Community Rallies Around Local Ice Rink VOLUNTEERS KEY IN REOPENING OF FRONTIER ICE ARENA Article by Colin Anderson
I
f you need further proof that community spirit is alive and well across north Idaho, look to the recently reopened Frontier Ice Arena. Despite a catastrophic roof collapse that took four years to recover from, the rink is now back up and running thanks to the generosity of local businesses and countless volunteers. When the roof collapsed, insurance was not able to cover the entire rebuild. The Kootenai Youth Recreation Organization (KYRO), who runs the rink, would have to raise an additional $800,000 to get the building back up and ready for skaters. STCU and Frontier communications stepped up with major gifts as did countless other local businesses and community members, all giving what they could. Even the lobby furniture was donated by The Wine Cellar. Those who might not have been able to contribute financially helped in other ways by making runs to the dump, helping install flooring and glass, and getting the rink ready for opening day. What you see now is a fully-enclosed arena with an NHL sized rink and a few NHL connections. The netting was bought from the Edmonton Oilers and the glass surrounding the rink came from the RBC Center, home of the Carolina Hurricanes. There are hockey associations from beginners all the way to Compete Hockey Academy which is run by former NHLer Cam Severson who helps teens realize their dreams of playing minor league hockey and beyond. Tournaments are being held on a regular basis, bringing teams from across the west and Canada which helps pump additional dollars into the local economy. Local figure skaters use the ice and there are learn to skate and learn to play hockey classes taught weekly for all levels of skaters. The rink can also be rented out for corporate events or birthday parties. While the rink is up and running, there are still improvements to be made. Future donations and sponsorships will go towards updating the concession stand, adding stadium seating and electronics, and improving the locker rooms. KYRO has set a goal of adding a second covered rink to the facility in just five years and will again need the communities help to reach its goal. IT CAN MEAN MORE THAN LITTLE PROTECTION AGAINST THE COMMON COLD
F
or people with diabetes, taking a multivitamin every day can mean much more than a little protection against the common cold.
Research is finding that multivitamins can be the first line of defense against many different types of infections, including respiratory infections and influenza. “Once a person with diabetes gets an infection, it’s much harder for them to get rid of it, and it can lead to dire consequences, even death,” says Registered and Certified DietitianNutritionist Debra Spector. “And since some diabetic patients don’t normally respond well to treatment, prevention is key.” Taking a special diabetes multivitamin—usually found in the diabetes section of a drugstore, not the vitamin section—allows a diabetic person to be proactive with their health, and avoid nutrient deficiencies that can lead to problems.

Take Your Multivitamin to Control Diabetes The year-long study among 130 patients, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, found that the incidence of infection was much lower among diabetics who took a multivitamin versus those who did not. Infection occurred in only 17 percent of diabetic patients who took a multivitamin versus the 93 percent who took a placebo. The study also found that regular multivitamin usage reduced the rate of minor urinary tract and gastrointestinal infections in people with diabetes. Because of the nature of the disease, it’s not uncommon for diabetics to experience nutrient deficiencies. Diabetes medications and frequent urination can lead to the loss of vital nutrients that protect the body. “Since there are many health risks that can result from vitamin and mineral deficiencies, I encourage my diabetic patients to find a multivitamin supplement with more potent levels of important nutrients to meet their needs,” says Spector. “It should contain Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), an important nutrient that most ‘regular’ multivitamins do not have. Just a 40 minute drive from downtown Spokane, this mountain is popular with families and a great place for beginners to learn. Mount Spokane also keeps 16 runs open for night skiing which costs just $20. ecorating can be one of the most exciting times during your experience as a homeowner. Not only are you creating the essence of your home, you are also adding your very own personal touch and style.
One of the easiest ways to add unique spice to an ordinarily drab room— incorporate exceptional artwork. “Many of my clients are simply amazed at how effective a colorful painting can be at bringing new life to a room that has become tired,” says Matthew Johnston, an artist known for his vibrant Tall Tulips paintings (talltulips.com). Large High-Traffic Rooms For family rooms, living rooms and rooms off the kitchen, Johnston recommends figurative diptych paintings to create a story within each area. Diptych paintings consist of two separate panels that hang together and work as one. “In my figurative diptych paintings, each figure has their own physical space, yet they are a couple,” says Johnston. “Their face is cropped, and viewers can imagine themselves as being in the painting. The viewer has to look to other parts of the painting to imagine a story...each individual person can create a different story for the painting.”
Awkward Wall Spaces For stairways, long hallways and between windows, Johnston recommends using a tall, narrow painting, like his Tall Tulips. “They are perfect for hanging up a staircase,” says Johnston. “You can hang the Tall Tulips at different heights following the risers up the stairs; a great look for a difficult space.” This style of painting also works well because they are bright and don’t require ideal lighting.

