Senior Spotlight - BF Badgers By Patty Hutchens Morris McAlister Senior Morris McAlister has played football for three years. He plays defensive line and offensive line for the Bonners Ferry Badgers. He says that more than anything he enjoys football when it comes down to when it counts – the games. In addition to football, Morris also wrestles and plays lacrosse. He said his favorite subject is math and he looks forward to attending college upon graduation next spring. In his spare time Morris said he enjoys being with his friends. He also appreciates the fact that football and the other sports he is involved him enable him to stay in shape throughout the year. His advice he offers to younger players on the team is a message of perseverance. “Go strong and don’t quit,” said Morris. Carmen Krichbaum Carmen is in his sixth year of football and plays middle linebacker and tackle for the Bonners Ferry Badgers. He said what he enjoys most about the game of football is hitting and winning the competitions. In addition to football, Carmen also wrestles and is on the track team at Bonners Ferry. A true athlete, when asked what his favorite subject was in school, he said it was weight lifting.
In his spare time he said he enjoys anything that involves being outside. After graduating from Bonners Ferry in the spring, Carmen said he plans to join the Marines. But there are other things to accomplish first. He lists state playoffs as one thing he is looking forward to yet this season. When asked what his advice was for younger players on the team, Carmen said, “Give one hundred percent in all you do.”

Meet the 2012 BF Varsity Coaches By Patty Hutchens Don Alt Coach Alt is no stranger to Bonners Ferry football fans. He began his Bonners Ferry coaching in 1991 as the junior varsity offensive coordinator under then head coach Tom Wofford. From 1996 to 2007 Coach Alt was the assistant defensive coordinator for the junior varsity team at Bonners Ferry, and from 2008 to 2011 he served as the offensive and defensive line coach for Bonners Ferry Junior High. Before he came to Bonners Ferry, he was one of the assistant coaches at Potlatch High School in the early 1990s.
He wants the kids he coaches to realize that football is not a lifetime sport like soccer, baseball or basketball can be. Instead it is limited to the 6 or 8 years one plays in high school and maybe college. “That time limitation makes high school football the special thing it has become,” said Coach Alt. “In my 20 years of coaching, I’ve had a lot of kids come up to me that stopped playing in high school or junior high and wish they had played every year.” Matt Smith Coach Smith is in his seventh year of coaching. This is his first year for the Bonners Ferry Badgers. His previous six years were spent at Sandpoint High School where he coached with the Badgers head coach Casey McLaughlin.
This year Coach Alt serves as the junior varsity defensive coordinator as well as the offensive and defensive line coach. When not coaching football, Coach Alt works for the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office as a detention deputy. He loves to be involved with the youth and especially enjoys watching the players grow both in their athletic ability and as a person as the season progresses. Coach Alt said he has been impressed with the dedication that the juniors and seniors have shown not only during the football season but also the work they put in during the off season. “Football teaches life lessons every day,” said Alt. “How to go to work - even when you’re not feeling your best - because the team needs you to complete the job. That is probably the best and most important lesson.”

Coach Smith is the defensive coordinator, running backs coach and linebackers coach. Smith, who works for a business in downtown Sandpoint, said he has been impressed with the group of young men he has the privilege of coaching and has enjoyed getting to know them. “I like teaching them the game and I love finding out more about them and what drives them in life,” said Coach Smith. He said the kids have made an impression with how hard they are willing to work to learn a new system and to continually

Meet the 2012 BF Varsity Coaches By Patty Hutchens strive to improve every day. When asked what is the one life lesson he would like to share with his players, he responded, “True character is shown by how you act when you think that no one else is watching.” David Koon For anyone who is familiar with Bonners Ferry football, they know that David Koon has been a fixture on the sidelines for many years. Koon has played an important role with the football team for the last 33 years. “I have been through a lot of coaches,” said Koon. He says he receives a lot of joy from interacting with the kids and watching them grow and mature as they go from junior tackle all the way through the varsity level. Much of his role with the Badgers includes helping with the equipment and providing water to the players when needed. But he sees his most important duty as doing what he can to help the team get mentally ready for what takes place on the field. “I’m a motivator,” said Koon. He said his advice to the young players is to go out and have fun. “High school goes by fast,” he said.

