Creatively Speaking
Writings of Love BY SUSAN ROSSER THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF WRITING A PURPOSELESS MONTHLY COLUMN IS DEVELOPING AN IDEA. ONCE I FORMULATE THAT LITTLE KERNEL, FLUSHING OUT A TOPIC can be complex. Yet, over the years, I discovered I enjoy the process. So as I lounged on my couch one Sunday (in a particularly crummy mood), I started bouncing ideas around for my January column. Everything from an
essay on tipping to another on Taylor Swift’s 10-minute version of her hit “All Too Well” crossed my mind. I even started rough drafts of both. But nothing seemed to gel. And honestly, during these absolutely bananas times, I would prefer to write an upbeat piece. Over the past two years, I have done more than my fair share of doom scrolling. As I write this, the Omicron variant is making headlines. Of course, by the time this is published, we should know if it’s doomsday revisited, nothing to worry about or somewhere in between. So as I sunk deeper into my sofa, pondering the world, I wondered what topic I could turn into an essay people would enjoy. And then it hit me — not like a ton of bricks — but more like a gentle breeze.

POINT! PUBLISHING
In 2022, I hereby commit to writing columns of love. Now, I write a column every month, so I am talking about all kinds of love here — from friendship to family to food and fauna — who knows where this path will take me (and you, my dear reader). All I can say is I want to be positive, and writing a column about the custom of tipping or a 10-minute break-up song caused me to fantasize about tossing my laptop through the sliding glass door. So there you have it. This isn’t really a column; it’s more an introduction to a year’s worth of columns about love. I’ll start the year with why I mostly love writing this column. To put it plainly, I never thought of myself as a writer. Truthfully, I am a graphic designer, and when we bought the magazine, I never envisioned myself writing much of anything. But several people suggested I write the editor’s column. I titled it Creatively Speaking because I didn’t want to get boxed into a typical column about monthly magazine content. I thought it would be cool to have a space where I could simply get a little creative and weird or oddly personal. Over the years, I received mostly positive feedback. I
pushed myself to do something I honestly thought I couldn’t do. And while it hasn’t always been one-thousand percent enjoyable, it has been a rewarding journey. I hope my “love columns” will help me find joy and love in unexpected places. I expect to see everything with a renewed purpose. If I am looking for love, who knows what I will find. Y

The Clear Way to Straighten Teeth – Invisalign DR. GABRIELA ESPINOZA Everyone dreams of having a straight, beautiful smile. Unfortunately, many people suffer from having malaligned or crooked teeth. The embarrassment of having to hide your smile not only impacts your self-esteem and dental health but can also change how others interact with you. Thankfully, there is a more subtle way to straighten your teeth: Invisalign. Here are the advantages of Invisalign: Practically Invisible - The appearance of metal braces is typically what stops people from seeking help with their crooked teeth.
Professionals and those who are in careers that require a particular dress-code may feel as though their braces will not quite put out the vibe they want. And while looking younger isn’t always a bad thing, the benefits of the Invisalign system is that it is practically invisible. Removable - Traditional metal braces are bonded directly to your teeth and for some it is fortunate they cannot be removed. However, others consider this a disadvantage in that they cannot be removed to eat, sleep, or brush teeth. If
you wish to eat something that would be difficult with braces, simply remove the aligners yourself and put them back on when you are done eating. Must include full bio.
Dr. Gabriela Espinoza is a cosmetic and orthodontic dentist at Park Plaza Dental. She has over 10 years of clinical experience caring for her patients. She received her dental degree (DMD) from the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine and completed a fellowship in Orthodontics at New York University. Mixed-Use Development Gets Approved for Old Club Cinema Site The Pompano Beach Planning and Zoning Board, at its Dec. 15 meeting, approved the site plan for Sentosa, a mixed-use project planned for a 6.2-acre site along North Federal Highway in Pompano Beach, just south of Shoppers Haven and the RaceTrac gas station on NE 33rd Street. Falcone Group, headquartered in Boca Raton, is the developer behind the project, which consists of 285 rental apartments and 4,164 square feet of commercial space. The site, located at 3151-3251 N. Federal Highway, was previously occupied by a night club called Club Cinema, and a strip shopping center. Last year, the current property owner, 1307 South Wabash, LLC, demolished all the structures on the site, including the former Club Cinema building, which originally housed a movie theater. According to the approved site plan, Sentosa will consist of two 7-story buildings adjacent to Federal Highway, each with 60 residential units. Each of the buildings will also have two 928-square-foot groundfloor commercial spaces fronting the highway. To make the buildings “less obtrusive,” they will face northsouth, so that only the ends of the buildings will be parallel to Federal Highway, and not the entire length of the buildings. A third building with 165 residential units will be adjacent to the Cresthaven neighborhood,

