Superior Results for Hip and Knee Surgery Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice

My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the first phone call, you will find my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs. I care for people in their 80s and 90s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20s and 30s who desire an improved quality of life and want to feel “normal” again.

Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery

My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient. “Dr. Leone put my body back together. I was a long-time runner and now at 83-years-old all my pain is finally gone!”

~Tracey M, full and partial knee replacement patient

“I will forever be grateful to Dr. Leone and his amazing staff at Holy Cross. I can honestly say Dr. Leone is the most kind, patient, incredible doctor I have ever met. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

~Liyah, 32 years old, total hip replacement patient

For this to happen by the start of the next school year, trials need to prove the vaccine is safe and effective in children. Experts say manufacturers aren’t moving quickly enough, and that this is important for achieving herd immunity and stopping the spread of variants.

The Green Market in Pompano Beach is a perfect way to spend a Saturday morning in April. The market is outdoors and you can buy all your fresh fruits and veggies. Of course there is way more than produce. You might find candles, cakes; honey, cheesecake, pickles, bread, soaps, brownies, hot sauce and more.

A Love Letter to Restaurants BY SUSAN ROSSER

My Dearest Restaurants, I would like to start with an apology. For years, I took you for granted. How silly to think I could merely pop in whenever it suited me. That you would always be there for me. What a fool I was. Just days before the lockdown last spring, I recall friends asking if my husband and I would like to meet for an impromptu dinner at a neighborhood joint. I was tired from a busy work week and declined. Oh, how I regret this decision. For months after that, I mostly lived without you—relegated only to take-out and delivery. Those meals were a welcome break from the constant cycle of loading and unloading the dishwasher—not to mention the actual cooking. Nevertheless, I missed the experience of dining out—of being in the moment. I took for granted the energy that surrounded me as I devoured a plate of pasta in a roomful of perfect strangers. I know people often consider universities, schools and religious institutions to be the cornerstones of our communities. And while those are undoubtedly crucial, after the year we just had, I would add restaurants to that list. Restaurants are where we go to meet friends and business associates. It’s where we take a first date. And of course, we celebrate birthdays, graduations and anniversaries at our favorite spots. ABOVE Lunch to go— ahi tuna and salmon poké bowls from The Poké Company in Pompano Beach Mrs. Kossenfloffer for Lighthouse Point magazine

POINT! PUBLISHING

But my dear restaurants, it wasn’t only the big and celebratory dinners I longed for. I missed the tiny and seemingly trivial experiences that add up to something wondrous. I missed breadbaskets. I missed being greeted at the door, walking beside the host with enthusiastic anticipation. Where would we be seated? Would we get the coveted window table? A table near the bar? I missed casually striking up a conversation with complete strangers while we waited for a table. I missed eating at the bar—when the bartender lays down a folded cloth napkin, signaling the imminent arrival of dinner. I missed the moment the door opens, and a rush of warm and humid South Florida air wafts past, beckoning a new arrival. And while I love to try new places and new foods, I also cherish being a regular. When a server knows how I take my coffee or when I am greeted by name—well, that counts for a lot. Let’s face it, we all like to feel special from time to time. And perhaps no effort accomplishes that as well as friendly service at a neighborhood eatery. I am a superstitious person, so I don’t want to jinx anything— but as we find ourselves hopefully on the verge of some semblance of normalcy—I, for one, cannot wait to simply eat out whenever the mood strikes. A relaxing or even raucous Saturday night dinner girds me for the week ahead. And I’ve missed it all, from the humble trip to the classic diner for scrambled eggs, toast and coffee all the way to lobster fra diavolo and everything in between. Just as a delicious home-cooked dinner connects us with family and friends, a meal at a restaurant connects us to our community. We are not only what we eat; we are also where we eat.

