Demolition of Historic Doctor’s Office Causes Shock in the Community

Members of the Pompano Beach Historical Society and the Pompano Beach Historic Preservation Board, as well as elected city officials, were shocked to find out last month that the 1920s medical office of Dr. George Sterling McClellan – Pompano Beach’s first doctor – had been bulldozed.

The Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) had plans to preserve the building and

convert it into a café, wine bar or sandwich shop in Old Town, an area the CRA is developing as an arts and entertainment destination.

Last December, the CRA Board, which is made up of the city commissioners, voted to direct CRA staff to turn the proposed plans into a project and explore ways to move forward.

The plans included moving the 663-square-foot structure from its

Demolition of Historic Doctor’s Office Causes Shock in the Community CONTINUED

<<< Old Town Square, was going to donate the doctor’s office to the city, rather than demolish it.

On the morning of Sept. 10, Commissioner Tom McMahon received a phone call from a member of the Pompano Beach Historical Society informing him that the demolition of the historic doctor’s office was in progress. He arrived at the scene and stood in front of the bulldozer to try to stop it, until he was told the police would be called. At that point, only one wall of the building remained.

“That night I didn’t sleep,” said McMahon, speaking to the CRA Board at its meeting on Sept. 15. “It was beyond understandable.” McMahon is a former president of the Pompano Beach Historical Society.

City Manager Greg Harrison, who serves as the CRA Executive Director, explained that, earlier in the year, staff determined it could not come up with the estimated $400,000 needed for the McClellan office relocation.

“The weakness here is that by the time this all came to a reality about the funding, COVID hit in March and we did not communicate this funding issue to the Board of Directors,” said Harrison.

The CRA Board did not hold its monthly meetings during the period of March through June due to COVID-19, and was on hiatus in August.

Harrison said the developer paid $2.2 million for four buildings and had clear title to the property, and could have done what he wanted with the McClellan office at any time.

“It is an unfortunate set of circumstances,” Harrison continued.

your attention, I’m sure it would have raised enough attention to the building that we might have been able to come up with a project to try to figure out how to salvage it.”

Harrison noted that the building had become “a real problem” for the developer because It was being used for prostitution, and as an encampment for “unsavory folks.”

“They just needed to tear it down, and that’s what happened on Sept.

10,” said Harrison.

“Obviously, this is just a tremendous error,” said Mayor Rex Hardin. “It’s a colossal mess up.”

Harrison said he would like the Pompano Beach Historical Society and the Pompano Beach Historic Preservation Board to work together and come up with a fitting memorial for the doctor’s office.

McMahon asked that the city look at ways to remedy the situation, including building a replica of the office building façade and placing it at Founders Park, and preserving an inlay of Dr. McClellan’s name that is

on the sidewalk in front of the spot where his office building once stood.

McMahon also said there need to be checkpoints added to the city’s system that would require the city manager to sign off on demolition permits for very old buildings.

Vice Mayor Barry Moss pressed Harrison for details on how the demolition of the McClellan office building came about.

“I really hate to say it, but my trust has been shaken,” said Moss.

“I’m going to be looking at things with a closer eye moving forward.”

Even though the McClellan office wasn’t a designated historic site on a national or local registry, it was listed in the 2013 Pompano Beach Historic Sites Survey.

“I know nobody intended for this to happen, but it did happen,” said Hardin. “We have got tremendously talented staff and dedicated individuals who do absolutely fantastic work for this city, but even with all that, this fell through the cracks.” >>>

“We really needed an answer on whether it was going to be moved or knocked down,” said Adache.

Adache said that he reached out to the CRA in July to find out the building’s status and was told there was no funding available to relocate it, and he could move forward with plans to demolish it.

Adache then submitted for a demolition permit approval from the building department.

“We waited as long as we could, but Dr. George Sterling McClellan’s original office building was demolished in September.

Adam Adache, of Cavache Properties, said that although the structure wasn’t a designated historic site on a registry, “it is something that I think, unanimously, we all wanted to try to save.”

Adache said the vacant building eventually became a nuisance in the neighborhood. People were breaking

obviously, we needed to move on.”

Adache said he got a demolition permit approval on Aug. 25, but because an old property survey was in the system, a permit revision form had to be filled out and a new survey uploaded. Final approval for the demolition permit was received on Sept. 9, and the building was

bulldozed on Sept. 10.

