Two mayors, two cities and one tall tale for the ages. Yes, we are talking about Lighthouse Point and Pompano Beach and how two mayors settled a dispute with a friendly tennis match.
We’ve all searched for new way to pass the time and enjoy ourselves these days. Local photographer, Debra Todd chronicled the life of birds living in her backyard in a project she calls, “What I did During Quarantine.”

Joyful Contagion BY SUSAN ROSSER
I have a prediction to make. After the pandemic is behind us, movie theaters will come roaring back. Prior to the whole Covid debacle, theaters were having a rough go of it. Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and others were taking a big bite out of their business. It's easier and certainly cheaper to watch a flick as you lounge on your sofa and eat popcorn from your pantry. And I admit, I had fallen into that rut. But during the pandemic, movie lovers realized that magic happens inside a theater. Let me explain. Years ago, my friend Selena insisted we go together to see the comedy "Bridesmaids." She had already seen in it, loved it, and knew I would too. As we sat next to one another, I laughed so hard I thought I might have developed appendicitis. And even though this was Selena's second time around, she cried from laughing so hard. She happens to have one of those contagious laughs. So between her laughter and the uproarious comedy playing on the silver screen, I'm not sure I have ever laughed harder at a movie. In fact, everyone around us was absolutely hysterical. If this had been a live performance, someone would have told us what a great audience we were. There was a palpable shared energy in that theater. We all know that laughter is catching. So while everyone howled at the comedy before us, our reactions were increased by one another. A few weeks later, I took my husband to see the film. For some reason, that audience wasn't as raucous as the first. Don't' get me wrong, I laughed all over again. But this time, I didn't fear an appendectomy. And although I know this was my second time seeing the film, so none of the jokes were new to me, I realized immediately that I experienced some sort of audience alchemy that first time around.

And I think after almost a year of missing out on theater, concerts, religious services, classes and large gatherings of all sorts, we have a more profound understanding of connection and how vital it is. I am not talking about close relationships, which undoubtedly provide some of life's greater joys. But connecting on a larger scale to the community all around us is also essential. Laughing along with a theater full of strangers is cathartic, uplifting and provides a sense of belonging. It's a truly human experience. When we hear the word contagious, images of the sick and masks and charts upon charts creep into our consciousness. And never has that been more real than in the past year. But other things are contagious, and chief among them are laughter, kindness and generosity. The world certainly has a different vibe these days. When I am out and about, I miss that carefree energy you could find in restaurants, theaters and even the grocery store. I miss being part of an audience all laughing at the same joke or applauding the same song. What can I say? I want to go to the movies and be immune to the fact that the person behind me is laughing so hard that invisible viral particles may have landed on me. On the other hand, I do want to be infected by their laughter. Y

A1A In Pompano Beach Is About to Undergo a Major Makeover A1A (Ocean Boulevard) in Pompano Beach is getting set to undergo a major improvement project funded by the City’s G.O. Bond. Construction is expected to get underway this month. The project will be carried out in two phases. Phase 1 of the project will start at Sunset Lane (south of Terra Mar Drive, at the boundary with Lauderdale-By-The–Sea) and stop on the south side of Atlantic Boulevard. Work will start with the undergrounding of overhead utilities to reduce power outages during storms and improve the corridor’s aesthetics, according to Horacio Danovich, the city’s capital improvements and Innovation District director. Other improvements include planted medians, new pedestrian crosswalks, landscaping on the east and west sides of A1A, and repaving. Existing street lights will be converted to new, decorative LED street lights, and the total number of street lights will be increased. Where possible, the existing sidewalks and bike lanes will be widened. The bike lanes, which are currently three feet wide, would be increased to a minimum width of five feet. The existing northbound and southbound vehicular travel lanes will remain 11 feet wide. Phase 1 of the A1A improvements project is expected to take 12 months to complete. Partial lane closures will be

