Thrive, Don’t Just Survive! 3 STEPS TO GROWING YOUR BUSINESS

T

he economy is recovering, but unfortunately, growth isn’t accelerating as it normally does in a recovery. The economy grew at an annual rate of 3% in the last quarter of 2011, but the pace slowed again early in 2012 to 1.5%. A sustained recovery still is not under way. There are 3 key strategies we can all use to skyrocket our sales over the next 12 months. 1) Have a Growth Plan “You can have brilliant ideas, but if you can’t get them across, your ideas will not get anywhere.” —Lee Iacocca Being located on the perfect corner doesn’t mean your capitalizing on your growth potential. A real growth plan has the method whereby your ideas will be delivered to potential consumers. Your brand needs to be consistently and effectively broadcasted in order to establish your reputation.

2) Set Yourself and Business Apart Don’t follow the crowd, dare to be different and seek out ways to brand your business apart from the competition. Stay on top of the trends and stay current with the way people are connecting. Incorporate these things into your business and how you are relating to the consumer. KEY: Have an up-to-date website and Facebook page!

Yoder’s Discount Groceries on the South Hill in Bonners Ferry. We have farm fresh eggs, raw milk, fresh produce and discounted groceries. Hours: Mon-Sat, 9am-6pm 876 Ginger Lane 208.267.9607

3) Connect With Your Community Consumers are trending back to local communities to purchase their goods. Reaching the locals has never been more important than now and finding unique, effective and affordable advertising is the key element in branding yourself. The people that are reading the “local” publications because of the content are doing so because they want to feel connected. This is where you want to consistently brand your message. This is where your will start to connect at the community level. “A trusted referral influences people more than the best broadcasted message. A trusted referral is the Holy Grail of Advertising.” —Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Evans Brothers Coffee BROTHERS RICK AND RANDY EVANS

I

f you haven’t heard of or tried Evans Brothers Coffee, you soon will. Brothers Rick and Randy started their artisan roasting business just three years ago, and they have already become a Sandpoint institution with many loyal fans. On your next visit to Sandpoint, look for the old granary tower just west of downtown. The brothers have led the resurgence of the Granary Arts District with their Roasting Studio, an open-air Neighborhood Espresso Bar and Studio 524 Art Lounge. Roast Master Randy had honed his coffee skills for over a decade, opening and managing a successful café in Maui, then as an apprentice and finally head roaster with a Seattle based roastery. When both Rick and Randy relocated their young families to the Inland Northwest, the vision for this business culminated over long rides on Schweitzer Mountain’s Chair 6 (now the name of a popular blend). They set a goal to positively impact communities locally, and in the global communities from which their beans would be sourced. Randy wanted to introduce the world’s finest coffees while connecting people to the stories behind the farmers, and the incredible journey coffee takes from ‘seed to cup’. Rick’s passion also lay in connecting with people, with a goal of building a long-lasting business that Sandpoint would be proud to call its own. Evans Brothers Coffee has been at the center of a coffee renaissance in this area. Just last month they hosted the Thursday Night Throwdown, featuring a latte art and brewers competition among area baristas (with first place taken by their own barista, Daniel Gunter). They have been among the first to feature a pourover brew-bar with single-origin microlot coffee, Northern Italian style espresso drinks, and cold brew coffee. Additionally the Evans’ have hosted cuppings and other events such as Neighborhood Tastings, a Coffee Aroma Chal-

lenge, Brew Methods tasting, and a Meet the Farmer event. This event brought in Miguel and Guillermo Menendez, who have established a ‘Direct Trade’ relationship with the Evans’ to carry several of their award-winning El Salvador coffees. Evans Brothers Coffee is available in Bonners Ferry at Super 1 Foods, Akins Harvest Foods, Well Life Cafe, and Sharon’s Country Store. For wholesale inquiries contact Rick Evans at 208.304.5665 or visit their website, EvansBrothersCoffee.com or their Facebook page.

ulie has lived in Bonners Ferry for three years! Julie loves Bonners Ferry.

“The people here are great and I just love how everyone waves...I’m a waver”, she said. “It’s the perfect place to raise my daughter Alexandra ‘Allie’”. Allie is 12 and a half and is a really good girl. Julie feels very lucky to have her. “Allie’s birthday is leap day and that would explain she is one of a kind”, Julie said with a smile on her face. “Sparky” plays a big role in her life as well. Sparky is a black and fat mutt that Allie and Julie adopted. You may have seen Julie in Mountian Mikes and walked out feeling like a new person. She’s one of those people that just gives you a good, cheerful, vibe and is very helpful and happy. If you are looking for something, she will help you find it! She say’s she loves her job and you just cant call it work!

Joke Alert!

Recently Julie did a charity bike ride for abused children and she rode her bike 45 miles! She raised $425.00! Riding her bike is one of her favorite things to do. She rides her bright teal colored bike almost everywhere. If you see her around town, make sure to wave! A three year old walked over to a pregnant lady while waiting with his mother in the doctors office. He inquisitively ask the lady, “Why is your stomach so big?” She replied, “I’m having a baby.” With big eyes, he asked, “Is the baby in your stomach?” She said, “He sure is.” Then the little boy, with a puzzled look, asked, “Is it a good baby?” She said, “Oh, yes. It’s a real good baby.” With an even more surprised and shocked look, he asked...“Then why did you eat him?”

