Superior Results for Hip and Knee Surgery Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the rst phone call, you will nd my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs. I care for people in their 80s and 90s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20s and 30s who desire an improved quality of life and want to feel “normal” again.
Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient. “Dr. Leone is the best. I had my left hip done using the SPAIRE technique and the recovery was so incredible I decided to have my right hip done.” ~Bettina Kapp
“I went to three orthopedic surgeons and Dr. Leone was the only one who discovered the underlying cause of my knee pain. Four days after my knee revision surgery I was walking eight miles.” ~Dan Bell

For 35 years, the area’s premier club for local fishers has met monthly to discuss topics focused on catching fish — and protecting them.
Christine Balisteri Van Buskirk, her husband Kyle and their four children have traveled to some amazing places, but Christine never suggested to contribute to the magazine, until Guatemala. And we agreed that now was a good time for a story about a local family seeking an adventure rich with history, culture and chocolate.

Creatively Speaking
Navigating the Sensitivities of our Modern World BY SUSAN ROSSER These days, more often than not, things aren't black or white but somewhat murky and nuanced. But our sensitivity to insults seems quite solid. In August, I read a column in the Washington Post by Padma Lakshmi, a cookbook author and the host of Bravo's "Top Chef." Lakshmi criticizes a column that ran a few days earlier in the Post entitled "You Can't Make Me Eat These Foods" by humorist Gene Weingarten. His list includes all Indian food. He writes: Indian food. The Indian subcontinent has vastly enriched the world, giving us chess, buttons, the mathematical concept of zero, shampoo, modern-day nonviolent political resistance, Chutes and Ladders, the Fibonacci sequence, rock candy, cataract surgery, cashmere, USB ports ... and curry. If you like Indian curries, yay, you like one of India's most popular class of dishes! If you think Indian curries taste like something that could knock a vulture off a meat wagon, you do not like a lot of Indian food. I don't get it, as a culinary principle. It is as though the French passed a law requiring a wide swath of their dishes to be slathered in smashed, pureed snails. (I'd personally have no problem with that, but you might, and I would sympathize.) Actually, this isn't the original text. In the first iteration, Weingarten wrote that all Indian food is based on one spice — curry. However, curry is a combination of many spices. Lakshmi points out that with a simple Google search, he could have learned about curry. As I read Lakshmi's article, I thought, "yup, she makes some excellent points." But then, the other side of my brain thought that Weingarten including Indian cuisine in a list of foods he doesn't like is possibly not a colossal crime. And while he at first defended his opinion, he later apologized for the column via Twitter and said he should have just picked one Indian dish he doesn't like, rather than using such a "broad brush" to paint an entire cuisine. I have to admit, when I first read Weingarten's column, I didn't find it offensive. It was only after I read Lakshmi's rebuttal that I realized how it could be offensive.

POINT! PUBLISHING
For me, this entire kerfuffle highlighted a critical problem in today's world — the feeling that we must always pick a side. But, all of us need to be able to hold two competing thoughts in our heads. It's okay to be confused, and it's important to ask questions. I re-read the both columns, and I understood why he didn't believe his writing was insulting. He thought he was portraying himself as the butt of the joke — depicting himself as a sort of man-child who discounts large food groups and stubbornly sticks by his opinion. On the other side, my mother always said, "humor at the expense of others is never funny." It doesn't take much smarts to make fun of something. So yeah, disparaging the food of an entire nation was bound to piss off someone. And yes, it was cheap and easy and neither clever nor funny. But isn't it also possible that he simply made a misjudgment, and he isn't the worst person on the planet? Have we devolved into a people where we can't find some modicum of merit in competing sides of a disagreement? I'm not saying there are never times when right and wrong aren't clear. But a good person can do a bad thing. An intelligent person can write a bad column. At the end of her column Lakshmi suggests that young comedians of color should apply to be humorists at the Post. I haven't read all of Weingarten's columns, but should he lose his post at the Post over one piece that was a miss? As someone who writes a column, I would hate to think that people would write me off if I "missed" one month. She was wise to point out his mistakes, but man, she really stuck it to him. Perhaps a lighter tone might have been equally effective. In the end, after considering all the angles, I do lean more towards Lakshmi's point of view. Making the cuisine of an entire nation of about a billion people the butt of a joke is never a good look, and honestly, not even funny. My mother, who had a fantastic sense of humor, would not have found Weingarten's column witty — and believe me — she was no fan of curry. Y

