A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
OCTOBER 2022
AROUND TOWN LOCAL EVENTS BOO 2022 HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS CHOOSE LOVE RELATIONSHIP ADVICE
What do you love about this industr y?
I love my esteemed clientele I enjoy the ability to interact with some of the brightest and most influential people in the world, including ever yone from CEO’s, physicians and athletes to developers and local entrepreneurs Another aspect of the industr y the one that initially attracted me is the real estate itself I love architecture, and the histor y behind some of these exceptional estates is quite intriguing
What sets you apar t from other agents?
Since the inception of my career in 2010, my specialized niche has always been the million dollar plus market I provide my clients with the ultimate personal concierge ser vice, always striving to exceed their expectations and ensuring them the utmost confidentiality. My focus is on Quality Quality ser vice, Quality marketing, Quality proper ties. One of the main components of my proven ser vice is my unrivaled multi media marketing strategy, including targeted direct mail. It is that proprietar y marketing which has enabled me to achieve over $500 Million in total career sales.
Anything unique you can tell us about a recent sale?
I recently sold a point lot at 2530 NE 32nd Cour t that was listed for $10 95M It is the highest priced residential sale in Lighthouse Point for new construction I am extremely proud to have represented the seller in that transaction, enabling my client to maximize return on investment
What attracts buyers to Lighthouse Point?
It is such a beautiful community centered around families, yachting and a leisurely lifestyle I am originally from the Midwest, so I par ticularly value that true sense of community it provides In Lighthouse Point you find multi generational involvement with kids that were raised here coming back to raise families of their own With our own police and fire depar tments, parks and yacht club, and 18 miles of navigateable water ways with easy ocean access through the Hillsboro Inlet, it is an ideal lifestyle enclave, especially for the avid boater.
Where do most of your buyers come from?
My buyers are predominantly local There are a number of affluent individuals moving up and down the coast because they are downsizing, upsizing, or simply moving fur ther east to be on the water. Additionally, I deal with buyers from the Nor theast and Midwest who are moving here for Florida’s lifestyle and tax advantages where my affiliate network is already embedded.
What trends do you foresee in the luxur y real estate market?
Since I work with an extensive roster of investors, builders, architects and interior designers, I am extremely attuned to the latest trends in the high end market I find most buyers today are looking for a turnkey situation Transitional design checks a lot of their boxes, as do coastal elevations with contemporar y finishes
With current supply chain issues, there are significant delays and frustrations when it comes to building or renovating So most buyers, especially those from out of town, are still willing to pay more for turnkey estates or newly completed construction Another trend I see is the preference for one stor y residences or a two stor y with elevator for ease of living
Your current thoughts on the real estate market?
There are obviously macroeconomic and global headwinds changing market activity…and that has some buyers second guessing themselves. With inventor y of homes slowly increasing, interest rates rising and demand slowing, the market is becoming more balanced and retur ning to a nor mal seasonal pace this summer as compared to the last 2+ years. Overall, this is a transitional market heading into a new normal.
When is the best time to sell a home?
South Florida has become a year round selling season Obviously, we are ver y busy during high season, which extends from Januar y through April However, summer is a smar t time to market a luxur y proper ty because children are out of school and it is ideal for corporate relocations Although summer activity is relatively slower, we still do extremely well during this timeframe Then there is always an end of year rush to close and be in for the winter months and for homestead tax purposes

