Creatively Speaking

Repurpose 2020 BY SUSAN ROSSER A wise woman once said, “You can pretty much throw anything in an egg roll wrapper, roll it up, fry it, and it will be extraordinary.” OK, I admit that woman was me. But that little morsel of culinary wisdom has turned out to be even more insightful than I ever imagined. Let me explain. Back in August, my husband and I planned to drive up to Washington, D.C. to take our youngest daughter to college for her freshman year. The university had put many safeguards in place to ensure the move-in process would be as safe as possible in the middle of a global pandemic. But alas, sometime in August came that dreaded email announcing the fall semester would be conducted online. And only a tiny fraction of students with extenuating circumstances would be offered oncampus housing. To say my daughter was disappointed would be an understatement. After missing the end of her senior year, graduation, prom, summer plans and more… heading off to college was that one last nugget of normalcy. And now that was gone too. Yet, she is resolute and determined to learn. She set up her older brother’s vacant room as her office for the semester. (He is away at college.) She ordered a new desk chair and a shabby chic area rug to spruce up the space. She is an excellent student, and her motivation to succeed amidst less than ideal circumstances is inspiring. So we planned and hoped for a spring semester on campus. We talked about our drive up in January. Every now and then, when I would go into our office closet, I would see her stash of dorm room supplies temporarily stored there, and I would feel a tinge of sadness for all that she is missing. But still, there was the hope of spring. And then one Friday afternoon, she plunked herself down on the couch and delivered the awful news. The university announced that the spring semester would also be online. Her hopes dashed again. But what suddenly occurred to me is that while I knew what a complete let down this time has been for

POINT! PUBLISHING

my daughter, I needed to see this as an opportunity. Full disclosure — she is my youngest, and I was somewhat dreading life as an empty nester. The next few months may be the last time I get to live under the same roof as my daughter. I must make something memorable out of our time together. Typically, if one of my kids was going through a rough time — like say, missing your freshman year of college — I would try to make up for it. I might plan a trip or some other adventure. But in the middle of the COVID crisis, our options are severely limited. Travel is certainly off the table, while other options are simply out of my price range. A month in Monaco sounds fantastic but expensive. And then I remembered the egg roll recipe featured in this issue’s Creatively Cooking column along with my deeply held belief that anything — even lowly leftovers — is transformed above their station when fried within the confines of the simple egg roll wrapper. I need to take this time of mounting disappointments and remodel it into something meaningful. In short, I need to deep fry this crappy year until it is pleasingly golden. Of course, I have no clue yet how I will accomplish this daunting task. Over the summer, I instituted family happy hours — hoping my kids would remember their cool mom who mixes an exceptional margarita instead of a summer of lonely doom and gloom. I suspect any or all of my attempts may pale in comparison to spending freshmen year living and studying in D.C.’s Foggy Bottom neighborhood. But I am determined to repurpose this year of disappointment. And even if I’m not successful, hopefully, my daughter will look back on this time and recall not everything she missed, but rather her zany mother who, for reasons unexplained, was always frying up some egg rolls. Virtual Exhibitions Featuring the Space Shuttle Challenger INTO ORBIT AND FIRST FLEET PROVIDE DRAMATIC PHOTOS AND INSIGHTS

The new Netflix documentary, “Challenger: The Final Flight” has become one of the most watched shows on the service, leading to news stories across the nation about the inspiring and emotional fourpart series. For those captivated by the program, Pompano Beach Arts offers three provocative virtual programs that provide dramatic insights about the space program. The Into Orbit Exhibition features photographs of the late astronaut Ronald McNair who perished in Challenger and the First Fleet Exhibition includes a visually stunning photo display and conversation with photographer John Chakeres, whose photographs were showcased in the Netflix documentary. Visit pompanobeacharts.org/ virtual-events. “The Netflix series is mesmerizing the nation and generating more interest in the space program,” said Phyllis Korab, Cultural Affairs Director. “We are very proud to have these

exhibitions at our venues, and while we are still currently closed due to COVID-19, through our virtual programming, we are able to bring these fascinating exhibitions to life in a dynamic and inspiring fashion.”

FIRST FLEET ARTIST TALK WITH JOHN CHAKERES

Pompano Beach Arts Curatorial Consultant Juliana Forero hosts a candid conversation with world-renowned photographer John Chakeres, who captured the early years of the space shuttle program with a dazzling array of art-focused shots of The Challenger, Discovery and Columbia. Chakeres takes viewers through his remarkable journey from an Ansel Adams protégé to a global innovator in the photographic realm. His shots of the early years of the space shuttle program were dramatically different from other photographers as his focus was on the artistic aspects of the spacecraft and the powerful imagery of launches and landings. Throughout the conversation, Chakeres shares how he captured the acclaimed photos using specially developed equipment and the stories behind different shots. He also opens up about how the loss of the Challenger affected him. Having put the space shuttle program photos away for decades, he has recently launched his book, “First Fleet “and is sharing what the program meant to him.

