Pompano Beach Gets New State-Of-The-Art Lifeguard Towers

Eight colorful, state-of-the-art lifeguard towers have been installed on the city’s beach. They replaced the eight standard white fiberglass towers that had stood there for years. The new lifeguard towers are higher than the old ones and have walk-around balconies, which gives the lifeguards better viewing capabilities of the ocean and the beach. The old lifeguard towers would get very hot inside, said Pompano Beach Fire Chief John

Jurgle, but the new towers have tinted glass and windows that open to provide better ventilation. During the summer months, the lifeguards work 10-hour shifts and typically stay in the towers for three to fou hours at a time. “That’s their office,” said Jurgle. “That’s where they spend the majority of their day. If it’s uncomfortable, it makes it difficult for them to do their job.” Jurgle said the new towers are much more comfortable and

accommodating, so the lifeguards “can stay focused and protect people’s lives while they’re in the water.” The new towers are made of more durable materials and have safer access points for the lifeguards to get up into the tower, as well as get down from the tower to perform a rescue. The interior area where the lifeguard sits is larger, so on days when the beach is exceptionally crowded, such as holidays, >>>

Pompano Beach Gets New State-Of-The-Art Lifeguard Towers <<< there’s enough room to put two lifeguards in a tower, if necessary. “You could absolutely not do that in the old ones,” said Jurgle. In addition, each lifeguard tower has storage space, unlike the old towers. The lifeguards can securely store their rescue boards and other lifesaving equipment directly under their towers, so when they arrive

in addition to a number on the side of each one, there is also a sea life picture – such as a pelican, turtle or fish – which is not just a decoration, but serves a safety purpose, as does the color scheme of the towers. One of the situations lifeguards respond to most frequently is lost children who have been separated from their parents. With the new towers, when

in the morning, everything they need is right there. Before, all the equipment had to be taken out to the towers every day from the ocean rescue building. “It’s a much more efficient way of opening up the beach in the morning,” said Jurgle. There are 17 full-time lifeguards, and about 20 to 25 part-time lifeguards employed at any one time. One of the most important features of the new towers is that,

families arrive at the beach, parents can tell their children that if they get lost, they should come back to the green tower that has the turtle on it, for example. “A lot of thought was put into painting our towers different colors, but most importantly, using sea life on the towers rather than just the standard numbering system,” said Jurgle. The installation of the new lifeguard towers began in February

and took several months to complete. The cost was $976,000, with 90% coming from the city’s G.O. bond and 10% from the capital improvement fund. “We’re very proud of the design of our new lifeguard towers,” said Jurgle. “We believe it accentuates the positive aspects of our beach and finishes it off, as far as making it a true destination.”

The ocean rescue building, which is the lifeguard headquarters, will also be getting a makeover. The plan is to reconfigure the ground floor of the building and to add a second story. The project is currently in the design phase and is going through the city’s approval process. It will be partially funded by the city’s G.O. Bond. Construction is not expected to start until November 2020, and may be completed as early as September 2021. Y

New Isle Casino Parking Garage Will Pave Way for Live! Resorts Pompano A five-story parking garage with 1,505 parking spaces will be constructed on the property of the Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park to accommodate the existing casino and future expansions. The Isle Casino property is being redeveloped by The Cordish Companies in partnership with Eldorado Resorts, which owns the property. It will be one of the largest construction projects in Pompano Beach history. The goal is to transform the approximately 220acre site into Live! Resorts Pompano, an “urban village” with a live, work, play environment – including entertainment, hotels, restaurants, retail, residential and office space. Last month, the building design for the Isle Casino Parking Garage was approved by the architectural appearance committee, and the site plan was approved by the planning and zoning board. The project can now be submitted for building permits. A significant portion of the Isle Casino property is currently surface parking lot areas. The new Isle Casino Parking Garage will serve the existing casino, and is not technically part of the Live! Resorts Pompano mixed-use development,

