Bye Bye Bobby Rubino’s THE LONG TIME POMPANO BEACH BARBECUE RESTAURANT TO BE REPLACED BY RAISING CANE’S CHICKEN FINGERS Plans are underway to replace the Bobby Rubino's in Pompano Beach — known as "the place for ribs" — with Raising Cane's, a restaurant specializing in chicken fingers. The Bobby Rubino's at 2501 N. Federal Highway in Pompano is the last remaining franchise in the restaurant chain founded by Robert "Bobby" Rubino. The original location opened in Fort Lauderdale in 1978, and the Pompano Beach location opened soon after. The Raising Cane's fast-food restaurant chain, founded in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1996, has nearly 700 locations across the country, and about two dozen locations in the Middle East. According to a company spokesperson, there are currently no Raising Cane's in Florida. A Raising Cane's restaurant planned for the Miami Beach area is scheduled to open sometime next year. The Raising Cane's in Pompano would be the chain's first location to open in Broward County. The approximately 10,000-squarefoot Bobby Rubino's would be demolished to make way for a 3,267-square-foot Raising Cane's

restaurant. Raising Cane's plans to have 52 indoor seats and 52 seats on an outdoor patio along the east side of the building, facing Federal Highway. The proposed restaurant would have double drive-thru lanes, plus a third drive-thru lane dedicated to customers picking up online orders. According to the site plan, the payment and pick-up windows will be on the west side of the building. An application for a proposed rightin turn lane on Federal Highway has been submitted to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to facilitate vehicular access to the restaurant. Broward-based Rozap, Inc. has owned the 2-acre Bobby Rubino's site since 1979. Over the years, the restaurant has retained its "old school" ambiance.

ABOVE Bobby Rubino’s on Federal Highway in Pompano Beach

As per the plans, all overhead utility lines will be relocated underground. An existing telecommunication tower and an existing billboard on the property are to remain. To earn the required sustainable development points for the project, a rain garden located at the center of the site is being proposed, instead of overhangs on all windows on the building's south façade. The project plans for Raising Cane's in Pompano are expected to be reviewed by the Pompano Beach Architectural Appearance Committee in August or September. Because the project involves a minor site plan, not a major site plan, it does not need to go to the Pompano Beach Planning and Zoning Board for approval. Y

Former Old Town Laundromat to Become Restaurant with Rooftop Seating The Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) has plans to transform a former laundromat in Old Town into a restaurant space with an indoor/ outdoor bar and a rooftop seating area. The space has been dubbed the “Wash House.” The CRA Board, at its meeting on June 15, authorized the expenditure of $350,000 for exterior and interior improvements to the property, located at 11 NE First St. The CRA purchased the structure in September 2019 for $1.2 million, after leasing it for five years. The property is an anchor site that is pivotal to the redevelopment of Old Town as an arts and entertainment district, according to CRA Project Manager Kimberly Vazquez. The CRA demolished the approximately 6,100-square-foot interior space down to dirt floors to make it easier to install new utilities and attract a restaurant. The property, which has been vacant for roughly seven years, was subleased by the CRA to a restaurant operator who subsequently requested the sublease be terminated. Since that time, the space has been shown to potential tenants who

have expressed interest but were dissuaded by the cost to renovate it, Vazquez told the CRA Board. In its current condition, with stucco and paint peeling off, the property is creating blight to the block, said Vazquez. With a vision in mind, the CRA hired DK Architects to provide conceptual designs and a budget for improvements to the building. The improvements will take place in two phases. The first phase will involve the exterior of the building, including opening the corner and west side of the building and creating the indoor/outdoor bar

rendering of the rooftop seating at the Wash House

area, new entrances on the west and south side, roll-down windows, exterior finishing work and pilings for an elevator. The second phase will include making the roof more structurally sound for the rooftop seating area, and adding infrastructure for stairwells. The second phase will be in the fiscal year 2022 budget, as it will require additional funding, said Vazquez. The goal of investing CRA funds in the property and providing the infrastructure is to attract a successful operator to the location, and to reduce some of the risk for the operator, said Vazquez. Mayor Rex Hardin noted that because other restaurants will be opening in Old Town — South Bar & Kitchen and Papamigos — “you don’t want to have an eyesore there.” The Northwest CRA Advisory Committee reviewed the proposed improvements and budget for the project at its Jun. 7 meeting, and unanimously approved moving forward. “It’s very exciting and something we need to do,” said CRA Director Nguyen Tran. “It’s creating a destination in Old Town.” Y

