FINEST ORGANIZATION
WITH A CAUSE
Tacoma Rescue Mission
Tacoma Rescue Mission (TRM) was founded in 1912 by compassionate community members to provide food and shelter to the hungry. From those humble beginnings, TRM has grown into an organization that delivers emergency shelters, affordable permanent housing, daily meals, and outreach services. “Our mission is to provide God’s help, hope, and healing to our neighbors in need,” says Duke Paulson, Executive Director of TRM. TRM envisions that “every person experiencing homelessness has access to a complete and permanent pathway out of poverty as they pursue God’s plan for their lives.”
In 2023 alone, TRM delivered more than 281,000 meals and helped nearly 3,800 people with its extensive services. Among them was Kristi, who shared, “Before I came to the Mission, my son and I were living in my car. Life was hard...but things started to look up for us, giving us hope.”
TRM’s values are rooted in grace, treating every person with dignity, and supporting each individual’s journey. Expansion plans include renovating the men’s shelter, doubling addiction recovery services, and opening a new campus called The Good Neighbor Village (GNVLife.org) in Spanaway for Pierce County’s chronically homeless. Through volunteer programs and compassionate service, TRM continues uplifting those in need. Visit TRM.org/volunteer to learn more about how you can help.

FINEST PERSON OF THE YEAR
Erin Guinup
HARBOR LOCAL’S
Erin Guinup, the Executive and Artistic Director of the Tacoma Refugee Choir, brings her deep passion for music and community to her work. Reflecting on her journey, Erin shares, “Music and community have been the twin pillars of my life's work.” After experiencing bullying in her youth, she found refuge in the choir room—a space where she felt safe and valued. This experience inspired her commitment to building supportive spaces, especially for those who have endured trauma. “For those who have experienced trauma, singing together becomes a way to reclaim their story,” she says.
Being honored as the Finest Person by her community is a source of gratitude and motivation for Erin. “It reflects not just my work but the power of our community to create spaces where everyone belongs.” Her approach centers on love and understanding, as she believes that real change happens when people feel heard and valued.
“Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply listen,” Erin explains. Her work with the choir shows how music can bring people together, creating bonds far beyond the notes and building connection and strength, one song at a time.

Celebrate 253:
Shop local
Support community businesses all year long
by LIKE MEDIA TEAM
As the holiday season approaches, the convenience of online shopping and big-box retailers might seem appealing, but this year, there’s an even better way to make your purchases count—by shopping local. Supporting nearby businesses during the holidays brings meaning to each gift and strengthens the community we’re all part of. These benefits extend well beyond the holiday season; shopping local all year round helps to build a stronger, more vibrant neighborhood.
Special treasures that feel exclusive to our region
Each time you choose a local shop, you directly support the livelihood of those who live and work in your community. For instance, a piece from Tacoma Glassblowing Studio is more than just art; it’s a product of local talent and tradition, with every piece crafted by skilled artisans living here at home. When you buy locally, you’re not only purchasing a unique, beautiful item, but supporting a local artist and community member in sustaining their work year-round.
Shopping locally brings unique finds that turn gifts into something truly personal. Imagine giving a loved one a carefully curated item from Rain City Rae’s in Tacoma. Their items reflect the spirit of the Pacific Northwest, offering special treasures that feel exclusive
to our region. This kind of thoughtful, one-of-a-kind gift shows the recipient that you put care and intention into finding something unique—something they won’t find anywhere else.
But it’s not just about items; local businesses also offer experiences that make meaningful, memorable gifts. Consider a rejuvenating massage from Elements of Sunshine on Puyallup Avenue for a loved one who needs relaxation. Or treat someone with a personalized skincare treatment at Gig Harbor Aesthetics. These experiences are more than pampering sessions; they’re ways to connect with local businesses that contribute to the well-being of our neighbors year-round.
Fostering an environment where new ideas Flourish
Supporting local shops also fuels the economy in ways big retailers simply can't. Spending your holiday dollars at places like Local Whimsy in Gig Harbor doesn’t just help one business thrive—it keeps money circulating within the community, creating jobs and supporting public services. Because every dollar spent locally helps to strengthen the local economy, shopping your local retailers throughout the year contributes to the growth of the entire area.
Local businesses also offer an experience you can’t find at large chain stores. Boutiques like Dolly Mama Boutique on Pioneer Way are known for their attentive and knowledgeable staff, who are eager to help you find just the right piece. The welcoming atmosphere and personal attention you receive make the experience enjoyable, ensuring each purchase feels thoughtful and genuine, not just a quick transaction.