necessary, but they will be minimal, said Danovich. There won’t be any detours, only flagmen directing traffic if required. During the project, there will be intermittent disruption to the existing sidewalks on a block-byblock basis. The undergrounding of the overhead utilities requires equipment to jack and bore lines under the sidewalk. Pedestrians will not be allowed in the construction area while equipment is present and will be directed to use a sidewalk that provides a safe path. Phase 2 of the project will start at Atlantic Boulevard and continue northward to the Hillsboro Inlet.
TOP rendering of A1A improvements BOTTOM aerial of project site
It is anticipated to begin in early 2022, and should take 1.5 years to complete. The same improvements that will be carried out in Phase 1 will also be made in Phase 2. The entire A1A improvements project, from Sunset Lane to the Hillsboro Inlet, roughly a three-mile stretch, is currently estimated to cost approximately $21 million, with most of the funding coming from the G.O. Bond. For the repaving, additional funding will come from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in the form of a grant. Phase 1 will receive $652,000 from FDOT; the amount for Phase 2 is yet to be determined. Y

The property is currently occupied by a two-story office building fronting Atlantic Boulevard, and a 27-unit townhome community located south of the office building, along the Pompano Canal. The existing office building and townhomes, which were built in 1974, would be demolished to make way for the new development. The project, called 400 East Atlantic, would consist of eight stories with roughly 75 studios, 116 one-bedroom units and 43 two-bedroom units.

Studios range from 450 to 660 square feet, one-bedroom units range from 565 to 1,320 square feet, and twobedroom units range from 890 to 1,500 square feet. According to the plans, the development would have approximately 3,000 square feet of retail space and a 1,000-square-foot leasing office on the ground floor along Atlantic Boulevard to create an “urban, pedestrian-friendly environment.” Floors 1-4 would have residential units wrapped around a 251-space parking garage. The fifth floor would have residential units and an open-air deck that features a raised garden and a 2,285 square-foot amenity space. Floors 6-8 would have residential units looking down on the garden deck. A 1,400-square-foot rectangular pool and “resort-style” landscaping is proposed on the rooftop deck, overlooking the Pompano Canal, which runs along the south side of the development. The project would include a 15-foot wide pedestrian promenade along the

canal and a 10-foot wide boat dock. The modern design of the mixeduse building includes an artistic mural on the west façade and on a roof tower. The project site has a base zoning of Transit Oriented (TO) and is located in the Atlantic Boulevard East Overlay District (EOD), the City’s newest mixed-use zoning district. The land use designation is East Transit Oriented Corridor (ETOC), which is intended to encourage mixed-use development along Atlantic Boulevard and support mass transit use and a pedestrian-friendly environment. The ETOC land use requires developers to make an affordable housing contribution by setting aside a minimum of 15% of the proposed units as affordable housing or paying an in-lieu-of fee for each unit. According to documents submitted to the City, the developer of 400 East Atlantic plans to contribute the in-lieu-of fee, rather than provide affordable housing units in the project.Y

What’s New at the Pompano Beach Fishing Village OWNERS OF THE BEACH HOUSE HAVE PLANS TO OPEN A MEXICAN RESTAURANT Brimstone Restaurant Group, which opened the Beach House restaurant in the Pompano Beach Fishing Village in 2018, now has plans to open a Mexican restaurant across the street. The restaurant would occupy a currently vacant parcel, known as Parcel R3, at 250 N. Pompano Beach Boulevard. The parcel is located on the southeast corner of the Pompano Beach Fishing Village site, west of the pier. Last November, Brimstone Restaurant Group signed a lease for Parcel R3 with PPA, LLC, an affiliate of Pompano Pier Associates, the developer of the Pompano Beach Fishing Village. The restaurant plans are currently going through the City’s review process. The restaurant would be in a one-story building with roughly 6,500 square feet of interior space and a 2,500-square-foot patio. There would be two full bars — one inside, one outside. The outside would have a small fireplace. A 40-seat private dining room would be available for parties and other events.

