Superior Results for Hip and Knee Surgery Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice

My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the rst phone call, you will nd my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs. I care for people in their 80s and 90s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20s and 30s who desire an improved quality of life and want to feel “normal” again.

Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery

My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient.

CREATIVELY SPEAKING

Spreading Sunshine with Corned Beef and Compliments BY SUSAN ROSSER

F

ifteen minutes before bidding farewell to this world, my father made an unusual request — a corned beef sandwich on rye, accompanied by a Doctor Brown’s cream soda and precisely four pickles from “the deli on 441 north of Yamato Road.” At the age of 95, he was in no pain, but the doctors informed us that his time was winding down. During his last few years, my Dad depended on Uber Eats to deliver his favorite foods, with my sister and I

acting as his culinary conduits. The internet was a mystery to him. And although he was weak at the very end, he was determined to savor one last corned beef sandwich. Unfortunately, he passed away only 15 minutes after making this request. He never got that last sandwich. A year later, following his unveiling, a Jewish ceremony that marks the conclusion of the mourning period, my sister and I chose to commemorate his memory with lunch at Ben’s Kosher Deli, the very place he adored. Corned beef became our tribute. After relishing our sandwiches, pickles, and cream soda, we decided to share our appreciation with the manager, narrating the poignant story of my father’s final gastronomic desire. The manager, genuinely

16

pointpubs.com | POMPANO!

moved, expressed his gratitude. Though tears didn’t quite fill his eyes, he came remarkably close. This encounter spurred a profound realization in me. When things don’t go our way, we often find the time and the means to voice our complaints. Bad service? Speak to the manager. However, we tend to skip expressing our gratitude when things go smoothly. Whether it’s the early arrival of a long-awaited package or the repairman, who not only confirms your appointment but arrives promptly, wearing a smile and efficiently completing the job. Or the doctor who miraculously sees you at your designated appointment time — not 30 minutes later. When faced with subpar restaurant service, my father didn’t hesitate to make his dissatisfaction known. Yet, he was equally swift to shower compliments where they were due. Only a few weeks before his passing, he shuffled from his living room chair to the front door to sincerely praise his landlord. “I like the way you do business,” he said in a voice so earnest it left a sense of gratitude floating in the air. Shortly after his death, the landlord recounted this story to me, emphasizing how generous it was for my father to express such sentiments. So, the next time the clerk at Publix meticulously packs your groceries to your liking (or is it just me who cares about this?), take a moment to express gratitude for a job well done. In a world quick to criticize, let’s not forget the transformative power of a sincere compliment. It might just make someone’s day a little brighter. Y

CITY BEAT City Commission Votes to Negotiate a New Downtown In a landmark decision, the City of Pompano Beach has given the green light for a team to negotiate a master developer agreement with RocaPoint Partners, potentially paving the way for a Downtown Pompano Beach. The 4-1 approval by the City Commission marked a pivotal moment in the City’s development. RocaPoint Partners initial proposal will see more than a billion dollars flow into Northwest Pompano. RocaPoint Partners emerged as the recommended choice in a competitive, months-long bidding process. The company’s vision for a new Downtown Pompano Beach includes a blend of mixeduse spaces, green initiatives and a focus on community engagement. The only other firm in contention, Related Urban Development, formally pulled out of consideration on the day of the special meeting. The move was so last-minute that the outside consulting firm hired by the City did not have time to update its PowerPoint presentation in time for the public meeting. However, City officials expressed both enthusiasm and apprehension about the potential economic and cultural impact of the partnership. Mayor Rex Hardin stated, “I’m committed to seeing this City advance… and I see this as the best opportunity that we have.” Adding that he has been waiting for this opportunity for a quarter-century.

not sure that this is the best opportunity, but it is what it is.” The negotiation team for the City is set to commence negotiations over the coming months with RocaPoint Partners to finalize a master developer agreement. The proposed development aims to breathe new life into a historically underserved part of the City, providing a dynamic environment for businesses, residents and cultural endeavors.

