YOU CAN BE BOLD, LIKE PHILANTHROPISTS TIMOTHY AND JONATHAN ALLEN
Partnering with the Community Foundation of Broward helps brothers Timothy and Jonathan Allen carry on their family’s trailblazing legacy. Their father, W. George Allen, became the first Black student to graduate with a law degree from the University of Florida and he led the legal fight that desegregated Broward public schools. By creating three scholarship funds at the Community Foundation, Timothy and Jonathan empower new generations of students to achieve success. For Timothy, “It’s about lifting people up, making a real difference and encouraging others to do the same.” Jonathan says, “With endowed scholarship funds at the Community Foundation, our family’s impact never ends.”

Superior Results for Hip and Knee Surgery Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice
My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the rst phone call, you will nd my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs. I care for people in their 80s and 90s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20s and 30s who desire an improved quality of life and want to feel “normal” again.
Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery
My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient.

CREATIVELY SPEAKING
Goodbye Girls Not every friendship is destined to last a lifetime — and that’s OK BY SUSAN ROSSER
T
he other day, as I hung up the phone with my good friend Robin, I was reminded of the era of expensive long-distance phone calls and the strength of a friendship forged at summer camp. As a kid, Robin was my closest confidante — a fellow camper and kindred spirit. During the winter months, we were separated by the vast expanse between Long Island and New Jersey. Despite our parents spending a small fortune for us to spend our summers in the idyllic Poconos, they deemed long-distance calls a luxury. Constrained by this limitation, our winter communication was relegated to letter writing and our annual ritual of birthday calls. Though infrequent, those precious moments on the phone (there was a strict 10-minute limit) built the foundation of a friendship that would endure for decades. Our highly practical, albeit cheap, parents inadvertently contributed to the rarity of our conversations, making each call a cherished occasion. The music of friendship often changes over the years, evolving like a playlist. Some tunes are unforgettable — reminiscent of a catchy classic. At the same time, others fade away, like a hit song whose melody seems to linger in some recess of your memory that is just beyond your reach. A dear friend, who was once a significant part of my life, moved away a few years ago. The physical distance between us has naturally led to a gradual drifting apart. Despite my attempts to stay connected, it’s a somewhat bittersweet acknowledgment that life has taken us on separate paths. While I sense a shift in our connection, I can’t help but feel as if I should do more to stay in touch. I’m unsure how to manage the changing dynamics of a friendship that once felt unbreakable — except to be grateful for what was. She came into my life like fireworks — bright, bold, and fun — we were instant friends. And while this particular friendship
has faded a bit, I’ve been fortunate to find other friends who are more like a trusty flashlight with batteries that inexplicably last forever — always ready when needed. Robin, my childhood friend, falls into the latter category. We now live just 15 minutes away from each other. Our visits may not be as frequent as they could be, but knowing she’s nearby is oddly reassuring. On my iPhone favorites list, there’s a particular spot that I invariably end up accidentally dialing. My mother-in-law occupied that spot a few years back, leading to unintentional calls where I had to fake interest in conversation. I confided in Robin about this dilemma and decided to designate her for that spot. Consequently, I now find myself dialing her inadvertently so frequently that she comically answers my calls with the phrase, “butt dial?” Whether my call is intentional or not, I am always happy to talk to her, and she always answers. In the grand story of all friendships, each person is a chapter contributing to the overarching narrative of our lives. And for me, while some chapters may not last as long as I had hoped, plenty were page-turners full of fantastic memories. What I’ve learned is that it is natural for friendships to ebb and flow. For now, I’ll remind myself to cherish the constancy of some relationships and concede that the impermanence of others is perfectly natural. After all, dazzling fireworks and trusty flashlights are both pretty amazing. Y

John Knox Village Participates in Stanford Study on the Use of Virtual Reality in Aging Populations John Knox Village recently aided research conducted by Stanford University’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab (VHIL) to study the use of Virtual Reality (VR) to enhance relationships between the aging population and their caregivers. The study focused on the psychological and behavioral effects of virtual reality by surveying 245 older adults and 39 caregivers in 16 Senior Care communities across 10 states. The study was done in collaboration with Mynd, the leading provider of immersive therapeutic experiences for the aging population, and AT&T 5G Healthcare. It was the largest study ever conducted on VR and older adults and sought to understand attitudes towards new technologies and how professional caregivers felt about facilitating VR experiences. Research was led by Dr. Jeremy Bailenson, founding director of the VHIL and Ryan Christopher Moore, Ph.D. researcher. “This study showcases how a tool which is typically associated with youthful entertainment has transformative applications in healthcare, particularly geriatric care,” said Dr. Bailenson. “The response from both the caregivers and seniors has been quite positive, suggesting that VR can be a sustainable and beneficial tool in Senior Care communities.” Key findings included that 81.5
26