Should Grandpa Still Be Driving?
S
ome of the issues involving helping your senior citizen parent or grandparent can be difficult and full of tough decisions. Seniors face unique medical and lifestyle issues that call upon them and those that love them to find solutions that they can live with. And it’s very common for senior citizens to live in denial about the effects of their advancing years and to accept the changes in the way they live that must happen for them to continue live in a safe and healthy way. Driving is just such an issue. For most adults, the ability to drive a car is an integral part of our sense of empowerment and freedom. We seldom think of what it would be like if we couldn’t just “jump in the car and go.” But that feeling of complete freedom to go where you want and when you want is such a deep part of how we all function that it seems inconceivable to any of us to lose that mobility and freedom. But for senior citizens, there will come a time when they will need to give up driving. The causes are many, but the most common reason that calls for senior citizens to stop driving is failing eyesight. While much can be done to preserve the eyesight of senior citizens, if their ability to see becomes a hazard behind the wheel, they will have to be told that its time to let that precious freedom go. So how do we help our loved one accept and then cooperate with a plan to reduce or eliminate their driving? You might be surprised that when it comes time for you as the child or caregiver of a senior citizen to talk to them about giving up driving, they may have already begun to think about it. Senior citizens are very aware of their physical condition. So while they may resist giving up the car or van, they may know deep
down that this time would come. Some other compelling reasons to take that step sooner rather than later are… • Doctor’s Orders. If the senior citizen’s doctor specifically directs that he/she cannot drive. The senior will often respect that directive even more than family advice. A doctor’s credibility goes a long way on this issue. • Their Own Safety. In the same way that no senior citizen wants to “fall and not get up”, the idea of being in an accident, which may cause serious injury resulting in painful recovery and possible permanent reduced freedom and mobility, is a compelling reason to turn the car keys over to someone else. • The Safety of Others. It’s easy to find news stories of a senior citizen who continued to drive only to be involved in an accident that caused injury or death to others, maybe even children. That prospect is so horrifying to a grandma or grandpa that they may choose to ground themselves then ever face that kind of guilt. • Savings. Getting rid of the car means no more upkeep, car payments, gas expense and auto insurance. Senior citizens are penny wise so that kind of savings can make a big difference. If your senior citizen comes to understand that accommodations can be made to help them get out and about, the loss of that car may not be a big deal. Public transportation or buses that community services centers send out to retirement villages can help senior citizens get out to the grocery store and to doctor’s appointments. And if their family pitches in to help drive grandma or grandpa around, not only do they lose the expense and liability of driving, they get more family time too. And that is a great incentive to give up driving and let others serve as their chauffeur.

Two sea monsters were swimming around in the ocean, looking for something to do. They came up underneath a ship that was hauling potatoes. Bob, the first sea monster, swam underneath the ship, tipped it over and ate everything on the ship. A little while later, they came up to another ship, again hauling potatoes. Bob again capsizes the ship and eats everything on board. The third ship they found was also hauling potatoes and Bob once again capsized it and ate everything. Finally his buddy Bill asked him, “Why do you keep tipping over those ships full of potatoes and eating everything on board?” Bob replied, “I wish I hadn’t, but I just can’t help myself once I start. Everyone knows you can’t eat just one potato ship.”
THE TURTLE AND THE TREE
Deep within a forest a little turtle began to climb a tree. After hours of effort he reached the top, jumped into the air waving his front legs and crashed to the ground. After recovering, he slowly climbed the tree again, jumped, and fell to the ground. The turtle tried again and again while a couple of birds sitting on a branch watched his sad efforts. Finally, the female bird turned to her mate. “Dear,” she chirped, “I think it’s time to tell him he’s adopted.”
