ORGANIZATION WITH A CAUSE

Safe Passage

Safe Passage, founded in 1977 as the Women’s Center, emerged from a deep commitment to building a safer, violence-free community. It was created by a group of survivors and advocates who saw the urgent need for support and safe spaces. Today, their mission is all about preventing domestic and sexual violence through education, advocacy, and support, helping survivors regain control of their lives. They focus on promoting healthy relationships and raising awareness to create a respectful, equal, and safe environment for everyone.

Over the years, Safe Passage has made a real difference by offering free, confidential services like crisis intervention, counseling, and a safe shelter. In 2012, they opened the Safe Passage Children’s Advocacy Center (SPCAC) to give children a safe place to heal, working with experts to minimize trauma. They even have a facility dog, Lucy, who offers emotional support during interviews and court appearances.

“Our mission is rooted in the belief that every individual has the right to live safely, free from fear and harm,” says Executive Director Amanda Krier. Safe Passage also works with North Idaho schools to teach teens about healthy relationships, and they connect with the community through workshops, partnerships, and social media. Their work is guided by compassion and a survivor-centered approach, striving to create a future free from violence.

FINEST PERSON OF THE YEAR

HARBOR LOCAL’S

Brooke Larson Miller, a North Idaho native raised in Sandpoint, attributes much of her success to the values instilled by her mother, Maureen. Growing up in a family led by a truck driver father and a stay-at-home mother, Brooke learned early that hard work was essential. Maureen encouraged all six of her children to work hard, be kind, and approach life with a “never give up” attitude, values that Brooke carries with her today.

After earning a B.S. in Behavioral Science from Northwest University, Brooke initially aimed to become a counselor. However, inspired by a desire to create something of her own, she opened Beau Monde Exchange in 2000. Over 23 years, she expanded the resale apparel store to six locations, providing quality clothing for all budgets while promoting sustainability. Her husband, Dave, has been a steadfast supporter through her journey, helping her balance raising their five children and managing multiple businesses, including the local coffee/event shop, Lyfe Public House.

Brooke’s commitment to community service is evident in her philanthropic efforts. Her $10 charity bag sales have raised over $175,000 for local organizations, and she often lends a helping hand to individuals in crisis. “We can’t let fear limit us. One of my favorite scriptures is ‘Fear not, for I am with you, says the Lord.’ Isaiah 41:10. I’m a firm believer that courage is like a muscle; the more you use it, the stronger it gets.”

Guided by her faith and the mantra “punch fear in the face,” Brooke’s courage has driven her to create a legacy of generosity, positivity, and service.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Mandi Ferguson

Ramsey Elementary School

Mandi Ferguson’s journey as a teacher is one of dedication and connection with her students and their families. She reflects, “I’ve always loved learning and had a heart for supporting others, especially those struggling.” Beginning her career as a special education teacher in Lewiston, Mandi’s passion for teaching grew with each role she took. Now, at Ramsey in Coeur d’Alene, she finds joy in “looping” with her students, a unique approach where she teaches them in both 4th and 5th grade. This twoyear journey allows her to build deeper relationships with her students and their families, providing a continuous, supportive learning environment that fosters growth over a longer period.

Recognized as Coeur d’Alene Living Local’s Finest Teacher, Mandi feels humbled. She says, “This award is a testament to the relationships built with my students, their families, other teachers, and our community.” Her classroom is a nurturing space where students feel valued and empowered to lead their learning. Mandi notes that meaningful connections often result in lasting impacts, as seen in students who grow from quiet, withdrawn individuals into confident leaders in her classroom.

Teaching for Mandi extends beyond academics; it’s about creating trust, inspiring resilience, and supporting each student’s journey. She says, “My teaching journey has bonded my life with the lives of my students and their families,” highlighting her profound impact daily.