which lies to the west of the project site. This U-shaped building will have seven stories, but the “ends” of the “U,” which will be closest to the neighborhood, will be four stories high. Amenities for the development will be located in this building, including a club room, full-service gym, yoga room, co-work space and an outdoor patio with a pool. The plans also include a pet spa and dog park. In a previous version of the plans, the façade of the U-shaped building was a solid seven stories. It was redesigned to include an approximately 30-foot separation in the middle of the façade, from the third floor up, to allow for increased airflow between the buildings. There will be two gated access points to enter and exit the development – one on Federal Highway and one on NE 33rd Street. The project includes several

surface parking areas with a total of 169 spaces. A 4-story parking garage with 280 spaces is proposed at the southwest corner of the property. In addition, seven spaces inside a detached garage at the southeast corner of the site, fronting Federal Highway, will be offered to residential tenants as an add-on rental item. The residential units range from studios averaging 575 square feet to three-bedroom units averaging 1,263 square feet. The plan is for all of the residential units to be rented at market rate, according to the developer. The project site is currently zoned as a business district, but the City’s zoning code allows multi-family development on the property with the allocation of “flexibility (flex) units.” The City Commission approved 285 flex units for the Sentosa project last month. A1A Twin Towers Project Is Moving Forward After Resolution of Litigation Against It Ocean Park Beach Residences, a 205-foot-high “twin towers” project planned for a vacant 0.62-acre parcel at 1508 N. Ocean Blvd. in Pompano Beach, is currently going through the City’s review process for site plan approval, just over a year after litigation brought against the project was resolved. The site of the proposed project is on the southeast corner of the NE 16th Street and A1A intersection, adjacent to North Ocean Park, a beachfront public city park that is designated as one of the resources along the Broward County A1A Scenic Highway. In July 2019, the City Commission approved a request by the developer, Mount Vernon Property Holdings, LLC, to rezone the vacant parcel in order to accommodate the project, which many residents in the surrounding neighborhood strongly opposed. The maximum height allowable before the zoning change was 105 feet. Members of the public who spoke out against the project and the rezoning of the property during city commission meetings said they were concerned about the height of the building, insufficient parking, potential traffic issues, incompatibility with the proposed site, and putting too much on such a small parcel. Some neighboring residents held a protest at the project site. In August 2019, two residents who live in proximity of the project site filed an appeal in Broward County Circuit Court against the City Commission’s decision to approve the rezoning of the property and a development agreement related to improvements the developer is proposing for North Ocean Park, but the appeal was denied in October 2020.

