Buying Local Food SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT BY BUYING LOCAL FOOD

Think Local. Buy Local. Deal it Local.

D

o you know how far the apple in your kitchen traveled before you picked it up at the grocery store? According to the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, apples in American grocery stores typically travel 1,726 miles before reaching your kitchen! Just think about the fuel needed to transport produce like this across the country or across borders. Also think about the pollution generated by the vehicles carrying this produce.

F1 for Help

The impact on the environment is one issue, but we also have to worry about preservatives that are used to keep this apple nice and crispy during its very long journey to your grocery store. To keep produce fresh during the long haul across continents and oceans, produce companies have to use chemical preservatives. It is well documented that preservatives are hazardous to human health.

F1 for HELP

F1 for HELP is a locally owned and operated computer shop based in Rathdrum, Idaho. Our mission statement really sums up our work philosophy: “To serve small and medium sized business’s to help them achieve maximum potential by insuring that their computer systems are operational during business hours.” This means that we work around you and your schedule. With the proper access and appropriate permissions, a majority of the maintenance work that we can perform can be done after-hours which minimizes the amount of downtime for our clients. We do understand that unforeseen events happen which is why we offer phone support for quick questions and an on-site presence with a can do attitude.

So what can we do? Well, you can try your best to buy local produce whenever possible. Since produce from your local farms are traveling very short distances there is less pollution created in their transport. There is also less packaging and processing involved which also helps to lessen the amount of garbage we put into the environment and ourselves! It really is enjoyable to mix up your food shopping routine by purchasing your fresh produce and meats at your local farmers’ market. In many cases you can negotiate prices (which is fun). Also fellow shoppers are generally in a happier frame of mind when they’re perusing farmer’s booths than when they’re steering a shopping cart through crowded aisles at the grocery store. Find out the location of your nearest farmers’ market, note the dates that they are open and plan to be there bright and early to get the freshest, tastiest food choices of the day! Your family will thank you, you’ll be supporting your local economy and helping to save the environment. Make Beer, Make Wine

Great wine, great beer, great cheese, great experience! More and more people are discovering how fun and easy it is to craft premium quality wines, beers and cheeses that they can call their own. HEALTHY LIVING

What is the Main Cause of Stress? BROUGHT TO YOU BY LOVE YOUR LIFE CENTER

I

f I were to go out on the street and ask people what they thought the main cause of stress was, most of them would say it was things like money, work, bosses, kids etc. In fact they’d all be wrong. Sure, all these things can lead to us feeling stressed or anxious, but they don’t actually cause it. The real cause of most of our stress and most of our unhappiness is actually what we say to ourselves about our lives and the events in our lives. We all have underlying beliefs and expectations of how life in general and our life in particular “ought to be”. When things don’t go the way we think or believe they should, we tell ourselves that it is “wrong”, or “bad”, or “it shouldn’t be this way”, or we “can’t stand it”. As a result, we become angry, anxious, stressed or frustrated. Instead, if we begin by accepting things as they are, we then free ourselves to focus on what can be done, rather than wasting time and energy on focusing on how awful the situation is. Please understand that accepting something as it is does not mean that we are saying that it is okay. It just means that we are accepting the reality of the situation first and then figuring out if we can do anything about it. Sometimes there will be nothing we can do to change the situation. In this case, accepting it will at least give us some inner peace and free us to focus on things that we can do. The next, and perhaps harder part of this is to understand that even if someone else is to blame for a negative event in your life you and only you are responsible for how you react to and deal with that negative event. For example: if someone runs a red light and wrecks my car, it is clearly not my fault and I did nothing to deserve it—and I’m certainly not going to be

too happy about it. However, if I am not going to be victimized by this experience, I need to begin by accepting what has happened, move as quickly as I can from anger and blame and into problem solving mode. Now I can steer my thinking to getting beyond the situation, minimizing its impact on my life. The alternative would be to get stuck in the injustice of it all and enter a downward spiral of anger, blame and stress. Acceptance is only a first step, but it is the most important step we can take in coping with any situation in a way that will reduce our stress. It will also make a positive outcome much more likely. Why don’t you try monitoring yourself for a day or a week and see how much of the time you spend not accepting things as they are. Remember, you have the power to decide on how things are going to affect you. Dave Schmitz-Binnall has a Masters degree in Psychology and is an internationally certified hypnotherapist. Myofascial Release EFFECTIVE FOR MANY PHYSICAL CONDITIONS - KEY TO ENHANCED MOVEMENT

