FOLLOWING A DIFFERENT BEAT.

Moving from Broward to Ave Maria puzzled Ariel and Juan’s family and friends. “We’ll give it a year,” they were told. “I wasn’t sure, either,” says Ariel. But a focus on finding a better place to raise a family led them here. “Both kids have so many friends. My son loves playing baseball, and he and I are taking drumming lessons,” says Ariel. As for the skeptics? “Her parents are moving a couple of blocks from here,” laughs Juan.

Following your own drum has its benefits. Especially when you follow it to Ave Maria, A Big Kind of Small Town.

WINTERFEST BOAT PARADE SETS SAIL

There is nothing quite like it. The beauty of the Winterfest Boat Parade. Now in its 53rd year, this one-of-a-kind floating procession will make its way along a 12-mile Intracoastal route on Saturday, December 14 while more than a million viewers look on.

The annual event includes a range of boats from small privately owned boats to showboats to corporate mega-yachts. Some will have music and entertainment, and all will be decked out in holiday lights and décor. Spectators can also expect to see displays that pay homage to our oceans, wetlands and waterways as the 2024 theme is “From Sawgrass to Seagrass: Waves of Holiday Cheer.” This year, the Co-Grand Marshals are actor and musician Jack Wagner, and Florida Panthers mascots Stanley C. Panther and Viktor E. Rat.

The Winterfest Boat Parade is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., with a pre-show of non-motorized vehicles beginning at 6 p.m.

The route begins at the Stranahan House, traveling east along the New River in Fort Lauderdale to the Intracoastal Waterway north to Lake Santa Barbara in Pompano Beach. Spectators are invited to bring lawn chairs to view the parade from the shore, or you can purchase tickets to the Parade Viewing Area at Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park where there will be seating as well as live entertainment, activities, games, vendors and more.

Open Enrollment Period Checklist

With the Open Enrollment Period underway the best way to find the right health plan for you and your lifestyle is a checklist away. Follow these simple steps and be on your way.

REVIEW. Look back at your family’s needs in the last year. Which services did you need or use?Are there any special needs? This will help you evaluate plans for next year.

SET A ROUGH BUDGET. Different plans require you to cover different amounts of your medical expenses. Generally, the more you pay monthly (called your premium), the more of your expenses the plan will cover. If you usually don’t have a lot of medical expenses, a lower-premium plan might be best, or vice versa. Knowing this and having a basic idea of what you can pay each month will help you narrow in on a plan.

LOOK AHEAD. Think about any recent changes in your health or lifestyle in the last year. Do you have a new family member or a new address? Any new medical conditions, prescriptions you’re taking or upcoming surgeries? These things might affect the type of plan you want.

SEE IF YOU QUALIFY FOR HELP. It’s possible you can receive help paying for premiums and other expenses. Four out of five people are now eligible for a subsidy that keeps monthly health plan payments under $10.* Find out if you can be saving money toward your monthly plan payments.

MUST-HAVES. Make a list of everything you know you need or want. Do you have certain prescriptions? Are there doctors, hospitals or services you know you’ll want to use? These may affect the plan you choose.

GATHER FAMILY DETAILS. Have the names, mailing and home addresses, and Social Security numbers of everyone you will cover in your plan. Having these key pieces of information will make the application process easier.

CONTACT AN APPOINTED FLORIDA BLUE AGENT. Exclusive agents are happy to help you enroll or answer any questions you have. If you need help, you’re not alone. Bûche de Noël

Impress your dinner guests this holiday season with a homemade bûche de Noël. Of course, you may need to have the remainder of the dinner catered, as this recipe is quite an undertaking. In fact, if you actually pull it off, it could be considered a Christmas miracle — or whatever holiday you celebrate.

Ilove to bake, but a bûche de Noël (also known as a Yule log) seemed outrageously ambitious. I envisioned a kitchen disaster story featuring failed attempts with crumbling cakes and separated cream. And truth be told, if chocolate wasn’t involved, I would have lost my nerve. Here is my story.

