CREATIVELY
Speaking BY SUSAN ROSSER
What goes around comes around There are moments we look back on when our lives change—or when we help other people change. The summer of 1974 was the first time I went to sleep-away camp. Both my older sisters had gone to camp so I was excited about my new adventure. I knew I would love it. Although I was eager to go, I was just 10 years old and pretty nervous to spend eight weeks away with total strangers. I took a window seat by myself on the bus from Long Island to the hills of northern Pennsylvania. As I sat there, I heard a voice from the seat behind me say “little girl, can you pick up my candy?” There were two older girls seated behind me. I looked under my seat, picked up their candy and passed it back to them. I was just glad someone talked to me. When I got to camp, I quickly learned that the girl who spoke to me was the-one-and-only Claudia Caine. 1974 was Claudia’s ninth summer at camp and she was a “Super Senior”—the oldest group at camp. Suffice it to say—she was a legend, color-war captain and all-around great camper. Fast forward to 1980, I am a C.I.T (counselor in training) and Claudia is a counselor. The age difference isn’t so great anymore and we became fast friends. We have been close ever since. After Claudia graduated from college, she was at my apartment one day and told my older sister how she hated her new job. My sister explained to her about her masters in health administration from Duke. Claudia was intrigued. She applied to NYU, earned her masters and is now the President of NYU Lutheran Medical Center in New York. I’d say she is probably pretty happy I sat in front of her on that bus in 1974. Flash forward to 1987 and my niece Lucy is born in New York City. Lucy was pretty sick when she was born and had several surgeries before she could finally go home. She has cystic fibrosis, but has always managed to be a kind, positive, funny and smart girl and is currently studying to be a nurse. When Claudia heard about Lucy’s goal, she offered to help her in any way she could. This past summer, Lucy worked at Lutheran Medical Center in all the different departments of the hospital so when she graduates, she’ll know exactly what she wants to do. Every time I spoke to Lucy about her work at the hospital, her enthusiasm was palpable. I know we like to think we are always in total control, but the truth is some of the best parts of our lives come from chance encounters at random times and places. There’s an old saying “It’s not what you know, but who you know.” I wonder who I will meet today?

Going places NORTON MUSEUM OF ART 1451 S. OLIVE AVENUE, WEST PALM BEACH THROUGH JANUARY 3, 2016 Showcasing vehicles from the extensive collection of longtime Norton supporters Jean S. and Frederic A. Sharf, this exhibit focuses on the art of 20thcentury transportation design. Mr. Sharf, especially, has long been fascinated by the acceleration of life that occurred in the middle decades of the 20thcentury. Featuring more than 200 items, including design drawings, concept sketches, renderings, advertising art and posters, as well as model trains, planes, and automobiles from the Sharfs’ collection, this exhibition literally examines how we arrived here—and highlights the designers who created the look of the 20th-century vehicles. Going Places is augmented with related period newsreels, TV ads, and clips from classic films and television programs. The exhibit also includes objects and works of art from two previous exhibitions, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and The Great Age of the American Automobile, organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

They just don’t belong in our Florida landscape. Fortunately, there are some really excellent choices for those who wish to have a living holiday tree that can be planted into the landscape, creating a Christmas memory arboretum. Our Florida native, Southern Red Cedar (Juniperus salicicola) is a great choice as is the Arizona cypress (Cupressus arizonica). Both evergreens make a striking, low maintenance addition to the landscape, and are great bird attractors, both for nesting and as a food source. They grow to around 25 feet, prefer full sun and are drought tolerant. Best of all, their pyramidal shape makes the perfect Christmas tree! by China’s history, culture, superstitions, art, cuisine, medicine, and Nüshu, the secret language of women, now extinct, like the binding of female children’s feet. Later, I’d cull from these sensual experiences to use in my novel-writing. Returning from Asia equipped with notes while traveling, I wrote a romantic story in alternating chapters, incorporating China’s historical details, using the Boxer Rebellion as the backdrop. After China, I was fortunate because I met four scribbling women in Iowa working on novels, and we formed a writing group that continues to meet once a year, since we live scattered in different states. I am fortunate also, because I am tenacious, and persistence pays off. I had an agent in 20022003, but she couldn’t sell my first book because editors didn’t know how to market it. So I wrote the second novel, which is now the first book in my Wayfarer Trilogy. Things became even more difficult last year trying to secure an agent. Turner Publishing was the first one I submitted to, and has to its credit fourteen New York Times best-selling authors, and is listed in the top eleven fastest-growing small publishers. The acquiring editor at Look for information about a live reading Turner Publishing said my novel was of The Secret Language of Women at the “sensational,” something this author dreamt of hearing for years, and I Lighthouse Point Library in the new year. secured a three-book deal for my trilogy. y horoscope predicted I’d write a novel. I was born in the year of the horse. After I’d completed my MFA at Florida International University, I began writing my historical literary novel The Secret Language of Women. The kernel of the novel was a short story entitled, “The Rain.” I’d written it as part of my thesis, in graduate school. This collection of short stories eventually was published as The Other Side of the Gates. To this revised short piece, I then added material based on family stories. I had to do a great amount of research—one caveat I learned after much delay—be careful not to get stuck in the research. I had to remind myself frequently that writers write. Although I don’t know if any of the narrative I was writing was truly part of my grandfather’s history or living existence in China, it made me ponder and pursue. I explored a line of thinking that made material for a good plot. I visited China and was enchanted by Beijing, formerly Peking, which held Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. I also became enthralled with the city of Guilin, a painter’s paradise surrounded by magnificent mauve hills and cliffs, many waterways and markets. I became spellbound

e in the Fish Tales department of Lighthouse Point Magazine love getting photographs of fish caught during trips away from home waters. Especially fish rarely seen here. Sarah LaSorsa went out with her husband Vinnie LaSorsa for a quick afternoon run to Montauk Point, New York. According to Vince, a local legend of sorts in the fishing community of Lighthouse Point, the family had just arrived to the Point where they saw hundreds of striped bass boiling. We were curious about these “boiling” striped bass so we searched in YouTube and sure enough, schools of striped bass will erupt on the surface near Montauk and often very near the shore within reach of beach fishermen. Vinnie said they quickly caught dinner and headed home with Sarah’s 23-pounder.

Butternut Squash Gnocchi with Sage Brown Butter Makes 4 servings
INGREDIENTS 1 16-ounce package of gnocchi 3 tablespoon unsalted butter 4 sage leaves, finely chopped 1½ tablespoon olive oil 1 pound butternut squash, diced into 1-inch cubes (you can buy these pre-cut to save time) pinch of salt pinch of pepper 1½ teaspoon nutmeg 1 teaspoon cinnamon fresh grated Parmesan cheese DIRECTIONS Pour the gnocchi into a boiling pot of water. Boil for 2-3 minutes or until gnocchi floats to the top. Drain, and set aside. Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring continuously, until golden with a nutty aroma, 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat and pour into a bowl to stop the butter from burning. Add sage into the hot butter and allow the flavors to infuse. Set aside. Add olive oil into a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add butternut squash and season with salt and pepper. Sauté, stirring regularly, until squash becomes tender, about 10 minutes. Once the squash is tender, reduce heat to low. Stir in the gnocchi and brown butter and toss to coat. Finish the dish by adding nutmeg, cinnamon, and additional salt and pepper. Adjust spices to your liking. Transfer to serving bowls and top with fresh grated Parmesan cheese.

EQUIPMENT candy thermometer 8×8” baking dish (or similar size) parchment paper DIRECTIONS Line an 8- inch square metal baking pan with 2 long sheets of crisscrossed parchment so that excess paper hangs over the edges. Boil the apple cider in a saucepan over high heat, stirring occasionally, until it is reduced to a thick syrup about a ½ cup in volume, 30 minutes. Once the apple cider has reduced, remove from heat and stir in butter, sugars, heavy cream and vanilla. Return the saucepan to medium-high heat with a candy thermometer attached to the side. Let it boil until the thermometer reads 252 degrees, about 5 minutes. Quickly remove caramel from heat and stir in the salt and cinnamon. Immediately pour the caramel into the prepared baking dish. Knock the pan against the counter a few times to help air bubbles work their way out. Let the caramel set for at least two hours or overnight. Once the caramels have cooled to room temperature and are firm, use the parchment paper sling to transfer the block to a cutting board. Using an oiled knife so the caramel doesn’t stick, cut the caramel into 1-inch squares. Top with a sprinkle of sea salt for serving. Tip: Store caramels in an airtight container or bag at room temperature. If you place them into the fridge, they can become extremely tough to chew.