FIRST FLEET EXHIBITION SNEAK PEEK

Juliana Forero takes viewers inside the Pompano Beach Cultural Center for an up-close look at the photos John Chakeres took of the spacecraft during the Space Shuttle program’s early years. Forero also details the artistic elements of two critical images in the collection, providing viewers with stellar insights into each shot’s artistic vision.

Superior Results for Hip and Knee Surgery Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice

My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the first phone call, you will find my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs.

Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery

My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient.

Caring for Patients of All Ages

I care for people in their 80’s and 90’s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20’s and 30’s who desire an improved “quality of life” and want to feel “normal” again.

“Dr. Leone put my body back together. I was a longtime runner and now at 83-years-old all my pain is finally gone!” ~Tracey M, full and partial knee replacement patient

“I will forever be grateful to Dr. Leone, and his amazing staff at Holy Cross. I can honestly say Dr. Leone is the most kind, patient, incredible doctor I have ever met. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.” ~Liyah, Pop Star 32 years old, total hip replacement patient

How to Help Kids Survive Homeschooling As kids are now well into the new school year, whether virtually or in person, many students face anxiety and apprehension, according to Ali Kaufman, founder of Space of Mind, a modern schoolhouse. For some students, particularly those in younger grades, learning virtually is challenging. “Sitting in front of a screen all day, without personal

interaction and experiential learning, kids are not able to learn effectively. They are coming off of the weirdest months of their lives. They are out of their routine.” said Ms. Kaufman. “As parents, we want our kids to strive to be their best, but right now, kids need to feel safe and in some control. Here are steps parents can take to help their kids.”

FORM A POD. Partner with other families to form a small group of peers for your children. A small group has less risk and will provide your kids with socialization and opportunities for experiential learning.

5

MOVE THROUGHOUT THE DAY. Kids should migrate

about the house and work in different rooms, say from the kitchen to the living room, so they do not lose focus and become bored.

6 7

DON’T WORRY ABOUT GRADES. Right now, enjoying

the process of learning is more critical than grades. BE EASY ON YOURSELF.

Parents are juggling work while overseeing their kids’ schoolwork, and many have their own worries about the economy. Kids pick up on their parents’ stress, so go easy on yourself.

8

GO EASY ON THE TEACHERS. They, too, are

doing their best, managing two dozen kids via a screen. And those who are teaching in person are worried about their own health. Please have patience with them.

2

DON’T SECOND GUESS YOUR KIDS. For children

who have returned to in-person classrooms, leave monitoring safety procedures to the school. When kids come home, they do not need to be grilled about social distancing and mask wearing. Interrogating them might add to their anxiety.

Well-meaning parents are transforming areas of their home into virtual learning spaces, but they have taken the creativity and autonomy away from the student. Let the students have a say in their space. (See this month’s Creatively Speaking column.)

It Dawned on Me

Oops! I Did it Again BY DAWNE RICHARDS

ALERT READERS MAY RECALL MY “ADVENTUROUS” TRIP TO MY FINANCIAL ADVISERS’ OFFICE WITH three cats in tow. (If this weren’t 2020, I might know what month that column appears in, but given the way this year has gone, it might even have been in 2019). But I digress, as usual. And here’s another digression: My daughter was entering seventh (?) grade (whatever! It was middle school). We attended parent night; Charlotte introduced us to her English teacher. Maybe it’s called “language arts” now, but whatever; I’m old and tend to digress. Charlotte mentioned that her teacher’s cat had had kittens that were up for adoption. “Oh,” I said. “Sorry, sweetie, but we already have two cats. And you know what I always say…two cats make you a cat person. Three make you a cat lady.” I got the Death Glare, but wasn’t sure why: was it because I said “No” or because I dared to speak at all? (You remember middle school, right? “Mom, please drop me off four miles from school, and make sure no one sees you.”) Well. The Death Glare was explicitly related to my exact words; it turns out her teacher had something like five adult cats. “Thanks, Mom!” she hissed (sounding, although I didn’t dare say this out loud, like a cat herself. “I’m now guaranteed to fail English Language Arts thanks to you.” Oh, well. Another in the many missteps of parenting. Whatever! The things my mother did were 1,000 times more embarrassing, like the time she… But I digress again. Anyway, as I mentioned (and alert readers might recall), we have three cats. Well, we had three cats, until today. Now we have... four. This isn’t my fault, really! No, I blame Facebook, that cesspool of adorable animals up for adoption. I particularly blame Beyond

