Happy Birthday to Me USE YOUR BIRTHDAY TO SEE THE BETTER PARTS OF HUMANITY

Last month, I committed to writing a year’s worth of columns on love in this space. At the time, it felt like a towering commitment. Yet, it is fitting my first essay on love should coincide with February and Valentine’s Day. My birthday also happens to be in February. So to kick off my love project, I will share why I love my birthday. In a nutshell, people are super friendly and kind to me on my birthday. So, some time ago, I figured, why not expand on that? For years and years, I never reminded anyone it was my birthday. Of course, my family and close friends remembered. But that’s it. So, birthday good wishes were restricted to a relatively limited group. I would swing into work and feel a twinge of disappointment when I was not blasted with birthday greetings. This lack of enthusiasm was not because I was some sort of miserable person with no friends; no one wished me a happy birthday simply because they did not know it was the anniversary of my birth. I can’t remember precisely when I changed course, but somewhere along the line, I rewrote my birthday playbook. Now I’ll tell anyone it’s my birthday — from the cashier at Publix to the receptionist at my dentist — anyone. Nearly everyone seems tickled to learn it’s my birthday, and naturally, they wish me well. Each interaction serves up a big slice of happiness which has far fewer calories than cake. At best, my evidence is anecdotal, but I assume most people don’t trot around town advertising their own birthdays. But aren’t we all entitled to one day out of 365 where we are indeed the center of attention, if not the universe? It is easy to sink into an abyss of negative thoughts and assume a zillion imbecilic people are out there just waiting to ruin your day. We read stories of atrocious behavior on airplanes and restaurants and consequently believe the world is full of sourpusses.

But on my birthday, each “happy birthday” uttered brightens my day and goes a long way towards rejuvenating my sense of community and faith in humanity. If you give people the chance to wish you well, they take it. And I enjoy my birthday so much that I have extended my celebration to the entire month. Thankfully I was born in February, so my indulgence is limited to 28 days. And truth be told, I don’t go around telling total strangers that I am in the midst of my birth month for an entire month. Generally speaking, I use my birth month to get my family to do things they might otherwise not be inclined to do. I am mainly talking about laundry and dishes here. I started this whole project of columns of love because I wanted to focus on positive things. Thanks in part to my awful habit of doom scrolling when I can’t sleep, I woke up today feeling pretty disheartened, but then I began work on this column and instantly felt more optimistic. Sometimes just thinking about love is all you need. Y

256-Unit Mixed-Use Development Is Planned Along Federal Highway In Pompano Beach

A new large-scale, mixed-use project, called Soleste Pompano, is being planned for a currently vacant 1.95 net-acre site at 208 N. Federal Highway, one block north of Atlantic Boulevard. According to plans submitted to the City by the developer, Estate Investments Group, LLC, the project consists of a modern 8-story building that includes 256 residential units, 4,000-5,000 square feet of street-facing retail/ commercial space, an interior parking garage, a ground-floor pool area, private terraces, a dog park and other amenities. The project site is a collection of eight contiguous parcels on the east side of Federal Highway, just north

of the old Kraeer Funeral Home, which presently sits vacant. The ground floor of Soleste Pompano would include eight oneand two-bedroom live/work units ranging from 590 to 800 square feet. The upper floors would have a mix of studios (460-480 square feet), onebedroom units (570-600 square feet), one-bedroom units with a den (700 square feet) and two-bedroom units (800-850 square feet). A total of 310 parking spaces are proposed, with a portion of the parking provided as tandem parking to be managed by a valet service. City of Pompano Beach to Replace Waste Management with New Garbage Collector Starting on October 1, 2022, the City of Pompano Beach will no longer use Waste Management as its residential and commercial garbage and recycling collector. The City is hiring Coastal Waste & Recycling, a Pompano Beach-based company, as its new solid waste hauler. The City Commission, at its Jan. 11 meeting, approved on second reading a contract with Coastal Waste & Recycling for an initial 5-year period, with an option to renew for an additional two 10year terms. The current contract with Waste Management expires September 30, 2022. The current rate charged by Waste Management for solid waste collection services for a single-family home is $20.37 per month. The monthly rate charged by Coastal Waste & Recycling for a single-family home will be $24.98. Last summer, the City issued a Request for Proposals for residential and commercial solid waste collection services, and received bids from five companies, including Waste Management and Coastal Waste & Recycling. Coastal Waste & Recycling submitted the lowest bid for residential service, with a proposed monthly single-family household rate of $29.89. The rate proposed by Waste Management was $32.94. Bids from other companies went as high as over $42 per month per household, according to Russell Ketchem, director of the city’s solid waste services. For multi-family residences, the bid from Coastal Waste & Recycling was $18.85 per unit and the bid from Waste Management was $23.90 per unit.