Adache said he hopes to start construction on the Old Town Square development within the next two to three months.

Dr. George McClellan came to Pompano in 1921 from Wellborn, a town in northwest Florida.

His house was built right next door to his medical office, and he lived there with his wife Novice, and their daughter and three sons. His wife served as his nurse and ran the office. His office building, made of reinforced concrete and steel, survived the 1926 hurricane and sheltered six local families, including the McClellans, who deemed it safer than their wooden house.

George McClellan’s oldest son, Sterling McClellan, served the country during World War II as a fighter pilot, and was shot down during a mission over Germany.

The American Legion Post #142, located behind Pompano Beach City Hall, is named in his honor. George McClellan’s son William served as a gunner in World War II, and was also shot down. He managed to survive imprisonment at the infamous Stalag 17 POW camp.

A letter from the Board of Directors of the Pompano Beach Historical Society that was read during the CRA Board meeting described the demolition of the McClellan office building as a “tragic destruction” and a “permanent loss of a significant piece of Pompano’s history.”

The letter said the historical society intends to remain actively involved as future steps are considered to mark the contribution of Dr. McClellan and his family to Pompano Beach. Y

Twin-Tower Project Coming to Corner of A1A and Atlantic Boulevard A large-scale residential, hotel and commercial project planned for 3350 E. Atlantic Boulevard, on the southwest corner of Atlantic Boulevard and A1A, is moving ahead after years of being on hold. The project, called Atlantic 3350, was given approval for development in 2012, but that approval has since expired.

A site plan application for Atlantic 3350 was resubmitted earlier this year and is currently going through the city’s review process. The resubmitted site plan is consistent with the original 2012 site plan, with some updates to current standards.

The project consists of one 19-story hotel tower with 110 two-bedroom and one-bedroom extended stay suites (180 total beds), and one 21-story residential tower with 77 condominium units.

The project is designed around an existing Walgreens store located on the south-central portion of the property. Part of the 2-acre property is also currently occupied by the Rayvan building.

According to the site plan, the hotel tower will be located on the northwest corner of the site (the southeast corner of Atlantic Boulevard and Hibiscus Avenue).

The ground level includes a corner entry lobby, a gift shop, plus 1,000 square feet of retail space fronting Atlantic Boulevard. A vehicular drop-off area along the east side of the tower is accessible from Atlantic Boulevard.

The residential tower, located at the northeast corner of the site, consists of five two-bedroom units per floor; then reduces to four two-bedroom units at the top three floors (units range in size from 1,700

square feet to 2,200 square feet).

The ground level includes a streetfront lobby and a 6,675-square-foot retail space and a restaurant with an outdoor dining area fronting Atlantic Boulevard and A1A. These areas are accessed by a paver arcade that wraps around the building.

At the base of the towers is a fifth-level pedestal deck with shared hotel and residential amenities, including a pool and Jacuzzi, a pool bar, a hotel restaurant, a large banquet facility and a fitness center – all surrounded by extensive landscaping in planters and glass rails along the perimeter.

Below the towers and pedestal deck, and above the pedestrian street level, there are three covered parking levels with 328 parking spaces. The garage-level facades are a combination of decorative louvers for light and ventilation into the

Two levels of the parking deck extend over the existing Walgreens, which is to remain at its current location on the site, but would be rebuilt within the southeast corner of the parking garage. The north side of the new Walgreens would have an interior ground-level drivethrough lane that is entirely located within the garage structure. There would be required on-grade parking in front of the store (22 spaces), with the balance of required parking proposed to be located within the parking deck above the store.

Twin-Tower Project Coming to Corner of A1A and Atlantic Boulevard <<< The white finishes are accentuated with green glass rails and window systems.

The 77 units in the residential tower are “flex” units that the Pompano Beach City Commission allocated to the developer in 2012, and which the developer kept active through various means until, due to extenuating circumstances in the company, the units expired in 2017.

According to city documents, no new flex allocations are allowed on the barrier island, where the project site is located, so reaffirmation of the units and amending the construction deadline was the only avenue to enable the project to be built on the property.