Pompano Beach Launches Its Real Time Crime Center The City of Pompano Beach has a new Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) that was launched in February by the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Pompano Beach District. Major Wayne Adkins, chief of the BSO Pompano Beach District, said the RTCC “is an important tool in BSO’s toolbox” to help Pompano Beach deputies respond to and solve crimes. The RTCC is located in the Pompano Beach Public Safety Complex at 120 SW Third Street. The RTCC uses technology, access to video and other investigative details to convey information to deputies in real time. This enables responding units to more quickly take the appropriate action and send the appropriate number of units to assist. The RTTC includes a real-time gunshot detection and alert system, called ShotSpotter, which began operating in a five-square-mile area of Pompano Beach last month. The City Commission voted last October to implement the ShotSpotter system, which uses acoustic sensors to detect and locate outdoor gunfire in real-time, and within 60 seconds, alerts law enforcement. Detectives in the Pompano Beach District RTCC have helped solve about a dozen crimes since the RTCC became operational. Detectives were able to help locate stolen

vehicles, recover video of burglary suspects and locate a vehicle used in car burglaries. The RTCC was also able to locate video of six suspects who entered a construction site at one of the city’s recreation centers and damaged the construction equipment. The Pompano Beach District RTCC has been two years in the making, said Adkins, who oversaw its creation. The concept was first discussed in 2019, shortly after the BSO opened the BSO Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) at the Public Safety Building in Fort Lauderdale. The Pompano Beach District RTCC works independently of the

BSO RTCC. However, detectives at both RTCCs communicate frequently regarding ongoing incidents. The Pompano Beach District RTCC has access to video cameras at city buildings and parks and seeks to expand partnerships with private businesses, houses of worship and anyone interested in protecting their community, said Adkins. School cameras are currently accessible at the BSO RTCC. It has cost approximately $97,600 over the past two years to create the Pompano Beach District RTCC, with funding from the BSO Pompano Beach District police services budget. Y

A Multi-Family Residential Project Is Planned for Old Club Cinema Site Redevelopment plans are underway for an 8-acre site along North Federal Highway in Pompano Beach, just south of Shoppers Haven and the RaceTrac gas station on NE 33rd Street. Encore Capital Management is proposing to build approximately 285 rental apartments on the site, which was once occupied by Club Cinema and a strip shopping center. The property, located at 3151-3251 N. Federal Highway, was recently put under contract for purchase by Encore Capital Management,

name was a reference to the movie theater that originally occupied the building, which dated to 1960. There were plans to build a Walmart Neighborhood Market on the site, but Walmart ultimately decided not to go through with the project. The site of the proposed multifamily development is adjacent to the Cresthaven neighborhood, which lies to the west. Encore has not submitted official plans to the City yet, but recently presented

headquartered in Boca Raton. Last year, the current property owner, 1307 South Wabash, LLC, demolished all the structures on the site, including the former Club Cinema building, to make way for redevelopment due to concerns the City had about some of the older, vacant structures. Club Cinema, a popular entertainment venue, had a reputation for unseemly activities, including widespread drug use and drug trafficking. The club’s

preliminary plans to the Cresthaven Civic Association via a Zoom meeting. According to the concept plan, the multi-family project would consist of four 6-story residential buildings. Two buildings would be adjacent to Federal Highway and two buildings would be adjacent to the Cresthaven neighborhood. To make the buildings “less obtrusive,” they would face north-south, so that only the ends of the buildings would be parallel to the neighborhood and

Federal Highway, and not the entire length of the buildings, explained Joe DiCristina, president of Encore’s multi-family division. There would be one access point on Federal Highway into and out of the development and an access point on NE 33rd Street that would serve only as an exit. There would be no access point on the west side of the site. The two residential buildings adjacent to Federal Highway would line the roadway leading into and out of the development. These buildings would have “live-work” units on the ground floor that would serve as commercial space for smaller local tenants, like a coffee shop, or as an office for a professional, such as an accountant, interior designer or attorney, said DiCristina. The north-south facing orientation of the buildings also allows the developer to create “a proper street grid within the property” and preserve a “traditional neighborhood atmosphere,” said Ryan Williams, who works with DiCristina in Encore’s multi-family division. The main goal is “privacy and quietness” for new residents as well as old residents, said Williams. An existing wall that runs along the west property line, adjacent to neighborhood homes, will remain. The plan is to enhance the wall and add landscaping so the west edge of the property “blends nicely with the neighborhood.” Amenities include a large courtyard and pool area on the west side of the project and a full-service gym. The idea is to set aside space in the courtyard for residents >>>

