A Season to Celebrate Those We Love and Remember and Honor Those Lost

Aswe make our way through spring and into summer, we find ourselves celebrating those important people in our lives, and honoring those who sacrificed their lives for us.

Mother’s Day, always held the second Sunday in May, is May 14 this year, while Father’s Day is June 18, the third Sunday of June. These days are set aside for us all to take the time to truly reflect back on all our parents, or guardians, have done for us—and continue to do. Motherhood and fatherhood can feel like thankless callings at times, but know that your role is so important in your child’s life, and you are raising those who will lead others one day—whether families of their own, a business, a nonprofit. The sky's the limit, and it starts at home.

On Monday, May 29, we honor and remember those who lost their lives serving our nation in order to keep this place we call home a land of the free. Our families, our communities, our nation, will forever be indebted to those men and women who served selflessly for all of humanity.

BRICK, STONE AND CONCRETE

Which is best for your next home update?

Dorothy said it best: “There’s no place like home.” And, while appearance certainly doesn’t make a house a home, it helps when you’re hoping to preserve and build equity in that home. The style, design and materials of a home should be taken into account when updating it. Whether doing a DIY fireplace restoration or resurfacing an exterior accent, it’s all about the finishes.

Natural stone, brick and various forms of concrete have been used as building materials for thousands of years. As a natural element, stone can lower your heart rate and elicit a sense of peace. The symmetrical lines of brickwork are both artistic and grounding. Concrete brings versatility and unique architectural elements while giving spaces a minimalist, urban-industrial vibe.

Materials like brick, stone and concrete are great options to add texture to a dated or dull area when updating your home’s aesthetic. Deciding which material is right for you depends on your home, project and budget. Here’s everything you need to know when choosing which option is best for your home.

Natural Stone

From the Egyptian pyramids to the Roman Colosseum and the Washington Monument, humans have used stone to build durable, elegant structures for centuries. As a building material, stone is fire resistant, long lasting,

by ALLISON POLLOCK-PUGH

and able to withstand nature’s elements. As a natural resource, stone connects us to the earth, while the unique beauty and various colors, shapes and sizes of each stone allow for artistic flexibility.

Including stone in your design can drastically upgrade the look and increase the value of your home. While images of quaint English stone cottages might come to mind, adding stone to a fireplace or as an exterior accent may be a more manageable approach—unless you have the urge to start knocking down walls. Additionally, natural stone is extremely heavy and one of the more expensive choices. For that reason, modern designers, builders and homeowners often opt for stone veneer, which emulates the beauty of natural stone without the high cost.

From covering the entire exterior facade with stone to adding thoughtful stone accents throughout the interior or exterior, there are countless ways to use stone in your home upgrade. Stone columns make a porch entryway a focal point, or adding stone siding on just the lower level of a home with some other accents creates a high-end, cohesive look.

Regardless of which you choose—natural stone or stone veneer—there are a variety of colors, shapes, sizes and textures, all of which will transform the look of your home.

Brick

One of the most popular building materials in US history, even “The 3 Little Pigs” told us brick is a superior building material for homes. Made from combining clay and shale, bricks are extremely durable and resilient to fire and extreme weather conditions. Homes that include bricks provide a feeling of comfort and safety to those within, and the versatile colors and textures allow for unique and detailed architectural designs.

Using brick as a primary structural building material should be considered at the time of construction and completed by a professional brick mason. While bricks tend to be at a lower price point than natural stone, the cost is still quite high. Between the added steps in the brick production process, the heaviness and subsequent transportation difficulty, and the need for professional installation, including brick as

an accent is often a more feasible option. Like stone, a brick veneer is often used for aesthetics rather than structural support. Though not as durable as solid brick, brick veneer is better at keeping moisture away from the exterior wall and tends to last decades longer than traditional siding.

Whether on the exterior of a home or as an interior accent for hearths and fireplaces, brick offers unlimited creativity in addition to increasing your home value. Highlight the details of your home by installing brick on the gable, dormer, and one section of the facade, or build a garden wall around your patio and create a private patio oasis.

Depending on the specifics of your project, you may be limited to either solid brick or stone veneer. Whatever you choose, the design options, visual interest and timeless charm that bricks provide add character to any space.

Brick offers unlimited creativity in addition to increasing your home value.

Concrete

Using concrete as a building material is nothing new; in fact, Thomas Edison designed and built the first concrete homes in 1908. Due to the strength, durability and fire resistance, Edison predicted a boost in homes built with concrete. Over 100 years later, homes constructed with concrete are known to have many benefits, including being more energy-efficient, better at controlling temperature fluctuations, minimizing noise, and economically valuable. Concrete-style homes are also the epitome of modern minimalistic design.

