Nothing says “home” like aging in your own home. Obtaining the services needed to do this is the key to “aging better” and safely at home. Our knowledgeable caregivers provide services that disabled children, disabled adults and the elderly need to continue to stay independently and safely in their own homes. Home care services are often the answer families have been looking for to keep loved ones at home rather than placing them in nursing homes. AAging Better has been serving the Greater Sandpoint area communities with local well-trained and compassionate caregivers for the past 14 years. We’re here to assist those needed in-home care now or in the future. Business SPOTLIGHT Yoder’s Grocery Store Opens at New Location By Brandon Newsom and Desi Minor
W
ednesday, January 15, Yoder’s Grocery held the grand opening of their new store in the former Boundary Electric building. They made cookies and other goodies to show their appreciation to all the people who have helped them through this process.
Bonners Ferry Living student staff members sat down and talked with Henry Yoder about his new accomplishment and how he got to where he is today. Yoder was honored that Bonners Ferry Living gave him this opportunity to share his successes. He enjoys working with young people. BFL: So why did you open up the store in the first place? Henry: I understand that there are some struggling people out there and I want to help them. We knew that people were struggling financially. When people come into our store I want them to feel welcome. I enjoy mingling with all our customers, and we made this store for not just people who need the help but for everyone. Our vision is bigger than the original store was. BFL: How is moving in coming along? Henry: It’s going great! When people heard we were going to be moving stores we had a lot of volunteers that wanted to help move us in. We planned for our store to be closed for five days. But with all the help from the community, we were closed for only two days. We have a lot of support locally, people are really putting their hearts into this, and that’s what keeps us going. BFL: Is there anything you would like to add? Henry: We just want thank everybody for all their support, because it’s really about the people and not about the store. BFL: We wish you all the best on the grand opening. The student staff of Bonners Ferry Living appreciate all the time Henry took to sit down and talk with them.

9B Snow Club Parents, Teachers, And Students Enjoy Outings To Schweitzer Mountain By Paul Bonnell | Reporting by Chad Guthrie, J.P. Swingle, and Dominic Tobin | Photos by Lyndsay Hart
T
wenty-seven skiers and snowboarders from Boundary County convened at Schweitzer Mountain Resort on a Friday in early January for the first 9B Snow Club outing of the winter. The group included parents, teachers and students of all ages. For some, it was their first outing ever, a day of learning to slide on snow. For others, experienced “rippers,” it was another quality powder day. All had a good time--camaraderie, exercise, and learning. The club works in conjunction with the Schweitzer Snow School/Ski and Ride Center to get young people learning to ski and snowboard better. Participants receive a significant discount on their lift tickets and also have an hour group lesson with Schweitzer’s instructors. On this Friday, one of the instructors was a former Bonners Ferry High School student, Noah Price, who is now studying outdoor leadership at North Idaho College. It was a “full circle” moment as he helped youngsters from the 9B Snow Club improve their skills. Mt. Hall first-grade teacher Lyndsay Hart and BFHS English teacher Aaron Hanson organized the club outing, enlisting the help of fellow teachers, parents, and students. Both are outdoor enthusiasts themselves and love to see others enjoying the outdoors. Hart has worked in wilderness programs and thrives on trail running, snowboarding, and hiking. Hanson climbs rocks and ice and enjoys

backcountry skiing in his leisure time, activities he discovered during his youth in Boundary County and which he has pursued throughout the world. BFHS senior Robert Swanson and junior Dominic Tobin collaborated on the t-shirt design for the club, with Swanson contributing artistic ideas and Tobin wielding technical expertise in Adobe Photoshop. They were able to use the project for their high school media literacy course. Said Tobin, “We wanted a skier and a snowboarder. We went for something simple--minimalist and efficient, yet effective.” On the mountain reports were glowing and positive. Swanson reflected, “I could really see the improvement in myself from when I first started in fourth grade. I’m glad for the opportunity to keep going.” 2008 BFHS grad and BFHS U.S. History teacher Tyler Warner noted, “It was a great time getting students into the outdoors. I was re-discovering old joys.” Sophomore Morgan Bell said, “It was such a beautiful day up there. It was worth every penny.” Perhaps the best summation of the day was made by Mt. Hall first-grader Riley Thompson who quipped, “I had so much fun, I wish I could ski in the summer.” With at least two more trips scheduled for Fridays this winter, the members of the 9B Snow Club will have more opportunities for the joys of sliding on snow.

onners Ferry High School senior Aubrey Tucker took advantage of a unique opportunity to participate with the Universal Cheerleaders’ Association in the London New Year’s Day Parade. Tucker has been involved with cheerleading since she was a little girl. Last summer, at a UCA camp in Cheney, WA, she won a competition that gave her the chance to travel to London to dance. Tucker was thrilled. “My older sister has traveled a lot. It’s something I have always enjoyed and wanted to do too.”
“I really liked the parade--the dancing, the cheering. It was inspiring to be part of it. The world is a diverse place. I am glad I got to see more of it, and that I got this opportunity. If I could, I’d go back today.” The experience has helped propel Tucker’s future plans. She would like the option to pursue cheer in college or further her involvement in UCA. Her story exemplifies one of the familiar Badger cheers, “Stand up for Badger pride . . . Stand up for Badger pride.”
Tucker traveled to London alone. She had to learn a new dance. She met people from all over the world and described the experience as simultaneously challenging and exciting.