Pompano Relaunches Search for Master Developer of New $1 Billion Downtown The City of Pompano Beach and the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) are relaunching their search for a master developer for a roughly $1 billion project that will create a “dense urban downtown” including an area designated as the “Innovation District.” The area to be redeveloped straddles the four quadrants of the Atlantic Boulevard and Dixie Highway intersection. A solicitation for a qualified master developer was initiated in May 2019, and one firm, E2L Real Estate Solutions, LLC remained in the selection process, but the solicitation was officially canceled in June. In April 2020, a review committee voted 11 to 4 in favor of moving a proposal submitted by E2L to the next step of the selection process, which was to be a full presentation given by E2L to the City Commission

meetings, so the public could be present and fully participate. The City Commission and CRA Board began holding in-person meetings again in June, but now that the solicitation has been canceled, E2L’s presentation will not occur. According to CRA Director Nguyen Tran, a solicitation for a master developer of the new downtown and Innovation District is expected to be

“Perhaps now, with this renewed interest, we might get more responses to the solicitation. You really want more responses and different visions from various developers.” — CRA Director Nguyen Tran and the CRA Board, which are the same governing body. Because of the importance and magnitude of the project, the presentation was to take place when COVID-19 subsided and the City could resume holding in-person

reissued in late summer or early fall of this year. “We thought it would have slowed down after COVID, but it’s actually picked up,” said Tran. “We’ve had a lot of people start asking about development opportunities. There’s

more interest in what we’re doing and the lands that we have.” Tran said that to capitalize on those conditions, “it was time to cancel the solicitation, make it more current and put it back out.” Tran noted that one of the community’s biggest concerns was that E2L was the only firm that submitted a proposal in response to the original solicitation. There was worry about the process not being competitive enough and not making a good decision because there were no other proposals for comparison. “Perhaps now, with this renewed interest, we might get more responses to the solicitation,” said Tran. “You really want more responses and different visions from various developers.” Tran said the proposals that come in might look different in terms of the amount of office use and commercial use as a result of COVID-19.

We are in this Together The area to be developed has development entitlements for 3,368 residential units, 2,835,555 square feet of office space, 4,051,220 square feet of commercial space (retail and restaurants), and 420 hotel rooms. The plans include building a new city hall and ancillary government offices in the Innovation District or downtown core. The Innovation District — which is bordered by I-95, Dixie Highway, MLK Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard — would be the area with the most intense development. The City and CRA own about 30 acres of prime real estate within the 70-acre Innovation District. The Innovation District, and the downtown as a whole, lie within the Northwest CRA district. The project envisions a new system of self-contained, linear waterways, which would create a scenic setting and also serve as a drainage system. The entire project is anticipated to be designed and developed over the next two decades. E2L, based in Winter Park, was one of three firms short-listed in the first phase of the original solicitation. Prospective applicants were invited to submit letters of interest demonstrating their experience in projects of similar scope and their financial capability to undertake the project. The City received eight responses. In the second phase, the short-listed firms were invited to provide their proposals for executing the master development of the downtown and Innovation District. Only E2L went on to submit a proposal. The other two firms ultimately decided not to participate. E2L is the same firm that was selected by the City last year to be the master developer of the Oceanside surface parking lot, located at 109 N. Ocean Blvd. The City is in the process of negotiating a development agreement with E2L for that project, which includes a parking garage, hotel, conference/event center, club deck and a small grocer. E2L has also been carrying out the redevelopment of downtown Boynton Beach, with a massive mixed-use project called Town Square. E2L would be able to submit a proposal when the solicitation for the Pompano Beach downtown and Innovation District project is reissued, said Tran. “We hope they do,” said Tran. “It’s an opportunity for them to update their proposal based on the current real estate environment.” Y

Old Library Property Will Become a Mixed-Use Development At its Jun. 8 meeting, the Pompano Beach City Commission voted unanimously to accept a bid for $750,000 from 7th Avenue Properties, LLC to purchase the old Pompano Beach Library site located at 1207 E. Atlantic Blvd. The City issued an invitation for bids this February for the sale of the property and received two responses. The other bid was for $1 million from Tim Hernandez and Todd Jensen, principals of Pompano Library Partners, LLC. Hernandez is also a principal of Pompano Pier Associates, the developer of the Pompano Beach Fishing Village. 7th Avenue Properties plans to build a 4-story mixed-use project that consists of 5,580 square feet of ground-floor retail space, 48 residential units and 83 parking spaces. The residential units consist of 17 studios, 20 one-bedroom units and 11 two-bedroom units. The third floor would have an amenity deck with a pool. Parking is a mix of on-street parking and a parking garage. Because of zoning regulations, the north portion of the third and fourth floors that face single-family homes won’t be as tall as the portion that faces Atlantic Boulevard. The estimated cost to develop the project is $18 million. Some of the elements of the building configuration and design, as well as parking, will need to be revised for site plan approval, Cassandra LeMasurier, the City’s real property manager, told the City Commission. The bid from Pompano Library Partners proposed a 4-story mixeduse project with 2,210 square feet of ground-floor retail space and 54 residential units, consisting of 29

