The Developers of Sabbia Beach Plan to Build Ocean 723 Fernbrook Florida LLLP, the developer of the Sabbia Beach condominiums on A1A, plans to tear down the Sabbia Beach sales center directly across the street in order to build a 12-unit, threestory residential development, called Ocean 723. The sales center is located at 723 N. Ocean Blvd. on Sabbia Beach “Parcel B.” Fernbrook Florida LLLP, which owns the property, is requesting to rezone Parcel B from an RM-20 district (which allows for a zoning density of nine dwelling units) to a Residential Planned Unit Development (RPUD) district, which would allow for 12 dwelling units. The Pompano Beach Planning and Zoning Board approved the rezoning request in April. According to city officials, the rezoning application will likely go to the city commission this month for a first reading.

A site plan and building design application will also need to go through the city’s approval process. All 12 apartment units are proposed to be two-bedroom units, ranging from 1,433 square feet to 1,645 square feet in unit floor area.

Vehicles would access the Ocean 723 development from NE Seventh Court on the northwest side of the property and enter a screened parking garage. The proposed development would provide 10-foot buffers on the north, west, and south sides. The pool would be located on the southeast corner of the site, also buffered from adjacent views. The landscaping that currently exists on the site would be reused. The RPUD zoning district is intended to encourage the use of innovative and creative design to provide a mix of different residential uses in close proximity to one another, while at the same time providing an efficient use of open space. City, Community Members Collaborate on Street Murals with a Message Four crosswalks and eight storm drains located in the vicinity of City Hall and the Pompano Beach Cultural Center, along SW First Avenue and SW First Court, are about to become colorful works of art. As part of a multi-year project entitled, “Asphalt Art — The Crossroads Connection,” the Pompano Beach Public Art Committee, along with Pompano Beach artist William Savarese and the city’s utilities department, has been working with the community and local schools to develop the designs that will be painted on the crosswalks and storm drains. In addition to expanding community involvement in public art, the project aims to educate the community about the importance of protecting the city’s potable water supply by not discarding inappropriate and harmful materials down storm drains, such as trash, grass clippings and chemicals. Community engagement activities

were held, mostly virtually, to educate the community about asphalt art and the objectives of the project. There were also two online surveys for the public to fill out: one focusing on stormwater education and focusing on what the community would like to see in the asphalt murals on the crosswalks. These activities and feedback from the public art committee helped lead artist Savarese to design the four asphalt murals and eight storm drain murals. Members of the community, particularly students, were invited to submit design proposals for the storm drain murals, which served as inspiration for Savarese. This March, the Pompano Beach

City Commission approved the designs for the abstract crosswalk murals and in April, approved the designs for the storm drain murals, which have an eco-friendly theme. “The different shapes and colors in the asphalt art mural designs were created to exemplify the diversity in our community,” said Savarese. “The circles are separate yet glued together; this is the glue that holds us together. Interrelated, yet unique.” The city has hired a specialized professional contractor to install the asphalt murals at the crosswalks, said Laura Atria, the city’s public art program manager. The storm drain murals will be installed by community volunteers, assisted by Savarese, during a one-day “education celebration” scheduled for June 2. In April 2020, the Pompano Beach Public Art Program was awarded a $30,000 matching grant for the project from the Community Foundation of Broward. The project may have two subsequent phases.Y

Pompano Beach Historian and Activist Hazel Armbrister to be Honored The City of Pompano Beach is honoring longtime resident Hazel Armbrister, who died on March 16, 2021, by naming the plaza next to the Ali Cultural Arts Center after her. Armbrister was instrumental in saving the Ali Cultural Arts Center from demolition. The building, located at 353 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Blvd., is now designated a Registered Historic Landmark. Commissioner Tom McMahon made a motion during the April 27 Pompano Beach City Commission meeting to name the plaza after Armbrister, and the motion passed unanimously. In 2017, Armbrister was named the city’s historian. Armbrister was founder and president of the Rock Road Restoration Historical Group, which is housed in the Ali Cultural Arts Center, where she had an office. Armbrister was born in the town of Perry on the west coast of Florida. She lived in the Liberty Park neighborhood of Pompano Beach for over 60 years. Armbrister served on the city’s historic preservation committee and was chairperson of the cultural arts committee. She was a member and past president of both the Pompano Beach Woman’s Club and the Pompano Historical Society. She was also co-chair for the Pompano Centennial History Committee. McMahon said Armbrister was someone who fought for things, making stuff happen behind the scenes, “but didn’t want to be in the spotlight.” Armbrister was an advocate of black rights. In the 1960s, Armbrister took part in the “Wade In,” an effort to fight the segregation of Fort Lauderdale’s beaches. She

was deputized to register voters through the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. An early supporter of women’s rights, Armbrister served on the Broward County Commission on the Status of Women, the National Organization for Women, the National Women’s Political Caucus and the Broward County