The Signs I See
BY SUSAN ROSSER
I remember a few years ago when a friend told me a story I found particularly odd. She had taken her dog for a walk but forgot to bring a plastic bag. When she realized her mistake, a Publix bag magically wafted along the ocean breeze to land right beside her. She was sure it was her mother, who had recently passed, who sent the bag. At the time, I thought it was more likely a coincidence than a heavenly intervention. After all, if I was in some sort of magical afterlife realm, I’m not sure supplying puppy poopy bags would be my first priority. I would most likely reserve my special earthly intervention powers — which most certainly have limitations — for more pressing matters.
Several years later, as I was driving from my mother’s funeral to the cemetery for the burial ceremony, I turned on our car radio to plug in my phone to use the GPS. And just like that, one of my mom’s all-time favorite songs, Three Dog Night’s “Joy to the World,” came blaring out of the car speakers. Surely, my mother was trying to cheer me up. I could practically see her in the kitchen of my childhood home, singing “Jeremiah had a bullfrog” on a hot summer day as she danced across the kitchen to serve my apresday-camp snack.
As we waited outside the cemetery for the entire processional to line up, one of my oldest and best friends Robin, who was in her car behind me, told me that she also had used her GPS and a road called Elaine Way (my mother’s name was Elaine) had popped onto her screen and then disappeared. She tried to find Elaine Way again, but couldn’t. She was sure my mom was up to something. Perhaps she was just sending my old friend Robin a message that she was thankful we were together on a pretty rough day for me.
Oh, and then there are the songs.
My oldest sister Debbie passed away on a Thursday. The following Monday, I started the first of 19 radiation treatments for breast cancer. I was somewhat of a wreck that first day — not knowing what to expect from radiation and still reeling from the loss of my sister. The technicians lined me up on the table, calling out numbers that were meaningless to me. Then they disappeared to wherever they disappear to during the radiation. The room was dimly lit. I stared up at a ring of rainbow lights along the perimeter of the ceiling. There was music playing.
But as soon as the techs left the room, I heard Paul McCartney singing “Til There Was You.” A quick smile spread across my face, and I felt a tear form in the outer corner of my eye. That particular 1963 cover of “Til There was You” was one of my sister Debbie’s favorite songs. She sang it all the time. As that tear welled up and eventually trickled down my cheek, I was sure Debbie was with me. My big sister was there, somehow reaching out from wherever she was, holding my hand, and letting me know I would be OK.
This past summer, my nephew was married in Charlottesville, Virginia. It was a small and lovely affair. Early in the reception, I was sitting at the bar when my middle sister Jaimee told me that she was thinking of our big sister Debbie. It was a lovely celebration, and we both wished our big sister could be there — celebrating with us.
Then a few hours later, after dinner had been served and we were all just milling about, my kids came running up to me and asked if I had noticed Sheryl’s dress — the mother of the groom. I hadn’t, so they grabbed me by the hand and pulled me over to see her dress. It was a long and lovely gown with a print inspired by the famous children’s book, “The Little Prince.” As soon as I saw it, I had to show my sister Jaimee.
“The Little Prince” was one of Debbie’s all-time favorites. I still have her original copy, which was given to her and Jaimee by their childhood babysitter Carol Peterson.
When I was in first grade, and Debbie was a senior in high school, she read “The Little Prince” to me. We would snuggle in my bed each night as she recited chapter after chapter. I worshipped her.
Clearly, that dress was a sign.
But who knows?
Maybe all of these stories are just pure coincidence. Maybe not. Losing people we love is certainly difficult, but each time I hear a song or see some other sign, I remember the love.
So I keep looking for the signs.

The Can’t Miss Tour
WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 29 | 7pm
WHERE: Pompano Beach Amphitheater, 1806 NE Sixth St., Pompano Beach COST: $39 – $275
WHAT: Country artist Travis Tritt’s albums, seven of which are certified platinum or higher, have led him to amass more than 30 million career album sales, two GRAMMY® Awards, four CMA Awards, including the CMA Horizon Award (now known as the New Artist Award), a Billboard Music Award for Top New Artist, an invitation to become a member of the world-famous Grand Ole Opry and a devoted fan base. He is also dubbed one of “The Class of ‘89,” which includes country music superstars Garth Brooks, Clint Black, and Alan Jackson, who dominated the charts in the ‘90s. Country star Chris Janson is a platinum-selling recording artist, celebrated entertainer, multi-instrumentalist and award-winning singer/songwriter. The ACM Award-winner has collected prestigious accolades that place him amongst country music greats. Both his inspiring hit “Drunk Girl” and his chart-topping, 3x Platinum smash “Buy Me A Boat” were named among NSAI’s “Ten Songs I Wish I’d Written” lists — making Janson one in a handful of the industry’s most elite artists to earn the title multiple times. “Buy Me A Boat” was also recognized as the iHeartRadio Music Awards Country Song of the Year. “Good Vibes,” the flagship single from his 2019 album Real Friends, and follow-up “Done” each topped the country charts, bringing his total of #1 songs to four.
In addition to his own successes, the talented songwriter has lent his pen to industry peers,
including Tim McGraw (“Truck Yeah,” “How I’ll Always Be”), LOCASH (“I Love This Life”) and the legendary Hank Williams Jr. (“God Fearin’ Man,” “Those Days Are Gone”).