TO THE POINT The Garden Lady
Ready, set, plant! BY DONNA TORREY
T
he time you have been waiting for is finally here; it’s time to get your gardens ready to plant vegetables. If you are new to South Florida, then you may be a little confused. You see, here, it’s “opposite world” from the rest of the continental U.S. Here, we have tropical summers, and our winters resemble a “Northern” summer. One of the reasons that I love South Florida so much is that there is never a gardening ”down” time. It’s grow, grow, grow, 365 days of the year. Here’s a list of some of our favorite vegetables that were off limits during the summer but that we can grow now: Tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, collards, broccoli, arugula, cabbages, squashes, melons, cucumbers, okra, onions, leeks, beans and peas. Our options will increase in the coming months, peaking in January, so now is a good time to get the beds ready by adding lots of compost, or other organic amendments and beneficial nematodes to the soil, especially where plants such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and okra are planted, as the root knot nematodes adversely affect their growth. Place your veggie gardens in at least eight hours of direct sun for maximum success, especially tomatoes. Leaf crops can take a little less. With good soil, full sun, and organic fertilizers, you are off to the right start. Place your containers or beds where you have easy access to water, If you keep your plants as healthy as possible and

Sharpen your saw
BY CRAIG HALEY
PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE JOURNEY, DON’T RUSH TO GET THROUGH IT
T
here is an old story of two men in the woods cutting trees down. After two hours of non-stop chopping, the first man decided to take a break to sharpen his axe. The second man said he didn’t have time to stop chopping because of all he had to do that day. After an hour break to sharpen his blade, the first gentleman came back and cut down three times as many trees. What’s the moral of the story? Take time to sharpen your own saw. People today are busier than ever. It seems we have more and more to do and the days and weeks go by in the blink of an eye. This is all the more reason to make time for improvements. We all need to sharpen ourselves physically, mentally, and emotionally to be at our best. If we don’t we may find ourselves run down and frustrated with no drive or belief that things can get better. So what can you do to sharpen your own saw? Here are a few ideas to get you started: EXERCISE REGULARLY: Take time to do something physical every day. Going to a class for a workout (martial arts, spinning, Yoga, etc.), going for a run or walk, and riding your bike are all good options. It’s amazing how much better and more refreshed you feel after a good workout! You feel more optimistic, confident, and motivated to make the day a success. I’ve never regretted the workout I did do, but I always regret the workout I didn’t do that I was supposed to. READ, STUDY, AND PLAN: It’s amazing what good information can do to your mindset. Reading a good book or listening to an audiobook can give you great ideas that could change your life. The late author Jim Rohn said, “Life change starts with education, not motivation.” Planning can be on the most valuable skill sets to develop. Experts say that 1 minute in planning can save 10 minutes in execution. Plan out your days, weeks, and months. Plan out work projects, put them in your calendar and get to work.

The late author Charlie “Tremendous” Jones said the two most dominant influences in your life are the people you surround yourself with and the books you read. I believe this to be 100 percent true and this one quote has had a huge impact on my life, level of happiness, and success. TEN TIPS ON HOW TO STAY CONNECTED TO YOUR GROWING TEENAGER
Up until a few weeks ago, sports used to consume my fourteen year-old son’s existence. If he wasn’t attending practices, or having fun playing basketball, baseball, or soccer, he was watching sports or playing a sports video game. We expected one day a girl would enter his life and captivate his attention; and now it has begun! The one positive feature is my husband and I no longer find ourselves reminding him about his hygiene. If anything, our son cares too much about his attire and which deodorant, hair gel, and mouthwash to use. But the larger concern has shifted to navigating his world of e-communication. For example, our son suddenly wants more privacy. Lately he’s been heading to his room rather than hanging out with us in the family room. We’ve also noticed he locks his door and tells us his phone calls and texts are private. We’re concerned about being shut-out completely. What can we do that won’t violate his privacy or his trust in us? Can you give us some ideas and guidelines to follow?
Here are 10 tips to consider: 1. ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT IS A PROCESS. As your son matures, different developmental issues regarding relationships become prominent. Focus on negotiating healthy boundaries and communications at home. These include oversight of his telephone, computer or any other electronic devices. Since you pay the accounts, let your son know that you have every right to oversee and review the content of his texts and all other communications. Make sure you have explained what cyber-sexting is since this form of communication is against the law for minors. This is a new frontier. You will need to stay involved and know what sites he uses, what apps are on his phone, total volume of minutes consumed, as all of this will be periodically monitored. This is non-negotiable. Also explain other restrictions, such as not using profanity or sending photos sexual innuendos and not texting after midnight. 2. BE AWARE OF YOUR COMMUNICATIONS. It’s important to speak in a tone that is caring and composed, but also one that is firm. Furthermore, studies show parents who ask open-

ended questions, listen and refrain from making assumptions foster healthier relationships. Certainly, there will be times you need to say “no.” Even if your son claims you are being unreasonable, do your best to state how your “no” is based on wisdom, past experiences, and knowing what problems can easily occur. 3. KEEP THE RIGHT PERSPECTIVE AND BALANCE. Soon your son will have his first foray into dating. First, you know your son, so be careful not to confuse privacy with secrecy. He could be shy or unsure of himself and he can gain confidence speaking without your presence. Certainly, you do not want to create a problem when one may not exist. Based on what you’ve shared, your preteen son may not be as devious as you’ve conjured up in your mind. Hopefully, you’ve already spent time discussing your family’s values and beliefs, so he’s well-aware of your views on dating, social etiquette. Be ready to discuss his questions about romance. 4. SEPARATE THE FACTS FROM YOUR SITUATION. Remember, it’s exciting to be the object of another’s interest, yet the majority of early adolescent relationships are short-lived. Crushes are exhilarating but like fireworks, the spark and pizazz can dissipate quickly. Whether this is the case or not, you don’t want to appear controlling [CONTINUED ON PAGE 46]

[CONTINUED FROM PAGE 44] because it undermines your son’s sense of autonomy. Yet, you don’t want to be so uninvolved that he takes foolhardy risks. What you want to achieve are the opportunities for him to practice and develop constructive and positive interpersonal skills. Of course you need to stay tuned using your eyes, ears and most importantly, parental intuition. 5. SET HEALTHY BOUNDARIES. It’s still important for your son to maintain good grades in the midst of his new romance. Any teen can lose perspective, forget to do their homework, stay up later than intended, which then affects their ability to concentrate and focus in school. You need to set rules regarding phone time, online screen usage, and when the phone must be turned off. Otherwise, texting can go on throughout the night, disrupting his sleep. Dating can have a powerful pull in your pre-teen’s life, but it’s not all that is going on. If you start to see test scores or grades slip, you may need to impose tighter phone restrictions. You have the right to withhold privileges if you see changes that disturb you. 6. BE RESPECTFUL. Your son is no longer a little boy, but at the same time he’s not a grown man either. Loosing the parental reins by adhering to his request for privacy is one of the steps in building trust as he matures. An adolescent needs to demonstrate that he can adequately handle himself with greater self-reliance and less dependency. But, if you notice an uncomfortable change in his behavior or interactions, you can no longer remain silent. 7. BOYS HAVE FEELINGS TOO. Teach your son that sharing feelings is manly and not soft or weak. Angry feelings will happen and need to be expressed in words, not inappropriate or hurtful behaviors. What matters most is guiding your son so he learns how to channel, communicate what is going on and take responsibility for his demeanor rather than minimize, ignore, or blame you or someone else. 8. CHAPERONING EARLY OUTINGS. This could range from seeing the same movie or sporting event—but from a respectful distance. Once you feel comfortable, your son can arrange to go out with a group of friends. One of your guidelines should be that solo dating is not permitted at this age. What you want to do is foster social interaction and reduce any pressure for early sexual activity. Right now, his dating should be based on social acceptance, newness, and conformity. 9. YOUR TEEN STILL NEEDS YOU. No matter how confident, or mature your son appears, he’s at the beginning of his first romantic relationship. Expect to see ups and downs. Don’t expect your teen to be skilled at listening, being empathic or compromise. Early relationships are characterized by misunderstandings and unrealistic expectations. If you have been good role models of healthy communication, there’s a good chance he’ll display these qualities too. 10. SEX EDUCATION IS AN ONGOING PROCESS. Please don’t underestimate the importance of discussing the process of dating and sex and proper conduct. If your son doesn’t obtain the correct information from you, based on your beliefs and values (even with some degree of awkwardness or discomfort present, as such feelings are normal) then who will he turn to in his time of need?