Women’s History Coalition. Armbrister was recognized as a Broward County Pioneer and was inducted into the Broward County Women’s Hall of Fame in 2001 “We lost a true trailblazer,” said McMahon. Armbrister was one of the first students in Broward County to receive a GED certification. She later trained as a teachers’ aide at the University of South Florida, where she earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree. She taught school in Dade and Broward Counties for 31 years. In Pompano, she taught at Sanders Park Elementary and Charles Drew Elementary. “She was an amazing person,” said McMahon. “I was honored to meet her, and I’m excited to preserve her legacy.” Y

Pompano Beach CRA Unveils Master Plan for McNab House & Botanical Gardens A master plan for the McNab House and Botanical Gardens project at McNab Park was unveiled last month during a virtual community input meeting hosted by the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). The interactive meeting was led by the McNab House and Botanical Gardens project architects, Bermello Ajamil & Partners (BA). BA designed the conceptual master plan based on feedback from an initial community input meeting that was held via Zoom in December 2020. In March 2020, the Pompano Beach CRA relocated the historic McNab House and detached garage from 1736 E. Atlantic Blvd. to McNab Park, just five blocks east, with the vision of transforming the structures into a new restaurant facility and the surrounding park into a public botanical garden. During the presentation of the master plan, Randy Hollingsworth, the lead architect for BA, took attendees of the virtual meeting on a “walk” through the gardens and explained all the components. The McNab House, built in 1926, sits at the northeast corner of the site. As per the master plan, once the house becomes a restaurant, it will have several areas for outdoor dining, all focused on a lake feature. One of the most important aspects of the project is a large ficus tree located behind the McNab House, said Hollingsworth. The plan is to create an island around the tree’s base and center the tree on a lake that has a maximum depth of roughly 18 inches. The lake may include a large fountain. “This will become a focal point of the entire gardens as you walk

around,” said Hollingsworth. To the west of the McNab House lies the garage, which will become a bar. The space between the house and the garage will be a courtyard with exterior seating and direct access to the gardens. The house has three levels that will be connected with elevators and stairs. The second floor will have private dining areas and storage for the outdoor bar. A wine bar and restrooms will be on the basement level. A kitchen facility will be constructed directly south of the house, about eight feet from the structure itself. The seating capacity for the restaurant is expected to be between 150 and 200 seats, which includes both interior and exterior seating. The main entrance gate of the botanical gardens will be on SE 22nd Avenue, on the west side of the site. There will also be a north entry from Atlantic Boulevard. A primary walkway will take visitors around the entire garden, while several side paths will lead to individual gardens, each with a theme that has yet to be decided. At the southwest corner of the

site, in what is called the “West Gardens,” there will be a teahouse/ garden café situated on an upper terrace lake, which may include a waterfall. A stream with a footbridge will connect this lake to the large lake around the ficus tree. The “East Gardens” will be at the southeast corner of the site. Side paths through the various gardens will be marked with information identifying the different types of plants and trees. Between the East Gardens and the large lake is the central lawn — a big, open space that can be used for various events. An event pavilion will be located on the site’s eastern edge, overlooking the large lake and the central lawn. The pavilion will have an interior space that can be used for weddings, community meetings, classes and other events and activities. It will also have an outdoor dining area. Events can use the McNab House kitchen or other facilities for catering services. At the northwest corner of the site will be the children’s garden with a playground, a classroom facility where children can learn about plants, and adjacent restrooms for

visitors to the park. “We think it’s a really exciting part of the project,” said Hollingsworth. “This is an opportunity to create a unique component for families to come and enjoy.” The southern end of the site will have a small maintenance area with storage for gardening equipment, and a small parking area for some of the staff, which will be “wellhidden from the adjacent street.” Public art will be incorporated throughout the gardens, which could include both permanent and temporary art installations around the large lake. “During a special event, we could introduce a major piece of art into the lake itself,” said Hollingsworth. The artwork in the gardens would come from “all different types of artists,” said Hollingsworth. “There’s such a great opportunity to introduce local and national artists to a facility such as this, because the setting is so spectacular.” The existing trees on the approximately 3-acre site will be preserved as much as possible, and there are plans to incorporate some of the trees that were on the original site of the McNab House. The plan is to set up a conservancy to run the botanical gardens and also to do fundraising, said Pompano Beach CRA Director Nguyen Tran. “We’d love volunteers to come in and help operate the garden, volunteers who could work in the gardens themselves,” said Hollingsworth. “We certainly want to reach out to the community and get them involved wherever we can.” The botanical gardens will be a public park, so the intent is not to charge an admission fee. While no opening hours have been set yet, the gardens may be lit up at night, which would provide an opportunity to have some nighttime events, said Tran.