T

o understand this technique it is important to understand the fascial system. Myo, means muscle, and fascia (pronounced “fasha”) is the connective tissue. The fascia is a specialized system of the body that has an appearance similar to a spider’s web or a sweater. Fascia is very densely woven, covering and interpenetrating every muscle, bone, nerve, artery and vein as well as all of our internal organs including heart, lungs, brain and spinal cord. The most interesting aspect of the fascial system is that it is not just a system of separate coverings. It is actually one structure that exists from head to foot without interruption. In this way, you can begin to see that each part of the entire body is connected to every other part by the fascia, like the yarn in a sweater. Fascia also plays an important role in the support of our bodies, since it surrounds and attaches to all structures. These structures would not be able to provide stability without the constant pull of the fascial system. In fact, our bones can be thought of as tent poles, which cannot support the structure without the constant support of the guide wires (or fascia) to keep an adequate amount of tension to allow the tent (or body) to remain upright with proper equilibrium. Trauma, such as a fall, whiplash or surgery can cause tight areas in the fascia. This system is also affected by repetitive motions or just habitual poor posture over time, which have a cumulative effect. The changes caused in the fascial system influence the skeletal framework for our posture. The fascia can exert excessive pressure producing pain or restriction of motion, decreased flexibility and is a determining factor in our ability to withstand stress and strain.

Myofascial Release is a gentle, safe and highly effective, whole body, “hands on” approach. It allows us to look at each patient as unique with focus on the whole body rather than just the injured part. Often where we feel the pain, is not where the problem really is located. MFR utilizes varying pressure from heavy to light to eliminate pain and restore motion as well as deepens the relaxation response. Myofascial Release is used to treat acute pain due to accident or injury as well as chronic neck, back, sciatic pain. It is also used to treat arthritis, Fibromyalgia, sciatica, TMJ, post surgical scar and lymphedema, just to name a few. Myofascial Release or “MFR” is a very effective hands-on technique that provides sustained pressure into myofascial restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. It also allows the body to move to release holding patterns. Patients may be seen one-on-one with a therapist or may opt for co-treatments with two therapists. During these hands-on treatments therapists use may use other manual techniques and movement therapy. The patient is an active participant in the treatment program. Each patient is given a home program to maximize benefit from therapy. This promotes independence though education in proper body mechanics, enhancement of strength, flexibility, as well as postural and movement awareness. Coeur d’ Alene Hand Therapy and Healing Center specializes in Advanced Myofascial Release and manual therapy techniques. Call 208.664.2901 for more information or to receive a free consultation.

SENIOR FOCUS

Something for Seniors to Smile About BROUGHT TO YOU BY GARDEN PLAZA OF POST FALLS

A

generation ago, dentures and bridgework were all too common among U.S. seniors. Today, according to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans are keeping their natural teeth longer. In part, seniors can thank endodontists, the dentists who specialize in performing root canal treatment and saving natural teeth. Endodontists’ advanced training and access to cutting-edge technologies allow them to save older teeth that once were considered hopeless. As people age, the canals inside their teeth narrow, making tooth-saving procedures more difficult. Using new technologies, such as ultrasonics and operating microscopes, endodontists can locate even the smallest canals to remove inflamed pulp and nerves and preserve natural teeth. Digital imaging, which is used in place of traditional X-rays to take pictures of teeth, is another tool that significantly increases endodontists’ ability to find the cause of pain in even the narrowest root canal. “Endodontists are accustomed to working within a very small space,” says Dr. Marc Balson, D.D.S., president of the American Association of Endodontists. “Our background, which includes four years of dental school followed by two to three years of advanced training, allows us to perform root canal treatment efficiently on any patient.” During root canal treatment, the endodontist removes the inflamed or infected pulp (the soft tissue inside teeth), carefully cleans and shapes the inside of the canal (a channel inside the root), then fills and seals the space. A well done root canal is like a solid foundation in a house - it allows for further restorative work to be done on a tooth with a likelihood of long-term health and stability.