A Multi-Family Residential Project Is Planned for Old Club Cinema Site <<< of the development to use as an urban community garden. There would also be a space for games such as bocce ball. The project would include several surface parking areas with controlled access and two parking garages with two levels. The garages would be enclosed with “some sort of interesting aesthetic and design,” and would be surrounded by heavy landscaping, said Williams. DiCristina emphasized that Encore is a long-term owner of the multifamily properties it develops instead of a developer that constructs a project and then sells it shortly after. Because Encore holds its properties long-term, better quality materials are used, and there’s a strong focus on developing and managing a product that makes Encore “a quality neighbor to the community,” said DiCristina. Encore currently operates about 5,000 apartments around the country, according to DiCristina. In Broward County, the firm recently completed a 30-story apartment tower with street-level office and retail space in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Encore is also redeveloping the Plantation Fashion Mall as Plantation Walk, a 27-acre mixed-use development that includes 700 apartments. During Encore’s presentation of the multi-family project to the Cresthaven Civic Association, one resident expressed concern about increased traffic and the congestion that already exists at the intersection of NE 33rd Street and Federal Highway. Matthew Scott of Dunay, Miskel, and Backman, the land use and zoning attorney for Encore, said that, 16 pointpubs.com •

POINT! PUBLISHING

based on the initial traffic data the developer has compiled, the project would generate approximately 2,000 or less new daily vehicle trips, whereas a commercial project like Walmart would typically generate 4,000 to 5,000 daily vehicle trips. The plan is for all of the residential units to be rented at market rate – approximately $1,800 to $2,000 per month. Roughly 50% of the residential units would have two or more bedrooms. The units would be leased through a management company, and it would be stipulated that tenants cannot sublease the units, or do any kind of short-term rentals.

According to the concept plan, the multi-family project would consist of four 6-story residential buildings. Two buildings would be adjacent to Federal Highway and two buildings would be adjacent to the Cresthaven neighborhood. The project site is currently zoned as a business district, but the City’s zoning code allows multi-family development on the property with the allocation of “flexibility units,” said Matthew Scott of Dunay, Miskel, and Backman, the land use and zoning attorney for Encore. The developer’s first step will be to apply to the City for the flexibility units, which will need to be approved by the City Commission. The developer will also go through a site plan review process. The project is expected to start construction in about a year, once the pre-construction process is completed. The residential development would be ready to open

towards the latter part of 2023, said DiCristina. Commissioner Rhonda Eaton of District 2, where the project site is located, said she has seen a number of presentations from other developers, but likes the one from Encore “very much.” Eaton estimates the project would add about 700 residents to the area, which she recognizes is “hard” for current residents. Eaton acknowledged the traffic congestion at the intersection of NE 33rd Street and Federal Highway, but said the City has plans to rework the intersection. Eaton also noted that the development being proposed by Encore would generate less traffic than a grocery store, a busy restaurant or a strip mall. She said that with the new trend of working from home, the vehicle trips generated by the project would probably be less than anticipated. Regarding the design, Eaton commented that wind and light would flow through the development “very nicely,” as opposed to “just a big, flat unimaginative design.” Eaton concluded by saying “there’s no doubt” vagrancy is currently an issue at the vacant project site, and she’d like to see something there that is compatible with the community, “rather than let it sit fallow for another 10 or 15 years, and just be an eyesore and a nuisance.” “I know it’s not going to please everyone,” said Eaton of the proposed residential development, “but in the long-term, I feel strongly that’s it’s going to be an enhancement to our community.” Y