Good Oral Health Leads to Better Overall Health BY VALERIE LOCAY They say beauty’s only skin deep, but thanks to advances in modern science, we now know beauty runs much deeper. And a path to a beautiful body, inside and out, can start each time you pick up your toothbrush.
HEALTHY GUMS CAN MEAN A REDUCED RISK OF HEART DISEASE
Did you know regular preventative dental care can protect your heart? Several studies have shown that periodontal (gum) disease has a direct association with heart disease. Scientists say the inflammation caused by periodontal disease may be responsible
for the link. Periodontal disease can also exacerbate existing heart conditions.
HEALTHY TEETH AND GUMS CAN REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE
Not only does your heart benefit, but your brain can too. Studies have also pointed to a relationship between periodontal disease and stroke. In one study that looked at the causal relationship of oral infection as a risk factor for stroke, people diagnosed with acute cerebrovascular ischemia were more likely to have an oral infection when compared to those in the control group.
DIABETES AND PERIODONTAL DISEASE
Last but certainly not least, dental checkups for people with diabetes are a life-saving
game-changer. Diabetic patients are more likely to develop periodontal disease, which can increase blood sugar and diabetic complications. People with diabetes are more likely to have periodontal disease than people without diabetes, probably because people with diabetes are more susceptible to contracting infections. So grab that toothbrush and floss and get going. Your smile and the rest of your body will thank you. Valerie Locay, R.D.H. - Valerie is the lead hygienist at Park Plaza Dental in Pompano Beach. She graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a Bachelors degree in Science, then pursued her passion in dental hygiene at Sandford Brown University. She is already positively impacting our patients by improving their oral health while maintaining a comfortable environment.

Lady Luck in Shipwreck Park Will Be Getting a New Underwater Sculpture THE CITY OF POMPANO BEACH HAS COMMISSIONED NEW ARTWORK FOR THE UNDERWATER SCULPTURE GARDEN AT SHIPWRECK PARK, AN ARTIFICIAL REEF SYSTEM MADE UP OF SUNKEN SHIPS. The new sculpture, entitled “Mechan H20,” will be a depiction of an underwater exploration robot with an old-school diving helmet and air tank. The sculpture will stand 6.7 feet tall and weigh a minimum of 500 pounds. Once the sculpture is created, it will be on display at the beach for one year, and will then be submerged into the ocean and attached to Shipwreck Park’s Lady Luck, a 324-foot tanker vessel that was sunk in 2016 one mile off the Pompano Beach coast. The Pompano Beach Public Art Committee selected the design by Oregon-based Tyler FuQua Creations from among 107 proposals received in response to a Call to Artists issued in January 2021. In September, the City Commission approved the design and a contract with Tyler FuQua Creations for the fabrication and installation of the artwork. The total budget for the project is $35,000. The sculpture will be made primarily of quarter-inch thick steel with stainless steel accents. The helmet, shoulder, hips, elbows and legs will be hollow to create places for sea creatures to live and explore. The sculpture will stand on a thick, gear-shaped steel plate for stability and easy land installation. The robot

will be holding an ancient-style stainless steel trident that will add additional support. Although the prongs of the trident appear to be sharp in mock drawings of the artwork, the actual sculpture will not have sharp edges. The design of the sculpture was reviewed and approved by the Broward County Environmental Protection and Growth Management Department. Mechan H20 will be the second sculpture added to the Lady Luck since the ship was sunk. Last December, the “Pirates’ Treasure Chest,” a sculpture by artist Donald Gialanella, was attached to the deck of the Lady Luck after being displayed at the Great Lawn on the beach for one year.