Nine Cat Rescue, one of the many fine local organizations whose undying dedication to saving our furry friends is boundless. Beyond Nine is great at the “heartstring-tugging” posts. Here’s the one that did me in: “Sweet Cleo doesn’t understand why she hasn’t found a forever home. She’s a beautiful, declawed 6-year-old that’s so loving. Her owner died and a very nice lady is fostering her, but that ladies cats don’t like her. She is safe but would love a family of her own. Please share sweet Cleo & help us find her a forever home.” “Oh!” I thought, “the horror! That poor, poor kitty. Surely someone (me) can adopt her.” I mean, her teenage years are a distant memory (like mine), she’s a little curvier than she probably should be (like me) – it was fate! Destiny! It was...cat lady time! And, to confirm, while writing this, my mother-in-law responded to Cleo’s picture with “Adorable! You have now passed from cat lover to cat lady!” As of this writing, Cleo is safely ensconced (hiding) in my bedroom, which now bears a striking resemblance to the inside of a kitty rescue facility. But whatever! I’ve retroactively written my life goals to include “become a stereotype in your third third.” Y

Creatively Cooking

Thanksgiving Eggrolls BY MRS. KOSSENFLOFFER

STEP UP YOUR LEFTOVERS GAME Arguably, the best part of Thanksgiving is the leftovers. But if you’re anything like me, by day three, you’ve had your fill of open-face turkey sandwiches. But you can pretty much put any Thanksgiving leftovers inside an eggroll wrapper, roll it, fry it, and you will have a rich and savory treat with that perfect amount of crunch. I filled my eggrolls with turkey, stuffing, mashed sweet potatoes and green beans. The leftover gravy and cranberry sauce functioned as excellent dipping options. Honestly, these were such a hit; I think I’ve landed on a new family tradition.

DIRECTIONS

Retrieve all of your leftovers and put them all out on the counter. Decide what you want to stuff inside your egg rolls. Each wrapper holds about 2 tablespoons of filling. Be careful not to overfill. It is tempting, and I’ve done it. It’s not pretty. Luckily directions for rolling the eggrolls are on the back of the package. I like to fry them. Heat a large, deep skillet and add enough canola oil to reach at least halfway up the eggrolls. Of course, you can go total deep fry on these babies, but the skillet option works well too. Turn the eggrolls a few times, so they brown evenly. Don’t step away. They cook quickly. You can also bake them in a 400-degree oven. Just brush with oil, place them on a rimmed baking sheet and bake for 10 to 12 minutes until golden brown. Serve with your leftover gravy and cranberry sauce on the side. Plan to make extra gravy. These babies are worth it. Y

Try the Wine

Wine for Thanksgiving KEEP IT SIMPLE BUT DELICIOUS BY DAVID EHRENFRIED

MAYBE YOU’RE WONDERING, “IS THIS GOING TO BE ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE ARTICLES ABOUT PICKING WINE FOR THANKSGIVING THAT’S GOING TO TELL ME HOW I’VE BEEN getting things wrong all these years? Will it recommend buying a bunch of snobby, expensive, and hard to find wines?” Hopefully, it doesn't come off that way. Whether your plan for this year's Thanksgiving is a celebration for two or twenty, my suggestions for selecting wine are fairly simple. It’s your Thanksgiving after all, and you shouldn’t feel pressured to pick wine that you sense you or your guests won’t like or that won’t add to the unique vibe of your holiday dinner. My objective is to offer sensible suggestions to add to your Thanksgiving dinner enjoyment.

I want to be mindful, too, that this Thanksgiving will be different for many of us. The coronavirus may well put the kibosh, or at least a mindful crimp, on our ability to gather safely. My wife and I, for example, are playing it by ear for now. We don’t expect to travel to my oldest son’s home in Massachusetts as in recent years to celebrate with his family, brothers, and other guests. We're still figuring things out and will make the best of whatever we decide. The plan still is for outstanding food and wine plus a virtual gathering via Zoom if we're apart.

Thanksgiving Wine Basics My philosophy about holiday dinners is that food and company should take center stage with good wine complementing those pleasures. Showcasing or putting wine front and center on such occasions can lead to disappointment as easily as triumph. The wine itself can turn out not to be as impressive as we anticipated. Or it might get little notice, which can happen when people are focused on the food and people around them. Better, perhaps, to serve good, easy drinking wine that “goes with the flow,” so to speak. Consider straightforward, quality wines that you and your guest(s) will enjoy and that pair nicely with turkey and a mix of side dishes. Generally, that means serving lighter dry red and white wines like pinot noir and sauvignon blanc, as opposed to bolder and heavier (more alcoholic) wines like cabernet sauvignon and rich, oaky and buttery chardonnay. An alternative or accompanying wine could be a favorite or special-occasion dry sparkling wine, such as French Champagne, Italian prosecco, Spanish cava, or American sparkling wine. Quality sparkling wines are festive, tasty and usually go well with everything served at a traditional Thanksgiving meal. And if you’re up to a little something extra for dessert consider serving some Port, madeira, sauterne, or late harvest (sweet) riesling. In last November’s column, I suggested serving American-made wines to emphasize Thanksgiving as a uniquely American holiday. That, however, cuts out a world of wines that may include your favorites. Whatever their origins, serving at least one white and one red wine or, if you’re having a crowd, multiple choices of each adds to the fun. Consider opening each white and red from the start so everyone can try what they want. Don’t toss out the corks or caps. Good wine leftovers, even sparkling wine, will usually keep for two or three days if re-closed tightly and kept in a refrigerator or a cool place. Close sparkling wines securely with a regular wine cork. They should retain some of their prickly effervescence. If you’re tempted to trot out a robust California cabernet sauvignon or an expensive French Bordeaux, appreciate that these wines can overpower or clash with traditional Thanksgiving foods. Cabernet sauvignon and merlot grapes' principal ingredients yield extensive mouth-coating tannins that can make these wines astringent, especially when served within five years of their vintage dates. Big bold California cabs, in particular, also tend to be quite alcoholic, with alcohol-by-volume (ABV) levels >>>

