It takes a place like Ave Maria to keep up with a friendship ambassador like Jared. He’s always on the go, taking pictures and making new friends. Jared’s mom and dad, Robin and Kim, talk about being in the Town Center and having a couple come up and introduce themselves. “Jared told us we should meet you,” they said. Jared doesn’t talk, but his warmth and friendliness transcends words. So, when he types a thought out on his pad, you listen. And your life is better for it.
Friends and family are the best part of the story at Ave Maria, A Big Kind of Small Town.

Expecting the Unexpected
“But there’s no doctor,” I screamed on a continuous loop.
I had been scheduled to be induced into labor on September 13. However, fate had other plans. At around 1:30am on that very morning, I awoke feeling anything but normal. I called my OBGYN, who sent me to the hospital and assured me he would meet me there.
Flash forward about 25 minutes, and I was screaming about the lack of a doctor. He finally arrived, but my daughter beat him to it. He was stunned.
The next day, as I cradled my new baby girl, my doctor admitted he hadn’t thought I was in labor when he sent me to the hospital. Yet, knowing my induction was imminent, he erred on the side of caution. He conceded it was the first time he had misjudged over the phone if a pregnant mother was indeed in labor. He said he can usually tell by the tone of a patient’s voice and that I didn’t sound like a woman in labor.
I experienced what medical professionals term precipitous labor – which is the way to go. Take it from someone whose first delivery was a marathon.
With no doctor in the delivery room, my daughter was delivered by an outstanding nurse. Amidst the chaos (remember the continuous loop of screaming), her calm demeanor was contagious. She simultaneously soothed my fears and delivered a baby –a remarkable feat.
Being pregnant is like starring in a science fiction movie without the fiction part. It’s a surreal journey, fraught with challenges. It takes a village of professionals and the unwavering dedication of parentsto-be to bring forth life. In this issue, we offer a plethora of maternity information for all embarking on this extraordinary journey.

LEADING THE WAY
A group of 14 high school students from Fort Lauderdale High School’s Law Magnet program, recently received a real-life lesson in law during a behind-the-scenes tour of the Conrad & Scherer offices and the Federal Courthouse.
The students are participants of the 2024 Conrad & Scherer Pathways to Careers in Law program, a collaboration between Conrad & Scherer, Nova Southeastern University's Shepard Broad College of Law (NSU Law), and Fort Lauderdale High School's Law Magnet program. The program is designed to provide real-world experiences, mentorships and support to high school students in underserved categories who are interested in careers in law.
According to a press release, William R. Scherer, a Conrad & Scherer Founding Partner and practicing trial lawyer for 50 years told the students, “Diligence is even better than intelligence… We will give you a lift up, as that’s what I got.” The firm also gave each Fellow a copy of The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, an example of an “individual coming from nothing to greatness.”
The Fellows also heard from retired Judge and Conrad & Scherer Partner Elizabeth Scherer, Associate Attorney Alexa Gebert, and Partner Janine McGuire, who manages the Pathways program.
After a tour of the firm’s offices, the students traveled to the Federal Courthouse, where they had a private meeting with the Honorable Raag Singhal, U.S. Federal District Court Judge for the Southern District of Florida.
The firm also offers a four-year scholarship each year to one student who wants to pursue a bachelor's degree in legal studies at NSU.