one-bedroom units and 25 twobedroom units. The proposed 93 parking spaces were a mix of on-street parking, a parking garage, surface parking and 28 satellite parking spaces to be located on the City’s property at 100 NE 13th Ave., which was the parking lot of the former library. The satellite parking would have been through a lease negotiated with the City as allowed for in the bid specifications. The developer proposed a lease payment of $1 per year for the 13,986-square-foot Cityowned parcel. The proposal submitted by Pompano Library Partners included six exceptions to the purchase contract section of the bid specifications. Those exceptions included a request for a 12-month period to obtain development approvals prior to closing, and closing beyond the 90-day purchase contract effective date. In addition,

the developer proposed that the City, as seller, pay for the title insurance, documentary stamps on the purchase price, and the developer’s legal fees. The bid specifications did not allow for any contingencies, said LeMasurier. “At the conclusion of the requested 12-month period to obtain the required approvals, there is no certainty that the project would be developed,” said LeMasurier. Granting any of the requested exceptions would “materially change the bid specifications” and provide Pompano Library Partners with an “unfair advantage” over 7th Avenue Properties, who submitted no exceptions to the bid specifications, explained LeMasurier. Mayor Rex Hardin added that the Commission couldn’t accept the bid from Pompano Library Partners because “it just doesn’t meet the specs.” Y

Atlantic Boulevard And Dixie Highway Intersection To Undergo Major Makeover PILOT PROGRAM FOR NEW TRAFFIC PATTERN WILL START SOON The intersection of Atlantic Boulevard and Dixie Highway is getting ready to undergo a major transformation as part of the City’s plan to create a new pedestrian-friendly urban downtown, which includes the future Innovation District. According to city officials, the intersection will have a new design that realigns Atlantic Boulevard, which will smooth traffic and enhance pedestrian safety, while creating a signature entrance to the heart of the city. The intersection is one of the most well-traveled intersections in Broward County. A traffic study conducted in 2016 by Traf Tech Engineering on behalf of the City showed that traffic volume on Atlantic Boulevard just west of Dixie Highway was 64,300 vehicles per day, and the segment immediately east of Dixie Highway processed approximately 53,500 vehicles per day. The traffic volume along Dixie Highway was approximately 26,300 vehicles per day south of Atlantic Boulevard and 30,800 vehicles per day north of Atlantic Boulevard. “Right now, we’ve got massive amounts of asphalt out there and it’s pretty scary for folks to try and cross Atlantic Boulevard or Dixie Highway,” said Pompano Beach Mayor Rex Hardin. “This project will make that less intimidating.” The goal is to enhance connectivity between the four quadrants of the intersection — the Innovation District, Old Town (Pompano’s historic downtown area), the Civic Commons (where City Hall and the Pompano Beach Cultural Center and Library are located), and the Avondale neighborhood. The design changes

in these areas are intended to slow down traffic and incentivize walking, rather than allowing drivers to speed through. “Making the intersection smaller to allow pedestrian activity has always been part of the plan to realize the potential of those areas,” said Hardin. The project to revamp the intersection will add amenities such as wider sidewalks and medians, safer crosswalks and new landscaping, which will require lane reductions and traffic pattern changes. The project — which the City has branded a “Progress in Pompano! Project” — is expected to start construction sometime between November 2021 and March 2022, according to Horacio Danovich, the city’s G.O. Bond and Innovation District director. Next month, to educate the public and get motorists accustomed to the new traffic patterns, the contractor will install delineator posts to establish the new travel lanes and transitions. Striping will also be added, if necessary, and an adjustment to the timing of traffic signals is planned. This “pilot program” will be in place for approximately three months. Ahead of the pilot program, message boards will be placed notifying drivers of the new traffic patterns. After the pilot program is completed, the actual project construction will start and last approximately one year. “The pilot program is a great step to allow the community to experience what’s going to happen and have a better idea of what this is really going to do to the traffic flow” said Hardin. “I

think it will alleviate some of the fear.”

WHAT AMENITIES WILL THE INTERSECTION INCLUDE? The final design plans are still in progress, but currently the redesigned intersection features a multi-use pedestrian and bike promenade with an average width of 8 to 15.5 feet along the north and south sides of Atlantic Boulevard, from NW Sixth Avenue (west) to South Cypress Road (east), to include seating areas, as well as a minimum 5-foot-wide curbside lawn with street trees. A multi-use promenade with a is planned along the west side of Dixie Highway, from SW Second Street to NW 10th Street. Parallel to the promenade, a multi-use path would run along the west side of Dixie Highway, from Atlantic Boulevard to NW 10th Street, separated from the road with landscaping. A 6-foot-wide sidewalk along the east side of Dixie Highway is proposed from Atlantic Boulevard up to NW 10th Street. The medians will be widened to measure 10 to 14 feet and landscaped. The medians will also be extended to align with newly defined crosswalks for both pedestrians and cyclists, providing ‘safe refuges’ for negotiating the divided roadways. All existing bus stops and bus bays through the corridor will be maintained. HOW WILL THE TRAFFIC PATTERN BE AFFECTED? Heading west on Atlantic Boulevard, from NE Fourth Avenue to South Cypress Road, the three through

lanes will be reduced to two, with the existing far right lane becoming a “trap” right turn lane that requires motorists turn right onto NE Second Avenue. The two existing left turn lanes that turn south onto South Cypress Road will remain. Continuing west on Atlantic Boulevard, from South Cypress Road to NW Sixth Avenue, there will be two through lanes. West of NW Sixth Avenue, the three existing westbound lanes will remain. Heading east on Atlantic Boulevard, between NW Sixth Avenue and SW First Avenue, three existing eastbound lanes will remain; at South

