600 years ago that covered the island in volcanic soil and debris. The assyrtiko we drank from Santorini was a 2017 Tselepos ($32). It was excellent: elegant, austere and intensely aromatic with a delicious balance of crispness, acidity, sea salt, lemon, melon and other fruit flavors, and a languorous, savory finish. The other 100% Assyrtiko we tasted was a 2019 from the Peloponnese winery Ktima Mitravelas ($16). It had refreshing lemon, grapefruit and peach flavors, spice on the finish and a creaminess that appeared as the wine warmed in the glass. Its tartness reminded me of sauvignon blanc. Three other notable assyrtiko producers you might find are Domaine Sigalas, Kourtakis, and Santo. Assyrtiko complements grilled, baked or roasted fish, chicken, or vegetables, sushi, or even savory or spicy Asian or Indian dishes. Moschofilero (MOHS-koh-FEE-leh-roh) Moshofilero is a light-bodied, juicy, easy-drinking, and usually inexpensive wine that’s perfect for light meals, such as salads, sandwiches, appetizers or just casual or party conversation. It’s made with blue-skinned grapes and may have a rosy or orange hue. It’s less dry than assyrtiko with a bit of sweetness. We tried two 2018s, one by Nasiakos ($13) and the other by Antonopoulos ($12). Each was crisp and zesty with a bit of effervescence and some creaminess. Each also had lovely fruit, including distinct lemon, grapefruit and apple flavors, and floral aromas, plus lingering, appetizing finishes. These delightful moschofileros were fun wines. They’re terrific values for everyday enjoyment or just a change of pace from other whites. Among the many other producers to try, look for Boutari, Greece’s best-known vintner.

DIADEM SPORTS THE FUTURE OF TENNIS

Diadem Sports plans to develop an entertainment center at their headquarters in Pompano Beach

Lighthouse Point magazine had the opportunity to sit down with Evan Specht of Diadem Sports and gain insight into what the company has accomplished since the beginning of its journey. Thanks to their string and racket technologies Diadem Sports stands out from the rest of the competition. Last year, based on market research and data, about 6 percent of the population was playing tennis since spring 2019. This year just over 10 percent of the population is playing tennis, according to the U.S. Tennis Association. This lifelong sport is starting to make a comeback, and Diadem elevates the game by designing the most innovative per-

formance tennis gear on the planet. Before Diadem introduced its first product in 2015, the tennis industry had become stagnant, with very few brands challenging the status quo. Diadem's founders saw a need for something better. They first introduced their flagship string, the six-pointed Solstice Power with patented Star Core Technology, which was designed for massive spin and insane ball bite. "We wanted to come out with the best possible string, and that's how it started," said Evan Specht, Co-founder of Diadem. "That got us known, and then we went into other tennis products." CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE

After explosive growth in Diadem's early history, they were then able to design their performance rackets — Elevate 98 and Nova 100. Evan and his partner, AJ Bartlett, identified challenges in the industry where tennis equipment failed its players and together, they developed the solutions to overcome those challenges. With their combined experience as tennis players and coaches, they used their passion and expertise to create next-level tennis products that catered to players of all levels looking to elevate their game. "Diadem's mission is about growing the sport of tennis and building the tennis brand in America," said Specht. "We want to build up and support the younger players, and we continue to offer many sponsorships to junior players." As the last American tennis brand, all of their products are designed and developed in their global headquarters located in the heart of the hottest tennis market in the country — Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Diadem's extensive research and rigorous testing process ensure that every product developed meets superior levels of quality. Currently, Diadem offers a full product line of performance tennis gear, including strings, rackets, balls, bags, grips, and accessories. "When you have a passion for something, that means you care and will put more effort into making that thing better," said Specht. "And when you work harder than anyone else, you have a better chance."

While many businesses have been negatively affected by the coronavirus pandemic, Diadem has a continual increase in sales. "Tennis is one of the sports that's coming out of a pandemic stronger," said Specht. Because tennis does not require any direct person-to-person contact, players enjoy the many physical and mental benefits that tennis offers. Today Diadem is distributed worldwide and is growing this lifelong sport for players of all ages with the best gear in the game. The company has plans to develop an entertainment center at their headquarters in Pompano Beach as well as sponsor future tennis tournaments. Diadem may just be the future of tennis.