Improve Your Smile
1. INLAYS AND ONLAYS This cosmetic dentistry procedure is also known as indirect fillings. They are used when a tooth has mild to moderate decay or insufficient structure to support a filling. Provided there is no damage to the tooth cusps, the inlay is placed directly onto the tooth surface. However, when
it into the right shape before curing it with a high-intensity light. Also referred to as “bonding,” this procedure effectively covers the tooth’s damage and gives the appearance of a healthy tooth in its place. Bonding is one of the least expensive cosmetic dentistry procedures available.
3. DENTAL VENEERS Dental veneers are custom-made caps that go over your natural teeth. They resolve numerous cosmetic problems, including crooked teeth, cracked or damaged enamel and gaps between teeth. The dentist applies the veneer to the front of each tooth.
the cusp or portion of the tooth is damaged, your dentist may use an onlay to cover the tooth’s entire surface. Inlays and onlays are made from a composite of porcelain or ceramic material and attached to the teeth with adhesive dental cement. They provide support to strengthen teeth, restore their shape, and avoid further decay.
2. COMPOSITE BONDING Composite bonding refers to repairing decayed, damaged, or discolored teeth using material that resembles tooth enamel color. Your dentist drills out the tooth decay then applies the composite onto the tooth’s surface, and then “sculpts”
4. TEETH WHITENING Teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures. First the dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from each tooth’s surface, restoring its natural appearance. Then the teeth can then be whitened with a bleaching agent. Whitening coats the teeth, and this procedure can be done in the dental office or at home. Additionally, patients can use toothpaste to achieve the same effect in one to two weeks. This product works to whiten teeth more than three shades over two weeks and optimal results within four weeks.
5. IMPLANTS Dental implants are used to replace lost or damaged teeth. The dentist inserts a small titanium screw into the jaw which serves as the support for a crown. These implants are almost indistinguishable from the surrounding natural teeth. Once the bone and supporting tissue fuse to the implant, they are permanently secured into place. Patients need to practice diligent oral hygiene during the implant placement period and after the implant procedure is completed to clean plaque and food debris from the area.
Dr. Nelly Perez has been a dentist for 10 years. She earned an opportunity to attend an Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency as well as a Fellowship in General Dentistry from the University of Connecticut Health Center. This is where she learned and practiced hospital dentistry, advanced restorative dentistry, and other multi-specialty disciplines. Dr. Nelly practices state-of-the-art procedures, including minimally invasive dentistry, implant dentistry, smile design, Invisalign, and esthetic enhancement with botox and fillers in addition to more routine procedures. Dr. Nelly is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. If you’re considering cosmetic dentistry procedures, the Park Plaza Dental Team is here to help! Necessity is the Mother of Achievement
BY CRAIG HALEY
HIGH PERFORMERS REALIZE THEY NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL. THEY ARE CONSCIOUS THAT OTHER PEOPLE RELY ON THEM, COUNT ON THEM, AND NEED THEM TO BE AT THEIR BEST.
Business leaders and entrepreneurs know their employees, team members, and vendors depend on them to be at their best and produce the needed results so everyone can excel.
All-Star athletes know their teammates count on them and need them to perform at their best when the game is on the line. They know the fans are spending hard-earned money to be in the stands and want to deliver a memorable performance. There are three strategies or mindsets that top performers use to raise their level of necessity so they can achieve big and win when it counts.
The next time you go to work out, ask yourself: “Who needs me to get my health and fitness to a higher level?”
When you’re at work, ask yourself: “Who needs me to be highly productive and efficient today? Who needs me to produce great results?” That responsibility and accountability will drive you to focus more and perform better.
High performers have an internal feeling of necessity for themselves. Their self-identity is that of a world-class achiever, which drives them to work harder, and smarter and gets measurable results.
Ask yourself: “What about my identity and external obligations makes it imperative for me to deliver today?”
Parents often move mountains to protect their children and keep them safe. We have all heard the stories of parents demonstrating herculean acts of strength to get their children out of a burning vehicle.
Necessity is a strong driver that leads to performance at the highest level!
Strategy #2: Affirm the Why
High performers have clear, concise goals, but more importantly than that, they have compelling reasons why they want to achieve their goals.
It has been said that having goals is great, but your reasons why will make you do the work when you don’t feel like it. Your reasons why will drive you because you realize there are people and circumstances that you are responsible for.
Strategy #1: Know Who Needs You on Your “A” Game
Michael Jordan is known as the best basketball player of all time. He has repeatedly said that he had an internal sense of necessity to win. Jordan pushed himself to the limit in practice, at the gym with his trainer, Tim Grover, and in games.
There was a game late in his career when he had food poisoning and felt awful. Most players would never even suit up for the game. Jordan needed to win, for himself, his team, and the fans.
He put on a heroic performance and led his team to victory. At the end of the game, he could barely stand. His teammate, Scottie Pippen, helped him off the court to the bench.
There was a man who was married, and the couple had two children. This husband and father was 150 pounds overweight. He tried for years to lose weight but had little to no success.
Later, his daughter got sick, and they discovered she needed a new kidney. All the family members got tested to see if they were a match to donate a kidney, and the dad was the only one that was a match.
The doctor told him he could not perform the surgery on him because he was obese. The father asked how much weight he had to lose to be eligible for the surgery. The doctor said he had to lose at least 100 pounds.
Guess what? In less than nine months, the dad lost the