According to the site plan, the developer plans to construct a 19-story mixed-use building that includes two towers of luxury condominiums on top of a 3-story base. The base includes approximately 3,500 square feet of ground-floor commercial space (intended primarily for residents) and three parking levels with access fronting NE 16th Street. The fourth floor consists of a landscaped deck with a pool and other amenities. The residential component begins on level five. The two residential towers consist of 28 dwelling units, with each floor of each tower containing a single unit, except for the top floor, which contains a two-story penthouse. The proposed 19-story structure is approximately 50 feet taller than its closest multi-family neighbor, Tiffany Gardens to the north, which stands at 145 feet, but was built before the 105-foot height restriction was established. When the ordinance to rezone the project site came before the City Commission for final approval, Pompano Beach Mayor Rex Hardin, who voted against it, said: “It’s a beautiful project but not in that spot. It’s just not compatible with
ABOVE Rendering of Ocean Park Beach Residences
that park being right behind it. I think it’s just too large.” The developer proposes adding a new pavilion, restrooms, exterior showers, seating, landscaping, picnic tables, barbecue grills and fitness equipment to North Ocean Park, which will remain a public city park. All changes to the park must have City approval and must comply with all guidelines consistent with the park’s AIA Scenic Highway designation. The Ocean Park Beach Residences project also proposes to increase public parking spaces for North Ocean Park. Plans include reconfiguring NE 16th Street with parallel and 90-degree parking, curbing, gutters, walkways and enhanced landscaping. The current project is a revised version of plans the developer submitted to the City in 2017 as part of a rezoning request for the site, which was not approved. At that time, the project consisted of two 248-foot-high towers with 35 residential units. The mixed-use component was 768 square feet of unmanned kiosks and a 400-squarefoot Broward Sheriff’s Office substation on the ground floor. Y

Hidden Harbour Project Undergoes More Changes
DEVELOPER SEEKS TO BUILD PARKING GARAGE ON NE 16TH STREET The developers of Harborside at Hidden Harbour, a large-scale, mixed-use project approved in 2020 for a site at the corner of North Federal Highway and NE 16th Street in Pompano Beach, have revised the plans and are seeking approval from the City to build a 3-story parking garage on the corner of NE 16th Street and NE 24th Avenue. The Harborside at Hidden Harbour project consists of two mixed-use buildings – one fronting Federal Highway; the other on the south side of NE 16th Street – with 271 residential units and approximately 13,500 square feet of restaurant and retail uses. The building along Federal Highway includes an 8-story parking garage. The developers – AMP IV-Hidden Harbour, LLC and HTG AMP Harbourside, LLC – want to use the lot at 2351 NE 16th Street, along with a small, grassy lot to its west, both of which they own, as the site for the 3-story parking garage. The lot at 2351 NE 16th Street, currently occupied by a singlefamily home, was purchased by HTG AMP Harbourside in May 2021. The developers have submitted an application to the City to rezone the property from RD-1 (Two Family Residence) to PD-I (Planned Development Infill) and to add it to the previously approved Hidden Harbour PD-I zoning district. The proposed parking garage would serve the mixed-use building on NE 16th Street, directly opposite it. In the previous plans, a portion of the grassy lot on NE 16th Street was to be used for valet parking for residents of the building on NE 16th Street. A

valet drop-off area with five stacking spaces was to be in front of the building, off the public right-of-way, and the vehicles were to be parked in the garage of the building fronting Federal Highway. The grassy lot was to have nine spaces dedicated for use as an additional staging area in the event of a back-up. Initially, the grassy lot was intended to be set aside for use as a public park and residents in the building on NE 16th Street would have been required to park in the garage in the building along Federal Highway, and then walk to their units. A document submitted by the developers’ land use attorney as part of the rezoning application states that, according to a traffic study, the parking garage on NE 16th Street will reduce the need for up to 1,000

local trips per day impacting the intersection of NE 16th Street and NE 23rd Avenue (the roadway that runs north-to-south through the project site). The redesign will also remove delivery and garbage truck traffic completely from NE 16th Street so that it is accessed from NE 23rd Avenue. The introduction of the NE 16th Street parking garage will also allow a reduced area in the Federal Highway building that is devoted to parking, according to the land use attorney. Under the revised plan, additional portions of the Federal Highway and NE 23rd Avenue frontages will be lined with commercial and residential uses. The developers recently got approval to reduce the proposed height of the development, >>>

