Deacon, who has Barth syndrome, and his family

Moments that Count

Deacon was just 3 months old when a trip to the ER revealed the little guy was in heart failure. Maryanne Chrisant, MD, Medical Director, Pediatric Cardiac Transplant, Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathy, quickly determined he had Barth syndrome. Fortunately, Dr. Chrisant and our cardiology team have experience with the extremely rare condition. Deacon and his family have been able to move forward with a detailed care plan. “One year I counted there were more than 170 visits of some sort,” says mom Brandi. “In all of those moments, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital was there for our family.” Where you go matters. In the moments that count most, trust our heart care experts.

Jared’s mom and dad, Robin and Kim, talk about being in the Town Center and having a couple come up and introduce themselves.“ Jared told us we should meet you,” they said. Jared doesn’t talk, but his warmth and friendliness transcends words. ©2024 Ave Maria

UNDER THE BIG TOP CIRQUE DELIVERS HIGH-FLYING FUN

C

irque du Soleil returns to South Florida with “ECHO” – a powerful and awe-inspiring performance that explores the delicate balance between humans, animals and the world we share. The concept of the performance stems from how we experience an echo through humanity and the way our actions have a resounding impact on the surrounding world. This idea is brought to life by how artists and characters interact with the CUBE. Filled with amazing acrobatic feats, stunning visuals and inspiring music, the excitement unfolds from February 22 through April 7 under the Big Top at Gulfstream Park. ECHO, a show for all ages, tells a story of the symbiotic connections between humans and the animal kingdom through a unique and breathtaking performance. The storyline of Cirque’s 20th Big Top show follows an inquisitive young woman named FUTURE as she wanders into a fantasy world that explores the bond between animals and nature. When FUTURE and her best friend the DOG encounter a mysterious CUBE, they quickly learn how their actions have the power to shape this world. As the massive structure is extracted and rebuilt, we come to understand that empathy and compassion can restore our relationship with animals and the natural world, and ultimately lead us to a space of hope, love and connection. Packed with vibrant characters, inspiring music, contemporary abstract costumes, astounding lighting and projections, and never-before-seen acrobatics, ECHO brings audiences on a journey through a universe of color, wonder and infinite possibilities. Gulfstream Park is located at 901 S. Federal Highway in Hallandale Beach. For more information, or to purchase tickets, visit www.cirquedusoleil.com/echo.

Tempt Your Tastebuds

Sure, the South Beach Wine and Food Festival might sound like it’s specifically geared toward grown-ups, but there’s plenty of foodie fun for all ages during this four-day festival. The star-studded event takes place February 22-25 and includes an extensive lineup of events with the likes of renowned chefs and celebrities including Rachael Ray and Guy Fieri, among many others. Experiences range from food and wine tastings to master cooking classes to complete dinners prepared by extraordinary chefs. For the family, Golden Globe award-winning actress and best-selling author Valerie Bertinelli will host a Family Ice Cream Social at Loews Miami Beach Hotel on Sunday, February 25. The cost is $60 for each adult and $40 per child and includes samplings of inventive ice cream flavors and toppings that range from sweet to savory. The social takes place on the hotel lawn, so there will be plenty of space for the kids to run, play and work off some of that sugar-fueled energy. Earlier that day, Salt & Straw will provide an ice cream-making master class where attendees can learn how the shop concocts inventive flavors such as chocolate champurrado with sesame toffee, blackberry tamales and freckled mint chocolate chip. Tickets start at $115. If you opt to get a babysitter and make a date night, day, or weekend out of it, there’s a range of culinary options to choose from for the 21+ crowd. There’s the Burger Bash with Rachael Ray, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives Live with Guy Fieri, Goya Foods’ Grand Tasting Village on the beach, and Wine Spectator’s Best of the Best, a walk-around tasting festival where 60 of the nation’s acclaimed chefs are paired with more than 65 top-rate wineries from around the world. The South Beach Wine and Food Festival takes place at a variety of locations. For tickets, or more information, visit www.sobewff.org.