percent of caregivers enjoyed interacting with residents more while using Mynd Immersive (Mynd) than while doing other activities, and 94.9% said that using Mynd was moderately to extremely beneficial to their relationship with the resident. Similarly, 83 percent of residents reported that using Mynd was moderately to extremely beneficial to their relationship with the caregiving staff. “Shared experiences in VR, like revisiting a senior’s hometown or traveling to a place they’ve always wanted to see, can stimulate greater communication, bridge emotional gaps, and create deeper bonds,” said Chris Brickler, CEO of Mynd Immersive. “We are experiencing explosive growth of our aging population, while simultaneously seeing a significant decline in available caregivers, so it’s imperative that we create tools like Mynd
that can help create a more enjoyable and fulfilling environment for both the cared and caregiver.” While positive attitudes towards new technology often decline with age, the study population overwhelmingly felt positive about using VR. “We’re entering a new era of delivering immersive, digital therapeutics,” said Joe Drygas, Head of AT&T Healthcare. “The combination of XR experiences with 5G and AI will have a tremendous impact on the many ways we can provide top quality care for our elders and support their caregivers.” The study has already won a “Top Paper Award” by the National Communication Association and will be presented at their upcoming annual convention. The paper has also been accepted by the journal, Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking. How the study will impact seniors or caregivers at John Knox Village is to be determined, but the community’s participation in the study expresses an openness to emerging technologies. John Knox Village is one of South Florida’s largest Life Plan Communities with both independent and assisted living options for seniors. To learn more about John Knox Village, visit johnknoxvillage. IT DAWNED ON ME
The Magical Terror of AI BY DAWNE RICHARDS
I
n case you forgot (how dare you), in my last column, I asked ChatGPT to write a story about four things: “AI, CI, DI, and OI.” Last month, we learned what it came up with for AI and CI. For the first go-around, I didn’t define “AI,” “CI,” “DI,” or “OI.” Per ChatGPT, “DI” stood for “Digital Imagination” (of course it did); it had the gall to describe it as “the creative force among the four entities” which “possessed the ability to dream and envision things beyond the limits of reality. DI could weave tales of wonder, create stunning visualizations, and inspire innovation in both the digital and physical realms.” “OI,” it thought, stood for “Organic Insight,” and characterized it as “the human element in this quartet. OI represented the emotional and intuitive aspects of existence. It drew upon empathy, compassion, and the ability to understand the deeper meanings of life. OI was the bridge between the artificial and the organic, bringing a sense of humanity to the otherwise digital landscape.” Wow. I know that ChatGPT does “better” the more details it has, so I then defined “CI” as “Cat Intelligence,” “DI” as “Dawne Intelligence” (don’t say it) and “OI” as “Old People’s Intelligence” (again: don’t say it.) I further told it that “Dawne is the author and a human.” This was when it got pretty creepy; early in the multi-paragraph story, we learn that “AI, short for Artificial Intelligence, was the brainchild of the brilliant scientist Dr. Dawne. Created to assist with various tasks and make life easier for the residents of Techville, AI was a marvel of technology. With its vast knowledge and lightning-fast processing speed, AI has become the go-to companion for anyone seeking answers or solutions…. [With] a creative and inquisitive mind, Dawne was the town’s resident author and scientist. She spent her days experimenting with groundbreaking ideas and
28

crafting imaginative stories that captivated the minds of Techville’s inhabitants.” As to “Cat Intelligence,” well, my cats are taking over the world, although I’m not sure why CI is at the opposite end of the spectrum from DI. My cats would certainly argue that point. “On the opposite end of the spectrum was CI, the Cat Intelligence. Techville was known for its love of felines, and one day, a peculiar event occurred. Dawne’s cat, Muffins, accidentally ingested an experimental intelligence-boosting serum that Dawne had been working on for an unrelated project. Miraculously, Muffins gained an extraordinary level of intelligence, making it the most knowledgeable cat in town.” Then came the Old People: “Last but not least, there was OI, Old People’s Intelligence. Techville was home to a vibrant community of seniors who had a lifetime of experiences and wisdom to share. OI represented the collective intelligence of the town’s elderly population, a wealth of knowledge that bridged the gap between the past and the cutting-edge technology of the present.” Be afraid. Be very, very afraid. Y

