To save the historic McNab house, it had to be moved — yes moved — down the Boulevard to a new location. The city plans to lease out the space for a new restaurant. Read Marie Puleo’s story on plans for the house plus see Jeff Graves’ photos of the big move.

OK, there’s homes and then there are homes. This month we take you inside one of Pompano’s exceptional houses. With wrap around waterfront views, it wouldn’t be so bad to be quarantined inside this palace. Take a peek!

Creatively Speaking

My Faith in Humanity BY SUSAN ROSSER

Way back in February you would be hard pressed to find any American who thought we were united as nation. In fact, you often hear about how divided we are. And yet, as I write this, we’ve all decided we must now sacrifice for the greater good. I am hoping that by the time this issue comes out we are all feeling a little better about the situation – which is a weird one at best. But who knows what tomorrow brings? Never has the answer to that question been more obvious. No one. We find ourselves thinking as a community more than I can ever remember. If you are young and healthy, you probably aren’t too afraid of catching the coronavirus. You figure it’s a week of feeling pretty lousy and then maybe another week where you might feel a bit run down. Nothing a little nap and whole bunch of Tylenol can’t solve. But the reason we take such extreme measures is not to protect our own individual selves. The reason we close schools, universities, offices and Disney World is to protect the most vulnerable among us. By now, we’ve all heard the term “flatten the curve.” We are trying to flatten the curve so our healthcare system won’t be overwhelmed while taking care of the sickest patients. And hopefully — God willing — most of us won’t get that sick. But it is crucial that intensive care is available for those who need it. So many are sacrificing so much. When colleges and universities shuttered their doors, I kept thinking about all the college seniors who might be robbed of their last semester. Yes, I know most of those students will be fine in the long run. And I understand there are people who face much more significant hardships during this crisis. The most vulnerable might not only be struggling to stay healthy, but just to get by. But, something about those college seniors just tugged at my heartstrings. Maybe because I remember trying to relish in my life as a college senior as the

10 pointpubs.com •

POINT! PUBLISHING

whole experience gradually came to a close. I remember graduation, the final goodbyes and arriving back home while wondering “did all that just really end?” So yes, I think about those kids and what they are missing. This crisis has unveiled just how vulnerable many of us are. My hope is that when this passes —and it will pass — that we have some sort of a collective memory to guide us moving forward. We need to take care of each other not only in bad times — but all of the time. I hope that is the silver lining (not to mention all the pasta I plan to eat over the coming weeks without one single ounce of guilt). As for me, I’ve always been somewhat of a homebody. Basically, I’ve been social distancing since I was 12. But still, I feel the sacrifice. So in these difficult times with our stress levels up and our bank accounts down, it’s more important than ever to seek out goodness where we can. To find a touch of pride in our collective efforts. And while I am saddened by the games that won’t be played or the performances that won’t be performed and all the celebrations to be postponed; I am beyond encouraged by our willingness to sacrifice. Each and every one of these tremendously difficult decisions represent humanity at its absolute best. All of this brings a smile to my face – and smiling has been proven to strengthen your immune system. So there’s that.

General in October 2018. “Since then, I have witnessed Mayor Rex Hardin’s effort to help my fellow Brazilians in this region,” said Pereira. “He has established a highlevel institutional dialogue with us in the Consulate.” Hardin has made the Pompano Beach City Hall facilities available to the Consulate General to serve as an outpost for the large population of Brazilians living in the Pompano Beach area and further north, so they don’t have to travel so far. Pereira said Hardin was “a facilitator of good bilateral relations between Brazil and the United States of America,” and has shown “his affection and admiration” for the people and culture of Brazil. “I am truly honored,” said Hardin. “I have made it a point throughout my term as City Commissioner and Mayor to try to represent everyone in our city, and that includes those of Brazilian descent, and every other nationality and creed.” Hardin said the Brazilian community has felt a need to be better represented, and that’s why he reached out to Pereira. It was the opportunity for “a fresh start” and to really engage the Brazilian community and help them with the services that Pompano Beach can provide, he said.Y