Through his stunning work, photographer Kevin Bryant brings the fascinating underwater world to a broad audience. Bryant earned the designation of Citizen Scientist from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, which has shared over 500 of Bryant’s aquatic life pictures. Kevin Bryant says he “...gets a kick out of cool nature stuff..” and considers himself a documentarian rather than an artist. Those who have enjoyed his photographs might differ with him; his colorful, aesthetically pleasing offerings are the work of someone who is both an artist and an educator. Bringing awareness to the plight of marine life in South Florida is essential to the healthy ecology and economy of the area. Kevin Bryant shines a light on these challenges. For nearly a decade, Bryant drove from his home in Savannah, Georgia to South Florida for long weekends full of diving. After retiring from dentistry, he moved to Florida, where he lives just 50 yards from the shore and access to diving. Bryant is a member of the South Florida Underwater Photography Society (SFUPS), a nonprofit that works to raise awareness of conservation initiatives and to share the beauty of the underwater life. The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) celebrates its 110th anniversary this year. Its first project took place in Panama in 1910 before the construction of the Panama Canal. The Smithsonian studied and cataloged flora and fauna of the lowland tropical forest that was about to be destroyed. That research was one of the first significant studies of environmental impact. The STRI was created to obtain and disseminate information about tropical ecosystems and their impact on humans’ wellbeing. Over 100 years later, the Smithsonian in Panama is the gold standard platform for researching the astonishing diversity of tropical forests and marine ecosystems.

Today, under the leadership of Acting Director Oris I. Sanjur, the STRI boasts a staff of 400, including 40 resident scientists. In addition, the institute offers fellowships, internships, and other opportunities to visiting scientists from research and academic programs around the world to travel to the institute in Panama and its scattered sites in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. These 1,400 visitors assist with some of the 300 plus ongoing projects

and peer-reviewed articles that appear in scientific journals yearly. The STRI promotes the understanding and preservation of tropical nature and our interaction with it. They train students to conduct independent research. Through the STRI outreach program, hundreds of teachers and tens of thousands of students are educated and inspired to be part of the solution to preserve the environment. John D. MacArthur Beach State Park Located on Jack Nicklaus Drive, this barrier island is a well-preserved piece of what Florida originally looked like before all our ancestors came and ruined it with centralized air conditioning and that whole modern civilization ruckus. Anyway, John D. MacArthur was a businessman and philanthropist who donated the barrier island to the state in the 1970s. Since then, the park has become a staple refuge of the area, sporting beautiful trails, beaches and a lovely lagoon that you can paddle lazily through to enjoy the mangroves and wildlife. The boardwalk offers another stunning view of the two-mile lagoon and a sweeping view of the sunset. This state park, while boasting beautiful trails, scenery and waterways, also has a fascinating history. During the days of Jim Crow and segregation, property owners along the Fort Lauderdale beaches didn’t want African Americans on “their” beaches. So, Dr. Von D. Mizell, founder of the Broward chapter of the NAACP, petitioned for a beach that African Americans could spend their summer afternoons on. The city relented and promised to build an access road to make it easier to get to. The county dragged its feet for an entire decade before Eula Johnson, the president of the local NAACP chapter at the time, staged a wade-in on the all-white beaches. Many of the parks’ facilities are named after people who also struggled for their rights when they were viewed as less-than. 6503 N Ocean Drrive Dania Beach 954-923-2833 Shortened hours due to Covid: 8am-6pm

