CREATIVELY

Speaking BY SUSAN ROSSER

The Genius of Lauren Bernstein Every summer Richard and I schlep to the Adirondacks of upstate New York to see our kids at summer camp for “visiting day.” Lauren Bernstein is the camp owner and we can all learn from her. I asked myself “What if every business owner, religious leader, civic volunteer or city council member ran their organizations like Lauren Bernstein runs her summer camp?” The answer is compelling enough for me to write to you with conviction. Camp Walden is not the biggest or most beautiful camp. After spending several visiting days there over the past six summers, I’ve realized that Lauren has carefully and methodically crafted a culture that goes beyond fun summers for happy children. The genius of how she does this is deceptively simple; she picks the right staff and, more importantly, she picks the right customers. Hiring the right people, recruiting the right members for a board, or electing the best government leaders is a topic that gets extensive attention. Lauren has mastered this skill; she seeks and demands a set of core values from her staff that are absolutely essential and she does not compromise. The primary among these is a passion for inspiring and nurturing young people. Throughout my visits, I queried staff and counselors about life at camp. Without exception, they exhibit this core value effortlessly. From my experience, you can’t train people to be like this—you can only find people like this. When the kids were younger, they used to like to show off for us on visiting day. We would watch them waterski, or mountain bike or shoot bows and arrows. Now that they are a little older, they show us around camp and introduce us to their favorite counselors.

| lhpmag.com

The second part of Lauren’s genius is her ability to select the right customers. This may sound strange to some and can be difficult to accomplish if say, you own a restaurant open to the general public. Most businesses and organizations have options about how to spend limited resources to attract new customers or members; so many have much more control than may initially appear. I overheard a story, told in a humorous manner, that Lauren spends most of her time on the telephone with parents of prospective campers— talking them out of coming to Camp Walden. She has developed the skill of identifying and recruiting the parents and children that will blend with harmony into her organization. Most leaders look for high-performing staff and lots of customers. This is fine, but Lauren’s formula for a staff that has the same set of core values as the customers they seek is one to ponder and adapt to one’s situation. That concept; “blend with harmony into her organization” will now be with me forever. Lauren touches and improves the lives of everyone she meets. She attracts others to help her do this at her camp. She has the support of many I should mention and I’m sure there were mentors in her life she would acknowledge. But brilliant lessons from others are nothing without the courage and commitment to execute those lessons consistently. I know most of my readers are not in the business of bringing joy and inspiration to young people like Lauren, but our local school districts would be better if her principles were enthusiastically embraced. The local business groups would be better at passionately promoting the success of area businesses. City councils would be better at cultivating a strong vision for the success and prosperity of their communities. Florida is electing a new governor this year. I suggest we recruit Lauren Bernstein for the job.

BIG HEARTS AND LOTS OF FULL BACKPACKS

John Knox Village (JKV) residents and staff truly showcase their caring hearts when it comes to the education of local youth. Recently, more than 550 backpacks were filled and distributed by a dedicated group of retired resident teachers through JKV’s Sharing and Caring Program. In addition to backpacks, pencils, notebooks, folders, crayons, markers, erasers, glue, index cards and rulers, other essential supplies were purchased and added to the backpacks. Each year, generous residents donate backpacks to JKV employees for their children, ages kindergarten through 8th grade. “This was our 12th Annual Employee Back to School Drive, and we were thrilled to contribute 155 backpacks for the children of our employees,” said resident Dee Davis, Chair of the Resident School Supply/ Backpack Committee. As part of the outreach efforts, the Sharing and Caring Program held its own annual backpack drive. One recent morning before school started, a number of JKV employees were working hard to fill 400 backpacks. The backpacks were distributed to students at

Charles Drew Elementary and Cresthaven Elementary in Pompano Beach, as well as the Broward Children’s Center. This Center specializes in helping infants, children and young adults with special health care needs . “A heartfelt thank you to the generous donation of book bags, classroom supplies and lunch bags by the staff at John Knox Village. Our staff, parents and students thank you for taking the time to organize the ‘Welcome Back to School’ drive for our most deserving students,” said Josh Kisten, Principal at Cresthaven Elementary. “We are so blessed to work for an organization that puts so much back into the community,” said Kathryn Viau, Director of Resident Services. JKV’s social accountability initiative continues to follow its mission of making vital connections to social organizations in the community.

Beware Threats from Above Dr. Melanie Hecker sent this photograph of an adult broad-winged hawk . . . on her patio. “In 15 years in Lighthouse Point and eight years of having birds outside, I have never seen a hawk this close to my bird cages or home. I knows residents like myself enjoy our pet birds and may even have them living part time outside. Sadly to report ,this hawk killed one of my beloved parakeets.” Many birds of prey inhabit South Florida feeding on mice, rabbits, fish, iguanas and the occasional household pet. Other species in Florida include: bald eagle, golden eagle, red-shouldered hawk, cooper’s hawk, red-tailed hawk, sharp-shinned hawk, broad-winged hawk, short-tailed hawk, Swainson’s hawk, zone-tailed hawk, ferruginous

hawk, rough-legged hawk, osprey, belted kingfisher, swallow-tailed kite, whitetailed kite, snail kite, Mississippi kite, northern goshawk, northern caracara, eurasian kestrel, American kestrel, merlin, peregrine falcon, barn owl, burrowing owl, great horned owl, eastern screechowl, barred owl, flammulated owl, snowy owl, long-eared owl, short-eared owl, northern saw-whet owl, black vulture, and turkey vulture. Each spring and summer, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) receives reports of raptors diving at people. These incidents, which are usually caused by hawks, have happened in both urban and suburban areas. Most of these events occur during the nesting season and near an active nest where there are chicks or eggs. The

raptors dive at people who come too close to the nest. The birds view those people as threats to the nest and the babies. In many cases, the birds dive at people but don’t make contact. However, there have been injuries from these birds when they do make contact. Reports show that the birds may dive at people as far as 150 feet away from their nests. All Florida raptors are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act and under Florida law. This means the birds themselves, their nests, and their eggs are protected by federal and state law. However, permits can be given to remove nests or, in severe cases, to remove the birds themselves.