Long-Awaited Charlotte J. Burrie Civic Center Opens Its Doors The long-awaited Charlotte J. Burrie Civic Center, located at 2669 N. Federal Highway in Pompano Beach, had its grand opening last month, and residents and city officials gathered for the celebration. Former Pompano Beach Vice Mayor Charlotte J. Burrie joined Mayor Rex Hardin, the entire City Commission, and Broward County Commissioner Lamar Fisher in the ceremonious ribbon-cutting. “The building may bear my name,” said Burrie, “but it’s here for the people to enjoy, and for recreation that’s safe and clean.” The 8,700-square-foot civic center, in Pompano’s Cresthaven neighborhood, includes a reception area, an administrative office, two multi-purpose activity rooms, a conference room, a warming kitchen and a large assembly space with a fixed platform stage and adjacent dressing rooms. The assembly space can hold 170 people theaterstyle or 120 people banquet-style. The building has a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. “This is one of the major milestones in our city,” said Mayor Rex Hardin, who praised Burrie for her many years of service to the City of Pompano Beach. Due to the current Coronavirus, public health emergency, usage and events at the Charlotte J. Burrie Civic Center will be limited for the near future. Burrie, who has lived in Pompano Beach for over 50 years, served as city commissioner of District 2, where the civic center is located. Burrie pushed for a civic center for

her constituents from the time she was elected in 2007, until she left office in 2018. Several years ago, members of the Cresthaven Civic Association spoke at a City Commission meeting and presented a petition that raised $500 towards the new civic center and requested it be named after Burrie. “This is something that has been driven by the community and that was spearheaded by former Vice Mayor Burrie, and she has achieved her goal in a grand way,” said current District 2 Commissioner Rhonda Eaton. “It’s an incredible asset to our city that we’ll enjoy for decades to come.” Burrie served the city for 25 years – as an assistant to the city attorney, as city clerk, and as city commissioner. In 2015, she was selected by the City Commission to serve as Vice Mayor of Pompano Beach. Burrie was also an attorney in private practice for almost thirty

years. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department will oversee the programming at the civic center. There are already plans for yoga, fitness, karate, dance and Spanish lessons. The Cresthaven Civic Association, which was created in 1957, has held its monthly meetings at the local Moose Lodge for the past 15 years. The meetings, which take place on the second Thursday of every month at 7pm, will now be held at the new civic center. Additional amenities will be constructed on property at 2671 N. Federal Highway, directly north of the civic center, where a Denny’s restaurant once stood. Those amenities will include a pavilion and oval-shaped artificial turf area to be used for community activities, and an open area with playground equipment. The grand opening of the newly reconstructed Pompano Beach Pier, recently renamed the Fisher Family Pier, was slated to take place last month, but due to the Coronavirus public health emergency, those plans have been put on hold. City officials had planned to have a big ribbon-cutting celebration, and expected thousands of people to attend, but on March 12, the City announced that, effective March 16, it would be cancelling or postponing public gatherings – all events, meetings (including City Commission meetings) and programs in City facilities. The pier had already experienced several delays in opening. Most recently, the City had been waiting on the completion of a

Rosario Harker, one of the mosaic artists, participated in the civic center’s grand opening celebration. Shiff Construction & Development, a Pompano Beach contractor, constructed the Charlotte J. Burrie Civic Center building at a cost of $4,498,475. Construction on the building began in June 2018. The estimated cost to develop the old Denny’s site is between $700,000 and $1 million. The City will be completing the construction of the amenities on the old Denny’s property in-house, acting as the general contractor, which consists of hiring all the subcontractors under separate contracts. Even before Burrie came into office, the city had plans to build a civic center, but they never materialized. After considering several sites, the city purchased the original lot on Federal Highway for $1,150,000 in 2013. Until now, District 2 was one of the only communities in Pompano Beach without a civic center. “Now this community has this gorgeous building to enjoy and recreate and have fun,” said Burrie. Y

City officials had said they wanted to wait until work on the arch was done and pedestrians could safely access the pier. The City’s measures to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus will be in place for the foreseeable future, and no new date has been given for the pier’s grand opening. The City’s website www.pompanobeachfl. gov offers several Coronavirus informational links. Pompano Peeps The 17th Annual Sailfish Challenge