hether you have arthritis, have overused your hands or have another hand or upper body condition, daily tasks may be slower and more difficult. Stiffness, pain and numbness often increase with the weather and seasonal tasks like snow shoveling or even wrapping packages. Rather than giving the same old gifts, there are many simple and inexpensive gifts that will be used and remembered throughout the year. Heat helps to relieve stiffness and increases blood flow. There are a variety of warming mitts and heating pads available. Rice bags are reasonable in price and you can easily make these at home (instructions on our website cdahandtherapy. com). Paraffin units that you can use to coat the hand to hold in heat and needed moisture are available at department stores or on line. Okay – here is one old standard – gloves. Yes you do need to wear them. There are many varieties available that have thinsulate or other insulation, some that have warming packs or even batteries. Be sure gloves fit well and that they are non slip. Especially for weak hands, too tight of a grip can cause additional pain and damage to joints. In fact, larger grips are a way of “saving” your hands. Using a steering wheel cover can make your steering wheel larger and easier to grip for comfort and safety. Limiting forceful or extra tight grip and forceful pinch and twist movements, as with a standard can opener, is critical. Look for larger and ergonomic handles on kitchen utensils, snow shovels and other tools.
Many people do more cooking during the holidays. Using electric food choppers, mixers and can openers can help. However you want to find ones that are easy to operate – these are not all equal so these should be tried out. Jar openers are a good stocking stuffer and are available many places. One simple and inexpensive tool is a spring loaded scissors – the self sharpening ones are best. Kept in the kitchen these can be used to open packages (which is often a challenge). Holding the bowl still when mixing can be as simple as putting a damp towel under it, or using a nonslip piece of matting. Also there is nothing better than a truly sharp, easy to use knife with a handle that feels good in your hand. It is far better to have one really great knife than a large variety. Many chefs use only a medium size knife, paring knife, cleaver and a bread knife. Swedish knives, often used by meat cutters, have a vertical handle so you don’t have to bend your wrist. Just being aware of these tips can open your eyes to other possibilities. Lake City Timberwolves Fight for the Fish!
T
he Annual Fight for the Fish game is fast approaching as Lake City and Coeur d’Alene will again face off in the biggest basketball game of the year. Both schools will be getting pumped up by holding spirit weeks leading up to the boys and girls games on Friday, January 11th at Lake City. Tickets will go on sale to the public on game day however students will be able to purchase them in advance. Tickets are $3 dollars and no ASB cards, district passes, booster passes or IHSAA passed will be honored at the doors.
Lake City will be looking to avenge losses on both the girls and boys side. Last January The Vikings defeated the Timberwolves 55-31 in front of a packed Elmer Jordan Court. The Lake City girls didn’t fare much better as Coeur d’Alene took care of business 51-31. But as many will tell you anything can happen in a rivalry game and this year promises to be another good matchup and rowdy atmosphere. Both teams have some new faces so it will be up to the veterans to lead their teams to victory. The varsity girls tip off at 5:45pm and the boys will follow with a 7:30pm tip. Tickets are expected to go fast so get there early and cheer on your favorite team!