The Lighthouse Point Fire Rescue Department has a new piece of equipment courtesy of the Lighthouse Point Chamber of Commerce to help them better serve the community in a waterway emergency. The new inflatable boat is used for water rescue incidents within the city as well as waterway spill incidents. This boat replaces a 25 year old inflatable boat that was prone to leaks. Fire Chief Dave Donzella says “this boat will provide quick access to the more than 18 miles of canals and open water in the city to effectively carry out lifesaving procedures or to help control hazardous material spills that can happen in the water. hristina Cerrone contacted us about this 328 pound swordfish that her boyfriend, Logan Williams, 18, his brother Parker Williams, 17, and friend Chris Kniskern, 19, caught recently. She wanted to highlight the catch but keep it a secret and we have tried to honor her wish. She gave a few details about the catch. Then, we contacted Chris’s father Tom Kniskern over a KMC Marine to get more intel. He interviewed the young men and we trust he didn’t blow our cover. The boys went out for the afternoon aboard Logan’s family boat “Invincible” as they do quite often. The three young men seem to be avid anglers who are frequently on the water. They were out 18 to 20 miles offshore in about 1,700 feet of water using a live snakehead for bait (it’s a fish—not an actual head of a

snake. Where they got the snakehead is a mystery as is why they were using one for bait but obviously the boys have figured this out and snakeheads attract swordfish.) They hooked a sword on the first drop in about 20 minutes of waiting. (Swordfishing involves lots of waiting so 20 minutes is nothing.) Our valiant anglers all fought the beast for over two hours then wrestled him into the boat. (We get the feeling this was amusing to watch). They ran back to the Lighthouse Point Marina for weigh-in and pictures. Congratulation to Logan, Parker and Chris on their fine catch. Skillet Salmon and Cucumber Dill Sauce

While the TV was on in the background, my ears perked up between yelling at the dog and chasing my toddler. I glanced up and saw something about salmon, cucumbers, red onions and dill. Immediately I thought how delicious it sounded. Sort of like a homemade tzaziki sauce (which is delicious with salmon). So I whipped this up and it was so super easy and so delicious. I will be making my salmon this way all the time from now on. Serves 2 INGREDIENTS 2 salmon fillets. skin removed 1 cucumber, sliced very thin 1/4 of a red onion, sliced in half, sliced thin 3 tbsp fresh chopped dill, or more 1/4 cup sour cream 1 tbsp white vinegar 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice salt and pepper 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp garlic powder

METHOD Slice cucumber and red onion. Chop dill. In a bowl, whisk together sour cream, vinegar and lemon juice. Add in dill, cucumbers and red onion and toss. Coat salmon with olive oil and sprinkle with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Heat skillet over medium heat. Add salmon and cook about 3 minutes on each side. Remove from heat and let sit for a minute or two. Place a heavy spoonful of cucumber dip on plate and place salmon on top.

INGREDIENTS 1 Tofouyan brand whole wheat low carb wrap (found in the deli) 1/2 cup cooked chicken, shredded 1/4 cup red bell pepper, chopped 2 tbsp red or white onion, chopped 1 handful fresh spinach, chopped (or you can use broccoli florets) 1/4 cup crumbled goat cheese 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat the oven to 375. Throw the wrap (pizza crust) in the oven alone for a few minutes. It will bubble up, and then take it out. This gets it a little toasted so it doesn’t get too soggy with all the toppings. Let cool for a couple minutes. Spread BBQ sauce evenly on crust. Add peppers, onions, chicken, spinach. Then top with shredded mozzarella, goat cheese, and sprinkle with crushed red pepper. Place in oven for about five minutes or until the sauce is bubbling and the cheese is melted.

Senior Shout Out

A Touch of Autumn BY EMILY JANCURA

O

ctober is here and it’s time to embrace the coming cool weather, and dive into fall. And it’s beautiful! The skies are either a gorgeous kind of cloudy or a bright, clear blue. Scarecrows are being dragged out of the garage and little ghosts are being stuck into the ground. And if you listen carefully, you can almost hear the crinkle of candy wrappers. Yes, it’s time to jump into the fun; roll up your sleeves, and get to work—the decorating kind of work that gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling when it all wraps up. You know, like fluffing up the bow on the pumpkin wreath, and then stepping away to admire it from the road. Or checking the condition of that nice cinnamon broom we brought last year (did it keep its smell?) Great! Lean it beside the front door. Fall decorating goes on and on; but it’s the best kind of busy work—the traditional kind. And who doesn’t love traditions? My mom loves decorating for fall with candles. It’s so easy. She practices a nice little tradition every year; she makes fall centerpieces for the living room—and lights them up. But, to be safe, she uses “flameless votive candles” that won’t catch fire (AC Moore, Big Lots, $3.00 - $8.00). They soften the room, giving it a beautiful ambiance, and when arranged alongside some colorful fall items, they make lovely centerpieces. She likes to give it a “Florida feel” and puts petite oranges and pomegranates around the centerpieces. What I like about centerpieces, is that you can make them on a whim—you already have almost everything you need.

30

L IG H TH O U S E P O I N T

| lhpmag.com

Start by looking around the house for something the candles can be arranged in; clear glass, vases, modern lantern, even flat serving trays do the trick. Next, put the candles in place and decorate around them with whatever you like; green leaves (or red if you can find them), pine cones, acorns or berry twigs…If you have a piece of fabric, tie it around the base of a few, and make a bow. Then switch the votives to the “on” position, dim the lights, and admire. Now you can make a pot of tea and enjoy a cup by candlelight. Fall-perfect! Lights are great indoors, but if you want to light up the night, try decorating outside with lanterns. They’re sweet and whimsical, and you can find them in craft stores. They bring us “back” to another time, when things seemed simpler. Just border them around the edge of the patio or walkway, and then place a votive candle in each. They are a beautiful addition to any landscape, and you can’t even tell the flame is just a light. They offer a nice, inviting glow, and you don’t need anything else! Fall-perfect! There are so many creative and traditional ways to decorate. You really can’t go wrong as long as what you’re doing gives you that warm, fuzzy feeling. I hope you and your families all enjoy autumn and all the traditions it brings. Emily Jancura is the owner of Florida’s Finest Home Care for seniors. TO THE POINT Skin Care

Tanning Beds

BY MELANIE S. HECKER, MD, MBA

THE LATEST PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE

T

here are indications that the current approach to minimize the use of indoor tanning beds is working. However, dermatologists are still stressing to patients that more work needs to be done on this front.

THE SCIENCE There is growing scientific evidence that the use of indoor tanning devices increases the risk of skin cancer. Research by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) found that when the first exposure to tanning beds is prior to the age of 35 years old, this increases an individual’s lifetime risk of melanoma by as much as 75 percent. This led the World Health Organization to classify tanning devices that emit ultraviolet (UV) light as known human carcinogens. Many population-based studies since then have looked exclusively at the use of indoor tanning beds and they have confirmed the findings of the IARC that frequent indoor tanning increased the risk of melanoma with use of UV light emitting devices. Other recent studies have shown that sunscreen use prevents skin cancer and this counters a common argument used by the Indoor Tanning Association (ITA) that the use of sunscreen causes cancer. Their argument is based upon very old data using sunscreens that blocked UVB rays and not UVA rays. However, since current sunscreens available on the market protect against both UVA and UVB rays, their argument is no longer valid. As a matter of fact, a recent study out of Australia shows that the frequent use of sunscreen decreases the development of squamous cell carcinoma, Basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma.

36

L IG H TH O U S E P O I N T

Lastly, the science is very clear that the argument to use tanning beds to synthesize vitamin D is bogus. The spectrum for vitamin D synthesis is UVB rays; while tanning beds only provide UVA rays. So this dispels the argument that tanning beds help patients make vitamin D. It is also well know that taking a pill is a more controlled, safe and inexpensive way to supplement vitamin D.