f course, We know that eating three to five servings of fruit and vegetables a day is good for us. But did you know that vibrant colored produce give us the greatest health benefits? It’s true; the compounds that
give fruits and veggies their bright colors also make them nutritious. – And it’s when you eat a balance and variety of colors; that you get the most out of your servings. It’s the pigment called anthocyanin which gives red and purple produce their color. And when you pick a nice variety of

purple-ish produce, you get a wide assortment of antioxidents and nutrients. And variety is what you want. Eat strawberries, beets, and kidney beans; and you get folic acid. Eat cranberries, raspberries, grapefruit, and red bell peppers, and you get vitamin C. How about cherries, figs, and tomatoes? Eat these to get potassium- a mineral that can help to lower blood pressure. Beta-carotene is the red-orange pigment which has vitamin c, potassium, folic acid, and bromelaine. Now, oranges might be the most common fruit we eat for vitamin c, but you can also get it from orange bell peppers, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, peaches, mango and papaya. And to get the bromelaine which is necessary for digestion? Don’t forget to eat your pineapple. Chlorophyll is the dark green pigment found in leafy greens. Just think kale; romaine, lettuce, spinach, and collard greens. These are high in vitamin A, and they’re a great source of calcium. If you’re dairy-free, you may want to double-up on these. Remember; vary your greens, because kiwis, green bell peppers, broccoli, and cabbage can give you vitamin C, as well. The truth is, eating a variety of produce is easy; you don’t have to remember the different pigments when shopping. Just keep your eyes (and mind) open, and think colors of the rainbow! And remember that the richer and more vibrant the colors, the more nutrition you’re getting from your servings. Here’s to a month of colorful entrees. Bon appétit! “ROBOTIC SURGERY FIXED MY KNEE AND HAD ME BACK ON THE COURSE IN NO TIME.” Jim went to the Joint Replacement Center at Broward Health North suffering from severe osteoarthritis in his left knee. Nothing he tried had worked. There he learned about Robotic Joint Surgery, a less invasive type of partial knee replacement. He also met the highly trained and experienced medical staff that would be taking care of him. It was a no-brainer. Within days of the surgery, Jim was walking unassisted. Within weeks, he was back in full swing.

What is probate? WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT BY MARTIN ZEVIN, AT TORNEY
P
robate is a formal court proceeding to distribute assets when a person dies. Probate can occur with or without a last will and testament. Probate is necessary in Florida when a person dies owning any type of property (real estate, stocks, bank accounts, etc.) in his or her name alone without any named beneficiaries. For example, if a husband and wife have a joint bank account and one of them passes away, there will be no probate necessary because the survivor still owns the account. However, if the survivor then passes away and has not named a beneficiary on the account, that asset would
have to be probated. A bank will allow you to designate beneficiaries with a form called “payable on death,” “transfer on death,” or “in trust for.” Similarly, if a person has a brokerage account either in joint names or with a named beneficiary, that account will not have to be probated but will go automatically to the beneficiary upon the death of the account holder. Therefore, it is possible to avoid probate on most assets by simply designating beneficiaries.

However, real estate is different. It is not advisable (for legal and tax reasons) to add children’s names to a deed. If a home is owned jointly by a husband and wife and they both die, their heirs will need to go through the probate process. This can be avoided if the property is owned through a revocable living trust. Probate in Florida generally takes nine months to a year. It involves filing the original will (if there is one) and preparing initial pleadings requesting that the court appoint the personal representative designated in the will in a court order called “letters of administration.” Once the letters of administration are issued, it is required that there be a publication in the newspaper, primarily so that any creditors can put in a claim against the estate. This would include credit card debt, unpaid hospital and doctor bills, unpaid funeral expenses, etc. Florida law requires that no assets can be distributed for the first ninety days from the date of first publication. If the only asset that is being probated is the home of the deceased, the court can be petitioned to declare the property homestead, thereby exempting it from claims of creditors. Florida Law entitles an attorney to charge up to 3% of the gross value of the assets that are being probated. A lawyer can charge less than the 3 percent but not more if the fee is based on a percentage. Lawyers can also charge an hourly rate if the client (the personal representative of the estate) agrees to substitute the hourly rate for the percentage. However, it is definitely preferable to agree to a specific percentage, which may be negotiated below the 3 percent; otherwise, there is an unlimited ceiling for an hourly rate. The entire probate process can be avoided by creating a revocable living trust and transferring via a quit claim deed any real estate owned in Florida (or other states) to the owner as trustee of the trust. Martin Zevin is available to discuss wills, trusts, estates, probate and is available for free consultation regarding personal injury claims or car insurance coverage. F
or several years now insurance companies are requiring property owners to replace their outdated Federal Pacific, Zinsco/ Sylvania and recently some Challenger electrical panels in order to obtain insurance. In some cases they will allow these panels to remain, but at a premium price. One of the electrical panel manufacturers makes a retro-fit buss assembly that fits into an existing panel. It is UL approved and also approved by the insurance companies as well as our local electrical inspectors. The existing panel enclosure needs to have some minimum dimensions to allow for room for the new buss system. The dimensions will need to be sent to the manufacturer and they will custom make the buss and a matching door. This process takes a few weeks to do, but, as electricians work on more electrical panels, they will learnwhich panels are more popular and be able to stock them in the event someone needs them in a hurry. There are several advantages to using these panels. The biggest being the mess it makes to remove the old panel from the wall. Sometimes there is a need to cut the wall open to get to the conduits to shorten them to fit into the new panel. The wall will usually need to have some patching done to fill any gaps around the new panel. Once the wall is dry from the patching, it will need to be painted to match the existing wall. The retro-fit panels are more expensive than a new

Bulb replacement We have done a couple of jobs where we have replaced fluorescent lamps with LED bulbs. These lamps are similar to the fluorescent tubes, but they do not require a separate ballast to operate. These bulbs save serious money and last 10 to 50 times longer. Some of the more advanced LED fluorescent replacement bulbs offer dimming capabilities, which could be useful in locations where dimming is desirable. One example would be offices where computers are operating and board rooms where projectors and screens are used. The prices for these bulbs are steadily coming down but the cost to replace is quickly recovered savings from lower electricity costs now a great time to convert. “Beth came up with a great idea for the ones we’ve bestowed with advanced brains,” Seymour says. “We call them humans. And Beth has created an Applause Gene. They’re going to hear applause inside themselves.” “So?” “They’ll hear it inside, they’ll crave hearing it from others!” Beth says. “This will motivate them to do great things! The gene will lead to great innovators, great thinkers, great doers!” “And great leaders!” Seymour says. “Leaders who can begin unifying people, bringing people together faster than on other planets.” “I’m not sure of that,”Rudy says. “It is unique, I’ll give you that. Planets with life, in every universe, have six genders. That’s one of the reasons we insisted on only two when we first started working on this.” “Right,” Seymour says. “A male and a female. Fewer genders, fewer squabbles. And not so much copulating. We figure we’ll pick up three or four million years in development.” “Yes,” Beth says, “but according to Seymour, only the female gender gives birth. TO THE POINT Tidbits & Trivia
October
should be called
December
AND IT SHOULD COME WITH ITS OWN CALORIE COUNTER FOR THE DAYS AHEAD
BY JAMES TERLIZZI
I
n the Roman calendar, October is the eighth month. “Octo” means eight. Hence, October. Then, along came the busybody Gregorians, who moved October to the tenth month. They liked to move months around, but didn’t change the names. Since the Latin for 10 is “decim,” October should have become “Decimber.” Note the spelling. (No idea why the “i” became an “e.”) December then would have become “Duedecimber,” as the 12th month. Next time you’re having cocktails with your Gregorian friends, ask them how they came by their calendar fetish. This concludes our Latin lesson for today. On October 1, 1896, rural free delivery (RFD) of mail was started. It took weeks or even months to get your mail, but the service was free. Now, mail service is expensive, but it takes only weeks or months to get it. Progress! Folklore tells us that when deer are in gray coats in October, we should expect a harsh winter. Looks like we’re in for a “doozy.” I contacted Macy’s, Neiman Marcus and several others, and they all say deer are buying coats in record numbers. In Yellowstone National Park alone, they placed an order for 100,000 coats in 50 shades of gray. They even made a movie about it. October has become a dietitian’s nightmare, serving as National Cookie Month, National Chili Month, National Pizza Month and National Dessert Month. The 14th is Chocolate Covered Insects Day, which I believe was added to provide some protein. The first presidential telecast from the White House took place on October 5, 1947. This resulted in such a torrent of political hot air over the decades it created global warming. The scary thing is, if all of our elected officials suddenly shut up, this could trigger another “Little Ice Age,” far worse than warming. For sports lovers, it doesn’t get any better than October. Football is in full swing, the NBA is rolling, hockey pucks are flying and baseball hosts the World Series. This also is the month when Valium sales to women reaches its peak. Here’s some good news for autumn babies. Research suggests that those born between September and November are more likely to live to 100 years old than people born in the other months of the year. This doesn’t mean much to me, for when I was born (November) God gave me a list of things to

accomplish before I died. Right now, I am so far behind I may never die. Astrologically speaking, you are classified as a “peacemaker” if you were born in October. This seems to be true. If you look up “evil birthdays,” you won’t find anyone of evil note having been born in October. According to Mark Twain, October is one of the most dangerous months to speculate in the stock market. The other months are: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, November and December. I would be remiss if I did not mention “Oktoberfest,” the best excuse to drink beer ever invented. It originated on October 12, 1810 to honor Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. Christopher Columbus paid tribute to Oktoberfest by discovering America on October 12, 318 years earlier. How did he know? Finally, October 3 is my wedding anniversary. I have been married for 56 years. If I had committed murder, I’d be out by now.