When you shop locally, you support creativity and innovation within the community. People like the artists behind Sarah Nicole Artistry bring fresh, original products to the area. By supporting their work year-round, you’re fostering an environment where new ideas flourish, allowing local entrepreneurs to thrive and bring their talents to the community.
And let’s not forget the small pleasures of shopping locally all year. Picking up treats from Gig Harbor Candy Company can become a family tradition, adding a local flavor to your celebrations and everyday life. These small but delightful experiences connect us to our neighborhoods, creating lasting memories beyond just one season.
Shopping local is about more than gifts and seasonal shopping—it’s about building lasting connections. Frequenting nearby stores throughout the year builds relationships with business owners and fellow shoppers, creating a sense of community. Getting to know the people behind shops like Rain City Rae’s or Elements of Sunshine adds a layer of warmth and familiarity, turning every purchase into a shared experience. These connections make each trip to a local business more than just a transaction; they make it a meaningful part of life in the community.
This holiday season and beyond, shopping local is a powerful choice that keeps our neighborhoods vibrant and our communities strong. Businesses like Tacoma Glassblowing Studio, Dolly Mama Boutique,
and Gig Harbor Aesthetics are just a few of the many local gems that rely on community support year-round. By choosing to shop local, you’re investing in the future of these businesses, ensuring they can continue enriching our neighborhoods.
So, as you make your holiday list, remember that shopping locally can make a difference that lasts beyond the season. By supporting these businesses throughout the year, you’re helping create a thriving community where everyone benefits. Let’s make shopping local a tradition beyond the holidays, ensuring that our towns remain full of unique, creative, and welcoming businesses all year round.
Laser Dentistry at Uptown Dental
Advanced technology for pain-free treatment
EXPERT IN
Dentistry
courtesy of DR. RHONDA SAVAGE, UPTOWN DENTAL & WELLNESS CENTER
The latest advancements in laser dentistry treatments help to ensure comfortable and efficient procedures. Dental practices have embraced innovative laser technology to offer patients precise, minimally invasive dental treatments. With laser dentistry, we can provide services to effectively decrease pain, speed up the healing process, and enhance the restoration of dental health.
Laser dentistry is particularly beneficial for patients with dental anxiety, offering a calmer and more comfortable experience compared to traditional methods. By avoiding the sounds and sensations of drills, patients experience less fear and discomfort during their visits.
How Laser Dentistry Works
Laser dentistry combines focused light beams at specific wavelengths to pierce hard and soft tissues throughout the oral cavity. This technology is versatile, offering a range of therapies, including gum disease treatment, facial cosmetic enhancements, and diode laser treatments. By reducing the need for unnecessary drills and sutures, laser dentistry helps make dental visits a much more pleasant experience. Patients benefit from faster procedures with fewer complications, leading to improved comfort and efficiency. The ability to precisely target tissues also contributes to a more accurate and minimally invasive approach.
Benefits of Laser Dentistry
There are significant benefits that dental lasers offer to enhance patient comfort, aesthetics, and ease of care:
Less Pain and Stress: Laser dentistry usually doesn’t require anesthesia, allowing patients to stay comfortable while easing any fear of visiting the dentist. It’s especially useful for those who avoid treatment due to anxiety.
Faster Healing: Soft tissue lasers work with such precision that they require less healing and recovery time for the patient.
Less Bleeding: Laser therapy’s specific wavelength helps to restrict bleeding and swelling, leading to a faster, easier recovery after procedures. This results in a more efficient healing process with fewer side effects.
What Laser Dentistry Does
Laser dentistry is used for several procedures to improve the outcomes of treatment, including:
Gum Disease Treatment: Laser technology allows for the targeted removal of diseased tissue while leaving healthy gum tissue intact, leading to faster recovery and improved results.
Cosmetic Dentistry: For patients seeking to enhance the appearance of their smile, laser dentistry can be used for teeth whitening, reshaping gums, or performing other cosmetic adjustments with precision and minimal discomfort.
Laser dentistry offers a more natural, less invasive route toward preserving and restoring your dental health, promoting a more positive overall experience for dental patients.
“My practice philosophy has always been to maintain healthy teeth and gums with the most effective and conservative treatments.”
Discover Gig Harbor: 2024 SHOP
SOCIAL
EVENT
Supporting local dreams, building community bonds
Hello.
I'm Julia Runyan with The Runyan Group. This year, I was honored to sponsor the Shop Social event, previously known as Girls Night Out in the Harbor. On November 14th, 2024, from 12-8 pm, this event was more than just a shopping day—it was a lively celebration of our community and the amazing local businesses that make Gig Harbor so special.