The restaurant, which has not yet been officially named, would be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. “It’s not going to be a traditional Mexican restaurant,” said Andy Fox, operating partner of Brimstone Restaurant Group. “It’s going to be a scratch-made kitchen serving a lot of fresh seafood with a Mexican flair.” The menu will also feature tacos, pizzas, quesadillas, fajitas and freshmade guacamole. “We will make everything inhouse,” said Fox. “We’ll cut our own fish, and our own steaks.” The goal is to have about 10 beers and seven wines on tap. Margaritas would also be on tap, with sour mix made with freshly-squeezed juices. Breakfast options include huevos rancheros and eggs Benedict with a Mexican twist, “but you’ll also be able to get bacon and eggs with toast,” said Fox. “There’s always a lot of beach traffic early in the morning, so we knew we wanted to do some breakfast

there,” said Fox. The plan is to have garage doors — like the ones at the Beach House — on the east side of the restaurant, facing the beach, so in nice weather the interior space can be made open-air. The patio would be at the restaurant's south end, with a straight view of the ocean. Parking for the restaurant would be in the Pier Parking Garage. According to current plans, the height of the restaurant building would be 23 feet 8 inches. New York-based Lovin’ Oven Catering had plans to build a catering hall and event facility on Parcel R3, but those plans were canceled last year. Members of the community had expressed concern about traffic, parking and the height of the proposed building, which was higher than they had anticipated – 41 feet 10 inches to the roof deck, and 55 feet to the top of the stairwell and elevator tower. “We want to be a good neighbor,” said Fox. “We’ve gone out of our way to make sure we don’t block any condo or hotel views.” Parcel R3 is the last parcel in the
Fishing Village that has yet to be filled. According to Fox, Brimstone Restaurant Group had always wanted to do a Mexican concept on the parcel because Jeffrey R. Anderson — who along with his sons J.R. Anderson and Anders Anderson founded Brimstone Restaurant Group — was one of the original people behind Chi-Chi's Mexican Restaurants, and was the largest franchisee of Chi-Chi's on the east coast of the United States. “We were interested in that spot from the beginning,” said Fox. “Once it became available again after the deal for the catering facility fell through, we jumped on it.” In addition to the Beach House, Brimstone Restaurant Group also owns Brimstone Woodfire Grill in Doral and Pembroke Pines. The Pompano Beach Fishing Village development includes the Beach House and Oceanic restaurants, Lucky Fish Beach Bar and Grill, Alvin’s Island and the Pier Parking Garage. Still under construction are BurgerFi, Kilwins, Cannoli Kitchen and a dual-branded Hilton hotel.
THE HILTON, BURGERFI, KILWINS AND CANNOLI KITCHEN WILL BE OPENING SOON
After various delays — some related to permitting and COVID-19 – construction of four new businesses in the Pompano Beach Fishing Village will be completed soon. The 5-story dual-branded Hilton hotel (Hilton Home2Suites and Tru by Hilton), located south of the Pier Parking Garage, is expected to open by the beginning of April, according to the developer Aashish Patel of the Fort Myers-based Madhav Group.
Currently, all the interior and exterior finishing work is being done, such as the carpet, tile, painting, installation of cabinets, landscaping, outside paver work and signage. Patel said the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the opening by about three months because it was difficult to procure furniture, fixtures and equipment, and during construction, there were fewer workers. “We’re looking forward to the hotel opening,” said Patel. “For the businesses that are open and are about to open, we really hope to be a good complement and to help bring a lot more people to the Fishing Village.”
progress. Kavadas is also one of the owners of the original Cannoli Kitchen that opened 26 years ago at 2001 N. Federal Highway in Boca Raton. “We are eager to open,” said Kavadas. “I’m excited to bring a variety of pizzas and Italian favorites to the residents of Pompano, served in a fast and friendly environment.” Kilwins, specializing in confections such as chocolates, ice cream and fudge, is also busy with its interior buildout but is aiming for an opening on March 1, 2021. The Kilwins in the Pompano Beach Fishing Village is owned and operated by South African-born Sean and Jody
“It is a challenging time for us to be opening a store. But we’re excited about it, and we feel that we can offer a safe environment for our neighbors and friends to come in and have a fun outing while they’re at the Fishing Village. Everybody needs a glimmer of fun in their lives right now.” — Jody Kotzen, Kilwins owner The new BurgerFi restaurant expects to open in early April. The interior buildout and the outside dressings of the building are being completed. The BurgerFi in the Pompano Beach Fishing Village is locally owned and operated by franchisee Foiled By The Burger, LLC. “It’s been a really long time coming, but we’re so excited that it’s finally getting closer,” said Kevin Koury, managing owner of Foiled By The Burger. “We can’t wait to serve the community and be a part of Pompano Beach moving forward.” Cannoli Kitchen expects to open its doors the first week of April, according to Christiana Kavadas, one of the owners. The buildout of the restaurant’s interior is in
Kotzen of Pompano Beach. “It is a challenging time for us to be opening a store,” said Jody Kotzen, “but we're excited about it, and we feel that we can offer a safe environment for our neighbors and friends to come in and have a fun outing while they're at the Fishing Village. Everybody needs a glimmer of fun in their lives right now.” The two most recent openings in the Pompano Beach Fishing Village are Alvin's Island (August 2020), a two-story beach goods store that also offers a vast array of Pompano Beach souvenirs, and Lucky Fish Beach Bar and Grill (July 2020), located right on the beach, just south of the pier. The Beach House opened in 2018, and Oceanic in 2019. Y FEBRUARY 2021 • pointpubs.com

