Expertise for Children’s Surgery
Grace was born with a rare condition that meant her stomach was about the size of an adult pinky and she had difficulty eating.
Jill Whitehouse, MD, Vice-Chief, Pediatric General Surgery, explained to Grace’s worried parents that their precious little girl needed major abdominal surgery as soon as possible. “It was a very emotional moment, but we trusted her,” says mom Ashley. “It was good to have a plan.”
Today, Grace is an active toddler doing well in ongoing therapies and has a bright future ahead of her. In the moments that count, trust our team of surgical experts.
Our mission is to enrich family life in South Florida by offering the highest quality publication and an unparalleled commitment to our readers and our community.

Navigating the Hustle with Grace
OK, I know school in Florida started in August, but as a transplanted New Yorker, September will always be the start of a new year for me. In fact, when my kids were in Broward County Public Schools, there were several years when they missed the first day of school because they were still at sleep-away camp in New York. Please don’t judge me. Camp is expensive, and I didn’t want them to miss one day.
Even as an adult, September is when I slink out of the fog of summer and leap into the swing of things. For the record, September should officially replace January as the first month of the year. It would simply make everything easier. None of that “2023/24” reference, which often confuses me.
But once the season gets going, so do my stress levels. And even though my kids are no longer in school, I remember all too well the hectic mornings, the last-minute rush for poster board, and the daily scavenger hunt for matching socks and uniforms. I can recall countless times when I miraculously unearthed the family glue gun, only to find we were out glue sticks. How this is even possible is beyond reason.
So, for the reasons above and all the other hurdles not listed, I searched for content to help busy parents manage the daily hassles of modern parenting. (See page 22.)
You still may not be able to find the glue sticks and socks, but here’s hoping for a smooth school year.

A NEW, INTERACTIVE EXHIBIT AT MODS MELDS MODERN AND NOSTALGIC THEMES
BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAUIn January, Joseph P. Cox, president and CEO of the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) was giving a tour of the museum to a local supporter. When they wandered through the beloved early childhood area called The Discovery Center, which opened in 1992 at the museum’s Las Olas location but dated back to 1976, Cox began to unveil the museum’s unfolding plans for a brand new, permanent exhibit to replace the Center called The Discovery Spot. Suddenly, Cox was interrupted by the father of a 6-year-old playing in the Center nearby.
“Wait. No!” the patron exclaimed with grave disappointment. “Are you going to be getting rid of the oranges?”
For 30 years, the orange grove had been one of the museum’s most iconic, beloved experiences in the Discovery Center. Visiting children could visit a simulated citrus grove, pretend to pick oranges, carry them in a cart, load them into a conveyor belt and imagine themselves harvesting fruit.
“Sometimes the oddest things become iconic,” Cox said. “Literally 12 million children over the course of 30 years played with those oranges — loved these oranges.”
The father then told Cox a wonderful story about how his parents had taken him to the opening week of the Las Olas museum when he was a child, and now he was bringing his 6-year-old to experience the magic of play in MODS’s citrus grove.
“I had to explain, no, the oranges were going to be coming back, but in a new and exciting way,” Cox said. “It was a daunting responsibility to keep nostalgia alive.”
The oranges have indeed been reimagined at the new Discovery Spot exhibit, which held its grand opening for the public on Aug. 4. Key players in the creation of the new exhibit gave inspirational remarks at a ribbon-cutting ceremony before letting a crowd of summer school children sprint into the exhibit to play.
In the new “Citrus Grove” experience, children up to age 6 can still play with oranges, inserting them into an even flashier machine with color-changing, illuminated bubble tubes and a moving conveyor belt.
“There’s a giant orange tree that children can climb up inside, there are vacuum tubes that suck up oranges
inches from the ground up into the tree. And when they’ve loaded 150, the tree explodes and showers, oranges, lemons and limes all over the children,” Cox said. “They go bouncing everywhere. You will hear the delighted shrieks.”
Additionally, children can explore the “Ocean to Air” installations and the “Everglades” area. These playful ecosystems introduce environmental science concepts through handson interactives and role-playing opportunities while allowing children to splash, climb and tinker.
