Moments that Count
From her first steps as a baby to her last chemotherapy treatment, Kealy and her family have celebrated lots of life’s big moments at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.
She was only 10 months old when Carmen Ballestas, MD, diagnosed Kealy with neuroblastoma, a type of cancer, and the family started down an intense yearlong treatment path. The collaborative care and support services we provided were of great comfort to the family.
“Dr. Ballestas really showed us how much she cared for our family and Kealy. At that point I knew that we were in the right place,” says her dad, Mike.
Where you go matters. When it’s your child, trust our experts in the moments that count.

Cherished Heirlooms
As the long, hot days of summer begin to wane, I find myself reflecting on the passage of time. The entrance to my home is adorned with antique bird decoys, bringing a touch of nature indoors – a reminder of the changing seasons, even in a place where autumn is more a promise than a reality. I inherited this collection from my parents, each piece embodying a history that goes beyond its hand-carved and painted exterior.
The story of these bird decoys began in 1978, when my parents, newly settled in Manhattan, discovered antique bird decoys while searching for items to display on stunning étagères they had acquired. What started as a practical solution blossomed into a hobby. Each bird they collected added character to our home. Over time, the decoys transformed from mere decorations into cherished heirlooms, symbolizing my shared love for art and design.
I find myself strangely attached to these birds. I considered selling them, but the amount I’d get doesn’t seem worth separating from their sentimental value.
As I ponder the future of these bird decoys, hanging onto them seems the way to go. These decoys, once collected out of a simple need to decorate, have grown into symbols of my family’s history. They remind me of the love and care my parents put into building a home, and of the countless memories intertwined with these beautiful sculptures.
In a constantly changing world, these antiques are tangible connections to my parents and a time gone by.
As I gaze at them, perched gracefully on the glass shelves, I feel a profound sense of gratitude, knowing that someday these birds will continue to be a part of my children’s lives, carrying forward a legacy of love, family and home.

Fall Flavors
A BUMPER CROP OF FARMERS MARKETS
The colors of the leaves won’t change, and it may not exactly be sweater weather, but Fall in South Florida does signal the start of a fabulous farmers market season. Check out one of the bigger farms for locally grown food, fresh herbs and U-pick areas where you can cut your own sunflowers or fill a bucket with berries. Or, try a smaller community market filled with with fresh produce, baked goods and handicrafts. Here are some of our favorites:
Yellow Green Farmers Market – This outdoor/indoor market is so vast you might want to use the online map to guide you through the variety of booths filled with food, beverages, skincare, artisanal crafts and more. The market also offers scheduled sessions of yoga, art and dance classes, and live entertainment.
3080 Sheridan St., Hollywood, www.ygfarmersmarket.com
Bedner’s Farm – If you’ve never strolled through a sunflower field or plucked fresh produce from the vine, take a trip to Bedner’s. With a U-Pick farm in Boynton Beach and markets in Delray Beach and West Palm Beach, Bedner’s is a go-to for fresh from the farm goods. The family-owned market is open yearround in Boynton Beach, and they have a calendar of seasonal items you can pick yourself during the fall and winter – sunflowers in October, and tomatoes, strawberries and green peppers begin in December. The month-long Fall Festival kicks off September 28 and includes a pumpkin patch, animal EDventure park, tractor ride, corn maze and more. www.bedners.com
Lincoln Road Farmers Market – Every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Lincoln Road transforms into a sprawling fresh market. An array of local growers and food producers sell a variety of fruits, vegetables and more. Plan to spend some time perusing all of the unique products like homemade jams and jellies, pet treats, local honey and potted herbs. Located between Washington Avenue and Meridian Avenue, Miami Beach, www.themarketcompany.org

