A Touch of Fall Even though it was nearly 20 years ago, I remember the scene I am about to describe like it was yesterday. It was early September and my husband Richard and I were getting in the car to go out for lunch when he announced, “There’s a touch of fall in the air.” Quite frankly, my first reaction was that perhaps he was having some sort of psychotic break from reality and I should rush him to an emergency room. It was steaming hot, the sun was glaring down on us and you could have fried an egg on our driveway. “A touch of fall?” surely he must be mad. Like so many Floridians, I am a transplanted northerner and I love our tropical climate—except in September. Perhaps it’s my 30 years living in New York, but for some reason every September, I expect a different and cooler version of fall to arrive. After four months of oppressive Florida heat, of my hair looking like that stuff that grows on coconuts, of feeling like my makeup is literally melting off of my face—I am ready for a break. So there it is: I admit it. I miss autumn in New York. I miss that first day when you wake up and realize it’s a little too chilly for shorts and you might need a light sweater in the morning. I miss driving upstate to pick apples. I miss the beautiful ride back into the city on the New York State Thruway and arriving back home with enough apples for 37 pies and 12 quarts of apple sauce. I miss the bright colors of fall foliage and drinking coffee—not just for the caffeine buzz, but to actually warm up. My husband insists we have our own version of autumn and I should stop pining for the changing of the leaves. Up north, the transition from summer to fall is dramatic. The weather changes, the colors change, everyone seems to have a new sweater, and suddenly you find yourself with an urge to cook big pots of soup. In Florida the change is much more subtle, but if you look carefully, you can see it. As a native Floridian, Richard will point to the sky and tell me it’s more of a cerulean blue. And he detects even the slightest dip in the temperature and humidity. He even claims to notice changes in the barometric pressure. And while 20 years ago, I thought he was a little off his rocker, now I find myself a touch envious he is so in tune with his tropical surroundings. So perhaps I should give up my longing for warm apple cider, cardigans and boots. On some level, I may always miss the rich traditions that accompany fall in New York. But after so many years as a Floridian, it’s time to embrace autumn in the tropics and make my own Floridian traditions. So this September I will wait for the day when the sky turns a deeper shade of blue and I will bake a coconut cream pie. But I still might have to bake an apple pie too. After all, this is America.

What a Difference a Day Makes
September 24 will be the first ever Pompano Beach Make a Difference Day. At the next Pompano Beach commission meeting in September, Mayor Lamar Fisher will sign a proclamation declaring Make a Difference Day a holiday recognized by the city. The holiday is a grassroots community outreach project where every citizen can get involved in a service project on the fourth Saturday of September. “We all have talents and abilities we can share such as painting, collecting food, school supplies or clothing, planting a garden, cleaning a beach, reading to children or helping with homework. Just think of the gift that is to someone in need.” said Make a Difference Day creator, Susan Gingerich. Citizens can sign up to do a project or apply to have their own project become a part of the holiday. So put on your steel-toed boots, grab those work gloves, and get in on the action.

Orbach Theatre, in homage to Mr. Orbach). If you’re planning a trip to NYC in September, be sure to get tickets. Closer to home though, we’ve got our own exciting cultural season on the horizon, Although, at the time “The Fantasticks” was in its heyday, this was definitely not the case. When I arrived in Pompano Beach back in 1982, I attended Pompano Beach Cultural Center under construction. a local performance of “The Nutcracker” ballet, hoping for some of that “holiday in the city” feeling. Sadly, the afternoon was lacking (to say the least). In place of a real orchestra was…a record player. Really. It turns out I wasn’t the only one dismayed; perhaps some of our most fervent supporters of the performing arts were seated in the audience that day. Right around then, a group of committed South Florida citizens began planning what would become the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Its first venue opened in 1991 with a performance of “Phantom of the Opera.” The center now ranks among the top ten mostvisited theaters in the world. All told, the center stages more than 700 performances each year, reaching more than half a million patrons. Straighten Up
Two and a half years ago, Ashley Whitford took a leap of faith and founded Life First Chiropractic. After graduating from chiropractic school in 2010, Whitford worked for another chiropractor for four years learning the practice firsthand. Life First Chiropractic is founded on a mission to educate and adjust as many families as possible, helping them move back toward optimal health through chiropractic care. Growing up, Whitford experienced this in her own family. Her inspiration to start her own practice was her father, a chiropractor who currently lives in Michigan. “I grew up in a chiropractic family. I was very healthy,” said Whitford. “Without health, you have nothing, so I wanted to be able to make my community healthy like my father did for me.” Establishing her own practice wasn’t exactly easy. Whitford didn’t anticipate some of the obstacles that come with managing an entire business. “I went to school to be a chiropractor, I learned nothing about business. Learning the business side of things, like