Keep your family on track and incorporate a few simple rules for healthy living into your busy lives.
Moving From Obligation To Inspiration Transform Discipline Into Freedom, Struggle Into Grace, And Willpower Into Passion By Lisa Paull, Certified Personal Trainer, FAST Program Director at PneuThera

QUICK TIP
014 is here! A time for renewal, an opportunity to change for the better, a chance to make promises towards your future. You say you want to eat better, exercise more, become more fit and healthy? Now’s the time! On how many New Year’s occasions have you promised yourself and made resolutions that you have not followed through on? How can you make this year different? How can you maintain the
motivation to be successful? No matter what activity we are participating in, success lies in the discipline it takes to maintain through the obstacles that life throws at us. Either out of perceived need or finding enjoyment in an activity, we are able to overcome those obstacles and stay true to our task. External motivators, “I should exercise…I should eat right” are a common point of entry into fitness and nutrition. They
may be enough to get you started, but feeling obligated lacks sustainability and is often frustrating. It is the motivational style employed by most dieters, hence the reason 95% of them fail. Chasing the carrot on the stick takes much effort and discipline, and the promise of reward in the future may not be enough to keep you on track. Moving from “I should get in shape” to “I want to be fit” is the way out of the endless

cycle of obligation. True desire to make a change enables you to set strongly defined visions and goals that will assist you in your process. You will fill your tool box with strategies to help you stay with your commitments longer and work towards the win in your future.
will train and eat well because that is how you approach life. Although they will happen, a day without exercise is uncomfortable. It is easy to avoid the foods your body rejects. You have reached the Zone of Inspiration!
What do you love doing so much that you become lost in the activity itself? Internal motivators of enjoyment, “I love to”, are powerful and selfgenerated. When we are rewarded from the activity itself, we no longer feel outside pressure to perform and it is easier to maintain. We will triumph even in the face of great obstacles, finding a way to get the job done no matter what. True success comes from mastery, when an activity ceases to be something you do and becomes a way of life. The motivator “I am inspired, just try and stop me” prevails. You
Wherever you currently fit on this motivation scale, assess yourself and look at what you can do to move to the next stage. Find your passion in healthy ways to make your resolutions come true. Set small goals and find strength in the support systems that surround you. Be patient, committed, and persistent. Transform discipline into freedom, struggle into grace, and willpower into passion. Lisa Paull is a Certified Personal Trainer and is the Program Director at FAST, located at PneuThera on North Boyer in Sandpoint.

Find The Right Balance For Your Life By: Bruce Weaver, MPA, PA-C, President & CEO, AAging Better In-Home Care
L
ife sometimes seems to change in the blink of an eye. Recently, a family called our company seeking information about getting a caregiver for their elderly mother who had just fallen again and was no longer able to take care of herself or maintain her house. She was insistent that she live in her own house rather than go to a nursing home. However, according to the daughter, the mother had no resources to pay privately for in-home services and had never considered getting long-term care insurance. Because the daughter and her two brothers were raising their own children, they were unable to contribute anything toward the cost of their mother’s care at home. Fortunately for this family, the mother qualified for Idaho’s Medicaid program because she had very few financial assets and was over the age of 65. We assisted her in getting in contact with the local Medicaid office and the approval process took somewhat less time than was typical for many Medicaid applicants. She chose our agency to provide her “personal care services,” which allowed our caregivers to assist her with bathing, getting dressed each day, cooking her meals, doing her laundry and cleaning her home. Not all families are so fortunate. Many individuals have too many financial resources to qualify for the Idaho Medicaid program. And contrary to popular assumptions, Medicare does not pay for the type of in-home care that allows the frail elderly or the disabled to stay in their own homes. Medicare, as a federally funded program, is most often limited to those discharged from the hospital with doctor’s orders for “home health” services. Unlike home care services, home health does not include chore work (that is, house cleaning, laundry,
Boundary PERSONAL CARE
shopping for groceries, cooking meals, assistance with eating, etc.,) and home health services are time-limited. In contrast, individuals that qualify for Medicaid can receive these home care services as long as necessary. Few individuals or families give much thought to what they will do when they or their loved ones become too frail to take care of themselves or their homes. It’s not until they’ve reached the point where the seniors fall and injure themselves, become ill or begin to let themselves or their homes go that many people finally react and begin looking at options for care. In each case, seniors and their family members should start planning now for the time when they or their loved ones are no longer able to accomplish the activities of daily living and need additional help to stay at home safely. If you or a loved one is at the point where assistance might be needed, AAging Better can provide caregivers up to seven days a week for in-home care services. We would be happy to provide a free in-home assessment or furnish information on options for paying for in-home care. Call us at one of our local numbers or toll free at 866.464.2344 for further information. See us online at www.aagingbetter.com.