In the 4,000 square-foot space, presented by JM Family Enterprises, children can role-play as airplane pilots, scientists on a research vessel, veterinarians in the field hospital, citrus processors in the juicing factory, animal trackers in the Everglades and more.
A digital painting station allows children to choose a Florida native fish or shark species and then release it into a digital ocean, watching as their chosen species swims by on the Sketch and Release simulated ocean screen.
A lily pad hop invites children to bounce while contributing to a digital projection
mapping experience. The entire exhibit is designed to stimulate STEAM exploration – science, technology, engineering, art and math.
“We're pretty confident that we've created something pretty special that will last for the next generation,” Cox said “This is evidenced by the absolute squeals of delight of the groups of children we’ve been testing it with.”
MODS sees more than 450,000 visitors annually, among them many tourists. In the past year, MODS was named “Broward’s Hub for Resilience Education” by the Board of the Community Foundation of Broward, selected by the LEGO Foundation as one of only 12 museums nationwide to join the “Playful Learning Museum Network” and was selected as one of the winners of the prestigious “2023 IMLS National Medal for Museum Service.”
The Museum hours are Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. MODS is located at 401 SW Second St., Fort Lauderdale. For more information, visit www.mods.org or call 954-467-MODS (6637).

TIPS FOR A STRESS-FREE SCHOOL MORNING ROUTINE
BY TANNI HAAS, PH.D.In my family, school-day mornings used to be really stressful, with everyone running around like chickens with their heads off as we rushed to get ready and out the door. Things have changed. Through trial and error and conversations with other parents, we’ve come up with six things to do so that we’ll have stress-free mornings.
Create a Morning Chore Chart
The best way to start the morning stress-free is to plan as much as possible the night before. To help us, we have a Morning Chore Chart specifying everything we need to do each morning and who’s responsible for it. The chart spells out everything from making the bed (something many teenagers hate to do) to who’s making what at breakfast. We rotate our tasks every week, to be fair. At the bottom of the chart, we list the tasks we must complete on a specific day, like leaving money for an overnight school trip. The chart lists daily chores and individual tasks for specific events.
A Place For Everything — Everything In Its Place
The second key to a stress-free morning is knowing where to find the things you need in the morning. If it were up to my 15-year-old son, he would dump his stuff where he last needed it or toss it on the floor. We’ve agreed on where exactly to put our morning essentials — school bags, sweatshirts, footwear, etc. This simple step makes mornings so much smoother. No one is running around in a frantic state searching for shoes — we can simply grab and go. Doing as many morning tasks as possible the night before is worthwhile — what clothes to wear, packing school bags and lunches, and of course, finishing all homework. No more last-minute homework in the car!
Get a Good Night’s Sleep
It may sound cliché but getting a good night’s sleep is extremely important to reducing morning stress. If one person is sleep-deprived, that person often makes everyone else grumpy as well. To get a good night’s sleep, you’d be wise to turn off all electronics a half an hour before bedtime. Everyone needs time to unwind and shut down. If you want to make absolutely sure that this happens, have your kids charge their devices anywhere else but in their bedrooms.
Wake Up — Then Wake Up Everyone Else
Try waking up 20-30 minutes earlier than everyone else. That’ll give you time to prepare yourself before the morning rush starts. The bathroom is a source of competition and is in constant use until everyone is out the door.
Stay Calm and Positive
When you’re finally ready to wake up the rest of the family, try to be calm and positive. If you’re unhappy about something the kids did or didn’t do, busy mornings aren’t the best time to bring it up. Conflicts are rarely resolved satisfactorily early in the morning when there’s so much to do. Put on some happy, upbeat music instead. That’ll help put everyone in the right frame of mind.
Have A Breakfast With Lots of Protein
When you finally sit down for breakfast, make sure that the whole family gets lots of protein. You’ll all need it for the long day ahead.