fter a long two days in Pocatello with over 500 competitors and close to 40 teams, the CDA High School Theatre Department won the state title!
We took 26 entries down to state where 17 entries went to semi-finals, 12 went to finals, and 4 entries took home individual titles. It was a close race; however, the professionalism and energy of our students made it all possible to take home our second title back-to-back. he fight for the Prairie Pig is heating up as Post Falls and Lakeland get ready to do battle not only on the courts but in the stands. The annual rivalry is more than just a basketball game; it’s also a spirit competition. Students in the crowd have just as much riding on the matchup as the players on the court. Despite losing both games last season, Lakeland will look to hold on to both the orange and green pigs. They’ll have to do well at the lip-sync dance routine, cheer show, song competition and of course be the loudest and proudest fans. If you don’t have a pair of earplugs, you might want to pick some up. The school that scores the most points in each competition will take the pigs home and proudly display them in the trophy case for another year. An estimated 1,600 people showed up last year and nearly blew the roof off the gym. The Post Falls boys have won 11 straight on the hardwood, but Lakeland has claimed the pigs 10 out of the 16 times they’ve played. Tickets go on sale to the public on Tuesday, December 18th. Tickets are $5. Both boys and girls games will be held at Post Falls on Thursday, December 20th. Tip off for the girls game is 5:15pm, boys tip is 7pm.

Christmas Dinner GATHER AROUND THE TABLE FOR PERFECTLY COOKED PRIME RIB
I
f there is one constant across the world it’s that food brings family and loved ones together. The holidays are a special time for families celebrating all sorts of traditions. It’s a time when people travel great distances to share in the spirit of giving and of great food. It’s a time to catch up with seldom seen relatives or a son or daughter back from their first semester of college. And it’s a time of shrimp cocktail, deviled eggs, frosted cookies, and plenty of other overindulging choices. A meal should never be stressful; in fact it should be the opposite. It’s a time when the TV gets shut off, the texting stops, the worries or work disappear, and loved ones gather for a good old fashion conversation. Tim and Noelle Branen, owners of Tim’s Special Cut Meats want everyone to have a happy holiday and a wonderful meal. Tim recommends prime rib as the centerpiece to any great meal. It is easy to cook, incredibly flavorful, and can feed large groups with relative ease. Below are recipes that Tim and his family enjoy and hope you will too!
Great Christmastime Recipies!
Holiday Prime Rib
Turn oven to 450 degrees. Place roast rib side down in pan and season with garlic powder and prime rib and roast seasoning. Sear for 15 minutes at 450 and then turn oven temp to 325. Continue cooking until internal temp is 120 for rare and 140 for medium. Check using a good internal meat thermometer. Once at your desired temp, take the roast out of the oven and let sit on counter for 15-20 minutes for juices to settle. The meat will continue to cook so don’t pull it out of the oven too late.
Something to Do With the Leftovers……… Leftover Blackened Prime Rib
Slice the roast into thick 1/2” or inch slices. Heat a skillet on medium high. Mix in bowl, a cup or two of bread crumbs depending on how much you are cooking, 2 tablespoons crushed dill seed (you can us more if you like this gives it flavor) and dash of pepper. Dip slices in an egg wash and then into bread crumb mixture. Melt butter in skillet and pan fry your steaks a couple minutes on each side just until heated through. eer fans can rejoice as the long awaited Trickster’s Brewing Company is open and ready to quench your thirst. Owner and Brewmaster Matt Morrow spent months perfecting his recipes and building his brand new brew house from the ground up. He is excited to bring another choice in craft beer to the Inland northwest. Trickster’s will have four standard ales and will brew special seasonal beers throughout the year. Now pouring in the taproom are Cougar Bay Blonde, an English Summer Ale, Bear Trap Brown, an English Brown Ale, Coyote Morning IPA, an American India Pale Ale, and Inspector Stonewall Amber, an American Amber Ale. The taproom is spacious and allows visitors to see the brewing process as it happens. You can sample each of the beers or sit down for a pint or two. Don’t forget your growler (64oz glass jug) so you can take some hand crafted ale home with you. If you don’t have one, don’t worry you can pick up an official Trickster’s Growler at the brewery. A famous art collector is walking through the city when he notices a mangy cat lapping milk from a saucer in the doorway of a store and he does a double take. He knows that the saucer is extremely old and very valuable, so he walks casually into the store and offers to buy the cat for two dollars. The Cartesian Diver BROUGHT TO YOU BY MOBIUS SCIENCE CENTER
T
his month at Mobius Science Center we have been playing with a scientific toy that has it’s roots in the mid 17th century. Named after Rene Descartes, the Cartesian Diver was probably invented by a student of the famous scientist Galileo Galilei! It is simple to make at home and is a great way to explore the principles behind buoyancy. You will need: 1 2L bottle with cap 1 disposable drinking straw Clear tape Paper clips Clay or small beads (for extra weight) Deep cup for testing buoyancy
Items You Will Need
Instructions: Clean out the bottle and remove the label. Cut the straw in half with scissors. Fold the cut straw in half and fasten it with a piece of tape (see pictures). Make sure the tape does not cover the open ends of the straw. This will be your diver. We now need to make the diver “neutrally buoyant”. Buoyancy is a measure of how an object floats, based on how much water it displaces. Neutral buoyancy is when an object neither floats nor sinks. We will accomplish this by fastening paper clips to the diver and testing its buoyancy in the deep cup full of water. We want the diver to float just at or below the surface, with the open ends of the straw facing down. If you have trouble making it neutrally buoyant, you can us a little piece of clay or a few beads as extra ballast.