BELOW Traffic pattern changes at the Atlantic Boulevard and Dixie Highway intersection in Pompano Beach

Cypress Road the right through lane will become a trap right turn lane, and two through lanes will continue eastbound, as exists today. Where the eastbound lanes on Atlantic Boulevard meet Dixie Highway, the eastbound lanes will be reconfigured as follows: the double left turn lanes that turn north onto Dixie Highway will be reduced to one left turn lane; the right turn lane that turns south onto Dixie Highway will be removed; and the far right through lane will double as a through lane and right turn lane. Dixie Highway will retain its two northbound and two southbound

travel lanes, but at the Atlantic Boulevard intersection, the double left-turn lanes in both directions will be reduced to one.

ADDRESSING RESIDENTS’ CONCERNS ABOUT TRAFFIC Some residents have expressed concern the project will worsen traffic on Atlantic Boulevard. “Some people think we’re going to narrow Atlantic Boulevard down to one lane, but we’re not,” said Hardin. “We’re actually just extending the twolane configuration of East Atlantic Boulevard a little further to the west.” Hardin noted that eastbound >>>

Atlantic Boulevard And Dixie Highway Intersection To Undergo Major Makeover <<< Atlantic Boulevard currently transitions from three lanes to two lanes just east of South Cypress Road, where the right-hand lane merges into the center lane, which creates a bottleneck. With the new traffic pattern, eastbound Atlantic Boulevard will transition from three lanes to two lanes just west of South Cypress Road, with no merging. “The flow of traffic going from the Dixie Highway intersection all the way east to the beach is going to be smoother after this project is completed,” said Hardin. In 2020, Traf Tech Engineering prepared an analysis for the Atlantic Boulevard and Dixie Highway intersection project. The results indicate that with the changes to the intersection travel times between I-95 and the Atlantic Ocean (eastbound or westbound) are projected to increase between one-half minute and three minutes during the peak hours, depending on the time of day. HOW WILL THE PROJECT BE FUNDED? The project to improve the Atlantic Boulevard and Dixie Highway corridor was made possible in 2016, after the City’s successful collaboration with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to acquire Dixie Highway in its entirety through Pompano Beach (McNab Road to Sample Road) and Atlantic Boulevard (NW Sixth Avenue to the beach, excluding the bridge). This acquisition was essential in order for the City to have the flexibility to add major beautification elements to the project. FDOT transferred almost $5 million in funding to the City, as this money had already been designated

for the resurfacing of Dixie Highway. The cost of the project is still being finalized, but the current estimate is roughly $23 million, according to Danovich. Money for the project will come from the FDOT transfer funds, the Broward County Penny for Transportation Surtax fund, the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and the city’s G.O. Bond. The makeover of the intersection is part of the G.O Bond project to upgrade the Dixie Highway corridor from McNab Road to Sample Road.

A CATALYST FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT “Changing the intersection to make it more pedestrian friendly is a critical component of the eventual buildout and economic development of our Innovation District and the old downtown,” said Hardin. The project, which is a joint initiative of the City and the Pompano Beach CRA, is seen as an important public investment that will be pivotal in attracting private sector

development to the Innovation District. Development of the Innovation District – a 70-acre area bordered by I-95, Dixie Highway, MLK Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard – is envisioned to include residential units, office space, retail, restaurants and hotel rooms. The Innovation District, and the downtown as a whole, lie within the Northwest CRA district. Hardin explained that the goal is for people to be able to come out of the Pompano Beach Cultural Center after seeing a play and walk across Atlantic Boulevard to Old Town to have dinner or drinks at a restaurant/bar there, or for people who will be living in the future apartment buildings in Old Town to be able to walk across Dixie Highway into the Innovation District or to the Ali Cultural Arts Center to go to a jazz concert. “That’s the future that we’re working towards here, is allowing all this kind of interactivity to take place, which really creates a lot of synergies, and it makes for a vibrant community,” said Hardin. Personal Development

Focus on Potential BY CRAIG HALEY

I STARTED TEACHING MARTIAL ARTS WHEN I WAS 15 YEARS OLD. WHEN I STARTED THAT JOB, I KNEW THAT THIS IS WHAT I WANTED TO DO FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. I LOVED THE ENERGY, the people, and all the life lessons I learned. My instructor always told his staff, "Don't focus on where a student starts; focus on what they can become with time and training." What he was saying was don't focus on all the challenges a student has. There may be many. They may be overweight, uncoordinated, terribly shy or fearful. Where they start is not important. What is important is what students can become with coaching, encouragement and training. When we focus on their potential, it shifts our mindset to seek strengths and positive qualities to build upon.