Alleviate stress with these tips
Whether your at home, or on-the-go — consider these suggestions:
Nothing says mindfulness like a morning of meditation. Either create your own weekend (or weekday) routine or meet up with a local group. See You On The Sand typically attracts hundreds of participants who meet on the beach at Hollywood North Beach Park for a 45-minuted guided meditation session almost every Sunday morning. The event is free for all ages. For more information, visit www.shellytygielski.com/events/ see-you-on-the-sand
Exercise can be a great way to de-stress, and many public spaces offer free classes for everything from yoga to Zumba. Dania Pointe’s Wellness Wednesdays feature a monthly schedule that typically includes yoga and family Zumba on the lawn, while a variety of Broward County Library branches offer routine classes such as Tai Chi, yoga, dance instruction, meditation and more. Visit www.daniapointe.com or www.broward.org/library.
MINDFULNESS AND
You can practice guided mindfulness and meditation exercises just about anywhere. Various apps offer relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, and meditation sessions; examples include Calm, Headspace, and Insight Timer.

SERVING UP SWEETNESS AT THE BED AND BREAKFAST
BY SUSAN ROSSERSeveral years ago, after a day visiting our kids at summer camp, my husband Richard and I were hot, sweaty and tired. As we checked in to the Cornerstone Victorian Bed and Breakfast, a fellow guest named Lori asked if we had ever stayed there. When we answered “no,” she launched into a detailed and ebullient description of the five-course breakfast we would enjoy the following morning. Lori was in the lobby to retrieve a piece of chocolate cake — an afternoon treat prepared by Louise, who, along with her husband Doug, owns and runs the Cornerstone Victorian in upstate New York.
Seven summers later, as we pulled into the Cornerstone Victorian for our annual camp visiting-day stay, I felt so grateful for this little inn that my eyes welled up with tears. It was dusk, and Louise was in the backyard weeding. The grounds are so impeccably kept, it was hard for me to imagine she could find a weed to pull. Nonetheless, there she was, ready with her huge smile and a welcoming hug. We went inside and spent a few minutes catching up.
Simply put, Louise and Doug are meant to be in the hospitality business. I suspect they are just naturally conscientious, both possessing a fastidious nature coupled with infectious smiles. To stay with them is a treat for the soul.
That first year, I told Richard to grab just one piece of the aforementioned chocolate cake to share in the room. Once I tasted it, I immediately sent him to claim our second piece. This was no ordinary chocolate cake. Louise can bake.
I also suspected our fellow guest Lori might have exaggerated how glorious the breakfast would be. The meal starts with a bowl of fresh fruit and a homebaked goodie.
Sometimes it’s a pecan muffin.
Sometimes it’s a cheese Danish.
Sometimes it’s a crumb cake of sorts. It’s always fantastic. There are five rooms,
and all the guests dine together at one long, beautifully-set table in the formal Victorian dining room. Richard and I looked forward to those breakfasts all year. And yes, visiting the kids at camp was a plus.
So that last year, when we pulled up and Louise welcomed us with a hug, I suddenly realized how lucky I was to have crossed paths with such exceptional people. Most of us can name people in our lives who are of great significance. Maybe it’s our parents, dependable friends, spouses or inspirational teachers.
But some cross our paths and enhance our lives with a lighter touch. And while it may not always be obvious, if we’re lucky, we become cognizant of the sum of those touches. Maybe it’s the librarian who always knows what book you will love; the checkout clerk who frequently asks about your day; or the UPS guy who consistently manages to be in a good mood — they may not rock your world, but they sure make life sweeter.
The next natural question is: Whose life am I enhancing? How can I be more like Doug and Louise?
The last time we visited the Cornerstone Victorian was the summer our youngest was a counselor-in-training at camp. It was a bittersweet summer for both of us. For our daughter, it was the last summer she would live in the Adirondacks with her closest friends for seven glorious weeks. And for Richard and me, it was our swan song at the Cornerstone Victorian. Yet, somehow I have a sneaking suspicion we will visit again. I’ve come to love those mountains. Maybe it’s just that they served as a summer home for my two children. Or perhaps it’s that visiting my kids up in the mountains of New York every summer was such a welcome reprieve. And then there’s just Doug and Louise and their perfect bed and breakfast.