NE 33rd Street Is Getting Set for Big Improvement Project Northeast 33rd Street, the twolane main thoroughfare of the Cresthaven neighborhood in Pompano Beach, is about to undergo major improvements funded by the city’s G.O. Bond. Construction is expected to get underway this month. The project will enhance the segment of NE 33rd Street between Federal Highway and Dixie Highway. The overall goal of the project is to address safety, connectivity and beautification, said Horacio Danovich, the city’s capital improvements and Innovation District director.
The 10 existing street lights along the project corridor will be converted to new, decorative LED street lights, and 25 additional LED street lights will be installed. Brick pavers will be installed at the Intersections of NE 12th Avenue, NE 14th Avenue and NE 15th Avenue, serving as a traffic calming feature. Portions of the existing sidewalk on the north side of NE 33rd Street will be replaced. New sections of sidewalk will be added on the south

side of NE 33rd Street, in areas where there is currently no existing sidewalk. Other improvements include new non-signalized crosswalks to traverse NE 33rd Street and the side streets, new landscaping along the entire corridor, and repaving. New curbing, irrigation and drainage modifications will also be added. The project is anticipated to take nine months to complete, subject to weather, said Danovich.
During the project, there will be lane closures. Detour plans will be implemented for drivers to circumnavigate the work areas. There will also be intermittent disruption to the existing sidewalks on a block-by-block basis. Pedestrians will be directed to use a route away from the work zone. The NE 33rd Street improvements project will cost a maximum of $2,975,704, with all funding coming from the G.O. Bond.Y