marketing, accounting and human resources, has been the most challenging part of the process. It’s definitely a learning process,” said Whitford. Fortunately, Whitford is a fast learner. Life First Chiropractic is now a successful practice and Whitford, along with her small but dedicated staff of three, provide chiropractic services to patients in Pompano Beach and across South Florida. Whitford’s practice is unique in that it predominantly services families; expect to see plenty of expectant mothers and children if you stop in for an appointment. At the end of the day, in spite of the challenges, Whitford knows her work is worth it. “Getting to see people live their life again without pain or medication is very rewarding. I get to do something that makes a difference in people’s lives.” Life First Chiropractic is located at 1436 E Atlantic Blvd. in Pompano Beach. Visit their website at lifefirstchiropractic.com for more information about the practice or to make an appointment.

Balancing Acts MANAGING EVERYDAY STRESS BY DR. JILL SELBACH Now that the school year has begun and summer is over, the challenge to keep balance is on. We are back in the act of managing schedules and wearing too many hats. It is not an easy feat to achieve a good work/life balance. The stressors of work, managing a home, juggling children, caring for aging parents and finding time to spend doing enjoyable things can feel overwhelming.
What is stress?
Stress can come from change and having too many demands and desires. We also create stress when we have high expectations of ourselves and others. There are external and internal stressors:
External • • • • •
Work demands Community involvement Educational conflicts Family and household responsibilities Unforeseeable events
Internal
• Unrealistically high expectations for our personal performance • The need to do more and have more • Ineffective behaviors • Poor health habits • Negative thoughts, attitudes and feelings
What does stress look like? It affects our thinking: • Thoughts become unclear • Poor concentration • Poor attention span • Issues with memory • Compromised judgment • Frequent worry • Racing thoughts
It affects our emotions: • Feeling overwhelmed • Moodiness • Emotional sensitivity

Nervous habits (e.g. nail biting, pacing). Sleeping too much or too little Eating more or less Using alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs to relax Isolating yourself from others Neglecting responsibilities or procrastinating Many of these signs and symptoms are also indicative of other medical or psychological issues. It is important to check with your physician to determine if they are stress-related.
Don’t come home and kick the dog
We need to keep our homes as our place of tranquility and safety. It is important to leave stressors at the door. It is human nature to displace our stress and frustration onto the individuals closest to us. We become angry with our boss and come home and kick the dog (it’s a metaphor). Kids come home from school with piles of homework or upset about a bad day. Our kids, parents and other family members should not be the target of our displaced stress. We need to look at these people as a source of support.