A bûche de Noël includes three recipes: one for the cake, one for the cream filling and another for the frosting. This means you will utilize nearly every bowl in your kitchen, including the ones buried deep within your cabinets. Seriously, engage some elves to help with the cleanup.

Apparently, it is easier to roll up a cake while it is still warm and in a somewhat submissive state. But, you can’t put cream filling on hot cake. So all bûche de Noël recipes call for rolling the cake while it is warm and letting it cool in that rolled-up position. I won’t lie. This part frightened me. I felt like a first-year surgical resident about to perform a triple bypass on an unsuspecting patient — with no senior surgeon nearby to walk me through it.

And while I love to bake, I prefer recipes that require little to no decoration. And yet, I found myself baking a cake meant to resemble a fallen log in a Bavarian forest. I suppose I was motivated by the chocolate and mascarpone.

I primarily followed the recipe I found on www.kingarthurbaking.com (with just a slight variation on the cream filling and the addition of a bit of cherry jam.)

This recipe was definitely out of my baking comfort zone, but I know some readers will love making this as a family project on a rainy day during the holiday break or maybe as a hostess gift. I was so wary of overcooking the cake (which would make rolling nearly impossible) that I undercooked it just a touch. Still, the frosting and the filling were so scrumptious that even a semi-failed cake couldn’t ruin this show-stopper.

To unwrap the recipe, visit www.southfloridafamilylife.com.

VacayHacks to keep your wallet intact

Taking the family on a vacation can be pretty expensive. Thankfully, there are things you can do to save money on your trip. Based on my own experiences and conversations with other parents, I’ve pulled together a list of some great money-saving tips.

Save Up Money

My partner and I each put $5 in an empty coffee tin every evening all year round. By the time the holiday season comes around, we’ve saved up more than $3,500. That helps cover our vacation expenses. If $5 a day is above your budget, putting aside any amount on a daily basis can quickly add up to a nice chunk of change.

Create A Budget

Create a detailed budget for what you’re able, and willing, to spend on your vacation – and then stick to it. Overspending often occurs because people don’t have a budget, and instead, pay for things without considering how much they’re spending in total. Divide your budget into transportation, accommodations and food, and factor in money for things that’ll make the vacation extra memorable for the kids, like amusement park entrance fees. You want to have fun but not to go broke!

Know The Exchange Rate

When choosing your vacation destination, it’s important for your family to discuss and decide together where you’d like to go. It can be challenging to have an enjoyable vacation if no one is excited about the chosen location. The foreign exchange rate is a helpful indicator of expenses. Exchange rates vary significantly, so make sure to obtain the most current information. The more foreign currency you receive for each dollar, the more economical your vacation will be.

Choose Your Accommodation Wisely

You can save significant money by opting for a house swap or renting a home, such as through Airbnb. If you prefer to stay in a hotel, consider booking accommodations farther from the

city center. Look for places that have kitchenettes or offer complimentary breakfasts. Staying outside the city center not only reduces costs but also provides an opportunity to see how local residents live while you drive to explore the area’s attractions.

Invite Family or Friends to Join You

If you are considering swapping or renting a place, invite family or friends to join you. This will significantly reduce the cost of accommodations per person. If your kids bring some of their closest friends along, they will have someone to hang out with, making everything much more enjoyable.

Reserve Activities Online

Save money by creating a detailed itinerary of what you plan to do when you arrive, and then make reservations online before you go. Most tourist sites offer discounts if you reserve your tickets online and in advance. Also, look for family passes for extra discounts and tourist passes that cover multiple attractions. By reserving everything online before you go, you also avoid standing in long lines, which leaves everyone tired and frustrated.

Look For Free Activities

Some of the most fun things you can do on any vacation won’t cost you anything. Most vacation spots have special celebrations during the holidays. Do a little online prep to learn about free activities at your destination or pick up brochures at the local visitor’s bureau.