condo building. In addition to the reduced building heights, the number of residential units was reduced from 300 to 271 units. The proposed amendment to the Planned Development (PD), in addition to rezoning the property at 2351 NE 16th Street, would formalize the project’s height reduction, “ensuring that no future site plan revisions could seek more than eight stories without returning to
the City Commission for another PD amendment.” All of the remaining elements in the 2020 design are retained in the new design, including publicly accessible promenades along the waterway on NE 23rd Avenue and NE 16th Street. The existing 68,800-square-foot marina dry boat storage building on the east side of NE 23rd Avenue will remain unmodified. Y
A New Publix Is Planned as Part of Isle Casino Redevelopment
A new Publix is planned as part of the redevelopment of the Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park into Live! Resorts Pompano – an entertainment, hotel, dining, retail, residential and office hub. The Publix would occupy a site on the Isle Casino property’s northwest corner, which is being developed for commercial retail use. The entire Isle Casino property, located on the southeast corner of Powerline Road and SW Third Street (Racetrack Road), is being redeveloped by The Cordish Companies, which has already constructed 12 Live! facilities in cities throughout the United States, including Atlanta, Baltimore, St. Louis and Philadelphia.

The one-story, 55,454-square-foot Publix would have an attached liquor store, as well as a pharmacy with a drive-through window. The stand-alone building would also be occupied by a 10,913-square-foot retail store at the south end. Public access to the grocery store would be from the west side. According to the site plan, which is currently going through the City’s review process, the remaining portion of the northwest corner retail development would feature 10 additional one-story stand-alone retail buildings for a total of 154,374 square feet of gross building area. Approximately 835 surface parking spaces would be provided for the retail development.
The grocery store and retail buildings are framed by Racetrack Road, Powerline Road and the future Palm Aire Drive and Lucky Lane. The project site is a currently vacant 20.6-acre parcel within the 221.65-net acre Isle Casino property. The retail development project “is designed as first-class vibrant retail providing the opportunity for small businesses to operate within the resort and will benefit the entire community,” according to the plans. Currently, the City is also reviewing site plans for an e-commerce distribution center and an entertainment complex that are part of the Live! Resorts Pompano project. Y

Riverside Promenade’s Yellow Yolk Is Expected to Open this Summer Riverside Promenade, a restaurant and retail project currently under construction at the southeast corner of the Atlantic Boulevard Bridge, expects to see the opening of its first component – a breakfast spot called Yellow Yolk – in the next 6 to 8 months, according to the project architect, Julio Montaner. The Riverside Promenade development consists of two side-by-side restaurants along the Intracoastal Waterway, and a building located on Atlantic Boulevard between South Riverside Drive and Hibiscus Avenue that will contain Yellow Yolk and a small real estate office. The two waterfront restaurants will have their entrances on Riverside Drive. The larger of the two restaurants, located at 103 S. Riverside Drive will feature “casual Italian” fare, said Montaner. The smaller restaurant, which is adjacent to Atlantic Boulevard, will feature high-end international cuisine. Both restaurants will have indoor and outdoor seating. The project is being developed by Tsatas Acquisitions, the company that owns the property. It will
include roughly 100 surface parking spaces across the street from the two restaurants. Tsatas Acquisitions will operate Yellow Yolk and the other two eateries. The company owns Madisons New York Grill & Bar, which it opened in Boca Raton in 2013. The Riverside Promenade project had its groundbreaking in November 2017, and subsequently encountered delays. Last year, several design modifications were made to the two restaurant buildings, which needed to go

through the City’s approval process. The overall design concept has not been changed. The changes were solely related to revised interior design elements and screening mechanical equipment on the roof. Montaner said he expects the shells of all three buildings will be completed in March 2022, as well as the parking, landscaping and irrigation. The next phase will be the interior buildout of the Yellow Yolk building, followed by the Italian restaurant, and then the smaller restaurant. Y