I remember a student who enrolled in about 2006, just a few years after opening Elite Force. His father brought him in to become more confident, athletic and stronger. He was about 12 or 13 years old and his first-class was rough! He was like a fish out of water. He had a hard time because he lacked coordination and confidence. His dad asked me point blank, "Do you think he will be able to do this?"

28 pointpubs.com •

POINT! PUBLISHING

I gave him the same advice my instructor gave me. Never focus on where they start; focus on what they can become. I assured his dad that it wasn't going to happen in a day — that it would happen day by day with a lot of training, encouragement, reminders and repetition. The best thing about this kid was he wanted to improve. He showed up to the dojo three days per week with a positive attitude. Little by little, we saw his skill level improve, his confidence inched up month by month, and he was having fun. Five years later, this young man earned his black belt and his parents were ecstatic. Their once shy son became a black belt champion with confidence that he could achieve any goal he set for himself. Years later, he is now a police officer with the Broward County Sherriff's office, he is married, and has two kids. It's easy to focus on people's shortcomings and negative qualities. However, when you focus on positive attributes, progress happens. Sensei James Hons is a full-time instructor at Elite Force Martial Arts. He is currently in training for his fourth-degree black belt, and in 2015 he became the US Open Grand Champion. It was his first time competing. When he started training with us, he was a shy, unconfident kid who would not look me in the eyes. He starred at the floor when talking to me. His dad was a very militant, hard-nosed person, and he wanted his son to introduce himself to others with confidence. I shared this philosophy with his dad, and now more than 13 years later, he could not be prouder of his son. Are you a parent? Employer? Boss? Leader? Coach? If so, you have the unique privilege to coach and influence people under you. You may have the next superstar in your organization. That person may not know it yet, but if you look closely enough, you will be able to see tons of untapped potential waiting to come out. I have always loved the book, "The Little Engine That Could." That book is not just a kids' book. It is a philosophy for life! Teach people to think like that, encourage them, praise progress, gently correct errors, and you will be amazed by the results! It Dawned on Me

Flying the Unfriendly Skies BY DAWNE RICHARDS

ALERT (OK, OLD LIKE ME) READERS WILL RECOGNIZE THE WORDPLAY OF THE TITLE OF THIS PIECE. ALERT READERS HAVE PROBABLY already detected that I will be discussing travel, specifically traveling by air. At this moment, I’m less than 48 hours away from departure. Except for a quick one-way flight last November, I haven't flown since — well, since I don’t even know when. Certainly, it’s been over a year. The November flight was uneventful and the most frequent flyers among us know that "uneventful" is the best possible outcome for any flight. At first, I was a little concerned. These flying germ tubes were bad enough when I regularly crisscrossed the country in service of Corporate America. After years of flying and hundreds of thousands of miles with nary a case of the sniffles, a colleague once told me that I was their hero, a sort of Superwoman of the Skies. I wasn’t a germophobe, but I was careful, and incredibly, virtually never got sick after any of these flights. I wasn't sure if that superpower would carry me through last November, and I didn't want to fly at all, but circumstances dictated that I board that plane. It wasn't just the Covid-19 restrictions and the general creepiness of flying among people who, in the best of times, are slightly less infectious than Typhoid Mary; it was also the relative luxury of not having had to fly for business in a couple of years. After all the grueling travel, I thought that I really couldn't care less if I never, ever, ever get back on a plane. I must admit, however, that when I walked down the jetway last fall, I felt almost jaunty. "Oh!" I thought. "Oh! I remember how this feels. It's still exciting to me that we can actually fly anywhere —

30 pointpubs.com •

what a miracle — and this is a quick, easy flight, and I even feel a little bit fancy." [Why I felt fancy, I have no idea. I certainly wasn't back in my halcyon days of strutting up to the counter when my name was called, which nearly always meant I'd be getting bumped up to First Class.] But again, I digress. What else is new? Anyway, back to that less-than-48-hours-away trip. It's a little farther this time, and it's round-trip, and…and…and…the news being what it is these days, it's clear that people's behavior has not improved, to put it mildly. To make matters worse, I get back and then 48 hours later, turn around for another round-trip flight, albeit to a slightly closer destination. I can’t take it! I can barely remember how to hold an in-real-life conversation with people I know, let alone how to behave in public. We really need some sort of “social behavior refresher” courses. As it stands right now, several airlines have either re-suspended alcohol service or delayed its restart, due to the boorish behavior of the flying public. I can’t wait. Y