Why Shop Social Matters
Gig Harbor isn’t just a beautiful harbor town; it’s a tight-knit community with a rich history and dynamic small businesses that are the backbone of our local economy. The Gig Harbor Waterfront Alliance is pivotal in organizing events like Shop Social that keep our community thriving.
Shop Social was all about bringing people together. Locals and visitors had the chance to fully immerse themselves in downtown Gig Harbor's one-ofa-kind shopping atmosphere. With businesses offering exclusive discounts, tasty food and drinks, and fun little gifts, attendees were treated to an unforgettable day.
The Impact of Community Support
I'm a hometown girl with deep ties to Gig Harbor. My family arrived here in the late 1800s, and we've
been part of the real estate landscape since 1969. Supporting our local businesses isn't just a business decision for me; it's a personal mission. When local businesses thrive, the entire community reaps the benefits. More jobs, better community services, and a vibrant local culture are just some rewards of a robust local economy.
The Power of Shopping Local
By shopping locally, people not only find unique, highquality products but also foster a sense of community pride. At Shop Social, you can discover one-of-a-kind artworks, handcrafted items, and locally sourced goods. Each purchase at Shop Social contributes to sustaining the livelihoods of our neighbors—the artisans, entrepreneurs, and shopkeepers who make Gig Harbor a wonderful place to live and visit.
A Day of Fun and Giving Back
On November 14th, attendees enjoyed a day of shopping, socializing, and strengthening community bonds. Friends, family, and neighbors came together to experience everything downtown Gig Harbor had to offer. Their participation helped ensure that events like Shop Social continue to flourish. The last Shop Social event was a huge success, and we're excited to make the next one even better. We look forward to seeing you there!

Winter Decorating Tips
To make your home look warm and welcoming, follow these easy decorating tips to make it feel cozy this winter.
Layering with textures
When it gets cold outside, create an inviting haven by adding soft textures throughout your home. Put plush blankets and chunky knit throws over your couches and chairs. Layering rugs in living areas adds warmth underfoot and also helps to create an inviting atmosphere.
Use nature
Bring the outside in. Use seasonal decorations like pinecones and evergreen branches to create a wintery feel. Rustic wood is a popular natural element to incorporate into your home and is a great way to refresh your look using natural materials during winter.
Warm lighting
Change all the bright lighting in your home to warmer hues. Use candles, string lights, and soft lamps to create a warm glow during the long winter nights. Try lanterns or candles in seasonal scents such as cinnamon or pine.

Community Leader and Culinary Artist: Trish Huff of Morso Bistro Gives Back in Gig Harbor
by PAIGE SCHULTE REALTOR + COMMUNITY
Trish Huff, owner of Morso Bistro and Market in Gig Harbor, brings more than just expertly crafted dishes and exceptional wines to her community. With degrees in Restaurant and Hotel Management and Culinary Arts and over 15 years in the wine industry, Trish is dedicated to hospitality, quality, and community service. Inspired to create a gathering space for good food and wine, Trish and her husband Devin opened Morso Bistro and Market in January 2020, combining her passions for cooking, wine, and hospitality.
Morso Bistro is more than a restaurant—it’s a welcoming space with breathtaking views of Puget Sound and the Cascade Mountains. Open for lunch, happy hour, and dinner, the bistro features New American and Italian cuisine crafted from locally sourced ingredients, with options for small plates, bites, and entrées. Small Steps for a Successful New Year
At the beginning of a new year, it’s easy to get caught up in setting big goals for the future. But if you often give up on your resolutions, it might be time to change how you set them. Instead of trying to do too much at once, focus on a few small, achievable goals and build momentum over time. If you have bigger aspirations, break them into smaller tasks that bring you closer to achieving them. Celebrate each small milestone, even if it’s just mentally. Consistency is key: find habits that lead you to become the person you want to be. Remember, progress is more important than perfection, so journal your steps or set reminders to track accomplishments. Don’t hesitate to modify goals if something feels off. Surround yourself with positivity, uplifting friends, and moments of reflection. Start small, stay focused, and have a transformative year.