Community Meeting To Be Held for McNab House & Botanical Gardens Project Members of the community will have an opportunity to provide their input regarding the development of the McNab House and Botanical Gardens during a virtual meeting hosted by the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) this month. The architects of the McNab House & Botanical Gardens project, Bermello Ajamil & Partners (B&A), will lead the interactive meeting and present a concept design for the McNab Park site. B&A is targeting mid-April to hold the meeting via Zoom. The meeting will take place at about 6pm in the hope of reaching more people after work hours and getting maximum public input, said CRA Director Nguyen Tran. The exact date and time of the meeting, and how to sign up, will be posted on the CRA web page:

was required for the foundation and stem walls, which will be the basement of the house. The plan is to use the basement as a wine bar. Sometime this month, the house is expected to be lowered six or seven inches onto the foundation, according to Pat Burdette of Modern House & Building Movers. The CRA will be issuing a solicitation for a restaurant operator soon, said Tran. In January, the CRA approved the acquisition of property at the northwest corner of McNab Park that was formerly occupied by the Chamber of Commerce. The CRA expects to close on the Chamber property by this month, and the Chamber building will be demolished shortly thereafter. The CRA will incorporate the property into the McNab House and Botanical Gardens project. Y

Pompano’s New and Free Shuttle Service Will Start Up Soon A new free shuttle service that will connect residents and visitors to various destinations within the beach area and along Atlantic Boulevard via golf cart will be operational soon, possibly at the end of April or sometime in May, according to city officials. In February, the Pompano Beach

City Commission approved a contract with Circuit Transit, the firm operating the shuttle service. The fleet will consist of four electric golf carts, including one that is wheelchair-accessible. The shuttle route will go up and down the barrier island, as far north as the Hillsboro Inlet Park, and as far south as Terra Mar Drive. On Atlantic Boulevard, it will go as far

route, stopping at locations such as the Marriott hotel and the Residence Inn on A1A, the Beach House and Oceanic restaurants, the Fisher Family Pier, the Pier Parking Garage, the Briny Pub and the Foundry restaurant. To catch a ride, passengers will be able to wave down a driver as the golf cart is approaching. They can also use a free mobile phone app

to request pickup along the route, including their residence or hotel, for transport to and from area restaurants and other amenities. The overall objective of the shuttle service is to reduce emissions and traffic congestion, according to Jeff Lantz, the city’s parking operation manager. If the golf cart service is popular, the city will implement a second phase using a trolleybus or other vehicle with more seating. In all cases, the city will use low-emission or noemission vehicles, said Lantz. The second phase of the transit system would run further west along Atlantic Boulevard, all the way to Old Town, City Hall, the Cultural Center and the future Innovation District. It could potentially go as far west as the Isle Casino. This portion of the shuttle service may or may not be free, but a monthly fee or day pass could be offered. The plan is to have a park-andride hub at the northwest corner of the South Federal Highway and SE Second Street intersection. This would provide a parking alternative for employees working on the barrier island. The contract with Circuit Transit is for $750,688 over a three-year term. Last year, Pompano Beach was awarded an $833,000 matching grant from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to help fund the transit service. Additional funding will come from advertising on the golf carts. Y

A New Publix Coming to Shoppers Haven A new Publix is planned for the anchor space at Shoppers Haven, the shopping center located at the southwest corner of North Federal Highway and Sample Road in Pompano Beach. Winn-Dixie formerly occupied the 52,000-square-foot space Commissioner Rhonda Eaton of District 2, where Shopper’s Haven is located, briefly mentioned the Publix during a recent Pompano Beach City Commission meeting. When asked about the project, Christopher Partridge of Partridge Equity Group, which owns and manages Shoppers Haven, said he is under a non-disclosure agreement and hopes to provide details in May. Plans submitted to the City show that Partridge Equity Group is proposing to redevelop the grocery store space as a Publix, as well as enhance the facades of the entire shopping center “to create a more modern and inviting appearance.” The owner is also proposing to update the existing parking areas to enhance circulation and accessibility. There is already a Publix in Venetian Isle Shopping Center on Federal Highway, which is almost directly across from Shoppers Haven, and another Publix in The Shoppes At Beacon Light, a few miles south of Shoppers Haven. A community relations manager for Publix Super Markets was asked if the two existing stores would remain open, and replied that “we do not have any information to