Ketchem told the Commission that for residential service, Waste Management’s bid was a total of $3.6 million higher than Coastal Waste & Recycling’s bid. Last October, the City Commission approved the ranking order of the firms that responded to the Request for Proposals and authorized City staff to negotiate a contract with the highest ranked firm, which was Coastal Waste & Recycling. Waste Management was the secondhighest ranked firm.

New Luxury Condo Project Is Planned for NE 14th Street A new luxury condominium project is planned for two adjacent lots on the south side of NE 14th Street, between Federal Highway and the Intracoastal Waterway. According to plans submitted to the City by the developer, Property Outlaws, LLC, the proposed project would be built on 0.41 acres of property at 2716 NE 14th Street and 1371 NE 27th Way, overlooking a canal. The project would consist of eight condo units in two buildings that are three stories each. The ground floor would include common areas such as offices for private use, a conference room, sauna, swimming pool and deck, BBQ area, firepit, breezeways and bathrooms. Pompano Beach Adopts a Mixed-Income Housing Policy to Deconcentrate Poverty The City of Pompano Beach has a new mixed-income housing policy that went into effect in December 2021, after being approved by the City Commission. The purpose of the policy is to encourage affordable housing as well as provide relief from the adverse impacts of the concentration of income-restricted housing within the city. According to a study conducted on behalf of the City by the Lambert Advisory Group, Pompano Beach has the second-highest number of income-restricted housing units in Broward County, behind Fort Lauderdale. Both cities far exceed any other municipality in the County, 10 of which don’t have any income-restricted development. Additionally, Pompano Beach has the third-highest proportionate share of income-restricted units to non-income-restricted units in the county. The City’s newly established mixed-income housing policy follows research and analysis that began in 2017, after the City hired the Lambert Advisory Group to evaluate the city’s market rate and affordable housing markets. A concern raised by the Lambert study was that a large proportion of low-income tax-credit housing units are being developed in census tracts where there is already a high concentration of existing rentrestricted or subsidized units. The Lambert study also found that a concentration of low-income families “has a very real impact on families and neighborhoods” and that policies which promote the production of rent-restricted affordable housing must do so in a

way that concurrently encourages deconcentration of that housing. The study identifies several long-term studies that have tracked low-income children who grew up in poor neighborhoods versus low-income children who grew up in middle-income neighborhoods and have “clearly found that, everything else being equal, a low-income child who grows up in a middle-income neighborhood will have significantly more earnings as an adult than if the same child was to grow up in a low-income neighborhood.” In January 2021, the City Commission adopted a temporary moratorium on income-restricted housing developments when they were within a half-mile of existing income-restricted housing developments, in order to allow the City sufficient time to review the City’s housing data and adopt appropriate policies and code amendments. Following the enactment of the moratorium, the City engaged the Lambert Advisory Group to update the 2017 study and assist staff with developing a policy and accompanying regulations to achieve deconcentration of incomerestricted housing. The updated study, completed in April 2021, found that since 2016, nearly 35 percent of the City’s new multifamily

housing is comprised of income-restricted development. Comparatively, in that timeframe, approximately 12% of new units added by the County were incomerestricted. Per the new mixed-income housing policy, the City will promote the deconcentration of poverty by prohibiting any City department or the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) from providing discretionary financial or non-financial support (utilities, drainage, parking, lighting, road improvements, streetscapes) for any development project that has less than 50% non-incomerestricted housing units and wants to locate within a half-mile radius of a development project that contains less than 50% non-incomerestricted housing units. This does not apply to any existing City or CRA commitments. The new policy will provide the framework for future code amendments, including additional standards for projects implementing Broward County’s policies; revisions to the City’s flex allocation requirements; and the creation of a Commercial Mixed-Use zoning district that will be applied to Dixie Highway, and certain other commercial corridors, requiring any new development to have commercial uses on the ground floor and residential housing that contains a minimum of 80% nonincome-restricted units. In addition to density bonuses provided by the County, the City and CRA may provide economic incentives to housing development projects that provide 80% nonincome-restricted housing units Y