Shop Strengthen local Coeur d’Alene

Support local businesses year-round to enrich our community

As the holiday season approaches, it's easy to rely on the ease of the internet or the big-box retailers. But there’s an even more powerful alternative that impacts our local community and residents: shop local. Buying locally owned shops around Coeur d’Alene for the holidays and beyond supports our community's local businesses and personalizes every purchase.

something you don’t get anywhere else

Local shops are not just stores — they’re owned by neighbors who know our town and deliver something you don’t get anywhere else. When buying outdoor gear from Black Sheep Sporting Goods or a statement piece from Clark’s Diamond Jewelers, you purchase highquality items and support individuals who care about Coeur d’Alene. Each dollar locally spent supports the community, generates jobs, and keeps money moving in and out of our local economy, which is suitable for all of Coeur d’Alene.

Buying locally also provides a connection and gives gifts a more personal feel. Locally sourced gifts usually have narratives, memorable, original things you won’t find elsewhere. If you shop

for local artists and family-run companies, you’re giving a gift that captures the creative spirit of the Inland Northwest. These aren’t mass-produced products, which makes the gift even more special.

Local businesses have offerings and products that provide a lasting memory for the adventurous thinker who can think outside the box with gifting. Give the gift of a clean, sparkling space with a certificate from Mrs. Clean. It’s the perfect way to help someone unwind, reduce stress, and brighten someone’s day.

Local shopping is intimate, too. Companies like New Leaf Nursery offer hand-picked Christmas trees, decorations, and all the garden

local retailers make our community vibrant and inviting

supplies you need year-round. They provide a gathering place for neighbors to hang out, for the holiday centerpiece, or shopping for spring and summer flowers, trees, and more. Giving back to small family stores like New Leaf Nursery also feels like being part of something bigger than ourselves, allowing encounters to flow and transactions to be felt.

Our local retailers make our community vibrant and inviting in ways big retailers can’t. They establish a warm environment in which customer service is one-on-one and personal. For instance, Clark’s Diamond Jewelers goes above and beyond to get the piece you need for an engagement, anniversary, or even a holiday gift. Their knowledgeable and professional staff sets them apart. It makes every purchase feel more like an interaction with your neighbor, not just a sale.

Beyond the satisfaction of finding just the right gift, shopping locally ensures that Coeur d’Alene’s favorite businesses will continue to be part of our community. For example, with its wide range of outdoor and camping supplies, Black Sheep Sporting Goods brings people together around shared outdoor pursuits central to life here in North Idaho. Supporting this establishment ensures that future generations enjoy local shopping experiences that reflect our area’s natural beauty and lifestyle.

Remember that shopping locally isn’t just for holidays; it’s a year-round investment in our community. When we help keep businesses such as Clark’s Diamond Jewelers, New Leaf Nursery, or Black Sheep Sporting Goods running year-round, we keep our community vibrant and healthy. When you shop at them, you form relationships with the owners and employees of those businesses and establish a sense of mutual support that enriches everyday life in Coeur d'Alene.

So, as you gear up for the holidays, remember Coeur d’Alene’s small businesses. For sprigs of greenery or a gift card, go to New Leaf Nursery, and for a custom jewelry design, visit Clark’s Diamond Jewelers, and go

to Black Sheep Sporting Goods for that adventure-seeker in your life. Supporting local businesses like Mrs. Clean is about shopping for the holidays and investing in the city you call home.

Don’t just go anywhere this season; buy locally. If you do that, you’re helping to create a diverse, connected, and well-built community that will last through every season. Shopping locally helps keep Coeur d'Alene thriving, preserving the unique experiences and relationships that make this town special. Let’s commit to supporting our local businesses yearround so our community can continue to grow for years to come.

Winter Decorating Tips

Make your home feel warm, cozy and welcoming with these easy winter decorating tips.

1

2 3

Layering with textures

When it gets cold outside, create an inviting haven by adding soft textures everywhere. Put plush blankets and chunky knit throws over your couches and chairs. Layering rugs in living areas adds warmth underfoot and also helps to create an inviting atmosphere.

Use nature

Bring the outside in. Use seasonal decorations like pinecones and evergreen branches to create a wintery feel. Rustic wood is a popular natural element to incorporate into your home and is a great way to refresh your look using natural materials during winter.