“
I grew up eating all kinds of crazy stuff. It would be like, ‘oh what did you have for dinner?’ ‘Oh we had calves brains.’ —Chef Oliver Saucy
”
I
t has probably been said before, but celebrity Chef Oliver Saucy has the perfect name. His stunning culinary creations are absolutely “saucy” — they’re creative, colorful, multi-cultural and have an emphasis on local seafood and produce. Whether it’s Atlantic hogfish snapper, fruits and citruses from the tropics, Creole spices from New Orleans, zesty Cuban herbs or chilies from Mexico, Chef Saucy draws inspiration from South Florida’s surrounding cultures. By letting ingredients drive the plate, Chef Saucy keeps things fresh for both his guests as diners, and himself as a longtime chef. His creativity, however, can never be overshadowed by proper technique. “At the end of the day, if you can’t put it all together with the French and Mediterranean roots I grew up studying, it just doesn’t work,” said Saucy, “One culture, one plate. We don’t want to get too confusing or it takes your red wine drinker right off the table. That’s the bread and butter for us–the red wine drinker.” This blend of classic technique and innovative ideas is what Chef Saucy and Café Maxx is known for. It has made Café Maxx a Pompano Beach culinary destination for almost three decades. Saucy has been at the helm for almost as long. In 1988, Saucy co-purchased Café Maxx with the restaurant’s general manager Darrel Broek. The dynamic duo has run the restaurant ever since. Broek’s hospitable charm welcomes guests in the front of the house, while Saucy’s creations make them salivate at the table. To keep things balanced, Chef Saucy breaks down the menu into thirds: one third is classic, so regulars know what to expect; another third is standard proteins prepared with seasonal ingredients; and the last is where Chef Saucy gets to be creative. “The other third is whatever exciting thing we can get our hands on — whatever we feel like doing,” said Saucy. “We try to get the best available ingredients all the time.” Sometimes those ingredients can include fresh fish straight from the boat. Other times a vibrant produce item from a local farmer, or a fine cut of meat. Saucy is proud to carry local ingredients. He showcases his proteins in a display case on the edge of the dining room, which he dubs the “Raw Buffet.” After almost three decades of cooking, Saucy still exudes passion. Perhaps it runs thick in his blood; He learned his first fundamental
cooking techniques watching his father in action as the Executive Chef in a resort kitchen nestled in the back of a medieval German Castle in the Black Forest region of New York. “I grew up eating all kinds of crazy stuff. It would be like, ‘oh what did you have for dinner?’ ‘Oh, we had calves brains’,” said Saucy laughing. As a young adult, Saucy studied at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park where his father also taught for 28 years. Saucy’s son worked in the Café Maxx kitchen for two years and is now studying at CIA and working at a high-end restaurant in Manhattan called Gotham Bar & Grill. Saucy has also passed on his skills to non-relatives. For the 20th Anniversary of Café Maxx, 26 of Saucy’s protégés, who now run kitchens all over the country, came to congratulate him and thank him for his mentorship. For over 20 years Saucy has also been teaching cooking courses at Café Maxx during the summer months when the restaurant slows. “The biggest class we had was 99 people. Holy moly,” said Saucy. At the end of Saucy’s classes — which include topics like grilling meats, cooking lobster, or Mediterranean technique — Saucy serves a four to five course dinner, plus dessert with the recipes he taught. “The classes bring a lot of energy in here. It’s a lot of fun,” said Saucy. “It’s relationship building.” So what’s next for Chef Saucy and Café Maxx? “You know I think it’s just to keep the focus on making quality food,” said Saucy. “That never goes out of style.”