Wine Choices for Thanksgiving So how does one pick among the myriad of lighter dry red, white and sparkling wines? There are so many choices in nearly every price category from so many places. Recognizing that budgets vary, I'll focus on some specific wines selling between $15 and $65 a bottle, which is a good range for both quality and value. If you’re having many people for Thanksgiving, you might pick at the lower end of the spectrum. For a small group, you might want to spend more for something very special or exceptional. SPARKLING WINE: If I were to open only one bottle of wine for Thanksgiving, my first choice would be a good sparkling wine. It’s cheery, tasty, feels special, and complements the turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, and other vegetables beautifully. My favorites are French Champagne, quality sparkling wine from California, and prosecco. Unfortunately, French Champagne has gotten pretty pricey, made worse by the 25% tariffs now levied on most wines imported from France and certain other European countries. Excellent brands like Moet & Chandon, Piper Heidsieck, Perrier & Jouet, Bollinger, and Pol Roger, among others, now usually cost $40 and up, with vintage Champagnes often selling for over $100. There are some splendid ones like Montaudon and Moutard that sell for $25-$35. Outside France’s Champagne region, there many delicious but less costly sparklers such as Blanc de Blanc from Burgundy and Cremant from Alcase. Fortunately, there are numerous delicious California and other sparkling wines that cost significantly less than most Champagne. California and Oregon sparklers made by Argyle, Schramsberg, J Vineyards, Chandon, Roederer, and Mumm sell mostly in the $15-$35 range. Other alternatives to consider are Italian prosecco or Spanish cava. For prosecco, some notable producers include La Marca, Nino Franco, Le Colture, Bisol and Mionetto. Generally, the best are labeled Valdobbiadene. For cava, look for the Cordorniu, Juve Y Camps, Freixenet, El Cep, and Campo Viejo brands. Finally, inquire about Gruet sparkling wine from New Mexico, which I think is amazing considering it’s often priced under $15. REDS: There are two particular kinds of red wine with just the right substantive but easy-drinking characteristics for Thanksgiving meals. One is pinot noir wines from Oregon and California, although you may also want to seek out pinot noir from New Zealand and Burgundy, France. The other is French cru beaujolais,

a wine made from gamay grapes from specific French villages, such as Brouilly, Julienas, Morgan, Moulin-aVent, and Saint Amour. Beaujolais village wines are fuller and more flavorful than beaujolais nouveau, the very light gamay wine sold and consumed within a year of bottling. Both pinot noir and beaujolais wines generally have low ABV (usually under 13.5%), have attractive red fruit flavors, fresh acidity, and little tannic astringency, making the best well-balanced, food friendly, and easyto-drink. Many also are terrific values. Most cru beaujolais from France sells in the $15 to $30 range. Notable larger producers are George Duboef, Chateau de la Chaize, and Chermette labels, although there are many fine local producers. As for California and Oregon pinot noir wines, some producers I like are Argyle, A to Z, Chehalem, Castle Rock, Cherry Pie, J. Christopher, Erath, Evening Land, Gary Farrell, Four Graces, Hahn SLH, La Crema, Rex Hill, Roar, Sonoma-Loeb, Sojourn, and Walt. These wines sell in the $15-65 range. If you're not a fan of pinot noir or cru beaujolais, other good choices are California zinfandel blends (ideally 14% ABV or less), barbera or dolcetto d’Alba from Italy’s Piedmont region, or lighter French Rhone wines like Côtes-du-Rhone and rasteau. WHITES: I enjoy drinking good Chardonnay wine as much as anyone. Yet, for Thanksgiving I vote for lighter, crisper wines like pinot blanc or pinot gris, sauvignon blanc, riesling, or even Italian soave. They’re natural matches for a wide variety of poultry dishes. Their crisp freshness, racy acidity, and modest alcohol content, along with their citrus, apple, peach, apricot and other fruit flavors, complement and blend with the typical mixture of Thanksgiving food flavors and textures. Like Italian soave and sauvignon blanc-semillon blends, some of these wines also have a subtle but pleasant creaminess. Additionally, excellent bottles of all these wines are available in the $12-$30 from various producers. Look for any pinot blanc or pinot gris in this price range from Alsace or Oregon. For sauvignon blanc, I like Matua, Cloudy Bay, Greywacke, and Craggy Range from New Zealand, Mulderbosch from South Africa, and Honig, Chalk Hill, and Merry Edwards from California. For riesling, consider Kabinett or Spätlese wines from Germany’s Mosel or Nahe regions and dry American versions from the Forge, Ravines, Weimer, or Frank wineries in New York’s Finger Lakes region as well as from Chateau St. Michelle or Charles Smith Kung Fu Girl in Washington State. If you want to serve soave, look for Anselmi, Pieropan, Pra, or Tamellini. Y Send us a message, please, if you need help finding these wines or have other questions. You can also read more about some of these wines in recent issues of Lighthouse Point magazine at pointpubs.com. — sauvignon blanc (September), soave (August), zinfandel (March) and pinot noir (October 2019)— Have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving!