Personal Development
New Year & New Habits BY CRAIG HALEY
2020 IS IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR, AND WE ARE IN HIGH GEAR, WORKING TO MAKE 2021 A MUCH BETTER YEAR. STILL, MOST PEOPLE WHO MAKE NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS NEVER actually execute the changes or improvements. Only 4% of people who set New Year's resolutions stick to them. Yet, we hear of some people making changes and accomplishing great results. I read that New Year's marks four years of sobriety for actress Rumer Willis. Comedian and game show host, Drew Carey, stopped drinking, started exercising, changed his diet, and lost nearly 100 pounds some years ago. So, how do some people do it while others struggle? Is it just doubling down on your will power? No way! There was a study on willpower. Two groups of people were asked to work on an unsolvable problem. One group was given a plate of warm, freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, and told not to eat them until they finished the problem. The other group was given a plate of radishes and told not to eat them until they were done with the problem. Needless to say, that wasn’t too hard to do! The chocolate chip cookie group only worked on the problem for nine minutes before giving up. The radish group worked for over 20 minutes. So, clearly will power tires you out and fades with time! The answer lies in changing your habits. Did you know that 90% of everything we do is based on our habits? Let’s talk about some strategies to change your practices this year to create better results, achieve your goals, and live the life you want to. STRATEGY #1: MAKE IT EASY! If you want to start exercising first thing in the morning, set yourself up for success. Lay your clothes and sneakers out the night before, so when you get up, everything you need is right there. If you don’t do this, it’s too easy to talk yourself out of taking action. Suppose you want to read more, place your book on your reading chair so you can’t miss it. Do you want to practice guitar more frequently? Pull the guitar out of the case and set it up where you practice. We are all lazy! It’s human
26 pointpubs.com •
POINT! PUBLISHING
nature. Set yourself up for success in advance, and it will be much easier to follow through consistently. STRATEGY #2: REPLACE IT! One of the best ways to change your habits is to swap a bad habit for another one. For example, you can swap out drinking soda with sparkling water with a squeeze of lemon — both have that fizzy satisfaction. Do you want to stop snacking on chips late at night? Swap out the chips for carrot sticks. It’s the same crunching sensation! If you are trying to cut down on alcoholic beverages, drink sparkling water mixed with cranberry juice. Or switch out beer for the nonalcoholic beer. STRATEGY #3: FOCUS ON ADDITION, NOT SUBTRACTION!
When Montel Williams was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, he had to make changes to his diet. He had to give up foods that he loved, like steak and potatoes. Instead of focusing on what he could no longer have, he focused on what he needed to add to his diet — like salmon with a large, flavorful salad. He got excited about some of the new foods he tried and enjoyed. Focus on what you get to add in! STRATEGY #4: BET ON YOURSELF AND MAKE THE PENALTIES OF FAILURE STING! Accountability is a powerful strategy. Find a
partner and tell them your goal. Then commit that you will write a check to a person or an organization you detest if you fail. Tell your accountability partner that they cannot listen to any stories or excuses of why you did not follow through. It’s all about results. If you hit the goal, you keep the money. If you fail, they send in your money to that person or organization that you loathe! Make sure you give them the check at the beginning, so there is no backing out! 2021 can be a fantastic year! Decide on your three big goals, identify what habits you need to add in, change, or eliminate, and watch the success and victories come rolling in. Get Psyched
A Case of Covid BY DR. JILL SELBACH
I KNOW WE ARE ALL TIRED OF DEALING WITH COVID-19 IN SO MANY WAYS. AS I WRITE THIS ARTICLE, I AM REFLECTING ON MY RECENT EXPERIENCE. I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO SHARE. On a Friday morning, I woke up and worked for a few hours and then exercised with some friends. Tough workout. And I got through it with my usual complaining. Felt great, as always, when I was done. I had dinner with a few friends and began to feel a slight tickle in my throat. Saturday was uneventful, and I felt a little more of that tickle in my throat and a bit tired. Sunday, I woke up with nasal congestion. We have had quite a bit of construction in my house, so I chalked it up to allergies due to the 2-inch thick dust that had collected on everything. However, I declined my husband's offer to go out with him just in case. I sat outside for the day and stayed away from the kids. On Monday, while still congested, I felt fine otherwise. Out of what I considered to be paranoia, I went to get a Covid test. I went to a site that only gave PCR tests, which take up to three days to come back. I worked by phone or video on Monday. Tuesday, I got in the car at 7:15am and drove to a site to get a rapid test, just in case. On the way home from my test, I received my results…. POSITIVE FOR COVID. I was shocked. I spent the day experiencing so many emotions. I thought that the average person probably would never have gone for a test in the first place and surely not curtail their outings. That was a concern. I saw the positive test results and thought this is not the most accurate test. Let me see what the PCR test says. So the isolation began. I informed my family that they were now going to wait on me hand and foot and run the household for the next 10-14 days. Then, their panic ensued, not because of COVID but because of all the work they needed to do. So, I started this whole process with denial. How could this happen? Where did I get it? I had a moment of fleeting fear for myself (mainly because I was at the mercy of my family). Then I had to call everyone with whom I was in contact. Oh the dread!! These were not calls I wanted to make. I worried about the reaction people would have and then I worried about their health if they did fall ill. Two weeks is a long time to wait to see if you are the responsible party who infected someone. I realized I had gone through all the stages of grief outlined by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross. Denial, anger, bargaining,
28 pointpubs.com •