but it is being built to free up some of the surface parking areas so they can be developed by The Cordish Companies. The 572,564 square-foot garage will be located off the northern access road at 777 Isle of Capri Drive on what is currently a surface parking lot on the east side of the existing casino building. Approximately 136 existing surface parking spaces will be demolished to accommodate the garage, which will occupy an area of roughly one acre. The new parking structure will include a valet drop-off and pick-up area, a tour bus drop-off

area, controlled valet access into the garage, four-lane access to guest and VIP parking within the garage, and a separate truck route for tractor-trailers to access the existing loading dock behind the Isle Casino. An elevator core will provide access to a future casino building expansion. Based on suggestions made by the architectural appearance committee at its meeting in March, the garage design was modified in order to break up the long façade. Wall panels, metalwork and other elements were added to create a look that is more like a building than a parking garage. A site plan for an outdoor smoking terrace addition to the casino was also recently approved. Components of the Live! Resorts Pompano project that are currently under the city’s review are site plans for a jai alai fronton in the location of the existing grandstand (which will be razed), and a Top Golf facility on the northwest corner of the Isle Casino site. Papamigos is Coming to Old Town this Month Papamigos, a new restaurant being planned for the Old Town district of Pompano Beach, is expected to open in the summer of 2021, but in the meantime, starting this month, Lauren Grosso and Brian Faeth, the chef owner-operators, will be setting up a food truck next to the location of their future restaurant. The food truck mobile kitchen will operate in Old Town until the Papamigos restaurant opens in the currently vacant space at 44 NE First St. The restaurant will also occupy an adjacent patio area overlooking the Civic Plaza fountain. The permitting process is underway for the buildout of the restaurant and patio space. Grosso and Faeth expect to have the food truck up and running no later than the second week of July, but it could start operating as early as the first week, they said. It will be set up in the parking lot fronting Atlantic Boulevard, just south of the restaurant space. The Papamigos mantra will be: ‘Your local joint to eat, drink and be loco,’ and the restaurant will be highlighting ‘tacos, sushi, tequila and good vibes.’ In keeping with the theme of the restaurant, the Papamigos food truck will specialize in “mexi-crasian” street food, including sushi and tacos. “We’re really excited to meet the locals and be part of the redevelopment of Old Town Pompano,” said Grosso and Faeth. “We can’t wait to share the exciting new flavors of Papamigos.” The Papamigos food truck menu won’t be as extensive as the restaurant menu, but “it’s a taste of what’s to come,” said Faeth.

in Lighthouse Point. Grosso and Faeth, who are engaged to be married, will be working side by side at their new venture in Old Town, an area that is being developed as an arts and entertainment district. “Brian and I are a great team,” said Grosso. “We work very seamlessly, and that’s definitely an important element.” "We're excited that they're coming," said Kimberly Vazquez, project manager for the Pompano

The food truck will be operating under COVID-19 safety protocols, including social distancing and sanitizing. In the beginning, the food truck will be open only for dinner, from 4pm until 9pm or 10pm. Lunch will likely be served once some outdoor seating is offered. Within the next few months, the patio area adjacent to the restaurant space will be built out with a concrete slab. The food truck will then be moved onto the

slab, alongside the south end of the building, and some tables and chairs will be added, including in the fountain area. Papamigos is already offering catering and is taking orders, including for July 4. Once the restaurant opens, the food truck will be removed from the site and used for catering and other events. Papamigos is a concept of Grosso’s cousin, Troy Ganter, whose family owns Papa’s Raw Bar and Papa’s Fresh Market (originally called Papa Hughie’s Seafood World)