Fiesta Fusion
Mexican street corn dip is indeed a delicious twist on a classic street food favorite! The combination of cream cheese, tangy sour cream, savory cotija cheese, and spicy chili perfectly captures the flavors of Mexican street corn. Plus, transforming it into a dip makes it easy to enjoy with chips or even as a topping for tacos. Serving this dip as an appetizer elevates any meal into a festive occasion — perfect for Cinco de Mayo.
Recipe and Photo by Susan RosserStreet Corn Dip
Ingredients:
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 yellow onion, chopped
2 cups fresh corn kernels (about 2-3 ears)
2-3 cloves garlic, chopped
Salt and black pepper to taste
6 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
1/3 cup sour cream
3/4 cup crumbled cotija cheese
Kernels from 1 ear of grilled or broiled corn
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
Tajin seasoning to taste (optional)
Tortilla chips for serving
Preparation:
1. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until soft, about five minutes.
2. Add the fresh corn kernels, chopped garlic, chili powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, and season with salt and black pepper. Sauté for about five minutes until the corn is cooked.
3. Reduce the heat to low. Add the cream cheese to the skillet and stir until melted and well combined with the corn mixture. Then, stir in the sour cream until warmed through.
4. Once the dip is heated through and creamy, stir in the fresh lime juice. Adjust seasoning if necessary.
5. Spoon the dip into a wide serving bowl. Sprinkle with the cotija cheese, grilled or broiled corn kernels, chopped cilantro, and Tajin seasoning if desired.
6. Serve warm with tortilla chips and enjoy!

Bridging the Distance
FACETIME CHATS WITH MY COLLEGE-AGE KID
BY CHERYL MAGUIREMother-daughter relationships are complicated, and mine is no exception.
Given our complex eighteen-year history, I assumed that when she embarked on her new life as a college freshman that she would flee from me like a gazelle narrowly escaping the jaws of a crocodile. I also accepted that our conversations — which have become increasingly disjointed in her teen years — would cease until Thanksgiving.
I was wrong.
Without fail, at 8 p.m., she FaceTimes me, and not only talks for over an hour but also asks questions that she’d never asked before like, “What did you do today, Mom?”
The first time she posed that question I was positive I had misheard her. I wondered, “Did she actually just ask me a question?” Typically, I was the one, as she so eloquently phrased it, “interrogating her” or barraging her with aggravating inquiries like, “How was your day at school?”
“I no longer prefer to be anywhere near your orbit.” This distance, I’ll admit, led me to overcompensate by conducting inquisitions whenever she was within ten feet of me. I had low expectations that she’d stay in touch once she went to a school more than 200 miles away.
At first, I chalked her daily FaceTime calls up to homesickness. But after the initial separation period passed, and she continued to call, my assessment of her behavior shifted. She willingly offered information like the meal she consumed for dinner, the drama among dormmates and the assignments she struggled with — all without any coercion. My astute deduction was: We were having an actual conversation!
In much the same way the earth’s orbit around the sun changes over time, so does the mother-daughter relationship.
Instead of responding, my mind ran through all the ways I might have misunderstood. Perhaps she had asked: “What did you say?” or “What is today?” or the least plausible, “What is hearsay?”
The toddler years proved to be more harmonious. She preferred to be within my orbit, waddling behind me like a baby duckling. Her infectious giggles could brighten even the most despondent demeanor. And dare I admit that her strong-willed nature was endearing?
The preschool years were even better. Mundane tasks like grocery shopping were transformed into a celebratory event with my daughter beside me in her blue Cinderella princess gown and bedazzled tiara.
In hindsight, my college degree in developmental psychology should have prepared me for the teenage years. Instead, I was exasperated. Overnight it seemed as if my communicative cub turned into a surly one-worded bear who only knew the word “no.”
Besides the lack of communication, there was the continuously closed door to her room that signaled,
After being away for three months, she returned home for Thanksgiving, and our magical conversations disappeared into whatever vortex they had materialized from. The one-word sentences re-emerged along with the closed doors. When my husband noticed my melancholy mood he proposed a simple solution, albeit one that seemed absurd.
“Why don’t you FaceTime her?” he suggested.
Reluctantly, I depressed the FaceTime icon on my phone and waited in the living room for her to answer from one floor above me.
“Why are you calling me?” she asked with a hint of irritation.
“It’s time for our daily call,” I replied in a matter-of-fact tone.
She played along with her mother’s outlandish ruse, talking for her usual 60 minutes. The mere illusion of being 200 miles away seemed to revive her ability to have a conversation with me. Hopefully one day we can transition to IRL.
Cheryl Maguire, the mother of twins and a daughter, continues to be fond of frequent FaceTime calls.
