Medicine Man Pharmacy (Inside Super 1 Foods) Article by Patty Hutchens

W

hen Super 1 Foods opened its doors in Bonners Ferry last summer, not only did it mean an additional grocery store for this community, but a new pharmacy as well. Medicine Man Pharmacy, located in Super 1 Foods, is owned by Shane and Aimee Stuermer and Donald Smith, all of whom do much more than simply fill prescriptions. Medicine Man houses a full service compounding lab, including veterinary compounding. Compounding allows customization of medications including various flavorings, changes of dosage form, and a choice of different ways in which the medication can be given which can often make administration of certain medications easier. It also provides the customer with medications that may not be available commercially. If one is seeking answers on the topic of hormones and hormone replacement therapy, the pharmacists also provide hormone testing, consultation and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. The pharmacy also provides a discount generic list of medications. Taking several medications many times throughout the day can be overwhelming and confusing. The staff at Medicine Man Pharmacy provides medication packaging on a monthly or weekly basis. They are also available to provide what is known as brown bag consultations – a free service where consumers and patients can bring in all their medications, whether prescription or over-the-counter,

and review them one on one with one of the pharmacists. The goal is to promote education of the patient on the medication they are taking, look for possible interactions and improve the overall safety of the medication. At Medicine Man, the customer is more than just a number. To accommodate its clients, the business provides free delivery and mailing of medications. They also provide vaccinations. In effort to increase efficiency, Medicine Man utilizes robotic dispensing which counts and takes a photo of each prescription to verify accurate counting. “We also have friendly service, fast wait times and compassionate patient care,” said Shane. Shane and Aimee moved to Bonners Ferry in May 2012 and brought with them not only a great deal of experience in the industry but also a love of the outdoors, making North Idaho a perfect place to settle. The husband and wife met in school while both were studying to become pharmacists. Shane is originally from Rathdrum and worked with Donald Smith at Medicine Man Pharmacies for seven years prior to moving to Bonners Ferry. Aimee is from Helena, Montana and worked for CVS pharmacies for seven years. They look forward to meeting more people in their new home of Bonners Ferry and attribute their early success to the people of North Idaho.

Athletes of the Month Aaliyah Zarate & Kody Rice

When asked what her favorite part about High School she said that it is a different experience, meeting new people and its a challenge.

He plays the role of a “Badger” well, number 42 on the basketball team. Back country skiing is a sport he just took up and he really enjoys it, that would explain why winter is his favorite time of the year.

aliyah is a freshman “Badger”. She is the youngest in the family, having two older brothers. Her family is close and they enjoy playing sports and being outdoors and just spending time together. One of her brothers is going to college on a soccer scholarship. Aaliyah enjoys spring cause it’s her birthday and she loves the rain.

She is looking forward to going to college, although not sure what she would like to do or where she would like to go. Nothing has sparked her interest, but she knows she would like to attend a college out of state.

ody Rice is a senior at Bonners Ferry High School. He has five brothers and sisters and pizza is his favorite food.

When asked what his favorite part of the day at school was he said “ugh, that’s a tough one, probably calculus”. Kody enjoys mathematics and a challenge.

After graduating his plan is to attend the University of Idaho and major in mathematics. One of the things Kody is going to miss about leaving Bonners Ferry is the Mountains and being outside. If you cant find Kody in calculus or on the court you can find him out in the beautiful mountains back country skiing.

If you cant find Aaliyah with her Family you can find her with her best friend Jade Everheart having fun and laughing.

Are You Eating Real Foods? ARTICLE BY JULIE SMITH OF ENTIRELY NATURAL

T

hat may sound like a silly question but in today’s fast paced society with bio-engineered chemical laden food some of you may think you are eating real food. Real food grew out of the ground, walked on the ground, or swam in the sea. It didn’t come from a laboratory and include ingredients that you can’t pronounce. Your body needs real food to function properly. Vegetables, eggs, animal proteins, some nuts and seeds and fruit are real foods. The body needs carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in order for it to perform all of its daily challenges. It doesn’t recognize anything else as fuel and in fact, may store it as fat in your body. The convenient snack from the vending machine at work or school isn’t what your body needs to continue to work, study, or play. It might be cheap and convenient but your body will pay for your bad decision sooner or later If you keep eating convenient packaged foods you might as well send a monthly check to your doctor or you might want to start saving up for that big health crisis that will eventually hit you. Your body was designed to get its nutrients from food. When you feed your body real food it can process those nutrients (assuming it is being digested). When you feed your body chemicals it doesn’t know what to do with that “nonfood” and creates a problem for your body to deal with. It might send it to the liver to be removed from the body, but if the liver is overwhelmed it might store it as fat or even possibly try to send it to the kidneys to filter out. The kidneys weren’t designed to be a liver. Are you starting to see the problem with eating Nonfoods?