TANNING IS AN ADDICTION? More recent studies are showing that indoor tanning is an addictive behavior, much like smoking. Excessive indoor tanning has the clinical characteristics of classic addictive disorders and is frequently associated with anxiety, eating disorders and tobacco dependence. This leads patients to continue tanning at salons despite having a diagnosis of malignant melanoma. This is a serious cause for concern of many dermatologists. n efficient multi-tasker with a quick mind, John Bromfield of Peak Performance in Pompano Beach answers calls, writes clinical notes, adjusts equipment, manages staff, and tells jokes while instructing and assisting patients. Even though he may be treating several patients at Peak Performance at the same time, John does not miss a trick. He succeeds at giving everyone individual attention and guidance. This is one guy that really does have eyes in back of his head. Proficient in math and science, with an interest in how the body works, John graduated from Michigan State University in his home state with a degree in physiology. As a personal trainer to 15 physicians, he was able ask them their feelings about the medical profession. Only three of them told him they would do it all over again and become doctors. The remaining 12 disagreed as they saw the limiting direction medicine was going in Michigan. The huge auto industry workforce was the driving force for cost-effective managed care. Those conversations sealed John’s decision not to become a physician. As a licensed physical therapist and an avid hockey player, the Cleveland Clinic recruited John in 1996 for the job as Physical Therapist for the Florida Panthers. A year after the Panthers went to The Stanley Cup finals, John was on the ice practicing with and treating the team at the then Panther practice ice rink right here on US1 and later at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise. In 2000, John moved back to Michigan where he worked in clinical development for a national company. Since returning to South Florida three years ago, John has been operations manager of all three Peak

He treats patients at the Pompano location only. John has been the ball boy for the Michigan State Spartans for the past 28 seasons. He goes back to Michigan at least six times a year. He is well informed and can have a conversation about any subject. As well as playing hockey, John enjoys “good eats” fishing, weight lifting and spending time with his 10-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter. Like their dad, his children are strong in math and science. John truly loves helping people and it shows. TO THE POINT It’s Electric

Where There’s Smoke... WHAT’S UP WITH THE NEW SMOKE ALARMS? BY AL SIEFERT

E

ffective July 1, 2014 all one-family and two-family dwellings and townhomes undergoing repair, or level one alteration as defined in the Florida code, may use smoke alarms powered by 10-year non-removable, non-replaceable batteries in lieu of retrofitting such dwellings with smoke alarms powered by the dwelling electrical system. Effective January 1, 2015, a battery powered smoke alarm that is newly installed or replaces an existing battery-powered smoke alarm must be powered by a non-removable, non- replaceable battery that powers the alarm for at least 10 years. The battery requirements of this section do not apply to the fire alarm, smoke detector, smoke alarm, or the ancillary component that is electronically connected as part of a centrally monitored or supervised alarm system. This was provided to us from the Miami-Dade County Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources. There are a couple of issues with this new requirement. First, these new smoke alarms have not come to market as of the time of this writing. I called two of my distributors and neither of them knew anything about the new alarms. Secondly, these new alarms do not need to be powered by the 120 volt house power. This creates a discrepancy with the code. While the existing code requires all smoke alarms to be in sleeping areas and their adjacent hall ways, they also need to be interconnected so all alarms will sound alarm in case any alarm is triggered. While I like the fact that there is a wireless 10 year smoke detector coming to the market, I feel their best use would be in apartments and small condominiums where one alarm would be heard everywhere in the unit. I do not feel they should replace the existing 120 volt, battery back-up system we are currently using in our homes. The reason for this is that many of our homes are 2000 sq feet or larger in size. In many cases, one alarm will not be adequate for homes, especially the ones with a split bedroom layout or two stories or more in height. The new alarms will be good because they have a ten year life, but the interconnected system that allows all of the alarms to sound off when there is smoke in any part of the house is much better. TIRE STORES

It’s time for New Year’s resolutions. This year, why not make a few financial ones? For starters, resolve to boost your contributions to your retirement plans, such as your IRA and your 401(k). These tax-advantaged accounts can be good options for your retirement savings strategy. Also, try to reduce your debt load. It’s not always easy, but the lower your debt payments, the more money you’ll have available to invest. Here’s another resolution: Build an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a liquid account. Such a fund will help you avoid dipping into long-term investments for emergencies, like a new furnace or major car repair. Another key resolution: Make sure your protection needs are being met with the proper amounts of life and disability insurance. Finally, resolve not to overreact to market volatility. You’ll help yourself greatly by following an appropriate investment strategy in every market environment. Pest Management | Rodent Control Work to turn these resolutions into realities. Your efforts could pay off well beyond 2014.

TO THE POINT Legal Matters

All in the Family HOW TO AVOID PROBATE ON YOUR HOME

C

BY MARTIN ZEVIN

urrently, you may own your home alone or jointly with your spouse. Your intention is to leave your home to your child or children when you and your spouse pass away. If you only have a last will and testament (or if you die without a will), then your children will need to go through the probate process in order to inherit your home. Therefore, many people choose to put the names of their children on the deed; however, this can often be a mistake. If you add a child’s name to the deed, as a joint tenant with right of survivorship, this could affect your ability to claim a full homestead exemption. In addition, you lose the full control of your property and can only sell it if your child signs all closing documents. If your child files for bankruptcy or has a judgment entered against him or her, your home can be adversely affected. Most lawyers, recommend against having your child as a joint tenant with right of survivorship. Another form of ownership is called a “life estate deed.” This involves a quit claim deed transferring the property to your child but retaining a life interest. This allows you to continue to claim your full homestead exemption and gives you exclusive possession of the property for the rest of your life. This also avoids probate when you die; your child only needs to record your death certificate and will then own the property. However, if, god forbid, your child dies before you, then his estate will be the owner of the property and probate will be required. In addition, there are two types of a life estate deed: regular and “enhanced” (also sometimes referred to as Lady Bird). The regular life estate deed will require that your child join in any sale, financing or other changes on the deed; therefore, you have lost complete control and cannot take your child’s name off the deed if you choose to do so. The enhanced life estate deed, however, gives you the sole right to sell the property during your lifetime or make any other changes

42

L IG H TH O U S E P O I N T

| lhpmag.com

to the deed without the permission of your child; therefore, this is definitely the preferable form if you choose to do a life estate deed. There is very specific language that is required on the deed; therefore, you should not attempt to do this on your own. Even with the enhanced life estate deed, however, there can still be problems in the event that your child has a bankruptcy or outstanding judgment. If your child is currently undergoing financial problems or challenges, the life estate deed may not be a good idea. The other way to avoid probate on your home is to do a revocable living trust. The trust takes the place of your will regarding your home and any other assets you choose to put into the name of your trust. At the time that the lawyer prepares your revocable living trust, you would also sign a quit claim deed transferring the property to you as trustee of your trust. If you are married, you can be co-trustees. You would still keep your homestead exemption and maintain complete control of the property during your lifetime; upon your death (and the death of your spouse), you would provide in the trust how you want the property distributed. You could always change the trust by doing an amendment without changing the deed. This not only avoids probate of your property but also avoids any of the risks involved with putting your child’s name on the deed. Whenever you are considering any changes to the deed on your home (or any other property you may own), it is important to consult with a lawyer to discuss all of the options and risks. Martin Zevin is available to discuss wills, trusts, estates and probate. He is also available for free consultation regarding personal injury claims or car insurance coverage. TO THE POINT Blast from the Past

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. So we decided to start a monthly column devoted to one photograph and fate would bring us a bad one... but a great story about the Florida origins of Pastor Dennis Redstone from Trinity Church of Lighthouse Point.