Pompano Beach Municipal Charter School Opening Will Be Delayed The City of Pompano Beach planned to open a municipal charter school for the 2021-2022 school year, but due to the impacts of COVID-19 and the planning required to establish the charter school, which would eventually serve grades K through 8, the City now plans to open the charter school for the 2023-2024 school year. Assistant City Manager Suzette Sibble said the deferral period will allow all stakeholders—the City, residents, businesses and the school district – time to “recover and normalize from the impacts of the pandemic.” The City will develop the protocols, policies and procedures required to establish and operate a compliant charter school. The Pompano Beach Municipal Charter School will be part of the Broward County public school system, but independently operated, with members of the City Commission serving as the governing board, rather than the School Board. In its first year of operation, the school would have grades K, 1, 2 and 6, and up to 380 students. Additional grade levels will be added progressively: grades 3 and 7 in the second year; grades 4 and 8 in the third year; and grade 5 in the fourth year. With grades K through 8 in place, the maximum estimated enrollment capacity would be 910 students. There will be no cost for students to attend the school. Like all other public schools in the school district, the Pompano Beach Municipal Charter School would receive its primary funding from the Florida Education Finance Program, which provides operating funds based on the number of full-time students enrolled.

In February 2020, the City of Pompano Beach submitted an application to the Broward County Public School District to open a municipal charter school, and in July 2020, the application was approved. The City statutorily has three years from application approval to open the school. It is anticipated that the Pompano Beach Municipal Charter School will start accepting applications for the 2023-2024 school year in late 2022 or early 2023. Sibble said the City would be working on a cohesive marketing outreach plan to ensure the public is aware of the opening of the enrollment period, as well as the process for submitting an application. The Pompano Beach Municipal Charter School will give enrollment priority to students who are residents of Pompano Beach. If not enough residents apply to attend, then seats would be open to children in Broward County. Should the number of applications received

exceed the number of seats available, enrollments will be based on a secure and monitored lottery system. The charter school will have a “rigorous curriculum,” with a high emphasis on reading at grade level by grade. The goal is for the school to achieve an “A” rating, which is the highest grade awarded by the state of Florida school ranking system. The new charter school will seek accreditation, and once it receives its first rating from the state’s ranking system, it will apply to become a Cambridge International School, which follows a highperformance curriculum. The City has not yet finalized a location for the charter school, or determined if a new building will be constructed or an existing building will be used, said Sibble. A charter contract with the school district for the Pompano Beach Municipal Charter School is expected to be brought to the City Commission for consideration by fall of 2022, said Sibble. Y

It Dawned On Me

April Showers AS I WRITE THIS, I FEEL AS THOUGH I AM LIVING THROUGH A MONSOON. AT THE RISK OF HYPERBOLE, PEOPLE WERE POSTING PICTURES ON SOCIAL MEDIA OF KAYAKING THROUGH PARKING LOTS. I called for delivery from a local restaurant: Me: "Hi, can I order pickup?" Answer: "No." [I thought he was kidding because this place is known for its sense of humor. I waited silently.] Finally, he responded: "The roads are too bad. Give us an hour." This place is four blocks away. I mean, they could have kayaked it here, and given the dreadful financial state of most restaurants right now, I was surprised. Undeterred, I offered to pick it up. While I didn’t need a kayak, the trip was dicey,

requiring several detours, turning the four-block trip into a 12-block odyssey of searching for the less flooded (note I didn’t say “dry”) streets. Longtime Floridians will recognize this as reality and not hyperbole, like the kind I might display if I suffered from histrionic personality disorder. Yes, that's a thing;