College

It’s not too soon – start planning now

BY JEANNE PELLEGRINO

H

igh school flies by for both students and parents. Freshman year is all about becoming acclimated and mastering the routine of high school. Then suddenly, sophomore year arrives, and your child is in the groove, doing well, getting involved, and hopefully, maturing. In the spring of their sophomore year, it's time to get serious about college. This is the time when guidance departments start the scheduling process for the following school year. Your sophomore will be choosing classes for their junior year, and just like when we were kids, it is the most critical year before the college application season. So, what classes should your child choose? Hopefully, they have a great work ethic and are happy to take the most challenging classes available to them. However, that's not everyone. Students who have been earning good grades in standard-level classes can be reluctant to take on Advanced Placement (AP) or Dual Enrollment (DE) courses. Junior year is when students of all abilities should challenge themselves. If they have never taken an AP course, they should take at least one – or more if possible. Four-year universities like to see that students will work to overcome perceived obstacles. Even if they get a lower grade or don’t pass the AP test, colleges want to see the effort. Dual enrollment is also an option. Most high schools have a partnership with one or more local colleges, and students can take a required course or elective either at the high school site or on one of the college campuses. Volunteer, extracurricular, and work opportunities also become significant factors during junior year. Your student should get involved. I'm not saying they should work 40 hours a week, but they should choose one or two areas they think they might be interested in and try to gain experience in that area. Do they think they want to go into medicine? They can volunteer at a hospital or doctor's office. If they are thinking about engineering, they could join the robotics or math club at school. It's not just about joining the club or organization but about making a mark and building skills. Encourage them to organize a project or start a club themselves. The summer between 10th and 11th grade is a good time for students to have a longer-term sustained experience. Maybe they can work at a camp, volunteer or even get their first job. Colleges will look for that additional experience beyond academics. As important as the planning is, students should still have fun with friends and family, relax, go to the pool or the beach and simply take time to be kids. If the planning is in place, the college application season in the fall of senior year will be a much smoother experience.

y p p a H CREATIVE wAys tO ShOW YOUR cHild LOVE BY KIMBERLY BLAKER

alentine’s Day is a perfect reason to show your child just how much he or she is loved. Try these creative ideas to show how much you care on Valentine’s Day and throughout the entire year.

Edible Ideas

A HEART A DAY. Add a heart-shaped candy to your child’s lunch box every day of the school year. Be sure to stock up during after-Valentine’s Day clearance sales, so you don’t run out. DO LUNCH. Pick up your child from school for a surprise lunch date. Stop at your child’s favorite fast-food restaurant, go on a picnic or have lunch together in the school cafeteria. (If you choose the latter, make sure your child won’t mind or be embarrassed.)

The Written Word

A POET AND DIDN’T KNOW IT. You don’t have to be a poet to write a poem to your child. If poetry isn’t your thing, look up simple children’s rhymes. Then make revisions, specific for your child. Poems can be serious or fun, but either way, your child will love them. SNAIL MAIL SURPRISE. Kids love to get mail, so why not send your child a card, letter or postcard? Don’t forget to let your child check the mail to discover the greeting. SCRABBLE GREETINGS. Wish your child a “Happy Valentine’s Day,”

s t r a e H congratulate him on a great report card, or show how much you appreciate your child’s help with a Scrabble message. For younger readers, spell out a simple phrase leaving a space between words. For older kids, make them figure out your greeting. Intersect the words as you would in playing Scrabble and see if they can solve the message. C IS FOR … Make a poster portraying your child’s characteristics. Put your child’s name at the top. Then list as many positive descriptive words as you can that begin with your child’s initial. Use a thesaurus to find oodles of words. (Example: Cassandra, cute, caring, creative, crafty, curious.)

Do It Together

A GIFT OF TIME. For today’s busy parents, finding time to read to or play with your child isn’t always easy. Fortunately, quality, rather than quantity, is what matters most. Show your child you care by setting aside a few minutes each day to talk, read or play together. You’ll both reap the rewards. A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE. Flip through photo albums or watch family videos together, and reminisce about favorite holidays, vacations and family times you’ve had together. EVENTFUL GIFTS. Buy tickets to a concert, ice show or sporting event your kids have been dying to see. But keep it a surprise. On the day of the event, say you’re all going out for dinner. Then catch your kids by surprise when you arrive at your destination. MAKE A DATE. Plan a regular date with your child for one-on-one time. This works well for families with more than one child. Each parent should take a turn with each child. You can go out for lunch, play putt-putt, take in a movie, or spend an afternoon at the park.