Six Weeks in a Buick THE REMARKABLE AND DIFFICULT REDSTONE FAMILY JOURNEY TO FLORIDA

P

astor Dennis, as he prefers to be called, sat next to me at lunch where I casually mentioned our new “Blast from the Past” section. His response was immediate. “My family has a whole book on our early years and even a section at the local history museum back in Vero Beach,” he offered. The book is full of photographs of the Redstone family’s early years. There is fantastic photo of a tour boat the family ran in the Vero Beach area. But, as Pastor Dennis described his family history, it’s clear that the story of Dennis’ grandparents and their 10 children traveling from Olean, New York to Vero Beach is a truly remarkable tale. This is clearly why the books author, Dennis’ great aunt Irene, titled the book “New York to Florida with Aunt Irene - The Redstone Family Story.” Picture this: In the summer of 1925, two parents take 10 children in one car with no air-conditioning and a hand-made trailer on a journey lasting six weeks. Pastor Dennis’ father Ray Redstone was only 4 years old during the trip. The excellent account of the journey is written by great aunt Irene who was 16 during the trip. Back then, Pastor Dennis’ great grandfather was a big deal in the small town of Vero Beach. Three of his adult children also lived in Vero, but none had children of their own. So, he invited his son Lee, still living in Upstate New York with 11 children, to move to Florida. The financial opportunities and warm weather were attractive, but the obstacle of getting there lie ahead. The family had a seven passenger, 60 horsepower, 1923 Buick—but they still needed space to squeeze two more children and all the family belongings. Lee sought a suitable trailer, but this was 1925 and found nothing. He was a skilled carpenter so he built one from scratch and included a bench for the two older boys. That Buick was one of the strongest cars of its day but hauling 12 people (one child was starting college so he didn’t make the journey) and the heavy trailer was no easy task. Fortunately, the speed limit was only 30 miles per hour all the way and the story says they rarely topped 25. The engine handled the entire journey during the hot July

and August months without a hitch. The tires are another matter. One would pop almost every day starting an entire ritual of disembarking on the roadside to patch the old-style inner tube. When the tubes were no longer repairable, the family would camp along the roadside while Lee walked to the nearest town. Eight times during the journey, Lee would need money wired from his father to buy another tire as the weeks dragged on. Each night, the Redstone clan would stop at campgrounds or fields along the way. Each child had his or her duty that would repeat every day as the two tents and 12 WW1 armysurplus folding cots were assembled and dinner was prepared. Everywhere they went, Aunt Irene recalled gawkers and onlookers amazed by two parents traveling with so many kids. They encountered what might be modern problems like heavy traffic going through Washington D.C. - which took an entire day - and other problems long forgotten like crossing a river in North Carolina via a ferry that wasn’t quite big enough for the big car, 12 people and a heavy trailer while all the other southbound traffic waited to do the same. The thought of that cramped car, a one-year old baby and no air-conditioning for six weeks is dreadful to consider. But according to Aunt Irene, “it was the most exciting experience of their lifetime.” Pastor Dennis’ grandfather and grandmother lived out the rest of their days in Vero Beach. TOP The only surviving photo fo the 1925 Redstone family move to Florida in a Buick and a homemade trailer. BOT TOM Family outside the Redstone home circa 1941.

Full Potential Students BY CLIFF PAGE

HOW EXECUTIVE FUNCTION SKILLS HELP STUDENTS

M

ost parents question whether or not their children are performing at their ultimate potential. I often hear from parents such questions as: • Should I push them more? • What are they are capable of? • Are they working at their full potential or just doing enough to get by? If you have asked these questions, you have the opportunity to change the direction of your child’s future. Whether or not your child is succeeding academically or is facing challenges, a concept called “executive function” could be a game changer for greater achievement at any level. Also known as cognitive control and supervisory attentional system, executive function is an umbrella term for the management of cognitive processes, including working memory, reasoning, task flexibility, and problem solving as well as planning, and execution. A person’s executive function abilities are shaped by both physical changes in the brain and by life experiences. When studying executive functions, a developmental framework or an understanding of how to scaffold information into the brain is necessary.

46

L IG H TH O U S E P O I N T

| lhpmag.com

Because the abilities of each individual mature at different rates over time, executive function needs to be evaluated one student at a time to determine a plan for that individual. My experience in the classroom gives me insight into a wide variety of situations, from students who are highly gifted to those who are very low functioning, and everything in between. The common link seems to be organizational skills. In some cases, for example, measurable improvements can be recognized through such simple changes as assistance in organizing a weekly plan book, or prioritizing and planning how to study for tests, or outlining the steps for an essay or project. In all areas of instruction, however, strategies begin with

executive function and the ways students consolidate and budget their time. My first step always is to assess a student’s place on the executive function continuum. Based on that knowledge, I teach them how to incorporate practical learning habits. I talk to each student about his or her “study plan” for a particular subject. We then discuss ways to learn with an emphasis on how to load the information into their long term working memory. One of my students was struggling with physics. His approach to learning was to listen to the lecture in class, and then go home and unsuccessfully attempt to do his homework. Ultimately, he would phone a friend or Google the answers, never actually learning the concepts. As a result, his test scores were low. In this particular case, the text book was online with an option to have the text read to him as he read along himself. Listening to the material positively affected his outcomes in a number of ways. For example, he heard the information (auditory learning), and then read the material (visual learning). By “front-end loading” the material, he was able to go into the classroom with an idea about what was being taught. This preview allowed him to better understand the concepts, and, as a result, enabled him to actually learn the information as he did his homework. Once students learn to organize, prepare and study in a way that focuses on building long-term memory versus traditional memorization, they literally hard wire their brains to function in a way that brings positive outcomes. Below are a few practice hints any parent can use to help a student develop executive function:

CREATE A CALENDAR OR DAILY PLANNER THAT INCLUDES ALL TEST DATES. The day before the test, write “80 percent” in the plan book, two days before the test write “40 percent,” and three days the test write “20 percent.” Psychologists have proven that 20 percent of a concept is absorbed the first time it is heard, building to 40 percent the second time and, finally 80 percent the third time. By noting this system in the planning calendar, the student sees a daily reminder to review prior to the test. HAVE YOUR CHILD READ THE CHAPTER SCHEDULED FOR CLASS THE DAY BEFORE, or preview a YouTube video about the upcoming concept the night before. Most core classes are linear. Particularly with challenging classes, this approach provides an excellent opportunity to front-end load new information. EMPLOY A VARIETY OF STUDY TECHNIQUES. For example, when learning landforms boys tend to be kinesthetic. One useful exercise is to print out pictures of landforms and definitions. Scrambled them and have the student pair them to create a more meaningful learning experience that requires less time, puts the information into long-term working memory, and reduces the chance the facts will be forgotten. Remember, your student is unique, so trial and error may be required to find the best combination of exercises and planning techniques to help achieve the ultimate potential. TO THE POINT The Parenting Game