We're working with them in any way possible to help them get on-site and operational." Lovin’ Oven No Longer Coming Pompano Beach Fishing Village Plans to add a catering hall and event facility operated by New York-based Lovin’ Oven Catering to the Pompano Beach Fishing Village have been canceled, according to city officials. The proposed facility would have been a place to hold weddings, private parties, corporate meetings and other events. Although no official reason for the change in plans was given by the City, Lovin’ Oven or the developer, members of the community, as well as the East CRA Advisory Committee, had expressed concern about the height of the proposed building, which was higher than they had anticipated. Last year, Lovin’ Oven Catering, which operates high-end properties in New York and South Carolina, signed a lease for a parcel located on the southeast corner of the Pompano Beach Fishing Village site, just west of the pier. The Pompano Beach Fishing Village development project includes the Pompano Beach House and Oceanic restaurants, and the Pier Parking Garage. Still under construction are Lucky Fish Beach Bar and Grill, Alvin Island beach goods store, BurgerFi, Kilwins, Cannoli Kitchen and a dualbranded Hilton hotel. The event space was to occupy the last parcel in the Fishing Village that has yet to be filled. Tim Hernandez, a partner of Pompano Pier Associates, the developer of the Pompano Beach Fishing Village, believed the Lovin’ Oven venue was going to be “a game-changer for Pompano Beach.” He anticipated the facility would

have a positive economic impact on the city by drawing people to Pompano Beach, who might otherwise have held their functions in West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale or Miami. “This will go down as one of the biggest missed opportunities in Pompano’s history,” said Hernandez. City Commissioner Andrea McGee of District 1, where the Fishing Village is located, disagreed. McGee said she “wasn’t of the mindset that the event space was the best use for the parcel.” “We’ve put so much energy into getting the Fishing Village right, that it needs to fit with the rest of the concept,” she said. “We’re creating this very pedestrianfriendly, accessible beach area.” McGee said an event facility wouldn’t be a building for the general public to access, only those attending an event hosted there. McGee would like to see the parcel used for “an interactive restaurant and/or retail space to provide more entertainment opportunities for residents and visitors coming to our beach.” “Pompano could definitely use more ballroom-style event space,

but I don’t think this particular parcel is the right location for it,” she said. McGee said her constituents had expressed concern to her regarding the use of the parcel for an event space or catering hall, the height of the proposed building, traffic and parking. Those concerns were also voiced at public city meetings, particularly by residents who live in the vicinity of the Fishing Village. The building’s proposed height was 41 feet 10 inches to the roof deck, and 55 feet to the top of the stairwell and elevator tower. The height of the retractable roof over the roof deck was 58 feet. The building would have been lower than the five-story Hilton hotel and the Pier Parking Garage, but higher than Oceanic, the Beach House and the rest of the buildings on the site, which stand at about 35 and 37 feet. Although the current zoning of the Fishing Village site allows for buildings with a maximum height of 58 feet, the expectation was that the facility would be on a scale in keeping with the lower buildings on the site. Concern was also raised >>>

City Beat

BY MARIE PULEO

Pompano Beach Fishing Pier Now Open for Fishing Fishing is now allowed on the Fisher Family Pier, which opened for sightseeing only on May 18. While there is currently no charge for pedestrians, there is a $6 fee for fishing. Anglers are also eligible for discounted parking at the Pier Parking Garage. Parking passes can be validated by the pier attendant, which will allow for all day parking at the garage for a flat $5 rate. Free admission for sightseers will end on July 19. Starting July 20, a $2 per person per day fee will be charged for pedestrians. Annual $20 family sightseeing passes will also go on sale after July 19.

The city is also working on creating an annual fishing pass. According to Pompano Beach spokesperson Sandra King, they “don’t know when it will be introduced, or how much it will cost. We anticipate developing a recommendation to the city manager in a few months after we’ve had a chance to analyze attendance and costs.” The pier is open every day from 7am to 10 pm. Currently, only 200 people are allowed on the pier at one time, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Visitors are required to wear facial coverings and practice

According to city officials, the development agreement for the Fishing Village site only allows a restaurant and retail use on the parcel that Lovin’ Oven had intended to lease, not an event venue. Even though a “hall for hire” is a permitted use under the zoning of the Fishing Village site, the development agreement dictates what is to be developed on the site. An amendment to the development agreement would be needed to accommodate an event venue or catering hall use. vacant parcel, a city official said, “the city is open to other compatible uses.” Hernandez did not provide any options under consideration for the parcel. Earlier this year, the city’s economic development council said it was in favor of the parcel being used for an event space. One reason was it would generate less traffic than a restaurant because there would be less turnover. McGee said that while a catering facility might have less traffic throughout the day, cars would be arriving and leaving the event space all at once, making it much more congested at those times. Several changes had been made to the building design based on feedback from residents. The loading