SACRED PEAKS, LUSH JUNGLES, INCA RUINS AND ROLLING SAND DUNES AWAIT ADVENTUROUS TRAVELERS IN PERU

PHOTOS AND TEXT BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU

T

he global pandemic has shown me that life, as we know it, is fragile. Faced with rapid changes to our lifestyles, and a sudden awareness of our own mortality, I think many of us have been inspired to reassess our visions. What are the dreams we once had that we have buried? What fantasies have we put away? What items on our bucket lists have remained unchecked for far too long? Have we really experienced the world and all it has to offer? Personally, I asked myself all these questions last year when I was faced with a different life-altering chapter — one that made me stop in my tracks and say, “Screw it. I’m not waiting to live my dreams anymore.” The decision to go travel came swiftly as I lay awake one morning at 3am. I scrambled for my laptop and impulsively booked a plane ticket to Peru, then secured a permit to hike the Inca trail to Machu Picchu. I had never really thought about visiting Machu Picchu before, but for some reason, as dawn approached that morning, the Andes mountains were calling my name.

THE INCA TRAIL

A few months later, standing on top of Huayna Picchu with my arms outstretched, overlooking the legendary 500-year-old ruins of an ancient Inca civilization, I experienced my mountaintop moment (a moment now pictured on the front of this magazine). In that moment I felt empowered, vibrantly alive and overwhelmed by gratitude. I had spent four days hiking the Inca trail — a 26-mile-long trek that takes hikers to the summits of several high peaks, through mountains and subtropical jungle, and traverses multiple Inca ruins and archaeological sites. The Inca Trail was rediscovered by an explorer named Hiram Bingham in 1915 during an expedition he took in search of the Lost City of the Incas. It is believed that the Inca Trail was a route of pilgrimage to Machu Picchu that was used by the Sapo Inca in the 15th century. The Incas are known to have revered nature as holy, so it is widely accepted that the route was used to perform religious rituals honoring the majestic peaks. The valley is thus aptly named, the Sacred Valley. And the experience of hiking through it most definitely feels sacred. If you’re interested and fit enough to hike the Inca Trail, I highly recommend the experience. I took the trek with Alpacca Expeditions, but there are many companies to choose from that operate in a similar manner. Since some of you may have no idea what a trek like this entails, I will elaborate. Hikers make this trek in small groups of about 12 hikers, two guides, and a team of porters. The porters are a pack of insanely strong, agile men (and in recent years, a few women) who mostly grew up in the Andes. Thus they are accustomed to the altitude and make racing up and down the rugged peaks look graceful and easy, even with fifty pounds on their backs. They wear bright matching outfits according to their trekking company, and move methodically like coordinated armies. The porters carry the bulk of your stuff — tents, duffle bags, cooking supplies, propane tanks, etc. — and treat you and your fellow hikers like royalty. You will be awoken in the morning at your tent with a cup of hot cocoa tea, which both warms you from the inside out and helps combat altitude sickness. Then you will meet your group in a tent for a hot breakfast. You will refill your water bottles, then strap on your daypack to start hiking. The hike is arduous and steep and loaded with rocky, endless steps, but the scenery is breathtaking. At lunchtime, the porters set up a midway camp where you will rest and eat lunch. At the end of your hiking day, the porters setup a tent with hot cocoa, tea, popcorn and sweets for a pre-dinner happy hour. Dinner on my trek consisted of seven (yes, seven!) homemade courses, packed with Peruvian flavors.