depression and finally, acceptance. Then as my isolation period was up, I began walking around the neighborhood only to have neighbors ask how I was. I now understood the shame that people had who had been infected and how they did not want to readily share this information with others. Suddenly my neighbors were wearing masks in their driveways to talk to me from the street. People were afraid of me! There would be no Christmas or New Years' Eve for the Selbach family. Then just as my isolation was ending, my family got retested to be safe. The rapid tests all came back negative. Two days later, my son's PCR test came back positive, and the other family members had to isolate again. The waiting and isolation was luckily, the most challenging part for our family. We have been so fortunate to have only mild symptoms and not to have infected the people we were with before developing symptoms. We all need to stay vigilant and not go around others when we have any symptoms without checking to see if it is COVID. Please don't assume you know that it isn't COVID. Be patient while waiting for test results. Think ahead to how you will feel if you chose not to stay home and infect someone who becomes seriously ill. These were the hard discussions we had with ourselves and our children. Now we are looking at the next weekend when no one is infected to celebrate Christmas with the standing rib roast waiting patiently for its debut in the freezer. It Dawned on Me
Love: A Tale of “Self-Care and Stubbornness” BY DAWNE RICHARDS THIS IS A STORY ABOUT MY LOVE FOR MY CATS — KIDDING PLEASE KEEP READING — I'VE WRITTEN ENOUGH ABOUT MY CATS TO LAST YOU UNTIL, OH, THE NEXT CENTURY. No, this is about loving yourself. It’s also about stubbornness. Are you sick of hearing about the importance of self-care? I am. It seems that much of what we call self-care is what my parents called self-indulgence. Yes, I'm a curmudgeon. Get off my lawn that these kids today are too lazy to mow because they want everything handed to them and ….
Again, I digress. Anyway, last February (of 2020 — you know, the February that was 10 years ago) I was a self-care poster child, regularly hitting the gym. And then… boot camp. Not actual boot camp, but a special session at a local gym. “This is great!” I thought. “I can be in even better shape at 60 than I was at 50!” News flash: 60 is not 50. This cannot be overstated. In fact, I suggest starting every day by looking in the mirror and repeating this over and over. Here’s something else I learned: They don’t call it “boot camp”

for nothing. At the session, there were just two of us and the trainer. The other participant seemed kind of like me – i.e., “normal.” Not a 22-year-old bodybuilder, not an octogenarian. Not that there’s anything wrong with octogenarians! And 22-year-old bodybuilders are, well, intimidating when you’re a 60-year-old in “boot camp.” Where am I going with this? Right to the doctor. Actually, that’s not where I went, which is the problem. The trainer paid close attention to me and the normal guy. He continually exhorted me not to overdo it (unlike actual “boot camp,” of course). “I’m good!” I insisted, gritting my teeth. “Really!” Alas, I was not good. I don’t recall pulling a muscle, or doing anything that brought on a sudden, acute pain, but I do recall thinking “OMG.” The next day, stiff and sore, I went… back to the gym for a “normal” training session. Idiot! Clearly, I’ve learned nothing in six decades of life. “You sure you’re up for this?” asked the trainer. “Yep!” I lied, and ground through the session. The next day, I noticed something a little worse than typical soreness. Specifically, my left hip area was displeased with all of this "self-care." Naturally, I waited for weeks to go to the doctor; it seemed that the pain was probably a “self-limiting” condition. The doctor knew exactly what was wrong. I have “Trochanteric bursitis,” which in technical terms means “I overdid it and then kept overdoing it (self-care!).” So, how is this treated? “You need to rest,” said the doctor. “OK,” I lied. It’s now the one-year anniversary of my 2020 “self-care” debacle. I won’t bore you with the details but suffice it to say that I’ve tried every nutty way to heal my hip except rest. Shockingly, they haven’t worked. So, for this year, I have new self-care goals: Rest Get manicures. I assume getting my nails done will not result in trochanteric bursitis. Y