It Dawned on Me
No Resolutions Were Uttered in the Writing of this Column BY DAWNE RICHARDS
2018 (WHICH, YES, WAS ONLY FOUR YEARS AGO, NOT 20, AS IT SEEMS) CAME TO A GRUESOME END FOR OUR FAMILY. GIVEN THE CIRCUMSTANCES WHICH TRANSPIRED, WE SPENT MOST of 2019 in a fog, and I’m endlessly grateful for friends, family, a great therapist, and oh — streaming services and jigsaw puzzles. I spent much of 2019 seated on the floor, at my coffee table, working on puzzle after puzzle and going through all four billion seasons of Law & Order SVU. Thank God for depraved criminals.
As 2019 drew to a close, we were able to exhale, sort of. We’d made it through the year of dreaded “firsts” and could look forward to (or, at least, anticipate with less dread) 2020. In late 2019, I decided — for the first time in my life — to “put my thoughts into the universe” for 2020. “That’s it!” I thought. “I have to move on. 2020 is going to be my year! I’m going to get back to normal. I’m going to start reaching out to more people. I’m going to live my life.”
32 pointpubs.com •
POINT! PUBLISHING
And 2020 said, “HAHAHAHAHAHA.” Perhaps you aren’t aware of my special powers; clearly, they’re fearsome. 2020, as we know, was decidedly not normal. I really, truly, stupidly believed that 2020 — a new year, and a new decade at that — would be “my year.” I faced January 1 full of optimism, sure that things would soon return to “normal” for me. And no, not the “new normal” — I hate that phrase — along with many other overused words and phrases such as “at the end of the day,” and my new least favorites: “unprecedented,” “I was today years old,” “Now more than ever.” I could go on and on; maybe I already have. Oh, look at that! I digressed — again. Anyway. 2020 started OK. January and February passed with little incident, and I began creeping back toward normalcy. And then — March happened. In a way, it feels like we’re still in March 2020, but that’s a story for another day. My point — and I do have one, I promise — is that after 60 years on earth, the universe was apparently appalled at the fact that I made a resolution. So it punished me, and along with me, punished the entire world. I’m so sorry. I’ve never set goals, either, other than “lose those last few pounds.” In that case, the goal seems, like prosperity, to be perpetually just around the corner. Ahem. What’s the difference between goals and resolutions, anyway? Are goals just resolutions plus a plan? Having never set goals or made resolutions, I’m not sure. Whoops! Another digression! So I’m here to issue all of you an apology. And I promise to never, ever, ever, make a New Year’s resolution again. I’m simultaneously smug in my belief that it’s pointless to do so and horrified that the one time I did, look what happened. Just look! Here’s wishing everyone a happy, healthy, prosperous 202… — Nope, not doing it. Y

Arturo Sandoval The list of accolades for Friday night’s headliner could fill this entire magazine. Sandoval is one of the most dynamic and vivacious live performers of our time, and has been seen by millions at the Oscars, at the Grammy Awards, and the Billboard Awards. He has been awarded 10 Grammy Awards and nominated 19 times; he has also received six Billboard Awards and an Emmy Award. The latter for his composing work on the entire underscore of the HBO movie based on his life, “For Love or Country,” that starred Andy Garcia. Not many people have a film made about their life while they are still alive, but Sandoval’s story is just that inspiring. Sandoval was born in 1949 in a town outside Havana. A prodigious talent, he played music as a child dabbling with percussion instruments and piano until he discovered the trumpet. “I used to love playing percussion…little congas and whatever I could get my hands on,” he stated. “In Cuba, it was practically impossible to get a hold of any instruments, so when I was 10 years old, my aunt brought me a small horn she got from a friend, and I was just so thrilled to have a real instrument. It was very challenging. The first trumpet teacher I went to in Cuba told me to play for him, and since I had never played before, he immediately told