A Grand Day
For all their wisdom, guidance and unconditional love, every day should be Grandparents Day – but on September 8, we get to officially celebrate the difference they make in our families’ lives. Here are some suggestions to make the day special.
COOK TOGETHER – Have grandma and grandpa share one of their favorite recipes and then have the kids prepare it – with their help. They will be grateful to pass down family recipes while making memories with the kiddos in the kitchen. Add to the excitement by creating a special apron for each family member. Retailers, craft stores and online vendors sell plain aprons and iron-on letters and patches that you can personalize them with.
MEMORY LANE – Printed photos have gone by the wayside these days, but luckily, parents – and grandparents – still have albums and boxes filled with actual photos. Dig out yours and have the grandparents do the same, then gather around while you flip through the pages and share family stories with the kids. It’s fun for them to see that the adults in their lives were once children too.
GARDEN TOGETHER – Slip on some gardening gloves and start a family garden. It can be as easy as an herb or window garden, or an outdoor patch or box. Beans, cucumbers and green onions are all good choices for our balmy fall climate. If you live close enough, the grandparents and grandkids can continue to tend to the garden together as the plants grow.
VIDEO CALL – If grandma and grandpa don’t live within driving distance, schedule a video or FaceTime call when everyone can chat. It’s also a great opportunity for the kids to put on an impromptu performance if they are learning a new instrument, dance routine or sport. They will be happy to see their grandkids talents from across the miles.
Looking for additional ways to celebrate? Visit www.grandparentsday.org for a Grandparents Day Take Action Guide and a list of suggested activities.

TIPS FOR A SMOOTH MORNING ROUTINE
BY CHERIE GOUGH
Iam not a morning person. Life at home with my toddlers used to be filled with mornings cuddling in PJs. Arriving at preschool on time was a challenge; I was often late. When my son started kindergarten, I was determined to get my act together and break the cycle. I gleaned ideas from the web, talked to other moms, and put a system in place. I use these tips to get up and out the door in 45 minutes each morning.
USE SUNDAY WISELY
Think ahead and prepare for the week on Sunday; it helps save time in the long run.
• Bag snacks, fruits and veggies for the week to save time on busy sports practice and running-around days. Doing this in advance also gives you a heads-up if stocking up on lunchbox staples is necessary, thereby avoiding last-minute shopping trips.
• Use an organizing system to put together school outfits for the week. I bought a hanging system for my son’s closet with a compartment for each day. Every Sunday, we check the weather for the upcoming week and put outfits in each compartment. Sometimes my son wants to choose his clothes; sometimes he lets me choose. There is never an argument, question, or decision to make about what to wear in the morning.
• Put an organizing system for shoes and backpacks by the door. Professional organizers often recommend an area with hooks for backpacks and a rack below for shoes. Having homework and permission slips ready in the backpack the night before is crucial.
THE NIGHT BEFORE
• Make lunches the night before. This includes filling water bottles.
• Set the table for breakfast after doing the dinner dishes. You’re already in the kitchen; getting it all done at once makes sense.
IN THE MORNING
• Keep breakfast simple. Cereal with toast, yogurt, or fruit keeps us on the go. Try to sit down and have breakfast as soon as the kids get up. This avoids the grab-and-go breakfast
that research shows can lead to obesity. It also helps avoid last-minute spills on school clothes that could cause a meltdown for kids or parents.
Try this savvy breakfast trick: Always bake a double batch of muffins and freeze the extras. That way, the kids can just take one out and warm it in the microwave.”
If you have a picky eater who wants a hot breakfast, try toaster waffles, make-ahead egg muffins or bagels.
• Have your child use an alarm clock. We bought a Yoda alarm clock and gave it to our son as a present as he entered kindergarten. He was excited by the unexpected gift and in turn, was excited to use it. I was amazed when he skipped into the dining room each morning at 6:15 a.m., ready to start his day.
• Most parents agree with this rule: No electronics before school. They are way too distracting.

