THE JOY OF LITTLE THINGS
Growing up in New York, my family often traveled to Florida to avoid the northern winters. My parents weren’t adventurous travelers but we still managed a few family vacations.
I remember a trip to Pennsylvania. One night, my sisters and I secretly ordered butterscotch sundaes from room service, which became the highlight of the trip. We still talk about those sundaes, and that memory never fails to brighten my day.
A few years ago, I read an article in The New York Times about a study on vacations. It revealed that people are generally happier while anticipating a vacation rather than after returning home, and those who vacationed were no happier than those who did not.
However, the article overlooked an important point: vacations, whether grand or modest, create unforgettable experiences that become cherished memories. It’s often the little moments, that bring joy.
The Florida vacations of my youth were all pretty similar. My parents played golf while my sisters and I hung out at the pool. We ate dinners at our favorite restaurants, saw a lot of movies, and spent quite a bit of time reading and relaxing. But my mother always made the best lunches while we were in Florida. She would fill the dining room table with all sorts of treats: imported cheeses, Genoa salami, roasted red peppers, marinated artichoke hearts, and a big loaf of crusty bread. While most people call that an antipasto, my family calls it “a Florida lunch.” And that makes us all pretty happy.
In this issue, you’ll find tips for planning your own family getaway to Sarasota—a destination perfect for creating family memories like these.

Imagine the Future
Yes, the South Florida Fair delivers traditional family fun, but it’s far from old-fashioned. In addition to an award-winning agriculture and livestock program, five stages of entertainment, exhilarating rides and daily parades, this year’s theme, Imagine the Future, features an exposition with 15 interactive exhibits that explore captivating concepts of science fiction that could potentially become a reality of tomorrow. During the course of the Fair – January 17 through February 2 – the interactive exhibit invites visitors to practice science literacy skills through hands-on activities.
Following the theme, there’s also a Sci-Fi on Ice show, a unique performance with talented ice skaters, elaborate costumes, next-gen lighting, immersive soundscapes, special effects and innovative set designs. The Palm Beach County Library System has also collaborated in the journey into the world of science fiction, by curating a suggested book list to transport readers to distant galaxies and beyond.
Other featured fun includes a variety of competitions including a culinary competition and rock tribute band competition, an Artist Alley, school performances, live entertainment and more.
The South Florida Fair is located at 9067 Southern Blvd., in West Palm Beach. Admission can be purchased at a discount, in-advance for $10/person.
Once the Fair opens on Jan. 17, tickets cost $15 for those 11 years and older Monday-Friday, and $20 on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free for children 10 and younger. Ride vouchers and wristbands are additional. For more information, call 561-793-0333 or visit www.southfloridafair.com.

Glades Christian Academy
Looking for a new school? GCA is where you belong. Glades Christian Academy is a kindergarten through 8th grade school. Our main core values are kindness and respect. We teach students to look to God’s Word for guidance.
Choosing a school is never easy. Here are a few questions to ask yourself to see if your child is receiving the best education and attention for their success:
Is my child a number or a name? Here at GCA, we learn everyone’s name and, in turn, are able to assist students and families better because we know them personally.
Is the current school keeping the parent informed? GCA uses a variety of tools to keep our parents informed. Parents have daily access to grades and interim reports, homework is clearly posted, parent meetings as requested, and a twenty-four-hour response to all phone calls and emails is provided.
Is your child’s school safe? GCA securely locks all doors so that there is only one entrance into the building. All teachers have been trained in the event of an intruder. Monthly drills help the students to practice fire drills or lockdown situations. GCA is a part of the Coral Springs Police Department private school notification system. In the event of an incident in the area, we are immediately notified to lockdown the school.
If you qualify for Family Empowerment Scholarship for Educational Options (FES-EO) or the Step Up for Students/Florida Tax Credit (enrollment@sufs.org) you may qualify for free tuition.
Call today for a tour of the school and further information.