The 17th Annual Sailfish Challenge was one for the history books in many ways. 55 teams were treated to an amazing kick-off party hosted for the first time by Oceanic at the Pompano Beach Pier. The tournament partnered with Costa and their “OneCoast” initiative to help with the ongoing fundraising effort for Bahamas Relief from Hurricane Dorian. A cold-front brought strong northerly winds on day one. With the fleet spread out from Jupiter to Miami, it was a slow pick for most of the day Team Chop it Up had the best meatfish catch of the day with 118.8 pounds that earned them a daily payout of $7,560. Heading into day two, a forecast for gale force winds and 12 to 15-foot seas led to a postponed fishing schedule from Saturday to Sunday. Despite tough fishing, team Reel Estate/Shell Yeah stayed steady — releasing three fish before noon to jump into the lead with six releases. As the day pressed on teams Jichi, Reel Addiction, and Doing it All/Hardway evened the score with six releases a piece as well. Reel Estate/Shell Yeah was able to hang on to their time-based lead and win the tournament, earning a check for $38,125. Nicole Paul-Hus on team SkipJac 2 was the top female angler with 1 release and Benji Fernandez on team Potential was the master angler of the tournament with three releases. Branch Office defended their Non-Pro division title for the third year in a row with two releases.

In Case You Missed It

State of the City BY JEFF LEVINE ONE OF THE DIFFICULTIES IN WRITING FOR A MONTHLY MAGAZINE IS THE GAP BETWEEN WHEN WE WRITE OUR COLUMNS AND WHEN YOU READ THEM. SO, WE WILL TAKE our city and federal governments at their word when they tell us by the time you read this the Fishing Pier will finally have opened (the city has promised a March grand opening) and the novel coronavirus will have subsided (due to the warmer April weather we've been told).

Speaking of the pier, kudos to the city commission for offering a $20 annual pass for residents. In a city rapidly changing, I'm glad to see our government listening to and addressing the concerns of residents.

State of The City The state of the city is good, really good. That according to Pompano Beach Mayor Rex Hardin, who gave his first State of ABOVE Pompano Beach City Commissioners Beverly Perkins, Andrea McGee. the City address at a special Greater Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce meeting a month ago. The Mayor came off as knowledgeable, likeable and extremely positive. He called Pompano Beach, "a city on the move." He talked about many of the residential developments underway (7,000 new units according to the mayor, our count has it potentially in the 10,000 range). He also spoke of the need for more commercial/industrial space in the city (industrial vacancy is a low 3.2 percent), which he believes will add more "good paying jobs" in the city, his excitement for the plan to turn the Isle Casino into the LIVE! complex, which he says will be "the size of a small city" when completed. Hardin also raved about changes to John Knox Village ("a lively update [as] a lifestyle community," a plan to turn A1A into a "more colorful eye catching road," the "robust arts and culture scene" developing in the city and converting the Pompano Beach Amphitheatre from a "white elephant" to a venue "packed to the rafters" once the seating area is covered by a large awning. In showcasing the many positives in Pompano Beach, the mayor shied away from the controversies surrounding the rapid growth in the city. There was no mention of controversial projects being planned; including Hidden Harbour, the large residential and commercial development near 14th Street and Federal Highway or the Lovin' Oven catering facility, across from the Oceanic restaurant by the pier, both of which have unnerved area residents. The mayor also failed to address the larger concern that Pompano Beach could wind up becoming a sea of hi-rises and what the city will do to balance the competing desires for both new development and maintaining our green space and blue skies. Hardin did acknowledge "traffic is a problem" and said the city is already addressing roadway improvements particularly in the LIVE!/Isle Casino area. He shared plans to operate golf carts