The project site is owned by Atlantic 3350, LLC. In June 2019, Atlantic 3350, LLC, entered into Renderings of the Twin Tower project in Pompano Beach

In September 2019, the city commission gave its approval to reaffirm the allocation of the units and to provide an extension for a building permit.

Richard Berrie, of Berrie Architecture & Design, told the city commission that the project was designed too early after the recession, but now is an opportunity to proceed with the development.

The city has a pool of flex units that it can use as a tool to accommodate and expedite desirable development and redevelopment projects. The flex units increase the entitlements of a property without having to go through a land use plan amendment, which is a lengthy process.

a contract agreement to sell the property to Dome Equities, Inc. for $18.5 million, but the deal was not consummated. Atlantic 3350, LLC retained the property and is moving the new development forward.

The project’s resubmitted site plan was reviewed by the city’s Development Review Committee (DRC) this past June, and again last month. As a result, the developer must respond to requests from city staff for revisions or clarifications on the project and resubmit for another DRC review, according to the city’s Development Services Department.

Once the site plan application obtains the DRC’s approval, the project must receive approval from the Architectural Appearance Committee and the Planning and Zoning Board. A development order can then be issued, and the developer can submit for building permit approvals.Y

Marine Life Artwork By Dennis Friel is Planned for City Bridges The recently revamped Atlantic Boulevard Bridge features marineinspired murals done by local artist Dennis Friel. Now, there are plans for some neighborhood bridges in Pompano Beach to be adorned with Friel’s artwork.

A number of bridges are being replaced or improved with money from the city’s G.O. Bond, and the plan is for these bridges to include marine life graphics created by Friel.

The bridges that are being replaced or improved with G.O. Bond funding are the McNab Road Bridge, the SE Fifth Avenue Bridge, the Terra Mar Bridge, and two bridges in Palm Aire over the C-14 canal.

The SE Sixth Terrace Bridge in the Garden Isles neighborhood is being rebuilt with funding from the city’s capital improvements program, but is also targeted to have Friel’s marine life artwork.

The graphics for each bridge will be designed to meet localized field conditions. Still, the idea is for the artwork to be placed either at street level on both entrances of a bridge or on the railings, or possibly both, according to Horacio Danovich,

the city’s capital improvement and Innovation District director.

The artwork on the bridges will be enhanced with lighting.

The SE Fifth Avenue Bridge is expected to start construction first, possibly in January 2021.

Danovich said the goal is to eventually carry over the theme of marine-related artwork to the Hillsboro Inlet Bridge and the NE 14th Street Causeway Bridge, but funding for that would not be available for three or more years. Y

The Fisher Family Pier Is Getting a New Lightning Protection System A lightning protection system is being installed on the new Fisher Family Pier to protect the $11.5 million structure from damage.

Since the opening of the reconstructed pier in May, two incidents of lightning strikes have caused damage, according to Horacio Danovich, the city’s capital improvements and Innovation District director.

The first lightning strike hit one of the pier’s concrete pylons and traveled through to one of the lights, damaging a graphics panel. The lightning also traveled to the electric room and damaged the Ethernet, causing the surveillance cameras to stop working and a loss of Wi-Fi. The second lightning strike damaged another of the pier’s graphic panels.

The new lightning protection system consists of 10 air terminals (lightning rods) placed on the pier’s shade structures and six air terminals on the roof of the bait and tackle shop, along with grounding equipment. The air terminals dissipate lightning to less susceptible areas, such as the ground. Each of the eight lifeguard stands on the beach will also have an air terminal and a grounding plate.

The cost of the new lightning protection system is $30,200.

In addition to the shade structures, Wi-Fi and bait and tackle shop, amenities on the new higher and wider pier include benches, fishing stations, splinter-free railings, marine-related artwork, pedestrian lighting and an underwater camera. Y

Broward County Approves Funding for Pompano’s Dixie Highway and Riverside Drive Improvement Projects The city’s Dixie Highway improvements project, which is partially funded with money from the G.O. Bond, was recently approved by the Broward County Commission for $24.86 million of supplemental funding.

The funding will come from the 30-year, one penny increase in Broward County’s sales tax that voters approved in November 2018.

The money raised from the penny increase, or surtax, is specifically to fund transportation improvements.

A Riverside Drive improvements project was also approved by the Broward County Commission for surtax funding in the amount of $711,452 to be used for design costs.

