hat a lucky person I am to be able to spend most of my days in the company of dogs and humans who love their pet!
I find that people who love their dogs are fantastic people. They possess some of the same great qualities as dogs such as loyalty, obedience, friendliness (most of the time!) and usually know what they like to eat! Similar qualities, but different needs! Dogs! A whole different animal! All animals should be fed a ‘species appropriate’ diet. In the case of canines, a grain free food is best. Be a label reader with your pet’s food. Be watchful of words like by-product meal, animal or meat meal. Soluble fiber could actually be sawdust or peanut hulls. Corn has been linked to skin allergies, joint swelling and bloat in dogs, among other things. If you take care of your pet by feeding that all important ‘species appropriate’ diet, you will lessen many common medical issues and have a better chance of spending many quality years with your pet. tart your day with breakfast. Breakfast fills your “empty tank” to get you going after a long night without food and it can help you do better in school. Easy to prepare breakfasts include cold cereal with fruit and low-fat milk, whole-wheat toast with peanut butter, yogurt with fruit, whole-grain waffles or even last night’s pizza! Get Moving! It’s easy to fit physical activities into your daily routine. Walk, bike or jog to see friends. Take a 10-minute activity break every hour while you read, do homework or watch TV. Climb stairs instead of taking an escalator or elevator. Try to do these things for a total of 30 minutes every day.
Then cool-down with more stretching and deep breathing. Balance your food choices - don’t eat too much of any one thing. You don’t have to give up foods like hamburgers, french fries and ice cream to eat healthy. You just have to be smart about how often and how much of them you eat. Your body needs nutrients like protein, carbohydrates, fat and many different vitamins and minerals.
Foods aren’t good or bad. A healthy eating style is like a puzzle with many parts. Each part, or food, is different. Some foods may have more fat, sugar or salt while others may have more vitamins or fiber. There is a place for all these foods. What makes a diet good or Snack smart. hile visiting a senior in their home you may discover that their situation has changed since the last time you were there. These changes don’t automatically indicate that the individual needs more care but it’s important to be aware so that appropriate measures can be taken. Over 86% of seniors surveyed stated that they wanted to age in their own home. Keeping seniors healthy, happy, active and safe in their own homes is the key. Here are 10 signs that could indicate a senior might need more help at home. 1. A Change in Appearance or Condition of the Home—If mom never cared much about her house, the fact that it’s a little messier than usual might not indicate a problem. However, if the house was always spotless, a messy home might mean trouble is brewing. 2. Clutter—Piles of magazines or clothing could be an indicator that an older adult needs more help. 3. Dirty or Unkempt Clothing—Lack of interest in appearance can be a sign of depression in a senior. 4. Unpaid Bills—A pile of unpaid bills or correspondence is an alarming sign that could require a family caregiver to intervene immediately
in the best interest of a loved one. 5. Fresh Food Replaced with Junk Food—A senior who loses interest in cooking sometimes resorts to junk food. 6. Spoiled Food in the Fridge or Freezer—Spoiled food could be an early sign that a senior no longer has an appetite and is not eating properly. 7. Bugs or Rodents in the Home—An older adult who no longer can clean a home properly may be vulnerable to bugs and rodents. 8. Snowbowl AN EMINENTLY CHALLENGING MOUNTAIN It may feel provincial, but with 2,600 vertical feet of skiable terrain, Snowbowl, the local ski area for Missoula, is a hefty, eminently challenging mountain. T
he Lake City student body was awarded the Fish by a group of judges from the surrounding area. Tickets for the games were sold out and the games attracted an overflow crowd of 1,800. It was the ninth time in 14 games Lake City has won the fish. It has also been the 2nd time in two years for LC. “I’m happy for the school,” coach Jim Winger said. “You can’t imagine how much work both of these schools put in to make this happen. It’s an awesome thing.” The Viking boys outmanned the Timberwolves 55-31 and the Viking girls put a similar hurt on LC 51-31 in Inland Empire League games at Elmer Jordan Court.

HALICH 2011 ESPN/GATORADE & 5A IDAHO PLAYER OF THE YEAR. Chad Chalich, quarterback for the 5A State Champion Vikings Football team, has been named Idaho’s 2011 ESPN/Gatorade Player of the Year as well as the 5A Player of the year! Gatorade’s criteria in choosing the Player of the Year includes athletic production and impact in the 2011 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character. Chalich led the Vikings to their second 5A State Football Championship. He maintains a 3.52 GPA and has volunteered locally on behalf of the homeless and the Elderhelp of North Idaho Program. Congratulations!
CHS DRAMA WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP! The CHS Drama Department, under Drama teacher Jared Helm, captured the State Drama Championship December 4, 2011. The teacher of the earth science class was lecturing on map reading. After explaining about latitude, longitude, degrees and minutes the teacher asked, “Suppose I asked you to meet me for lunch at 23 degrees, 4 minutes north latitude and 45 degrees, 15 minutes east longitude...?”
The superintendent beamed broadly. “A wise father,” he said. “He was quite right not to let you go fishing on a Sunday. Did he explain why?” The little boy nodded. “Oh, yes sir. He said there wasn’t enough bait for the two of us.”
PET BILLS While waiting at the veterinarian’s office, I overheard two women chatting about their dogs. “What’s your dog’s name?” asked the first woman. “Well, we used to call her Pork Chop,” answered the second lady. “But after the vet bills we’ve had for her, we now call her Filet Mignon.”
DOG FIGHT A man walks into a bar one day and asks, “Does anyone here own that rottweiler outside?” “Yeah, I do!” a biker says, standing up. “What about it?” “Well, I think my chihuahua just killed him...” “What are you talkin’ about?!” the biker says, disbelievingly. “How could your little runt kill my rottweiler?” “Well, it seems he got stuck in your dog’s throat!”