look it up. If I may digress (as always), WebMD defines the condition mentioned above as follows: “They have an overwhelming desire to be noticed, and often behave dramatically or inappropriately to get attention. The word histrionic means "dramatic or theatrical.’ This disorder is more common in women than in men and usually is evident by adolescence or early adulthood.” Cue the jokes. I know, I know. “More common in women than in men.” I’ll just leave that right there. Also, here’s my burning question: Is it appropriate to diagnose this condition in any teenager who has ever lived? To be clear, I'm not advising adults to ignore overly dramatic teenage behavior. If you believe there is a problem, please consult a therapist. Aaaand…once again, I've strayed far, far afield from the original topic, which is Florida rain. In my decades of experience living here, it seems we should have a multitude of words to describe rain, like the (myth? fact?) that certain cultures have 50 words for "snow" (which, I have learned, is sort of right. You can read more about that on Readable, here: https://readable.com/blog/doinuits-really-have-50-words-for-snow/). So, given that there are so many words to describe snow in places where it's necessary, let’s build a local vocabulary that includes many different ways to define rain. Here's my (not very creative) start: Sain — sunny and raining Main — Monsooning rain Wain — Windy and raining Faining — It's [insert unprintable word] raining again That said, I’m a huge fan of our soon-to-be-here summer showers, the ones that roll in around 3pm each day, watering the plants so I don't have to, and giving way to the sun breaking through a scant 15 minutes later. And this year, especially given the snowmageddons that have repeatedly trounced the rest of the country, I’ll take our rainy, steamy climate any day. Fauci: Vaccines for Kids as Young as First Graders Could Be Authorized by September For this to happen by the start of the next school year, trials need to prove the vaccine is safe and effective in children. Experts say manufacturers aren’t moving quickly enough, and that this is important for achieving herd immunity and stopping the spread of variants.

hildren as young as first graders may be able to get the coronavirus vaccine by the time school starts in September, presuming trials are successful in those age groups, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in an interview with ProPublica. “We’re in the process of starting clinical trials in what we call age de-escalation, where you do a clinical trial with people 16 to 12, then 12 to 9, then 9 to 6,” Fauci said. When asked what was the youngest age group that might be authorized for the vaccine by September, he said, “I would think by the time we get to school opening, we likely will be able to get people who come into the first grade.” As optimistic as Fauci is, several pediatricians and infectious disease experts said they wish the pediatric trials would move more quickly. In addition to restoring stability to the education system and parents’ work schedules and keeping kids and those

around them safe, vaccinating children is essential to helping the country, as a whole, reach herd immunity and decrease the threat of new variants. Otherwise, “we’re going to have tens of millions of individuals in our communities that are able to maintain the virus. And when that happens, what that allows is for these unusual variants to emerge that may have the ability to evade our immunity,” said Dr. Buddy Creech, associate professor of pediatrics and director of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Research Program. Despite the need, Pfizer is the only manufacturer whose pediatric vaccine trials are far enough along to potentially have data on elementary-school age children by the end of the summer. Pfizer has finished enrolling participants in its study of 12- to 15-year-olds and anticipates having data in “the early part of 2021,” according to a spokeswoman. “From there, we will plan to finalize our study in 5-11 year olds,” she added. As Pfizer completes its trials in adolescents, then 5- to 11-year-

olds, it’ll need to submit the data to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for review and get authorization for the vaccine’s use in those age groups before it’s available; currently in the U.S., the vaccine is indicated only for those ages 16 and up. Moderna is still enrolling participants in its trial for adolescents ages 12 to 18, and it is “on track to provide updated data around midyear 2021,” the company said in an emailed

statement. Stéphane Bancel, Moderna’s chief executive officer, has said that the company’s goal is to have data from the adolescent study in advance of the 2021 school year. Moderna said it’ll begin an age de-escalation study in children ages 11 years to 6 months this year,

but Bancel has said that the company doesn’t expect clinical data until 2022. Johnson and Johnson hasn’t started any pediatric studies yet. “We are in discussions with regulators and partners regarding the inclusion of pediatric populations in our development plan,” a spokesman said. Novavax, similarly, hasn’t begun any trials in children, and a company spokeswoman said it couldn’t share any details at this time. The University of Oxford, which partnered with AstraZeneca in developing a vaccine, will begin tests in 12- to 18-year-olds next month, according to Bloomberg News. The American Academy of Pediatrics has been “really advocating to try and make these trials happen with the same urgency that they happen for adults,” said Dr. Sean O’Leary, who is vice chair of its committee on infectious diseases. The manufacturers will need to prove vaccines are safe and effective in younger bodies. The adult trials paved much of the way, but researchers still need to study how kids’ immune systems react and to confirm the optimal dosage. And even if the shots are authorized by September, there will need to be enough supply on hand in order to get school children immunized before school doors open. It’s essential to act expeditiously, O’Leary said. “I would love to see a vaccine available for all children in time for the next school year.”