A Tour of Isle Casino’s Fantastical Culinary World BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU
T
aking the behind-the-scenes tour of Isle Casino’s culinary world with Executive Chef Aaron Andryka made me feel a lot like Dorothy dropping into Oz or Charlie into the chocolate factory. My stomach grew giddy, my eyes widened and my jaw dropped in awe of the complex inner-workings of a casino that operates two enormous kitchens, four full-service restaurants (including a steakhouse called Farradday’s, an Italian restaurant called Bragozzo, a farm-to-table buffet called Farmer’s Pick and a Jewish delicatessen called Myron’s), plus a shiny, custom food truck dubbed the Lone Wolf, a quick-service Italian cafe
and a coffee shop with a rainbow of homemade baked goods (guaranteed to bring out your inner fat kid). There were no Oompa Loompas or flying monkeys, but there was a flurry of sights, smells and sounds equally mesmerizing. There were the complimentary bowls of juicy, kosher pickles at Myron’s; an aquarium with live Maine lobsters in the open-concept kitchen at Farradday’s; homemade gnocchi, a crank-wheeled rotisserie and gargantuan abstract chandeliers made of red, blown glass at Bragozzo (which looked a lot like giant fusilli pasta noodles intertwined and suspended from the ceiling). There were trays of asteroid-sized apple-cinnamon muffins fresh from the oven in the bakery. Then there was Farmer’s Pick buffet—a world in and of itself. “There are little pockets of hidden jewels here,” said Jennifer Swope, Marketing Director of Operations at Isle Casino, “I think we have something that’s distinct
32
and original. I think there’s something for everybody here.” Farmer’s Pick is an à la minute style buffet with dishes inspired from around the world, each made from local ingredients (some as local as just behind the casino where Isle operates a two-and-a-half acre, seasonal farm). The buffet features a sushi station, made-toorder Asian wok, pizza window, mouth-watering dessert counter and Mexican bar replete with a lineup of about two dozen local Florida hot sauces, each with quirky names, a few with hand-drawn Iron Maiden art. (The hot sauce bar was Andyka’s idea, by the way). For the Pompano Fine Food & Wine Festival, Farmer’s Pick will be bringing single-serving Creme Brûlée with Drunken Berries: Blackberries, raspberries and blueberries are tossed in sugar, then cooked down with Grand Marnier. The sweet-n-tart drunken berries go perfectly with the creaminess of the brûlée and the crispness of caramelized sugar. Bragozzo is an Italian eatery that takes a fresh approach to old world, Italian classics. Bragozzo boasts a wood-fired grill and serves several homemade pasta options including fettuccine and gnocchi. On the edge of the kitchen there is a long bar where guests can admire the chefs in action. Andyka recommends sitting there at least once as the chef will often pass over samples of piping-hot, homemade ravioli. For the Pompano Fine Food & Wine Festival, Bragozzo will bring pasta e fagioli, a classic Italian soup made with ditalini pasta, mirepoix pancetta, chicken stock, white kidney beans, tomato and shaved Parmesan cheese. From the outside, Farradday’s (Isle’s upscale steakhouse) looks like a chic cocktail lounge. A round exterior wall made of floor-to-ceiling glass gives voyeuristic outsiders a look into the exclusive lounge, where a classy bar boasts high ceilings, a decorative stone wall, back-lit bottles and intimate, low cocktail rounds. Once one walks through the lounge to the dining room, however, the mood shifts. The dining room is lined with cavernous, private booths. Dim lighting and an impressive wine wall bring elegance to the space. Juicy steaks are Farradday’s specialty, but the menu also features a host of chicken and seafood options. For the Pompano Fine Food & Wine Festival, Farradday’s will be serving Mussels Ravigote—green lipped mussels on the half shell topped with a Ravigote sauce made of capers, gherkins, tarragon and parsley.
Papa’s Raw Bar & Seafood World BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU & LORIE GREENSPAN
JOE YERKOVICH
P
apa Hughie and his family, the Ganters, have been in the seafood business for four decades. August marks both the 40-year anniversary of Papa Hughie’s beloved restaurant Seafood World, and Papa’s 75th Birthday. Seafood World has become a Lighthouse Point institution — a mustvisit for tourists, a regular destination for locals and a hot-spot for celebrity appearances through the years (including chef Gordon Ramsay, Priscilla Presley, Steve Wynn and Muhammad Ali). In 1976 Hugh (“Papa”) and his wife Joy Ganter opened Seafood World at a time when seafood was rarely celebrated as a culinary ingredient. Papa Hughie jokes that at the time, the only people who consumed seafood were Catholics on Fridays. “People didn’t like or know enough about seafood. It was very tough for us at first,” said Papa, who had been a pilot before running Seafood World. Papa had been transporting wholesale products, including seafood, between the Bahamian islands and the mainland, and had supplied the original restaurant where Seafood World now stands. When the original owner racked up some debt with Papa, he offered Papa the restaurant as payment. Papa was reluctant at first. “I didn’t want to do it, but we decided to stick it out. We ran it as a family with four to five tables,” recalled Papa. When his plane crashed shortly after acquiring the restaurant (which was originally called Fishtails & Seafood World), the Ganter family was left with little choice but to make the restaurant their bread and butter. After having spent many years in the Bahamas, Papa and Joy
had a clear idea of the kind of restaurant they wanted — one where guests could enjoy the freshest of seafood in a relaxed, Caribbean-esque and friendly atmosphere where recipes were simple and tasteful. They wanted the sauces and spices to enhance, not overpower, the seafood. It was this original vision that has carried the business for four decades and spawned a second family restaurant next door, Papa’s Raw Bar, which was opened by Papa and Joy’s son Troy about a year-and-a-half ago. Troy’s half-brother Christopher, a local fisherman and ocean enthusiast, works to supply both restaurants with seafood, while Troy operates the front-ofthe-house at the Raw Bar. “I’m a huge foodie and I cook,” said Troy, “but I’d rather be in the front of the house. I love entertaining.” Troy, now 36, started busing tables at Seafood World when he was just 13. He went to college and swore he wouldn’t follow in the family footsteps. Instead, he started a wholesale operation, Best Stone Crabs, supplying fish, shellfish and signature salads to restaurants locally and throughout the Caribbean. Fate, however, had another plan. When a spot opened up in the strip next to Seafood World, Troy couldn’t resist. He bought the space and turned it in to an entertainment venue, raw bar and extension of the family business. The decor is an ode to Lighthouse Point pride — T-shirts from local businesses are pinned to the ceiling, photographs of regular customers line the walls and nautical souvenirs give the bar a welcoming, festive vibe. Local bands play live music regularly, and the menu is fun, with dishes such as Papa’s Gone Hibachi, Stonies by Billy Paradise and Fast Eddie’s Fried Rice, Papa’s Raw Bar boasts sushi and hibachi “better than Benihana,” said Papa Hughie. The bar sells more than 110 beers and 65 wines, features the Bimini Room, which is quickly becoming the go-to place for parties, and maintains a family-style theater. Troy also has his eyes on the lookout for a property to open a Latin fusion location in Pompano Beach and hopes to start an “Eat, Drink & Be Local” website. For the Pompano Beach Fine Food & Wine Festival, Papa’s Raw Bar will be bringing their famous sushi boat, hibachi fried rice and some sweet chili shrimp.