me to throw the horn away and give it up. That day, at 10 years old, I walked all the way home crying the whole way. That’s when I decided I wasn’t going to let him discourage me, and I embarked on my journey as a trumpet player. The trumpet is one of my loves, the piano is definitely up there too!” Despite the restrictions in Cuba, Sandoval went on to develop an outstanding career, establishing the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna in 1967. Then in 1977, he met jazz icon Dizzy Gillespie and that relationship would alter the course of his life and music. While on tour in 1990 with the United Nations Orchestra, at Dizzy Gillespie’s invitation, Sandoval and his family were able to defect from Cuba and embark on a new life in the United States. “For Love or Country,” depicts the extraordinary chain of events surrounding his defection. “I am very proud of this film,” said the 2013 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. “I was very thankful HBO asked to do the film and, more so, that they were willing to tell the real story of what I went through and what many have gone through (and still do) living in Cuba. I was also so happy to write the underscore for the film, which I won an Emmy for Best Composer.” “Yes, meeting Dizzy changed my life, just as music did,” stated
Sandoval. “It was with his help that I was able to get political asylum and move to the U.S. with my family. He afforded me the greatest freedom as well as more personal and professional opportunities than I could have ever wished for. It’s a truly marvelous thing to meet your hero and then form a relationship and a bond with him. He was my mentor, my friend, my teacher and is still an inspiration to me every day.” Sandoval’s love and respect for his mentor also resulted in one of his many Grammy wins, for the album, “Dear Diz, Everyday I Think of You.” Sandoval is also a renowned classical musician, performing regularly with leading symphony orchestras worldwide. He has also recorded John Williams’ Trumpet Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra. For Sandoval, his love of performing for a live audience propels him to keep excelling and experimenting! “I am very lucky that I get to travel around the world and do what I love,” he said. “Not only for me, but it’s such a wonderful thing to be able to bring my music to audiences worldwide. Yes, it’s tiring, I’m getting old! Haha! But no matter how old I get, I feed off of the energy of the people I play for, and that keeps me energized and excited for the next show.”

Dee Dee Bridgewater Saturday Night’s headliner, Dee Dee Bridgewater is a multifaceted superstar. The Grammy and Tony Award-winning jazz giant has ascended to the upper echelon of vocalists, putting her unique spin on standards, as well as taking intrepid leaps of faith in re-envisioning jazz classics. Ever the fearless voyager, explorer, pioneer and keeper of tradition, her recent album, “Memphis...Yes, I’m Ready,” pays homage to the sounds of the city where she was born at Collins Chapel Hospital, located not far from where the album was recorded at Producer Willie Mitchell’s historic Royal Studios. “I was born in Memphis, but my family migrated north to Flint, Michigan, when I was 3 years old. The South has always remained buried inside me, and coming back for this recording project has brought me full circle in my life,” she stated. Bridgewater’s father, a trumpet player, affectionately known as “Matt the Platter Cat,” was a DJ at WDIA, a top Memphis radio station. Even when the family moved to Flint, Michigan, she would listen to the sounds of the Memphis music scene by tuning in late at night from across state lines. “Even as a young girl, the music moved me, inspired me, made me dance with joy and cry with emotion,” she said. Bridgewater’s mother also influenced her musical taste by introducing her to the music of Ella Fitzgerald, whose mesmerizing sound has been an inspiration throughout her career. While attending the University of

Illinois, the aspiring singer joined the University of Illinois jazz band for a U.S. State Department tour of the Soviet Union in 1969, and the following year she moved to New York. Bridgewater’s incredible talent quickly got her noticed, and she soon gained the respect of the leading musicians of the time. She earned her first professional experience as a member of the legendary Thad Jones/Mel Louis Big Band. Throughout the 70s she performed with such jazz notables as Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon and Dizzy Gillespie. Releasing a series of criticallyacclaimed albums throughout her career, including her wildly successful double Grammy Awardwinning tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, “Dear Ella”— all but one, have received Grammy nominations. And while jazz may have captured the top place in her heart, her extraordinary performing ability allowed her to pursue a parallel career in musical theatre with credits in productions of “Sophisticated Ladies, Black Ballad, Carmen” and “Cabaret,” along with Off-Broadway and West End Productions of “Lady Day,” for which Bridgewater received the British Laurence Olivier Nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. Bridgewater reached the pinnacle of theatrical success when she won a Tony Award for her role as “Glinda” in “The Wiz” in 1975. The artist recently revealed some
insights about this groundbreaking production to radio station WBUR. “I had never done actual Broadway theater before,” she said. “It was my first turn. I was a big follower as a little girl of the Ziegfeld Follies, and I just loved all of the production numbers, with the men carrying the damsel down the stairs and all of that. And actually, in the production, I was escorted down the stairs by the beautiful men from the Land of Oz and lifted in the air and carried while I sang the first song that I did, ‘A Rested Body Is a Rested Mind,’ and then after I told Dorothy how to get home, I sang that song ‘If You Believe.’” For Bridgewater, the cultural impact of “The Wiz” is something that also stays with her as she said that she still runs into people who share how the production changed their lives. While she did not get the role in the film version, she is very proud of the impact of that production. “We had never had any kind of film about African-American people — where the whole show was with African-American performers, and dancers. Of course, in the film, Lena Horn got my role of Glinda the Good Witch, but I have to bow down to Lena Horn because, for me, she was one of the forebears in the music industry that made it possible for people such as myself, including Diana Ross, to have the careers that we have. To see images of ourselves on a television screen, you know, I have no words to say.”