n the 1960’s and 1970’s the fish of the Great Lakes started washing up on shore with diseases and tumors. The birds that ate those fish became sick, their eggs were brittle and no offspring were produced. Both biologists and environmentalists became very concerned about the extinction of both species. How many of you think any biologist would come to the conclusion that the problem was due to the genes of these animals? How many of you believe the illnesses, cancers, and diseases they had were due to “bad genes?” How many of you think any biologist’s logical solution was to dump drugs and chemotherapy into the lakes, or set up tiny bird and fish hospitals with tiny bird and fish instruments to perform surgery and radiate them when they washed up on shore? Clearly none of this would seem logical, they would look to the environment of the fish and birds and fix it, which is exactly what they did. We must ask ourselves a very difficult paradigm shifting question. Why would this same approach or explanation seem logical for the human species (human animal)? It is absurd that we would blame genes for illness
One of the biggest reasons we don’t ask the questions is it’s very uncomfortable to ask or talk about. Sickness is a tragedy, and it becomes difficult to discuss responsibility, it is mistaken for blame. However, it is not blame, it is empowerment to prevent future illness, disease, and tragedy. Although it may be uncomfortable to ask, its more uncomfortable not to (moral compass). Our genes have remained virtually unchanged for thousands of years, yet the rates of which chronic disease are increasing are exponential (especially the past 100 years). One argument is that we are living longer. How is that possible when the greatest increase in diseases today is in our children and younger populations? No other mammalian species comes anywhere close to the heart disease, obesity, cancer, diabetes, acid reflux, anxiety, depression, infertility, anger, resentment, and lack of community that we do. We have been fooled into considering a human is not an animal, and now believe we don’t have to abide by the same biological laws all animals do. Ask yourself when has any animal been put in captivity and become healthier? To some it might terrify or anger you, perhaps a feeling of guilt. Guilt will not serve you, and the truth as always can
set you free. If someone was suffering from an impacted wisdom tooth, who would rush in to the dentist and ask to be stuck with cortisone or have it pulled out? I would venture to suggest most would ask to have it removed and fix the cause. I firmly believe everyone wants to express health and vitality and avoid sickness and disease. Too often people shrink their lives to fit their physical capabilities and create a ceiling. Disease is extremely complex with so many contributing factors of bioaccumulation that no one factor causes one disease (do all smokers get lung cancer?). However health is quite simple if we only learn what TRUE health is and how we must achieve it. Are we making food choices based on how they make us feel, or how we feel afterwards? How many times have you every regretted eating an apple or going for a walk. Are you concerned about living a better moment or a better life? I hope this has provoked thought; it’s a seed of hope. We look forward to working with you and watching that seed grow. If you want to learn how, call us and remember most importantly the quality of your choices determines the quality of your life.

or those who have ever attempted to quit using tobacco, they know what a challenge it can be. Fortunately for those in North Idaho, there is help available to assist people through that journey.
Ryan Bliss and Lindsey Johnson-Bliss opened Vapor Depot in January 2009. Their mission was to help those who smoke or chew tobacco improve their quality of life. Even after witnessing grandparents die from the effects of emphysema, both Ryan and Lindsey continued to smoke. Only after trying the electronic cigarette were they both able to quit smoking once and for all.

Their failed methods of smoking cessation included the patch, gum, lozenges, inhalers, hypnosis and acupuncture. “We later learned that all of these FDA approved smoking cessation products and practices collectively only gave a 3% success rate,” said Ryan. The Vapor Depot was one of the first electronic cigarette retailers to operate in the United States and offers the best in electronic cigarettes and health products in the world, backing their products with a Limited Lifetime Warranty. Ryan says the company, which has an online presence for those who do not live locally, offers a customer loyalty program and referral rewards program. According to Ryan the strong relationship he has with the factories that produce the products he sells allows Vapor Depot to offer the Limited Lifetime Warranty on their products, something many other companies do not. “We have a founding experience in the industry that provides us with the expertise and knowledge necessary to provide our customers with a peace of mind that similar companies cannot compare to,” said Ryan.

But Ryan and Lindsey’s dedication to the product they sell goes far beyond maintaining high quality. The company has been pivotal in the protection of electronic cigarettes from over taxation or possible embargo in the United States. In early 2013, driven by increased customer demand, Vapor Depot relocated their retail space to a larger venue inside the Bonner Mall in the location formerly occupied by GNC. The store is exquisite with Italian leather couches, multiple flat screen televisions as well as a 10 foot projection screen. There are also gourmet teas, coffees, cappuccinos and espressos from which to choose. Ryan and Lindsey live in Laclede where they and their three boys, who range in age from 2 1/2 years old to 21 years old, enjoy swimming, fishing, boating, jet skiing, and horseback riding. During the winter months the entire family enjoys snow skiing and boarding. Since opening just over five years ago, Vapor Depot has integrated itself into the community, supporting many local causes including Relay for Life, Ducks Unlimited, Scootin’ Sisters Benefit Ride, Toys for Tots as well as many local sports team. While many factors have attributed to their success, Ryan said in the end it is their customers who have helped them succeed in an industry that has changed and saved the lives of many. Referring to his customers, he said “Without them we would be nothing.”