CITY BEAT

Hilton’s Waldorf Astoria Will Launch its Very First Residential Concept in Pompano Beach BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU Waldorf Astoria – the globally-known luxury brand of hotels and resorts by Hilton – will launch a brand-new residential concept in Pompano Beach. Waldorf Astoria Residences, a joint venture by local developers Related Group and Merrimac Ventures in partnership with Hilton, will be a first-class, luxury residential tower consisting of 92 residential units, a café with room service, a poolside dining establishment with private cabanas, jacuzzi, wellness facilities and two dozen boat slips. The two-acre site at 1350 S. Ocean Blvd. is just about a mile south of the Pompano Beach Fisher Family Pier. “We set out to distill the timeless elegance and exclusivity of the Waldorf Astoria brand into a purely residential format,” said Nick Perez, president of Related’s condominium development group. “From the design and architecture to the resident services, we’ve pulled out all the stops to ensure this property fully embodies the Waldorf Astoria brand. There is no compromise in our approach and we are so excited to see how the market reacts to this incredible development.” The tower’s modern design, which features sleek curved edges and eye-catching contemporary details, was spearheaded by Miami-based Nichols Architects. Nichols, the architect group behind the Diplomat Beach Resort and Convention Center, the W South Beach and Miami World Tower, is known for creating stunning buildings that have helped shape Miami’s modern aesthetic. Nichols worked in collaboration

26

with KORA, BAMO and Enea Landscape Architecture to envision the residences. The building will give nod to the Waldorf Astoria by incorporating some of the brand’s signature resort elements, including Peacock Alley, a feature present at many Waldorf Astoria properties around the world. The idea behind Peacock Alley is to provide a space where, like a colorful peacock, residents can “see and be seen.” The Alley will serve as the village’s main gathering area and feature a soon-to-be-announced food and beverage concept. Brand aficionados will also spot the signature clock inspired by the original at Waldorf Astoria, New York. Inside, the property will feature an assortment of art from the Jorge M. Perez Contemporary Art Collection. Pompano Beach Mayor Rex Hardin said the fact that a luxury, global brand like Waldorf Astoria chose Pompano Beach as its premier location for its new residential concept is telling. “I think it speaks volumes about the success that Pompano Beach is

having by investing in redevelopment, utilizing smart growth and maintaining its character,” Mayor Hardin said. Additional highlights include a 20,000-square-foot oceanfront pool deck, complete with a lap-pool, outdoor bar and dining lounge, summer kitchens and resident cabanas, direct access to 200 linear feet of beachfront and a beachside cafe. The property will also feature a private marina, with 19 slips and the ability to accommodate vessels measuring up to 45 feet. A residents-only spa will have his and her saunas, steam rooms, a fitness center, studio and spin room. “We are thrilled that the reputation and expectations associated with our luxury brand will reach new audiences and buyers with our evolved approach to the real estate space,” said Dino Michael, SVP & global head of Hilton Luxury Brands. Construction of the tower is expected to be completed by late 2026. For more information visit waldorfastoriaresidencespompanobeach.com. Y

IT DAWNED ON ME

Haircuts, Trust, Divorce and other December Digressions BY DAWNE RICHARDS

A

lert readers know the perseverance it takes to finally get to the point of my columns. This month, however, even the most hardy (foolhardy?) readers may be challenged since I’m in a particularly digressive (is that a word?) mood. Recently, driving home fresh from the hair salon (always the best/worst day ever*), I pondered who we trust and why. Anyway — trust. It’s a funny thing, especially when it comes to hair, about which I’ve always been stupidly (there, I said it) trusting. I once patronized a hair salon school and told the student, “I want a new look!” Dumb, dumb, dumb. Never do that. Otherwise, I’ve had pretty good luck, particularly with “the guy who does my hair.” (too wordy, but more straightforward phrases like “my hairdresser” or “my stylist” seem pretentious, — ew ). Back to the current topic, which is… what, again? Oh, right! Trust. I’ve been going to “The guy who does my hair” (a.k.a “The Guy”) since 1994. Which, as we all know, was 10 years ago, right? Do not disabuse me of this notion. For the math-challenged, this is a really long time. Far longer than most U.S. marriages, in fact. According to Weinman & Associates, the average marriage lasts 7-8 years. Apparently, “The Seven Year Itch” isn’t just a movie. When I typed “How long does the average”; the search engine auto-filled my query with “marriage last.” Depressing. More depressing is the end of the Weinman post: “Divorce is difficult, but it’s often necessary.” There is no actual call to action, like “Considering divorce? Contact us 24/7!” The post covers the most common causes of divorce but offers no advice as to preventing them, which, I suppose, makes sense since preventing divorce is probably not in the firm’s best interest (just kidding, ish. Some of my best friends are divorce lawyers. Really.).

pointpubs.com | POMPANO!