During the virtual community meeting, some attendees expressed concern that the project doesn’t have sufficient parking. Currently, the plan includes 35 on-street parking spaces around the site. Tran noted that the CRA owns property on the west side of SE 22nd Avenue, across from the main gate of the botanical gardens, which will be developed as a parking area. In April, the city implemented a free on-demand shuttle service, called Pompano Circuit. The service, which transports residents and visitors via electric golf cart to destinations in the beach area and along Atlantic Boulevard, as far west as the botanical gardens site, should help alleviate parking issues, said Tran. “We realized that as this project develops and attracts people, we

want to make sure that it doesn’t put pressure on the adjacent neighborhood,” said Tran. Tran added that there are ongoing discussions with adjacent property owners to purchase more land that could be used for parking and replace the existing amenities in McNab Park, including a basketball court and a tennis court, that will be removed when the botanical gardens are constructed. Several residents who attended the virtual meeting voiced concern

about the potential of vagrancy and homelessness in the new gardens, which have been persistent issues at McNab Park. Tran said the botanical gardens project is “not to take care of the vagrancy and homeless issues,” but is rather “an economic development project.” The issue that McNab Park is encountering now, is that “it’s a very passive park in an urban setting,” said Tran. “When the public doesn’t use the park that often, you have these issues that do come up.” “This redevelopment of the park is the CRA’s initiative to activate pretty much a dead space on Atlantic Boulevard,” said Tran. “This is a prime commercial boulevard. Our goal is to make it better.” Tran compared the botanical gardens project to the redevelopment of the beachside and the pier area. “The CRA got involved and enhanced the beach, and look at it now,” said Tran. “This is really the same concept.” Tran said the CRA is getting ready to solicit a letter of interest for a restaurant operator, who will help with the plans to convert the McNab House into a restaurant. The BA design team will develop the building concepts for the event pavilion, the teahouse and the restrooms. It will take several years to carry out the botanical gardens project. “This is a significant effort,” said Hollingsworth. “This is going to be unlike anything the city has ever built.” Tran described the project as “transformative” and “one of the most exciting projects that we have done.” Y JUNE 2021 • pointpubs.com

Mexican Restaurant at Pompano Beach Fishing Village Is Moving Forward Baresco, a Mexican restaurant planned for a currently vacant parcel in the Pompano Beach Fishing Village, continues to make progress as it goes through the Pompano’s approval process. The restaurant will be located at 250 N. Pompano Beach Blvd., west of the pier. Baresco is being developed by Brimstone Restaurant Group, which opened the Beach House restaurant, just across the street, in 2018. Andy Fox, operating partner of Brimstone Restaurant Group, expects the restaurant to open in August 2022, Baresco will occupy a one-story building with roughly 6,700 square feet of interior space (200 seats) and a 2,957-square-foot covered patio (about 150 seats). The interior space includes a 40-seat private dining room that would be used for parties and other events, or for normal business if no private function is planned. There will be two full bars — one inside, one outside. The outside will have a small fireplace. The restaurant will be open for

breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. Baresco “won’t be a traditional Mexican restaurant,” said Fox. The scratch-made kitchen will feature fresh fish and seafood with a Mexican flair. The menu will also feature tacos, pizzas, quesadillas, fajitas and fresh-made guacamole. The plan is to have about 10 beers and seven wines on tap. Margaritas made with freshly-squeezed juices would also be on tap.