No matter the occasion, our beer is here for you to enjoy. We don’t make exceptions either, we’d rather set the example.
BENIHANA
Shrimp tails twirling through the air and landing skillfully into the tall chef hat of a teppanyaki master. Knives, dangerously tossed behind the back and juggled over the head. The delicious smell of fried rice and soy sauce sizzling and wafting into the air. The sounds of metal spatulas flipping grilled onions and frying zucchini spears. The smell of grilled chicken, steak and seafood. All the senses are tickled at Benihana, the leading Asian-themed restaurant chain in the world. Benihana pioneered the communal dining concept in the early 1960s: eight people share the entertaining experience, dining around a steel hibachi grill. Guests can have their own private parties, or interact with other diners watching the show. Currently, Benihana holds the record for the longest running dinner show in the world.

And we love the Western food that’s just part of being in Texas.” It’s this heritage that has informed Carrabba’s menu and continues to carry the national chain to success. TITO’S HANDMADE VODKA
Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, guests can enjoy dining at the Terrace 555 Restaurant & Bar which is a casual, comfortable restaurant overlooking a sunlit atrium and waterfall.
Produced in Austin at Texas’ oldest legal distillery, each batch of vodka is made the old-fashioned way—in pot stills. When owner Tito Beveridge entered the business, he focused on flavored vodkas. When store owners shot the flavors down, Tito set out to make the smoothest, straight vodka he could. He researched distillery techniques using old photographs of moonshiners. “From looking at all those photos I kind of just built a still that looked kind of like those stills,” Beveridge writes. “And then just kind of started cooking in that and just trial and error’d. I just kept messing with it until I got to where people liked my vodka better than the other stuff you could buy at the time. I basically kept working at it and working at it.” Tito’s will be bringing their signature vodka both straight over ice, and as a mixed drink.

WOODHOUSE
house home
AND A
A
BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU
The 2016 Pompano Fine Food & Wine Festival will benefit both the Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce and Woodhouse, Inc., a non-profit dedicated to helping adults with severe forms of Cerebral Palsy. The history of Woodhouse, Inc. is that of a dedicated, loving mother, desperate to help her adult son Irving who was struggling with Cerebral Palsy, a debilitating neurological disorder that affects movement, balance and posture. In 1975, Broward County was devoid of facilities able to properly help him. Violet Woodhouse knew there were other families and individuals in the same position, so with the help of the First Presbyterian Church in
40
Pompano Beach (the Pink Church), Violet took it upon herself to create a place where adults with Cerebral Palsy could live with dignity. She opened a comfortable home in Dania Beach for her son and others like him, providing a home with professional support and a sense of community. Forty-one years later, Woodhouse Inc. still houses three of the home’s original residents. Woodhouse’s first employee, Marsha Linville,
still serves as the organization’s director with no intention of retiring. Woodhouse, Inc. now has three facilities: Woodhouse I—the original home in Dania Beach, which houses 15 adults; Woodhouse II—a second residential facility in Pompano Beach, which houses 24 adults; and the Truman Worden Training Center, a day center where Woodhouse residents can go to learn skills outside their home environments. Collectively, Woodhouse is a desperately-needed home and family. “About two-thirds of our residents were abandoned as children,” said Woodhouse CEO, Randall Bishop. “Only a lucky third have any family involvement.” Some of Woodhouse’s residents suffered horrendous abuse before making it to Woodhouse. The Pompano Beach facility, Woodhouse II, was opened by Linville in 1983 in response to the Federal closure of a huge state institution when a series of atrocities came to light including abuse, sexual abuse, gross medical neglect and purposeful starvation of those living there. “Ms. Linville hand selected 24 beautiful people, most of whom had been abandoned at the institution when they were small children and who had been ‘nutritionally deprived’ there,” said Bishop. “She brought them to Pompano Beach to begin a new life and, due to the exceptionally good care they received, some are still with us today.” While much societal progress has been made, Woodhouse and the Cerebral Palsy community still face many struggles. “The challenges we face today are essentially the same as they have been from the beginning, which is the people we serve are vulnerable and undervalued by some in society who see them as having no worth,” said Bishop. “But our residents are people who love, worry, like good food and
good music, and want dignity and respect; just like the rest of us.” People have often been taught not to stare, “but that can make our residents feel invisible,” said Bishop. This is why Woodhouse makes a concerted effort to bring their residents into the community to go out to eat or participate in activities. Breaking the social barriers and encouraging interaction is important to re-humanizing people who have often been kept in the shadows. “Sometimes attention helps more to someone who has been invisible,” said Bishop. “They would love for someone to come and play a guitar, read a story, paint a mural, build a gazebo, grow some tomatoes, or simply hold their hand and smile.” Woodhouse welcomes volunteers to come visit Woodhouse. He also encourages people to educate themselves on the issues as the organization is often at the whim of public dollars. “There are current state officials who refer to our folks in writing as ‘non-productive citizens’ and have directed state agencies to only provide enough funding to ‘minimally sustain life.’ We at Woodhouse humbly disagree with those elected leaders,” said Bishop. As Gandhi said, “A nation’s greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members.”