Lobsta Pasta BY MRS. KOSSENFLOFFER

I grew up in the Northeast where part of the joy of summer was seasonal produce. And while I am now a proud Floridian, summer will forever mean corn on the cob and juicy red tomatoes. Corn chowder is a perfect way to use summer corn — the problem is, who wants soup during a Florida summer? So I flipped the script and used a few corn chowder ingredients for this summertime pasta. The whole dish gets topped with lobster and prosciutto because it’s fun to be fancy. >>>

Lobsta Pasta Serves 6

INGREDIENTS

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided 1/4 cup plus 2-4 tablespoons olive oil 4 lobster tails, meat removed, cut into 1-inch chunks Red pepper flakes to taste Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 4 ounces sliced prosciutto, torn 1 leek, white and light green part, chopped 5-8 cloves garlic, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons fresh thyme, chopped 4 ears of corn, kernels removed 1 pint grape or cherry tomatoes 1/2 cup dry white wine Juice from half a lemon 1 cup fresh herbs such as basil, parsley or chives, finely chopped 1 pound fettuccine or tagliatelle cooked according to package instructions

PREPARATION In a large saute pan oven over medium heat 1 tablespoon each of olive oil and butter. Add 1 clove of the garlic and a pinch of salt. Add the lobster tails and cook for about 3-4 minutes until the lobster is cooked through. Remove the lobster from the pan and set aside. Add the prosciutto and cook until crisp. Remove and set aside. Add more olive oil to the pan if needed and add the leeks and saute until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes, corn, garlic, thyme, and a pinch each of salt, pepper and red pepper flakes. Cook until the tomatoes begin to break down and split open, about 4-5 minutes. Add 2-3 tablespoons of butter to the pan and cook until the butter starts to brown just a little. Add the wine and lemon juice and simmer for 2-3 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and add the lobster back in. While the sauce cooks, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the pasta according to package directions, until al dente. Reserve a cup of the pasta cooking water, then drain the pasta and add it back to the hot pasta pot with 1/4 cup of olive oil and the fresh herbs. Season with salt and pepper and toss to combine. Add a little of the reserved pasta water if it seems too dry. Divide the pasta among the bowls and top with the lobster, corn and tomato mixture. Top each plate with the reserved prosciutto. Y

GOOD NEWS LOCAL FOLKS DO REMARKABLE THINGS

It is too easy to become inured in terrible news. Plagues, wildfires and turmoil fill the headlines. Yet, if you look, good things are happening all around — and they are happening in our own backyard; a mom trains first responders about autism, a local high school pitcher gets drafted by the Phillies, habitat for humanity launches a new program for youth, and an Eagle Scout honors the American Flag.

RIGHT Assistant Fire Chief Tony Long, Martin Hedelund, Fire Fighter Jessica Cruz, Dalton Hedelund, Margi Hedelund, Fire Fighters Ralph Giro, Nicholas Garito and Kyle Fleming at the Lighthouse Point Fire Station. The tote bags are hurricane kits supplied by The Autism Society of Florida. The firefighters can hand out the bags to children with autism who may need a distraction during hurricanes. The kits contain items like games, toys, coloring books and even head phones for chidren who are sensitive to sound.

TRAINING DAY ONE MOTHER’S MISSION TO TEACH FIRST RESPONDERS ABOUT PEOPLE WITH AUTISM As the mother of twin 14-year old boys who are both on the autism spectrum, Margi Hedelund exudes positive energy. Her determination to give her sons the best the world has to offer, and possibly more, is evident. I recently sat down with Hedelund and Lighthouse Point Assistant Fire Chief Tony Long at the fire station to talk about a training program organized by The Autism Society of Florida. As part of the program, Hedelund teaches first responders techniques to help them interact with people on the autism spectrum. Both her and Long are quick to tell me how valuable in-person training on this topic is. "What we found is that a lot of agencies were doing things like watching a video, so you'd get roll calls together, and they'd watch a video, and that was their training. Well, we in the autism community said you know what, that's not good enough." Hedelund brings her sons to the training sessions she leads. She recounts that often during the classes, her son "Dalton will be stimming and Martin will run around." At this point, Hedelund explains and demonstrates stimming to me. She raises her arm, swings her hand quickly in the air and describes how these physical behaviors, known as stimming in the autism community, are used by people on the autism spectrum to calm themselves. Variations of stimming are something she demonstrates in person during her sessions. One significant concern in the autism community is interactions

between first responders and people on the autism spectrum. Long mentions that while he watched many training videos on autism, having real-life training along with interaction with Margi's two sons is invaluable. He remembered how he had "watched that video for 30 years probably, and stimming is in there all the time" Yet, he admits he didn't fully comprehend stimming until he witnessed the behavior in person. Hedelund explains when law enforcement approaches a person with autism while stimming, an officer might misinterpret the behavior as aggressive. Yet, stimming is only one problem. Additionally, many people with autism are non-verbal, making communication difficult for first responders. "Our mission, especially for our first responders, is for their safety and the safety of our children and adults with autism. We teach them what it [stimming]

looks like. We give them strategies to communicate with people who are nonverbal, which a lot of our community is." Many people with autism communicate using American Sign Language, device boards and picture exchange communication. Hedelund shows me an app on her son's iPad called TouchChat he uses to communicate. His screen is filled with icons for common words, which he can simply touch to use the words he needs to communicate. She mentions that she will be working with the Lighthouse Point Fire Department to develop visual communication boards specifically tailored to phrases first responders might need in a rescue situation.