weight, had the surgery, and the daughter survived and had a wonderful life.
What changed? What made the man finally lose weight? He knew how to lose weight, so knowledge and an action plan were not the issues. He lost the weight because he had a compelling reason to get it done, the well-being of his little girl.
Goals are great, but compelling reasons will ensure you get the job done!
Strategy #3: Level Up Your Squad
The people you surround yourself with have an incredible impact on your success and results in life.
Author and speaker, Charlie” Tremendous” Jones says: “You will be the same person in five years that you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.”
What he is saying is two of the most dominant influences in your life are the information you take in and the people you spend the most time with.
It has been said that your net worth will be the average of the five people you spend the most time with.
If you hang out with healthy people who love to work out, you will likely become healthy and work out more. If you hang out with successful, driven businesspeople, you are likely to become more successful and get better results in your career. If you hang around with people with good money management habits, you will likely start making better decisions with your money.
Author and speaker Brendon Burchard says: “Proximity is power!” You will level up your game and results when you surround yourself with achievers and high performers.
You should constantly evaluate the people in your circle and determine if they are helping or hurting you. There are some people you can spend a little time with but not a lot. In those cases, you should ask: “How can I inspire others to raise their standards?” Try to be a force for good and positively impact others.
Ask yourself: “How can I work with the best people as I embark on this next project?”
Success leaves clues! Michael Jordan had a great teammate in Scottie Pippen and an amazing coach in Phil Jackson. World Champion Mike Tyson had two incredible trainers (Cus D’Amato and Teddy Atlas) to teach and influence him to become the youngest heavyweight champion in boxing history. Kobe Bryant had Shaquille O’Neal and Phil Jackson to help him lead the L.A. Lakers to five NBA championships. The list

Relationships
Choose Love
DO YOU KNOW THAT THE WAY MOST OF US THINK ABOUT LOVE IS DEAD WRONG? WE TEND TO THINK OF LOVE AS A “FEELING” OR AN “EMOTION.” REMEMBER WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED dating your spouse, and you couldn’t stop thinking of them? You couldn’t wait to be together. Remember how much effort you put into making your partner feel special? You had butterflies in your stomach, and you felt like you were walking on cloud nine all the time. You were so in love and your wedding day was probably one of the most beautiful days of your life. I bet just thinking about that time brings a smile to your face. Or perhaps you are thinking, “wow, I miss that feeling?” Or how did things change so much?
BY MICHELLE HAYS
I focused on what I wasn’t “feeling,” the less loving I became. The less loving and resentful I became, the less I enjoyed my life and my family. I believed my husband wouldn’t change, and I would never have the kind of marriage I longed for with him. (Do you notice something about the last sentence?) So, there I was, a young mother of two, divorced at 30.
Fast forward, I got married again. Then a few short years later, it happened. Again. I was an unhappy wife. I wanted to feel loved. Respected. Understood. Don’t all men and women want and deserve that?! How could I be feeling unhappy and unloved again?
At that point, I took a long hard look at myself. I was the common denominator. What was I doing to contribute to my own unhappiness? Was I neglecting my own needs? Was I really being loving or manipulative? Were my expectations unrealistic? Was I focusing on the negative or the positive?
Self-awareness. Powerful stuff.
So, I committed to learning how to create a happy marriage. I chose to be loving even when it was challenging. I decided to focus on the good in my spouse. I expressed my needs instead of expecting my spouse to be a mind reader.
I didn’t ask my husband to change. I changed. I discovered that love is not a feeling. Love is a decision.
So why is it that everything is so wonderful at the beginning of our relationships, and after a relatively short time, we somehow lose that loving “feeling?”
What were your expectations of love and marriage? Are you just going through the motions these days? Has your resentment built up from all the years filled with things you didn’t say? When was the last time you put some effort into showing your spouse that they are an essential part of your life? When was the last time you intentionally did or said something in hopes that your spouse felt loved? Are these questions making you slightly uncomfortable? That’s the point. Sometimes, we must shake things up a little. With that said, I was an unhappy wife. I felt unloved. The more
All marriages have challenges. Yours, mine, and everyone else’s. So why not address your challenges with the person you have built a life with? Decide to create the kind of marriage you want and deserve. Decide to learn how! Decide to be kind. Decide to be vulnerable. Decide to seek understanding. I am not better than you. I am just better than I was, and you can be better also.
The choices you and your spouse have made up until now have created the kind relationship you currently have. Have you created a loving, fulfilling marriage? Don’t you want and deserve more? The good news is that you can hit the reset button right now — regardless of the state of your relationship. Today. Start with small, simple changes. Are you destroying or creating love?
Remember, love is a decision. Choose love. Y