Talk to Your Boys BY DR. ANDREA CORN

Dear Dr. Corn, Years ago I heard a saying that went something like this – little children step on your toes; older children step on your heart. Neither my husband nor myself ever thought our son would be so influenced by his friends, but it seems as if our well-mannered, respectful young man has morphed into a teenager we barely know. He has tuned us out and is now plugged into his friends, music, and social media. The other evening we became so frustrated after attempting to have a heart to heart talk with him about dating and sex. Chances are, we may not have handled ourselves as well as we could have, as our son just rolled his eye and made a few sarcastic remarks before walking out of the room. As you can imagine, this only left us feeling worse. We don’t consider ourselves out of touch, yet he certainly did! Our son is in 11th grade and acts as if he’s a know-it-all. Since the summer, he’s been dating a lovely young girl and he’s invited her to his school’s homecoming game. Recently, we saw some texts and overheard dating advice given by one of his friends. Those two events prompted our concern. Plus, in the back of our minds, we heard an upsetting story about one of our friend’s daughter who escaped being sexually assaulted at college by a fellow student. It was an upsetting and frightening experience for her and her family. But it made us realize more talks with our son are necessary. Within two years, he’s off to college. And, while we don’t expect him to disregard our teachings and beliefs; we can’t help but worry whose values he will follow. How would you approach revisiting this topic? Dear Concerned Parents, During these high school years, teenagers will identify, embrace, and surround themselves with the ideas, beliefs, and behaviors of their particular peer group. What is uncomfortable is perhaps your son is gravitating to individuals whose morals and values may be very different

50

than your own. Sometimes teenagers intentionally seek out friends who embody different beliefs as a way of testing established boundaries or asserting their individuality. Your son may not be rebelling, but at the same time, he may have misconceptions about his masculinity. Some boys think they have to appear tough, or rude, or at worst regard a female as an object rather treating women with the same respect they expect in return. Hopefully, you’ve had previous talks about acceptable

dating practices, including handling sexual interest, arousal, and safe sex behavior. If this topic has been too uncomfortable to discuss, you should assume he’s learning about it elsewhere. The teenage years are challenging on many fronts—socially, behaviorally and of course academically. The pressures seem greater than ever before; especially as the Internet, social media, and smart phones have opened realms that did not exist for previous generations. Now, teenagers are exposed to much more and there’s only so much a parent can restrict or contain. It’s never too late to re-open the dialogue, which may be best handled by asking, and not assuming. Despite your discomfort, it is essential to continue talking and keeping the lines of communication open for these reasons:

WHAT YOU WANT HIM TO REMEMBER: • “No” means “no— not maybe—even if a female’s verbal and nonverbal messages are unclear. Accepting and respecting a woman’s word is crucial. No male should ever take advantage of any female (as many adolescent males are bigger and stronger). This statement holds additional weight when raging hormones, peer pressure and/or intoxicants are added to the mix, altering and affecting judgment. • Sexy clothing cannot be taken as an open invitation for sexual advances; even if a teenager dresses in a seductive and alluring way. • He should absolutely attempt to stop (or seek help to stop) other boys from making unwanted sexual advances toward women. Too many stories of rape and assault involve bystanders that did nothing to stop the attacks.

It is imperative you let your son know how he should behave towards women; regardless of what his friends tell him. Do not assume that because he is a kind and friendly kid, he knows all about dating and how to behave appropriately. These are not easy conversations to have with any adolescent male. Ignoring this kind of conversation may inadvertently send the wrong impression—as if you don’t want to know and act like an ostrich with your head stuck in the sand. Despite whatever he says, it doesn’t mean he isn’t listening to you. Try and ignore the bravado. Teenagers act as if they know the score and don’t need parental guidance; yet usually they do. At this age he is figuring out who he wants to be, his likes and dislikes, as well as contemplating his future and career interests. Yet we also know, teenagers are also interdependent — meaning they need your wisdom and advice, even if it isn’t immediately followed. It may be more effective to send links for him to read online. If you are uncomfortable, worried and tense when you talk to him, the real message could get lost. What you really want is to help him realize that you are not trying to control his life, but guide him to attain greater self-restraint and control, so he can appropriately handle his own desires and actions rather than being at the mercy of peer pressure or internal forces that feel beyond his command. Ladies First WHAT IF WOMEN HAD BEEN THE FIRST WRITERS? BY WENDELL ABERN

ear Genderphobes, A few years ago, I watched a wonderful TV show on the Discovery Channel, entitled, “Who Wrote the Bible?” Fascinating. But as they ticked off some of the prophets responsible for creating the Old Testament, a very obvious fact occurred to me: all the writers are men. As I thought about it, I realized that everything written before the 18th Century is written by men: the Old Testament, the New Testament, the Koran, the Talmud, writings from ancient Egypt, Persia, Greece, Rome, anything, anywhere ... all from men. I did some research. There actually are a few women writers prior to the Renaissance. I’d never heard of them. No one has ever heard of them. And when I think about all of the laws and rules and regulations we follow today, many of which have roots that go back centuries, I am struck by another fact: my gender’s ancestors somehow believed that literacy gave them the right to dictate how the other gender should live. What if it had been the other way around? What if women had been the first writers? That said, I couldn’t resist imagining the kinds of scenarios that might have unfolded.

“Change the – listen, Sara, whatever you do, don’t encourage him. You know men. Next thing you know, they’re going to want to know how to read and write.”

Somewhere in the Middle East, around 1000 AD. Two young women meet in the marketplace. “Hey, Sara, hi! How’re the kids?” “Great, Inga. Yours?” “Well, Samuel is fine, but the little one has a cold, and you’d think it was my husband who’s sick: kids get sick, Mustafa gets grumpy.” “Tell me about it. When our kids get sick, Eli becomes an instant martyr.” “Men. What do they have to do all day, but take care of the house and the kids?” “Yeah. And then at night, they have a headache.” “Always. Now Mustafa has a new one. He doesn’t want to wear his veil when he leaves the house.” “Really? He wants to tempt every woman in town?” “Hey, don’t ask me. He thinks the laws are stupid. Wants to know why we can’t change them.”

London, circa 1750. Two women meet for lunch at an exclusive club. “So, Jean, how are things at the office?” “Going great. Sales are up. Profits are up. It’s home that’s giving me headaches.” “Martin again? “Always complaining I don’t give him enough money. ‘Food costs are up. Kids need new clothes.’ Never ends.” “Know what I told Kenneth? If he managed things better, there’d never be a problem.” “D’that work?” “For a while. Then it’s back to the same old argument.” “Not the school thing again.” “Always. Always! He says an education would make him smarter, and then he’d get some job so he could earn money and contribute. “Doing what? Ironing clothes?” “Oh, who knows?”