My Love/Hate Relationship with Social Media BY DAWNE RICHARDS

IN THIS “MONTH OF LOVE” (CUE VOMIT EMOJI), I THOUGHT ABOUT THE UNIVERSAL LOVE/HATE RELATIONSHIP WITH SOCIAL MEDIA. (SEE? WE CAN ALL AGREE ON SOMETHING!) While I love few people and like even fewer, animals are a different story. My dog loves me more than I love her. Yes, I said it. And I love my cats more than they love me. Just kidding; they hate me; actually, they tolerate me because I am The Source of All Things Good, including food, treats, catnip, and toys. It’s clear to me that were I to withhold any of these; they’d murder me in my sleep. Shockingly, I’ve digressed. Again. Anyway, I’ve been pondering how much I love social media and also how much I hate social media. Here is what I love:

Kidding — mostly. I love reconnecting with old friends from my younger days. The ability to communicate with people near and far asynchronously and quickly is magical. I have reconnected with my college roommate, who has been living in Israel for decades. We are tentatively planning to meet somewhere later this year or next. And by “somewhere,” I mean “somewhere incredibly cool,” like Paris. Or Israel. Or Greece! Woah. This adventure would never have happened without Facebook. On the other hand — Oy. It occurs to me that social media has given us all the opportunity to do two things: • Relive our childhoods. • Bring out our inner child. These sound lovely until you remember that many of us were brats (myself included). Not only that, but children can be brutally honest. Recently, I was encouraging my eight-year-old granddaughter to read; she is behind in reading and self-conscious about it. She asked me to finish reading a story, declaring, “But you read so much faster, and I’ll never be able to read like that,” and broke

into sobs. “Oh, honey,” I said, “Yes, you will! First, I have had years and years of practice, and second of all, we’re all good at different things. Like me: there are things I’m not good at.” She looked at me for a moment and asked, “Like singing?” Yes, you little twerp. Like singing. Then there is the churlishness of our inner teen (if you are thinking, “Not me! I was a wonderful teenager!” you’re lying). Every Friday, I treat the grandkids to Jack’s Hamburgers. We have a fun dinner and lots of laughs. On other days, when I am on grandma duty (GD), I order pizza. Recently, while on GD, I asked the 15-year-old what she wanted for dinner. “Not Jack’s, and not pizza,” she replied. Excuse me??? First, what kind of teenager doesn’t like hamburgers or pizza? Second, let’s discuss gift horses and mouths, or beggars and choosers, or…or…. Anyway, it is this kind of entitled behavior that we all (even me, the perfect Social Media Angel) exhibit online from time to time. So, let’s try to put our inner children back where they belong… and try to up our love quotient in the Social Media Love/Hate Ratio (trademark application filed).Y

Always Make Adjustments BY CRAIG HALEY 2022 REPRESENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO BOUNCE BACK FROM THE PREVIOUS TWO YEARS FILLED WITH OBSTACLES, CHALLENGES, AND UNFORESEEN EVENTS. EVERYONE WANTS THIS YEAR TO BE THEIR BEST YEAR SO FAR. Certainly, step one is to have clear goals and intentions. After that, you must take action to make those goals come to fruition. But what about what happens when your plan does not work out 100% of the time? Do you throw in the towel and give up? Of course not!

The next step is to evaluate your habits and routines to see if they are helping you or hurting you. It’s time to wake up and realize that some habits you indulge could be compounding your life into a repeated disaster. The slightest adjustments to your daily routines can dramatically alter the outcomes in your life. Again, I’m not talking about quantum leaps of change or a complete overhaul of your personality, character and life. We are talking about super small, seemingly inconsequential adjustments that can and will revolutionize everything. The best illustration I can give to emphasize the power of minor