Warm lighting

Change all the bright lighting in your home to warmer hues. Use candles, string lights, and soft lamps to create a warm glow during the long winter nights. Try lanterns or candles from nature shops in seasonal scents such as cinnamon or pine.

CROC COATINGS CONTINUES TO SHINE

Local business transforming homes and businesses in North Idaho and Spokane

JLIKE MEDIA TEAM

im and Kelley Hobart began the next, exciting chapter in their life 14 years ago. Inspired by the beauty of North Idaho, the abundance of outdoor opportunities and the the area's friendly people, they moved into their custom home in Hayden in 2010.

Everything was more beautiful than they had imagined it could be, except the epoxy flooring in the garage; after only a few years, it had faded, chipped and peeled up in the areas where they parked their cars. “I looked for solutions and was told I would need to have it professionally ground off, and then they would re-apply a new epoxy floor,” recalls Jim. “I didn’t want to repeat using epoxy only to get the same results a few years later.”

He and Kelley discovered the Penntek flooring system while visiting a relative — who raved about it! Jim decided to reach out to the manufacturer and discovered that no one was offering their flooring system alternative to epoxy in North Idaho or Spokane. This inspired the Hobarts to change that. They introduced Croc Coatings in 2020, bringing this revolutionary flooring system to the area so that others could have a new choice with premium flooring solutions. Since that time, they have installed over 1,000 Croc floors for local residents and businesses.

“We started the business with a mission to provide extraordinary floors and service and have grown as a result of delivering on this promise,” affirms Jim. “However, it’s not all about growth; it’s about serving a true need and delivering exceptional service to our customers.”

Small Steps for a Successful New Year

At the beginning of a new year, it’s easy to get caught up in setting big goals for the future. But if you often give up on your resolutions, it might be time to change how you set them. Instead of trying to do too much at once, focus on a few small, achievable goals and build momentum over time. If you have bigger aspirations, break them into smaller tasks that bring you closer to achieving them. Celebrate each small milestone, even if it’s just mentally. Consistency is key: find habits that lead you to become the person you want to be. Remember, progress is more important than perfection, so journal your steps or set reminders to track accomplishments. Don’t hesitate to modify goals if something feels off. Surround yourself with positivity, uplifting friends, and moments of reflection. Start small, stay focused, and have a transformative year.

HealthBeauty &

Foods, supplements, and hydration for glowing skin and hair

Healthy skin and lustrous hair don't happen at the surface. Although skincare routines and scalp products are designed to enhance your exterior, your natural beauty begins on the inside, fueled by proper nourishment. Nourishing your natural beauty starts with learning about the best foods for healthy skin and hair, beauty-boosting supplements, and how hydration can boost your healthy hair and skin. Because it's true that you are what you eat, fueling your body with the right foods makes sense – especially when it comes to supporting your beauty efforts. Hydrating and choosing the right supplements provide plenty of beauty benefits, supporting your glowing skin and lustrous hair. Below is a breakdown of how to nourish your beauty from within for radiant skin and lustrous hair.

Foods

The food you eat plays an important role in supporting your beauty efforts. Nutritious, beauty-boosting foods provide the vitamins and minerals that skin and hair need to thrive. Below is a guide to a few of our favorites.

Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for hair and skin. They also fight inflammation, which can contribute to acne. Omega-3 fatty acids support collagen, structural protein that keeps skin strong and firm. It thickens hair shafts to reduce frizz and enhance shine.

Avocado is a beauty-boosting food that is rich in healthy fats. It also contains vitamin C and antioxidants that support supple skin and sustainable shine. Vitamin C is essential to collagen formation, too, as are the healthy fats from avocado that keep hair silky and shiny.

Nuts and seeds, such as almonds, walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds, provide a powerful punch of nourishment that includes biotin, vitamin E, and zinc. All of these nutrients support skin and hair health. Biotin is known as a beauty vitamin because it supports hair growth and prevents breakage. Zinc is essential to skin repair and supports a healthy scalp, too.