Along the trek, the archeological sites and Inca ruins feel magical, transporting you to an ancient era. They are also generally almost empty as they can only be reached by hiking. The different hiking groups rarely meet at the same ruins at the same time, so each stop feels like a private excursion. The guides are true raconteurs and will share rich bits of history along the way. You’ll also get plenty of time to bond with your fellow hikers, who come from all over the globe. On the last day, you and your group will wake before sunrise to lineup at what is called the Sun Gate. It is the upper entrance to Macchu Picchu. You will reach the top of the ruins as the sun rises over the mountains. You will be some of the first visitors to enter the park (before the busloads of tourists arrive). Once inside the park (if you booked a permit well in advance), you will have the option to hike Huayna Picchu, a challenging trek up an additional peak that sits high above the ruins, and high above the crowds. This part of my entire Peru trip was by far the most rewarding of them all. Standing at the highest point, looking down at the Lost City, is unforgettable.

BELMOND HIRAM BINGHAM TRAIN TO MACHU PICCHU

If a four-day, 26-mile trek does not sound like your cup of tea, you can opt for the more lavish experience. You can take a luxury train trip aboard the Belmond Hiram Bingham to Machu Picchu. The 1920s parlour cars are elegantly decorated, adorned with wood panels, brass finishes, warm lighting and pressed linen dining tables. The train will wind through the Sacred Valley and ascend into the Andes from Cusco while you devour gourmet meals and listen to live Peruvian music. The route itself is 57 miles and lasts about three and a half hours in each direction. You’ll traverse along the Urubamba River (the Sacred River), go through ancient towns and lush cloud forests, and admire the towering mountains and vast grasslands dotted with llamas. The train takes you to the gateway city of Aguas Calientes. A short shuttle ride from the train will take you to the entrance of Machu Picchu.

THE CHARMING CITY OF CUSCO

Cusco will be your home base from which to take day excursions into the Andes, to a vast array of archeological sites and to Machu Picchu. But the city itself is also a fascinating, wondrous place to explore. Cusco was once the capital of the Inca Empire before Spanish conquistadors conquered the area. The city thus boasts elements of both the ancient Inca civilization and Spanish colonial architecture. Cobblestone streets branch out from the central square called the Plaza de Armas. Incan temples, Spanish Catholic churches and a baroque convent are all found around the city. An arts district, with an abundance of narrow cobblestone alleys lined with artisan crafts is a reasonable walk from the square. Llamas roam the streets, guided by women in colorful, traditional Andean fashion, while street musicians compose a lovely soundtrack for your exploration. Cusco is the type of city that will charm you instantaneously, then grow on you more and more as you wander. On my first day in the city, a free walking tour departing from the Plaza de Armas, was the perfect introduction. The culinary scene in Cusco is also rich with options. And don’t miss visiting one of the many chocolate shops which will demonstrate how to make chocolate straight from the native cacao fruit.

THE AUSUNGATE GLACIER LAKES

ABOVE A vegan appetizer served at Vida Vegan in Cusco. RIGHT One of the Ausungate glacial lakes.

For another day trip, I ventured out to hike around the Ausungate glacial lakes. The trailhead is a long drive from Cusco (about three and a half hours), but it is worth it. The drive takes you through a variety of scenic areas and by fields full of alpacas and llamas. The Ausungate glacial lakes are created by the run-off of 700-year-old glaciers, which hang magnificently on the rugged peaks of the Cordillera Vilcanota range. The peaks are stunning, towering above you as you wander around the glacial lakes below. Each lake has a different shade of blue, turquoise or green based on the mineral content and plants they cover. The area feels totally remote and far-removed from Cusco. A few local Andean people live in grass huts along the river and a small town of llama and alpaca herders sits near the trailhead. If you go with a tour group as I did, a local woman will make you and your fellow hikers breakfast and lunch in her own home. NOVEMBER 2020 • pointpubs.com

The hike around the lakes is relatively easy and flat (which was welcomed after my trek on the Inca trail). The area is a fairly new attraction, so does not gather the hordes of tourists that the more popular Humanatay lake does. The hike to Humanatay lake is reportedly much steeper and challenging. I personally was happy we opted for the Ausungate lakes, where the mood was serene, the landscape seemingly untouched. At the end of the day, hikers can swim in the thermal baths that rest below the lakes.

