Dig Pink Tournament By Desirae Minor and Paul Bonnell

T

he Bonners Ferry High School Lady Badgers volleyball team recently hosted the Dig Pink game with Timberlake. Proceeds from the sale of tickets, 50-50 raffles, and t-shirts help support breast cancer services and charities. Additionally, it raises awareness and provides the team with a valuable opportunity to increase team spirit and contribute to the community. The Dig Pink event starts out well before the actual game. Team members work on posters, a ribbon awareness drive, a

sponsorship drive, and a team dinner. The girls are encouraged to dedicate their play to a breast cancer survivor or victim. This provides the girls with a sense of appreciation and perspective. Senior McKenzie MacDonald said, “It’s stressful to put on, but it’s rewarding, especially when you play in honor of someone.” One celebrated aspect of the event is when the varsity team gets together and makes cookies and cupcakes for the silent auction. Both the Badgers and their opponents wear pink during the game as a way of raising awareness and honoring others. Coaches and athletes value Dig Pink as a time when businesses really show their support for the school. Attendance at the event was impressive. As one senior noted, “People really take this event seriously—wearing pink, wearing ribbons, showing up and supporting, just being there.” Said Camille Awbrey, “We had an outpouring of community and student support. As a senior, this was a splendid way to finish up. I was so glad to be part of it.”

sk Bonners Ferry High School head girls’ volleyball coach Caroline Watson what she enjoys most about her job, and she will tell you it is seeing the progress the players make over the course of the season. “It is so cool to see an enthusiastic player that is new the game improve as a player and learn how fun the game can be at a higher level,” said Watson who has coached both boys and girls high school volleyball as well as club teams in both Idaho and California. Now in her tenth year as a coach, Watson has been impressed with the season thus far. “We have beaten the majority of teams in our league and have finished in the top half of all of our tournaments,” she said. When asked what the biggest asset is to this year’s team, Watson said it was the players themselves. “We have an athletic bunch that works hard,” she said. “This combination allows them as a team to improve their game faster than normal throughout the season.” She feels the biggest weakness that faces her team is the inconsistency that seems

to happen with attendance at practices. Because of various reasons, there are usually one or two different players absent from each practice. This, she said, makes it difficult for the athletes to build the chemistry among the team to its highest potential and can cause unnecessary hesitation during the matches. But that aside the team is doing very well. The best piece of advice she can offer her players is this: “Be patient and don’t give up when learning the game. Becoming a good volleyball player - skilled and confident takes way more time and repetitions than most people believe. But once accomplished, it is not only fun, but the best feeling knowing you can play at that level.”

BFHS Girls’ Soccer 2013 Coach Interview & Team Update By Paul Bonnell | Reporting by Steffen Robles

A Visit with Erin Delude BFHS Girls’ Soccer Coach Intimidating on the field, Coach Erin Delude is the girls’ soccer coach and a teacher at Bonners Ferry High School. demands of work and her relationships. She still competes in soccer. She played in soccer tournaments in Washington last year and raced in two trail ultra marathons. She pours herself energetically into these pursuits and has this advice for her team: “Give the best of what you have.”

Badger Girls Soccer Update

Delude comes from a background of playing and coaching soccer. She played competitively at Minnesota State University Moorhead and coached in Bellingham, Washington prior to moving to Boundary County. She earned a master’s degree in exercise physiology and has been coaching the Badgers for three seasons now.

Coming into the end of their season, the Bonners Ferry High School Girls’ Soccer team is third in league, a “perfect place to be,” says head coach Erin Delude. Most importantly, they have had a good season recovering from the graduation of 10 seniors last year. They have been focusing on the importance of team.

Coach Delude emphasizes bonding on and off the field. She has three seniors this year— Anika Blackmore, Jocelyn Palacios, and Elizabeth Tanner. Blackmore and Palacios have been playing all four years of soccer together, but many of the 16 players on the

team, including a foreign exchange student from Thailand, are new. It has been a year of rebuilding, which Delude has viewed positively. Many of the girls participate in multiple sports throughout the year and are active in multiple areas of life. Says Delude, “The girls are seeing the value of off-season training. They understand the importance of fitness. It has been great getting new players, girls who are learning to bring balance to their lives.” After their hard work this fall, the wins and losses throughout the season, the girls have put themselves into third place for districts. They have had some exciting games—beating Timberlake twice and tying with Kellogg— but not all the excitement of the team is on the field. The girls have many dinners and activities throughout the week. Delude points out that the girls bond through activities like the Honey Badger 10k fundraiser and through social events as well.

The Perfect Time to Begin a New Routine

ust as spring is a time for rebirth, autumn is also considered a transitional season. The weather turns brisk, the leaves on trees change from dull brown to a firestorm of color, and darkness settles in earlier. For many, it is a favorite time of year, but for others it can be a trigger to falling off the health and fitness wagon. After all, how can you be expected to ignore pumpkin spice lattes?