SHOPING FOR A CAUSE ISLAND WATER SPORTS’ DAYTIME RADNESS BENEFITS DEERFIELD BEACH NATIVE GIRL

Ask any teenager or 20-something around town if they know what Daytime Radness is and the answer will surely be yes. Since the 1980s, Island Water Sports has been hosting this event and its predecessor, Midnight Madness, in and around its famous shop on Deerfield Beach. What started as a giant end-of-season clearance sale has morphed into an unbelievable community/ fundraising/surfing/skating event, which, over the last four years has raised over $60,000 for a local cause and/or family. This year’s event on October 24 promises to be no less grand and will benefit Deerfield Beach native Carly Magnuson and the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA.) FARA, for short, is the non-profit organization dedicated to finding treatments and ultimately a cure for this disease most people struggle to pronounce. According to FARA’s website, “Friedreich’s ataxia (FA) is a debilitating, lifeshortening, degenerative neuro-muscular disorder. About one in 50,000 people in the United States have Friedreich’s ataxia.” Carly was diagnosed at age five because her parents noticed that her hips weren’t quite in line. At first the doctor thought it was scoliosis, so Carly was put in a corrective brace, barely an inconvenience
to Carly’s activities. Her oldest sister Jessica recalls how she would endlessly pitch balls to Carly to help her practice her batting skills for the T-ball team. The Deerfield Dolphins also benefited from Carly’s swimming skills, and Carly continued to enjoy her favorite pastime; surfing.
The Island Water Sports connection Surfing in Deerfield Beach is a huge part of the connection Carly’s family has to the family who owns Island Water Sports. Carly’s father Lee Magnuson worked almost 35 years as the Captain of the Lifeguards for Deerfield Beach, and volunteered leading Christian Surfers, a youth group his daughters participated in. He became friends with Kirk Cotrell, the original owner of Island Water Sports, whose children were also part of Christian Surfers. The two families became friendly. After Kirk’s passing, the store was passed to his wife and three children. Today, the three siblings Cheyne, Karly and Linsey Cotrell run Island Water Sports. They are still friends with Lee and wife Helen’s four daughters, Jessica Coote, Emily De Souza, Carly and Haley Magnuson.
The big day In conjunction with Calvary Chapel of Fort Lauderdale, whose benevolence fund will match every dollar raised, Island Water Sports raises funds through private donations and merchandise sales. 100 percent of the profit goes to the cause. They also sell VIP tickets to this free event, which allows ticket holders to skip the line at checkout, which can be about 300-people long. The day-long event sees over 10,000 visitors and features events such as skateboarding competitions.
Fundraising Carly has done more than her fair share to help FARA with research and fundraising. For the past five years, her family and friends have bicycled for

team “Carly’s Cruisers” during “Ride Ataxia,” a fundraiser on the hilly roads of Cleremont, Florida. This year it will be on November first. Carly has also participated in two clinical trials, one in Philadelphia, the other in Tampa. This required several uncomfortable trips to each location, weekly blood draws, and restrictions on things like taking a simple Tylenol. Her dad Lee remarked on how strong Carly is to do this, saying, “She’s a real trooper. She’s unstoppable.” Although the result of the second trial isn’t out yet, new information is always coming to light on this disease. With that in mind, Carly also does everything she can to keep herself physically, mentally and emotionally strong enough that one day she might benefit from new treatments.
Carly’s story After gradually losing her ability to balance, and needing to undergo surgery to attach a rod to her spine, Carly decided to leave Deerfield Beach High School in 10th grade and do online school. That proved a little dull for her lively personality, so she returned for 11th and 12th grade with the aid of a wheelchair. Since then she has become a bonafide artisan, painstakingly crafting macramé and beaded keychains, bracelets and necklaces bearing the slogan “Cure FA”. She has made them for family, friends, and
supporters, and she will be selling them at Daytime Radness. Carly’s passions extend well beyond the keychains: she still enjoys going to the beach every weekend with her family, only now she floats on the specialized beach wheelchair instead of a surfboard; she has dabbled in modeling for a local swimwear company called Indie Swim; she goes to the First Christian of Pompano Beach every Sunday, where her father is an Elder and her mother is the Director of the day school; she goes on her family’s boat where her sisters prop her up on an aquatic bean bag chair; she shops with her sister Haley, and tops off the day with a Starbucks Frappuccino. Her current favorite indulgence; she plays with her protective Chihuahua Charley and her three beloved nephews; and most frequently, she does physical therapy with Kurt and Linda Otten at their Lighthouse Point Atlantic Rehab. Through the years of working with Carly, Kurt and Linda have supported her on so many other levels as well. These are the things and the people that keep Carly afloat, the power of which cannot be underestimated. Jessica admiringly noted, “She’s always smiling, never complains. She’s the most easy-going, happy, beautiful girl.” After spending time with Carly, I had to agree. She never stopped smiling and maintained a light-hearted, open demeanor, despite everything. Carly is truly a beautiful spirit.
Daytime Radness Be on the lookout for details about Daytime Radness, and please plan to attend. It’s not only a great community event that’s fun and free, it’s a fundraiser for an extremely worthy cause that doesn’t get much attention, but affects one of our own. When asked what she misses the most at this point, Carly had to say it was the water – the ability to swim and surf in the water that surrounds us. We take this for granted, but Carly cannot. Let’s join the extended family that is the Magnusons and the Cottrells, and show our support for Carly Magnuson and FARA by attending Daytime Radness. Surf’s up! FIC TION BY WINI GLUNT
It was all part of the fun,
but exactly whose fun?
VERY STRANGE THINGS ARE HAPPENING AT THE HISTORIC SAMPLE-McDOUGALD HOUSE IN POMPANO BEACH.
SOME SAY IT’S HAUNTED.
THIS IS THE STORY OF HOW IT HAPPENED.
A trip to the beach. What could be better when you’re seven years old and ready to discover things on your own? Shells, sand, and beautiful ocean waves that welcome you with their gentle curl. The beach was wonderful. “Keep up, Penny, we’re headed to the fall carnival on the boardwalk. I don’t want to lose you in the crowd.” Well, there was nothing better. “Okay, momma,” she said, chasing her mother and leaving the shells behind for another to discover. Where she was going, shells would be the farthest thing from her mind. She was going to the carnival, and the carnival only comes to town once a year. This was something special and it gave her the chance to discover different special things, like caramel apples, Ferris wheels, friendly clowns, and a huge cache of prizes her skills could win on a whim. This was kid paradise and she was ready to embrace it with her family by her side. “Two adults and two children please,” her father told the man in the box as he slid his magical plastic card into the slot. “Enjoy the show” was the man’s only response. As the family walked off into the carnival, Penny turned around to get a better peek at the mysterious man. He was pressed against the box and he tilted his head down which gave his eyes a more menacing look. He wore a dirty white buttondown shirt and black suspenders. His once-friendly clown face paint was now smeared and melting down his face. It looked like he got caught in a storm and never bothered to fix his makeup. Instead of a bright rainbow wig, atop this man’s head sat a very old top hat. It had patches and scratches, tears and tatters, but it still had a place to rest; right on top of his greasy, slicked back hair. Once this distorted jack-in-the-box saw her gaze up at him, he gave her a crooked smile and lifeless wave. Penny’s eyes widened and she unintentionally gasped right before she whipped her head back around. A few seconds later, when she felt a little more brave, she slowly turned her head to look back, just one more time, at the man in the box. To her dismay, he was no longer in his box. No longer feeling brave enough, she gripped her mother’s hand a little tighter and kept her gaze looking straight ahead. “Excited, Penny?” her mother felt her daughter’s hand wrap tighter around hers. “What would you like to do first?” She looked around for a few seconds to determine what would be the most fun, and hopefully, take her mind off the mysterious, vanishing man in the box. The boardwalk carnival looked gloomy. The fog seemed like it would never lift and it left the air feeling stagnant and cold. When she was on the beach a few minutes ago, she felt the sunshine warm on her face, but here, the sun was hiding and she felt cold. Nothing seemed inviting. Then she saw it; a glorious, shining clown head the size of a moving truck. It was covered in colorful lights and towered above the crowd. This clown’s head was happy, unlike the man in the box. If anything was going to get her mind off of him, it would be this thing. She pointed and looked at her mom with hopeful eyes. “Can we go in there?”