The decision to build an entire house with concrete is one to be made prior to construction, but incorporating concrete in different aspects of your home has increased in popularity.

Homeowners are adding concrete inside their homes, installing accent walls, concrete countertops, and embracing concrete floors.

The do-it-yourself ability of concrete combined with the markedly reduced cost has definitely caused an increase in concrete as a building material. No longer limited to the garage floor, for those who love the sleek, modern-minimalist style, concrete makes a statement both interior and exterior.

When updating your home, it’s important to include features that you love. Seeing the changes in and around your home should make you feel proud and want to click your heels like Dorothy.

2130 Alpha+

"This season has been very successful, on and off the field,” says Grace Hopkins, Bonners Ferry High School senior and member of the 2130 Alpha+ robotics team. Following their 17th season, Hopkins reflects on her team’s growth and success. With support from the school, the community, and dedicated mentors, Alpha+ has endured unique challenges and formed valuable connections.

The 2022-2023 robotics season was a busy one, from planning and workshops to the completion of their robot and embarking on competition season.

“Before the season started, we ran workshops that were open to the community, to teach people about welding, 3-D design, programming, business and machining,” Grace says. “These open houses were very successful in preparing the new, young students on our team for the upcoming season.”

“After the season kickoff on January 7, we had to decide what we wanted the robot to do,” shares Kaylee McCabe, Alpha+ student representative. “This included determining answers to questions like ‘Where should we pick up game pieces from?’ and ‘Where do we want to place game pieces?’”

For this year’s competitions, the students were provided game pieces for their robot to work with: cones and inflatable cubes. The students designed the robot to have an arm with four points of movement, allowing versatility in pickup and placement of the game pieces at all levels.

Game pieces were placed in a grid on the playing field for the robot to navigate. The students designed the robot to use a rotating wrist and claw mechanism to pick up the pieces in any orientation. When not in play, the robot’s arm folded back into itself in order to be completely contained in its frame, Kaylee describes.

18 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL may/june 2023
Between designing, programming and building a functional robot, one of the biggest challenges the team faced was getting the parts they needed.
Robotics students reflect on their experiences and success

“For placing and picking up pieces, we also used a camera called a limelight, which is able to track the reflective tape on the posts of the grid and game pieces during autonomous mode,” Kaylee says. “We tracked the game pieces by having the limelight track a certain color and drive toward that color.”

Between designing, programming and building a functional robot, one of the biggest challenges the team faced was getting the parts they needed, according to Grace. “For companies that all FIRST teams use, these companies have a huge demand and sometimes aren’t able to keep up, so things we need come late, or not at all,” she says.

Even still, for Grace, “the most memorable moments have been the competitions” and the unforgettable connections made.

“This year at the regional competition, we were chosen to be in an alliance with the two teams competing from China. Since leaving the regional competition, we have been able to continue the relationship with these teams through social media,” Grace says. “We got to exchange many items with them, so we can always

remember the alliances and the regional competition experience.”

She adds that the team has “loads of support” from the community, with the majority of its donations and sponsorships coming from local businesses that have been supportive for years.

On April 4, Alpha+ had the opportunity to host the Bonners Ferry Rotary Club at their shop, where the team gave a presentation and demonstrated their robot. “At the end of the lunch, they presented us with a check donation. They have always shown such amazing support,” Grace says.

Alpha+ also uses its Open House event to connect with sponsors. “Our school district is very supportive in allowing us to use space in the middle school,” she says.

Alpha+ now has 13 team members, students in grades eight through 12 (four seniors, one junior, two freshmen and five eighth-grade students).

“Each senior is on a main subteam,” Grace shares. Kaylee leads

design/build, Grace leads business, Thomas Hubbell leads programming, and Zach Callos leads electrical—and each has a responsibility to pass their knowledge on to the younger members.

The younger team members' roles are to learn as much as possible before senior members move on. Fortunately, they are also supported by a strong collection of mentors.

“Our core mentors are Mike Tymrak, Carrick Remaley, Lael Alexander and Joe Reed,” says Grace. “Mike has been on the team since it began, over 17 years ago, as a friend of the team founder, Ed Katz. Carrick got involved in 2007-2008 while working with Ed at the high school. Lael got involved five years ago when her daughter joined the team. And Joe, like Mike, has been with the team since its conception.”