Typically, firefighters simply announce themselves to find people in a compromised building. But what happens when someone is non-verbal? How can the firefighters find them? The answer it turns out is fairly simple. Hedelund instructs the first responders to yell, "Can you bang on something? Can you clap your hands? Can you make a noise?" Noting the importance of in-person training, Long remembers, "I've seen that lesson on the video, and it never really struck home, but after this class, there is no way I will forget any of that." "When I hear Tony talking about what he remembers, that's everything to me. That will change someone's life someday," Hedelund notes. She goes on to say, "there are great trainers who make great videos, but it's nothing like having me up there." Additionally, when her trainees interact with her sons, Hedelund feels it an invaluable experience. She also advises parents of children with autism to be proactive and introduce themselves to the first responders in their community.

When I hear Tony talking about what he remembers, that’s everything to me. That will change someone’s life someday. — Margi Hedelund Toward the end of our conversation, Hedelund points out that people with autism have no physical characteristics, so it can be difficult for first-responders to recognize autism. At this point, we have been talking for about 45 minutes and her sons, who have been waiting patiently, start to engage in our conversation. It is obvious that Hedelund is so proud of her boys. She tells me that Martin received straight As at Lighthouse Christian School for all of the eighth grade. Hedelund also leads classes for general education students to learn about autism. She teaches the young students that having autism doesn't mean a person is not intelligent and that we are all different in some way. And then she asks the kids. "What would the world be like if we were all exactly the same? Wouldn't that be boring?" — Susan Rosser

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILDING FUTURES PILOT PROGRAM A new youth program developed by Habitat for Humanity of Broward's Rick Case Habitat Community and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County is getting underway. The program, called Building Futures is modeled after a similar program in Cleveland Ohio. The program's goals are to introduce students to career opportunities in a variety of trades, engage them in taking responsibility for their future and set them on a path for a successful and rewarding career. Through a unique approach, Habitat home building projects will be used to give selected 16 to 19-year-old students eight weeks of intensive hands-on experience with various skilled construction trades. In addition to providing new homes for families searching for affordable housing, this program will give these students a better understanding of the career opportunities available to them in the skilled trades and present them with the introductory skills needed to enter this field. By making these opportunities tangible, the program intends to show the students that their future is within their control and that a successful career, including homeownership, is available. A Rick Case Habitat Community, the largest affordable single-family housing project in Broward's history, will serve as the primary site location for this pilot program. Funding for this pilot program is provided by a generous, anonymous donor with ties to both Cleveland, Ohio and Broward County. AUGUST 2021 • pointpubs.com

SCOUT’S HONOR EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT PAYS HOMAGE TO U.S. FLAG

Lighthouse Point residents now have a place to drop off their used U.S. flags for appropriate disposal. A U.S. Flag Retirement Box was recently installed in front of City Hall as the Eagle Scout service project of Ryan Schramm, of Boy Scout Troop 238, based at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Lighthouse Point. Ryan, 15, said he chose the flag retirement box as his project because it honors veterans and everyone who has used the flag. In addition, while there are flag retirement boxes in other cities in the area, Lighthouse Point didn't have one. The box looks like a Postal Service mailbox, but is actually a box that Ryan's mother found in an online auction as part of a department store liquidation sale. The metal box was a grey color, so Ryan hired a Deerfield Beach artist to paint it.

40 pointpubs.com •

Ryan provided his ideas for the design and asked the artist to incorporate them. As the artist painted each section of the box, she would send Ryan photos of it, and he would confirm that it was how he wanted the box to look. The design on the box features a U.S. flag that wraps around one side and the Boy Scout logo on the other side. A few other boy scouts helped Ryan install the box at City Hall, which involved drilling holes in the cement tiles and bolting it down.

The main objective of the Eagle Scout project was for Ryan to learn the project management and leadership skills. The project also involved completing all the related paperwork, including a proposal, description, accounting and a summary. Ryan said the biggest thing he learned from the project is how to manage people so they work together as a team and get the project completed quickly. The total cost of the project was $660, which includes the box itself, the artist, materials and food for the workers. To finance the project, Ryan received donations and sold a number of items via a fundraising website he created, as well as on another website. Among the items sold were one of Ryan's older bikes, a fish tank and clothing. In the end, there was an accounting shortage of approximately $3.50, so Ryan's older brother donated it to the project. Every two weeks, Ryan collects the flags from the box, folds them, and either brings them on Boy Scout campouts for proper retirement or gives them to other Cub and Boy Scout troops for proper retirement. Proper flag etiquette requires the disposal of retired United States flags by fire in a respectful manner. At a scout campout, the flags are disposed of in a special ceremony around the fire. Ryan said he has gotten positive feedback from members of the community regarding the box. Ryan has been involved in scouting since he was 6 years old. He was a Tiger in the Cub Scouts and last month successfully passed his Board Of Review to become an Eagle Scout. An Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony for Ryan, as well as fellow troop members Ethan Cecil and Mason Kolb, is planned for this month. Eagle Scout is the highest rank achievable in scouting and is for a lifetime. — Marie Puleo