The Dixie Highway project consists of upgrades to the corridor from McNab Road to Sample Road, including roadway crossing improvements, buffered bicycle lanes, new medians, wider sidewalks, new lighting, new landscape strips and islands, curb extensions, street furniture and onstreet parking.

The street furniture includes trash receptacles, bicycle racks, benches and possibly bus shelters.

Boulevard. The plan is to eliminate one travel lane in each direction and convert the travel lanes to on-street parking, according to Horacio Danovich, the city’s capital improvements and Innovation District director.

To improve pedestrian connectivity, the project may also include several pedestrian bridges over the Pompano Canal connecting parts of the Avondale neighborhood to Atlantic Boulevard.

The amount of G.O. Bond money set aside for the project is $21.96 million, said Danovich. The additional surtax funding approved by the county is divided into two amounts: approximately $2.96 million for design costs, and $21.88 million for construction.

The improvements to Dixie Highway will be done in three sections. The first section will be from McNab Road to just south of Atlantic Boulevard (SW 1st Street).

The second section will be from SW Firt Street to NE 10th Street, and the third section will be from NE 10th Street to Sample Road. The project’s scope also includes improvements on Atlantic Boulevard from NW Sixth Avenue to South Cypress Road.

Work on the first section could begin this November, said Danovich.

The first section is expected to take until the end of September 2021 to complete, and then work on the other areas would begin. The other sections are currently expected to be completed in mid-2024.

The scope of the Riverside Drive project is from Atlantic Boulevard to NE 14th Street Causeway. The plan is to realign the road to provide more

buffer space between the travel lanes and private parking or driveways. The project will also address the lack of sidewalks, particularly along the east side of the road. Landscaping and lighting will be enhanced, intersections will include features to encourage lower speeds, and if possible, onstreet parking will be added, said Danovich.

In addition, the project will attempt to address severe ponding conditions and implement technologies to help fight sea-level rise.

The Riverside Drive project is not on the city’s G.O. Bond project list. There is no timeline set for the construction of the project. It will depend on when funding is available.

Two other Pompano Beach projects were approved for surtax funding to be used for construction costs. Drainage improvements for Bay Drive on the barrier island were approved for $1,174,741, and drainage improvements in Kendall Lakes were approved for $3,741,868.

This summer, the Broward County Commission approved funding for 137 municipal-requested projects, including the Pompano Beach projects, for a total of $121 million.

It is the first cycle of municipal projects to be awarded funding from the surtax revenues. Over 700 municipal requests were submitted, totaling $3.3 billion.

The distribution of surtax revenues for county and municipal transportation-related projects will be ongoing for 30 years. The county is currently working on a five-year plan for the second cycle of funding, which will cover fiscal years 20212025. Y

Pompano Beach Isle Casino Redevelopment: A Major Change In Plans Due To Covid-19 The Live! Resorts Pompano development project – which will transform the Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park into an entertainment, hotel, dining, retail, residential and office hub – is being revised to add 1.5 million square feet of industrial use that is expected to bring over 1,200 new jobs to Pompano Beach. The revised plans, which are currently making their way through the City’s approval process, would reduce the project’s office component by 650,000 square feet in order to add the industrial use.

The proposed changes are a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Debbie Orshefsky, the attorney representing the developer, The Cordish Companies, which develops, owns and operates Live! entertainment destinations across the country.

Orshefsky told the Planning and Zoning Board at its Aug. 26 virtual meeting that because Live! Resorts Pompano was so linked to entertainment uses, the development team had to rethink the project.

The incorporation of the industrial use is to address “dramatic changes in the office and commercial recreation market.”

The developer has attracted a warehouse distribution and logistics firm that wants to establish an over one-million-square-foot facility on the project site, which is located on the southeast corner of Powerline Road and SW 3rd Street (Racetrack Road).

Orshefsky did not disclose the name of the firm, but said it would “generate approximately 1,200 jobs immediately, which is a shot in the arm in ways that are unimaginable in the current COVID situation that

She said the proposed industrial use, which wasn’t originally contemplated, will be a catalyst for the live-work-play uses that will also be part of the development.

The majority of the industrial use is expected be in the northeast corner of the project site, which is also slated for office space. The industrial use would have frontage on Racetrack Road, but could also extend southward to a portion of the site that was originally slotted for 400-foot-tall residential buildings.