If you talk to Todd & Scott Bird, co owners of Paver & Marble Specialists (also known as Superior Power Washing Inc) they want their customers to be ‘more than happy’ with the work they do.

Their goal and business motto is; to design with simple clean lines that will make bold statements, and must function for their clients’ daily lives. This motto and passion is exemplified in the outdoor hardscape design work and remodeling they do for swimming pool areas, patios & walkways, driveways, water features and anything else you might consider for the outside of your home or commercial space. Being a family owned company, it allows Todd & Scott to be on all job sites from start to finish. They both say, “We provide our customers with very skilled installation and repair crews. In addition, we complete all projects in a professional and scheduled manner”. The Bird brothers have managed to co own Paver & Marble Specialists for 20 years due to their great communication skills with the client, ensuring that they follow each customer’s vision, making each job unique. Their mantra is “It’s not about getting a lot of work; it’s about doing a great job on each and every project”. However, looking beneath the surface you will see that both Todd and Scott are the product of many years of construction expertise. Their father, Jim Bird has been in the construction business for 40 years, and both sons grew up helping in his business but they both feel that their forte is in outside surfaces and hardscape. They must first understand the client’s needs in order to give each of them something that flows with the landscape of their property. It is something

the brothers are both passionate about. “The key to any project is communication. We make sure that all jobs go smooth from start to finish because of great communication”, they explained. Whether it’s small or a large elaborate job, clients rave about the Bird brothers’ ability to create outdoor masterpieces and also be on time with the schedule. (Something which is rare in their industry!) If you talk to former clients you will hear that Todd & Scott are not just talking about it, they mean it, as explained by Edward Salantrie, a Ft Lauderdale based lawyer; “I recently hired Superior to install a marble pool deck. They had to excavate my existing 800 sq ft concrete deck and extend it to 1,300 sq ft. They also integrated a 75ft retaining wall with a swooping pathway and staircase. In addition, the pool remodel consisted of a new 2ft marble coping around the pool and spa, including new glass pool tile and new Diamond Brite color. This entire project was done within 10 days and transformed my backyard in to a resort setting!! The workmanship and professionalism was remarkable”. Another client, Annemarie Mancini says “I knew from the first visit with Scott that I had made the right choice. He had such enthusiasm and vision for turning an ugly concrete pad into a beautiful brick paved patio. He was in constant communication with me throughout the entire project and the job was started and completed on time, as promised. The crew were professional and took great pride in their work. Thanks to

Pavers & Marble Specialists I have the most beautiful patio area that we can enjoy for years to come”. It is also important to know that they are a fully licensed and insured brick paver company and that they offer a 2 Year Warranty on all services and workmanship. Paver & Marble Specialists also do repairs for any pavers, solve any drainage issues, root removal and most importantly protect your new investment with their clean & seal division. Superior Powerwashing also has a special ‘Clean & Seal Green’ process that utilizes stateof-the-art equipment and industrial cleaning solutions that are environmentally friendly. Hot water and steam are used with a rotating surface cleaner to remove and kill mold, clean dirt, remove stains and impurities on brick paver or marble surfaces. Using only the best sealer products to enhance and protect pavers, and apply them with a professional grade airless sprayer that gives precise and appropriate coverage. “Design is our passion and communication is one of our top qualities. Fred Schorr wrote a simple sentence: “. . . and we’re making money from our recycled trash.” The city and many families are doing much more to recycle than in years past but those two words “making money” started a new conversation. The City of Lighthouse Point has a contract with Waste Management to pay $42.11/ton to haul trash away for residents. The contract also states that the city gets paid at least $60,000 per year for our recycled trash and more if the value of recycled materials increases. Currently, rates are low but should rates improve, recycling will even smarter. Various sources have guessed that 70 percent of the recyclable trash is placed in the proper, cityprovided bins. Essentially, everyone is being charged $42.11/ton to haul away that other 30 percent of recyclable trash that if placed in the proper bin, would be hauled away for free.

Reduction or Replacement What if we reduce the trash we generate by, for example, using canvas grocery bags instead of the single-use plastic ones? Instead of throwing away 100 plastic bags, one will just discard one canvas bag eventually. Similarly, replacing the semi-famous red Solo cup (not recyclable!) with a paper cup or plastic cup made from a plastic other than #6 (see below) can eliminate 100 percent of that one item from going into the landfill bins.

Choosing products that produce landfill trash is bad; while choosing products in recyclable packaging is financially rewarding to all.

San Francisco San Francisco faces similar trash challenges. With more residents and less space, their trash problem is far greater so they are investing in a zero-landfill campaign called “Zero Waste by 2020.” The fact is that they, as do we, are trapped in terms of space for landfills. In just a few years, our trash will need to be driven farther and farther north for much more money. San Francisco is just ahead of us in terms of urgency —but our day will come. San Francisco’s “Zero Waste by 2020” is a significant program but the essence is this: • RESTRICT AT THE SOURCE: Plastic bags are illegal for example as are other packaging products. If the city can keep non-recyclable items from entering the trash-stream, that trash won’t be going to the landfill later. • COMPOSTING: Every resident gets a recycling bin, similar to ours, and another one for compostable food and plant matter. • RECYCLING: we seem to be doing about the same as them in this category. • E D UC AT I O N: Paid city staff members go doorto-door checking the bins on the street for that day’s trash pickup. Adventures in Composting When my husband approached me about composting, I gently reminded him that I am a city girl. Composting just sounds gross, smelly and difficult. Basically, I thought he was nuts. But, he was growing a vegetable garden and needed better dirt. I have to admit, the idea of composting was more appealing to me than buying dirt— which just seemed silly. Turns out, good soil isn’t so cheap. I started small. First, I put an old Folgers coffee tub in my sink. I threw in cucumber peels, peach pits, watermelon rind—you get the idea. I never threw in any protein. The protein is what can really stink. Second, I put an old Lego container just outside the patio door. When my Folgers tub filled up, I emptied into the Lego container. I cook a lot, so I made that trip once or twice a day. Here is really the beauty of my system. I had my husband empty the Lego container into an old trash can he had retrofitted to be a composting bin. He sawed off the bottom of an old trash can and also cut out a little flap at the bottom. Then he buried it about nine inches deep in the back

HAZARDOUS WASTE

corner in the yard (out of sight.) This way, he could dump new organic material into the top of the bin. And about three weeks later, he could scoop the new compost out of the bottom. Genius. Once we realized, we were sticking to this system, we actually invested in a real compost tumbler. The tumbler is basically a garbage can on its side that you can rotate, so you can mix up the contents and dump some out when you need it. You can also upgrade from an old Folgers tub to a cute compost bucket. There are tons of adorable ones online. Personally, I still use the old bucket technique. While I have become a huge fan of composting, I would still rather go shoe shopping than buy composting supplies. Composting is nature’s way of recycling. At first, it can seem like a daunting task—not to mention sort of gross. But once you get into the swing of it, you’ll never go back. —Susan Rosser

Flattened cardboard and paper board. Yup, now you know what to do with all those Zappos boxes.