APRIL 2021 • pointpubs.com

“Our current chaos about children not being in schools is just terrible for children, and I think a lot of the concern would be assuaged if children were immunized. That doesn’t mean to me that they can’t get the infection or transmit it every once in a while, but it would reduce those possibilities tremendously. Dr. Sarah Long, professor of pediatrics at the Drexel University College of Medicine.

Why It’s Important to Vaccinate Kids Against COVID-19

Early on in the pandemic, some thought that children might be entirely immune. That’s clearly been disproven. Out of more than 20 million U.S. cases where age information is available, about 2.2 million, or 11%, have been in children under 18. Some get very ill, though this is rare. As of Feb. 8, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has tracked more than 2,000 cases of what’s known as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), a serious condition associated with COVID-19 that

can result in cardiac dysfunction and kidney injury; 37% of the cases recorded were in Latino children and 32% in Black children. It’s also become evident that children are capable of transmitting the virus to some extent. On one hand, kids aren’t superspreaders: COVID-19 is clearly dissimilar to influenza or the

common cold virus, Vanderbilt’s Creech pointed out. “You put one of those in a classroom, then in a few days, it’s overrun,” he said. “That’s not what we see with COVID.” But exactly how infectious children are remains somewhat unclear, in part because schools have not been fully open, making it hard to gather data, said Dr. Yvonne Maldonado, a pediatrician and professor of global health and infectious diseases at Stanford University. Studies from other countries, while informative, may not always extrapolate well to the U.S., she added. So while the “preponderance of data” points to children being less likely to infect people when compared with adults, “they certainly do,” said O’Leary, who is also a professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. “So, if you’ve got vulnerable people in the household and your 7-year-old comes home with COVID, it’s not to say they can’t give it to anybody else. They absolutely can. It’s just a bit less likely.” It’s important to note that the vaccines have only been proven — so far — to prevent disease and not infection (data on that is harder to gather and takes longer to prove), which means it’s not guaranteed yet that vaccinated individuals can’t spread the coronavirus. But there are some inklings of hope that vaccination can at least reduce onward transmission. So if this bears out, the more people who are vaccinated in a community, including children, the more likely transmission will drop overall. “Our current chaos about children not being in schools is just terrible for children, and I think a lot of the concern would be assuaged if

children were immunized,” said Dr. Sarah Long, professor of pediatrics at the Drexel University College of Medicine. “That doesn’t mean to me that they can’t get the infection or transmit it every once in a while, but it would reduce those possibilities tremendously.” Long is also a member of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, where she has been reviewing the trial data and helping to make recommendations on how the vaccines should be used. She continued: “There are real virus control reasons, there are real societal reasons and there are economic reasons, because if children can’t go to school, people can’t work.” O’Leary said children as young as 6 months, which is the youngest age that Moderna plans to test, can get vaccinated so long as trial data shows the vaccines to be safe and effective. Infants under 6 months are likely to be protected by antibodies transferred through the placenta if the pregnant mother is vaccinated, he added.

How the Vaccine Will Be Studied in Kids

The pediatric vaccine trials will not be as large as the final stage adult trials, which enrolled 30,000 or more participants, giving a placebo to half and the vaccine to half. Pfizer’s 12- to 15-year-old study has enrolled 2,259 participants and Moderna’s adolescent trial is a similar size, aiming for about 3,000 participants. In both trials, some teens will receive a placebo.

That’s enough to prove safety and benefit, experts said, in part, because the adult trials have already paved the way. To show the vaccine is safe, among the many things that Pfizer is tracking includes the percentage of participants reporting “local” reactions such as pain at the injection site, redness and swelling, as well as the percentage of participants reporting systemic reactions such as fever, headache, chills, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain and joint pain. After the trials are completed, tracking for any safety issues will continue in the real world as physicians and patients will be encouraged to report to the FDA and CDC any side effects they think may be due to the vaccine. Doctors said they’d want to make sure that there are no signs that the vaccine overinflames the immune system or causes any allergic or autoimmune responses. “I think most people that are developing these vaccines feel like the vaccine is not going to trigger MIS-C, but it’s something that will be monitored for very closely both in the trials and more importantly, post-licensure,” added O’Leary, from the University of Colorado. Maldonado said she’ll also be on the lookout for any cases of GuillainBarré syndrome, which is often a concern when it comes to vaccines, but she noted that no significant increases in cases were seen in any of the adult trials. When it comes to proving benefit, the pediatric trials will focus on a different metric than the APRIL 2021 • pointpubs.com