“The funhouse? Sure, baby girl,” She had her her mother replied, as she looked big brother at the giant clown head. “The sign says that only children can go in, with her Penny. So you’ll go in with your brother, ok?” and he was She nodded in accordance as she a whopping let go of her mother’s hand, and headed inside. The entrance was twelve years through the clown’s huge mouth, so she stepped up onto his snake-like old. Nothing tongue and headed into its throat. Once she stepped onto the giant scared him, revolving tunnel, she would no and right longer be able to see her parents, but she wasn’t scared. She had her now, nothing big brother with her and he was a whopping twelve years old. Nothing scared her. scared him, and right now, nothing scared her. So she stepped onto the revolving tunnel platform with her brother and watched as her parents disappeared behind the clown’s throat. They were surrounded by bright colors and playful carnival music. There were stairs that led to nowhere, wobbly bridges, and obstacle courses that had big hanging punching bags and long sparkling tassels streaming from the ceiling. The funhouse filled their senses with an array of vibrancy. There were metallic walls, polkadot floors, and stripes on everything. It was easy to get distracted and forget the direction you were headed, let alone, the direction you came from. It was all part of the fun, but exactly whose fun? Penny was being tossed around by the punching bags like a boat on the ocean and she began to lose sight of her brother. “Rex, wait for me,” she called out to him. Struggling to get out of the thick forest of streamers, she ran to the other side only to be greeted by her reflection in the hall of mirrors. Dozens of Pennys everywhere she looked, but not a single Rex. She slowed her pace down to admire the mirrors and her reflections in them. Some made her look taller. She liked those mirrors. Some made her look stubby. She laughed at those. There was even one that elongated her body from head to toe and side to side. She called that mirror the wall mirror, since it turned her tiny body into a walking talking barrier. Happily going from mirror to mirror, peering into the reflections to examine the differences between reality and fun house. She stepped in front of one that seemed to do nothing at all, but she wouldn’t accept that. She was determined to find a difference. She started at her feet, but they looked ordinary. Her legs were still as skinny as ever, and nothing seemed to change in her torso. Her shoulders were still small and her face was the same face that looked back at her in the mirror at home. She got closer to examine the finer details. She stared at her eyes in the mirror, but nothing changed. This was just a lame mirror, just like the ones she had at home. She noticed a blur
of something black and white in her hair and began to pat it down, thinking it was fuzz and hoping it would fall out. It was still showing in the mirror. There was nothing in her hair. Nothing. That’s when she realized the blur wasn’t on her, but behind her. She tried to remain calm, but there was so much fear in her big hazel eyes. She stared at the blur in the mirror and began to slowly lean to the side. The blur was not a blur at all. Jack was out of his box. “Penny,” the music began to disappear as his voice echoed in the funhouse. He was as sinister sounding as he looked, and he was swimming in her head. She was drowning. The man in the box with the greasy hair and crooked smile was standing right behind Penny, and he knew her name. Was he listening to me and my family ever since we came to the carnival? Her eyes dilated and began to swell with tears as she violently turned around to face her fear, but there was nothing. “Where are you?” she asked herself in disbelief, not prepared for the answer. She decided to take one last look at the average mirror. Slowly turning around, Penny stared at the mirror, mouth agape, tears flowing. She didn’t see her reflection anymore. The man in the box was standing in its place. She floundered backward and tripped over herself, spilling onto the floor. Her watery eyes glued to his. And that’s when it happened. The man in the box, now the man in the mirror, began to step out of the glass and break the bounds of reality. “Why are you so scared of me, Penny?” He asked as he slithered out of the frame, “that’s not very nice, Penny.” His crooked smile quickly turned into a spine-tingling glare. Penny began to crabwalk desperately away from him, but it was too late. He was free. Stumbling to her feet, Penny began to run. “Rex!” She squealed for her brother as she made her way back through the maze. The colors on the walls began to run and bleed
and the patterns started to move under her feet. She couldn’t tell if this was because of her tears or if it was the product of a nightmare coming to life. She came to another revolving tunnel and without realizing its motions, fell down hard, scraping her knees on impact. The salt water her eyes were producing made it harder and harder to see as she stood and tried to regain her balance and sense of direction. Just then, a hand reached out behind her and grabbed her tiny little shoulder. She screamed the loudest, shrillest scream of true terror and then the voice to which the hand belonged began to speak. “Penny, it’s ok, it’s me, I’m here. I’m sorry we got lost in there. Are you ok? What happened?” Rex sat with Penny outside of the revolving tunnel, but she couldn’t speak through her sobs. Relieved that her brother had found her, Penny began to start feeling the pain from her knees, and the floodgate on her tears was released. Rex had assumed she was crying because she fell, and as long as that got her out of the funhouse, she was fine with that. She just wanted to be reunited with her parents outside on the boardwalk and away from the man in the box. “I think I know the way out, just hold my hand this time, Pen.” She grabbed her brother’s hand and didn’t let go until she saw her mother and father standing on the boardwalk outside. Once she was patched up and all the kisses from her parents healed her wounds for the time being, her father took her to one of the carnival games. Her mother and brother were off on one of the roller coasters. She was not yet tall enough for those rides. There was some hope that she would be tall enough some day. Her father was a tower and her hero. He was good at these pointless carnival games, too. It’s how he won over Penny’s mother all those years ago, and now he was determined to win a prize for his daughter. Determined to make her smile and have a good time at this carnival. He led Penny to a stand full of beautiful porcelain dolls

adorned with the most stunning dresses. She had always wanted one of those dolls, and today she would have one. By her father’s side they walked up to the balloon dart stand full of dolls. From behind the wall of balloons stepped a very tall, very disturbing looking clown. He was dressed similarly to the man in the box, but didn’t bother covering his head with a dilapidated hat. His makeup looked fresh, like he just plastered it onto his face a few minutes ago. The smile he painted on stretched from ear to ear in an unnatural swing, yet you could still spot his scowl underneath. His eyes had giant black rings around them like he hadn’t slept in days, and the big blue nose he was wearing didn’t add any appeal. Penny was glued to her father’s side. She wasn’t taking any chances with this one. Her father handed him the money in exchange for three darts. In order to win a doll for his doll, he had to pop three balloons with the three darts. As her father was taking his aim and throwing his darts, Penny kept her eyes locked on the clown. He stared right back. Pop! Pop! Pop! “Which one do you want, Penny?” Asked her father, but before she could answer, the clown chose for her. Without ever looking away from Penny, he reached his hands above him, like a serial killer would raise a hatchet before the kill. He grabbed a doll that was hanging above in the rafters of the stand and handed it directly to her. She could see a very off-putting smile emerge under his painted one. She didn’t like that. “It’s OK, baby girl, you can have it” her father said to her as she hid behind him. She reached out one of her hands to grab it while the other was still gripping her father’s hand. She swiftly grabbed it and stepped right back behind her father. She mumbled a mouse-like, “thank you,” and they walked away. She looked toward the coaster her mother and brother were riding, but she felt the clowns stare at the back of her head. She felt like his eyes never once left their target. She was the target. She was right. Once the family reconvened, they all decided it was time to head home. Though it had only been an hour or two, they could see their daughter was not a big fan of the carnival, and their son just wanted to get home and play the new Xbox game he got earlier that day. So home they went. Once Penny was back in her sanctuary, the experience she had at the carnival seemed a thing of the past. She had a new doll that needed attending to. A shelf was to be cleared and a name was to be picked immediately. She grabbed her little stepping stool, since she was so small, and took down a few of the toy horses she had lined up. For now, their new home was the toy chest. She grabbed her doll and gently placed her on the shelf. This was to be the new guardian of Penny’s room. “Your name is going to be Evelyn,” she declared. She sat back on her bed and looked up at the doll on her shelf, proud of her dad for winning it, and proud that she made space for it and chose a name all by herself. A strange thought occurred, however. Why this doll? Penny had her
hopes set on another doll with a beautiful purple parasol and matching dress. So why did the clown hand her this doll? She was equally as beautiful, but what was so different about this one? She started to have an eerie feeling in the pit of her stomach, so she decided to leave Evelyn alone for a while before she let that feeling settle in. After relaxing with her family and eating dinner, Penny went back to her room. She blindly greeted Evelyn and made her way to the toy chest. Then she stopped. She looked at Evelyn and noticed her head was turned to one side. “Mamaybe I did that when I was putting her up there” she tried to convince herself. She went to grab her stool and placed it in front of the shelf. She stepped up onto the stool and was met with the gaze of her doll, who was now looking straight ahead. Staring at her owner. Startled, Penny stepped off her stool carefully and backed out of her room, never taking her eyes off the doll. “Rex,” she whispered to her brother down the hall, still staring at Evelyn. “Rex, come here, please!” She stood still and patient, waiting for her brother to pause his game and come to her room. Never once taking her eyes off the doll. “You moved, I know you did,” she said to herself. “What’s wrong, Penny? Why are you just standing out here in the hall?” Rex asked as he walked to his sister’s room. “Those clowns were evil and they gave me that evil doll! She moved, Rex!” “Penny, you’re still a little freaked out, that’s all. Your mind is playing tricks on you. That’s what happens when I watch scary movies behind mom and dad’s back.” “But I saw her.” “You only think you saw her. I know you didn’t enjoy the carnival, but just calm down and get some sleep. I promise you’ll be OK.” As Rex made his way back to his room, Penny slowly walked into hers, watching Evelyn very closely. She sat on her bed, took a deep breath, and closed her eyes. When she opened them, she saw Evelyn sitting on the shelf, just as she was before she closed her eyes. Feeling a little more at ease, she got ready for bed and asked her parents to read her a book so she could fall asleep. And she did. She was awakened by the sun peeking through the blinds in her room. She rubbed her eyes and blinked a bit to adjust to the new day, and when her eyes came to focus, she shot up in her bed at the sight of Evelyn on her bedside table. “H-how’d you get here...? I-I bet it was Rex,” she tried to reassure herself. “Rex,” she called out, “ why did you do that? That was so mean.” “Do what?” He inquired. “You know...” “No I don’t. Just tell me what happened. What do you think I did?” “You mean, you didn’t put the doll next to my bed?” She said softly. “Come here, I’ll show you,” she said as she grabbed her brother’s hand and dragged him to her room. When they got there, she stopped dead in her tracks. Evelyn was back on the shelf, right where she left her last night. “I-I swear she