Plan Your Meals

When it comes to food, plan your meals in advance and limit the number of times you eat out. One option is to eat breakfast in, pack your lunch to go, and only eat out for dinner. Another way to reduce expenses is to look for restaurants where kids eat free or at a discount. Many restaurants allow kids ages 12 or younger to eat for free; other restaurants offer a kids’ menu with smaller portions at lower prices.

The Credit Cards

Only use credit cards if you’re absolutely sure you can pay them off as soon as you return – and beware of sky-high interest rates. Some credit cards offer discounts on local attractions and don’t charge any foreign transaction fees. And, you can collect points for your next vacation.

Buy Post Cards Instead of Souvenirs

Many people spend a ton of money on souvenirs. They’re exciting at first, but kids quickly lose interest in them and they ultimately end up unused or in the garbage. As an alternative, encourage the kids buy one postcard from each destination, which they can use to write down their favorite memories, and then mail it home. It’ll make for a great collection that they can keep in an album and look back on to reminisce about their vacation.

Viva Las Vegas

A JACKPOT BIRTHDAY BASH

They say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but this particular birthday bash in Sin City just lends itself to storytelling.

It was a year and a half ago when one of my close friends posed the question – “would you come to my 50th birthday bash in Vegas?” Instant answer: YES! But as the months rolled on, the reality dawned on me that I may have forgotten how to interact with a group of adults… for days. For the past two decades, my life has been a fusion of playdates, carpools, school pickup lines and sporting practices. Don’t get me wrong, I have loved every moment of mommying, but now with one daughter in college and another in high school, my social game lacks.

Months before the trip, the group texts – from the five other couples attending – came rolling in. What’s everyone wearing? Where should we eat? What should we do? The birthday girl – a.k.a head of party operations – sent out organized lists of everything from what we should pack to our daily itinerary of Vegas Strip stops. I raced out to buy clothes. Yoga pants and torn T-shirts were not on the packing list. I looked up the menus – and was excited by the notion that not one had chicken nuggets or mac and cheese as offerings. And, I searched high and low for the perfect pair of walking shoes –I’m still practical.

Finally, the day of the trip arrived. I slipped on my “Vegas Trip” T-shirt (provided by my friend as official airplane attire), and my husband and I jetted off, heading into this new realm of an adults-only adventure. But as the plane lifted off, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had forgotten something. My kids… my pets… my responsibilities.

What would I do without them?

As much as I missed them, here’s the answer:

After landing in Vegas, we were greeted by a blazing blast of dusty desert heat and a rock-star limo driver, who could easily be mistaken for the lead singer of Metallica. He was eager to lead us to adventure. I dug deep to find my second wind. I glanced at my watch. And as my phone dialed back the 3-hour time change, my body called for a nap. But my mind quickly corrected the consideration – there would be none of that. “This is Vegas… enjoy the ride!” my mind reminded me.

After a short cruise and a bit of car karaoke, we arrived at New York, New York Hotel & Casino. Our group of a dozen travelers, with three times as many suitcases, poured out of the party bus to check-in. The hotel is situated smack-dab on the Vegas strip, making it convenient to walk the four-mile stretch and explore the endless around-the-clock dining and entertainment options. I put on my bedazzled baseball cap and prepared for the long haul. The next three days were a whirlwind. There was dining, dancing, ziplining, singing, swimming, shows, shopping, walking, walking, walking. Did I say walking? We saw things on Fremont Street and the Vegas Strip that I still cannot explain. We gambled a little. We laughed a lot. And at the end of the day, it was an amazing experience filled with food, fun and fabulous people. Not only did I put on two pounds during the excursion (hello fried chicken and waffles!), but I also gained 10 new friends.

Shannon Pease-Severance, a freelance writer and editor, is betting that her next stop, Music City, will be just as memorable.