Amante’s. ITALIAN Close to the Deerfield Pier, steps from the sand, stands Amante’s Italian Cuisine (and Bob’s Pizza). It’s a wonderful Italian bistro that caters to everyone. You choose from a fantastic, casual family pizza experience to an elegant dinner and everything in between. Amante’s is usually bustling: filled with locals and visiting guests there for a sumptuous, after-beach meal or pizza. The menu has all the Italian favorite pasta dishes, meat entrées and daily chef specialties. Everything is very well prepared. 2076 N.E. Second St., 954-426-1030 $$ Antonio’s Ristorante. Start with the pâté—a very generous portion served with all of the traditional accompaniments. And of course you can’t go wrong with the traditional French onion soup. The menu offers a comprehensive list of French dishes including duck a l’orange. The skin is crispy while the meat is succulent and buttery. There are plenty of other classics to choose from, including a rack of lamb, chicken Française, beef bourguignon, filet mignon au poivre and filet of sole menuière. The restaurant has a comprehensive choice of wines and the staff are knowledgeable about the offerings and steered us to a lovely pinot noir. Word to the wise: don’t miss out on the chocolate crêpes. 626 S. Federal Highway, 954-480-6464 $$$ Little Havana. CUBAN If you are looking for authentic Cuban food and music accompanied by speedy service on a busy, crowded night, then look no further. Little Havana has a very accommodating staff to match their even more accommodating menu items. They have fantastic lunch specials, and most of their dinner plates will feed two happily. Their masas de puerco frita and their Little Havana steak are two of the stand-out menu items, aside from their zesty chimichurri. Sadly, you can’t make a meal out of chimichurri, so ask for it on the side

DiningOUT FOOD BEAT BY CHRISTINE FERRIS
The Blonde Hen & Co.
The Blonde Hen & Co., which recently opened at 111 South Federal Highway in Pompano Beach, has been shut down. The family-owned cafe was closed by the city for a legacy code violation – a violation that occurred before the Blonde Hen & Co. owned the property. Owners Lynn Cingolani and her daughter Chelsea Henning are very disappointed but are exploring new locations to re-open the cafe elsewhere. As soon as they re-open, you’ll definitely want to check them out. The Blonde Hen & Co. is a not-so-light-bite coffee and tea shop with a laid back, country vibe. The cafe features a seasonal blackboard menu with organic, locally-sourced ingredients, including a quiche of the day. One must try their arugula chowder, which has been a family staple both Lynn and Chelsea fondly remember as a household dish. Chelsea has been a passionate cook since she was just five years old. Lynn prefers to bake; she creates all Blonde Hen & Co.’s pastries in house, in small batches, from scratch. In addition to great bites, coffee and tea lovers can rejoice: The Blonde Hen & Co. features Rabbit Coffee (a local coffee company from Riviera Beach that serves cold brew from the tap) and 13 types of loose-leaf teas by Rishi. Their refreshing house made iced tea marries English breakfast and green teas, plus turmeric and ginger. In the near future, Blonde Hen & Co. plans to carry local wine and beer including wine from Hen Scratch Farms Vineyard and Winery in Lake Placid, FL. Here’s to hoping Blonde Hen & Co. will open back up soon.
The Rusty Hook Tavern
The Rusty Hook Tavern in the Sands Harbor Marina features Wine Down Wednesday: guests receive 50 percent off in-house bottles or BYOB with no corkage fee. Thursdays are a festive affair: guests can devour half-price tacos, $5 Margaritas and $4 Coronas.