What to Do When Your Spouse or Partner Dies
BY MARTIN ZEVIN, ATTORNEY
LOSING YOUR SPOUSE, PARTNER, OR SIGNIFICANT OTHER IS A VERY TRAUMATIC EVENT. IT IS ESSENTIAL FOR YOUR PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING TO GIVE YOURSELF time for the grieving process. Once you feel mentally and emotionally able to do so, you should schedule an appointment with an attorney to review all estate planning legal documents.
You should bring your will and/or revocable living trust, deed to your home and any other real estate, a certified copy of the death certificate and, if married, the date of your marriage. If you have advanced care directives such as a living will, durable power of attorney and designation of health care surrogate, you should also bring those.
Probate might be necessary if your spouse or partner owned something in their name alone with no designated beneficiary. Bring details of such assets to the appointment.
If everything you owned was in both names, it is not necessary to probate the will. However, regarding your home and any other real estate, it is important to “clear the title.” The lawyer will prepare and have you sign a “continuous marriage affidavit,” which is why you need the date of your marriage. The affidavit will state that you were married on a certain date and remained continuously married without divorce until the date of death. It will provide the legal description of your home and other real estate and indicate your intention to clear title. This document will be recorded, along with an affidavit of no Florida estate tax due and the death certificate without the cause of death. Recording these documents will clear the title and allow you the option to do a new deed to avoid probate when you die. If you were not married but owned your home (or any other property) jointly, it is still important to clear the title. Of course, a continuous marriage affidavit will not be necessary.
If you do not have a revocable living trust, this appointment will be a good opportunity to discuss the creation of a trust and preparation of a deed in order to avoid probate on your home and other real estate. You can also discuss the option of a life estate deed to avoid probate.
If you do have a trust, this may be an appropriate time to consider doing an Amendment to the Trust based on new
circumstances. Your home and other real estate (in Florida and out-of-state) should be owned by you as trustee of the trust. You may wish to name one of your children as co-trustee to make it easier to manage the assets in your trust if you become incapacitated. You may also wish to make changes in your living will, durable power of attorney and designation of health care surrogate or create those documents if you do not have them.
In most cases, there is no urgency to contact an attorney. It is much better to have peace of mind and clarity. Some lawyers, including myself, will offer a free consultation. This consultation should include your options and give you the opportunity to sleep on it before finalizing any new legal documents.
In addition, when you are ready, there are actions you should take for which you do not need an attorney. This includes rolling over your spouse’s IRA to yours, claiming life insurance benefits and naming beneficiaries on any joint accounts. If you have individual accounts or life insurance and your spouse is the beneficiary, be sure to change it. However, your lawyer can advise you on these matters.
If you are going through the loss of a loved one, my prayers are with you. Y