Older Children, Get Creative!
A fun way to get tweens and teens out of bed and moving is to turn on music in their rooms. Make it nice and loud and then sing and dance (if necessary), substituting words with phrases about waking up and getting moving. Groans may soon turn into laughter and they start preparing for

Sliding into Pulled Pork
Sliders are universally loved, and this recipe will surely be a hit at any gathering. I’ve included a homemade barbecue sauce recipe, but you can easily use your favorite store-bought brand. This will make enough sliders to feed a crowd of 8 to 10 adults, and the sauce yield is generous enough that you’ll probably have some left over. As an added bonus, the pork freezes beautifully for a quick and easy weeknight dinner.
Pulled Pork Sliders
FOR THE BARBECUE SAUCE
Ingredients:
1/2 cup neutral oil, such as vegetable or avocado
1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
6 garlic cloves, grated
1 6-ounce can tomato paste
1/2 - 3/4 cup cider vinegar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce
1 cup Dijon mustard
1/2 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons molasses
1 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons smoked paprika
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (or more, to taste)
Preparation:
1. Heat the oil in a medium pan over low heat. Add the onions and cook for about 15 minutes until they are translucent, being careful not to brown them.
2. Add the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds.
3. Stir in the tomato paste, cider vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, soy sauce, molasses, ketchup, smoked paprika, chili powder and red pepper flakes.
4. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. You can add more salt, sugar, or vinegar to suit your taste.
5. Use immediately or store in the refrigerator for a few weeks.
Suit your tastebuds by adjusting the sauce ingredients to your liking. For a less sweet sauce, use less sugar. For more spice, add extra red pepper flakes. Adjust the vinegar for desired acidity.
Don’t be afraid to experiment!
FOR THE PULLED PORK
Ingredients:
1 pork butt (about 4 pounds)
1 tablespoon onion powder
2 teaspoons garlic powder
2 teaspoons chipotle chili powder
2 teaspoons smoked paprika
3 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons neutral oil, such as vegetable or avocado
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 12-ounce bottle of good quality beer
Barbecue sauce (see recipe above)
FOR THE SLIDERS
Ingredients:
Slider Buns
Suggested Condiments:
Bread and Butter Pickles
Pickled Red Onions Coleslaw
Preparation:
1. Preheat the oven to 300°F.
2. In a small bowl, combine the onion powder, garlic powder, chipotle powder, brown sugar, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper.
3. If the pork is tied, untie it. Score any fat layer with a knife Season the pork all over with the spice mixture. For best results, season the pork and let it sit in the refrigerator overnight.
4. Heat the oil in a large Dutch oven. Add the pork and brown on all sides.
5. Add the beer and 1 1/2 cups of barbecue sauce, making sure the meat is just barely covered.
6. Cover and cook in the oven for about 4 hours until the meat is fork-tender.
7. Remove the meat from the pot and shred it using two forks. Mix in as much of the sauce as you like. For crispy bits, place the shredded pork on a rimmed baking sheet and broil for 1 or 2 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.
Preparation:
Pile the shredded pork onto the bottom half of each bun. Top with pickles, pickled red onions or cole slaw. Place the top half of the bun on each slider and enjoy.

HOW CREATIVITY SHAPES
SUCCESSFUL CHILDREN
BY SANDI SCHWARTZ
How much time do your children spend dabbling in the arts – to freely express themselves in creative ways? Creativity is the ability to think in unusual, divergent ways. It does not only refer to artistic and musical expression; it is also essential for science, math, and social and emotional intelligence. Creativity has been shown to develop so many positive characteristics and to help children lead happy, successful lives. Unfortunately, creativity is becoming somewhat endangered in this generation because technology and busy schedules are taking priority over the arts. We can guide our children’s growth and impact their success by incorporating creativity into their daily routine.
Benefits of Creativity
When children grow up with opportunities to be creative, they can develop a number of key skills that will help them succeed throughout their lives.
Develop-Problem Solving Skills
The arts help children learn how to think in innovative ways when making decisions and solving problems. Many experts find that creativity actually rewires the brain to think ‘outside of the box,’ a very important skill for all aspects of life. When children are creative, they tap into intuition, imagination and playfulness, which help to solve complex problems. Without even realizing it, children working on creative projects are being challenged to solve problems like what colors to use, how to make a line and what size to make something.
Researchers from Michigan State University have found a strong correlation between childhood engagement in the creative arts and measurable success later in life. Children who were exposed to a wide variety of arts and crafts were more likely to create unique inventions worthy of patents, come up with ideas good enough to start a new company or publish provocative papers on science and technology.