FLOATING REED ISLANDS

After our time in Cusco, I headed to the city of Puno by overnight bus (eight hours), then hopped on a shuttle to the harbor on Lake Titicaca for a trek by boat to the Floating Reed Islands of the Uros people. The Uros are an indigenous, preIncan people dating back 3,700 years who live on a series of floating islands handmade of dirt mounds and totora reed, a sort of thick, wet, grass, like the Everglades. There are more than 120 small floating islands, each with their own village leader. The island we visited housed only five families. After stepping off the boat and onto the island, which feels a bit like walking on a squishy, wet mattress as the reeds give way to a mild bounce, the leader of the island circled our group up to demonstrate how his community created their floating home: first, they cut the dirt mounds with a giant saw, then they roped the mounds

together and layered them four feet thick with the totora reed. In some spots, the leader showed us a hole had been cut through to the lake below for the people to fish. The community also catches ducks, then cures the meat with salt and dries it in the sun for a sort-of duck jerky. Thanks to the Euro-Solar Programme, which was started to help poor communities get sustainable power, the Uros people now have solar power panels to electrify their grass huts. After exploring the little island, the local Uros women serenade you with a version of “Row, row, row your boat” in multiple languages, then usher you onto a homemade vessel for a ride to the islands’ “capital” to buy coffee, pastries and get your passport stamped. This boat is made of reeds and rope, with two gondola-shapes on either side of a wooden platform, painted colorfully and crafted into animal shapes, giving the craft a Chinese New Year vibe. While the experience feels somewhat contrived, with hordes of tourists all paraded through the same programming, it was fascinating to see how the Uros people live.

LAKE TITICACA

After visiting the Floating Islands, we re-boarded the motorboat and set out on a two-hour ride across Lake Titicaca to the island of Taquille. The ride is long and monotonous but gives one an idea of how massive Lake Titicaca is — more like a vast

ocean. Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in South America and rests at a dizzying altitude of 12,500 feet above sea level. It was formed during the pre-ice age about sixty million years ago when massive earthquakes shook the Andes Mountains splitting the range in two and forming a hollow that eventually got filled with water from melting glaciers. The lake is a sacred lake to the Incas and was home to one of Peru’s most ancient pre-inca civilizations, the Puraka, dating back to 200BC. Legends tell of a “lost city” underneath Lake Titicaca. On Taquille, we hiked around, had a home-cooked lunch (including a quinoa soup, green trout and papas fritas) and got a weaving demonstration by a local man. On Taquille, we were told that both men and women learn to knit from a young age, and unless a man can knit successfully, he is not marriage material. The man showed us his process from start to finish: first he makes a natural shampoo by grinding a local leaf, then he shears a sheep, cleans the sheep’s wool with the homemade shampoo and dyes it in a boiling pot of natural plant dyes. He spins the wool into string, then knits it into intricate patterns. Approximately 2,500 people live on Taquille, crafting their own wares and living off agriculture planted on tiered terraces. The way of life on the island feels pure, albeit a bit boring.

HUACACHINA OASIS

About four hours outside of Lima rests the Huacachina Oasis, a small, quirky desert town. There you can take an adrenaline-pumping, scream-inducing, rollercoaster-ride of a sand buggy tour up and down the steep dunes. You can also rent sand boards. Long rides on your stomach aboard a wooden board, head first down steep terrain, is enough to bring out anyone’s inner child. At the end of the day, the

sunset casts golden shadows across miles of rolling dunes. The desert scenery is such a wild departure from Lima and Cusco that it feels as if you have been abducted and transported to another planet. The dune buggies are actually Mars rovers. It is a surreal sensation to suddenly be in a hot, remote desert when only days before you were wearing a winter coat, hiking around glacial lakes at the bottom of the Andes. This rapid change in environment and climate as you travel across Peru is undoubtedly one of the allures to this South American country. Y

Scattered Pictures The holidays are the perfect time to curate your memorabilia BY RICHARD ROSSER

T

he recent quarantine has given many people a lot of time inside their homes to clean up and organize their lives. But what about the souvenirs and memorabilia that fail the following test: When you die, what will your loved ones do with your stuff? When asked about a recent funeral in another state, my friend summarized his frustration as he described three days with his two siblings as they processed a lifetime of stuff after their remaining parent’s passing. I asked what they did with all the stuff. “We donated or threw away almost all of it,” he said. So I thought about my parents. What would my sister and I do with their houseful of belongings? Conversely, what stuff of mine would my children want me to keep for them — if anything? There is a lot of advice available on decluttering. But souvenirs, photos and the like are a different matter than, say, organizing your Tupperware. What do you do with items that have no function, beauty or investment value — just stuff that represents you or people and places you care about. Memorabilia is probably the best word for the category, but one person’s memorabilia is another person’s museum-quality artifact. Here are the basic options: RETAIN: Keep all of it (after you go, this problem will go away on its own.) Only you can decide whether an item is valuable. REJECT: Donate or discard some of it now. Trash is trash, and charitable donations should be easy to discern. The most suitable charity could be the town library from your childhood or your university’s alumni association. Think of this as the first phase of the reduction process, so plan ahead for other options. NOVEMBER OCTOBER 2020 • pointpubs.com