and trolleys along A1A and Atlantic Boulevard and an overall goal to keep people "close to the street" via mixed use construction projects (stores on the bottom floor; apartments above them) and to create an environment that allows less dependency on cars. It was good to see him recognize the traffic troubles we will be facing in the coming years. There is still a lot more to do if the city wants to truly fix the problem. Pompano is counting on changing resident's habits — less driving and more walking or using mass transportation. Good causes for sure — not just for reducing traffic but as part of an effort to save the planet! However, I am a bit cynical, as South Floridians don't seem to adapt to change well. We can't even do a good job separating our recyclables (re: the recent Waste Management controversy). And, we all know how hard it has been for residents to stay off the railroad tracks when the barricades are down. If we can't manage those two simple changes, I'm not all that confident we will be able to change our driving habits enough to prevent gridlock throughout Pompano Beach. Y APRIL 2020 • pointpubs.com

It Dawned On Me

The Tax Man Cometh, and I Cometh with Cats ALERT READERS WILL RECALL THAT WE’VE ADOPTED TWO KITTENS. (THEY’RE GROWING LIKE WEEDS, AND THEY’RE THE MOST BRILLIANT AND BEAUTIFUL CATS IN CAT HISTORY, thanks for asking. I’d be happy to send you videos, photos, and their school report cards. I know; you can’t wait.) I bet you’re wondering, “What do cats and taxes have in common?” The answer is: Nothing! Unless you’re me. And no, I’m not claiming the fetching felines as dependents, although they cost enough. But I digress, as usual. Recently, all three cats (the kittens and our senior, Percy) had vet appointments. My son usually does this, but on that day, as my (bad) luck would have it, he had other pressing issues.

“Mom!” I shuddered. That one word – in that one tone – strikes fear in the hearts of mothers everywhere. We know what’s coming; pick one (or more!): 1. I broke something incredibly valuable 2. I need money 3. I need a favor; it’s going to be the last thing on earth you want to do, but… “Mom!”

I took three cleansing breaths. “What’s up, sweetheart?” I responded, through gritted teeth. And…Door #3. He unleashed a terrifying stream of consciousness of need: “IknowitsmyjobbutIhavethisthingandtheyreallyneedtogotodayandsosorryand…anyway, can you please please take them?” “ALL THREE?” I shuddered in disbelief. “AT ONE TIME???” “Yeah,” sheepishly. “Sure.” By this point, I also needed a dentist appointment, having ground my teeth to the bone. Of course, I was due at our financial advisor’s office in 90 minutes, to begin preparing my taxes, and it was already midafternoon. I called the financial advisor’s office and explained my dilemma to his assistant. I’m sure they hear about cat conflicts all. the.time. Right??? So,” I concluded, “he [the financial advisor] has two choices: 1. He can stay 30 minutes late today (on a Friday!) so that I can get the cats home, and then come into the office. But reallyyourofficeisrightnearthevetandtheyareintheircratesandtheyareawesome… [OMG. I sounded just like the boy. It’s contagious!] Or… 2. I can just bring the cats to your office!” I smiled, sure that she could see my bright, hopeful face over the phone. (“Smile! It’s contagious!”) I held on while she relayed my request; to my semi-surprise, she returned to the phone and said, “He said sure thing, bring the cats.” Excellent! I pulled into his parking lot and walked to his office carrying my purse and three cat carriers. And then it struck me: I’ve become a stereotype. Shoppers throughout the plaza were no doubt on their cell phones, relaying the scene: “OMG! I just saw a woman walk into a financial advisor’s office carrying THREE CATS IN CARRIERS. Only in Florida! I’m sending you the video.” I could almost hear them, except the carriers were sort of banging against each other in a cat-cophany. Anyway, here’s the moral of the story (actually, there are several): 1. If you need something, just ask! 2. Where there’s a will (and you have enough cat carriers), there’s a way. 3. (Most important) Find yourself a financial advisor who says, “Of COURSE she can bring her cats!” Y