Unfortunately , some stuff just isn’t recyclable. The ubiquitous plastic red cup is made with #6 plastic and is not recyclable. Also, plastic bags, or polystyrene foam cups and containers are not recyclable.

troublesome, the staff member approaches the homeowner to help them understand what they were doing wrong and guide them toward proper trash-sorting techniques.

A Win Win Basically, our fair city can save money and in the process, help extend the life of the local landfill. The modern world of trash is actually pretty simple. Lighthouse Point residents just need to know which materials go into which bin or should go elsewhere. (The rest of what happens to all that trash is on the Internet for endless exploration.) Therefore, the challenge is one of education . . . and motivation. One soda can doesn’t sound like much. But, one can per day per resident adds up to a ton of aluminum per week citywide or over 50 tons per year. Recycling takes a modest amount of extra effort. Admittedly, it’s easier to throw everything into one bin and only take one to the curb. Children (husbands and wives) need constant reminding about what is right and wrong to recycle. And it’s easy to forget to bring reusable bags to the grocery story. Publix actually has key chain size versions of their bags to serve as a reminder. Even then, it’s easy to forget. But what if doing the right thing is easier? What if

everyone stopped buying the red Solo cups so Solo begins to offer a cup we can recycle? What if every resident put every possible ton of recyclable waste in the right bin… every week? Someone will probably say that sounds like a nanny-state or big-government telling us what we can do with our trash. However, getting paid for recycled trash while not paying to remove landfillbound trash seems worth a bit of effort… not to mention that ticking-time bomb issue of our local Mt. Trashmore and the other negative efforts on the world’s environments. Changes are coming faster than most people may realize. LED lights are advancing fast (Many are still trying to use up incandescent lights and don’t even know about CFLs). As of the time of this writing, California Governor Jerry Brown is telling the media he will sign a measure to outlaw all single-use plastic bags in his state - mostly because 37 counties already outlaw the bags and the inconsistency is difficult for vendors and patrons. The city’s contract for trash hauling will change in coming years as will technologies and materials in packaging production and recycling capabilities. Our roles as citizens of the city and the world will need to adjust with these changes but the fundamentals of reduced use of landfill-bound materials, proper elimination of hazardous items, and recycling of all other material will surely be consistent.

Typically, the best value for the money and at the top of most lists for people living in Florida is, smart control of air conditioning use and proper maintenance. For every degree a thermostat is raised above 75 degrees, significant savings are achieved. We suggest thermostats be set at least 78 degrees. Also, many times, a home’s AC runs when its occupants are not at home e.g. during work hours or while out to dinner. The easiest and most effective way to manage this is through the use of programmable thermostats, for around $130.00 you can change out a thermostat for a touch screen seven-day programmable thermostat that can be set to provide differing temperatures during various hours and days. An A/C technician would charge an hour to install, but if you are a “do it yourselfer” then they are straight forward to replace. For AC maintenance, it’s important to regularly change or wash (if washable) the filters each month, they are cheap to replace and range from a few dollars to twenty dollars or more for the anti-allergy types. Obviously the blue washable filters can last several months so can be a better buy but are not a complete dust block like some. Have the coils cleaned every two years minimum you can easily save up to fifty dollars a month (if you have two units) and the coils have not been cleaned for some time. Finally make sure the outside condenser units are free from vegetation, dirt or grass cuttings so they can “breath”, providing good air flow. In the event, a new/replacement unit is being bought; consider purchasing a solar A/C and/or an Energy Star approved unit for a great long term investment and solid savings. Lighting is the next easy fix. Most people are now aware of LED lighting. With the recent advancements in technology, LED pricing has come down significantly in the big box stores. A typical LED bulb can last as long as 22 years when compared to common incandescent bulbs (the common, old style bulb), which as of June 2012, have mostly been discontinued or banned from production by Life span the US Dept. of Energy. Most people began replacing these Watts of electricity with Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL’s), the curly, pig tail Kilo-Watts used per year type lights. While CFL’s reduced wattage, they still emit heat and have short life spans. LED’s Annual operating cost in comparison burn very cool, significantly reduce wattage and have a life span ranging from three to five years. A single 9.5 watt LED bulb is equivalent to approximately a 60 watt incandescent bulb. By replacing these, and also each 50 watt halogen bulb commonly found in a home’s track lighting with a three to five watt LED is a great way to save significant amounts of money. Finally, replacing the typical 65 watt outside flood lights with 13 watt LED’s are also great options. All these upgrades can reduce lighting costs by as much as Eighty Percent. With the advancement of design and availability the new LED lights now look like the old style bulbs, which was initially a complaint, even candelabra bulbs look similar. (See table.)

HOT WATER

Water heaters are another energy consuming appliance that sit harmlessly in the garage but are add a significant amount cost to an electric bill. They continuously heat water when you don’t need it. A simple solution is to make sure its thermostat is turned down to 120 degrees. A homeowner can also have a time clock installed a common type is made by Intermatic from Lowes, they cost around $50 and can be easily self-installed, but an electrician would probably charge an hours labor. These small boxes are designed to turn the heater off during the middle of the night or while away during the day. Simply set the timer to come on a few hours before you get up in the morning and /or a few hours before you get home from work. You can also manual switch then off you go away. Finally, an insulating jacket will help to keep the temperature from falling too much. If you are replacing the water heater consider an on demand, tankless system so you are heating water only when needed.

UNPLUG

As water costs continue to rise, make sure you have/buy Water Star rated and/or water saving appliances including such as low flow dishwashers and washing machines. Dual flush toilet kits are affordable and easy to install and can cut your water usage by 40 percent. The savings are not only in water usage per flush but also eliminate water leakage through old flappers in the base of the toilets. Homeowners can also consider changing to low flow shower heads and aerators in the faucets. Finally, by using more rainwater collection devices and containers for watering outside plants and regularly check for leaking sprinkler heads is another great way to save money.