There was concern expressed by some members of the Planning and Zoning Board that if the industrial use extends south, it could infringe upon the Cypress Bend residential community.

Orshefsky said there “would certainly be a sensitivity factor” in terms of adding more buffering and what the southern edge of a future industrial building would look like.

The industrial building would likely be 50 to 75 feet high.

Jean Dolan of the city’s Development Services Department said it would be more than a year before the distribution and logistics warehouse got under way, taking into account the various approvals that are needed.

In order to add the industrial use and decrease the office space, the developer is requesting a land use plan amendment that would modify the entitlements of the project site’s existing land use designation, which is “Regional Activity Center.”

The square footage trade-off was calculated based on the amount of traffic generation, said Dolan. With the added industrial use and the decreased office use, the number of trips are slightly less.

Dolan said there is 1.35 million square feet of office use remaining, and the developer could still attract a corporate headquarters, which is part of the vision of the project.

The amendment will then be reviewed by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) and other state agencies. It is expected to be brought back to the City Commission on Oct. 27. The land use plan amendment must also be approved at the County level.

It is the second land use change requested for the project site. Last September, the developer got final approval for a land use plan amendment that added another 2,800 multi-family residential units to the 1,300 multi-family residential units already permitted (for a total of 4,100 units), and increased the office space.

It reduced commercial recreation use, as well as commercial use, primarily retail space.

Concurrent with the second land use plan amendment, the developer submitted an application to rezone the project site to permit certain industrial park uses, including “warehouse, distribution or storage.”

The rezoning request would also significantly amend the site’s open space plan. The previously approved plan featured a crystal lagoon occupying 12 to 15 acres of the recreation area, and serving as a focal point for the development.

The lagoon, projected to cost about $1.5 million per acre, would have a special liner using a patented filtration system to keep the water clean and clear, like a big swimming pool, and would be used for activities such as swimming, kayaking and paddle boating.

acres, but introduces a minimum 12-acre natural lake adjacent to the lagoon. The lake would be a recreational amenity for boating, fishing and other water-based activities, and would also provide stormwater drainage necessary for the development.

The lake will be open to the general public, not just residents of the development, said Orshefsky.

The Planning and Zoning Board unanimously approved the rezoning request at its Aug. 26 meeting, and it is scheduled to go to the City Commission on Sept. 8 for first reading. The project site was rezoned in September 2019 as a Planned Commercial Development (PCD) district to encourage a mix of employment-generating uses, entertainment uses and residential units.

Concern was voiced by a member of the Planning and Zoning Board and a member of the public that there were no community outreach meetings regarding the proposed changes to the Isle Casino redevelopment plans. Orshefsky said it’s difficult to do community outreach under the COVID-19 circumstances, but committed to having more in-person outreach when the situation normalizes, and before a site plan comes out for the recreation area.

Orshefsky noted that it is not unusual for a large-scale project such as Live! Resorts Pompano, on the 232-gross acre Isle Casino site, to go through various evolutions.

Planning and Zoning Board Chair Fred Stacer, and others, expressed concern about truck traffic that would be coming in and out of the distribution center.

Orshefsky said there will be

major access points directly onto Racetrack Road for truck traffic, including one fully signalized intersection and one right-in rightout access.

Stacer said he was especially worried about the intersections at Powerline Road and Racetrack Road and Powerline Road and Atlantic Boulevard, which “are pretty busy even today,” and suggested that rather than using Powerline Road to get to the Turnpike or I-95, trucks should use Racetrack Road, and then head east to South Andrews Avenue.

The developer’s traffic consultant said a traffic analysis is being carried out, and will require approval from the Florida Department of Transportation.

The project may include a Tri-Rail station along the CSX Railroad, just east of the development site. The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) has approved a resolution supporting the potential Tri-Rail station.

Orshefsky said the high number of employees generated by the proposed industrial use, which will be adjacent to the railroad track, supports the idea of creating a TriRail station.

The station would cost $1620 million, but 75% of the cost is available through federal funding, said Orshefsky. The developer will be applying for that funding in cooperation with the SFRTA, the Metropolitan Planning Organization, the City and the County.