Breakfast options will include huevos rancheros and eggs Benedict with a Mexican twist, said Fox. There will be garage doors on the east side of the restaurant, facing the beach, so in nice weather, the interior space can be made open-air. New Waterfront Restaurant Planned for Taha Marine Property is Making Progress A new waterfront restaurant that will be located along the Intracoastal, at the northeast corner of the Atlantic Boulevard Bridge, is continuing to make its way through the city’s approval process. The owners of Taha Marine Center are transforming an existing 2,460-square-foot commercial building into an oyster bar and fresh seafood restaurant. A new 2,800-square-foot covered outdoor dining area with a freestanding bar will be added. The Taha Marine boat fuel dock that has been in service for over 50 years will remain. The tropical, Old Florida building design and lush landscaping plans were met with approval by the Architectural Appearance Committee in May. The restaurant building may include an exterior mural similar to the artwork on the Atlantic Boulevard Bridge. A 421-square-foot restroom building will be added to the south end of the restaurant building. The owners of Taha Marine Center also own the 11,622-squarefoot retail building located at 3157-3231 E. Atlantic Boulevard, just east of the marine center. There are plans to carry out exterior renovations to the retail establishment, which will tie in the colors of the restaurant building. Y

The Residual Covid Effect BY JILL SELBACH

EVERYONE IS EXPERIENCING COVID-19 FATIGUE. HOWEVER, I COULD NOT HELP BUT WRITE ABOUT THE EFFECT this pandemic has on young people and education. Developmentally, young people need socialization, independence from parents and connection with others their age. In my practice, I hear concerns from kids and teens that are not the norm. They are thinking about serious issues, and some have a very pessimistic view of the world's future and their own future. I see nihilistic thinking for reasons that are very different than I saw in the past. Milestones are have been missed for all age groups. School is for social, emotional and academic development. Online learning has posed many difficulties for children and parents from kindergarten to graduate school. Students are not gaining the knowledge that they did in years past. Unfortunately, I believe we will pay the price in the following years. An August 2020 Washington Post article by Alice Kuo and Casey Nagel cited that kids not regularly attending school has led to one out of every three elementary students losing skills in reading and writing. Aside from the meager academic gains, many students are also suffering socially. According to the Sun Sentinel, South Florida public schools have experienced difficulty tracking attendance for remote learners. The highest absenteeism seems to be at the high school level. Even with schools open, the number of students who have chosen to return is low, especially at the high school level. My husband is a Broward County public high school teacher, and this year he averages about six kids attending in person in each of his six math classes. His observation is that kids are not learning online, "It's a disaster." In his almost 30 years of teaching, he has never seen such a lack of gains in math skills over a school year. Kids are ever-growing, and the isolation they have experienced, parental stress, lack of exercise, and increased screen time has

taken a toll on the natural milestones that occur at certain stages of life. For instance, preschoolers learn to explore the world at a distance from their caregivers, school-aged kids build confidence by mastering educational concepts, and adolescents develop their sense of personal identity and interpersonal skills. These crucial skills are hard to achieve sitting in front of a computer screen. Excessive screen time and isolation were already a challenge before Covid-19, and now it's an even more significant problem. Kids are more anxious and depressed thinking about serious issues instead of what game they will play, their outfit, or the new relationship they will pursue. Many psychologists cannot keep up with the demand, myself being one of them. It is important to address issues if you see symptoms, especially if your child asks for help. Symptoms may be nervousness, an increase or decrease in sleep or appetite, declining to see friends when there is an opportunity, lack of enjoyment of something they used to enjoy and less communication with family. The public school district does have free counseling services that are open to all residents regardless of where your child attends school. What to Celebrate – and Ignore – in June BY DAWNE RICHARDS APPARENTLY, JUNE IS WHEN WE CELEBRATE MANY THINGS. ACCORDING TO THE BALANCE, “SINCE FATHER'S DAY FALLS IN JUNE, IT MAKES sense that June also is Men's Health Month.” When writing this, I thought, “Aha! I bet May, which contains Mother’s Day, isn’t Women’s Health Month.” Alas, I was wrong. I mostly ignored my health—and Mother's Day—in May. Mother’s Day is, as a former boss once put it, a holiday not to be observed because “I don’t do greeting-card holidays.” You may think that’s a little harsh. Sorry, not sorry. But I digress. And this time, I’ve digressed so far that I’ve lost my original point. Oh! I remember! Back to that piece in The Balance. (Have you already forgotten? I almost did. See above.) According to the article, other things celebrated in June include “soul food, steakhouses, and country cooking,” along with, of all things, turkey. Why we celebrate turkey in June and not November is a mystery for the ages or at least one that I'm too lazy to research. Anyway, If you're flummoxed by the truly important "celebrations" in June, here are my two completely biased lists.

