Superior Results for Hip and Knee Surgery Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice

My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the rst phone call, you will nd my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs. I care for people in their 80s and 90s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20s and 30s who desire an improved quality of life and want to feel “normal” again.

Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery

My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient.

CREATIVELY SPEAKING

Shake It Up BY SUSAN ROSSER

E

very so often, I come across an article worth saving for later. A few years ago, I stumbled upon a piece about a New Jersey high school that requires first-year students to hike along a 50-mile section of the Appalachian Trail at the end of the academic year. The headline caught my eye because, as a parent and just a plain old citizen, I think teaching, motivating, and inspiring youth is tantamount to a thriving society. But I suppose I am not alone — that’s pretty much the idea behind public education. A 50-mile hike is undeniably unconventional in the realm of high school education. Without delving into the details of the article, one can imagine the valuable lessons such a trek imparts. First and foremost, it must foster a sense of adventure and camaraderie. I could elaborate on the hike’s benefits, detailing what each student learned and how they bonded, but that ground has already been covered. The creative thinking of the educators who conceived this idea is what really caught my attention and got me thinking. I admire these teachers for thinking outside the box and injecting a bit of excitement into the school year. My school days are long gone, so the article led me to consider my professional world. Workplaces could benefit from a similar shake-up. Encouraging employees to step outside their comfort zones, explore new perspectives, and collaborate in unconventional ways might lead to innovative breakthroughs. The idea behind orchestrating this 50-mile hike by educators became a metaphor for me. I found inspiration in the creative thinking of these teachers, who ventured beyond traditional approaches. It prompted me to question established norms in my own life and motivated me to embrace a more open mindset.

It’s easy to stick to the same old routines, following the path of least resistance. And as a risk-averse person, that is the path I often choose. However, acknowledging that tried-and-true methods might not be the optimal way forward is half the battle. Unfortunately, when we change things up, we usually take a few swings and misses before we hit a grand slam. But the fear of failure shouldn’t stop us from looking for our pitch. As I examined at some of the challenges in my own life I am proud to say I asked myself a whole bunch of questions. What could I change? How can I be a better mother, wife, and friend? How can I enhance my productivity at work or improve my business? What should I start doing? What should I stop doing? To tell the truth, I have made several choices in the past year that I might not have made before my 50-mile-hike-epiphany. As we navigate life’s journey, both personally and professionally, let’s not shy away from the occasional detour or uncharted path. These deviations, whether minor adjustments or monumental shifts, can lead to a dynamic and fulfilling life where the end goal is not just success but a continuous evolution. CITY BEAT BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU

Topgolf Has Opened at The Pomp in Pompano Beach On Dec. 15 Topgolf held its grand opening for its ninth Florida location and 96th global location in Pompano Beach. The popular recreational sports venue will serve as one of the key attractions at The Pomp, a new development project adjacent to the newly remodeled Harrah’s (formerly Isle Casino Racing Park) at the intersection of Powerline Boulevard and Race Track Road. The Pomp is a 223-acre, mixeduse development project underway by The Cordish Companies and Caesars Entertainment that will include recreation, retail, dining, hotel, residential, office and lifestyle offerings once complete. Topgolf was one of the earliest confirmed attractions to join The Pomp development and was planned as one of the project’s cornerstone establishments. “Seeing this come to fruition means as much to me as it does the entire community,” said Pompano Beach City Manager Greg Harrison, who, in 2015, recommended the site as the ideal location for a Topgolf and pitched it to Cordish in 2020 when the company bought the land. Topgolf is a modern, multi-level, golf complex with climate-controlled hitting bays that makes golfing accessible to players of all levels and ages. Similar to an upscale bowling alley, guests at Topgolf can either reserve a golf bay in advance or walk-in to golf. A restaurant, bar

and outdoor patio are available where guests can dine, drink and wait for their bay. Groups of up to six people can join in one bay. Golfers take turns driving balls toward digital targets based on virtual courses. Topgolf utilizes what they call “Toptracer technology,” which traces each golf ball’s flight path, distance and other metrics to track the ball in the virtual game. There are also themed games, like Topgolf’s signature Angry Birds game, which sets golfers up to aim their balls – their “birds” – to virtually smash down structures, defeat pigs and cause mayhem in the Angry Birds universe. Players can choose beginner, intermediate or advanced levels to match their skill set.

