A New Era Has Begun! By Steve Russo
A
new era has begun for the Bonners Ferry Football program! Casey McLaughlin has been named head football coach; the school’s fourth head coach for the past three years. McLaughlin has been coaching in Sandpoint the past six years where he spent the last three as varsity defensive coordinator and assistant head coach. McLaughlin was a part of a program that lead teams to a 91% winning percentage versus 4A schools over the past six years, 4 league championships and a state championship appearance. “I am excited to be a Badger and to be part of this community.” McLaughlin went on to say, “ I am not in Sandpoint any longer, I am in Bonners and I couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity than the one I have here.” After a tumultuous 3-6 season McLaughlin is ready for the challenge, “I only see positives here, I don’t view this as challenging, but rather as an opportunity to establish a program in a great community.” “We’re extremely excited to have someone with Casey’s integrity, work ethic, experience and energy,” Bonners Ferry athletic director Kris Knowles said. McLaughlin went on to say, “there is a lot do and I am not wasting any time. There are great athletes here and they have been coached well. I will start the process of building my coaching staff soon and we will get after it.” When asked what is the one thing he would like the community to know about him, McLaughlin answered, “For the past ten years I have been coaching football. Now that I have had the opportunity to be under some great head coaches, I feel I am ready to be the head coach! My desire is to build a culture where players and coaches are challenged to maximize their potential both on and off the field. My goal as a coach and as an educator is to ignite a passion for life in those I am around. We are all capable of amazing things if we would be willing to dare greatly and to never settle for being average.”

Meet the Varsity Coaching Staff By Patty Hutchens
Casey McLaughlin, Head Coach - Defensive Coordinator
Casey McLaughlin is in his first year as Head Coach for the Bonners Ferry Badgers Varsity football team. This year will be McLaughlin’s twelfth year as a football coach, something he said he enjoys and finds very rewarding. “I love working with young men to build character and team unity,” said McLaughlin. “It is very rewarding to watch a team of individuals come together into a team.” He is impressed with the hard work this year’s team has shown. “They are tough and have a lot of courage,” said Coach McLaughlin. A US history and physical education teacher at Sandpoint High School, McLaughlin has been impressed with not only the kids he coaches, but the Bonners Ferry community as a whole. “Bonners is a great community that supports their kids and school,” said McLaughlin. “They want to win and they want to see things done right. It is a fantastic place to coach football.” Anyone who knows Coach McLaughlin can attest to his character and the lessons he brings to the kids with whom he interacts. “I give the kids a lot of advice throughout the year. In fact my coaching principles are what we call the Badger Code,” said Coach McLaughlin. “The code is all about teaching life lessons that will carry a person through life as well as football.” He lists those principles as the following: Everything Counts, Relentlessness, Dare Greatly, As One (team work), and Accountability. “The purpose of the code is to teach players to give everything of themselves at every moment of life,” said McLaughlin. “Give your all, trust your team, take responsibility for your actions and never, ever be outworked.”
Cory Kramer, JV Offensive Coordinator / Varsity Receiver’s
The junior varsity offensive coordinator and varsity wide receiver coach is no stranger to football fans in Bonners Ferry. He is a 1993 graduate of Bonners Ferry High School and played football for them during his high school years. During the last six years, Coach Kramer has coached at all levels in Bonners Ferry from fifth grade up to high school. When not coaching football, Coach Kramer is a heavy equipment operator for Foust Incorporated in Bonners Ferry. He said that he is enjoying coaching with Head Coach Casey McLaughlin. “Casey brings a different approach,” said Coach Kramer, who adds that the staff has been working together since last spring to make this season the best it can be. “We have had some rough patches, but we are making a lot of progress so far.” He said his advice to his players is to strive for perfection – on the field, off the field and throughout life. He invites everyone in the community to come out on Thursday and Friday nights to cheer on both the junior varsity and varsity teams.
Corey Richards, Varsity Defensive Line
Coach Richards will be coaching the varsity defensive line this season. A native of Bonners Ferry, Coach Richards graduated from the school in 1987 and after playing football for Bonners Ferry he went on to play for two years at Rocky Mountain College. He has spent over 20 years coaching in his hometown and along with Coach Cory Kramer, he helped start the Bonners Ferry fifth and sixth grade tackle football program. 8 WWW.NEWSLINESONLINE.COM PAGE 8 WWW.NEWSLINESONLINE.COM
“The junior class this year was our first group of sixth grade players we coached,” said Coach Richards. A father of two, Coach Richards recently received his degree in Social Work and is starting to work on his masters degree. He said working with Head Coach Casey McLaughlin has helped him broaden his vision of the game. “Every time you meet a new coach you are introduced to a new philosophy,” said Coach Richards. His advice to his team is to give all they can to the game and to remember that football is a team sport. “In life you will always be part of a team, whether it is at work or in your marriage,” said Coach Richards. “Develop a team concept early on.” As for the season, he said he is looking forward to seeing the kids grow. “We have a great bunch of kids and it’s a pleasure to coach them.”
Troy Holt, Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator/ Offensive Line A football coach for 15 years, Coach Holt serves as the assistant head coach for the Bonners Ferry varsity team as well as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Nine of his 15 years of experience have been spent coaching varsity and junior varsity. Coach Holt also coached eighth grade football for six years at Sandpoint Middle School. Troy has been a school teacher for sixteen years, the last thirteen spent at Sandpoint Middle School teaching computer, health and physical education. Prior to that he was an elementary teacher for three years. Coach Holt said he is thoroughly enjoying working with the young men on the Boners Ferry team and said they have great personalities. “The young men are very connected to their community,” said Holt. “We had a fundraiser and there was a lot of support.” His advice to his players is not what they should do on the field, but what they can do in the classroom. “Get the best education you can and strive to get the best grades,” said Holt.