Supplements

In addition to the beauty-boosting range of foods for skin and hair, the right supplements can support your beauty efforts, too, as they fill in dietary gaps and provide nourishment to support your beauty regime. Collagen is a popular supplement for skin and hair, and deservedly so. It’s an important body compound and the most abundant protein in the skin, which is why it supports a glowing appearance. As we age, collagen production declines, contributing to wrinkles and sagging skin. A collagen supplement can help to boost skin hydration and elasticity while strengthening hair to reduce the risk of breakage.

Biotin, or vitamin B7, is another beauty-boosting supplement often promoted as a hair supplement, but it also helps promote healthy skin. Biotin bolsters hair growth, reduces the risk of hair thinning, and contributes to a natural shine. It has also been found to benefit the skin, as it supports the turnover of cells by helping the body metabolize fats and carbohydrates. The process of recycling skin cells can support a smooth, supple appearance and more glowing skin.

Winter Hair Care: Stay Glossy

Keep your locks lush this winter with some essential strategies for hair protection and locking in moisture. Deep-condition your hair at least once a week using coconut or argan oil to refresh moisture. Wash your hair with lukewarm water during winter to keep the scalp hydrated, and try to cut down on heat styling. To protect your locks from cold winds, wrap your hair with a cozy hat or scarf and massage your scalp with jojoba or argan oil for extra moisture and strength. Stay glossy this winter!

Hyaluronic acid is another popular beauty supplement widely used to help skin and hair. Similar to biotin, it helps retain moisture in the skin to support supple skin and a glowing appearance. It’s also been shown to support hair strength and shine, likely by moisturizing the scalp.

Omega-3 fatty acids, the healthy fats found in highly-regarded organic fatty fish, is often recommended as a supplement for those who aren't likely to get enough from their food. Its anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce the appearance of acne or red, inflamed skin. Omega-3 fatty acids can also help strengthen the hair and reduce the risk of hair breakage while supporting a natural texture.

Hydration

Water is crucial to supporting beauty from the inside out, as it helps to clear toxins from cells and keeps skin supple while reducing the risk of hair brittleness. Drink up — adults should aim for eight glasses of water each day to properly hydrate the skin and hair. Adequate water intake helps to reduce the appearance of dryness and even wrinkles by keeping the cells hydrated. Staying hydrated helps keep the hair supple by reducing frizz and flattening split ends.

Drinking tea can contribute to your daily hydration efforts, including antioxidant-rich green tea, or powerful, caffeine-free options like herbal tea or chamomile. Both types of tea offer antioxidants like polyphenols and flavonoids that support strong, supple skin and reduced wrinkles. Teas are helpful in part because they contain antioxidants such as polyphenols and flavonoids that help support supple skin and reduce wrinkles. Chamomile is also soothing and can calm inflamed skin.

Water-rich foods can also offer a hydration boost and a punch of vitamins and minerals that support skin and hair health. Cucumbers, watermelon, and oranges are high-water-content foods that can help boost hydration. To make the most out of your beauty-boosting efforts, do your best to balance one cup of caffeinated, alcoholic, or other dehydrating beverages with extra water or hydrating foods to counteract their dehydrating effects on the skin and hair.

While skincare routines and hair treatments can enhance your appearance, true beauty starts from the inside, with healthy foods and habits that help you nourish your body from within. You can achieve radiant, glowing skin and strong, healthy hair by fueling your body with the right foods, supplements, and hydration. Embrace the power of nourishing your body from within, and let your natural beauty shine.

Tips for Choosing the Best Supplements

1. Look out for science-backed formulas

Look for supplements that harness the power of science so your body can tap into the most cutting-edge research and clinical studies. Brands that research and incorporate the most innovative science are more likely to develop products that contain proven, effective ingredients to give you the highest-quality nutrition available.

2. Focus on bioavailability

Formulas should incorporate bioavailable ingredients to ensure your body absorbs and uses the nutrients in the supplement. Advanced technologies such as liposomal or nano-formulated supplements ensure that your body can absorb and use the nutrients for your greatest benefit.