The fifth tip concerns things we all do. We leave unnecessary equipment plugged into outlets. By this I mean cell phone and laptop chargers, our laptop and desktop computers when not in use, televisions in unoccupied rooms, old inefficient refrigerators in garages and the main culprit, computer printers (not often used but always plugged in).By simply unplugging these items or putting timers on them, there are much savings to be achieved. Beyond these, the more obvious things such as turning off ceiling fans and lights when not in a room, not turning on dishwashers when not full, stop using washing machines and dryer for small loads, and/or not using dryers when “line/air” drying will suffice are also great options to save. ROAD TRIP The Vagabond Hotel

She is the Vagabond Hotel. And she’s waiting for you. Vibrant. Creative. Fun. A newly renovated cosmopolitan mix of all things hasslefree, she’s an urban goddess who lives by her own rules. So from the minute you step into her vibey retro-luxe lobby to the moment you reluctantly say your goodbyes, be prepared for a

or former Wall Street bond trader and experienced urban developer, Avra Jain, purchasing the vintage Vagabond Hotel in Miami’s trendy and burgeoning MiMO (Miami Modern Architecture) District was more like the realization of a childhood dream than a real estate project. Fascinated since she was a young girl by the glamour and energy of the 1950s era, Jain has poured every bit of authenticity and attention to detail into the $5.5 million renovation of this historic 45-room, 56,000-square-foot property located at 7301 Biscayne Boulevard, just a few blocks south of 79th Street. Jain has created a realistic step back in time. The Vagabond was designed in 1953 by Robert Swartburg, the famed architect and designer of the iconic Delano Hotel on Miami Beach. In keeping with its original flavor, every detail -- from the original neon sign out front to the mosaics on the bottom of the pool -- is designed to take guests back to a time when neon lights, bright colors and good times defined the culture. Architect Dean Lewis oversaw the restoration. “The Post World War II 1950s were about the automobile, the race to the moon, Hollywood glamour and optimism,” said Jain. “Even the Vagabond features metal details that mimic the fins of a 1950’s Cadillac, the neon stars a spaceage like reference. I have heard stories of people driving up and down Biscayne just to look at the neon lights, a reflection of the playfulness of the times”. “From the moment guests arrive at the Vagabond, they will feel the happiness that hails back to a similar fun time in the 50s.” Most rooms overlook a courtyard pool, where the original

mermaid mosaic at the bottom was painstakingly restored by a professional artist, with tiles imported from France. The original naked nymphs fountain at the front of the property was also restored to its original glory. Inside each room, guests will find period furniture custom designed by Stephane Dupoux. The same fine linens used at five star resorts in the Caribbean adorn each bed, which feature high-end, bed-bug resistant, soy-filled Italian mattresses distributed by Sleep On Green. The modernized bathrooms include oversized enclosed showers and large rainwater heads. Original Dade County pine wood floors and terrazzo floors were restored. All of the infrastructure and utilities were replaced and hurricane impact glass was installed in all windows and doors. Plus all modern high-tech conveniences were added to meld seamlessly with the 50s appointments. Guests are greeted upon check-in with their room key on a whimsical rubber duck key chain, a symbol of the “duck and cover” practice schools taught children during nuclear attack drills of the day. Inside each room is a display of kitschy period goodies, from pink “I nabbed this from the Vagabond Hotel” pencils and plastic sharpeners to lollipops left on the pillow at night. Along with coffee and pastries served each morning, colorful popsicles, sunset ceremonies, and other period surprises delight visitors. An expansive cocktail bar and luxurious and comfortable oversized loungers provide the perfect reasons to stay on property all day. Plus, an exercise room is free and available for fitness enthusiasts. For the adventurous souls, South Beach, the Wynwood Art Scene and the Design District are nearby. Numerous eateries dot the neighborhood within easy walking distance, but as of November, the Vagabond’s own restaurant will be open for guest and outside visitors alike, offering a broad menu, ranging from vintage 50s offerings to Nuevo-American. The eatery is being operated by co-owner, Alvaro Perez Miranda, who ran 33 restaurants in Japan and received his culinary training in Italy. He has hired a young chef, Alex Chang, who he discovered after seeing the documentary, Paladar. Chang’s illegal dorm-room restaurant at the University of Southern California was the subject of the film. An area once home to prostitutes and drug dealers has sprung to life in the last couple of years as a quaint neighborhood of trendy restaurants and shops. Jain so believes in the potential of the area that she has purchased four other motels, including the Royal Motel, another 25-room hotel next door, which will be renovated to the same standard as the Vagabond. The neon sign will be restored to its original name, Knoxon Motel, with rooms operating as an annex to

the Vagabond. Her other purchases are the Bayside Motor Inn, Stephens International Motel, and the South Pacific Motel. “When you change the motels you change the whole neighborhood because in doing so you eliminated the kind of business that was being conducted on the properties,” she said. “The Vagabond is probably the tipping point, but a lot of work was done by the local preservationists to pave the way for people like us to want to invest here. “It is the local community support that is helping to drive all the new businesses popping up on Biscayne. We think there is demand for a boutique hotel experience on the Miami side close to the Design District near the Arts District with easy access and on-site parking. Waiting in traffic and then waiting for expensive valet service on the beach or downtown is not fun.” Backed financially through the sale to other developers of the property’s “air rights” and investments from friends and family, Jain was able to create the best at the Vagabond, and, as a result, assemble what she calls a “superstar” team. Her friends, which include uber-successful women in their own right, have chosen the Vagabond project as their “chapter two, three and four” careers, she explains. Their passions for the property and the experience it promises to deliver have motivated them to contribute their artistic and business acumen to the project.

Dalia Lagoa, a former Managing Director of Societe Generale, came out of retirement to become an owner and manager of the hotel. May Mallouh, also a former investment banker, joined in the venture to become the Chief Operating Officer. Singer Billie Myers, lends an entertainment touch, and Edwige Belmore , worldfamous 70s fashion model, is the resident gardener who maintains the tropical oasis created by landscape architect, Lewis Aqui. In addition to the interesting group of women leading the charge there is a fantastic service-oriented staff committed to making everyone’s stay memorable. Jain’s previous real estate experience has included numerous urban in-fill and adaptive reuse projects in New York City as well as Miami developments. A preservationist at her core, Jain says she has a passion for restoration and urban redevelopment. “Properties with history come with soul, just that something extra you feel and can’t quite describe. When you walk behind the green wall hedge of the Vagabond you just want to smile. Maybe the resident mermaid has something to do with that!” Jain also sees the Vagabond as the source of neighborhood pride, where many of the older residents remember the original hotel as a place where family and friends stayed or they learned how to swim. She fully expects the residents of surrounding neighborhoods and their family and friends to count among her most loyal guests. Local events, such as Art Basel, promise to create a high demand for rooms as well. Through a partnership with Florida International University (FIU) and Untitled, the Vagabond also will be periodically hosting talks focused on art and architecture. In short, the Vagabond offers a sweet weekend retreat, a step back in history and an emersion into everything Miami. For resident South Floridians, the Vagabond is the perfect choice for an unsurpassed staycation for fun, relaxation and culinary delight. Check-in, relax and enjoy the ride back to the fun 1950s.

WHAT’S SMARTER

CUSTOM SHIRTS

Every so often, you’ll have some extra disposable income. Should you use this “found money” to pay down debts or invest for the future? There’s no clear-cut answer. If you’ve got a high-rate consumer loan, you might want to get rid of it as quickly as possible. But if you don’t owe a lot, and your monthly payments aren’t really affecting your cash flow that much, you might want to consider putting any extra money into an investment. For example, you might decide to fully fund your IRA for the year before tackling minor debts. You could use the extra money to make additional mortgage payments; you might even feel more secure by lowering your mortgage. However, you may gain more liquidity and flexibility if you put your money into investments such as stocks and bonds, rather than into your mortgage. If you do come across some extra money, take advantage of it — and when choosing to pay down debts or boost your investments, think carefully.