PLAY BALL The Philadelphia Phillies selected Calvary Christian School pitcher Andrew Painter in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft. Painter was the 13th pick overall, and he was also named the Gatorade player of the year for Florida. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high academic achievement, and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishing Painter as Florida's best high school baseball player. According to the Sun-Sentinel, Painter watched the draft at home with his family. He was quoted in the same article saying, "There's obviously going to be pressure with everything, but you kind of ignore it — kind of just go and do your thing. I've been in moments like this before on a high stage. So you just keep on working and really keep that same dedication, ignore all the outside stuff and go play your game." The 6-foot-7, 230-pound senior right-handed pitcher compiled a 6-1 record on the mound with a 0.31 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 45.1 innings this past season, leading the Eagles to a 19-5-1 record and a berth in the Class 3A regional quarterfinals. Painter held opposing hitters to a .119 batting average and struck out 54 percent of the total batters he faced. He has volunteered locally on behalf of the Humane Society of Broward County and United Community Options of South Florida in addition to helping to raise nearly $7,000 to benefit the OK Kids Korral in association with the Toby Keith Foundation. "Andrew Painter is one of the best high school baseball players in the country, yet he is humble, selfless and focused on others," said Calvary Christian Academy athletic director Keith Huisman. "He is entirely focused on being a good teammate and raising the level of play of those around him."

Chub Cay BY RICHARD ROSSER

POINT! PUBLISHING

If you fly a drone directly above Chub Cay in the Bahamas, you could point the camera to world-class marlin fishing on the west side of the island and amazing bonefishing on the east side. Directly below would be the state-of-art marina and the luxurious resort. The distance from the marina to the fishing grounds is almost nonexistent, but the diversity of fishing and marine activities is vast and mostly unspoiled. AUGUST 2021 • pointpubs.com

he main attraction on Chub Cay is the resort, and most visitors come by boat. There is a small airport with flights from Fort Lauderdale to jump the 150 miles of ocean in between. The 2010 census showed 46 people living on the island. From what I saw during a short trip pre-Covid, that number has not changed much. The island of Chub Cay is natural and almost entirely undeveloped, except the marina, resort and a small collection of bungalows for rent and few privately-owned houses. But the resort and marina are first-class all the way as the clientele that venture to Chub Cay appears to be quite serious about all things fishing and boating. Aside from the unpressured fishing grounds due to the cay's remote location, the island is also located at a strategic point where the ocean floor forms "the pocket." Like most pockets, it collects things — lots of

prized fish like marlin, wahoo, tuna and more. When wind conditions are right, baitfish are blown "down the pocket" directly to Chub Cay and the waiting fishermen at the marina. While on the dock, a crew from another boat passed by with a massive Cubera snapper which they said was caught "just over there" and pointed to a boat outside the marina, maybe a half-mile away. That night, a boat was maybe half that distance offshore from the house I was in. The following day we learned about the hefty mutton snappers that were caught during the night. I was a guest of Lighthouse Point resident Greg Edwards who owns a house there with his wife Debbie. I mention this because of a story that Greg told me about his father and trips to the Bahamas in the '70s as a boy. His father was a doctor, and his schedule allowed him to boat around the Bahamas for a month each summer, back when South Florida was very quiet

during that time of year. Dr. Edwards took his sons on these extended journeys, but food needed to be caught — every day and then, everybody was expected to share this burden. My point is that each summer, Greg and his father marauded around the islands seeking adventure — and food. And Greg bought a house on Chub Cay. I respect that level of knowledge about a fishing area. Or you could take of the word of others: "Chub Cay's location provided convenient access to the Bahamian waters known as "The Pocket," which are arguably the best fishing grounds in the entire Western Hemisphere, and, perhaps, the best for billfishing anywhere in the world. A Texas billionaire George Bishop seems to agree. The 83-year-old bought the resort in 2014 from an investment group lead by Kaye Pearson, widely known in Florida as owning the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show and other properties. Mr. Bishop has invested quite a bit in improving the property over the time since. Chub Cay is not only a destination for elite anglers and boaters. A 40-foot slip is $133 per night, and a "day pass" at the resort is around $80, which includes the pool and resort amenities. Rooms at the resort start at $250 per night during the summer. I searched for a 2-bedroom villa during the holiday break, which listed for under $900 per night and a 3-bedroom for about $1100 per night. Y AUGUST 2021 • pointpubs.com