Gifts From The Heart

ENGRAVE YOUR THOUGHTS. Have a necklace or bracelet engraved for your child. Be sure to include their name, your sentiments, and who it’s from. VAN GOGH IN THE MAKING. Sift through your child’s art collection and select a piece to display. Then matte, frame and hang it in a room, other than your child’s, for everyone to see. IT’S IN THE WRAPPING. Don’t wait for a special occasion to give your child a gift. Kids love presents, so the next time you pick up something for your child, wrap it as a surprise.

The Perfect Valentine BY SUSAN ROSSER

Why not transform chocolate covered strawberries into the perfect valentine cookie? These chocolatey thumbprint cookies make for an excellent baking venture, especially with the kids’ involvement. Plenty of tasks are suited for little hands, from rolling the dough to creating the thumbprints.

CHOCOLATE-COVERED STRAWBERRY THUMBPRINTS Yield: About 40 cookies

Ingredients: FOR THE COOKIES 3/4 cup/102 grams all-purpose flour 3/4 teaspoon Kosher salt 5 tablespoons/71 grams unsalted butter, cut into pieces 8 ounces/226 grams semisweet or bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped (about 1-1/3 cups) 2/3 cup/132 grams granulated sugar 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder (optional) 2 cold large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Sanding or granulated sugar, for coating (about 1/3 cup) FOR THE FILLING 4 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped 1 cup good quality strawberry or raspberry preserves (such as Bonne Maman)

Preparation: • Whisk flour and salt in a small bowl. • Melt chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl set over simmering water; remove, whisk in sugar, espresso powder, and eggs one at a time. • Stir in vanilla. Using a spatula, add flour in three additions. Cover the dough with plastic wrap ensuring the plastic is in contact with the dough. • Refrigerate for 2 hours to 4 days. • Preheat oven to 350°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper. Scoop the dough into tablespoon size balls, roll into balls with your hands and then coat balls in sugar. Place on baking sheets make indentations with the end of a wooden spoon. Bake for 10-12 minutes, rotating sheets midway. Place the sheet pans on cooling racks and allow to cool completely. • Spoon jam into each cookie’s center. Melt chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over simmering water and spoon over jam. The Ultimate Guide to The

FLORIDA RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL RETURNS TO

Quiet Waters Park Deerfield Beach

Saturday, February 3rd through Sunday, March 24th

a Bygone Era

The clock is ticking, and every second brings you closer to a bygone era filled with Lords of the Realm adorned in tunics, stockings, broad-brimmed hats, and puffed-sleeve shirts. The Ladies will also showcase the bygone era's fashion with laced gowns, strapped dresses, petticoats, cloaks, and aprons. Get ready for the 32nd annual Florida Renaissance Festival, returning Saturday, Feb. 3 and running through Sunday, Mar. 24, 2024 at the picturesque Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach. This one-of-a-kind festival features eight consecutive themed weekends. Each weekend promises a captivating inside look at a legendary time when pirates, Vikings, evil villains, and unsung heroes ruled the kingdom. While costumes are not required for admittance, thousands of people wear historical clothing to immerse themselves in the true spirit of the Renaissance period. The Florida Renaissance Festival is produced by nationally acclaimed Bobby Rodriguez Productions, who creates an entertaining and cultural experience for adults and children alike. “For more than 30 years the Festival has been a unique event,” said Rodriguez. “It is one of the most anticipated events in South Florida, and each year it gets better with new and different activities and entertainment.” Explore artisan markets, savor delicious food, and immerse yourself in a world of merriment. New this season is the Adrian Empire, a living history encampment that will be doing live steel fighting on the tournament field twice daily. They will also host for one week only, a large gathering of warriors from across the country for a convention and battle. Also new is Pirates Creed, a high energy duo of musical buccaneers that will be performing in the Biergarten. A popular returning attraction is Knights, presented by DeBracey Productions. This live action stunt show combines trick riding, vaulting, chariot racing, and death-defying stunts as the warrior princess searches for her knight in shining armor. The masses decide the fate of the princess in this winner-take-all scenario. The Jackdaws Trio will appear in the Biergarten, delivering contemporary and traditional Irish Rock with driving melodies