Endodontists’ training also helps them deal with seniors’ special medical needs. The same prescription medications that allow older Americans to lead healthier, more active lives can pose problems when it comes time to undergo dental procedures. Endodontists routinely conduct a thorough assessment of elderly patients’ medical histories in preparation for root canal treatment, so as to avoid harmful drug interactions and safely treat patients with high blood pressure and other chronic conditions. The most important advantage endodontists offer older patients is experience. On average, endodontists perform 25 root canal treatments each week, while general dentists perform two. This means that seeing an endodontist for root canal treatment is the healthiest way for seniors to avoid dentures, bridgework or artificial implants and preserve their smiles for a lifetime.

Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR LEGAL, INSURANCE AND INVESTMENT AFFAIRS

I

t’s that call that comes out of the blue, the call that you never saw coming. Bad news delivered by a friend over the phone usually starts with some hesitation in their voice. I remember the surreal feeling I had when the plant manager told me that my healthy husband had collapsed at work and was being taken to the emergency room. On that day things changed forever and the call that I never saw coming was just the start of what was to be one of the biggest challenges of my life. By the time I arrived to the hospital, my husband, John was being moved from the ER to intensive care, there was a flurry of activity to make the appropriate family notifications. Then while we waited in the intensive care unit, my mind went into overdrive. John was keeper of the family documents. He filed the legal documents like our power of attorney and will. He kept track of investments and insurance policies. He knew about the medical insurance policy and our long-term health care policy. John handled everything! As a nurse, both the rhythm and flow of the ICU were familiar to me. But suddenly taking charge of all our legal, insurance and investment affairs was overwhelming. Where would I start? Where was everything stored? What about the passwords, websites and documents? I knew some of the data was on the computer, some in a file drawer and some with an attorney. I knew enough like most of us, but what I needed was a single source, a central place where I could lay my hands on all our personal information, phone numbers, passwords, usernames, documents and policies. It was all overwhelming and only seemed to be getting worse with every fleeting thought.

As my husband started to slowly recover and the thought that I may lose him dissipated, my previous anxiety and fear morphed into a plan. A plan where I would help others prepare for life’s emergencies. I set out to create a practical, yet simple way to collect all the necessary information needed in times just like these. After a few years of planning and researching, I effectively designed a simple and practical workbook whereby all of “Life’s Stuff” could be organized in one place for anyone to access. Keep in mind what may be common knowledge to you would take an outsider considerable time to research. As a completed product, Life’s Stuff is a welcome gift for an estate executor attempting to follow instructions, for the first visit to an estate attorney and most importantly for your family. Each chapter has a separate area of focus making this an easy process to understand, follow and complete. Most of the information needed is easy to find and once your workbook is complete, you and your loved ones will feel the safety of knowing your family will be prepared for life’s – and – death’s emergencies. SMART Travel for the Budget Savvy BROUGHT TO YOU BUY THURMAN AND ASSOCIATES, INC.

T

he world of budget travel can be filled with excitement and appeal and in our expensive world today traveling on a budget is becoming more necessary if you want to travel at all. It is important to keep costs low when traveling, whether you are traveling solo seeing a foreign country for the first time or a family with your car filled with kids and luggage heading for the beach or an amusement park.

as two-for-one deals, free admission for children, special reduced admission days, even discounts on food and lodging. There are other ways to get great discounts. If you are in the military, a senior citizen or a member of an organization such as AAA, you will find that there are many discounts available to you. Most AAA offices sell discounted tickets for theme parks, museums and other attractions within driving distance, and most AAA offices sell discounted tickets to popular destinations like the Walt Disney World Resort, too. The secret to making the most of your travel budget is to research and take advantage of any discounts available.