One-Pot Wonder SALMON WITH SPINACH AND ARTICHOKES BY MRS. KOSSENFLOFFER
Every time I reach for a container of heavy cream at the grocery store, I feel a tinge of guilt. Thankfully, it passes quickly and I power through. Now and then, it’s good to be decadent. Everything in moderation. If you are a fan of spinach and artichoke dip, this dinner is for you. Here, I use salmon, but the recipe would work well with boneless chicken breasts too. It’s more about the sauce than anything else. >>>

4 salmon fillets, skin on or off kosher salt and black pepper 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 shallots, thinly sliced 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1 cup heavy cream 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature and cubed 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 4 cups fresh baby spinach 1 (14-ounce) can artichokes. quartered juice from 1/2 a lemon
PREPARATION
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Sprinkle the paprika, salt and pepper on the salmon. Heat the olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over high heat. (I like to use a cast iron pan for this.) Add the salmon and cook for 2-3 minutes until it is seared and takes on a more goldenbrown hue. If using skin-on salmon, sear the skin side too. Remove the salmon from the pan to a plate. Reduce the heat to medium and make sure the pan has cooled off a little. Wipe down the pan with a paper towel — no need to wash it. In the same pan, melt the butter and add the shallots and cook until they are soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until the garlic is fragrant about 2 minutes. Add the crushed red pepper flakes, heavy cream and cream cheese. While stirring, bring the sauce to a simmer over medium heat. Continue stirring until smooth and creamy. Add the Parmesan cheese, artichokes and spinach. Cook until the spinach is wilted. Add the lemon juice and remove the pan from the heat. Taste the sauce for seasoning. Parmesan cheese is pretty salty so it may not need more salt. Nestle the salmon fillets into the sauce. Transfer to the oven and bake 10-15 minutes or until salmon is cooked through. Serve with lemon wedges and good crusty bread for optimum sauce soakage. Or cook up some orzo to toss with the extra sauce. Y

A TALE OF TWO CITIES B Y SAM ROSSER
SOURCE MATERIAL An interview of former Lighthouse Point Mayor Frank McDonough by Barbara Zisk, 2001

uring this time of global pandemic and national political upheaval, perhaps a story about how two mayors of Lighthouse Point and Pompano Beach, resolved the prickly issue of higher water rates will remind us of simpler times. Frank McDonough, a former Lighthouse Point mayor, gave decades of his life to his community, and in an interview with a Florida Atlantic University student reporter, Barbara Zisk, in the final months of his life, he told a story that would have made an excellent episode of “Parks and Rec.” In the late 60s, the City of Pompano Beach considered raising the water rates for a portion of Lighthouse Point that was still subscribed to Pompano Beach’s water distribution system. When McDonough became aware that some Lighthouse Point residents would have to pay higher water rates, he felt it was unfair since not all Lighthouse Point residents would be subjected to the higher prices. At the time, the mayor of Pompano Beach was a man by the name of Ed Stack who also owned the Silver Thatch Tennis Center.

“Everybody who was anybody in tennis visited there, played there, and Ed Stack owned it,” said McDonough during his interview with Zisk. So, the next time the press brought up Pompano Beach raising those rates, McDonough publicly challenged Stack to a tennis match. The winner would decide whether or not to raise the water rates. Eventually, after several years, they finally played. However, Stack had apparently been training with a professional tennis player for weeks ahead of the big match and leaking his efforts to the press. “His pro was Ian Laver. Rod Laver was the great Australian left-handed tennis player... This was his cousin, who was also a great pro,” McDonough recounted. Stack brought out all the stops for this match. “Ed had the band from Pompano Beach High School. He had the cheerleaders. He had a professional sitting in the chair to mediate the match.