INSPIRING INNOVATION
Creativity-boosting Apps for Kids
BY TANNI HAAS, PH.D.
Technology can be a great assistant when encouraging your kids to become more creative. Here are some of the very best creativity-boosting apps for kids. They’re all completely free, so encourage your kids to download an app – or three!
COLOR BAND
(Available at: Apple Appstore; Age range: 5-8)
Color Band introduces young kids to the fun of making music while at the same time encourages them to draw. It has 80 prerecorded instruments and sound effects that are represented by different colors. Some colors contain multiple sound effects, while others include entire scales or chords. Using different colors to draw a picture, they create unique musical compositions, which they can play back by waving their hands in front of the screen.
LET’S CREATE: POTTERY
(Available at: Apple Appstore, Google Play; Age range: 9-18)
Let’s Create: Pottery teaches kids to sculpt pottery and make beautiful pieces of artwork without the messiness of real clay. They can choose to copy pre-existing pieces from different cultures or create their own pottery from scratch. While the virtual clay is spinning on the pottery wheel, kids mold it by tapping or pressing lightly on the screen.
Once they’re done, they get to fire their pottery in the kiln and then decorate their creations with colors and patterns.
PAPER
(Available: Apple Appstore; Age range: 13-18)
Paper is great for kids who love to draw. It resembles a digital notebook and has various tools for outlining, sketching and coloring drawings. The app makes it easy to rearrange objects on the page. Kids can also import photos and incorporate them into their drawings.
continued on page 43
PLUM'S CREATURIZER
(Available at: Apple Appstore; Age range: 5-8)
Plum’s Creaturizer will get your kids interested in photography. Developed by PBS Kids, this award-winning app lets kids create their own colorful creatures by combining different body parts, and then encourages them to photograph these creatures in four different “habitats.” The photos can be combined into slideshows depicting a day in the life of their creations.
STORY DICE – STORY TELLING
(Available at: Apple Appstore; Age range: 5-18)
Story Dice – Story Telling is sure to get the creative juices flowing. This app has 40 virtual dice, each with six images from different categories, for a total of 240 images. Kids shake their devices to roll the dice and create stories that connect all the images. Encourage your kids to use this app with their friends to see who comes up with the most suspenseful or fun stories.
TOONTASTIC 3D
(Available at: Google Play; Age range: 5-12)
Few things are more fun than making your own cartoons. Toontastic 3D is an app that lets you do just that. It includes various story outlines, scenes and dozens of colorful characters. Kids can either use those characters or create their own with simple drawing tools, press “record” and then move characters around and narrate the story with their own voice recording. They can add a musical score and put all the pieces together in a single 3D cartoon.
VIDEO STAR
(Available at: Apple Appstore, Google Play; Age range: 13-18)
Video Star teaches kids how to create and star in their own music videos. After selecting a favorite song, they shoot a video that shows them lip-synching and dancing to the music. The app has hundreds of built-in visual and sound effects that they can use in their videos.