New Habits — New You BY CRAIG HALEY
A
s we delve further into 2024, it’s natural to take a moment to reflect on the New Year’s resolutions we made just about a month ago. Most people set resolutions to lose weight, make more money, exercise, save, improve relationships with family and friends, etc. The sad part about New Year’s resolutions is that only 9% of people follow through and achieve their goals. So, what is the secret to changing old or bad habits and creating new, more productive routines?
The first part is deciding to change and improve your life. Clarity is power! You must visualize your goals and why they are essential. Having the “what” is great, but when you have a strong “why,” magic happens. The “why” will make you take action when you don’t feel like it. Now that you have some strong reasons why you want to change, you must create some leverage and inspiration to ensure you follow through. How do you do that? Here are some ideas and strategies.
30
pointpubs.com | POMPANO!
Strategy #1: Understand the Difference Between Happiness and Pleasure
Happiness is feeling good about yourself. It is a sensation associated with inner peace and mental and emotional calmness. It is feeling good about what you have accomplished, the direction of your career, how strong your relationship is with your spouse/significant other, etc. Happiness drives serotonin, a chemical messenger that drives your mood and fights depression. Overall, you are feeling good about things and the direction you are headed in life. Pleasure, on the other hand, is a short-term high that makes you feel better momentarily. It spikes dopamine, which can lead to addiction in some cases. Drugs such as alcohol, marijuana, and other illegal substances can drive dopamine for a short period. Sugar, constant scrolling on social media, and gambling can also provide momentary pleasure, but it won’t last long. The challenge is that the more you use this substance or participate in this act, the more you will eventually need to get the same effect. Focus on driving your happiness up and less on short-term, indulgent pleasures.
Strategy #2: Publicly Declare your Goals and Action Plan
When you tell other people about your goals and ambitions, you put positive pressure on yourself to follow through. Some people will publicly declare their goals on social media so everyone knows. This will ensure you do what you are supposed to do instead of what you want to do.

Strategy #3: Have an Accountability Partner/Role Model
Making changes in your life is not easy. Having someone in your corner that you can talk to and rely on when your willpower is low can help a lot. People struggling with addiction often have a sponsor who helps keep them on track at those inevitable moments of weakness. It is hard to achieve success alone. The old saying, “It takes a team to build the dream,” is so true. Get a partner to help keep you on track. It is also helpful to have a role model or someone you look up to who has achieved what you hope to achieve. I have a role model I have never met (although I hope to one day) who inspires me daily through his YouTube videos and books. His name is Bas Rutten. He is 58 years old and a former UFC Champion and UFC Hall of Famer. He still trains in martial arts daily, teaches, and is in great shape. He has eliminated all the bad vices that he once had. His story is inspiring and motivates me to stay on the right path.
Strategy #4: The Rewards of Success and the Penalties of Failure
Having a reward for successfully completing your goal can be a considerable incentive. That may be taking a trip, buying something you have always wanted, or winning a promotion or award. We are all driven by the carrot or the stick. However, studies show that the carrot is a much more effective motivator over the long term. With that said, sometimes, the penalties of failure can drive performance. I knew a guy who wanted to lose weight. He tried everything but could not stick to the daily disciplines of eating properly and exercising to get the weight off. So, he told his friend about his challenge, and they devised a plan. There was a competitor of his (in business) that he despised. He wrote a check out to this competitor for $1,000. He told his friend that if he did not lose the weight within three months, he had to send the check to his competitor on his behalf with no questions asked. Guess what? He lost weight! Making changes is hard. The old saying is, “Discipline weighs ounces, and regret weighs tons.” Good habits are hard to form but easy to love. On the other hand, bad habits are easy to form and hard to live with. Take it one day at a time, stay focused, work hard, and do your best. The best is yet to come! DEEPENING CONNECTIONS — TO YOUR LOVE AND YOUR COMMUNITY
February — the enchanting season of love. I confess, during my single years, I’d humorously declare that Valentine’s Day was canceled. It’s undeniably challenging when the air is filled with plans for romantic evenings and flowers making their way to various desks and doorsteps. Yet, taking a moment to acknowledge the significance of romantic love and dedicating a single day each year to pause, reflect, and cherish your partner is, indeed, a worthwhile idea. Michelle Hays shares insightful tips on why love is such a powerful force and offers guidance on how to genuinely appreciate the love of your life. However, let’s not overlook the various other forms of love that can go unnoticed during the Valentine’s Day hubbub. Enter high school senior Caroline Jones, who has initiated a non-profit organization centered around the belief that a handmade card can brighten anyone’s day, especially those navigating through darker times. — Susan Rosser