The Bite Eatery: Pompano’s First Food Hall Is Getting Closer to Opening The Bite Eatery, which will occupy an approximately 9,000-square-foot space in The Harbor Village Shops, has experienced construction delays, but is expected to open in January 2022 as the first-ever food hall in Pompano Beach. Located at 2715 E. Atlantic Blvd., the food hall will feature nine restaurant vendors and one full-service bar, all under one roof. Jessica Gollel of Gollel Family Properties, the owner and developer of The Bite Eatery, had anticipated an opening in summer 2021, but said the construction timeline was affected by COVID-19 and long lead times for materials. Gollel Family Properties acquired the vacant space in The Harbor Village Shops in 2019, and is doing a full rebuild of the interior. The vendor units will be along the east and west walls of the food hall, and the central area will be for the bar and seating. There will be 209 indoor seats, including 37 seats around the bar. There will also be outdoor seating. The current list of vendors that will have a space in The Bite Eatery includes the Deli Shack, which will be operated by the former owner of The Onion Roll, a popular beachside deli in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea that closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Other vendors include Riccardo’s Pizzeria (pizza, calzone, fresh bread); Ceviche Time (Peruvian); La Chancla (homemade traditional Mexican cuisine); I Heart Mac & Cheese; Senbazuru (sushi rolls, specialty Japanese burgers); Lobstar, currently a successful food truck specializing in lobster items, particularly lobster rolls; and a restaurant serving American-style burgers. There will also be Moop Pops, a gelateria featuring popsicles in

creamy, fruity and “boozy” (prosecco, malbec) flavors. The vendors will only be in charge of the food they cook and the staff needed for their unit. The Bite Eatery will provide food runners, bussers, dishwashing, cleaning services, furniture, restrooms, maintenance, a bar manager and floor managers, which is cost-effective for the vendors, said Gollel. Operating amid COVID-19, the food hall will have personnel dedicated to keeping everything sanitized, said Gollel. A point-of-sale technology will be provided at each table. Patrons can scan a QR (Quick Response) code with their smartphone and then browse menu items from all the restaurants, place their order and pay, right from their table. Patrons will also be able to order food directly at the counter. Delivery and pick-up options will also be available. The food hall’s anticipated opening hours are weekdays from 9am to 10pm. The weekends will have extended hours till about 12am for both the bar and vendors that choose to stay open. There will be brunch on the weekends, with bottomless mimosas. There are plans for live music from local artists in a variety of genres, probably only on the weekends and select weeknights. There may even be a small area for dancing, said Gollel. The food hall will be “open and airy,”