Personal Development

Carrots and Sticks and Following Through

TELLING THE TRUTH IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES PARENTS HAVE WHEN IT COMES TO THEIR KIDS. NOW I KNOW THERE ARE SOME OF YOU READING THIS WHO are thinking, “What? I never lie to my kids. I would never do that.” I don’t mean the same lies you told your parents when you were in high school. That’s completely different. What I am talking about is disciplining your child and telling the truth. Kids will always test the boundaries. If you tell them not to step over the line, you can bet there will be a toe on the other side just to see what will happen. I’m sure you’ve been in that moment (as I have) when your child misbehaves or doesn’t listen. It’s frustrating and depending on what type of day you might have had, you react a little more harshly than you intended. You may have yelled out things like this... “If you do that again you are grounded for a week!” or “If you don’t pick up these toys, I am going to give them away to another child who will appreciate them!” Here’s the challenge: If the child still does not respond favorably to your ultimatum and you don’t follow through, they will start to call your bluff. The child will realize (sooner rather than later) you are not serious, and you are not going to do what you said. This is the recipe for disaster as a parent! Your child will never respect what you say when it comes to discipline. So, my suggestion to you is always tell the truth. Most importantly, make sure when you lay out an ultimatum with your child that you are 100 percent ready, willing, and able

BY CRAIG HALEY

to follow through. They must be certain you will take the action. The root word of discipline is disciple which means to teach. When you discipline your child, you are teaching them the right way to behave. Discipline is a good thing. Everyone needs it. You are showing them how to act and be successful in the world. Here’s the key: Discipline your child out of love, not anger. Never throw out idle threats because you feel frustrated. The reality is you may not be able to follow through. Instead, keep your cool, focus on the behavior you do want, and take the appropriate actions. This will be tough for both of you. It may mean you have to stay in the night when they are being grounded. But when you are consistent, your child will know there is no wiggle room. They will know you mean what you say and when you ask them to change their behavior, they are far more likely to listen.

KEEP YOUR PROMISES! As parents, it’s easy for us to keep the fun promises. You might have said things like this... “If you pick up your room in the next 10 minutes, we will go for ice cream!” or “If you show me an awesome report card next month, we will go on a special weekend trip.” Those are fun promises to keep. Everyone will have a blast. You will encourage your child and remind them to do what they have to so they (and you) can get the reward. I bet you would be looking forward to that experience as well. Again, it’s a fun promise to keep. Here’s the challenge: Most parents will keep the fun (positive) promises but not the negative ones. It’s easy to keep your promise about going to Disney but difficult to keep your promise about not going to the movies. You must be willing to follow through. Let me say that again, you must be willing to follow through! When you follow through, you are teaching your child you always tell the truth and you will keep your promises, both positive and negative. This creates a sense of certainty. You become a person your child can always count on. They will get to know who you are and what you stand for. Believe it or not, kids want certainty. They want to be led. They will become happier and more confident kids because of it. Y Master Shihan Craig Haley is the Seventh Degree Black Belt instructor at Elite Force Martial Arts, eliteforcemartialarts.com.

DAY

McNAB HOUSE MAKES ITS HISTORIC JOURNEY TO McNAB PARK BY MARIE PULEO

PHOTOS BY JEFF GRAVES

APRIL 2020 • pointpubs.com

Hundreds of people gathered

along Atlantic Boulevard early in the morning on Sunday, March 1, to watch as the historic McNab House was moved from its original site at 1736 E. Atlantic Boulevard five blocks east to its new home in McNab Park. The 1,800-foot journey took approximately 11 hours to complete.

The relocation of the two-story house, as well as the detached twostory garage, was expected to last from about 7am until 12pm, but it took more time than anticipated for utility companies to move overhead wires and five traffic signal mast arms out of the way. The move was completed at about 6pm.“All we can do is guess about how long it will take to do this and do that,” said Pat Burdette, owner of Modern House & Building Movers, based in Orlando, “but the main thing is everybody has to make sure it’s done safely.” Everything went “basically as planned,” said Burdette, even though it took longer than expected. Burdette and his two employees excavated and prepared the McNab House and garage for transport, a five-monthlong process that began last September. On moving day, they were assisted by five people from two other moving companies – Youngblood & Sons Building Movers in Sanford, Florida, and Russell Building Movers in Miami. The house and garage were transported on multiple dollies equipped with eight aircraft tires each. The dollies were placed beneath steel beams supporting the foundations of the structures. The house was pulled

by one four-wheeled front-end loader and a truck. The garage followed behind the house, pulled by a front-end loader as well. The house straddled the median of Atlantic Boulevard, while the garage traveled in the eastbound lanes. The house, built in 1926, weighs 450 tons (900,000 pounds), and the garage weighs 103 tons (206,000 pounds), according to Burdette. Both structures are made of clay tile covered with brick. One of the most critical aspects of the transport was getting the house and garage over the curbs.