dock, originally planned to face the Ocean Monarch condominium to the south, was moved to the west side of the building. In addition, the building itself was moved further west, so a circular driveway could be added in front of the entrance facing Pompano Beach Boulevard. The project was scheduled to go to the architectural appearance committee and the planning and zoning board in April, but in March, Lovin’ Oven made the decision not to pursue its plans for the event space. “No one had bad intentions,” said Michael Scollan, Vice President of Lovin’ Oven. “It was due to a confluence of factors. Sometimes things work out, and sometimes they don’t. There are no hard feelings.” Y

In Case You Missed It

No Shoes, No Shorts, No Mask, No Service BY JEFF LEVINE I WAS THRILLED TO FINALLY TAKE A STROLL ALONG THE NEW POMPANO BEACH PIER THE FIRST WEEK IT OPENED. AFTER STARING AT IT FOR MANY, MANY MONTHS, IT WAS NICE TO walk it. It's very impressive and should help make the Pompano Beach Fishing Village complex a local hot spot. (I use hot spot in the traditional way- meaning people will like it, as opposed to the new more deadly coronavirus definition.)

The city opened up the Pier on May 18. They set rules requiring social distancing and facial covering. To ensure this, they have staff check to make sure you're wearing a mask upon entering. However, I was amazed to see almost half the crowd decided it was okay to take off the masks once they passed the checkpoint. And this, my friends, is why we can't have nice things. Bringing a mask to the pier and then taking it off once you get there is like leaving the condom on the nightstand. Completely pointless.

26 pointpubs.com •

POINT! PUBLISHING

I am amazed at the number of people who think it is too inconvenient to wear a mask. I find wearing pants uncomfortable, and yet I still put them on whenever I go out of the house (inside is a different story, much to my wife's chagrin). I don't understand people saying wearing a mask violates their rights. You are required to wear shoes when you go places. I don't hear a lot of complaints from anti-shoe vigilantes. We live in a country where we continuously balance individual rights and public safety. You can't drive drunk. You must stop at stop signs and wear a seat belt. Oh my lord, the tyranny of it all. If you think you are proving a point by not wearing a mask, I'm not sure what the point is. Are you afraid it will make you seem like a wimp? Remember John Wayne? The definition of rugged American individualism regularly wore a facial covering. Not to mention Spiderman and the Ninja Turtles. We all want our economy going again. We need to do it safely. Wearing a mask, along with social distancing and washing your hands regularly, are the best ways to keep people safe enough for society to return to normal. Not wearing a mask is only fake going back to normal. It will increase the likelihood of a resurgence of the dreaded coronavirus and a deeper economic collapse. Think of it like the vegetables your mom made you eat when you were young. You turned out okay. As kids, we used to say, "It's a free country," whenever we didn't want to do something. But then we got older and learned to be a responsible member of society means sometimes sacrificing for the greater good. So, if you want to be a patriot, wear the damn mask and observe social distancing. Our nation's health and economic rebound depend on it. Y

It Dawned on Me

At Least We Have Pound Cake CELEBRATING THE FOURTH OF JULY

BY DAWNE RICHARDS AS I WRITE THIS, I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO OUR BEACHES SORT OF REOPENING IN A FEW DAYS, SO THAT I CAN WALK the shoreline in the middle of what seems to be seven straight days of monsoons. Of course, what I’m really hoping for is that, come July 4th, we'll be watching impressive fireworks, but that prospect is looking dimmer by the day. I love Independence Day. All four of my grandparents came here from Greece in the early 1900s, through Ellis Island, like so many others at that time. They embraced this country and produced children who loved America and all it stood for; those children lived through the Depression, fought in World War II, and did everything they could to make sure that their children understood the value of the American dream. My mother had four siblings, all serving in World War II simultaneously; the local paper featured a story about my grandmother with a photo of my four brave aunts and uncles. It remains a favorite family story. So how do I honor their memories, their legacy? With pound cake. Really. Pound cake is the foundational ingredient in the “flag cake” that you’ve probably seen on various recipe sites. I started making this years ago; I still reference the little coupon-sized recipe clipped out of some magazine or another back then. The flag cake has distinct advantages over many other desserts, the most important of which is that it doesn’t require a sourdough starter or, for that matter, toilet paper, two things which seem to be in perpetually short supply nowadays. Kudos to people baking their own bread. Really. I admire you and no I’m not snickering. I’m busy collecting my yesI’m-really-using-all-these-highly-processed-ingredients to make our flag cake. I’m sure there’s a way to make this with