Tom Greene has spent a lifetime fishing and helping others to fish. Along the way, he collected some of the most impressive antique fishing reels, lures and other gear. I first interviewed Tom twelve years ago, in his office at Custom Rod & Reel, the tackle store he owned for 43 years and recently sold. His office then, and his house now, was jammed with fishing tackle from across many decades. When we met recently, I slowly started to realize the age and authenticity of all this gear. A onehundred-year-old fishing reel has a very distinct look. He explained to me why some of the antique reels look like a piece of fine jewelry, “because these were made by watchmakers. Wealthy fishermen wanted good reels, so they commissioned local watchmakers because they had the tools and understood gears,” he told me with the enthusiasm of someone who just learned this fact, but obviously, he learned this years ago.

We could dedicate an entire issue of this magazine explaining the history and evolution of sports fishing tackle over the last century. I imagine most residents are not eager for that level of knowledge when modern equipment is widely available at every price point. “Sometimes the packaging is more valuable than the item,” Tom jokes. As we walk from one room to the next, our conversation jumps from topic to topic as Tom describes everything effortlessly. I, like many people, remember my first fishing experiences with vivid clarity. Many of those memories were with my father, and I have incredible memories of my own children when fishing. The physical tools that facilitated those memories will always have value for generations to come.
The technological advancement of fishing tackle is often overlooked among humanity’s achievements, like discovering new continents or flying in air or space — but many people fish and need fish to survive. The invention of the reel, a cylinder with line wrapped around it and the means for the line to go in and out, yeah, that was a game-changer for fish populations worldwide. Thank the Chinese in the late-18th century for the first versions, but more modern versions that were designed for specific species of fish really took hold in the mid-19th century. But the last hundred years are represented a lot by what Tommie has personally collected. I spent some time on eBay and other sites looking at what people are selling and comparing items to what Tommie showed me. The world of antique fishing gear trading is alive and active.

PENDRY, CHICAGO The Pendry Chicago on the famed Michigan Avenue includes all the trappings of a modern luxury big city hotel with a twist of history. Located in the landmark Art Deco style Carbon & Carbide building, the property was recently converted to a hotel and honors the building’s past with a contemporary flair. The Pendry has four bar and restaurant offerings, including a rooftop option (for when it’s not too cold or windy). Venteux, is modeled after a Parisian brasserie, with cozy banquettes and massive windows along with outdoor cafe seating options. From the Navy Pier, the Art Institute of Chicago, to shopping on the Magnificent Mile — the Windy City has plenty to offer. The area is also home to several Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. (Visit flwright. org/tours/robie for tour information.)
With international travel being somewhat “iffy” these days, don’t forget we have impressive cities right here at home. Y

Superior Results for Hip and Knee Surgery Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the rst phone call, you will nd my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs. I care for people in their 80s and 90s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20s and 30s who desire an improved quality of life and want to feel “normal” again.
Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient. “Dr. Leone is the best. I had my left hip done using the SPAIRE technique and the recovery was so incredible I decided to have my right hip done.” ~Bettina Kapp
“I went to three orthopedic surgeons and Dr. Leone was the only one who discovered the underlying cause of my knee pain. Four days after my knee revision surgery I was walking eight miles.” ~Dan Bell