YOU CAN BE BOLD, LIKE PHILANTHROPISTS TIMOTHY AND JONATHAN ALLEN

Partnering with the Community Foundation of Broward helps brothers Timothy and Jonathan Allen carry on their family’s trailblazing legacy. Their father, W. George Allen, became the first Black student to graduate with a law degree from the University of Florida and he led the legal fight that desegregated Broward public schools. By creating three scholarship funds at the Community Foundation, Timothy and Jonathan empower new generations of students to achieve success. For Timothy, “It’s about lifting people up, making a real difference and encouraging others to do the same.” Jonathan says, “With endowed scholarship funds at the Community Foundation, our family’s impact never ends.”

IT DAWNED ON ME

My New Rabbit Hole BY DAWNE RICHARDS

H

appy New Year! Maybe 2024 will be better than… UGH. I can’t believe I almost said that out loud. Whoops! Remember “This is a Story About…”? Just in case, here’s the original, widely attributed to Charles R. Swindoll (but with all the information in the world available to us, we can’t trust any of it) so if Charles R. Swindoll didn’t write it, sorry. And if he did, thanks! “This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to do, and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody

was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody would do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.” I love this story; it’s been tacked to the wall of every office I’ve worked in since forever. Anyway, my new rabbit hole. Come on, you knew I’d get here eventually! I’ve been using AI/Chat GPT for a couple of years, primarily to

make terrible art that I’d never show anyone. It’s a fun diversion. Lately, I’ve started using it to fool around with writing too. I’m morally conflicted about Chat GPT and its unauthorized use (let’s just say it: plagiarism) of published works. As a writer, it’s upsetting. That said, it is a fun diversion. Recently, I asked it to write a poem about my dearly beloved, long-gone Sheltie, Leo. The poem was not bad, but to call it “schmaltz” is generous. Here’s a sample: “In the amber glow of twilight’s grace, A tale unfolds, a cherished space. Within our home, a heart did grow, A fur-clad friend, dear Sheltie, Leo.” Barf. Anyway, I gave it the original “E, S, A and N” story to see if it would straight-up plagiarize. It did not, and it expanded on the original idea in several paragraphs. It’s certainly ambitious. Here’s a small sample:

Stay tuned for February when we delve deeper into AI, CI, DI and OI and the brave new world of ChatGPT. Y

“With assumptions and miscommunication running rampant, the task went undone. The townspeople were left disappointed, and the consequences of neglecting the task began to unfold. The town elders, realizing the mistake, called a meeting with Everybody, Anybody, Somebody, and Nobody to understand what went wrong.” [Clearly, ChatGPT understands humans, hahaha]. I then asked it to “Write a story about four things: AI, CI, DI and OI.” Here’s a sample of what it came up with for CI: “CI, or Collective Intelligence, was the fusion of numerous minds working in harmony. It represented the power of collaboration and cooperation. CI thrived on the synergy of diverse perspectives, each contributing a

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Be Useful

I

BY CRAIG HALEY

recently read Arnold Schwarzenegger’s new book, “Be Useful,” and I thought it was excellent. It was well written, easy to understand, and, more importantly, simple to implement. Now, I say “simple” because it is easy to understand what he suggests doing, however, that does not make it easy! We all know that changing long-term bad habits and implementing new, healthier habits can be challenging. As Jim Rohn says, “The simple things that lead to success are all easy to do, but they are also just as easy not to do.” Bad habits are easy to form but hard to live with. Good habits are hard to form but easy to live with. I wanted to share a few ideas and strategies that greatly impacted me.

are creating your goals. Make your goals positive, present, and personal. A better way to express the goal of losing weight is to say, “I weigh 185 pounds by March 31, 2023.” It is personal (I), positive because you are using truth in advance, and it is present tense. Your subconscious mind does not know the difference between what is actually happening and what you program into it. Use the truth in advance philosophy when you are creating your vision. Say, “I earn $250,000 annually by December 31, 2024.” That is positive, personal, and present tense. Arnold also recommends taking long walks like Beethoven, Aristotle, and Albert Einstein did when thinking about what you want for the future. Friedrich Nietzsche said “It is only ideas gained from walking that have any worth.” Take your dog for a walk and think about your ideal future and goals. What do you want to achieve? What do you want your life to look like in five years, 10 years, and 20 years? Think big! Many times, achieving a significant goal that impacts many people is not much more work than setting a smaller, more modest goal. But you make a much more significant impact on those around you!