was on my table! Rex, she was right there.” She pointed to the spot where her doll was sitting that morning. “You need to get your eyes checked. That doll hasn’t moved since the last time you told me she moved. I’m gonna go eat breakfast now.” Penny rushed to the other side of the room, grabbed her stool and took Evelyn off the shelf. She held her a full arms length, grasping the back of her dress with two fingers, as if she was taking out the trash. She dropped her in the toy chest, closed the lid and put some heavy books on top. “You’re staying in there from now on,” she declared as she walked to the kitchen to meet her brother and parents for breakfast. The whole day she kept herself busy. She did arts and crafts, she swam in the pool, she played with the family cat, and even won a few games of go-fish against her father. She was having a much better day than yesterday, and she even got to eat her favorite lunch, tomato soup with goldfish crackers and half a grilled cheese sandwich. After lunch, Penny wanted to play dress-up with her mom, but she knew that required going through the toy chest. “Mom,” she asked, “would you go get the clothes in the toy chest for me... I-I just don’t want to go in there.” “Why not? What’s in the chest, baby girl?” “I just don’t really like that doll dad got me from the carnival, so I put her in the toy chest... so she wouldn’t come out.” She admitted to her mother with some hesitation.
“That’s all right, Pen. I’ll go get the clothes, just sit tight,” she assured her daughter. And she did. And upon her mother’s return, they played princess and drank pretend tea in their pretend castle. When they were finished, and all the clothes and accessories were folded up, her mother brought them back to the toy chest, just as Penny had asked her to. “You know,” her mother told her, “It’s okay to be scared sometimes, but you shouldn’t let that stop you from doing things you like.” “You’re right, b-but how?” “Just think of something that would scare whatever you’re afraid of. I hear porcelain dolls are afraid of hammers and cement sidewalks. They’re afraid of silly things like that.” “Why are they afraid of hammers and sidewalks?” “Well, Penny, those things can break porcelain, and that’s what the doll is made of,” she explained to her daughter. Penny smiled at the thought of something so silly. A fear of hammers and sidewalks. She laughed and hugged her mother. She felt better than ever about Evelyn, and she was sure there would be no more problems, and after an early dinner, she retreated to her room. She removed the books from atop the toy chest and placed them back on the shelf. She was going to be brave and take her mother’s advice. Nothing would scare her. Not right now. That night, Penny was snuggled in bed, fast asleep. She was tuckered out from the busy day she had. At precisely 2:32am,

the lights unexpectedly flashed on. The brightness of the lights woke her up. She was confused and half asleep still, but she rubbed her eyes to shake the sleep off. When she did, she sat awake in a silent panic. There sat Evelyn, right next to her on the bedside table. “I know what you’re afraid of, so you don’t scare me anymore,” she lied to the porcelain creature staring at her. And just like that, the lights flicked back off. She could faintly make out the face of the doll in the dark, and it looked angry. She quickly reached for her tableside lamp, and when she turned it on, Evelyn was gone. She looked around the room and found the doll perched on the shelf again, her head positioned toward Penny’s bed—staring at her. In that moment, Penny felt threatened by the lifeless doll on the shelf. She did what she felt she had to. Penny quickly ran to her stool, positioned it in front of the shelf and, similar to taking out the trash, took the doll between her fingers and ran to the garage. Hammer in hand, Penny got rid of the threat. It woke the household up. Her mother, father, and brother ran toward the commotion in the garage to discover a satisfied Penny and a destroyed Evelyn. “This isn’t quite what I meant, Penny,” her mother stated plainly. “I know, but I’m not scared anymore,” she replied with a smile.
A few weeks had passed, and with it came the holidays. Today was Christmas, and the family was gathered around the tree for the gift-giving festivities. The thought of clowns and dolls no longer scared Penny. Today, she was actually hoping that Santa would have brought her a handmade doll that was made to look just like her. One at a time, the family opened there gifts. The pile had shrunk to one, and it was addressed to Penny. “What’s t hat?” her mother whispered to her father. “I don’t know, I thought that one was from you,” he whispered back, as they both curiously watched their daughter tear the wrappings off. The box was plain and taped shut. She opened the lid and immediately threw the box to the floor. “H-how’d she get here?” she asked in a shaky voice. Not even a scratch on her face, Evelyn laid in the box, waiting to be placed back on her shelf. “Who sent that? There’s a note. What does the note say, Penny?” Her mother asked frantically, as the family sat in silence. Terrified, Penny reached for the box and grabbed the note inside. She read it aloud. “I watched while you slept. I watched while you were awake. I know the bad things you did to her. Keep the doll in one piece, for goodness sake.” Wini Glunt is the Assitant Editor at Lighthouse Point magazine. She does not own any porcelain dolls and avoids carnivals.

NAPOLEON BONAPARTE BROWARD, JR.
GUNRUNER TO
GOVERNOR BY BEV SANSUM
I won’t keep you in suspense: Broward County was named after Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, Jr. Yep, his father was Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, Sr., so named, perhaps, in an excess of hero worship for the Corsican dictator who had the chutzpah to proclaim himself “Emperor.”

IN 1816,
John Broward (Jr’s Grandpa) applied for, and was granted, 16,000 acres along and around the St. John’s River in what is now Duval County. In order to get all this good dirt and timber, one had to agree to plant stuff and erect and operate a sawmill, becoming filthy rich in the process. (There’s always a catch, dagnabit!) At this time, lots of free land was ceded to folks by the Spanish (who ran things then) but these land grants were usually in the neighborhood of 300 acres—some more and some less. But,16,000 acres? C’mon: Who was kissing what? Grandpa John Nathaniel Broward at age 29 married 16-year-old Margaret Tucker of Camden County, Georgia, on October 25, 1824. This fecund lass bore ten kids: five boys and five girls Some of the boys were christened with famous monikers such as Washington, Montgomery, and—you guessed it—Napoleon Bonaparte, who became Sr., the father of our hero Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, Jr. Other than one girl named Florida, the others got the old standbys like Helen and Margaret. Back then, rich girls couldn’t really do much except maybe a little needlework, and five girls presented a knotty problem: How to get them all off your hands and into the arms of suitable (meaning rich) husbands? If you’re wondering about this fondness for the grandiose naming of sons after Napoleon Bonaparte, one must travel to South Carolina for the French connection. John’s father, Huguenot François Brouard, skedaddled out of Catholic France with a few hundred other persecuted Huguenots (Protestants) and rolled ashore in South Carolina in 1764. Alors! Switch out the “u” in Brouard for a “w” and voila! Instantly Anglicized! And, you guessed it, “François” translates to the English “Francis.” Francis Broward was no slouch and distinguished himself fighting in The Revolutionary War with hero General Pulaski (who earlier saved George Washington’s life) in the Battle of Savannah. He and New World wife Rebecca Sarah Bell later made their