As we go down in age, we give the smallest possible dose of vaccine that we think is reasonable, and then we steadily increase until that point when we get that magic ‘Goldilocks’ level at which it works great and the side effects are tolerable. adult trials. The adult trials’ primary efficacy measure was to compare how many vaccinated people wound up sick with COVID-19 symptoms compared with those who received the placebo and whether the vaccine impacted the severity of illness. Since children rarely are hospitalized due to COVID-19, the vaccine’s ability to reduce severe cases would be hard to measure unless the trials enrolled an enormous number of children. Instead, Pfizer’s and Moderna’s adolescent trials will focus on evaluating participants’ immune response by measuring antibodies, according to Pfizer’s spokeswoman and Moderna’s clinical trial website. Scientists haven’t yet identified an “immune correlate of protection,” which is usually defined to be the level of antibodies in the blood at which they can feel confident that a person is going to be protected from infection. Some vaccines that have been approved, like the one for measles, have an immune correlate of protection identified, while others don’t. In the absence of a definitive immune correlate of protection, the trials would compare antibody levels in children with those found in adults and extrapolate that the efficacy should then be similar. The FDA and advisory groups like the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices would then need to discuss whether the evidence is compelling. If scientists are able to identify an immune correlate of protection, however, “and you can demonstrate that kids get that with the vaccine, that’s even more satisfying,” O’Leary said. One final difference in pediatric studies is the potential for lower doses. Moderna has said that it will run its studies of children under 12 testing lower doses first. “As we go down in age, we give the smallest possible dose of vaccine that we think is reasonable, and then we steadily increase until

that point when we get that magic ‘Goldilocks’ level at which it works great and the side effects are tolerable,” Vanderbilt’s Creech explained. “I don’t think one dose fits all.”

A Call to Speed Pediatric Trials

Some pediatricians and infectious disease experts said they were eager for pediatric studies to move faster. “My understanding is that the entity formerly known as Operation Warp Speed had a lot of involvement with those adult trials, but with pediatric clinical trials, they’re not having the same degree of involvement,” O’Leary said. “So it’s more up to the manufacturers, and from my perspective, these manufacturers don’t have the financial incentive to conduct these trials with the same urgency that they did with the adult trials.” Stanford’s Maldonado added that she’s concerned that there’s not as much pressure on the manufacturers to recruit children of diverse backgrounds as there was for the adult trials.“I think it’s important to get those kids in to understand factors around the actual vaccine and also to get buy-in of those communities where we’re seeing more hesitancy. We want to make sure they are feeling comfortable about being represented,” she said. While O’Leary is not as confident as Fauci that we’ll see Pfizer’s data on younger kids by September, he feels very optimistic about the availability of a vaccine in the coming months for kids as young as 12, who tend to get sicker than the younger age group. “I think that’s a really big deal,” he said. SATURDAY MORNING AT THE POMPANO GREEN MARKET IS A GREAT WAY TO GET OUT OF THE HOUSE AND ENJOY A FEW HEALTHY (AND NOT-SO-HEALTHY) TREATS. Many of us won’t think twice about springing for a $4.50 cappuccino or an extravagant bottle of wine, but when the price of blackberries goes up, we often think, “oh no, I shouldn’t spend $4.99 on a tiny box of blackberries.” Where is the logic in this? We all know we need to eat our fresh fruits and veggies. Shopping for them outside on a glorious Saturday morning is useful and perhaps even a therapeutic way to start the weekend. The fresh air, the legendary cerulean blue Florida sky, the sense of community along with a hot cup of coffee all come together for a perfect Saturday morning.