adjustments is that of a plane traveling from Los Angeles to New York City. If the plane’s nose is pointed only one percent off course — almost an invisible adjustment when the plane is sitting on the tarmac in Los Angeles— it will ultimately end up about 150 miles off course, arriving either in Albany, New York or in Dover, Delaware. Such is the case for your habits. A single poor habit, which doesn’t look like much at the moment, can ultimately lead you miles off course from the direction of your goals and the life you desire. Take a few minutes and review all your habits. Are some habits not causing you any challenges now, but they could be down the road? Eliminating or changing certain habits can be tricky. One option could be to replace the habit with a better one. For example, swap out soda for sparkling water. Another option would be to avoid the temptation altogether. If you want to eat better, get all the junk food out of the house, so it will not tempt you. If you do not want to drink alcohol, don’t keep it in the house at all. When the bad habit is easily accessible, your willpower will be tested. Don’t put yourself in that position! View your partner as having good character traits. Otherwise, this is not the person for you. Strive to have more positive interactions. Research shows that even couples who experience adverse events can overcome these with more positive interactions to outweigh the negative. PROBLEM SOLVING, REPAIR AND GROWTH: A couple who identifies problems, and devises a problem-solving strategy has a greater chance of longevity and happiness. Letting issues sit and fester allows resentment to build, which is hard to get past as time goes on. WILLINGNESS TO WORK: The most successful relationship partners recognize a relationship is dynamic and takes work. Different life stages, children, extended family, careers and finances alter the dynamic of a relationship. Meeting your partner’s needs is very important, and needs change over time. It is imperative to discuss needs regularly. Openness to work on personal growth and growth as a couple is a significant protective factor in a relationship. This process builds trust. “My Mom, Your Dad” follows a group of single parents who their college-age kids have nominated for a second chance at love. The parents move into a house together, unaware that their adult children are right down the street living in a second house, watching their every move through hidden cameras and manipulating their encounters. From humorous cringe moments to heartwarming confessions, the kids will see their parents in a whole new light as they are presented with opportunities to select who they’ll be matched with on one-on-one dates, and who may join the family Thanksgiving for years to come. One of the duos featured on “My Mom, Your Dad” is Karen and her daughter Breana from Pompano Beach. Richard Rosser spoke to them about their time on the show. RICHARD ROSSER: I know you’ve given many interviews but I’m the local guy, so I’m also interested in the hometown angle. What is your background in the local area? KAREN: I moved to Pompano Beach in 1998. I grew up out west in Cooper City and Miramar. And when I got married, I reluctantly moved to Pompano Beach — I was not an East Side girl. Now, you cannot take me away because I will kick, scream and drag my feet. I love Pompano Beach. It is the little town that could. The city has boomed since I’ve lived here, and I’m so proud of this city and would never move away. And Breana was born at Holy Cross Hospital, and she’s lived here all her life. BREANA: Yes, it was fantastic living here. I loved

growing up in year-round warm weather. I love the heat. I love going to the beach. That’s what I did almost every weekend growing up. RICHARD ROSSER: Breana, where did you go to school? BREANA: I attended Saint Coleman’s Catholic school for elementary and middle school. And then, I attended Cardinal Gibbons High School. RICHARD ROSSER: So what did you do as a younger person around town? BREANA: I was on my high school cheerleading team for my sophomore and junior years. But then I hurt my back, and I couldn’t cheer my senior year, so I got a job at Surf World. RICHARD ROSSER: How did you learn about this show, FEBRUARY 2022 • pointpubs.com

Breana, because you learned about it and you nominated your mother? BREANA: Yes, so I nominated my mother. I found the ad for the show casting on Instagram. I showed the ad to my mom and said, ‘Look, they’re looking for single divorced parents and their college-aged kids. Let’s apply — this would be funny.’ But, I was not thinking seriously about it. RICHARD ROSSER: Go on. BREANA: I never thought we would get picked. And all of a sudden, we got a phone call, and then there was another phone call, and then there was a Zoom meeting, and then my mom and I thought, ‘Oh, wow, this is really happening right now.’ And then suddenly, they asked us to fly out to LA. We started filming shortly after that. RICHARD ROSSER: What happened next? BREANA: They told us that the children would go into a content-creating household to make content about having single parents. So we thought we were going to create content with our parents. Then once we got to LA they let us know we would be in two separate houses. Once we got to the houses — well, my mom knew she would be dating other parents, but we didn’t know as the kids that we were going to be watching them and meddling with them. We learned that when we arrived at the house. It was definitely very shocking but also fun. RICHARD ROSSER: Did anyone back out of the show at that point?

I learned a lot about the parents that I didn’t need to know. — Breana KAREN: No, no one backed out. I think all the parents were game for it. There were thousands of applications for the show. So you feel really good that you got chosen out of all these people across America. We’re pretty proud because, besides being residents of our booming Pompano Beach, Breana and I are the only Hispanic cast members. RICHARD ROSSER: So let me ask you, what can you tell me about the experience? I know you’re not going to tell me what happens in the show. I won’t even go there. But what is your takeaway? What is your feeling? KAREN: It was just a fantastic experience. We bonded so beautifully as a family with the other retreat members — the other cast members. I learned a lot about