with a nautical theme. Reclaimed driftwood will be used for the wall paneling, vendor stalls and posts. “There’s going to be a lot of fun elements,” said Gollel. A light fixture made from an actual rowboat will hang from the ceiling. A local muralist will paint a wall-towall interior mural above the glass entrance doors. The mural will include local themes, such as the Pompano pier, the lighthouse at the Hillsboro Inlet and the beach. The concept of opening a food hall was inspired by the Mercato Centrale, a food hall that Gollel frequented during a college semester spent in Florence, Italy. Gollel is working on The Bite Eatery with her father Richard Gollel – who founded Gollel Family Properties – and her brothers Richard and Michael. The family lives in the Hillsboro Shores neighborhood of Pompano Beach, just a five-minute drive from the food hall. Gollel expects construction to be completed in December, which will give the vendors about a month to prepare for the opening. The Bite Eatery will be the second food hall to open in Broward County, following the Sistrunk Marketplace, which opened last year in Fort Lauderdale. “Although there have been some delays, we’re working hard and moving toward opening, which we’re ecstatic about,” said Gollel. The Backyard is Getting Underway in Old Town Construction of The Backyard — a new pedestrian and dining plaza in Pompano’s Old Town district — is expected to get underway by this month, according to Horacio Danovich, the city’s capital improvements and Innovation District director. The Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is creating the approximately 9,500-square-foot public plaza as part of its effort to redevelop the city’s historic downtown as an arts and entertainment destination. The plaza area lies roughly north of the Bailey Contemporary Arts building (41 NE First Street), between NE First Avenue and North Flagler Avenue. Currently, the space
consists of a parking lot, a grassy area under a large native ficus tree and an unimproved alleyway. The plaza will be used as an outdoor dining area for new restaurants that are being attracted to the space, including a contemporary southern restaurant, called South Bar & Kitchen, which
ABOVE Rendering of The Backyard in Old Town Pompano
will occupy the building at 165 NE First Avenue. The plaza will also have seating for the general public. Construction of The Backyard is expected to take about nine months to complete, according to Danovich. The Backyard will consist of paver bricks and a new rectangular wooden deck surrounding the existing ficus tree, which is a prominent feature of the plaza. Construction of The Backyard was expected to get underway last year, but the start date was delayed several times because the plans went through various modifications. The Backyard project will be constructed at a guaranteed maximum price of $1.62 million, with funding coming from the CRA. Y
Old Town Untapped Kicks off this Month After a long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Old Town Untapped Is returning to Pompano’s historic downtown this month. This popular street festival featuring live music, food and art kicks off the season on Nov. 5, from 6-10 pm, and will continue to take place on the first Friday of every month until May 2022. The location of Old Town Untapped is on NE First Street and North Flagler Avenue near the Bailey Contemporary Arts Center (BaCA). The event, which is free for all ages to attend, includes food trucks, craft beer, artist vendors and art gallery openings at BaCA (41 NE First Street). The Beatlemaniax-USA is the live entertainment scheduled for Nov. 5. The band performs classic Beatles songs from their “touring years” (1962-1966) and recreates songs

from the “studio years” (1967-1970), which were never performed in concert by The Beatles themselves. The last time Old Town Untapped took place was in March 2020. The event was launched several years ago by the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) as a way to “Untap the Potential” of the downtown area and showcase its opportunities for business investment. Old Town Untapped is now organized and managed by the City of Pompano Beach through its Cultural Affairs Department, which took over the event from the Pompano Beach CRA in October 2020. In the past, the Old Town Untapped event extended into the area behind BaCA, including a wooden deck surrounding a large ficus tree. This season, the event
will be limited to NE First Street and North Flagler Avenue because the CRA is in the process of redeveloping the area behind BaCA as a pedestrian and dining plaza called “The Backyard.” Construction of The Backyard is expected to get underway by this month, according to Horacio Danovich, the city’s capital improvements and Innovation District director. It Dawned on Me
My Smart Bulbs Can Beat Up Your Honor Student BY DAWNE RICHARDS
NOT REALLY. NOT YET, ANYWAY. BUT I CAN SAY THIS –— MANY OF MY "SMART" DEVICES ARE BECOMING SMARTER THAN I AM. THEY CERTAINLY MAKE BETTER DECISIONS. Take, for example, my car. It’s a 2018 that I bought this past June, trading in my beloved yellow convertible for a slightly less obvious obnoxious teal-ish blue convertible. Did I mention that I loved my yellow convertible? It was so.much.fun to drive, but it made it difficult to commit crimes, because it was so freaking obvious whodunit. No, really. OK, not crimes, but anything. For example, I surprised my granddaughter with a vintage Barbie Dream House. I bought it nearby, put the top down, and gleefully drove home, Dream House strapped in the back seat. Before I could even make it home, my daughter called. "Did you just buy Emma a giant Barbie house?" she demanded. “Why do you ask?” I replied. “Because Joanne saw you and called me. She said, 'Don't look now, but your mother just bought Emma a huge Barbie house." Sigh. Going incognito is challenging in a bumblebee car. One thing I loved about the Bumblebee was its throwback simplicity. It was a pure muscle car – simple dashboard, growly exhaust, and few bells and whistles. Also, passengers hated riding in it, which warmed the cockles of my introvert-atheart’s heart. Anyway, I digress. Sort of. As usual. My new-to-me, slightlymore-sedate, teal-colored convertible has far more bells and whistles. People of a certain age (read: old, like me) may remember “My Mother the Car.” That’s this car, except meaner. It occasionally displays disapproving messages on the media screen, like, “YOU’RE DRIVING TOO FAST TO RETRACT THE TOP!!!” Not only did the car yell at me in ALL CAPS, but it prevented me from retracting the top, thankfully, since I’d accidentally done that. Whew! This is just one example of an inanimate object making better