way to Jacksonville, Florida with children Charles, Frances, Elizabeth, and John Nathaniel. In 1820 (or ’21 by some accounts), by treaty, the Spanish got the heave ho and Florida became a US Territory. It didn’t take long for Grandpa John Broward to get the political wheels turning in Florida, getting himself appointed a Justice of the Peace, serving as Grand Juror (whatever that is), and appointed a Colonel in the Militia without ever having served in the army—any army. (For the rest of his life, he was addressed as “Colonel,” keeping to—or perhaps originating-- a fine old southern tradition of Colonels who were never Colonels: Think of Kentucky Fried Chicken Colonel Sanders.) After acquiring even more political clout, he finally became Senator for Duval County in 1845 when Florida officially became a state. You can find him at his eternal rest in Jacksonville, Duval County. (William P. DuVal, territorial governor, 1822-1834, succeeded Andrew Jackson. Duval County was named Duval County the same year DuVal became governor in1822 – an astounding coincidence.) Napolean Bonaparte Broward, Sr. wedded New Hampshire transplant Mary Dorcas Parsons in 1851. She was 16 and he was 23. They had eight children, Hortense, Osceola, California, Emily, Montcalm, Mary Dorcas, and Josephine, and, of course, our boy, Napoleon Bonaparte, Jr. When Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860, Florida quickly seceded from the United States. No dummies, these Florida boys; they quickly figured out that Lincoln’s Republican Party would abolish slavery. This threat prompted many of the brave Broward boys to join the Confederate army. After the war, fearing the worst, the Broward/Parsons men moved women and children to safety in White Springs where they had a house. One hopes it was a very large house, considering

the size of this clan It must have been an arduous westward trek--70 miles on dirt roads in horse-drawn carriages. White Springs was Florida’s first tourist destination and is still popular today with rafters, hikers, and nature lovers with its mossy oaks and the wild Suwannee River. Alas, in 1862 the Union Army and Navy (also known as Damn Yankees!) invaded Confederate Florida, leaving a swath of destruction wherever they passed. They shelled and burned the Napoleon Broward, Sr. plantation. Napoleon Jr. was 5 years old and brother Montcalm only 3. All the kids were hustled off to their Uncle Charles Broward’s intact house (Originally, John Broward’s 16,000-acre plantation) where an abundance of aunts could herd and feed them. Napoleon Jr.’s mother, Mary Dorcas, buckled under the stress and strain of war and took to her death bed in 1869 at the age of 34. About a year later, an exceedingly bereft Napoleon, Sr. spent the night at the cemetery grieving over her grave, caught pneumonia and speedily died in 1870 thus leaving a passel of orphans to a penurious fate. Uncle Charles Broward moved to Jacksonville to practice law. You’d think his Harvard law degree would guarantee immediate success in a town not used to so much weighty erudition. Not so. He struggled for some time before paying clients started lining up. The aunts soon followed Charles to Jacksonville with their gaggle of nieces in tow. That left 14-year-old Napoleon and 12-year-old Montcalm to manage the farm and directed to show a profit. They worked like slaves (irony intended) to make it pay but—surprise, surprise—they failed dismally. Undaunted, the plucky brothers made their way to Mill Cove in 1873 to work at their mother’s brother, Uncle Joe Parsons’ lumber camp. The work was grueling and dangerous. Any memories of
happy, lazy days on ye olde plantation were long gone. Once the privileged and pampered leisure class, they were now dirty and sweaty, with aching muscles from long, back-breaking hours in Uncle Joe’s saw mill. Fortunately, Uncle Joe also owned a steamboat in the busy New Berlin river port and in 1875 Napoleon went to work on his steamboat. Napoleon, Jr. found his vocation—river rat! In 1876, he took a little time out to finish high school in New Berlin where he boarded with the lighthouse keeper. In New Berlin, Napoleon met Captain David Kemps, who owned and also built boats. One such boat being the Kate Spencer that he worked on. There he met and befriended Captain Kemps’ daughter, the 13-year-old Georgiana Carolinas (Carrie) Kemps, who was no doubt smitten by the handsome 19 year old. That same year Napoleon wangled a job as ship’s mate and sailed away to New England where he met his Parsons relatives. He must have liked them because he hung around New England for two years learning more about the sea and October 2015 | L I G H T H O U S E P O I N T

ships than he could ever have learned on a Florida river. When he arrived back in Florida in 1878 he worked on Captain Kemps’ seagoing tugboat, and became Captain Kemps’ partner. At 26, he proposed to and married the delighted 19-year-old Carrie Kemps on January 6th, 1883. He now applied for and received his pilot’s license. This entitled him to lead ships safely through hazardous waters into port on the St, John’s River. He raked in exorbitant amounts of money for this specialized service. This happy state According to the U.S. Census of affairs was short-lived: Carrie died in childbirth Bureau, Broward County on October 30, 1883: She was not yet 20 years old. has a total area of 1,323 Their baby son, Napoleon Bonaparte III, died several square miles (3,430 km2), weeks later. of which 1,210 square miles A distraught Napoleon withdrew and made (3,100 km2) is land and 113 his way once again to New England. He returned square miles (290 km2) to Florida in late 1884 where he first piloted the (8.5%) is water. steamboat Captain Kemps for his father-in-law, but he soon partnered with Kemps on the steamboat Kate Spencer. Captain Broward did very well for himself hauling mail, cargo, and passengers to Mayport at the mouth of the St. John’s River. Annie Isabell Douglass, a frequent passenger, must have noticed the big good-looking 29-year-old Captain Broward. She caught his eye, too, and they married in 1887 when Annie was 20 years old. Napoleon had finally found a “breeder,” as the Browards are wont to do and Annie produced a litter of eight—six of them girls. In 1888, a prisoner escaped when the dim-witted Jacksonville sheriff moved him from a jail cell to an office in a commercial building. The miscreant simply waited until the guard fell asleep and strolled out to freedom. Scandal! Uproar! Governor Perry asked for and got the dumb sheriff’s resignation. Captain Broward was already well-known and the Democratic machine recommended Napoleon for the vacancy. After initially demurring, he was appointed sheriff on February 27, 1888. Napoleon wasted no time shutting down most of the gambling in town. Gambling was immoral and clearly the devil’s work. This did not make him popular with the folks he put out of business or the droves of men who

blew into the bustling port city and who liked to gamble--what the hell else was there to do? The real devil’s work was Yellow Fever that roared in to town that same year. Yellow Jack hiked a ride to Jacksonville via a Tampa man, Richard McCormick. They quarantined him, disinfected all of his belongings, and burned down the Mayflower Hotel where he had been staying. Anyone arriving from Yellow Fever country such as Tampa, Plant City, and Manatee were swiftly arrested and thrown into quarantine at Sand Hills with Mr. McCormick. Many people trying to leave town were not welcomed elsewhere and were trapped in Jacksonville. To halt the deadly epidemic, the streets were covered in lime and bichloride of mercury (yikes!), and ammunition was fired into the air thinking it might kill the microbes. Barrels of tar burned nightly. Naturally, none of these precautions had any effect except to poison people with mercury and other toxins. In a city of thirteen thousand, there were five thousand confirmed cases of Yellow Fever with at least 427 deaths. The Jacksonville yellow fever epidemic of 1888 caused a political crisis, too. Jacksonville was a black city but white voters still controlled. However, many whites did manage to flee to safety in the hinterlands during the epidemic and the black voters, who didn’t--or couldn’t-flee gained the majority in the November elections. Napoleon Broward and other Democrats lost!! But, wouldn’t ya know it, the real winner was declared ineligible and Napoleon Broward was once again appointed sheriff. The state government changed the rules so that only the Democratic Party, which was white, could win. On a steaming hot July 4,1892, employees of Anheuser- (This Bud’s for you!) Busch had a fight. Frank Burrows, a white office worker, started calling Benjamin Reed, a black teamster, some very nasty names. The upshot was that
Reed, the black guy, killed Frank Burrows, the white guy, in a fight. Their weapon of choice—staves! Reed was arrested and jailed but that did not stop the good white folks of Jacksonville to work themselves into a lynching frenzy. Napoleon, still the sheriff, got the governor to send some militia to quell the lynch mob and restore order. Shots were fired and a couple of people were wounded. Napoleon saved Reed from a lynching but did not save him from a murder conviction. By 1893, Napoleon was missing the bounding main, his first love. He and brother, Montcalm went into business with a pair of boat builders on St. George Island and built the ocean-going “filibuster” steamship, The Three Friends. (“Filibuster” then meant a person engaging in unauthorized warfare against a foreign country.) They were approached by local Cuban revolutionaries who were trying to end Spanish rule in Cuba. They wanted independence from Spain: What craziness is that? The Cubans persuaded Napoleon to carry a load of munitions and to pick up Cuban expatriates (rebels) in Nassau. Napoleon steamed out of Jacksonville on The Three Friends’ maiden voyage. They carried 100 tons of coal, 3,000 Winchester rifles, 500 machetes, 1 million priming caps, 500 pounds of sulfur, 60 barrels of water, 2 cannons, 500 pounds of dynamite, and General Enrique Colasso. He safely deposited the whole kit and caboodle on Cuban shores. Napoleon made many trips to Cuba and several times he was nearly caught and destroyed by Spanish gunboats. The Spanish ambassador to the United States demanded that Broward be stopped and his ship impounded. Some sources say that the US did impound The Three Friends a bunch of times-- and then always released it back to Napoleon a short time later. (Maybe Napoleon occasionally needed a rest from his perilous adventures and the Americans obliged him.) Other accounts say that the US did try to stop him but the wily Napoleon always managed to elude them. He was now officially a criminal in the US and Cuba but most Floridians thought him a great hero and deservedly so. It isn’t cheap to run a dangerous smuggling operation but Napoleon was never shy about charging princely sums for his services. He made a killing! He continued his gunrunning and risky exploits until President William McKinley declared war on Spain on April 25, 1898. (Remember The Maine! and Teddy Roosevelt scampering up San Juan Hill to win the day.) The Spanish-American war was over in four months. The Americans got Guam and Puerto Rico out of it and
Napoleon got to return to his lucrative land-based businesses. By 1900, Jacksonville’s population of 28,429 made it Florida’s largest city. The 16,236 Afro-American residents comprised fifty-seven per cent of the population— and many of them were Republicans! Napoleon Broward was now a famous Florida hero and in 1900 he took time out from running his business interests to make a run for a seat in the Florida House of Representatives. He easily won—which isn’t surprising when you have no opposition. In 1901 Henry Flagler wanted a divorce from his mentally ill second wife who had been confined to an institution in New York. Henry very much wanted to marry again, but divorce was impossible. Like many enormously rich men, Flagler thought he could buy what he wanted. What he wanted was a new law that made insanity grounds for divorce. Money talks and the Florida Legislature, with Napoleon Broward’s staunch advocacy, passed just such a law. The Law was overturned in 2005. Henry Flagler was the only one granted a divorce under the new law. Henry got his divorce from his “insane” wife and immediately married 34 year-old Mary Lily Kenan. Flagler was 70. (Being rich buys you so much more than flashy mansions, oversized boats, and sparkly baubles. (Ask Donald Trump who a few months ago proclaimed on national television that he’s bought many politicians-- including Hillary. It seems politics and politicians haven’t changed.) Napoleon was sweet-talked into running for governor in the 1904 election. They told Napoleon that he was the only man who had any chance of winning against the powerful Republicans who had their strongholds in the cities. The cities were populated with rich Republicans but also many blacks who weren’t rich but were probably Republican supporters. He was also running against very rich and very powerful interests, like the