INGREDIENTS

2 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 yellow onions, chopped 3 celery stalks, thinly sliced 1 green bell pepper, chopped 1 red bell pepper, chopped 6 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, chopped 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour 3 cups chicken or vegetable stock 2 15-ounce cans diced tomatoes 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 tablespoon paprika 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or more to taste Kosher salt and black pepper 1 pound smoked andouille sausage, sliced (optional) 1 1/2 pounds shrimp, peeled and deveined 4-5 scallions, green parts chopped White rice, for serving

PREPARATION

In a Dutch oven, melt the butter with the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion, celery and bell pepper, and cook until softened, about 7-10 minutes. Add the garlic and thyme and cook until you can smell the garlic, about 1 minute. Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables. Stir the flour into the vegetables and cook constantly stirring for about 5 minutes. Add in the stock and the diced tomatoes. Cook until everything is warmed through, about 5 minutes. Add the oregano, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Add the sliced sausage if using. Bring to a boil, and cook until the mixture starts to thicken, about 2 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium and add the shrimp on top. Let the shrimp float on top for about two minutes and then flip them. Cook the shrimp until they are opaque and pink. Remove from the heat and stir the shrimp into the sauce. Taste and add salt and pepper if needed. Serve over white rice and garnish with sliced scallions. Serve with hot sauce for those who like it hot!

TIP

If you want the sauce to be thicker, mash together 2 tablespoons of very soft room temperature unsalted butter with 2 tablespoons of flour until it forms a paste. Stir the mixture into the sauce. The sauce will thicken as it simmers. And of course, if you want to thin it out, add more water or stock. Y

Its purpose is to raise awareness, especially among youth, of the importance of keeping oceans and reefs healthy and thriving in an entertaining, educational way.

The Wahoo Bay project involves creating marine life habitat inside a half-acre area of the Hillsboro Inlet, along the southerly seawall of the Hillsboro Inlet Park. In this area, snorkelers will be able to explore and learn about the marine environment. Shipwreck Park, a not-for-profit organization, is behind the Wahoo Bay project, working in collaboration with the City of Pompano Beach, Broward County and several educational institutions. The City owns the Hillsboro Inlet Park and acquired the submerged lands where Wahoo Bay will be located in December 2019. “We are establishing a mini-marine sanctuary right in Pompano, in northern Broward County,” said Rob Wyre,

chairman of Shipwreck Park. “There are no other projects of this type in the area.” According to its mission statement, Shipwreck Park is dedicated to the creation of an underwater park system establishing artificial reefs, and using public art to raise awareness of the need to preserve and conserve the natural coral reef system. Shipwreck Park sank two vessels off the coast of Pompano Beach — the Lady Luck tanker in 2016 and the Okinawa, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers tugboat, in 2017 — to create an artificial reef system. Wahoo Bay “is really the education component of our mission,” said Wyre. The idea for the project originated in 2017 as a result of a strategic planning

session that was held after the sinking of the Lady Luck, said Wyre. “We realized that deploying artificial reefs was good for the environment,” said Wyre. “It attracted a lot of attention, but it was really only visible to divers and fishermen.” “We came to the conclusion that one of the best things we could do moving forward would be to concentrate on education and raising the awareness of the general public about the importance of artificial reefs, natural reefs and what’s going on in our world in terms of sea rise and resiliency,” said Wyre. Wahoo Bay will have a particular focus on educating youth “because they are the ones that are inheriting this world,” said Wyre. The marine park will be a place where students can come on scheduled field trips to have an underwater educational experience. The target group is students in grades K-12. “We want to get them involved at an early age to make sure they understand how important the underwater habitat is to our everyday life, from the reef system to our shorelines, to the mangroves that create a first line of resiliency,” said Tom DiGiorgio, chairman of the Economic Development Council of Pompano Beach, and a board member of Shipwreck Park. Creation of the marine park includes installation of an innovative modular shoreline protection system, called SEAHIVE, which was developed by the University of Miami. The plan for SEAHIVE at Wahoo Bay is to construct six, 20-foot-long modules in

the water along the existing seawall. Each module would consist of 36 perforated hexagonal tubes, with mangroves planted on top, providing an eco-friendly environment for marine life. The SEAHIVE will also protect infrastructure and the environment from flooding, erosion and impact from waves.. The SEAHIVE elements, made with seawater concrete and non-corrosive reinforcements, allow water flow under surging or breaking

waves, dissipating the wave energy within the elements. The SEAHIVE at Wahoo Bay will be one of the University of Miami’s first applications of the system. Experts from the University of Miami will help with the planting of the mangroves in the SEAHIVE, and will study their performance. Mangroves are a vital component of the JUNE 2021 • pointpubs.com

This seagrass is now protected from further disturbance by jet skis, props and anchors with the enactment of the swim-only ordinance. To make certain that Wahoo Bay is a safe area to swim, studies were conducted related to the currents, and the results were favorable, said Wyre.