The team saw a lot of success in its earliest years. With a “great group” of students and Katz as their science teacher, the early Alpha+ team went to Worlds competitions five times.

“When the pandemic hit, however, the size of the team also took a hit,” Grace says. Without the chance to compete, new members didn’t see any opportunity in joining the team.

Now, the current team works to advertise, recruit and restore the team from a challenging time. “Our hope is to build the team back up to what it was before COVID, and hopefully compete in Worlds again,” she adds, noting the youngest members currently on the team are “proving to be very promising for the future.”

This summer, Alpha+ will host its annual Robotics Summer Camp, open to upcoming fourth- through sixth-graders. To learn more, the community can keep in touch with Alpha+ through their Facebook page, FIRST Team 2130, and via email at 2130alphaplus@gmail.com.

teacher in the spotlight

KELSEY RICE Third Grade, Valley View Elementary School

Teaching has always been a passion for Kelsey Rice.

Kelsey fondly remembers her childhood when she would convince her cousins and friends to play school with her in her toy classroom. "Of course, I was always the teacher," Kelsey joked. "My stuffed animals and dolls were some of the most intelligent pupils around."

Years later, Kelsey is now in her second year as a third-grade teacher at Valley View Elementary School (VVES), teaching in the same building where her love for school first began.

Despite her love for education, Kelsey did not decide to become a teacher until her own children were already in middle school.

"Throughout their elementary years, I had the opportunity to volunteer in their classrooms and learn from some amazing educators," Kelsey remembered. "I cherished every moment and truly felt like I belonged in a classroom where I could learn alongside and support kids as they grow."

For a while, Kelsey tossed around the idea of going back to school to earn her teaching certificate. Ultimately, with the full, unwavering support of her husband, Andy, and sons, Blake and Brody, Kelsey enrolled in Lewis-Clark State College's (LCSC) Pathways to Accelerated Certificate and Endorsement (PACE) program.

"Throughout my journey in LCSC’s PACE program, my family could not have been more supportive," Kelsey noted. "They

pitched in with household chores so that I could do my schoolwork,” adding, “My son, Blake, found out that smokies, when cooked in the toaster, taste just like they were roasted over a fire.”

In addition to her family, one individual who Kelsey credits as impacting her teaching career is her mentor teacher, Mrs. Shelly Hoisington.

"I appreciate all of her advice regarding content, teaching strategies, and life in general," Kelsey reflected. "She continues to help me expand my teaching skills, and I feel very fortunate to have her as a role model teacher."

Aside from teaching, Kelsey's favorite pastime is cheering on her sons as they compete in cattle shows, rodeos and sporting events. "I am their biggest fan," she excitedly remarked.

Kelsey's teaching journey has offered her a full-circle moment to think back on the memories she made as a child and the life events that have allowed her to be where she is today.

As a child, Kelsey lived in town and attended VVES through second grade. She still thinks about the sunny school days when her mother would pick her up from school, pulling her little brother in his little red wagon.

"The school seemed so much bigger then," Kelsey recalled. "But in reality, it hasn’t changed a bit."

Student in the spotlight

his spring, the Bonners Ferry softball team has only one senior on its roster—Kaylee Sumpter.

Kaylee has played softball each season since her freshman year when the spring sports schedule was cut short due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite that early setback, Kaylee has worked hard to improve her softball skills each year. During the summer, Kaylee plays in an adult softball league alongside her mom, Cindy, who is the head coach of the varsity team this year.

Now in her final season playing first base and catcher for the Badgers, Kaylee has the opportunity to lead a team with two of her younger sisters, Taylor and Kyra, on the roster.

"What I enjoy about softball is having a positive environment but also being competitive," Kaylee explained. "I get to travel while staying active and making memories along the way."

Kaylee credits her parents and grandparents for encouraging her growth as an athlete and a student during her high school career.

"I would say my inspiration would be my parents," Kaylee added. "They push me to my full potential and motivate me."

In addition to softball, Kaylee has played a key role as a post

player for the Bonners Ferry Girls Basketball team.

This past fall, Kaylee also decided to try out for the soccer team, making an impact as a defender for the Badgers team that surprised many people, earning a third-place finish in the competitive 3A Intermountain League.

"This was my first season trying out for soccer, and I wish I had started sooner," Kaylee admitted. "The coach, Ms. [Emily] Winebark, was amazing and helped me throughout the season."

When Kaylee is not playing sports, she also enjoys a wide range of outdoor hobbies like hiking, kayaking, fishing and archery. Throughout high school, Kaylee has worked at the Kootenai River Brewing Company, and in her free time, she likes to hang out with her friends.