Senior Spotlight: BF Badgers By Patty Hutchens
Alan Avery
Senior Alan Avery, who has played football for one year, is both a defensive back and wide receiver for Bonners Ferry this year. He said he loves the competition factor that football provides. Unsure of his post high school plans, Alan – like many high school athletes – says physical education is his favorite school subject. When asked what he looks forward to most this season, he said “Game day!” In his spare time Alan said he enjoys hanging out with his friends. As a senior many kids look up to him and the other seniors on the team. The best advice he can give those kids is not football related, but instead academic. “Get good grades,” he advised.
Zach Wilson
Senior Zach Wilson is no stranger to football. Having played 8 years, the running back and safety for the Bonners Ferry Badgers is passionate about the game. He hopes to play college football and says his favorite subject in school is physical education. He enjoys the thrill of the games and when asked what he looks forward to most this season, his answer reflects his love for the sport. “Everything,” he responded. In addition to football, Zach also plays lacrosse and wrestles. It is no surprise that when asked what he enjoys to do in his spare time that he says he likes to play sports. When asked what his advice is to the younger members of the team, he responded, “Give it your all.”

Brendan Evans
Senior Brendan Evans has played football for one year and is playing wide receiver and corner back for the Badgers this season. He said what he enjoys most about the sport is the camaraderie it provides. “Just being with the team,” he said. In addition to football, Brendan also plays basketball. In his spare time he enjoys hunting. When asked what his favorite school subject is, he shared that it is science. He plans to join the army after graduating from high school. But before that he has one goal, going to State with his team. When asked what advice he can give to the younger football players on the team, he responded, “Work hard.”

lzheimer’s disease is an incurable disease that effects ones memory as it progresses. Alzheimer’s disease most commonly effects the brains of seniors, causing their memories to fade away forever. Not all seniors who become occasionally forgetful have Alzheimer’s disease. This article will give you some tips about what to look for if you think it may be Alzheimer’s. A great tip for improving your memory is to make sure that you are getting enough sleep at night. This is crucial because without enough sleep, your brain will not be able to operate at its peak potential and you will not be able to process all that you need to. Most of us live in routines. Our lives are centered around having the same routine each day or each week. If we stray from that routine it can keep us from being able to remember things. Your routine is what is holding back your memory. Change how you do things each day to force your brain to develop new ways of remembering and sorting information. If you want to improve your memory, avoid cramming. Last minute memorization can help you remember things, but the benefits are usually only short term. Try to learn new information gradually. Skills and information learned over time are more likely to stick with you. Cramming usually means you’ll forget it as quickly as you learned it. A great tip for improving your memory is to make sure that you change your study habits from time to time. This is a good procedure because it will help to prevent your memory from becoming stagnant. Changing your location will help to stimulate your mind and open up your ability to store more in your long term memory.
Making many associations to something can help someone remember it much easier. An example of this would be connecting whatever one wants to remember to a personal story that the individual has. By making that connection to something that they already remember they can help themselves remember the new information as well. As we age, memory loss can become a real problem. The best way to protect yourself from memory loss is to increase brain activity. Reading, doing crossword puzzles and learning something new like playing a musical instrument can keep your brain healthy and keep memory loss at bay. Another helpful way to help you remember information such as people’s names, is to use images that will jog your memory when need be. Using images to supplement facts and figures is an easy way to categorize the information, but will help you associate the important details in the short and the long term. Sleep is vital to maintaining mental clarity and memory. By avoiding sleep, you make your senses and mind foggier, hurting your ability to focus and piece together information. In addition, during sleep, your brain forges pathways that lead to memory. Getting good sleep (and a good amount of it) will improve your memory. As stated in the beginning of this article, Alzheimer’s is an incurable disease that effects the memory of seniors. Occasional forgetfulness is very normal, while forgetting all the time may be something more serious. Apply the tips from this article to help you determine if it is normal memory loss, or something more.

A sign was hung in an office window. It read:
Upon entering a little country store, the stranger noticed a sign warning, “Danger! Beware of dog!” posted on the glass door. Inside, he noticed a harmless old hound dog asleep on the floor beside the cash register. “Is that the dog folks are supposed to beware of?” he asked the owner.

A dog was ambling down the street and saw the sign. He looked at it for a moment, pulled it down with his mouth, and walked into the manager’s office, making it clear he wished to apply for the job.