Strategy #2: Work Your Ass Off

Strategy #1: Have a Clear Vision

Clarity is power! Many times, people don’t make progress in life and achieve their goals because they are not crystal clear about what they want. We have all heard people say, “I need to lose some weight” or “I want to make more money.” Those are vague statements that will not inspire you into action. When creating a new goal and vision for the future, take Brian Tracey’s advice. Use the 3 Ps when you

36

pointpubs.com | POMPANO!

It is great to have goals, however, if you don’t do the hard work to make them happen, it is all for nothing! When Arnold was a competitive and very successful bodybuilder (seven-time Mr. Olympia), he always worked his muscles to failure. You will never reach your potential if you don’t push yourself out of your comfort zone. Arnold always did every exercise and every set in the gym to failure. Why? Because that is what stimulates the muscle to grow. We need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable! As Jimmy Dean says, “Do what you say you’re going to do, and try to do it a little better than you said you would.” My original martial arts instructor used to say massive action leads to massive results. I couldn’t agree more!

Hot and Sour Soup with Dumplings BY MRS. KOSSENFLOFFER

A

fter the holiday parties and festive dining extravaganzas wind down, I find myself seeking easy comfort dinners. This hot and sour soup represents a fusion of two beloved takeout classics — hot and sour soup and Chinese dumplings. The result is a satisfyingly uncomplicated and substantial dinner option. Furthermore, soup season in Florida is fleeting, making it all the more imperative to relish some soup while the cooler weather lasts.

Add the sliced mushrooms and sauté until t golden brown. Add half the scallions, ginger and garlic and sauté until fragrant — about 1 minute. Pour in 2 quarts of lowsodium chicken broth into the pot. Stir well and bring the mixture to a gentle boil. Stir in 1/3 cup of lowsodium soy sauce. Add the bamboo shoots to the pot. Let the soup simmer for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Slowly drizzle in the beaten egg while continuously stirring the soup in a circular motion. Add the tofu pieces to the simmering soup. In a small bowl, mix 1/4 cup of cornstarch with 1/4 cup of water to create a slurry. Slowly pour the slurry and the white vinegar into the soup while stirring continuously. Depending on how thick you like it, you might not want to add all of the slurry. Allow the soup to simmer to reach the desired consistency. Carefully place the frozen dumplings into the soup. Cook until the dumplings are heated through and cooked according to package instructions. Serve in bowls and top with remaining scallions and sliced hot peppers. Y

Jazz Fest is hitting the beach this January! The acclaimed Pompano Beach music festival outgrew its space in Old Town and will now stage performances directly on the sand, just south of the Fisher Family Pier. This year’s lineup hits all the right notes with one iconic performance after another. Grammy® Award-winning saxophonist Branford Marsalis leads a stellar lineup of internationally renowned artists including Ms. Lisa Fischer & Grand Baton, David Sanchez, and Najee. Making this extraordinary event a true community celebration is the offering of free general admission tickets, which do require registration. And for those who don’t want to bring a beach blanket or chairs, a VIP option is also available, with additional perks. The stunning new location also provides an incredible opportunity to showcase the phe-

It’s a “Shore” Thing! nomenal redevelopment that has occurred along the oceanfront in the past years. All the leading restaurants and beverage shops that are part of the Pompano Beach Fishing Village will be featuring culinary treats and drinks in a food and spirits garden on site. In addition to all the music and food, the festival will also spotlight live art experiences by Bailey Contemporary Arts Center’s current Artists in Residence. “Creating a beachside music festival with artists of this caliber is another milestone for our City,” said Ty Tabing, Cultural Affairs Director. “We are very proud to be bringing some of the most acclaimed musicians in the world to Pompano Beach and showcase them in a fashion that truly exemplifies the escalating reputation of our City.” For Tabing, immersing Pompano Beach with arts is a mission he is passionate about. And for his team, Jazz Fest is an opportunity to