Mmmm. Honey. The Jam Jelly House—Located at 212 S. Federal Hwy. in Pompano Beach—features local honeys on tap, and Amish jams, jellies and pickled products. They are running a deal: buy one local raw honey and get one half price. Visit jamjellyhouse.com for more details. Federal Highway, 954-782-8111 $$ The Nauti Dawg Marina Café. AMERICAN Nestled in at the Lighthouse Point Marina, the Nauti Dawg is a local favorite. Start with the tuna wontons—crispy fried wonton wrappers topped with tuna tartare, seaweed salad, red pepper mayo, wasabi and a hit of sriracha. For a taste of New England, the lobster roll can’t be beat— a generous portion of lobster with just the right amount of mayonnaise. Of course you can’t go wrong with the fresh fish sandwich—ask what the catch of the day is. The fish Reuben is another great sandwich option—just sub in some fresh fish for the pastrami and you’ve got yourself a little healthier version of the classic. All sandwiches come with a side and while French fries are always a delicious option—the restaurant offers a tangy cucumber salad (among other choices) that provides a nice crunch to any sandwich. They are a dog friendly restaurant. 2830 N.E. 29 Ave., 954-941-0246 $$ Papa’s Raw Bar. SUSHI • SEAFOOD Situated right next door to their parent restaurant Seafood World, Papa’s Raw Bar does indeed seem like the hip child of an established restaurant. While the fresh food is the real star, the Keyes inspired décor certainly accounts for part of their charm. The restaurant serves a selection of clams and oysters on the half shell. There are also a few options for cooked oysters including the black and blue version topped with blue cheese and bacon. The menu also goes way beyond the typical raw bar offerings with inventive tacos and sliders. Papa’s also offers a wide array of sushi and sashimi. Start off with one of the towers of Van Buskirk (you’ll find a few menu items named after locals.) The bare naked lady version is a combination of spicy wahoo and tuna with tobiko and masago topped with spicy mayo and served with taro chips. They serve all your classic sushi rolls but the superstars are their specialty rolls. There are plenty of land lubber options including burgers and hibatchi offerings. And to wash it all down, they have about a zillion craft beer options and a wine list too. The Bimini Room which is adjacent to the main restaurant is available for private parties and boasts a Hemingway inspired mural—another respectful nod to the Keys. 4610 N. The casual atmosphere is created by an immense array of nautical artifacts and oddities that fill every inch of the pub. The bar is large and there are tables, too—many have ocean views. AMERICAN Named after Bob “Bru” Brudzinski , where else would you go to watch the Miami Dolphins play? Wings and other bar food available. 235 S. Federal Highway, 954-785-2227 $ Calypso Restaurant and Raw Bar. CARIBBEAN Calypso is one of those hidden places locals love—but try to keep it a secret for fear of not being able to get a table. With its Caribbean theme, the place isn’t fancy, but they serve inspired West Indian cuisine. Start with the Jamaican fish cakes (called stamp and go on the menu) —a combination of salt cod fish, onions, sweet red and green peppers with a hint of curry seasoning and deep fried. To remind yourself why stuffed mushrooms were once the star of the appetizer world, try the version at Calypso—fresh mushrooms baked with a seafood stuffing— with real seafood—not seafood inspired breadcrumbs. Since it is a Caribbean place, you will find plenty of conch on the menu, from chowder to fritters to a conch salad—an old Bahamian recipe with fresh vegetables and citrus juice. They serve a few great cutters‚ (island speak for sandwich) and our favorite is the namesake Calypso cutter which is sautéed shrimp and mushrooms with garlic butter, and cheddar cheese stuffed into a hollowed out kaiser roll. You can also

bring your own fresh caught fish and they will prepare it to your liking. If you’re a seafood fan, you must put Calypso on your restaurant rotation‚ but not to worry, they serve a great burger and have plenty of chicken, pork and lamb options too. 1299 S. Federal Highway, 954-782-2688 $$

