CRAFT FORM
Introduction My passion to make unexpected products that can delight people and help them learn. This is what brought me from Beijing to the California College of the Arts and into the world of Design.
When I was a child, I liked playing with Legos, Jenga, and jigsaws and reading fairy tales and fantasy; when I was a teenager I liked playing with Rubic’s cube, go, and checkers and reading detective novels and science fiction. I enjoy activating my brain when I’m playing with toys and feeling surprised when I’m reading. When I was 17, I told my father: “I want to make toys that tap into intelligence and imagination,” so, I chose to major in industrial design. My interests soon shifted to art and music after I came to the California College of the Arts. I like Avant-garde artists like Monet, Picasso, and Mondrian, and Avant-garde music like The who, King Crimson, and Opeth. They break any rules that they can break and still maintain harmony and beauty. But now, I’m no longer just passively being astonished by others’ imagination and intelligence. I incorporate my imagination and intelligence in my designs. Design affects people’s everyday lives and deeply influences humanity. It should be able to improve the way people interact with the world around them. Over the last century, technology has been developing too fast, which has made people forget some of their intuitive abilities. I want my designs to guide people to think and improve their abilities, but not make them lazy. I also want my designs to be out of the ordinary and make people happier. Modern design should improve people’s lives in a mental way as much as a physical way and this is what I demonstrate in my portfolio.

Final decision: Light under the brim turns on when the brim is flipped
Sketch Inspired by fashion hats that have long brims that can be flipped over.
Modelmaking
Construct paper to find aesthetic shape.
Use different colors to create sewing pattern for outer shape.
Designed mechanics and chose conductive fabric to provide the best user experience.

Lizzy is an auto-stirring stove-top cooker powered by heat. When seniors are hungry but have mobility issues, she will be a good friend to accompany with them in the kitchen. She cooks varieties of healthy food like porridge, soups, stews and sauces to promote healthy eating choices. More than just a machine, it features a stirring paddle, a timer and two rubber handles. She gets energy from the heat of the stove so she will never get tired.

Project 6 Light for Houseboat
Design for houseboat residents
Problem It’s not desirable to install lights on Post and Beam ceilings in houseboats
Hallway is dark. Light is far away
No light inside the deepest room
Put plenty of table/floor
Too many different narrow spaces make it neccessary for multiple lights.

The Bevis Light
Removable ights
Houseboat
The Bevis Light is designed to light the crowded small spaces of houseboats and other similar locations where one light cannot light every corner. It can be installed on the wall besides the entrance of the room, like a hand, with fingers—each finger is an individual light. The small light—the little finger—will light up automatically in the night. The rest of the lights are removable and rechargeable, so that the residents can use them anywhere. If guests come, everyone can get one light. Bring everyone together with the warmth of the Bevis Light.