Imagine the Everglades, except without having to go on an airboat. This 450-acre nature preserve, established in 1990, is home to marsh rabbits, deer, largemouth bass, snakes, over 100 species of birds, and regrettably, insects. There is a 1,650-foot boardwalk for your viewing pleasure, along with a pavilion to just vibe under. Typically, they rent canoes for you to paddle out into the marsh to get a closer look if that is your wish, but due to Covid-19, they have halted rentals until further notice. So, if you don’t mind using your feet a little, bring a camera to take some pictures of some of the indigenous wildlife. There probably won’t be any pesky iguanas, but we make no promises. IN THE Seafood snobs might say it is antithetical to consume frozen seafood while living a stone’s throw from the ocean. But 2020 has turned the world upside down, and with it, the way we shop for groceries. Enter bags of frozen shrimp, scallops and salmon. With fewer trips to the grocery store, relying on frozen seafood has become my new norm. And I have to admit, even after we make our way out of this pandemic and a quick jaunt to the seafood market isn’t fraught with angst, I might keep a bag or two handy for those lazy days when food shopping is just a bit too onerous. So go ahead — pick up a bag of frozen shrimp, scallops or whatever floats your boat. PHOTOS AND RECIPES BY MRS. KOSSENFLOFFER

Disco Shrimp

I love a recipe that isn’t even a recipe. But even more than that, I love a one-pan meal. I named this Disco Shrimp because I wrap a sheet pan in tin foil for easy cleanup. The tin foil reminds me of those 70s disco balls. I guess it’s a stretch, but it sounds fun and it is. The ingredients in the sauce are somewhat flexible. You can add more honey for sweetness or more sriracha for heat... you get the idea. The amounts are not written in stone. INGREDIENTS 1-3 tablespoons sriracha or gochujang (or anything hot that you love. Be careful as some hot sauces are hotter than others. Taste as you go.) 2 tablespoons neutral oil 1-2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 teaspoons honey 1 teaspoon rice wine vinegar 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined 1 pound asparagus, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces 1 onion, thinly sliced 76 pointpubs.com •

PREPARATION Place a rack at the top of the oven, close to the broiler. Turn the broiler on and let it heat up for a few minutes. Line a sheet-pan with tin foil. Whisk together the sriracha (or whatever hot sauce you are using), oil, soy sauce, honey and vinegar. Place the shrimp, asparagus and onion on the sheet-pan. Pour the soy sauce mixture on top and mix it all up so everything is coated. Make sure it is all in a single layer. Place the sheet-pan on the top rack and cook until the shrimp and asparagus are charred in spots and the shrimp are cooked through, about 4-6 minutes. If it is cooking unevenly, rotate the pan.

Seared Scallops with Grape Tomatoes, Basil and Mint

I scour the internet for cooking inspiration. And sometimes as soon as I spot something, I know I must make it. This breezy and easy scallop dish is inspired by Lidey Heuck who happens to be Ina Garten’s assistant. I promise, an impressive dinner has never been easier. Easy enough for after work and fancy enough for guests. INGREDIENTS 2 tablespoons butter 2-3 garlic cloves, minced 1/2 cup red onion, thinly sliced (or any onion you have) 1 pint grape tomatoes, halved 1/4 cup dry vermouth 16 sea scallops Kosher salt and black pepper 2 tablespoons neutral oil 1 lemon, juiced and zested Fresh basil or mint, julienned Coarse sea salt, for serving PREPARATION Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Melt the butter and add the onion and cook until they are translucent but not brown. Add the garlic and stir for about 30 seconds. Add the tomatoes and salt and pepper to taste. Cook until the tomatoes have given up their juices and are pretty soft. About 10 minutes. Transfer this mixture to a bowl. Wipe out the pan with a paper towel. Blot the scallops with a paper towel to make sure they are super-duper dry. If they are not dry they will not sear and get that perfect golden crust. Heat the oil in the pan over mediumhigh heat. When the oil is hot, add half the scallops. Do not overcrowd the pan. Cook the scallops without moving them for about 2-3 minutes until they are golden brown. Flip and cook for about another minute on the other side, until golden. Remove scallops from the pan and repeat with the rest of the scallops. Again, wipe the pan clean, removing any excess oil. Place the tomato mixture back in the pan and add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Add the scallops to the pan. Top with lemon zest and the basil or mint. Sprinkle with sea salt and serve right away.