Kaylee appreciates all the outdoor activities Bonners Ferry offers and recognizes the value of living in a small town.

"I like that Boundary County is a safe community where everyone knows everyone and people are involved," Kaylee said.

After graduating in June, Kaylee plans to attend Montana State University in the fall, where she has earned an academic scholarship. In the future, she hopes to find opportunities to travel and visit places she has never been before.

Sandpoint-headquartered energy organization sets sights on lofty clean energy goals

With world-class energy experts in leadership positions, a network of subsidiary companies around the world and teams of researchers and scientists developing clean energy solutions, Make a Difference (MAD) Energy finds itself on the bleeding edge of some of the most innovative clean energy technologies in existence today.

In its three years of existence, MAD has raised $100 million in investment funding and created strategic partnerships across the globe, setting in motion the initial phases of the organization's mission to produce "clean, abundant and affordable energy for the world."

Admittedly, many of MAD's ambitions might sound grand and wideranging, but that was the emphasis from the beginning, according to Chief Marketing Officer Christian Fioravanti.

"We love the idea of Sandpoint, Idaho, being the headquarters for a company that is going to impact the world," Christian stated. "The comparison to Elon Musk, Starlink, and some of the big things that he is doing … We believe a company like that—like a SpaceX—can be here in Sandpoint. And that's MAD."

MAD Energy was founded in February 2020 by successful international attorney and businessman George Wentz.

Having operated in the energy sector for more than 40 years and represented some of the world's largest oil and gas companies, George has developed a knack for looking beyond the surface level and

addressing the root challenges humanity faces today regarding energy production and distribution.

Access to energy can impact everything from food production to currency fluctuation. According to a recent study conducted by Our World Data, more than 750 million people still do not have access to electricity today, and 3 billion—or 40 percent of the world's population—have no access to clean fuels for cooking.

For George, Christian and the entire team at MAD, finding solutions that provide abundant and affordable energy to individuals around the globe is at the heart of everything they do.

"We are developing both large infrastructure energy projects while at the same time developing research and development technologies that have the potential to really impact the people of this world in a big way," Christian added.

One of these projects currently being negotiated and set into motion is a MAD subsidiary company called Firebird LNG, which is aiming to plant a liquefied natural gas (LNG) site in the resource-rich GuyanaSuriname Basin.

Working in partnership with the Surinamese government, MAD has received the necessary permits and approvals to begin construction on the 1,500-hectare site that will house one of the first greenfield LNG facilities in the world.

"We are very close to hitting the key milestones to kick off that whole project off and to not only help lift up the people of Suriname and bring them to a first-world status very quickly because of this single project," Christian described, "but we are also going to be aiding Europe, which is in desperate need of natural gas."

Another strategic partnership that MAD sees as a primary fixture in achieving its goals moving forward is with ADACEN, whose CEO, Lt. General Jon M. Davis, is the chair of MAD's Strategic Advisory Board.

ADACEN has an exclusive contract with MAD, making MAD Energy the organization's sole Power Integrator as it begins to roll out a global web of next-generation data center infrastructure.

A third, and possibly the most intriguing, project that MAD is currently working toward is developing a new technology designed to allow for wireless energy transmission based on the ideas of Nikola Tesla.

"MAD Energy is going to be the company that commercializes modern-day Nikola Tesla wireless energy transmission towers," Christian said. "And we are going to be able to bring safe energy and data transmission to the world."

Ultimately, in everything MAD does, the organization's primary goal is to put the power back into the hands of the people. One primary way MAD accomplishes this goal is by funding itself entirely through retail and accredited investors.

"Not only is MAD funded by the people—because we wanted to bring the people in to [reap] the reward that comes from this [instead of] big oil companies or Wall Street," Christian said, "but we also plan to allow for investments into our subsidiary companies as well, by both retail and accredited investors."

As MAD continues expanding and furthering its global clean energy projects, the organization hopes to encourage prosperity in North Idaho, North Africa and everywhere in between.

"Something very special is being done here [at MAD]," Christian noted. "And it is the coolest thing ever, to me, that it's headquartered in Sandpoint, Idaho, because I look forward to seeing some of those external benefits supporting this area because of the success of this company.”

CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A HOUSE

by ALLISON POLLOCK-PUGH

Freedom and prosperity have been foundational components of the American Dream for generations, and to many, owning a home is an important milestone in achieving that dream. The feeling of having a piece of land that is yours, four walls, and a roof to hold and protect your family is unparalleled. Reaching the goal of homeownership provides stability and connections to the community and builds financial wealth over time. It’s also one of the most significant investments you’ll make in your lifetime—both in your future and financially.