Baby-Go-Round A MOTHER’S DREAM STORE FINDS A NEW HOME

P

at Lopez, a Bonners Ferry resident for the past 9 years and her stepdaughter Erica, were out one day enjoying the weather and visiting local yard sales like they had done so many times in the past. While looking through some items for sale, they were approached by their neighbor who happened to be a single father. He asked if they wouldn’t mind helping him pick out some girl’s clothing for his daughter explaining that he didn’t really have the knack for such a thing and that they would have a better eye for this. Being that there wasn’t a yard sale Pat and Erica would miss, they figured this task wouldn’t be too hard. Without hesitation, they agreed to help out their neighbor and the two women went to work and soon found plenty of cute clothing. What started out as a favor soon blossomed into an idea of opening a children’s clothing store and the both of them knew that there was a lot of great, gently used clothing available locally. Armed with that information, they started brainstorming on how they could pursue this opportunity. First up was inventory, and Pat and Erica started hitting all the local yard sales from Bonners Ferry, Sandpoint and even down into Coeur d’Alene. Second, they needed shelving, racks and displays. Last, they needed a location. All was accomplished in a short amount of time and with the help from family and friends a favor has blossomed into a beautiful Bonners Ferry business. With over 250 consigners, your bound to find exactly what your looking for. For more information visit Baby-Go-Round which is located downtown across from Huckleberry Variety. 6387 Bonner Street | Bonners Ferry, Idaho 208.267.4466

HEALTHY LIVING

Healthy Living A DEFINITION THAT IS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE

T

he definition of healthy living is different for each and every person, but there are two things that most agree on. You have to learn to eat good foods that nourish your body and you have to have some sort of exercise in your day to day life. These things can be harder than people think when they set off on a new plan for a better life, and that is why it is sometimes smart to go ahead one step at a time until you have gotten where you want to be with your lifestyle habits and your health. Diet modification is a great start when moving towards healthy living. This is something that you have to be careful with, however, as there is a lot of bad advice out there. If you aren’t sure which way to turn, talk with your doctor about changing your diet for healthy living and get recommendations from them. They will probably know the name of a good nutritionist that can get you going on the right track. These people can show you what you should be eating, what to avoid and what you can have in moderation. A nutritionist should have a college degree, so don’t be afraid to ask them about their training.

Other parts of healthy living might be things you have to quit doing. This might mean you have to find a way to stop smoking and you may have to alter or lower your intake of alcohol. You may have more trouble with these than anything else that you do. What you should do is visit with your doctor again, only this time tell them you want help with quitting or cutting back. There is a lot of emphasis on healthy living these days, and most doctors will be glad to help you in your quest, even if they feel that they have to refer you to someone else. It’ll be hard to change all of these things, but once you get going, you will enjoy your results too much to turn back to life before you found healthy habits.

If you aren’t sure about exercise in regards to healthy living, know that any type of movement is good for you. If you are not someone who moves around a lot, you can get some great benefits from just walking around the block. After a while, you may want to add more to your routine, and that is when a gym is a great idea. You should hire a personal trainer to help you find the things that work best for you in your quest for healthy living. Remember, not all personal trainers are good. If someone seems off or you don’t like what they are doing, do yourself a favor and move on to the next one.

SENIOR FOCUS

Getting Help With Your Budget HOW TO SPEND YOUR MONEY WISELY

O

ne of the adjustments that is part of life once you end your working years is adjusting to living on a different kind of income. You get used to that regular paycheck over the life of your careers in the working world and while we may be very happy to leave the stresses of the workaday life, that paycheck is one part of that world that we may miss when they finally stop. Of course, many senior citizens have some resources going into their senior years such as savings, investments, a retirement program, and, of course, Social Security. But the thing that’s hard to get used is that you are now drawing funds from a limited pool. Whether the amount of your retirement resources is big or small, outside of the income from interest and dividends, you are no longer replenishing those funds. It seems strange to say it but you have to think about how long you can live on those funds. While you would all like to live to 90 or older, from a practical point of view, we don’t want to “outlive our savings” and then become a burden to our children to support as they are working hard to raise and support their young families. So the life of senior citizen means going on some form of budget. And anything we can do to stretch the use of those retirement funds means that they will last longer as we continue to do the right thing for our health with diet and exercise so we can live a long life of a senior citizen. One resource that is worth taking a look at are programs that are geared to helping senior citizens conserve on their limited funds. One such resource is the phenomenon of the “senior discount” which is often offered at restaurants and other retail institutions to help us out. While you may be working to look

young and defeat the influence of age on your health and looks, when it comes to senior citizen discounts, its time to be honest about your age and take advantage of any help that is being offered to stretch your fixed income as much as you can. Public service companies such as your electric, gas or water companies also have programs that you can take advantage of to keep those bills under control. The one thing you want for the sake of the budget is that your bills will stay the same from month to month. But when your gas or electric bill changes a lot because of the influence of the hot summer temperatures or the cold winter months which use a lot of home heating fuel, those bills can get pretty erratic. So contact your utility companies and see what they can do for you. One program that is available to everyone is averaging your monthly utility bill. The gas or electric bill can do a quick calculation of your last year’s usage and average that and then bill you that fixed amount each month. In this way, you will know each month exactly what to expect so you don’t have any “surprises” in the mail when the bills come due. Keep your eyes open for ways that the public institutions you use the most work to help out senior citizens. They know that you are on a fixed income and nobody wants to see seniors struggle to make ends meet. Sometimes your local or state government may even have programs to reduce your sales taxes at the grocery store. Take advantage of these plans and don’t let yourself feel bad about it at all. You have worked hard all your life to support others and to be a good citizen. So let society pay you back with whatever help can be offered. You certainly deserve it.