Fish Tales
The Altruistic Fishing Community
We are leaving the summer months and heading into the fall. Regarding fishing, it is paradise to be in South Florida this time of year. As the weather chills in the Northeast, the tropics cool down to perfect temperatures with less humidity. The first cold spells will push the winter fronts south into Florida. These sudden temperature changes push many species of fish south to find warmer waters – including swordfish. October and November have been known to produce some of the largest catches of the year in our local waters. Swordfish can travel up to 1,500 miles in six weeks and grow to well over 500 pounds.
We are fortunate here in Pompano Beach and Lighthouse Point to have some of the most fertile fishing grounds just 15-20 miles off our shores. In less than an hour, you can be set up on the fishing ground looking for the catch of a lifetime. Swordfish dive down as deep as 3,700 feet during the day. Like many species, the moon phase affects their daily movement patterns and eating habits. They are considered opportunistic feeders, and their diet readily consists of squid, crustaceans on the sea floor and whatever else they can find. Not only is the swordfish a soughtafter game fish, but it is also excellent table fare. Swordfish can be found yearround for consumption.
The swordfish migration has inspired, Trae West and Nicole Zapetis of Big Dog Tackle to organize a local fishing tournament not only to bring local anglers together but also local businesses to raise money for local charities. Those local charities are Fishing For Autism, Captain’s for Clean Water and The Billfish Foundation. The fishing community is one of the most resilient, caring and generous bunch you will ever encounter. From hurricane Dorian to Covid 19, our local community has gone out of its way to help others in need. The Swordfish Battle Tournament will be held on Oct. 22. The weigh-in will be hosted at The Sands

Financial Fitness
Smart Money Moves
MAKE THEM WHILE YOU’RE STILL MENTALLY SHARP
BY GREG EDWARDS
AS WE AGE, WE TEND TO LOSE SOME OF OUR COGNITIVE ABILITIES, WHICH CAN CAUSE US TO MAKE FINANCIAL DECISIONS THAT AREN’T IN OUR BEST INTERESTS.
Don’t panic. There are steps you can take right now that can potentially set you up for success even if you begin to experience some form of cognitive impairment that might otherwise threaten your financial future.
Action steps
1. START EARLY. The ideal time to think about protecting your assets from the impact of cognitive decline is well before the need arises. You can’t make a legally binding will or set up other legal documents (like power of attorney and trusts) unless you are considered to be “of sound mind”—which essentially means you understand the consequences of your decisions and you act of your own free will.
2. SIMPLIFY YOUR FINANCIAL LIFE. Consider consolidating disparate accounts under one roof. For example, you might place most, or all of your investments with one trusted financial advisor, or merge multiple bank accounts into one. Such “clutter reduction” will not only help you, but may also help if another person — such as a family member or advisor — needs to step in to assist you down the road.
3. HAVE CLARIFYING CONVERSATIONS WITH FAMILY AND ADVISORS. Discuss your wants, needs and values with those people. If your future caregivers and decision-makers know today about your goals and how you want to be helped in the future, they can prepare themselves to honor your wishes.
4. SET UP — OR REVIEW — IMPORTANT LEGAL DOCUMENTS. Here’s where your intentions meet up with execution. Some of the key documents you should consider having in place in the event that you experience serious physical or cognitive decline are obvious — such as a will. But others are too often overlooked or never updated, including:
• Durable power of attorney for finances This allows you to appoint one or more people to manage your financial assets if necessary.
• Health care directives
These documents spell out clear directions to family members and physicians about preferred health decisions and related matters — effectively relieving family of having to make life-anddeath choices about you without any guidance.
• Living trusts A revocable living trust can allow you to name a successor trustee who can take control of the assets in the trust if you become mentally or physically incapacitated.
5. COMPILE CRITICAL DOCUMENTS AND OTHER IMPORTANT FINANCIAL INFORMATION. If someone eventually needs to help make financial decisions on your behalf, it’s best to make it easy for them to step into that role. To that end, start compiling a comprehensive inventory of your key financial information. You can create a digital file or folder, or keep hard copies in a specific spot like a desk drawer.
Let’s be honest about the possibility that we may experience some form of cognitive decline. Then we can take action steps to minimize the potential for making wealth-erasing mental mistakes. By working in partnership with family and trusted advisors, we can seek to protect the assets we’ve worked so hard to build and grow over our lives. Y