REDUCE: Condense or repurpose items like making one custom t-shirt with images from the 20 t-shirts in your Daytona Bike Week collection. RETIRE: Use family gatherings like Thanksgiving to host a retirement ceremony for selected items. Perhaps this could become a new family holiday ritual. Create different meetings to accomplish this task. Gather a group of high school or college friends, meet for dinner and then toss a bunch of high school memorabilia destined for the landfill. New photos from the events can be added to pictures of the discarded memorabilia and made into a photo book with copies for everyone. Honestly, my own children do not want many years of yearbooks from both parents plus other random materials like report cards and graduation caps. They will want a book to condense their parents’ youth into a compact collection that may be treasured by even future generations.. There are endless variations on those four categories: Retain - Reject reduce - or retire. So I did it. I was active in snow skiing in my younger days. I had a baseball cap from those days and collected pins from the ski areas I visited. I decided to reduce the cap and pins into a photobook, a custom edition of about 40 pages purchased for $20 to $50 plus the effort to put it together. I disassembled the pins from the hat and photographed them with a good camera and lighting setup. I placed the photographs in the photobook along with photos from my skiing days. I printed copies for each of my two children and one for me. I am quick to add that my “reduction” is not quite the right term here as the photo books are about the same weight as the originals. But what if my collection was bowling trophies or mounted trophy fish? A photo book with or without a significant amount of text is a perfect way to capture the essence of these types of collections into a minimal space and make copies for everyone who wants one. Also, many of these efforts to reduce memorabilia

46 pointpubs.com •

POINT! PUBLISHING

allow you the ability to post to social media where you and others can access the memories — now and for a long time if you wish. For holiday gatherings, you could invite family to review and select what would go into the book or other project. Family or friends could bring or send other materials or photographs to include in the project. Obviously, you can expand or reduce this idea. You could have lunch with an old friend and purge an item from your world after an updated photograph of you, the friend and the item: one friend, one item — but a lovely ritual.

Or you could host a major family reunion, hire a memoir writer, professional photographer and pay for leather-bound books of your life story after purging most of your belongings and moving to Tahiti. You could turn a favored group of travel souvenirs, ticket stubs or book covers into a photographic collage poster on your wall. The point is to be deliberate. Memorabilia should bring you joy and not be a burden on others. And the effort to curate your mementos, souvenirs and photos can serve as a catalyst for many new memories and good times as you retire some of it. Y

Creative Projects to Encapsulate Your Most Memorable Moments We all have engaging stories to tell. Our lives are rich collections of cherished, vibrant moments. Our most replayed memories have left indelible imprints on our souls.

Many of us keep memorabilia and mementos as talismans, tying us to our pasts. These objects serve to remind us of the people, places and events that marked the chapters of our lives. While these material reminders are great for us, they provide little purpose and carry little meaning for our loved ones once we pass on. Our closets full of treasures quickly become closets full of burdens for those we leave behind. If we’re not the type to hold onto material mementos, then perhaps it’s our minds and hearts that are crowded with stories we want to share. Luckily, there are professionals to help. This idea was the inspiration behind Amaranthine Productions, a creative company that helps you encapsulate your memories to pass along to your family and friends. Amaranthine Productions can help you materialize your vision. Here are some examples of the projects they can help you create: PHOTO & STORY BOOKS | Professionally photograph mementos you’ve been holding onto or digitize photographs you already have. Then, using these photos, create beautiful picture books. You can also be interviewed and have professionally written stories that accompany your images. EDITED INTERVIEWS | Record you telling your tallest tales, then edit the footage into a polished video, audio podcast or Q & A book. VIDEO AND PHOTO MONTAGES | Digitize your videos and photos, listen and/or record your stories, then turn them into a polished film.

COOKBOOKS | Take your best recipes, stories about your recipes and photos of your most favorite meals and design a cookbook for you. KIDS MEMORABILIA BOOKS | Do you have boxes of your kids’ grade-school projects? Photograph or digitize the memorabilia, then turn them into a book. MEMOIRS & AUTOBIOGRAPHIES | Sit down and be interviewed, and then have your life stories turned into a non-fiction novel. CONSOLIDATED JOURNALS | Digitize your journal entries and turn them into a polished book. LETTERS TO LOVED ONES | Write and/or edit letters. These could be life lessons to pass on or personal messages. The letters could be individual or a collection formatted creatively.

TAMBO DEL INKA VALLE SAGRADO

Travel writer Danielle Charbonneau trekked through Peru on a dime. (See our feature story in this issue.) But if Peru is on your bucket list and you’re more of the luxurious-resorttype, then Tambo del Inka fits the bill. Nestled in the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, the resort stands as a contemporary doorway to the region’s cultural and natural richness. This exclusive retreat even has a private train station to Machu Picchu. The resort also offers fine dining, a 24-hour business center, a therapeutic spa, along with an emerald lagoon and blooming riverside gardens. In homage to the ancient legacy of the region, the rooms harmonize with the surrounding area’s stunning beauty and offer mesmerizing views of the Andes and the Vilcanota River from private balconies.