You don’t find too many authentic German restaurants around town. So when you’re looking for a change in your restaurant rotation, take a trip back to the old country at Checkers Old Munchen. The restaurant’s exposed wood framing is reminiscent of the German half-timbered architectural style and the walls are lined with classic German beer steins. For a traditional German meal, try the the wienerschnitzel—it’s devine—a lightly breaded veal cutlet (or pork) sautéed in lemon butter and topped with homemade brown gravy. The entrées are served with your choice of two side dishes. The spaetzle (German noodles) are a real homemade treat and not to be missed—throw a little of that brown gravy on them and they could be a meal unto themselves. The red cabbage is both classically sweet and sour and there are other options too including potato dumplings, potato salad and even hot potato salad. As we looked around, we got the feeling that most of the patrons are returning customers—which of course is a great sign. And the next time we get a hankering for some schnitzel, we know where to go. Imbibe to your hearts content with their wide assortment of German beers. 2209 E. Atlantic Blvd., 954-785-7565 $$ Chez Porky’s. BARBECUE A low-key spot serving a bunch of southern favorites. 105 S.W. review
There are two kinds of people in the world: people who worship at the alter of blue cheese, and those who don’t care for the cultured treat. To the first group: we would advise you to have dinner at Gianni’s. Each dinner is served with a plentiful basket of garlic rolls and a house salad, which is a wedge of a romaine heart served with a tangy balsamic vinaigrette and topped with a generous portion of blue cheese. For the latter group: Gianni’s will gladly hold the blue cheese or serve it on the side. Entering Gianni’s is like stepping into a Martin Scorsese film. This place is old school. You won’t find any hipster appetizers or trendy entreés. In fact, if you’re tired of a world filled with kale, then Gianni’s is the perfect antidote. The menu is full of everyone’s favorite mainstream Italian meals, from traditional eggplant rollatini to their popular Osso Buco. The last time we were there we tried two of their specials for the evening (after devouring our salads and garlic rolls). The first was a fresh piece of Florida grouper served in a fresh and chunky tomato sauce with clams and mussels too. The other can best be described as a chicken asteroid—boneless chicken breast pounded thin then rolled around spinach, zucchini and cheese. The chicken’s perfectly-round sphere was almost as impressive as the taste. Naturally the entreés are served with a side of spaghetti. The portions are generous and they are happy to wrap up your leftovers. The staff are notably professional, courteous and attentive which makes the whole experience that much more fun. Mangiere!

Financial Resolutions for the New Year It’s time for New Year’s resolutions. This year, why not make a few financial ones? For starters, resolve to boost your contributions to your retirement plans, such as your IRA and your 401(k). These tax-advantaged accounts can be good options for your retirement savings strategy. Also, try to reduce your debt load. It’s not always easy, but the lower your debt payments, the more money you’ll have available to invest. Here’s another resolution: Build an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a liquid account. Such a fund will help you avoid dipping into long-term investments for emergencies, like a new furnace or major car repair. Another key resolution: Make sure your protection needs are being met with the proper amounts of life and disability insurance. Finally, resolve not to overreact to market volatility. You’ll help yourself greatly by following an appropriate investment strategy in every market environment. Work to turn these resolutions into realities. Your efforts could pay off well beyond 2014.

The Sobel Family loves keeping their vehicles Squeaky Clean! Mike Sobel is running for the City of Pompano Beach Commission, District 1, on November 8th. (Danny Green, Jeff Sobel, Mike Sobel, Jeanne Sobel, Carolina Ng and Brian Sobel)
MR. SQUEAKY CAR WASH is owned and operated for the past 10
years by a Lighthouse Point family. Owners Richard and Lynn Sasso, both attorneys, left the day to day practice of law to launch Mr. Squeaky, with the goal of making Mr. Squeaky one of the best car washes in the nation. Mr. Squeaky has been voted “1 of the Top 50 Car Washes in the USA” by Modern Car Care Magazine, the only South Florida car wash to receive this honor. From top to bottom, Mr. Squeaky is a family business. Their two children, Stella and Tyler, along with thousands of other kids visiting with their parents, love the multi-sensory experience of the 135’ long car wash tunnel that includes colorful soaps, a high pressure Arctic Blast rinse, soft cloth scrubs and Tornado Dryers. With washes starting at just $9, including unlimited FREE use of vacuums, there is no true competitor in all of South Florida. From Buicks to Bentleys, every car is treated with white glove service that has made Mr. Squeaky famous and the go-to place for hundreds of thousands of raving fans. Lynn Sasso explains the philosophy at Mr. Squeaky: “We wanted to create a family-friendly car wash. Our goal is to give each customer a squeaky clean car and a smile on their face!”