A full buildout of the Live! Resorts Pompano development project will include several phases and could take up to 10 years to complete. Y

Pompano Beach CRA Will Begin Public Outreach Efforts for Redesign of McNab Park As the McNab House and Botanical Gardens project moves into its second phase, which is designing a master plan for McNab Park, the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is getting ready to launch public outreach workshops so the community can provide their input on how the space will be used.

The CRA is planning to begin the workshops in November.

Last March, the CRA relocated the historic McNab House and garage from 1736 E. Atlantic Boulevard to McNab Park, at 2250 E. Atlantic Boulevard, with the vision of transforming the structures into a new restaurant facility and the adjacent park to the west and south into a public botanical garden.

“This is like a blank slate to do something really phenomenal for the city,” said Hollingworth.

In his presentation, Hollingworth showed the different components that typically make up a botanical garden, such as water features, lawns, walkways, seating and garden structures. He explained that botanical gardens can also include programming for educational activities, special events, music series, art exhibitions, nursery sales of plants from the garden, and a small retail shop offering unique items the public can buy when they visit the gardens.

Commissioner Andrea McGee said she’s “very excited about the options we have, and really making McNab Park special.”

“From what I’m seeing here, it’s even more beautiful than I had imagined,” said Commissioner Rhonda Eaton. “It will be like an oasis in the middle of a bustling community.”

Commissioner Tom McMahon said the project “will provide a muchneeded improvement” to the park and “will truly transform the quality of life for the residents” who live around the park.

The McNab House and Botanical Gardens project is a CRA project that will take place over 2-3 years. There is $2.7 million budgeted for the project.

BY DAWNE RICHARDS AWHILE BACK, WE TOOK OUR NOW-6-YEAR-OLD GRANDDAUGHTER TO THE "DERBY DAY" EVENT AT SAND AND SPURS EQUESTRIAN PARK. UNLIKE MANY youngsters, little Emma couldn’t get enough of the pony rides and screamed bloody murder when she had to dismount.

I thought she might be interested in horseback riding, so we checked out U Can Ride (ucanride.org).

While they describe themselves as focused on “The use of horses and equine-assisted activities to achieve goals to enhance physical, emotional, social, cognitive, behavioral and educational skills,” it’s far more than that.

Emma was instantly enchanted. What child — or adult — wouldn’t be? Horses! Open space! Barn cats!

Owls! Oh my! And a surprisingly open vista of much of the city's eastern side, the uber-cool blimp right next door, and the airport too.

If you haven’t been, I urge you to visit. It’s hard to believe that this pastoral acreage, part of the city’s park system, is pretty much right smack in the middle of the town.

Through his stunning work, photographer Kevin Bryant brings the fascinating underwater world to a broad audience.

Bryant earned the designation of Citizen Scientist from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, which has shared over 500 of Bryant’s aquatic life pictures. Kevin Bryant says he “...gets a kick out of cool nature stuff..” and considers himself a documentarian rather than an artist. Those who have enjoyed his photographs might differ with him; his colorful, aesthetically pleasing offerings are the work of someone who is both an artist and an educator. Bringing awareness to the plight of marine life in South Florida is essential to the healthy ecology and economy of the area.

Kevin Bryant shines a light on these challenges.

For nearly a decade, Bryant drove from his home in Savannah, Georgia to South Florida for long weekends full of diving. After retiring from dentistry, he moved to Florida, where he lives just 50 yards from the shore and access to diving.

Bryant is a member of the South Florida Underwater Photography Society (SFUPS), a nonprofit that works to raise awareness of conservation initiatives and to share the beauty of the underwater life.

The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) celebrates its 110th anniversary this year. Its first project took place in Panama in 1910 before the construction of the Panama Canal. The Smithsonian studied and cataloged flora and fauna of the lowland tropical forest that was about to be destroyed. That research was one of the first significant studies of environmental impact.

The STRI was created to obtain and disseminate information about tropical ecosystems and their impact on humansâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; wellbeing. Over 100 years later, the Smithsonian in Panama is the gold standard platform for researching the astonishing diversity of tropical forests and marine ecosystems.

Today, under the leadership of Acting Director Oris I. Sanjur, the STRI boasts a staff of 400, including 40 resident scientists. In addition, the institute offers fellowships, internships, and other opportunities to visiting scientists from research and academic programs around the world to travel to the institute in Panama and its scattered sites in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. These 1,400 visitors assist with some of the 300 plus ongoing projects

and peer-reviewed articles that appear in scientific journals yearly.