Once the diver is neutrally buoyant in the cup, fill the 2 liter bottle to the brim with water, drop the diver in, and seal it with the cap. To make the diver sink, squeeze the bottle. When you release the pressure caused by squeezing, the diver should rise back to the surface. Explanation: The air trapped in the bent straw causes the diver’s buoyancy. When squeezed, the air in the bottle is compressed and the diver becomes negatively buoyant. Releasing the pressure allows the air to expand, making the diver buoyant again. More to Do: Experiment with different bottle sizes. If you use a small water bottle, do you have to squeeze it harder to make the diver sink? What if you don’t fill the bottle all the way?

“What’s next, Grandma?” Arianna asked.
“I can’t believe how fast the holidays are coming. It seems like we were just slicing that tasty turkey.” Arianna overheard her mom’s portion of a telephone conversation. “Who are you talking to?” Arianna whispered to her mom. “Grandma,” her mom mouthed. “Saturday?” her mom asked. “I’m not sure. Let me ask.” Turning to Arianna and Tyler, who was working a puzzle in the corner, she said, “Grandma wants to know if you would like to come to her home on Saturday to bake cookies.” “Awesome. Yes!” exclaimed Tyler. “Yummy yum yum! Yes, yes, yes,” exclaimed Arianna. “Um, as I think you heard, the kids would love to come over on Saturday,” their mom said into the phone. They settled on a time, and their mom promised to drive them. “You realize that I’ll want to eat some of the cookies, too,” their mom told them after hanging up the phone. *****

I’ll mix up the dough while you draw your idea.” “What fun!” Arianna said. “I love baking cookies at your home, Grandma.” Grandma Flynn pulled the last cookie sheet out of the oven and turned it off. “Why are you turning the oven off, Grandma?” Tyler asked. “I’ll turn it back on when we’re ready to start cooking the next batches,” she replied. “We’ll conserve electricity that way.” “I’m going to make a dog like Copper,” Tyler said, choosing a green crayon. “I’m going to make an arrowhead,” Arianna said, choosing a red crayon. They added dots and stripes and other fun designs on their pictures while Grandma Flynn’s mixer whirred under her skilled hands. “I’m all done mixing the dough,” she said. “How are the pictures coming?” “I’m almost done,” Tyler said.
“Bring the knife straight down,” Grandma Flynn instructed Tyler. Her hand covered his, which was gripping a table knife. “You’re doing great! I’m glad I got these rolls of pinwheel cookie dough ready before you got here so the two of you could help with the slicing and placing them on the pan.”
“Me, too,” Arianna said, intently coloring the edges of the arrowhead.
“Are these close enough together, Grandma?” Arianna asked as she placed the circles on the cookie sheet.
“I’m all done,” said Arianna. She stood up and placed the picture on the stove. “I know Mom will love it.” She sat back down at the table to watch Tyler finish his picture.
“Perfect!” Grandma Flynn responded. As Arianna filled the cookie sheets, Grandma Flynn popped them into the oven. Before long, the aroma of cookies baking filled the kitchen. Taking a pan out, she said, “As soon as these cool a bit, you can test them.” “Sure,” Tyler replied.
“I’ll be right back,” Grandma Flynn said. “When you’re done, just set them over there.” She waved her hand toward the counter as she left the kitchen.
“Didn’t Grandma take all of the cookies out of the oven?” Tyler asked Arianna. “I think I smell something burning.” They turned around and saw Arianna’s paper shrinking into a brown ball. “GRANDMA!” they yelled. “FIRE!”