But I digress. Wow! Bet you didn’t see that coming. So… back to the hair. And trust. Ironically, the first time I met The Guy, I was feeling down because (you guessed it) I was getting a divorce and figured a great cut and color would lift my spirits. Indeed, it did, and we’ve been friends ever since. And after all these years, I have complete faith in him. So much so that each time I go, he asks, “What are we doing today?” And I just say, “What do you think?” and let him have his way. Sometimes, I come out with a totally different hairstyle. Or cut. Or even hair color. This is amazing and probably the one area of life where I put myself entirely at the mercy of another human being. Anyway, I have no idea where I was going with that last statement, but here’s a quasi-coherent wrap-up: Find The Guy. And trust that whatever happens, well, it’s just hair. Happy Holidays! Y *Digression: best/worst day ever because (best) your hair looks amazing and (worst) you know it won’t look like that again until your next salon visit.

Cheesy Croissant Breakfast Casserole

In the world of croissant-centric breakfast casseroles, some recipes call for stale croissants, claiming they absorb liquids better. However, let’s not sacrifice flavor for texture. Pop the croissants in a hot oven for 5 to 10 minutes to impart a touch of toasty goodness.

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place the croissants on a baking sheet cut side up, and toast in the oven for about 5 to 10 minutes. Keep an eye on them so they don’t burn. Allow them to cool, and then tear them into large pieces (about two bites worth). Keep the oven on. Lightly oil a 9 x 13-inch baking dish. In a medium pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat and add the pancetta. Cook until the pancetta is crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the leeks to the pan and cook until softened about 5 minutes. Add the sage and stir to combine. Remove from the heat. In a large bowl, combine the croissants, leek mixture and pancetta. In another bowl, combine the eggs, milk, cream, 1½ cups Gruyere, salt and pepper. Whisk to combine thoroughly. Pour the croissant mixture into the prepared baking dish. Pour the egg mixture into the baking dish. I like a few croissants to stick out above the liquid so they get crispy, but that is a personal choice. Feel free to push them down so they are completely covered for a more homogeneous casserole. Scatter the remaining Gruyere over the top and place the casserole into the 350-degree oven. Bake for about 45 minutes. The casserole should be firm and not soupy. Remove from oven and let sit for 5-10 minutes before serving. Top with chopped chives. Y Note: Leeks can have a lot of sand in them. Be sure to clean well.

Rocca Trattoria. ITALIAN Rocco is a small and intimate neighbor-

We were suitably impressed with the flavor bomb that is the veal chop valdostano. The veal is butterflied, pounded thin, stuffed with prosciutto, gorgonzola, and wild mushrooms and topped with a brandy Marsala sauce. If you want something a touch lighter, the grilled salmon was delicate and fresh and prepared with garlic, fresh herbs and a touch of lemon. LAST RESORT

A Weekend Getaway to the Space Coast

BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU

D

riving down North Atlantic Ave. in Cocoa Beach, one might notice the colorful, carved Polynesian tikis, grass thatch roof and Hawaiianinspired architecture of the Westgate Cocoa Beach Resort. This newly reimagined beachside destination immediately evokes the laid-back Aloha vibes of a tropical getaway; but wander inside the courtyard of this U-shaped resort and your family will find even more to love. An enormous lazy river with raining tiki arches, plus an energetic water park with slides, water-spouting palm trees, squirting surf boards and play places, invite families to come splash around. A bar serving exotic frozen cocktails and tropical refreshments is equally inviting. All the rooms at the Westgate are two-bedroom suites (one room with a king bed, and one with two twins), two full bathrooms, a living room, dining table and fully stocked kitchen. This allows you to cook some meals at home if you so desire, and create a home-awayfrom-home. Just behind the resort is the beautiful ocean; there, families will have access to the resort’s private beach bed lounges and a secluded walkway to the sand. During the day, this peaceful beach is wonderful for sunbathing and sand-castle-building. At night, this very sand attracts crowds of people to watch SpaceX rockets launch from the Kennedy Space Center just a few miles away. Witnessing the glowing trail of a rocket as it ascends into outer space is an unforgettable experience not to be missed; so check the launch schedule and try to time your trip right. Be sure to also visit the Kennedy Space Center for a full day of immersive experiences teaching you and your kids about the history of Apollo missions, NASA and space exploration.