To Get Your Children Excited About Being Creative
1. Sign them up for art, music, drama or dance classes.
2. Attend creative performances such as concerts, theater, ballet, and art festivals.
3. Keep a bin of art supplies in the house and ask them to use their imagination to create.
4. Use art to teach science, math, reading and other subjects.
5. Invite your children into the kitchen to cook or bake with you.
6. Include fun arts and crafts projects during playdates and birthday parties.
7. Allow for plenty of artistic free play in your home, such as singing, dancing, puppet shows and reading books aloud with expression.
8. Study famous artists and their works by getting books at the library or watching videos. Challenge your children to do their version of the famous artwork.
. Play games that involve creativity like Pictionary (drawing) and charades (drama) or make up your own like a songwriting or poetry contest.
. Have a talent show or make up your own songwriting or poetry contest.
Express Emotions
Creativity also provides an outlet for children to express and cope with their emotions in a safe, calm way. Art offers a way to communicate ideas, feelings, and solutions without speaking or writing. When children have the capability to express emotions in this way, they can better manage challenges and issues like anger, anxiety and depression.
Improve Concentration
Creativity helps children learn to concentrate and focus more effectively on the task at hand, which is so important for studying in working in the future. Artists can become so absorbed in their project that they reach a state of flow or the sense of being completely engaged in an activity to the point of being in a near meditative state.
Persevere and Work Hard
Creativity helps children build patience and perseverance as they develop new skills and even face frustration and setbacks. Art allows them to try different approaches until they are satisfied with their creation. Perseverance is a critical skill to have in an increasingly competitive world, where people need to continually adapt to changes and develop new skills.
Achieve Academic Awards
Children who participate in arts-based programs are more
successful academically, according to a Stanford University study. Some of their achievements included being more likely to win an academic award such as the honor roll, to receive a community service award and to participate in a math or science fair. These students also scored higher on the SAT.
Adopt a More Flexible and Worldly View
When children are exposed to the arts, they experience multiple cultures and ideas that they are not familiar with. This helps them learn to think with an open mind and realize that there are multiple points of view. A study at the University of Kansas found that during a visit to an art museum, students displayed higher levels of social tolerance, exhibited more empathy and developed an interest in art and cultural institutions.
Build Confidence
Children who are encouraged to think creatively tend to have higher self-esteem and confidence. One reason for this is because children learn to feel pride in their original work. Also, many types of art forms, like drama and dance, require individuals to build these attributes in order to perform in front of an audience.
How To Raise More Creative Children
You may be surprised to find out that creativity can be learned. It is not necessarily a natural talent that we are born with. Actually, there is so much that we can do to expose our children to opportunities for creativity so they can develop these amazing skills.

Fashion Forward
SWEATPANTS AND THE FALL OF CIVILIZATION
BY SUSAN ROSSER
My high school had a rather strict dress code. As I recall, I loathed the code. But looking back, it certainly served a purpose. Girls were required to wear skirts, and boys had to wear a shirt and tie. Once a month, the school hosted “Grub Day,” where students paid one dollar to dress casually. Everyone showed up in jeans and gladly spent the dollar. All the money raised on Grub Day went to charity, and different grades decided where the money went. It was an effortless way to raise funds for causes important to the student body.
The kids loved Grub Day. The teachers? Not so much. The faculty frequently complained that students clad in denim behaved worse than when outfitted according to the dress code. In fact, I remember several saying it was like night and day. And I don’t doubt it. I remember feeling different at school when I sported my jeans. In my corduroy skirts, fair isle sweaters and argyle socks, I felt like the kind of young lady who might end up in a place like Vassar or Bryn Mawr. On the days I wore jeans, I swaggered around school like an extra in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. All of this anecdotal evidence begs the question: do our clothes influence our behavior? We’ve probably all seen video outtakes of people acting up on airplanes, restaurants and coffee shops. You know – the passenger who pitches a fit because the flight attendant asked them to put their tray table in the upright position or put their
ferret back into the pet carrier because another passenger has an aversion to rodents on planes. I started thinking about the first flights I took back in the 1970s. My parents and I certainly didn’t dress formally for air travel. There were no ties or pillbox hats. But, I can’t imagine we would have worn anything as casual as gym clothes either.
I understand we all want to be as comfortable as possible on long flights or while running errands. But perhaps our standards have plunged to an unacceptable level. No one appreciates a pair of leggings as much as I do. Comfort is vital to my happiness. But I have been asking myself if maybe things have gone too far. I ran out to pick up some bagels Sunday morning, and the woman in front of me was wearing pajama bottoms – in a restaurant. Ok, it’s a casual bagel place, but PJs?
On the flip side, when I determine an occasion calls for actual clothes with buttons, zippers and – dare I say – pleats, I feel different. I feel serious – as if I am now part of a social pact with the people around me. I am not suggesting we go back to Victorian times and slip into our corsets. But, we need to consider how our clothes make us feel not just on the outside, but on the inside – which is probably the whole point of fashion in the first place.