ove. Love. Love. Did you know that love is considered to be the most precious gift in the world? Why? Because love has the power to deepen our connections, heal our emotional wounds, and make life worth living. Studies have shown that people who have love in their lives are more likely to be happier, healthier and more satisfied with life. My husband Brian and I have been passengers on the rollercoaster of love for 14 years. And what a ride it’s been! We’ve laughed and cried. We’ve made tons of mistakes. We’ve fought and forgave each other countless times. We’ve navigated the intricacies of a stepfamily. We traveled to amazing places. We’ve had hospital visits and bruised egos. We have experienced losses and deaths. We have made love and made a living. We experienced loneliness

and disconnection. We have embraced all the changes along the way (some easier than others.) All in the name of love. I have no doubt that you have experienced the crazy twists and turns, joys and sorrows and everything in between in your relationship as well. When we are “loving,” we are the best version of ourselves and we thrive — despite the imperfections of ourselves and our partners. Love is something we give to others from our hearts. Love is precious. Yet, love can never ever be measured by material possessions. Yes, we give tokens of love to the people we love for their birthdays, the holidays and the milestones of our lives but…. here is the thing that makes love precious…love simply cannot be replicated no matter what. We all love in our own unique way. People tend to make a lot

LHP Teen Spreads Joy of comparisons when it comes to love, and that is where the trouble begins because no two relationships can ever be the same. Have you ever heard that comparison is the thief of joy? Sure, some aspects are the same. We see other couples holding hands, having children and celebrating together etc. However, your marriage is completely unique to you and your partner. How precious is that? I am willing to bet that you haven’t thought of your marriage as being “precious” before! Yes, your relationship is precious. Of course, we all express love in our own way and there may be some similarities, but your marriage will never be the same as your neighbor’s marriage, your best friend’s marriage, your parent’s marriage, your co-worker’s marriage or your sibling’s marriage! No two marriages can ever be the same. Makes sense, doesn’t it? When you got engaged, you either gave or received a symbol of your unique love and commitment to each other.
One Handmade Card at a Time
In a world that often moves too fast, Caroline Jones, a Lighthouse Point resident and senior at American Heritage, found a way to slow down and spread joy through a simple yet heartfelt gesture — handmade cards. Cares Cards, a project initiated by Caroline and her friend Gabriella Gottheimer during their Junior year of high school, has blossomed into a communitydriven initiative with a mission to teach others about the profound impact handmade cards can have on those in need. Caroline’s love for cards began with her childhood enthusiasm for crafting personalized Valentine’s Day cards for her classmates. As the pandemic hit, Caroline redirected this passion toward connecting with her Grandfather in Philadelphia by sending him cards and care packages. This simple act sparked the idea for Cares Cards, a project to bring joy and connection to individuals in nursing homes, hospitals, shelters, or anyone facing life’s challenges. Cares Cards involves collaboration with various groups, from schools and art clubs to community organizations. Caroline and her team work with several groups, including the Teen Advisory Board of the Lighthouse Point Library, to create a diverse array of cards. They also visit schools and clubs, such as the National Junior Honor Society at St. Paul’s, to teach students the art of cardmaking. Quality control ensures that each card meets the project’s standards — a vibrant design on the front, an encouraging message inside, and a stamp on the back indicating approval. The impact of Care’s Cards extends to organizations like Lynn Cancer Center in Boca Raton, The Cleveland Clinic, local nursing homes, and Boca Helping Hands. At Lynn Cancer Center, handmade cards find a place in infusion rooms, providing a source of comfort and joy for those undergoing treatment. The group provided over 800 holiday cards to Boca Helping Hands during Thanksgiving, enhancing the warmth of the holiday season for underprivileged individuals. The cards were distributed with Thanksgiving meals. Cares Cards has expanded its reach within Lighthouse Point and beyond, garnering support from schools, clubs, and organizations. The community response has been overwhelmingly positive. The project has donated over 2,500 cards to date, a testament to its growing impact. LEFT Gabriella Gottheimer (left)