advocating draining the Everglades since the 1880s. Napoleon thought that by doing so, he could create cheap farmland for folks who otherwise couldn’t afford it. Do the words “unintended consequences” ring a bell? Certainly the term “ecological disaster” hadn’t been invented yet. Broward was attacked often and by many different people for his drainage program and for the land tax ungrateful Henry Flagler who denounced he instituted to pay for it. One newspaper noted that, “The treasury will be drained Napoleon in his newspapers. before the Everglades.” Sure enough, big bucks were sucked into the muck. A
BY MICHELE CARRASCO
s one of only five municipal libraries in Broward County, The Doreen Gauthier Lighthouse Point Library has been at the core of this community for 50 years. Founded in 1965 in a Beacon Light storefront through donations, and staffed by volunteers, the library has grown steadily through the years, many of which were under the direction of Doreen Gauthier, the “grand dame” of the library. When Doreen and I started talking about her career at her Lighthouse Point home, I was struck by her humility at every turn. She deflected praise to those around her, saying things like, “I couldn’t have asked for a more cooperative, supportive group of people. THEY made me look good.” Maybe so, but still, I was charged with writing an article on the “guru of the library,” a moniker which Doreen casually dismissed, saying that she was “old news” because she retired four years ago. Pressing ahead, I asked how it came about that she is planning the library’s 50th anniversary party, to which she humbly replied, “I guess by default. When someone was a 33-year part of a 50-year history, it seemed like a natural progression.”
OREEN IS FROM IOWA, WHERE SHE GREW UP ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. Armed with her Bachelor’s degree in Library Science and Education, and later earning her Master’s degree in Library Administration, she moved to South Florida and worked for the City of Pompano Beach Library as the Circulation Director. Shortly after, the Lighthouse Point Library offered her the Director’s position, and Doreen felt it was serendipitous to end up in Lighthouse Point surrounded by water. The library was housed in The Shoppes at Beacon Light for three years before moving to the Venetian Isles Shopping Center for more space in 1968. By 1972, the City of Lighthouse Point had taken it over, and in 1979 named Doreen as the director. During the period of 1985-1987 it was temporarily housed in a trailer on the grounds of the Trinity Methodist Church while its present location was being built under the same roof as City Hall. Between 2002 and 2006, the library was expanded, renovated, and remodeled. When the library reopened in 2007, Mayor Fred Schorr and the City Commission renamed it the Doreen Gauthier Lighthouse Point Library in honor of the director’s dedication through the last 28 years. As another tribute to Doreen’s commitment and distinction, the Florida Library Association named her Librarian of the Year in 2009. In 2011, Doreen retired; in 2012 the Mayor and City Commission named Christy Keyes as the new director. In

2014, the library won the Florida Library Association’s Library Innovation Award for its Virtual Global Story Hour program that serves over 5000 Broward County School students. This came as no surprise to Doreen, who has been impressed by the technology and outreach programs Christy has developed over the last three years. “Christy, being of another generation, has been steeped in technology.”
Looking ahead Doreen’s main goal has always been, and always will be, to increase public awareness of the library as a community center, a true focal point for learning, cultural activities, recreational and informational services. She reminded me that “we pay taxes for both the county and the city, so it takes a lot for a city to want to keep its hometown library.” Because she is so committed to this cause, she has remained active with the Friends of the Lighthouse Point Library. This group of dedicated volunteers has been commemorating the library’s 50th anniversary through a series of events that have taken place throughout the year, with “programs that have reached every segment of the reading public,” according to Doreen.

Doreen Gauthier and her “phenomenal committee” hope to attract many younger adults as well as the usual library supporters to the Gala. For those of you ready to “Party Like It’s 1965,” tickets can be purchased online at lighthousepointlibrary.com. It’s wonderful that we have our own hometown library, and even better that it was named for someone who cares so much about its past, present and future. “It was the job of a lifetime. I don’t know if I ever did NOT love my job.” When asked how much longer she plans to remain active with the Friends of the LHP Library, Doreen wryly quips, “as long as they’ll put up with me.” My bet is they’ll keep her for as long as she’s willing to stay.

No Secrets to Investment Success Many people seek the “secrets” to investment success. Is it timing the market just right when making “buy” or “sell” decisions? Is it finding “hot” stocks? Actually, these types of moves have little relevance to most investors — even the successful ones. Instead of looking for secret winning formulas, follow tried-and-true investment moves. For example, rather than jumping in and out of the market in a vain attempt to “buy low and sell high,” simply stay invested. By doing so, you can ease the impact of short-term price volatility — and you’ll always be prepared to take advantage of the next market rally. Also, don’t waste time looking for “the ground floor” of the next big thing. The vast majority of new companies won’t achieve that level of success. You’re better off forgetting about the ground floor and instead building a strong foundation of quality investments suitable for your risk tolerance and time horizon. You won’t find any shortcuts to your desired financial destination. But by taking the slow and steady path, you can work toward getting there.

CAR WASH CORNER Now is the perfect time to stop by and clean that dirty car at Mr. Squeaky’s award winning car wash!
Developed, owned and operated by the Sasso’s, a Lighthouse Point family.
MR. SQUEAKY CAR WASH is owned and operated for the past 10
years by a Lighthouse Point family. Owners Richard and Lynn Sasso, both attorneys, left the day to day practice of law to launch Mr. Squeaky, with the goal of making Mr. Squeaky one of the best car washes in the nation. Mr. Squeaky has been voted “1 of the Top 50 Car Washes in the USA” by Modern Car Care Magazine, the only South Florida car wash to receive this honor. From top to bottom, Mr. Squeaky is a family business. Their two children, Stella and Tyler, along with thousands of other kids visiting with their parents, love the multi-sensory experience of the 135’ long car wash tunnel that includes colorful soaps, a high pressure Arctic Blast rinse, soft cloth scrubs and Tornado Dryers. With washes starting at just $9, including unlimited FREE use of vacuums, there is no true competitor in all of South Florida. From Buicks to Bentleys, every car is treated with white glove service that has made Mr. Squeaky famous and the go-to place for hundreds of thousands of raving fans. Lynn Sasso explains the philosophy at Mr. Squeaky: “We wanted to create a family-friendly car wash. Our goal is to give each customer a squeaky clean car and a smile on their face!” Voted 1 of the Top 50 Car Washes in the USA by Modern Car Care Magazine Want a free car wash and your photograph in the next Car Wash Corner?