decisions than I do. There are so many more, but I fear angering the Tech Gods. My phone is also in on this campaign to show humans that we're no longer the smartest beings on earth. "Moisture detected in the charging port" is one of the most terrifying messages my phone emits. Typically, there is no moisture anywhere near that
phone, but we know how this ends — if the phone says it detects moisture, there goes your warranty. It's my word against the phone's, and the phone wins every time. I should probably be glad that my “smart” light bulbs are, in reality, dumb as posts. They’re not just dumb; they’re stubborn, finicky, and lazy. “Cannot connect!” the app exclaims, suggesting a “reset” process more complex than a physics exam. Since I’d like to be able to, you know, SEE AT NIGHT, I’m forced to sweat out the dissertation masquerading as “simple instructions.” Sometimes they work. Sometimes, I have to make a sacrifice to the Tech Gods. But I won’t tell you what the sacrifice is, because the bulbs might get angry and refuse to work at all. Y

T
he Lighthouse Point Saltwater Sportsman Association (LHPSSA) is one of the oldest and most respected sport fishing and diving organizations in Southeast Florida. Over the last 35-plus years, the LHPSSA’S list of local fishermen and divers reads like a who’s who list in the recreational and competitive world of offshore and back-country fishing and sport-divers. Holding monthly meetings at the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club, the group hosts both local speakers and lecturers from around the world offering advice and tips on all things fishing, diving and environmental. Such topics include kite fishing, deep-jigging, sailfishing, daytime swordfishing, trolling for mahi-mahi, king fishing, tuna, spearfishing and diving for lobsters and hogfish — not to mention rigging clinics, cast-netting, and catching and keeping live bait. The LHPSSA has a long history of working on a vast array of environmental and conservation initiatives. The LHPSSA is one of the only fishing clubs

From projects to save the beaches and reefs to working with sea turtles and cleaning piers to preserving historic landmarks like the Hillsboro Lighthouse, the LHPSSA is always willing to help. Supporting our veterans and military is another popular pastime for the members. We support and participate in Take a Hero Fishing and The Wounded Warrior Projects. Many members compete in and have won any number of local and international billfish, kingfish, and king-dolphin-wahoo tournaments. In addition to holding inter-membership events and competitions, the club frequently organizes trips to the Bahamas, Central America, Louisiana, back-country Florida, and the Keys. Family Adventure
A PLEASANTLY SURPRISING VACATION TO GUATEMALA
BY CHRISTINE BALISTRERI-VAN BUSKIRK
When close friends (who are extensive world travelers) recommended we take a family vacation to Guatemala, I must admit, a trip to Central America hadn’t been top on my list. In fact, I’m not sure it was on the list at all. But they were so enthusiastic; I decided to explore the possibility.