...the right choice for home

Nonfoods include chips, crackers, some soups and spice mixes, artificial sweeteners, pop, and a vast array of other items. If you can’t pronounce the words in the ingredient list most likely you shouldn’t put it in your mouth. You wouldn’t decide to take a swig of Anti-freeze if you were thirsty would you? Of course not, but propylene glycol is one of the main ingredients in Anti-freeze and is also found in many foods from ice cream to candied walnuts, and even some supplements. Granted the “dose” is small but continually adding chemicals to the body creates a problem and it will eventually become a burden for the body. This burden could be in the form of diabetes, cancer, ADD, hormonal imbalances, heart disease, any other forms of ill health, or even death. So, if your goal for 2013 is to get healthy a step in the right direction is to start eating REAL FOOD. Avoid the middle isles of the grocery store and shop the outer edge of the store for fruits, vegetables, nuts, animal proteins, and eggs. Anything that isn’t a REAL FOOD isn’t fuel for your body.

A VASCULAR CONDITION

P

eripheral artery disease (PAD) is an underhanded disease with a real knack for stealth.

“PAD can be very tricky. If patients experience symptoms at all, they frequently mistake them for something else. Scarily enough, even healthcare professionals sometimes have trouble diagnosing PAD,” says Dr. Emile Mohler, director of vascular medicine for University of Pennsylvania Health System, and spokesperson for the Vascular Disease Foundation. (VDF). VDF has taken on the heavy burden of educating the public about largely unknown vascular conditions, such as PAD. The lack of general awareness only adds to the mystery of the oft symptom-free disease.

while walking or exercising. While many attribute the pain to arthritis or old age and ignore it, PAD continues to deprive your legs and feet of oxygen. Now talk about sneaky. If PAD goes undiagnosed, skin ulcers and gangrene can form that may require amputation. Furthermore, people with PAD have four to five times more risk of heart attack and stroke. But, the news about PAD isn’t all bad. If patients take the necessary treatment steps, which are relatively simple, further progression is prevented, and some symptoms are reversed. First and foremost, doctors usually prescribe a high dose of lifestyle changes focusing on -- you guessed it -- a better diet and more exercise. Physical activity will help increase blood flow like no other remedy, plus it helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure. However, some medications will likely be recommended.

As the arteries in the lower limbs narrow or harden with plaque -- known as atherosclerosis – there are very few symptoms warning adults that their lower limbs are starved for blood flow.

Are you at greater risk of developing PAD? Read on to find out: • If you smoke, you have an especially high risk for PAD. • If you have diabetes, you have an especially high risk for PAD. • If you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, you are at risk for PAD. • If you’re above the age of 50 and your family has a history of atherosclerosis or coronary artery disease, you’re at risk for PAD.

The most common symptoms of the circulatory problem are cramping, pain or weakness in the legs or hip muscles

A THOUGHTFUL VALENTINE’S DAY GIFT

500 VALENTINE’S CARDS

Jim asked his friend, Tony, whether he had bought his wife anything for Valentine’s Day.

Mike walked into a post office just before Valentine’s day, he couldn’t help noticing a middle-aged, balding man standing in a corner sticking “Love” stamps on bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them. Then the man got out a bottle of Channel perfume from his pocket and started spraying scent over the envelopes.

“Yes,” came the answer from Tony who was a bit of a chauvinist, “I’ve bought her a belt and a bag.” “That was very kind of you,” Jim added, “I hope she appreciated the thought.” Tony smiled as he replied, “So do I, and hopefully the vacuum cleaner will work better now.”

MY ONE AND ONLY

By now Mike’s curiosity had got the better of him, and so I asked the man why he was sending all those cards. The man replied, “I’m sending out 500 Valentine cards signed, ‘Guess who?’” “But why?” asked Mike. “I’m a divorce lawyer,” the man replied.

Roger, who was 19 years old, was buying an expensive bracelet, to surprise his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day, at a very smart jeweller’s shop in Hatton Garden, London. The jeweller inquired, “Would you like your girlfriend’s name engraved on it?” Roger thought for a moment, grinned, then answered, “No, instead engrave ‘To my one and only love’.” The jeweller smiled and said, “Yes, sir; how very romantic of you.”

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MARRIED? When a woman on the staff of the school where I worked became engaged, a friend and colleague offered her some advice. “The first ten years are the hardest.” “How long have you been married?” she asked. “Ten years”, he replied.

Roger retorted with a glint in his eye, “Not exactly romantic, but very practical. This way, if we break up, I can use it again.”