The key, say experts, is to set goals before the new year, and not over a drink as the clock strikes midnight.

“Fall is a great time to start a fitness program because you’re going to create good habits for the holiday season and the upcoming winter months,” says Justin Price, owner of Biomechanics, a personal training and wellness coaching facility in San Diego, CA.

Head for the hills. Fall is a great time to get outside and explore your own backyard. Grab a friend and find a local park to walk, run or bike. If you’re lucky enough to live close to hills or mountains, autumn is a perfect time to go for a hike.

it must continuously work to maintain a proper pH, or chemical balance. This, say experts, is why drinking alkaline ionized water such as Alkame Water (www.alkamewater.com) should be an essential part of anyone’s health plan. The mild alkalinity is recommended by doctors because it allows for more effective hydration by supporting an optimal pH-balanced body. Additionally, Alkame is a powerful source of antioxidants, which boost the immune system, while also improving aerobic capacity and enhancing energy levels.

It Will Improve Your Overall Health

O

ne of the simplest things you can do for your health is to get enough sleep. Unfortunately, many Americans have difficulty sleeping, making what to many may seem like a simple task, be anything but simple.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, the average American sleeps about six hours and 55 minutes per night during the week, and 15 percent of adults sleep less than six hours per night. “Lack of sleep can take a significant toll on your overall health and interfere with some of your daily activities,” said Dr. Michael Thorpy, director of the Sleep-Wake Disorders Center at the Montefiore Medical Center in New York. Almost everybody has trouble sleeping now and then, but many Americans experience significant problems getting to sleep or continually wake up in the middle of the night. Such problems may be clinical symptoms of insomnia. According to the National Sleep Foundation, if you have trouble falling or staying asleep at night, or you wake up in the morning and do not feel refreshed, you may be suffering from insomnia. Insomnia can affect people in different ways. Some sufferers have trouble initially getting to sleep, while others wake up in the middle of the night and have difficulty falling back asleep.

Boundary PERSONAL CARE

To help you get better sleep, Dr. Thorpy suggests these simple tips: •

Set and stick to a sleep schedule. Establish a regular bedtime and wake time.

Set aside time at night to wind down. Spend some quiet time before going to bed. Such activities as watching TV, using the computer or working right before bedtime, or in the bedroom, can make it harder to fall asleep.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed.

Exercise regularly. However do not exercise rigorously near bedtime, and check with your doctor before starting an exercise regimen.

Don’t clock-watch. If you awaken in the middle of the night and stay in bed, don’t lie there staring at the clock. And don’t watch TV or use your laptop or cell phone, because these technologies stimulate the brain, making it tougher to fall back to sleep.

If these tips don’t help, speak with your healthcare professional to help determine whether you are suffering from insomnia and require treatment. More information regarding insomnia is available at the National Sleep Foundation website at www.sleepfoundation.org.

Yoder’s Discount Groceries By Patty Hutchens

For Henry and Verna Yoder, owning a grocery story is the culmination of their dream. And for anyone who has ever visited Yoder’s, they know it is much more than a grocery store. It is a family owned and operated business that truly cares about every customer that walks through its doors. Henry and Verna grew up in the Amish country in Ohio with no electricity, phones, television, vehicles, or radios. “Our transportation was horse and buggy,” said Henry. “Even though we enjoyed the culture, we have adopted a more modern culture.” Much of what they learned growing up are values they still hold close today – growing and preserving their own food and working together as a family. Both Verna and Henry know about hard work. Verna grew up on a farm and was one of 11 children. One of her jobs was to milk four cows by hand before school each day. Henry, who is also an ordained minister and part of Anabaptist Connections Ministry, has been a wood worker since the age of 12 and comes from a family of six children. But it is owning Yoder’s Discount Groceries that has given the couple great joy. They have lived in Bonners Ferry for ten years and opened the business in November 2010.

Mon-Sat, 9am-6pm 6788 South Main Street Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Yoder’s offers many products including discounted baking supplies, canned goods, snacks, cereal, cleaning products, kitchen utensils, pet food and frozen foods. “We also carry fresh raw milk, fresh deli meat and cheese from Ohio’s Amish country as well as our own specialty coffee,” said Henry. One quality unique to Yoder’s is their desire to search out deals on overstocks, label misprints, dented containers and buyouts so as not to let food go to waste. Henry shares some troubling statistics, including the fact that one out of every six Americans are at risk for hunger, yet more than 40% of food produced in America is not eaten. “These statistics are very sad to us,” said Henry. “Some of what we buy would get destroyed if we did not buy it. So our vision is to buy this perfectly good food and offer it at a low price in order to be a blessing to the community.” The couple has four boys and two girls who range in age from 11 to 26 all of whom help in the store in one capacity or another. “We give all the attribute for our business to God and the community,” said Henry who said the community has been a great source of support and encouragement.
