Moving from Broward to Ave Maria puzzled Ariel and Juan’s family and friends. “We’ll give it a year,” they were told. “I wasn’t sure, either,” says Ariel. But a focus on finding a better place to raise a family led them here. “Both kids have so many friends. My son loves playing baseball, and he and I are taking drumming lessons,” says Ariel. As for the skeptics? “Her parents are moving a couple of blocks from here,” laughs Juan.
Following your own drum has its benefits. Especially when you follow it to Ave Maria, A Big Kind of Small Town.

In Search Of...
Years ago, when my daughter was in fifth grade, she had a class project that required students to plan an itinerary for an out-of-town guest. The kids had to work in pairs, and my daughter teamed up with a friend.
We decided to try a place that had recently won a local burger contest. I can’t remember the exact organization that hosted the contest, or even which place won, but I thought it would be fun to treat the kids to a highly acclaimed burger. However, the winning spot turned out to be more of a bar than a typical burger joint. I didn’t know the other girl’s parents well and felt very uncomfortable bringing two 11-year-olds into a dark, somewhat edgy bar with a bit of a foreboding vibe. It was the kind of place where you walked in and thought to yourself if these walls could talk. It certainly was not an ideal spot for two innocent tweens. Fortunately, they had outdoor seating, so we stayed there.
As I recall, the burgers were fantastic, and the girls included the burger in their presentation. I was half-praying that the teacher wouldn’t recognize the name of the joint; the last thing I needed was a snarky raised eyebrow. Thankfully, everything went smoothly.
We are fortunate to live in South Florida, where we have so many options at our fingertips, from mouthwatering pizza and burgers to top-notch hospitals, doctors, beautiful beaches and more. Each year, we ask you to vote for your favorites and we are proud to present this year’s winners. Trust me, there are no gritty bars on the list.

MOM AND DAUGHTER SET SAIL ON A COLLEGEMOON
BY CHERYL MAGUIRE
Before my daughter went to college, we took a “collegemoon.” You’re probably thinking, “Never heard of it.” As far as I know, I coined the term. It’s sort of like a babymoon, but instead of going on a vacation before having a baby, I went on the Norwegian Cruise Line’s (NCL) Prima ship with my 17-year-old daughter.
I admit, this wasn’t planned. But the opportunity of this mother-daughter adventure to five European countries couldn’t be passed up. To make things even sweeter, Katy Perry was scheduled to perform a concert on the ship.
When I mentioned the voyage to my daughter, she immediately said she wanted to go. She never willingly wants to spend time with me, so I was in uncharted territory (pun intended).
Now, I realize that not everyone can go on an eight-night cruise with their teen, but a collegemoon could just be a weekend camping. The idea is that you are spending quality time traveling somewhere fun together for a few days. Here are some things that I learned on our trip:
1. GAINING A NEW PERSPECTIVE. For every country we visited, my daughter suggested going to a convenience store to sample foreign candy, food and drinks. I don’t even like to go into convenience stores in the U.S., so I thought this sounded ridiculous. Plus, I didn’t know if I would ever get the chance to visit Europe again, and did I really want to spend the limited time I had walking up and down the aisles of a glorified grocery store? Turns out, besides seeing Katy Perry, this was really the only thing she talked about wanting to do. So, I finally agreed. It ended up being a fun way to interact with local people and to try new types of candy, food and drinks. Who knew?
2. OVERSCHEDULING ISN'T WORTH IT . If you do end up taking your own collegemoon, I highly recommend having some down time and not overscheduling. It can be easy to do since you only have a limited time with your teen, but trust me, it’s not worth it. I tried to fit so much in since we were in Europe, but she ended up grumpy towards the end of the trip –understandable given the amount of walking we did, and the lack of sleep. She did recover, but I wish I had avoided it.
3. TRAVELING TOGETHER IS BONDING. I think the best part of our collegemoon was spending time together, just the two of us. When we first stepped on the ship, I can still remember looking at each other and feeling a shared excitement. That feeling continued throughout the whole trip. Anytime we tried something new like going down a water slide, eating foreign candy or singing together at the Katy Perry concert – we bonded. And after we returned, we joked about our experiences and talked more than we have in years. We created lasting memories and while she is away from the nest and I’m feeling sad, I’ll look at the picture of her holding an Irish candy and I’ll be smiling within seconds.
Cheryl Maguire, the mother of twins and a daughter, is happy to have had the opportunity of a collegemoon.