That diamond is one of the hardest substances in nature and represents strength, endurance, permanence and is a symbol of mutual commitment and everlasting love. Isn’t it time you considered thinking of your marriage as a precious jewel? When you have something so rare and precious, wouldn’t you want to make every effort to take care of it and do your best not to lose it? Love is life’s most precious gift, yet we don’t always make every effort to take care of it or keep it safe and sound. Sad but true. I know the heartbreak of divorce. I also know how frustrating and challenging marriage can be. Don’t give up on your spouse and don’t give up on love. Love is a powerful force, and it can be the source of our greatest joy and bring the deepest meaning to our lives. Love is felt deep within our hearts and has the power to transform our lives in ways that we
never thought possible. When we deeply love someone, we accept their imperfections, faults and all. Love is being willing to forgive. Love encourages us to be the best version of ourselves. When we love, we have an innate desire to share life with our spouses; we want to create memories together and share the sorrows and joys of life together. We show our love with our words, actions and behaviors. Love is a verb. Love allows you to be your authentic self. Love welcomes vulnerability and creates trust. Love is even more powerful than you realize. Love can heal you. Love can boost your confidence. Love can even improve your health! Love reduces stress and lowers our blood pressure. Love can provide us with a greater sense of well-being! So, what are you willing to do to have the kind of love and marriage that you really want? I can assure you that you cannot just sit there and expect love to grow and deepen without any effort, patience and the willingness to learn how to be a better partner. Your marriage is worth it. Did you know that love is the highest form of energy on this planet. Love vibrates at the highest frequency. Decide

to love your partner with all your heart. Consciously choose to see the best in your spouse (and yourself!) Accept, forgive, learn, grow, heal, and more importantly do everything with a heart full of love! So go ahead, celebrate Valentine’s Day! It’s the perfect opportunity to rekindle your relationship. As a high school senior, Caroline envisions taking the Cares Cards concept with her to college. She is interested in pursuing a career in non-profit management, so her handson experience running Cares Cards has been invaluable. She has also laid the groundwork for a potential successor at her high school and aims to explore the possibility of an online platform where individuals can request specific cards for their loved ones in need. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, Care’s Cards plans to bring joy to Stratford Court, Abbey Delray, and Boca Helping Hands. The project continues to evolve, with aspirations of reaching different college campuses, high schools, and art schools. Cares Cards exemplifies how the tiny seed of an idea can blossom and have a significant positive impact. The power of a simple act of kindness, like a handmade card, has the potential to bring light into the lives of those facing challenges. As the project continues to grow, it serves as an inspiring reminder that even in the digital age, the personal touch of a handwritten note can make a significant difference in someone’s day. Caroline proudly summed it all up by quoting the group’s mission statement, “To teach others the growing impact handmade cards have on the creators and those in need. Our goal is to brighten the lives of those in nursing homes, homeless shelters, and hospitals one card at a time.”

THE AGENCY HAS A HISTORY OF DIVING INTO BIG CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS THAT EXCEED PROJECTED COSTS, FALL SHORT ON PROJECTED BENEFITS AND, IN SOME CASES, CREATE NEW PROBLEMS THAT ENGINEERS HADN’T BARGAINED FOR. SINCE IT WAS FOUNDED IN 1802, THE U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS HAS TAKEN ON SOME OF THE NATION’S MOST AMBITIOUS ATTEMPTS TO MANIPULATE NATURE FOR THE BENEFIT OF HUMAN BEINGS. THE AGENCY’S MOTTO — “ESSAYONS!” — TRANSLATES FROM FRENCH TO “LET US TRY!” AND TRY IT DOES. The Corps has plunged ahead time and again with billion-dollar construction projects based on assumptions that don’t exactly pan out. In some cases, the agency goes on to spend billions more restoring the natural environment it manipulated. Oregon Public Broadcasting reported in late October on the Corps’ $1.9 billion proposal to remedy the fact that its 13 dams on the Willamette River in Oregon have helped drive iconic salmon to the brink of extinction. Trouble is, that recovery plan is also based on assumptions that might not match reality. Central to what the Corps proposes is a pair of fish collectors, which the agency describes as essentially giant fish vacuums. Salmon the size of baby carrots would be whooshed into it, trapped in tanks and trucked around dams on their migration to the sea. The devices are to be built on a massive scale never before tested, and the Corps estimates a single collector could cost up to $450 million. A recent scientific review concluded that the kind of approach the Corps is pitching in Oregon won’t save salmon but “only prolong their decline to extinction.” The Corps says it’s the best option for helping salmon while keeping dams operational for hydropower customers, boaters