“better” ingredients, but the last time my daughters tried to pull a fast one on me and make “real” green bean casserole, I was tempted to channel my inner toddler and flip my plate at the Thanksgiving table. I’ll take Canned Green Beans for $500, kids, thanks. But I digress, as usual. Here are my “Three Top Things to Know” about the flag cake: 1. It’s pretty! Ish. My cake won’t win any awards, but it IS unmistakably an American flag. 2. It’s tasty. Really, what’s not to like about Cool Whip and pound cake? And between the blueberries (stars) and strawberries (stripes), you can feel virtuous about getting your serving of fruit. 3. You cannot – I can’t stress this enough – have enough Cool Whip on hand. I’d advise getting at least twice the amount specified. Things just seem to happen to the Cool Whip during cake prep, and the last thing you want is to run short. So this year, with or without fireworks, cookouts or beach time, I know this much: on the morning of July 4th, I’ll be assembling the flag cake. In fact, I’d better go get those pound cakes and Cool Whip now, just in case. As with all the best ingredients, they freeze well. Y

Financial Resolutions for the New Year It’s time for New Year’s resolutions. This year, why not make a few financial ones? For starters, resolve to boost your contributions to your retirement plans, such as your IRA and your 401(k). These tax-advantaged accounts can be good options for your retirement savings strategy. Also, try to reduce your debt load. It’s not always easy, but the lower your debt payments, the more money you’ll have available to invest. Here’s another resolution: Build an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a liquid account. Such a fund will help you avoid dipping into long-term investments for emergencies, like a new furnace or major car repair. Another key resolution: Make sure your protection needs are being met with the proper amounts of life and disability insurance. Finally, resolve not to overreact to market volatility. You’ll help yourself greatly by following an appropriate investment strategy in every market environment. Work to turn these resolutions into realities. Your efforts could pay off well beyond 2014.

The Chicken of my Dreams PHOTO AND RECIPE BY MRS KOSSENFLOFFER ADAPTED FROM MELISSA CLARK, COOKINGNYTIMES.COM

PERUVIAN CHICKEN

Almost every Thursday night in my twenties, I had dinner with friends at a tiny hole-in-the-wall restaurant specializing in Peruvian chicken on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The restaurant didn’t have a liquor license, so we always brought a bottle (or two) of moderately priced red wine. It was the perfect spot for a young woman on a budget — reasonably priced dinner and BYOB. After I moved to Florida, I longed for that chicken — the crispy-salty-skin, the juicy-tender meat. It was all just a dream until I read Melissa Clark’s recipe for Peruvian chicken on the New York Times cooking website. The following is adapted from her method — which is spot on. Dreams do come true.