and relentlessly aggressive lyrics, while the alluring full run Washing Well Wenches will be at the Washing Well Stage — a pit where women rule, and men drool over their stunning good looks! Enjoy the earthier aspects of humor with the Splattertime Players, a duo of adventurous storytellers who return for a full run in the Mud Pit. While wallowing in the pit they will add a new dimension to filthy humor and “groundbreaking” entertainment. Masala Music and Dance appears full run on the Checkmate Stage. Crowds will be captivated by world-class musicians, as their mesmerizing drum rhythms and enchanting melodies echo throughout the kingdom. Witness fantastic Flamenco footwork, swift canes, and dangerous swords of the most beloved dances from the mysterious east to the passionate west. Moonie the Magnificent, a juggler, ropewalker, and an in-your-face comic will appear full run on the Tudor Stage, performing a one-of-a-kind audience interaction show. Not for the easily intimidated, he dresses like a clown but acts like the devil! Les S. Moore specializes in “now you see it, now you don’t” and appears full run on the Crown Stage, where pickpocketing is his specialty. What you think is in your pocket will end up in his! Knightwings featuring master falconer Ash Cary is in full flight with an incredible exotic bird show, featuring hawks, falcons, owls, eagles, and vultures in three amazing performances in the Jousting Arena. Tam Tam Congo is a new troupe of dancers and drummers, straight from the Ivory Coast of AFRICA. They will dazzle you with African dances, like the Zaouli. Appearing on the Good Knight Pub Stage, Jacques ze Whipper, is a secondgeneration circus performer who specializes at performing at renaissance fairs. This light-hearted entertainer is charm personified with performances filled with a wit and a whip! This year’s Living History Encampments: The Ottoman Empire include Royal Artillery, Merchants of Brittany, and Pirates of Tortuga Bay.

WORDS of wisdom

The Wild Pink Yonder THERE IS AN EXPLORER IN ALL OF US BY SUSAN ROSSER

A

s a kid, I spent hours studying an illustrated map of Long Island that hung in our den. My favorite puzzle back then was a map of the United States. You could say I’ve always had a thing for maps, which brings me to a very early memory. It was a beautiful spring day — the sort of day where the air seemed to sparkle. My parents decided we should take a ride. Typically, this meant we didn’t have a set destination. We would pile in the car and go. Sometimes, we would travel just 15 minutes to have lunch in the neighboring town of Cold Spring Harbor. Other times, we would venture upstate and pick apples. But on this day, my parents decided we would set course to Connecticut. My father busted out his map of New England, planned our route and folded the map back up perfectly. I was beyond excited for this trip as we would be crossing state lines. As I sat in the back seat and watched the scenery move by, I nearly exploded with anticipation. Connecticut was not far. Finally, I couldn’t wait even one more second. I blurted out, “Tell me when we get to Connecticut.” My mother replied, “We’re already in Connecticut.” Her answer devastated me. How had I missed the crossing? She must be mistaken. Nothing was pink. On my father’s map of New England, New York (where we lived) was green, and Connecticut was pink. Logically, I thought once we crossed into Connecticut, all the leaves would be pink. I thought the lawns would be pink.

I thought the bushes would be shades of magenta, and surely the stately trees lining the highway would beam with magnificent fuchsia foliage. I explained my theory to my family, and naturally, everyone thought I was being remarkably adorable. I felt nothing but disappointed. But it was OK. I don’t remember what we did in Connecticut that day. But knowing my parents, we probably stopped somewhere and had a delicious lunch of fried clams in some hideaway on the Long Island Sound. We probably went antiquing in a 17th-century colonial home. And most likely, we stopped for ice cream. Reflecting on that spring day adventure to Connecticut, I came to a valuable insight for parents — the profound impact of exploring with your children. Exploration is an opportunity to share the excitement of the unknown — opening a window into your children’s minds. As a kid, I envisioned Connecticut as a land of pink, and while reality didn’t align with my colorful expectations, the joy was in the shared imagination. In a world dominated by digital navigation, there’s a certain magic to unfolding a paper map. So head for the unknown — even if it’s just a short drive away. You might not find pink landscapes, but you’ll discover the colors of your children’s imaginations, and that, in itself, is an adventure worth embracing. Susan Rosser is the editor of South Florida Family Life and has been craving fried clams ever since she wrote this.