Rainbow Salmon Bowl

No recipe required. This is called making something extraordinary out of the ordinary. Here, I mixed together a little honey, mustard and soy sauce and rubbed it on individual salmon fillets and baked them at 450 for about 10 minutes and then threw them under the broiler to get a char on them for about 2-3 minutes. Truth be told, I have cooked these from frozen, but it is better to defrost them. You can place anything in the bowl that you desire — and it’s a great way to repurpose leftover grains and veggies. This dish is all about marketing. Call it a “salmon bowl,” and now it’s a thing. In my bowl — turmeric couscous, salmon, roasted grape tomatoes, sautéed red cabbage, sautéed zucchini, avocado and a little tarter sauce. OCTOBER 2020 • pointpubs.com

Enjoy weekly deals with plenty of beers on tap and wines by the glass. For something different, try the sweet southern swine pizza — a light and crispy pizza topped with pork belly, arugula and cheese. They have daily specials served with a draft beer for $8. And the truffle fries are great with anything. 2411 N. Federal Highway, 954-786-3535 $

Jet’s Pizza. PIZZA Try one of the specialty pizzas such as Philly cheese steak with Alfredo sauce or the BLT. 437 E. Atlantic Blvd., 954-782-5387 $

Little Italian. PIZZA Little Italian Pizza is the best kind of Ital-

ian restaurant — the kind that feels like a hole-in-the-wall, but quickly grows vibrant as the large, steaming plates of homestyle Italian dishes come barreling out of the kitchen. The restaurant grinds their own sausage and bakes their own dough daily. While the small restaurant (with only about six cozy tables) doesn’t serve alcohol, they do allow BYOB (and there’s a liquor store conveniently located right next door). Families bring in bottles of red wine to cork, creating a joyous atmosphere. The restaurant has a huge menu with stromboli, calzone, soups, salads, subs, 26 kinds of specialty pizzas, baked pasta dishes, chicken and veal entrées and all your traditional pasta dishes and desserts. 448 S. Cypress Road, 954941-0550 $-$$

Nelson’s Diner. DINER Nelson’s diner, which was just pur-

chased by the owners of Galuppi’s, is a cute, hole-in-the-wall 50s diner with Elvis memorabilia on the walls, baseball flags on the ceiling, friendly servers and classic red vinyl booths. 438 S Cypress Road, 954-785-3646 $

The Chicken Box & More. • SOUTHERN This small spot with

just a couple of tables serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and does a robust take-out business. The shrimp and grits with scrambled eggs are a top-notch breakfast or a perfect “breakfast-for-dinner” option. The fried pork chops were delicately coated and crispy. We tried them with a classic potato salad and collard greens. The greens were stellar — they were juicy and perfectly seasoned with bits of pork supplying a pleasing heft. And who doesn’t love a marvelous fried chicken wing? If you are searching for a solidly authentic taste of comfort, the meatloaf is a must. 204 N Flagler Avenue, 954-781-7400

Tortillería Mexicana. MEXICAN Looking for a taco that goes

beyond ground beef and toppings? Not only will they supply you with fresh, unique tacos, but the corn tortillas are made from scratch daily. Who does that? 1614 E. Sample Rd., 954943-0057 $

School-cation

THE FOUR SEASONS RESORT PUNTA MITA If you are working from home while simultaneously supervising your kids’ education, you might consider a school-cation. The Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, Mexico, introduced a new program aptly named Knowledge For All Seasons. The program supports remote learning with a tech hotline, study buddies to help kids with their work ($60), and art, culture and sports classes ($45-$150). The program aims to make distance learning not only convenient but enjoyable for both parents and kids. The resort offers study cabanas ($150 daily) that can be reserved and transformed into private work stations with an ocean view. Each cabana has Wi-Fi, a portable charger, a TV monitor, and snacks and smoothies for energy. Of course, this is a Four Seasons property, so if you’re saving up for Harvard, this luxurious schoolcation could put a sizeable dent in your piggy bank. For a closer to home option, Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World offers a schoolcation opportunity.