Bees on my Basil
(MY INTRODUCTION TO GARDENING)
BY JIM TERLIZZI
Bees are very beneficial. They are responsible for pollinating up to 75 percent of our food crops, so when I learned that their numbers were dropping precipitously, I decided to help them out in my small way.
My online search told me that bees are partial to, among other plants, firebush and sunflower, so I bought one of each.
What the internet didn’t tell me was how fast they grow.
Four hours after I planted the firebush it was 8 feet tall. In that same amount of time, the sunflower grew to 22 feet. That meant I had to cut them back six times a day, or they would be at too great an altitude for the bees to reach. This seriously cut into my sleep time, but a small price to pay to save the bees.
My next move was to get some ladybugs to control the aphids that inevitably would show up. I got 6,000 ladybugs delivered for $59.99. I also bought Uncle Dunkel’s Bark-Clad Ladybug House for $27.99. When I opened the box, the ladybugs immediately moved into the house. Twenty-four hours later they all moved to my neighbor’s yard. Apparently, they did not like the accommodations.
Uncle Dunkel was kind enough to offer store credit. The ladybug seller was not so generous. The manager told me the ladybugs are guaranteed to be delivered live — not loyal.
A friend, who is a master gardener, suggested that I acquire some beneficial nematodes as part of my organic gardening regimen. Nematodes are naturally occurring, microscopic organisms found in soil throughout the world. They actively hunt and destroy unwanted insect larvae.
I went to the website of “Nematodes R Us” and found I could buy 150-million of the microscopic critters for $142, which translates to .0000094 cents each — a bargain compared to the ladybugs. Since they cannot fly, I figured this was a safe purchase, as they would stay put.
When the box of nematodes arrived, I was surprised to see it was less than the size of half a brick. On it was printed a notice that said: REMEMBERr: THESE ARE MICROSCOPIC. YOU CANNOT SEE THEM. I thought, heck, you must be able to see 150,000,000 of anything. Not so.
Being a trusting soul, I opened the box and began dumping its “contents” around the yard. My wife came by and asked why I was shaking an empty box over the plants. I explained it to her and when she stopped laughing she asked how much I paid for them. When I said $142 she replied: “If you can spend that on an empty box, I am going to start shopping at Neiman Marcus.”
My plan sort of worked. The bees were attracted to the yard by the firebush and sunflowers, but they didn’t land on them. Instead, they moved into my basil plant on the patio. It seems they love the little white flowers it produces.
Sadly, when I try to pick some basil leaves for cooking, the bees become agitated. I’ve been stung enough times that I now get my basil from Publix.
It turns out bees are ingrates.
Would anyone like to buy a firebush or sunflower plant? Y

The Relaunch the Artist-in-Residence Program in Pompano Beach
BY V. MICHELLE OPRISI
The City of Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Department is relaunching its artists-in-residence (AiR) program at the historic Bailey Contemporary Arts Center (BaCA). The AiR program provides artists with studio space to create new work, collaborate with fellow resident artists, and engage with the community.
LEFT
The new artist-in-residence group: Andy Ballentine, Gerard Pastor, Kim Ferguson, Shanna Woods, Gregory Dirr, Manzi Liu, Darcy Roberts, Leonardo Montoya photographed at BaCA in Pompano Beach
A distinguished panel of judges selected eight new artists to be part of the first “graduating class.” This dynamic and diverse group of artists will be in residence through June, and we will present each as an artist of the month, offering them the opportunity to showcase their work and create unique programs to attract art lovers to BaCA. At the culmination of the residency, AiR artists will share their new artworks in an exciting group exhibition.

Kim Ferguson
Kim Ferguson creates sculptural and functional ceramic pieces that reflect her philosophy of eternal optimism in the face of chaos. Her work has been described as whimsical, vibrant, and feminine and is informed by her childhood in Jamaica and her immigration experience in South Florida. For her residency project, Ferguson will continue to create work that encourages viewers to examine their perspective on “negative” or “chaotic” circumstances. In addition to her typical studio techniques, she plans to employ molds and glasswork techniques and further explore her sculpted figures (called Divines) and the Plant Mama (sculpted plant pot) series. One piece, in particular, “Shark Week,” will be fully realized during the residency and serve as the main ‘high art’ piece of the collected work.

Gerard Pastor utilizes colored pencils to create stunning works of art inspired by the Lucumi religion, which survived the slave trade era. Often mired in secrecy and negative perceptions, the Afro-Caribbean faith serves as a creative force for Pastor who looks to inspire understanding. During his residency at BaCA, Pastor will focus his work on the study of how women participate in religion and how religion is used as a patriarchal tool to elevate men, when historically, the innate power of survival has been through women.

Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice
My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the rst phone call, you will nd my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs.
I care for people in their 80s and 90s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20s and 30s who desire an improved quality of life and want to feel “normal” again.
Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery
My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient.
“I'm in the healthcare business and these folks really care.” — Bob L., September 2022
“After two new hips and a knee, I’m now able to move freely and stay in shape because of my perfect surgeries.”