y husband Kyle and I had traveled quite a bit with our four children, but we had rarely explored South America, much less Guatemala. To start with, I have to say I didn’t know what to expect. I was flying blind — just going on the recommendations of friends. My first impression was that it was different — a departure from our typical travel destinations. It turned out “the difference” was a good thing. We arrived in Guatemala City on a Sunday. Apparently, on Sundays, many people leave the city to visit with family and friends. Needless to say, the traffic was terrible, and we were thankful we hired a car service to take us to our rental home on Lake Atitlan. Even the three-hour ride to the house was an experience. We drove through the countryside,

taking in the new terrain and sites. While the kids noticed there were quite a few stray dogs on the way. Our driver took us to Chichoy, a fantastic lunch spot where we enjoyed a classic Guatemalan lunch of grilled chicken and steak with guacamole, plenty of salads and of course, a wide selection of Latin American beers. The place was gorgeous, a hub of activity and pretty lively thanks to a mariachi band. And there were plenty of locals — always a good sign — and certainly some tourists.
THE LAKE HOUSE
Then we arrived at Lake Atitlan, and I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I had seen pictures and talked to our friends, but we were just going on their strong recommendation. Blind faith! We rented a house on the lake, and our Airbnb host had arranged for a boat to meet us at the marina and take us to the house. Reuben, our boat captain, was fantastic. He took us all around the lake to visit different villages. But back to the lake. The water is crystal blue and five stately volcanoes surround the lake. The setting was tough for me to conceptualize before we arrived. There are several small cities either nestled along the water or up in the mountains all around the lake. And the lake — well, it’s a monster.
It was a magical setting. We paid Reuben for each trip across the lake or to whatever villages we wanted to visit. It was as if we had an Uber on the water! Simply put, the house we rented was out of control. The 6-acre property was beautifully landscaped with native trees. The house was built into the side of the mountain with several areas of exposed cliff rock architecture, and every room had a stunning view of the lake. The owner is from Guatemala, lives in Chicago half the year, and caters to an American clientele. She asked us what we were interested in and then set it up — including massages at the house. The house was outfitted with kayaks and paddleboards to use in the private cove or around on the lake and a wood-burning sauna that the house manager will fire up for you upon request — perfect for a bit of rest and relaxation after a day of sightseeing. To top it off, there was a large outdoor wood-burning pizza oven built into the side of the mountain. So we coordinated with the homeowner to do a pizza night. She hired cooks, and they provided all the pizza ingredients except the toppings. We had stopped at the grocery store on the way for water, snacks and alcohol, and we also picked up pizza toppings for our upcoming backyard pizza night. We also arranged through our host for cooks to prepare NOVEMBER 2021 • pointpubs.com

breakfast and dinner for us at the house. Typically, we were out and about for lunch but enjoyed authentic Guatemalan cuisine in the comfort of the house’s outdoor dining palapa, with the beautiful lake view, for the other meals. The price for this service was very reasonable, and we paid the host for this service through the Airbnb app.
AROUND THE LAKE
We called Rueben to pick us up each day and take us to another part of the lake, where we visited several villages and activities. Each town nestled up in the mountains focuses on different goods — such as textiles, pottery, coffee and chocolate. In one town, we learned about dying fabrics. At another stop, the kids learned about crushing the cocoa nibs and all about making chocolate. We also visited Cerro Tzankujil Nature Preserve, where we went on a hike and finished the visit cliff jumping! But maybe one of my favorite towns we visited around the lake