NOURISH YOUR BEAUTY
Naturally
Foods, supplements, and hydration for glowing skin and hair
Healthy skin and lustrous hair don't happen at the surface. Although skincare routines and scalp products are designed to enhance your exterior, your natural beauty begins on the inside, fueled by proper nourishment. Nourishing your natural beauty starts with learning about the best foods for healthy skin and hair, beauty-boosting supplements, and how hydration can boost your healthy hair and skin. Because it's true that you are what you eat, fueling your body with the right foods makes sense – especially when it comes to supporting your beauty efforts. Hydrating and choosing the right supplements provide plenty of beauty benefits, supporting your glowing skin and lustrous hair. Below is a breakdown of how to nourish your beauty from within for radiant skin and lustrous hair.
Foods
The food you eat plays an important role in supporting your beauty efforts. Nutritious, beauty-boosting foods provide the vitamins and minerals that skin and hair need to thrive. Below is a guide to a few of our favorites.
Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for hair and skin. They also fight inflammation, which can contribute to acne. Omega-3 fatty acids support collagen, structural protein that keeps skin strong and firm. It thickens hair shafts to reduce frizz and enhance shine.
Avocado is a beauty-boosting food that is rich in healthy fats. It also contains vitamin C and antioxidants that support supple skin and sustainable shine. Vitamin C is essential to collagen formation, too, as are the healthy fats from avocado that keep hair silky and shiny.
Supplements
In addition to the beauty-boosting range of foods for skin and hair, the right supplements can support your beauty efforts, too, as they fill in dietary gaps and provide nourishment to support your beauty regime. Collagen is a popular supplement for skin and hair, and deservedly so. It’s an important body compound and the most abundant protein in the skin, which is why it supports a glowing appearance. As we age, collagen production declines, contributing to wrinkles and sagging skin. A collagen supplement can help to boost skin hydration and elasticity while strengthening hair to reduce the risk of breakage.
Biotin, or vitamin B7, is another beauty-boosting supplement often promoted as a hair supplement, but it also helps promote healthy skin. Biotin bolsters hair growth, reduces the risk of hair thinning, and contributes to a natural shine. It has also been found to benefit the skin, as it supports the turnover of cells by helping the body metabolize fats and carbohydrates. The process of recycling skin cells can support a smooth, supple appearance and more glowing skin.
Omega-3 fatty acids, the healthy fats found in highly-regarded organic fatty fish, is often recommended as a supplement for those who aren't likely to get enough from their food. Its anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce the appearance of acne or red, inflamed skin. Omega-3 fatty acids can also help strengthen the hair and reduce the risk of hair breakage while supporting a natural texture.
Hydration
Water is crucial to supporting beauty from the inside out, as it helps to clear toxins from cells and keeps skin supple while reducing the risk of hair brittleness. Drink up — adults should aim for eight glasses of water each day to properly hydrate the skin and hair. Adequate water intake helps to reduce the appearance of dryness and even wrinkles by keeping the cells hydrated. Staying hydrated helps keep the hair supple by reducing frizz and flattening split ends.
Drinking tea can contribute to your daily hydration efforts, including antioxidant-rich green tea, or powerful, caffeine-free options like herbal tea or chamomile. Both types of tea offer antioxidants like polyphenols and flavonoids that support strong, supple skin and reduced wrinkles. Teas are helpful in part because they contain antioxidants such as polyphenols and flavonoids that help support supple skin and reduce wrinkles. Chamomile is also soothing and can calm inflamed skin.
While skincare routines and hair treatments can enhance your appearance, true beauty starts from the inside, with healthy foods and habits that help you nourish your body from within. You can achieve radiant, glowing skin and strong, healthy hair by fueling your body with the right foods, supplements, and hydration. Embrace the power of nourishing your body from within, and let your natural beauty shine.

Tips for Choosing the Best Supplements
1. Look out for science-backed formulas
Look for supplements that harness the power of science so your body can tap into the most cutting-edge research and clinical studies. Brands that research and incorporate the most innovative science are more likely to develop products that contain proven, effective ingredients to give you the highest-quality nutrition available.
2. Focus on bioavailability
Formulas should incorporate bioavailable ingredients to ensure your body absorbs and uses the nutrients in the supplement. Advanced technologies such as liposomal or nano-formulated supplements ensure that your body can absorb and use the nutrients for your greatest benefit.
Winter Hair Care: Stay Glossy
Keep your locks lush this winter with some essential strategies for hair protection and locking in moisture. Deep-condition your hair at least once a week using coconut or argan oil to refresh moisture. Wash your hair with lukewarm water during winter to keep the scalp hydrated, and try to cut down on heat styling. To protect your locks from cold winds, wrap your hair with a cozy hat or scarf and massage your scalp with jojoba or argan oil for extra moisture and strength. Stay glossy this winter!