The moving crew placed about 50 rectangular steel plates over the curbs at the old site and at McNab Park, as well as over portions of the median in Atlantic Boulevard, to serve as a ramp for the structures to travel over. Each steel plate was handled individually by front-end loaders and placed into position, which was a time-consuming process. The steel plates were also placed over the sand at McNab Park so the wheels of the dollies wouldn’t get stuck. One of the dollies under the house ran off the steel plates and the wheels got buried in the sand. Burdette and his team had to stop to jack the dolly up and put mats under it. The house was placed at the northeast corner of McNab Park fronting Atlantic Boulevard, where the recentlydemolished civic building and shuffle board courts once stood. The garage was placed to the west of the house. The house will be converted into a restaurant. The garage will be repurposed as a coffee bar, eating area or some other use tied to the restaurant, according to Nguyen Tran, director of the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), which is carrying out the project.

There are plans to create a basement beneath the house that will be used as a wine bar consisting of two main rooms and a couple of smaller rooms. The house was placed in the park at an angle. About a week later, it was rotated, so it directly faces Atlantic Boulevard. The garage was later put in its final position, which was a little further to the south and west. Once the house was positioned, Burdette had to

We swooned over the shiitake buns, mushrooms with pickled sour mustard, ground peanuts and cilantro all on a steamed rice bun. The gyoza were also a star — the dough was light and tender with a flavorful pork and vegetable filling. The restaurant has a comprehensive sushi menu, but this is definitely a place to order outside of your comfort zone. After all, isn’t sushi the new pizza? 143 SW Sixth St., 954-532-4567 $$

If you are looking for a standout salad, the watermelon arugula salad with grilled shrimp is a perfect choice. The ingredients really shined with top notch shrimp served over juicy watermelon and peppery arugula all dressed with a light vinaigrette. The shrimp and grits were prepared traditionally and packed with flavor. For meat lovers, the baby back ribs were melting off the bone and there was enough for a doggy bag. So Close, Yet So Far Away

THE INN ON FIFTH, NAPLES

BY RICHARD ROSSER

Often, a hotel is remembered by how it made you feel during your stay. The Inn on Fifth delivers an escape to luxury, tranquility and a large helping of charm that emanates from the heart of “old” Naples. My wife Susie and I enjoyed a few days there for a change of pace. At the time I am writing this, I can see many readers seeking something exactly like this escape. The Inn’s two iconic structures face each other across fashionable Fifth Avenue South. They are mirror images of elegance — reflecting the best of downtown Naples and its celebrated entertainment, shopping and dining district. And with a sugar-white stretch of world famous beach just a short stroll down the avenue and easy access to some of Florida’s most exclusive golf courses and legendary natural attractions, the Inn on Fifth is one of Naples’ most enviable locations. Sophisticated yet unpretentious, the Inn is intimate in scale and rich in amenities. All guests can enjoy the rooftop oasis pool, the soothing Spa on Fifth, two award-winning restaurants and 24-hour fitness center. The Inn on Fifth Club Level Suites provide an enhanced guest experience, with personal concierge, secluded rooftop retreat, daily culinary delights and so much more. All of this is just a short drive away.

TOP The Inn on Fifth in Downtown Naples, Florida MIDDLE The Inn on Fifth is home to 119 elegantly appointed, non-smoking guest rooms and suites. Rooms are upscale and stylish, with a sophisticated black-and-white color scheme and pops of red, and great amenities such as iPod docks, flatscreen TVs and free Wi-Fi. There are also 32 luxurious club level suites in a separate, private building. RIGHT The roof top pool is the perfect place for a quiet day in the sun.