not only present incomparable headliners, but also creates a platform for emerging artists. “We are very proud to have received a $50,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Broward to expand our Artists in Residence Program outside BaCA,” he continued. “Jazz Fest will be the first time we are tapping into this funding and we are developing some outstanding ideas including live painting, art installations, mural curations, dance, and even a projection under the pier.” Food and drinks are of course essential to the success of any music festival and Tabing has tapped into all the top Fishing Village establishments including Baresco, Beach House, Burger Fi, How You Brewin’, Cannoli Kitchen Pizza, Kilwins, Lucky Fish and Oceanic. “This event will feature ‘Beachside Beats and Culinary Treats’,” quipped Tabing. “We

are thrilled that all of these outstanding locations will be having a presence in our food and spirits garden. There will definitely be a tremendous selection of choices for patrons to sample while they are enjoying the music.” “We are excited to bring this festival to South Florida, and we are grateful to our sponsors including Champion Porsche, John Knox Village, Bank United, Gold Coast Jazz Society, Outclique and Pompano! Magazine,” he continued. Exceptional musicians are naturally what draws people to any Jazz Fest and Pompano Beach has done an extraordinary job in curating the best of the best. While phenomenal global acts are taking the beach stage, the fun kicks off with South Florida favorite The Valerie Tyson Band on Thursday Night at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center.

Brandford Marsalis

After four decades in the international spotlight, the achievements of saxophonist Branford Marsalis continue to grow, and at Jazz Fest, the visionary musician will perform Saturday night, closing out the event. Crossing stylistic boundaries while maintaining an unwavering creative integrity, Marsalis has become a multi award-winning artist with three Grammys, a citation by the National Endowment for the Arts as a Jazz Master and an avatar of contemporary artistic excellence. “Having Branford perform at Jazz Fest is truly an honor,” stated Tabing. “Not only is he an incomparable musician, he is an extraordinary educator and humanitarian.” Growing up in the rich environment of New Orleans as the oldest son of pianist and educator, the late Ellis Marsalis, Branford was drawn to music along with siblings Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason. The Branford Marsalis Quartet, formed in 1986, remains his primary means of expression. In its virtually uninterrupted three-plus decades of existence, the Quartet has established a rare breadth of stylistic range as demonstrated on the band’s release: The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul. But Branford has not confined his music to the jazz quartet context. A frequent soloist with classical ensembles, Branford has become increasingly sought after as a featured soloist with acclaimed orchestras around the world, performing works by composers such as Copeland, Debussy, Glazunov, Ibert, Mahler, Milhaud, Rorem, Vaughan Williams and Villa-Lobos. And his legendary guest performances with the Grateful Dead and collaborations with Sting have made him a fan favorite in the pop arena. His work on Broadway has garnered a Drama Desk Award and Tony nominations for the acclaimed revivals of Children of a Lesser God, Fences, and A Raisin in the Sun. His screen credits include original music composed for: Spike Lee’s Mo’ Better Blues, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks starring Oprah Winfrey and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom starring Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman. Ma Rainey is the Netflix film adaptation of two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson’s play, produced by Denzel Washington and released in December 2020. Branford has also shared his knowledge as an educator, forming extended teaching relationships at Michigan State, San Francisco State and North Carolina Central Universities and conducting workshops at sites throughout the United States and the world. After the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, Branford, along with friend Harry Connick, Jr., conceived of “Musicians’ Village,” a residential community in the Upper Ninth Ward of New Orleans. The centerpiece of the Village is the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, honoring Branford’s father. The Center uses music as the focal point of a holistic strategy to build a healthy community and to deliver a broad range of services to underserved children, youth and musicians from neighborhoods battling poverty and social injustice. Najee