You want to choose a home that meets the needs of your current lifestyle, stage of life, and any future goals you have for yourself and your family. And the journey to and the process of buying a house is unique for each buyer. A growing family has different needs than an empty nester looking to downsize. A single parent desires vastly different features than a new retiree.

Whether you’re a first-time home buyer or a seasoned veteran, the process can be overwhelming. One of the best first steps is finding an experienced Realtor—they have the training and knowledge to walk you through the process, give you the ins and outs of the neighborhood, and get down to the nitty-gritty details to help you make an informed decision. For this reason, Gig Harbor managing broker and Realtor Jennifer Hawkins of Hawkins-Poe key2see Team, real estate broker Jackie Suarez of Century 21 RiverStone and Realtor Ben Geanetta of Elite Realty Partners, both based in North Idaho, provided professional insight to help clear up the sometimes muddy process of purchasing a house.

Most people considering buying a home have imagined their “perfect” house. For some, it’s a brick house with a white picket fence, while others crave a low-maintenance condo in the city—either way, it’s likely you have more non-negotiables than you initially realize. As potential buyers start viewing homes, they can quickly get distracted by the beautiful countertops and professionally staged presentation. Relying on an imagined picture in your head can lead to overlooking must-have features. There’s nothing worse than falling in love with a house only to remember later that you swore you’d never share a closet with your spouse again.

OPEN

Make a list. Have each person involved in buying the home and who will be living in the home make a list of the features they most want and things they truly need. Then you can review the list—maybe drop the wall-towall trampoline room requested by your 7-year-old—and rank the features by importance. Doing this will help narrow down properties during your search and keep you focused as you visit potential properties.

“Location, location, location” is a common phrase in real estate. Besides being in an area where you want to live, the location is also directly linked to the current and future home value. The features that determine what constitutes a good location differ for each home buyer, but there are some generally accepted objective factors to consider. The location determines which schools your children will attend, how long your commute to work will be, and which community you will be involved with daily. “Do your homework and work with an agent who is an expert in your target area,” recommends Jackie.

Researching an area and working with a knowledgeable Realtor also helps when evaluating neighborhoods. Take a walk in the neighborhood and talk to people who live there. This will help you get a feel for the mood of a neighborhood but can also provide invaluable insight into real-time issues or benefits of the neighborhood.

KNOW YOUR BUDGET ANDT

Another factor to consider are the future plans for the area. New construction neighborhoods are popping up all over—depending on your needs, you may want to hold out for one of the new builds, or you might not want to buy right next to a future construction site. You should also consider the crime in the area, if there are any benefits such as recreation facilities, and if there are HOA dues that will affect your monthly payment.

Remember, your location also includes the lot on which the home stands. You can remodel and renovate a house to your every specification, but the lot will remain the same. Consider the lot location and size carefully when viewing homes. Does it get enough sunlight? Will the driveway be difficult to navigate when it snows? Is the yard large enough for your kids and dog to run around? Are you prepared for the amount of maintenance needed for this size yard? If anything about the location or the lot seems concerning or feels like a compromise to you, don’t hesitate to walk away. It will be easier to find another property in a better location or lot than to live with frustrations that could’ve been avoided.

Know your budget and the market. While this sounds simple enough, it can be a complex process. You need a clear picture of your finances to determine a down payment amount and the maximum mortgage payment you can afford. Your real estate team can help review various mortgage payment scenarios and point out sleeper costs, including HOA dues, homeowner’s insurance, and property taxes. “Home buyers need to have all their documents in order

and hire a solid team to help them purchase a home. This team will consist of a local, full-time real estate professional, a full-time knowledgeable lender, and expert local vendors,” explains Ben.

The market, interest rates and inventory have been rapidly changing over the past few years, but real estate is cyclical. Depending on your circumstances, now might be a great time for you to buy, but not ideal for others. As Jennifer explains, “This market is healthy, but rates are high. … If you have substantial equity in your home, now is a great time to buy, and there are a lot of options available that you wouldn’t be able to capitalize on when the market is hot.”

Moves That Matter

“Welive in North Idaho, and our local communities help to support our families, so it’s natural and easy for us wanting to give back,” shares Ben Geanetta, who along with friend Sean Cramer recently created a program that gives back to local communities in North Idaho.

Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Ben and his wife Jessica made the move to North Idaho in 2018, as they wanted to be in a small town to raise their children. He worked for a few real estate companies in Sandpoint before co-founding Elite Realty Partners with Scott Cunningham in 2022. Their mission is to deliver exceptional services, where the clients’ needs, expectations and preferences come first, and ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Sean moved to North Idaho in March of 2022 from Washington state, drawn to the area for many reasons, though primarily to be closer to family. “My wife Ashley and I were looking at where we would choose to raise our boys, and North Idaho checked our whole wish list,” he says. The move also brought them closer to Sean’s parents, who live in Sagle, and his brother’s family, who reside in the Selle Valley.

Sean has more than a decade of experience in mortgage lending specifically and today is the VP Northwest Regional Manager of Highlands Residential Mortgage, a direct-to-agency lender committed to offering a wide array of competitive loan programs coupled with world-class service.

Sean and Ben were introduced to each other through fellow Realtor Whitney Pappas, who helped Sean with the purchase

of his own home in the area. “Sean and I share a lot of the same values and vision,” Ben affirms. “One day, during one of our conversations, we ventured into our desire in giving back to our communities.”

In January of this year, Ben and Sean launched “Moves That Matter.” The basis of the program is simple: When a client closes escrow with Ben and/or Sean, they have the client pick a charity, and a $200 donation from each vendor involved is made on the client’s behalf.

Planning is underway to host their first—of what they hope to be many—community event. The evening will include a dinner and auction, with proceeds going to benefit area organizations and nonprofits. They are currently seeking gift basket donations and items from area businesses.

As of print time, date and location had not yet been determined, though it will be at a business in Sandpoint. Tickets will go on sale prior to the event and can be purchased by contacting Sean or Ben.

“During the dinner, the attendees will vote on where the proceeds from dinner and the gift baskets will go,” according to Ben. “The organization with the most votes will get 50 percent of the proceeds, second will get 30 percent and third will receive 20 percent.”

For those interested in learning more about Moves That Matter and their upcoming event, Ben and Sean invite you to reach out to them today.

ADVENTURE, REST and RELAXATION awaits

Plan a peaceful staycation right here in Bonners Ferry

After spending many years living in the Hawaiian Islands, where they operated a successful real estate brokerage (Love Hawaii Realty) and vacation rental management business (Love Hawaii Villas, specializing in luxury beachfront condos), Munro and Rachel Murdock were eager to be closer to family, to experience the immense natural beauty of North Idaho and its four seasons, and simplify their lives. They purchased a home in Bonners Ferry in 2020 and moved their family to the area the following summer.

Once they had settled in, Munro and Rachel began exploring possible business and investment opportunities. “It was important to us to invest close to home and to focus on doing something that would contribute to the local economy and create job opportunities for Boundary County residents,” affirms Munro.

After meeting the owners of the Log Inn Bonners Ferry, and learning of their interest in selling the luxury log cabins and RV sites side of their business, the Murdocks decided to pursue the opportunity further. They completed the business acquisition in November of last year and rebranded as North Haven Campground.

“This particular business presented us with a great opportunity to do something we already had experience in, while also enabling us to branch out into new areas of business that we had not considered before,” says Rachel.

Nestled in a beautiful wooded setting just 2 1⁄2 miles north of Bonners Ferry, North Haven Campground is a peaceful, family friendly destination. Open year-round, guest accommodation options include five luxury log cabins (one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans), 21 RV sites, two Conestoga glamping wagons with private bathrooms, and a large log cabin-style bath house with pristine private restrooms, showers and modern laundry facilities. In addition, guests will have access to high-speed fiber optic wireless internet, the on-site camp store and a fun ¾-mile nature walking trail loop. And there are pet-friendly cabins available as well, so your furry family member can enjoy the adventure, too.

The couple acknowledges the many wonderful accommodations businesses that can be found throughout Bonners Ferry and North Idaho and realize that each business is unique and provides a customized experience for visitors from all over the county—and world. “At North Haven, we are able to provide a variety of accommodations options for travelers between our luxury log cabins, RV sites and our new Conestoga glamping wagons. We are also planning to introduce other fun glamping sites in the campground, such as tipis and glamping tents, so that there will be something for everyone,” says Munro. “For us, it is about helping all of our guests create experiences that are fun and memorable, and to have a comfortable—and even luxurious— experience while spending time at North Haven Campground.”