RAISING AWARENESS THROUGH UNDERWATER ART The Wahoo Bay project includes plans to deploy a number of artificial reef modules, possibly 14, which measure two feet to four feet in diameter. These reef modules will be pieces of underwater public art that are “very unique in structure” and “will be fun to take your picture with,” said DiGiorgio. “Public art is always a big part of what we do to raise awareness,” said DiGiorgio. The reef modules will be designed in a way that encourages coral growth and marine life habitat. In addition, underwater public art will be attached to the six SEAHIVE components.

the water from outside the boundary of the swim area, which will be cordoned off, or from a regulated swim platform, which will be built next to the existing dock at the Hillsboro Inlet Park. For supervised, scheduled school field trips, an age-appropriate educational curriculum will be developed so students can discuss what they see at the marine park, as well as real-world marine issues. The hope is to build the curriculum with the help of the University of Miami and local instructors who live in Pompano Beach. Students, teachers and families will also be able to experience Wahoo Bay virtually. The marine sanctuary will be equipped with live action underwater cameras, weather devices and water quality monitoring systems for collecting data, which will be uploaded for analysis to the Wahoo Bay website, currently under development. The data will allow changes at Wahoo Bay to be tracked over time. The website will include a marine science and educational curriculum.

HOW MUCH WILL THE PROJECT COST?

How soon construction can begin on Wahoo Bay is dependent on being able to raise the funds necessary to install the SEAHIVE and build the swim platform. “We hope to have our permits for the swim platform and buoys this summer, but as far as a completion date, we’re not that far along yet to make that prediction,” said Wyre. The Wahoo Bay project will be carried out in several phases. The first phase — which includes the swim platform, the SEAHIVE, the buoys to protect the swim area, and some of the data collection – is estimated to cost approximately $600,000. The next phase will involve putting the artwork in the water, followed by JUNE 2021 • pointpubs.com

installing all the monitoring systems for long-term data collection, establishing the virtual curriculum, and, depending on the availability of funding, adding some educational components on land, such as interactive educational displays. All of this could cost roughly another $600,000. “We have some serious fundraising to do,” said Wyre.

A VIRTUAL WORLD DESTINATION

It is hoped that once the Wahoo Bay site is developed and fully vetted, the concept of the in-water experience can be replicated in other locations throughout Florida, the country and the world.

As for the virtual content that is being created, “we hope it reaches the masses throughout the globe, not just here in Broward County, which is fantastic on its own,” said DiGiorgio. Partnerships have already been established with the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and the MarineLab education center in Key Largo. The two organizations will be collaborating with Wahoo Bay to deploy similar underwater data collection devices and cameras at two sites — one in the Kissimmee River, where Guy Harvey has a location, and one in the Largo Sound. “That will give us three great data points in Florida to look at water quality

Anyone who wants to participate in the creation of Wahoo Bay through a donation can go to the Wahoo Bay website (wahoobay.org). One hundred percent of the donation will go towards the project, as Shipwreck Park has no overhead costs, said DiGiorgio.

WHERE WILL THE FUNDING COME FROM? Broward County recently obtained a $50,000 grant from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) on behalf of the Wahoo Bay project. The County was awarded the grant because the FWC “is very interested in seeing how the SEAHIVE system will work,” said Wyre. On behalf of the City of Pompano Beach and Shipwreck Park, the University of Miami has applied for a $200,000 grant from the Sea Grant program, which the University of Florida administers. If the grant application is successful, the money would be used for the deployment of the SEAHIVE at the Wahoo Bay shoreline. Other funding for the project is expected to come from private donations. “We’re going to have to lean on the private sector to help us get this thing funded,” said Wyre, “just like we did with the deployment of

both the Lady Luck and the Okinawa.” In addition to donations from private individuals, corporate sponsorships will be sought with companies that share Shipwreck Park’s mission of conservation through education. There will be different levels of participation for companies, including major sponsorships for the virtual education components and the data collection components, as well as sponsorships for the underwater artwork on the SEAHIVE. Once Wahoo Bay is established, there will be ongoing expenses, such as providing life safety for the people physically visiting the park, and maintaining the underwater cameras and sampling devices. “It’s a long-term support that’s going to be needed to continue to make Wahoo Bay successful,” said Wyre.