David Sánchez

The Latin Grammy Award winner has been hailed as “the most profound young tenor saxophonist working today. He will be performing on Friday night at Jazz Fest, treating listeners to a compelling mix of mainstream jazz with a rich array of Latin and Afro-Caribbean influences. “Sánchez has garnered tremendous acclaim from critics and audiences alike,” said Tabing. “His ability to expand the borders of mainstream jazz is truly exciting.” Born in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, David began playing percussion and drums at age 8 before migrating to tenor saxophone four years later. While a student at the prestigious La Escuela Libre de Música in San Juan, he also took up soprano and alto saxophones as well as flute and clarinet. The bomba and plena rhythms of Puerto Rico, along with Cuban and Brazilian traditions, were among the biggest influences on his early taste in music, with Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon and John Coltrane having the greatest impact on his playing. In 1986 David enrolled at the Universidad de Puerto Rico in Rio Pedras, but the pull of New York was irresistible. By 1988 he had auditioned for and won a music scholarship at Rutgers University in New Jersey. With such close proximity to New York City, David quickly became a member of its swirling jazz scene. He gigged with piano giant Eddie Palmieri and trumpeter Claudio Roditi who, along with master saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera, who brought David to the attention of Jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie. In 1991, Gillespie invited the young saxophonist to join his “Live the Future” tour with Miriam Makeba. From the beginning, David’s recordings have garnered national recognition. Produced by Branford Marsalis, Obsesión would provide the saxophonist with his first Grammy nomination, with many more nominations and major awards to follow for his next releases. Whether touring with his legendary jazz mentors, or under his own name, David continues to bring his unique sound to delighted audiences throughout the globe from France, Spain and Italy, to Japan, South Korea and now Pompano Beach!

Chart-topping contemporary Jazz pioneer Najee, is a Grammy and NAACP award-winning musician who will be gracing the Champion Porsche Stage on Friday night. “Najee is a genre-bending saxophonist who has collaborated with an array of luminaries including Prince, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and many more,” stated Tabing. When Najee was just a kid in New York, he had the great fortune of meeting two iconic jazzmen: Sonny Rollins and Charles Mingus. The introductions, which left lasting impressions, further led him down his musical path. As he developed on the sax, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Yusef Lateef, and Hubert Laws became influences. Constantly honing his skills, Najee had the blessing of being mentored by iconic saxmen Jimmy Heath and Frank Foster and flutist Harold Jones. As an industrious and hungry young musician, Najee had the good fortune of coming through Dr. Billy Taylor’s now legendary Jazzmobile program. While a student at the New England Conservatory, (where both he and his brother attended) he studied Jazz with luminaries George Russell and Jaki Byard. In the late 80s when Najee finished school and returned to New York, he landed a gig with Chaka Khan along with his brother, guitarist Fareed (who is his long-time manager). An illustrious career ensued with album after album fusing R&B and jazz into a unique and captivating sound has resulted in six #1 albums on the Billboard charts!

After four decades of featured background singing with icons like Luther Vandross, The Rolling Stones, Chaka Khan, Tina Turner, and Nine Inch Nails. Lisa Fisher is now taking centerstage and enchanting audiences with her organic fusion of Caribbean psychedelic soul and jazzy progressive rock. “Lisa is a powerhouse singer who deserves the spotlight,” said Tabing. “In the Oscar-winning Best Documentary, Twenty Feet from Stardom, her inspiring story as one of the world’s most sought-after backup singers, ignited her solo career and awakened her life-long desire to make music that heals but still rocks the house.” Singing with Mick Jagger on “Gimme Shelter,” highlighted Lisa’s incredible stage presence. She joined the Rolling Stones’ 1989 Steel Wheels tour and continued to grace their stage for the next 26 years. Luther Vandross was another long-time collaborator, as Lisa sang with the velvety-voiced performer for over 20 years. Raised in the Fort Green neighborhood of Brooklyn, she emerged from New York’s fervent studio scene and in addition to touring with legendary acts, she also released her own album, So Intense which earned her a Grammy Award for Best R&B performance for the hit song “How Can I Ease the Pain.” Lisa’s passion for constant growth and experimentation with different styles led to an array of collaborations with a wide array of artists including jazz pianist Taylor Eigsti, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, YoYo Ma, the BCC Proms, numerous symphonies and more. At Jazz Fest Pompano Beach on Saturday evening, Lisa Fischer will perform with Grand Baton, a dynamic collaboration that has impressed audiences at major events including The Monterey Jazz Festival, The Newport Jazz Festival, and The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