TOP A hike and lunch with Hans ABOVE The food scene in Guatemala was incredible.
ANTIGUA
(it’s hard to pick a favorite) was the little village of Santa Cruz. After Reuben dropped us off, we climbed into tuk-tuks (for all of about two dollars) that took us to Amigos de Santa Cruz — a restaurant overlooking the lake. But Amigos de Santa Cruz is more than just a place to eat — it is also a school. For more than 20 years, the organization has been working to improve the lives of the indigenous people of Santa Cruz. The restaurant and school provide training and experience, enabling people of Santa Cruz and some of the surrounding villages to find jobs to support their families. We enjoyed an entire afternoon of cooking classes. And then we got to eat our dinner afterward — the fruits of our labor. It was a phenomenal and inspiring experience. During our stay at the lake, everyone we met kept telling us about a mysterious man named Hans. There was a trail through the rainforest that led us to Hans. Imagine a German mountain man who brews his own beer and has a restaurant in the middle of nowhere — that’s Hans. After a long hike to find Hans, the experience lived up to the hype. He was hilarious, the beer was great and it was the perfect afternoon adventure.
Next, we traveled to the colonial town of Antigua, which felt like we had been dropped into a European village with cobblestone streets, brightly colored buildings and an incredible dining scene. Antigua is truly a hub of fantastic food. Every time we ate, we were sure we just had the best meal of our trip — that is, until our next feast. And the choices went way beyond just Guatemalan food. We had terrific ramen soup right there a million miles from Japan. And there was a French restaurant right around the corner from our Airbnb house that rivaled meals in France. We enjoyed Italian food for lunch and pastries from several outstanding bakeries. Simply put, the food scene in Antigua is impressive. We would go back just to Antigua for the weekend just for the dining scene alone. To make the trip even easier, we had the same Airbnb homeowner in the city who also helped coordinate transfers, cooking, and other conveniences. This home was built into the side of 250-year-old walls. But we did more than dine our way around the city. We actually did take in some of the sites, including the Catalina Arch and Cerro de la Cruz — a look-out spot with a vast cross. These are two of the most iconic locations in the city. We also took a comprehensive chocolate class in Antigua, where we got to make our own chocolate bars. It is worth mentioning that as we traveled around the country, we did see the discrepancy in incomes, but on the other hand, we also saw a lot of people working. I am still surprised at how much my whole family enjoyed this trip and still talks about it. We all didn’t know what to expect, but sometimes that can be the best kind of trip — one full of pleasant surprises. From our rooftop balcony in Antigua, we could see a volcano erupting in the distance. It was our last day, and it was as if it had been scheduled in honor of our departure. Dining Out Patio Bar & Grill. CONTINENTAL Enjoy cocktails just feet from the sandy beaches of Deerfield. This casual spot at the Wyndham serves casual fare. You can stick to the classics like wings or a shrimp cocktail. Or be more adventurous and enjoy an order of volcano spring rolls stuffed with crab and served with sriracha mayo and wakame slaw. They also serve a wide variety of burgers and plenty of fresh salads and savory entrees. 2096 NE Second St., (at the Wyndham Deerfield Beach Resort) 954-596-8618 $$ Taj. INDIAN This unassuming eatery in the Cove Shopping cen-
ter has been quietly chugging along for years. The restaurant serves various Indian favorites, including tandoori breads, biryani, lamb specialties, and plenty of vegetarian options. The saag paneer, which is the Indian version of creamed spinach, goes well with anything on the menu. And Popeye would be proud.201 SE 15th Terrace, 954-427-0423 $$
Tijuana Taxi Co. MEXICAN Perhaps it’s the all day happy hour
(Mon.-Fri., 11am-7pm) with $5 El Jimador margaritas, but as soon as you enter, the weight of the day lifts off your shoulders. There is outdoor patio seating available and a large U-shaped bar inside. We enjoyed the spicy shrimp tacos — soft flour tortillas filled with Cajun-grilled shrimp in a spicy chile lime sauce, topped with cilantro slaw, avocado and pico de gallo. 1015 S. PIZZA Little Italian Pizza is the best kind of Italian restaurant — the kind that feels like a hole-in-the-wall, but quickly grows vibrant as the large, steaming plates of homestyle Italian dishes come barreling out of the kitchen. While the small restaurant (with only about six cozy tables) doesn’t serve alcohol, they do allow BYOB (and there’s a liquor store conveniently located right next door). Families bring in bottles of red wine to cork, creating a joyous atmosphere. The restaurant has a huge menu with stromboli, calzone, soups, salads, subs, 26 kinds of specialty pizzas, baked pasta dishes, chicken and veal entrées and all your traditional pasta dishes and desserts. 448 S.