myself in regards to dating. I’ve been divorced for eight years, and it’s been tough for me to be vulnerable, let my walls down and open up. But, I was able to do that on the show, and through this whole experience, I saw a different side of me. RICHARD ROSSER: How did that happen? KAREN: There were various activities they had us do. One time we stared into each other’s eyes for five minutes. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul — and it’s true. And the yoga paddleboarding date was hilarious. I thought I am active. I do yoga, and being from Pompano Beach, I know how to paddleboard. I just never combined the two. And while you do the yoga poses, you depend on each other and have to communicate without words. So you only focus on the person that you’re with. You have to be a little vulnerable and trust them. RICHARD ROSSER: Really? KAREN: The various activities just opened all of us up and allowed us to be vulnerable. RICHARD ROSSER: So Breana, I’m going to flip the question over to you. What did you learn as a younger person? BREANA: I learned a lot about the parents that I didn’t need to know. The experience opened our eyes and humanized our parents. We learned that our parents are just like us, they’re trying to date just like us, and they’re trying to figure it out, as we are. And just because they’re our moms and our dads doesn’t mean they know everything. And that brought us closer together. I don’t want to speak for everyone, but I believe it did the same for them. RICHARD ROSSER: Anything else you want to add to that? BREANA: But also the friendships and the relationships that grew on the show. Going into a reality show, you hear no one usually gets along, and people can be fake. But we genuinely were all so close and such a family. RICHARD ROSSER: You’re talking about the younger people or both groups? The younger and the older. KAREN: Both groups. BREANA: Both groups grew such friendships. We were like a family. The kids bonded because our parents are divorced, and we all have two separate households. We share all the troubles that go with having divorced parents. That brought us closer together as kids. And then watching our parents who are all single parents, that brought them closer together on a different level. RICHARD ROSSER: Were the parents and the kids ever together? KAREN: No, but those kids meddled in our dates quite a bit. BREANA: We spent most of our days watching our parents. We really got to know the parents. RICHARD ROSSER: So tell me about meddling in your parents’ dates.

BREANA: I can tell you that we had fun with the manipulations and the meddling, but it also came with some consequences that made things very awkward and cringy. RICHARD ROSSER: Ah. Would you have done anything differently? BREANA: No, I’m very proud of how the show turned out. And we had no clue how the show would be presented. The producers could create anything they wanted, but it turned out very beautiful and very wholesome It simply shows the love between the parents and the kids. RICHARD ROSSER: Oh, that’s good. Do you feel that way too Karen? KAREN: I do. As for the parents, what you see on camera is exactly what happened. We were very genuine, very open; we were ourselves. And we were really present and trying to form relationships and find a partner. That part is real. I think the production team has done a fantastic job. I don’t want to give too much away because I want the readers to watch the series, but there was a point when Breana and I faced a very difficult moment. I saw it yesterday for the first time, and it brought tears to my eyes. Watching it again was like an out-of-body experience I hope the readers take this journey and see that dating life doesn’t end because you get divorced. And your dating life doesn’t end because you’re over 40 or 50. You can find love, or you can find friendships, or you can find self-love. Yes, there are those cringy moments, and it’s funny. The kids made some moments so awkward for us, but we didn’t find out until after we left that they were manipulating situations — that our kids were the so-called dating consultants. RICHARD ROSSER: So that’s the gimmick. KAREN: That’s the gimmick. Yeah, we didn’t know. We kept getting told the dating consultants wanted you to go on a date with a specific person and then suddenly something strange would happen on the date. And I would think — this is crazy, what’s going on here? At one point, the parents did wonder if it was our kids? But we didn’t think the producers would do that. And lo and behold, our kids were pulling the strings. RICHARD ROSSER: So how could they do this show again now that the secret’s out? BREANA: The producers do their magic. Somehow they got us on there, and they didn’t even tell us why we were there. KAREN: For season two they would have to come up with something original. I have some ideas for them.

But, the show was created by Greg Daniels and his daughter Haley Daniels. Greg Daniels produced “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation.” I’m sure they’ll come up with a different concept for season two. RICHARD ROSSER: Yeah, good point. KAREN: A lot of fans have asked about a reunion. So, hopefully, there’ll be a reunion with an update on what happened with the show. RICHARD ROSSER: Can I ask about success with any of the dates on your end? KAREN: Definitely, I need the readers to tune in to see if I did find love or if I didn’t. RICHARD ROSSER: I had to ask. Okay, what did I miss? BREANA: I had success with meddling.

people dating in their 40s and50s, and it also features college-age kids, so there are two age groups. Dating shows usually highlight people in their 20s. So this is something that most of America can relate to, whether you’re young or older. RICHARD ROSSER: It sounds like the showrunners were serious about keeping it authentic instead of tawdry and salacious. KAREN: Absolutely. HBO kept it authentic, and they kept it honest. RICHARD ROSSER: You guys have been gabbing for hours now, so I’ll let you go, and I look forward to watching the show.