ALL THAT GLITTERS
Winston and Nicole are just your normal parents of three kids. Except that he’s a Grammy-winning music producer—and she’s a former supermodel. They wanted a change of pace and a community that was a good fit for their family. Nicole was unaware of Ave Maria. “But when we pulled in, I was like, ‘oh wow,’” she laughs. “I called my mom and told her we were moving. I hadn’t expected to like small-town living, but we’re able to rest and relax here. We do bike rides, the water park, and all the festivals.” Winston nods and says, “Ave Maria’s a great place and constantly getting better.”
Glam and fam go hand-in-hand in Ave Maria— A Big Kind of Small Town.
AVE MARIA
A BIG KIND OF SMALL TOWN
Between Naples and Fort Lauderdale lies the balance you’ve been looking for. Nestled in the heart of Collier County, Ave Maria may be the biggest surprise of Southwest Florida. The slogan, “A Big Kind of Small Town” emphasizes Ave Maria having all the conveniences of a big town, but with small town connections. New homes from four premier builders start in the high $200s.
Whether it’s a family day at the water park, or a personal best on the morning run, it’s game on at Ave Maria. The fields, parks and recreation facilities, and golf clubs offer good times, good games, and heart-pumping activities for everyone.
Ave Maria was founded on the principles of education, family and community and it remains true today. Educational offerings within the community serve all age groups, from preschool through college and include Ave Maria University, the Rhodora J. Donahue Academy for grades K-12, and a preschool for ages 2-4 years old. A Collier County public elementary school is currently being constructed for the 2026-27 school year and will offer an A-rated quality education for 900 students.
Healthy living is another pillar of the Ave Maria familyfriendly culture. A certified Blue Zones community, Ave Maria residents themselves earned this prestigious designation given only to areas that provide healthy, community-focused lifestyle options to its residents.
A dedicated lifestyle staff, for example, organizes year-round activities. From swim lessons at the water park to festivals at North Park, residents find common ground to connect. South Park features softball fields, bocce ball courts, amphitheater, a dog park, and picnic pavilions. North Park offers soccer and baseball fields, basketball and tennis courts, a tot lot playground, disc golf, and concession stand. The Ave Maria Water Park includes an interactive aqua playground, two water slides, lap pool, water play area, beach volleyball, and CJ’s Water Park Café.
The community’s residents also find ways to gather at the centrally located Town Center, which features more than 60 businesses. All the conveniences of daily life are at the center of town and within walking distances for most residents, who enjoy a Publix grocery store, dining, retail shops, and healthcare services. This heart-of-the-community location is also home to a variety of free events held throughout the year, including Taste of Ave, Blues Brews & BBQ Festival, Margarita & Taco Festival, weekly Farmers Markets and more.
Another element of a healthy community is a focus on the environment. At Ave Maria, land conservation is a central tenet. More than 17,000 acres of nature preserves surround the community, which also offers more than 100 miles of walking, biking and hiking paths.
‘‘
Busy Having Fun
Sera is the oldest sibling in her family – leader of the pack and guide to all Ave Maria has to offer kids growing up. “There’s so much fun stuff to do,” she said. “So many places to go and friends to hang out with.” That often means loading up her brother and sisters, and an occasional neighbor kid or two, into the family golf cart for a day’s excursion. It might begin at the clubhouse pool or Ave Maria’s Water Park. Then a trip to the Town Center for a smoothie and a little shopping.
‘‘
Loving Little League
Kalel is living his best life. He joined Ave Maria Little League as a pitcher and first baseman. “I love that I get to play with all my friends, and we always have fun!” Kalel’s mom, Ariel agrees. “Our fields are beautiful, and the location of our parks are within walking distance for many Ave Maria residents, so our teams’ parents can efficiently plan practices and their dinner times, study hours and other family commitments. To have these parks in our town where anyone can walk or golf cart to is greatly beneficial.”
‘‘
Life with a Smile On
A few years ago, Jim’s brother brought him to Ave Maria to play golf at Panther Run Golf Club. “I was looking for a small town,” he said, “and the people are awesome.” In his spare time he’s a runner. “I’m known as the jogger with a smile on my face,” he said.