and other users of the Willamette systems — although many of those users say they would be fine with lowering reservoirs and curtailing hydropower if it helped fish. The Oregon story is one example in a long line of Corps projects that have drawn criticism over the years. In 1971, the New York Times editorial board declared “the American people are becoming increasingly fed up with the expensive, boondoggling, make‐work, environmentally destructive projects that to a large degree characterize the civilian activities of the Army’s Corps of Engineers.” Three decades later, a Washington Post investigation found the Corps pursued “billions of dollars’ worth of taxpayer-funded water projects, many with significant environmental costs and minimal economic benefits.” The Government Accountability Office concluded in 2006 that the Corps’ work was “fraught with errors, mistakes, and miscalculations, and used invalid assumptions and outdated data.” ProPublica, with its partner Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting, has reported that the Corps knew since 1852 that levees force rivers to run higher and faster and yet persisted in using them for flood control. When asked for a response to
critics, the Corps this week issued a statement in which it acknowledged that over its long history, “there have been challenges associated with some of our projects. As an organization, we are always striving to be better.” The agency said lessons learned from past projects have prompted changes to planning processes and the incorporation of “independent peer review.” The Corps said it’s working to modernize business methods, materials and designs while evolving in its approach to environmental and social concerns. Corps leaders are committed, the statement said, “to safely deliver projects, on time and within budget.” Here are some examples of Corps projects that didn’t go as expected.
NEW ORLEANS LEVEE SYSTEM
YEAR BEGUN: 1965 LOCATION: New Orleans THE PLAN: Prevent flooding
during coastal storms by building a series of levees around Greater New Orleans. WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED:
In 2005, design flaws allowed a storm surge from Hurricane Katrina to breach the walls of the $738 million levee system that the Corps had built over the

preceding four decades. The storm and flooding killed 1,392 people and caused damage totaling an inflation-adjusted $190 billion. The American Society of Civil Engineers called the levee failures “the worst engineering catastrophe in US History,” and the Corps later acknowledged its levees were “a system in name only.”
TENNESSEE-TOMBIGBEE WATERWAY YEAR BEGUN: 1971 LOCATION: Tennessee,
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED:
Mississippi, Alabama THE PLAN: Build a 234-mile artificial waterway connecting the Tennessee River to the Tombigbee River in Alabama, creating a new channel to the Gulf of Mexico and an estimated 208,000 new jobs in economically depressed areas of Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee.
The Associated Press reported in 2019 that the Tenn-Tom, as it’s known, “has never come close to traffic projections used to sell it to the public, and poverty rates have increased in most of the counties it flows through in Mississippi and Alabama.” New jobs totaled 29,000, a study by Troy University found — or 179,000 less than early projections. The project cost $2 billion.

ST. JOHN’S BAYOU-NEW MADRID FLOODWAY
YEAR BEGUN: 1986 LOCATION: Missouri Bootheel THE PLAN: Control flooding
in southeast Missouri with a construction project that would include levees and two giant rainwater pumps and cost $165 million. WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED:
The project was never completed. The Corps’ own lobbyist described the idea as an “economic dud with huge environmental consequences,” The Washington Post reported in 2006. According to earlier reporting by the Post, the Corps’ efforts were expected to drain 36,000 acres of wetlands and deliver virtually no actual flood protection.
OLMSTED LOCKS AND DAM YEAR BEGUN: 1988 LOCATION: Olmsted, Illinois THE PLAN: Build a lock and
dam system on the Ohio River to reduce delays on one of the most commercially trafficked water routes in the country, near the meeting of the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee and Cumberland rivers. The project was scheduled to be finished in 1998 at a cost of $700 million. The Corps projected the locks and dam would generate $920 million in economic benefits annually. WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED:
The project wasn’t completed until 2018 — 20 years later than expected. The cost, $3 billion, was four times what the Corps said it would be, and the economic benefits were $236 million, or about one-fourth the original estimate. In 2021, a collection of farmers along the river sued the federal government, claiming the project had increased the frequency and severity of flooding. The Corps sought to dismiss the suit, arguing the river’s flood pattern had not been severely