Peruvian Chicken INGREDIENTS FOR THE CHICKEN 6 garlic cloves, finely grated or minced 1/3 cup soy sauce 1 tablespoon aji Amarillo paste (or sriracha, or red pepper flakes in a pinch) 2 tablespoons lime juice 1 teaspoon paprika or chili powder 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper ½ teaspoon kosher salt 4 pounds bone-in, skin-on chicken parts Olive oil, as needed FOR THE SAUCE 1 cup cilantro leaves 2 to 3 jalapeños, seeded ¼ cup mayonnaise (see note) 1 garlic clove, chopped 2 tablespoons lime juice, OR more to taste ¾ teaspoon kosher salt ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard ½ tablespoon aji Amarillo (or sriracha, or dash of hot sauce in a pinch) 1 teaspoon honey ½ teaspoon ground cumin ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil PREPARATION To make the marinade whisk all the ingredients except the olive oil together in a large bowl. Add enough olive oil so the chicken will be covered in the marinade. Then add in the chicken and make sure all the chicken is coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or up to 12. Preheat the over to 450 degrees. Take the chicken out of the marinade and shake off excess. Pat chicken dry with a paper towel. Arrange on a sheet pan and drizzle with olive oil. Bake for 35-40 minutes (the breasts might be done at about 25-30 minutes) until chicken is cooked through and the skin is golden brown and crispy. Remove from oven, tent with foil and let it rest for about 10 minutes. To make the sauce, throw everything except the oil into a blender and blend until smooth. Slowly drizzle in the olive oil. Taste and adjust seasoning. You might want more salt or lime or heat or honey. Serve with extra lime wedges. Note: You can also make this sauce using feta cheese. I didn’t have any in the house, so I used mayonnaise. Also, my sister made this and cooked it on the grill— she says it was a big hit. This goes super well with roasted plantains, but as I am trying to limit trips to the store, I roasted some sweet potatoes and Yukon golds that I had on hand. Y

Local photographer Catherin McKeever captures the natural beauty of our local landscape. As she writes on her website, “God has blessed us with an amazing planet. Each new day is to be cherished. Explore the landscape of local regions as they come alive. Envision the glorious beginnings of another new day or the magnificent culmination as a sun recedes below the horizon. Imagine the sounds of the ocean waves as they roll ashore. The wonders of watching a color-filled sky to the majesty of dynamic lightning bolt structures; each experience is breathtaking unto itself.” JULY 2020 • pointpubs.com

Checkers Old Munchen. GERMAN When you’re looking for a

change in your restaurant rotation, take a trip back to the old country at Checkers Old Munchen. The restaurant’s exposed wood framing is reminiscent of the German half-timbered architectural style and the walls are lined with classic German beer steins. For a traditional German meal, try the wiener schnitzel — it’s divine — a lightly breaded veal cutlet sautéed in lemon butter and topped with homemade brown gravy. The spaetzle (German noodles) are a real homemade treat and not to be missed — throw a little of that brown gravy on them and they could be a meal unto themselves. The red cabbage is both classically sweet and sour and there are other side options too including potato dumplings, potato salad and even hot potato salad. As you look around, you can’t help but get the feeling that most of the patrons are returning customers. And the next time we get a hankering for some schnitzel, we know where to go. Imbibe to your hearts content with their wide assortment of German beers. 2209 E. Atlantic Blvd., 954-785-7565 $$

Comfort Lunch The Chicken Box & More

Who doesn't need some comfort food right about now? I don't know about you, but after months and months of cooking for my family of four — three meals a day — I was ready for some relief. Enter the Chicken Box & More. This mom-and-pop spot with just a couple of tables serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and does a robust take-out business. We enjoyed a socially distanced feast at the home of some friends with take-out from the Chicken Box. The

shrimp and grits with scrambled eggs are a top-notch breakfast or a perfect "breakfast-for-dinner" option. The shrimp are sauteed with peppers and onions and served over buttery-cheesy grits and scrambled eggs. The fried pork chops were delicately coated and crispy. We tried them with a classic potato salad and collard greens. The greens were stellar — they were juicy and perfectly seasoned with bits of pork supplying a pleasing heft. And

who doesn't love a juicy fried chicken wing? You never go wrong with a plate of wings, and The Chicken Box serves several flavors for your wingconsuming pleasure. We will surely be back for more. But if you are searching for a solidly authentic taste of comfort, the meatloaf is a must. The hotel features three golf courses, the WaterSound Beach Club, paddle boarding, tennis, and kayaks and canoes through its partnership with St. Joe Hospitality. If you need a touch of pampering — and who doesn’t — a trip to the hotel spa will leave you refreshed. Like all exceptional hotel bars, The Havana Beach Bar & Grill offers refuge from the world.