As they embark on this new adventure, Munro and Rachel strive to surpass the expectations of their guests. “Our business philosophy is based on the commitment to always be improving and finding ways to make things better and to improve the guest experience,” Munro shares. “We are also committed to making our business a fun and rewarding place to work for our team members. We’ve had many great mentors and examples over the years who have inspired us in life and business, including some of our close family members who are successful entrepreneurs.”

The Murdocks have felt the aloha spirit from the people of Boundary County and have “great admiration for the industriousness, work ethic and respect for God, country and the community that is so prevalently represented by those we have come to know and meet throughout North Idaho,” the Murdocks note. “Boundary County has a wonderful business community as well, with such a diverse mix of businesses and striving entrepreneurs. We love that and hope to be able to make a lasting and positive contribution to the local business community as well.”

Munro and Rachel look forward to actively supporting local education, Boundary County law enforcement and first responders, adding, “We welcome opportunities to serve, to support and to be involved in ways that can help to benefit the community around us.”

The Murdocks invite the community to join them at the campground from 11am to 4pm on May 20 for their official Grand Opening and Open House celebration, where they will be offering free Hawaiian shave ice, tours of the campground, log cabins and wagon glamping sites, and visitors can enter to win a free stay in one of the cabins or wagons! More details will be released as the event date approaches. Those interested in scheduling a private tour of the facility are welcome to reach out.

If you are looking for some adventure and relaxation, book a cabin, RV site or glamping wagon today! Reservations to North Haven Campground can be made online at NorthHavenCampground.com or by calling 208.603.9212.

Summer 2023 Summer 2023

Summer is a time for fun, sun and relaxation, but for parents, it can also be a stressful time trying to keep kids entertained and engaged while school is out. Prepping for summer activities ahead of time can help alleviate some of that stress and ensure that your kids have a summer filled with fun and meaningful experiences.

One of the first steps in prepping for summer activities is to determine what your child is interested in and what they want to do during the summer months. Having a conversation with your child about their interests and ideas can help you choose the right activities or programs to keep them engaged throughout the summer.

Summer camps can be a great option for kids of all ages and interests. There are a variety of camps available, from traditional day and overnight camps to specialized camps focused on specific activities like sports, arts or technology. Many of these camps also offer specialized programs for children with special needs or those looking for a unique experience, like wilderness camps or adventure camps. If your child is interested in sports, there are a variety of summer programs available that can help them improve their skills and stay active. Many local sports leagues offer summer camps and clinics for kids of all ages and skill levels. There are also specialized sports camps that focus on specific sports like soccer, basketball or gymnastics.

Arts and cultural programs can also be a great way to keep kids engaged and learning during the summer months. Many museums, theaters and community centers offer summer classes and programs for children interested in music, dance, theater or visual arts. These programs can help children develop new skills and explore their creativity while having fun.

Once you have an idea of what your child is interested in, it’s important to start researching and registering for programs as early as possible. Many popular programs fill up quickly, so it’s important to start the registration process early to ensure your child gets a spot. Many programs also offer early bird discounts for families that register early, so it can be a great way to save money as well.

In addition to traditional summer programs, there are also a variety of other activities and experiences that you can plan for your child during the summer months. Family vacations, day trips to local attractions, and outdoor adventures can all be great ways to create lasting memories and keep kids engaged and excited throughout the summer.

To make the most of the summer, involve your child in the planning process. Create a summer bucket list together, and let your child choose activities that they would like to do. This can be anything from trying a new food to learning a new skill. Use the bucket list as a guide for planning summer activities and checking off items throughout the summer.

Before your child starts any summer program or activity, make sure they have everything they need to be prepared. This includes any necessary equipment, clothing and supplies, as well as any required medical or consent forms. Check the program requirements and ensure that your child has everything they need before the program begins.

If your child has any medical conditions or requires special accommodations, it’s important to discuss these with the program staff ahead of time to ensure that your child’s needs can be met. This may include providing medication

Preparing for summer activities also includes ensuring that your child is emotionally ready for the experience. Starting a new program or activity can be exciting but also nervewracking for children. Talk to your child about their feelings and help them prepare for any challenges or new experiences they may face. Encourage them to try new things, but also let them know that it’s okay to feel nervous or uncertain.

In conclusion, prepping for summer activities for kids can be an enjoyable experience for both parents and children. By taking the time to research and plan ahead, parents can ensure that their children have a fun and meaningful summer filled with a variety of activities and experiences. Shining a Light on the Importance of Mental Health Care in Our Community

With Heather (Sunshine) Bartlett, PMHNP, you can find the care and support you need to overcome mental health challenges

Mental health is a crucial aspect of our overall wellbeing. It affects how we think, feel and behave, and can significantly impact our ability to function in our daily lives. Mental health issues are much more prevalent than most realize. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives.