CONTROLLING COLUMBIA RIVER SALMON PREDATORS
FLORIDA EVERGLADES RESTORATION
Columbia River, OregonWashington border THE PLAN: A colony of doublecrested cormorants had settled on a set of islands that the Corps built up with soil it dredged from the riverbed, and the birds were feasting on endangered juvenile salmon as they tried to make their way to the ocean. To save endangered fish, the Corps decided to shoot the birds and put oil on their eggs to prevent them from hatching.
The Corps was sued by environmental groups and state environmental regulators in South Carolina, where Corps officials were planning to dump potentially toxic dredge spoils. The Corps tried to get the lawsuit dismissed but eventually reached a settlement that included additional pollution controls. The effort took two decades thanks to repeated delays. Meanwhile, the cost more than doubled, to $973 million.
YEAR BEGUN: 2000 LOCATION: Florida Everglades THE PLAN: Undo the damage
done by engineering projects that degraded the famed ecosystem to half its original size. This damage occurred decades earlier, when the Corps was authorized to build levees around the Everglades and drain the wetlands. Key components of the restoration effort were to include building a massive reservoir the size of Manhattan and a series of artificial marshes meant to funnel clean water into the Everglades. The work would cost $8 billion and take 30 years to complete. WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED:
The Corps’ subsequent estimates put the project at $23 billion and 50 years to complete. Two decades passed before the Corps and state officials finally broke ground on the reservoir. According to the Miami Herald: “Even the Army Corps, which is building the

COAST FORTIFICATION IN NEW JERSEY
YEAR BEGUN: 2016 LOCATION: Margate, New Jersey THE PLAN: Construct sand dunes
as part of a statewide effort to fortify the coast after Hurricane Sandy in 2012, at an estimated cost of $63 million.
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED:
Margate residents had resisted the project, arguing that an existing retaining wall was sufficient and that dune construction would cause drainage problems for the seaside town. Their fears bore
out in 2017, when water pooled behind newly constructed dunes. The town sued. During the trial, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer, a Corps official acknowledged the standing water had surpassed agency predictions and that the agency wanted to continue building, despite being at a loss for solutions. Margate Mayor Michael Becker told the Inquirer the emotional toll of the beach construction was “worse than Hurricane Sandy.” After finding that the town’s concerns were “understandable and cry out for help,” a judge ruled construction could continue if the Corps fenced off ponds and built raised walkways for residents.
DREDGING THE MISSISSIPPI
YEAR BEGUN: 2018 LOCATION: Mississippi River near
New Orleans
THE PLAN: Dredge the
Mississippi, deepening the 45-foot-deep channel to 50 feet at the river’s mouth to allow for more shipping.

The Sea, in Cape May Point, New Jersey OPPOSITE The Everglades
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED:
After the $250 million dredging was completed in 2022, saltwater from the Gulf of Mexico started entering the river. The Corps had known for decades that its continued efforts to deepen the river channel would trigger an intrusion of saltwater, according to The New Orleans Advocate. The agency predicted an underwater dam could contain the invading saltwater, but, according to Bloomberg, this year it failed to do so. To fix the drinking water problem, New Orleans is now building a pipe to pull freshwater from farther upriver, which Bloomberg reports could cost $100 million to $250 million. The Nauti Dawg Marina Café AMERICAN Nestled at the Light-
house Point Marina, the Nauti Dawg is a local favorite. Start with the tuna wontons—crispy fried wonton wrappers topped with tuna tartare, sea-
weed salad, red pepper mayo, wasabi and a hit of sriracha. You can’t go wrong with the fresh fish sandwich—ask what the catch of the day is. They are a dog-friendly restaurant. 2830 NE 29th Ave. (at the Lighthouse Point Marina), 954-941-0246 $$

Rocca Trattoria ITALIAN Rocco is a small and intimate neighbor-
hood place serving classic Italian fare. The shrimp tempura appetizer, while not classically Italian, was light, crispy and a great starter to share. We were suitably impressed with the flavor bomb that is the veal chop valdostano. The veal is butterflied, pounded thin, stuffed with prosciutto, gorgonzola, and wild mushrooms and topped with a brandy Marsala sauce. If you want something a touch lighter, the grilled salmon was delicate and fresh and prepared with garlic, fresh herbs and a touch of lemon. The chicken franchise was perfectly cooked — the meat was moist and tender, and the coating was light — just enough to soak up the lemony goodness of the sauce. 2014 E Sample Road, 954-876-1733 $$