The STRI promotes the understanding and preservation of tropical nature and our interaction with it. They train students to conduct independent research. Through the STRI outreach program, hundreds of teachers and tens of thousands of students are educated and inspired to be part of the solution to preserve the environment.

John D. MacArthur Beach State Park Located on Jack Nicklaus Drive, this barrier island is a well-preserved piece of what Florida originally looked like before all our ancestors came and ruined it with centralized air conditioning and that whole modern civilization ruckus. Anyway, John D. MacArthur was a businessman and philanthropist who donated the barrier island to the state in the 1970s.

Since then, the park has become a staple refuge of the area, sporting beautiful trails, beaches and a lovely lagoon that you can paddle lazily through to enjoy the mangroves and wildlife. The boardwalk offers another stunning view of the two-mile lagoon and a sweeping view of the sunset. They usually provide kayak rentals and other amenities such as a gift shop, but they are currently unavailable due to Covid-19, but that doesn’t mean you can bring your own!

This state park, while boasting beautiful trails, scenery and waterways, also has a fascinating history. During the days of Jim Crow and segregation, property owners along the Fort Lauderdale beaches didn’t want African Americans on “their” beaches. So, Dr. Von D. Mizell, founder of the Broward chapter of the NAACP, petitioned for a beach that African Americans could spend their summer afternoons on. The city relented and promised to build an access road to make it easier to get to. The county dragged its feet for an entire decade before Eula Johnson, the president of the local NAACP chapter at the time, staged a wade-in on the all-white beaches.

Many of the parks’ facilities are named after people who also struggled for their rights when they were viewed as less-than.

There is a 1,650-foot boardwalk for your viewing pleasure, along with a pavilion to just vibe under. Typically, they rent canoes for you to paddle out into the marsh to get a closer look if that is your wish, but due to Covid-19, they have halted rentals until further notice. So, if you don’t mind using your feet a little, bring a camera to take some pictures of some of the indigenous wildlife.

Loxahatchee Slough

With nearly 13,000 acres of preserved land, this beautiful slice of nature is home to nine different Florida ecosystems. Located in North Palm Beach, this nature preserve has multiple mountain biking and equestrian paths to explore. If you happen to be a biker: beware, horses have the right of way here. If riding things isn’t your style, be sure to bring sturdy boots; it gets pretty muddy during the summer and fall. If walking or riding isn’t your preferred mode of transportation, they have a boat launch for kayaks, canoes, or paddleboards to soothe all your water-based needs. A fishing pier is also available for all you anglers who want a change of scenery.

An observation tower is also open to snap a few photographs of this natural paradise.

Tree Tops Park

This 23-acre park in Davie is a perfect for a day out or weekend nature hike. There is a path that leads to a treehouse observation deck with a spectacular view overlooking the marshes. All sorts of local wildlife inhabit the park, including alligators, but they’re pretty shy, so no need to worry. There are some duck boats to ride for a relaxing day as well. If you are in the mood to feel like a cowboy, they also have an excellent equestrian center for all your horse-related wants and needs. Or, if you just want to have a picnic under the sun, they have a lovely area to just relax.

West Lake Park

This massive, 1500-acre mangrove forest and waterway is perfect if you want to forget that you live in a sprawling urban environment. Whatever fun you wish to have under the hot Florida sun, it can probably be done here. There is a beautiful nature trail and courts for volleyball, basketball, tennis and racquetball. Or, if you’re in a more aquatic mood, you can rent a kayak, canoe or paddleboard and lazily drift through the mangroves. The nearly 50,000 feet of waterfront is really something every South Floridian should experience.

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park This state park was originally the estate of Hugh Taylor Birch, a lawyer and real estate investor from Chicago. When he was sailing down the coast in the 1890s, he came across the barrier island and made camp. Later he bought the barrier island, which some found to be insane since the locals knew what happened to barrier islands during hurricanes. He didn’t care; he built his retirement home there, which still stands today and is used as a museum and the visitor center. The park boasts multiple nature trails to escape from urban life, and they also rent out kayaks and paddleboards for a small fee.