Individuals suffering from mental health issues may feel overwhelmed, hopeless and alone, leading to decreased quality of life, reduced productivity and work performance, increased risk of physical health problems, problems with substance use, strained relationships, or self-harm. The effects are not limited to the individual. Unaddressed mental health issues have a ripple effect on society, affecting families, communities, and the economy. Unfortunately, mental health issues are still stigmatized in our society, and many people do not seek the help they need due to fear of judgment or lack of access to care. However, the importance of mental health in our society cannot be overstated.

It is essential to understand that mental health issues can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender or background. It is not a weakness or something to be ashamed of; it is a part of the human experience that requires attention and care.

Access to mental health care providers can be difficult, especially in rural areas like Boundary County. Many individuals in these areas face long wait lists, high costs, and limited availability of mental health providers. This can lead to untreated mental health issues and a decreased quality of life for those in need. However, Boundary Community Clinics (BCC) is committed to providing the care our community needs and is proud to announce that Heather (Sunshine) Bartlett, PMHNP, a highly trained psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, will be joining BCC. She is passionate

about helping individuals achieve positive mental health and lead fulfilling lives. By providing accessible and affordable mental health care, BCC is positively impacting our community's mental health and well-being.

As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, Sunshine can help to provide guidance in diagnosis and medication options to optimize your mental health. Sunshine works in conjunction with your therapist to provide you with the support you need to thrive. She understands mental health’s impact on individuals and society. Her approach to mental health care is holistic, focusing on the person as a whole and addressing the root causes of mental health issues, not just the symptoms. By providing support and care for individuals who have experienced trauma, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, or chemical dependency, Sunshine is able to help people improve their quality of life by balancing lifestyle changes with appropriate medication(s) as needed.

If you, or a loved one, is struggling with mental health issues, it's important to know that help is available. Heather (Sunshine) Bartlett, PMHNP, is a compassionate and experienced mental health provider, and you can request a referral from your primary care provider to access her care. Sunshine works with patients aged 6 and older and offers a range of services to address various mental health concerns.

For more information about her practice and services, contact Boundary Community Clinics at 208.267.3655. Remember, seeking help for mental health issues is a sign of strength, and with the right support, individuals can overcome their challenges and achieve good mental health.

ith a passion for bringing people together to share in a love for classic cars, the Rod Benders Car Club was formed in 1999. For well over two decades, this classic car club continues to host monthly meet-ups, events, cruises, car shows and more.

WSAT 18 MARCH

Each year, as spring begins to transition to summer, the community eagerly awaits the Rod Bender’s Border 3 Jamboree. Always held the first Saturday of June, this year’s car show is set for June 3 and is sure to draw participants and attendees from near and far.

2023 marks the 23rd year of the Border 3 Jamboree car show. Each year, they see between 150 to 200 participants (from Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Canada) showing off their classic vehicles for the community to enjoy, as well as the chance to be recognized during the award ceremony. “Most owners who have restored their cars are very happy to talk about how they have restored them,” shares Kat Cowell, event leader.

In addition to the cars, there will be food vendors and shopping opportunities, a limbo and hula hooping contest, as well as additional activities for the kids. And this year, there's even more to be excited about, as the event will also include the Loud Pipes Contest—a chance to showcase your vehicle's thunderous roar and compete for the title of loudest pipes in the show. “We had someone who was willing to take it on and lead it,” says Kat. “We think the car community will enjoy it.”

Gather your family and friends to celebrate history and community with beautiful classic cars on June 3. Rain or shine, it’s sure to be a blast.

“We are a nonprofit club,” reminds Kat. “Every donation we receive and all profits from the car show go back into the community to support Distinguished Young Women, BoCo Backpacks, 4-H and more, or to put on the car show again!”

Registration to participate in the car show kicks off at 8am the morning of the event in the parking lot by Woody’s Pawn Shop and closes at 11am. Then the judging will begin, culminating with the awards ceremony beginning at around 2pm, with the day’s festivities concluding between 3 and 4pm.

The Rod Benders Car Club, which currently has around 20 members, is actively seeking new members to join. Those interested in joining can do so by attending their meetings every Wednesday at 5:30pm at the Chic-N-Chop. Membership is just $25 annually for a couple. Once you join, there is no obligation to do anything! “We welcome young and old, and you don’t have to have an old car to join,” affirms Kat, adding you just have to love cars and want the club to continue.