He [the umpire] had been doing this all his life; everywhere, England, [Wimbledon] and a real pro,” McDonough remembered during his interview with Zisk. According to McDonough the referee clearly favored Stack. “He called out balls that were obviously in. He just harassed the daylights out of me all in good fun,” he recounted to Zisk. “And Ed’s standing back there with a big smile on his face,” said McDonough. The fix was in all along, but not how you might expect. “The thing was, he didn’t have a chance. He wasn’t that good,” said McDonough In the end, Mayor Stack of Pompano Beach threw his hands in the air and conceded the match to McDonough. And he didn’t increase the water rates to the residents of Lighthouse Point. If only things were still that simple. Y

With all the tennis courts closed during quarantine, I would sit on my balcony and enjoy my morning coffee. Our Gumbo Limbo tree had a couple of very bright orange birds hopping around in it. At first, I thought they were Baltimore orioles, but after a quick internet search, I learned we have spotted chested orioles here in South Florida. Who knew? I was then pleasantly surprised to see that they had a nest at the very top of the tree, and were making many visits throughout the day. I put my 400 mm “space shuttle lens” on my tripod-mounted camera and had the experience of a lifetime for the next two months. The resident Lighthouse Point “bird lady, “ Cynthia Rohkamm, told me I was very blessed to witness three baby orioles being raised right outside my window. When it came time for the babies to take flying lessons, I called my neighbors and asked them to keep their indoor-outdoor cats inside for a few days until the babies were fully flighted. Just when I thought they had flown away for good, one drizzly day, dad and baby were on the fence looking for more caterpillars. Snap! Another Audubon photo Unlike many people, I was never bored during quarantine because those orioles must have fed those babies 100 caterpillars every day. Now I guess we have another bird lady in Lighthouse Point. With a bird feeder in the backyard and another in the front yard, I have captured some fantastic photos of birds that I never really paid attention to before this Covid-19 fiasco. It’s incredible what’s all around you if you take the time to look.

The Nauti Dawg Marina Café. AMERICAN Nestled in at the Lighthouse Point Marina, the Nauti Dawg is a local favorite. Little Italian. PIZZA Little Italian Pizza is the best kind of Italian restaurant — the kind that feels like a hole-in-the-wall, but quickly grows vibrant as the large, steaming plates of homestyle Italian dishes come barreling out of the kitchen. The restaurant grinds their own sausage and bakes their own dough daily. While the small restaurant (with only about six cozy tables) doesn’t serve alcohol, they do allow BYOB (and there’s a liquor store conveniently located right next door). Families bring in bottles of red wine to cork, creating a joyous atmosphere. The restaurant has a huge menu with stromboli, calzone, soups, salads, subs, 26 kinds of specialty pizzas, baked pasta dishes, chicken and veal entrées and all your traditional pasta dishes and desserts. 448 S. Historic Alexandria
Enjoy a convivial hotel cocktail hour reminiscent of more formal times — but the entire Morrison House in Old Town Alexandria, Virgina is like that. You half expect John Adams himself to be seated nearby sipping brandy. More traditional than its neighbors in the Old Town Alexandria, the property elevates your appreciation for the American capital’s rich heritage — the subject of a lot of media coverage recently. Alexandria itself is a topic for an entire feature. Its position, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., allows for a unique and charming experience with quick access to the capital for site-seeing or business. The Morrison House is part of the Marriott Autograph Collection and its reviews reflect consistent high standards for service and cleanliness for the property with its 42rooms and three suites. Covid-19 restrictions are in effect as of this writing, so all travel guidance must be confirmed by the hotel. For example, the hotel restaurant is closed at this time. Superior Results for Hip and Knee Surgery Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice
My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the first phone call, you will find my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs. I care for people in their 80s and 90s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20s and 30s who desire an improved quality of life and want to feel “normal” again.
Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery
My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient. “Dr. Leone put my body back together. I was a long-time runner and now at 83-years-old all my pain is finally gone!”
~Tracey M, full and partial knee replacement patient
“I will forever be grateful to Dr. Leone and his amazing staff at Holy Cross. I can honestly say Dr. Leone is the most kind, patient, incredible doctor I have ever met. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
~Liyah, 32 years old, total hip replacement patient