“A neighbor asked me why I was smiling all the time. I said, because we live in paradise.”
The Hernandez Family
Ariel and Juan Hernandez were seeking a fresh start for their family.
Having lived in Broward County –Juan in law enforcement and Ariel managing a thriving therapy practice – their lives were full and fulfilling. However, the congestion of city living had begun to wear on them, and they longed for a neighborhood with a more connected, community-oriented feel.
Juan began researching the best places to raise a family, and one of the first names that appeared on his list was Ave Maria, an awardwinning master-planned community located halfway between Broward County and Naples, with convenient access to Alligator Alley. Juan dug deeper into his research and became convinced Ave Maria was the right place for them.
“I was skeptical because I never heard of this place,” Ariel said. After some persuasion, she agreed to visit with her husband to tour the community, visit model homes and get a sense of what living there would be like. “I saw the homes and instantly fell in love with them,” she shared. “We drove through the neighborhood, and everyone was so friendly. We saw kids riding their bikes – something we hadn’t seen in forever.”
After that initial visit they decided to call Ave Maria home. Ariel’s family wasn’t so sure about the change. Her parents, Donna and Luis, were convinced the Hernandez family would be back within a year. However, after visiting they found Ave Maria was more than they had expected. “Donna and I were sad when they moved,” Luis shared, “but when we visited, we loved it so much, we decided to move here too.”
Soon Ariel’s sister-in-law, her niece then her sister followed suit as well. Now the entire Hernandez-Perez clan has established deep roots in the community. “We go to the parks, the pools, baseball and soccer games… And we all gather for big family meals,” Luis said. “It is so important for us to have these moments with our grandchildren. We get to do life together, and I couldn’t be happier.”
Now the Hernandez’s and their extended family are thriving in Ave Maria – A Big Kind of Small Town.

A Letter to Cousins
ONE FAMILY'S PATH TO FINDING COMMON GROUND
BY SUSAN ROSSER
The following is a letter I sent to my children and their cousins. Like so many families, the group has become divided over the past few years by differing viewpoints and opinions. I sent this letter to them in the hopes that, eventually, they would be able to reconcile.
To the cousins,
When your Uncle Richard first started in the publishing business, I decided to step back from sharing anything political online. The man who sold us our first magazine advised staying out of politics, which was good advice. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t sometimes tempted to post my views, but I always hold back. Over time, I’ve found that this approach has given me peace.
I understand there are significant differences in beliefs within this group, and it is hard not to feel the weight of that. When individuals feel hurt by the ideas and beliefs of others, it is difficult or even impossible to maintain connections across political lines. For some of you, rebuilding a relationship may seem incomprehensible. However, I still hold onto the hope that this won’t be the case forever.
One thing that could help, a super-tiny first step, is if everyone avoided sharing political opinions on social media. If you feel like hashing these things out, I encourage you to have those conversations in person or over the phone. (I wouldn’t use text or email — that can go downhill fast.)
I know there are deep wounds, and some relationships have grown strained or even disappeared.
But here’s what I know in my heart: we are bound together by connections so strong they defy words. When I look at each of you, I see my mother’s unusual brand of humor and my parents’ love of laughter, family and home. That’s a gift we all share. It’s part of your grandparents’ legacy, something I wish you could keep sharing with one another.
I know that my relationship with my sister Debbie became strained leading up to the 2020 election. We never stopped speaking entirely, but I can’t deny that things were not great between us. Then, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and my big sister began calling me constantly. She loved me, and I loved her beyond measure. I might be one of the few women who can say they are grateful for a breast cancer diagnosis because it brought us back together in the nick of time. Tomorrow is not guaranteed.*
I realize this small suggestion won’t magically bridge the divide. And yes, it might seem pointless since not sharing an opinion doesn’t mean that opinion has changed. But maybe it could be a start — a small way to open a space for healing, however long that might take. Plus, it’s a lot cheaper than therapy.
With all my love for each and every single one of you, Auntie Susan, or Mom if that’s appropriate
*The author’s sister Debbie unexpectedly passed away in January of 2020.