If you want to go the lower cost route while traveling, it is definitely a good plan to generate a travel budget. Determine the approximate costs and prioritize the different portions of your trip, such as hotel, airfare, car rental, visiting attractions and sights, food, and gasoline. Once you have a good idea of what you want to spend on each part of your trip, then you need to begin shopping around for the best deals.

If you plan to drive your car on your trip, make sure you get it services so that it is in good condition before you leave. Something small like under-inflated tires or worn spark plugs or brake pads can affect your gas mileage and increase your fuel budget.

When it comes time for you to formulate a budget for travel, you should first prioritize by deciding what is most important to you and what you can cut back on. For example, while some travelers would rather spend a more on a higher class of accommodations, others would rather save money by staying at lower priced hotels or motels splurge on sightseeing or their food budget for the family.

A good tip for keeping your fuel spending under control is to invest in a map of your destination. It will keep you from getting lost and therefore wasting gas. Being able to find your way to and from the hotel or other destinations without trouble will make your vacation less stressful and less costly.

Once you have prioritized the elements of your trip, begin researching what the best deals are. Often, discounted admission rates on area attractions are the most common and easiest to find, since many theme parks, museums and other attractions run specials to draw tourists.

No matter how work to save money on your next vacation, planning a budget and adhering to it will let you enjoy your vacation more and worry about the costs less. What a Standard Homeowner’s Insurance Policy Covers BROUGHT TO YOU BY HARRIS/DEAN WESTERN STATES INSURANCE

hen shopping for home insurance, you should know about the six types of home insurance coverage offered in standard policy:

1. Coverage A- Dwelling 2. Coverage B- Other Structures on Your Property 3. Coverage C- Personal Property/Contents 4. Coverage D- Loss of Use 5. Coverage E- Personal Liability Protection 6. Coverage F- Medical Payments

Dwelling coverage protects against the damage and possible loss of your home’s structure in the event of a covered claim such as a hurricane, hail, lightening or fire. (Separate policies are needed for flood and earthquake insurance.) This portion of your policy pays to replace the structural components of your home.

Loss of Use coverage provides for your living expenses in the event that you cannot live in your home due to a covered claim. This type of coverage typically covers hotel and restaurant bills and other living expenses you may incur while your home is being repaired. Personal Liability Protection covers you in the event that a lawsuit is presented against you or covered family members for bodily injury or property damage. Your pets are also included in this portion of your policy protecting you against bodily harm or property damage that they may cause to others. Medical Payments coverage (often referred to as MedPay) helps cover medical expenses that you might be held responsible for due to an injury sustained on your property when there is no lawsuit.

Other Structures that are protected by a standard home insurance policy are detached garages and other detached buildings on your property. The typical coverage for other structures is 10% of your dwelling coveragealthough higher amounts may be purchased if necessary.

Have other questions about your Homeowner’s Insurance policy or would like a free competitive quote?

Personal Property coverage is included in a standard home insurance policy and protects your personal items and household contents in the event they are stolen or destroyed by fire, hurricane or other peril covered in your policy. Keeping Pets Healthy During Warm Weather PREVENT YOUR ANIMALS FROM GETTING AILMENTS

I

n the warm weather months, pet owners should take some precautions because it’s during these months that pets are more likely to be injured, suffer from heat stroke or be affected by a number of other ailments.

“Pets are treated more frequently in the warm months due to their increased exposure to the outdoors. Warm weather exposes pets to more insects, higher temperatures and bodies of water, such as swimming pools, lakes and oceans,” says Dr. Carol McConnell, director of veterinary education and services for Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI). “High temperatures can lead to sunburn and heatstroke. Exposure to swimming pools can lead to ear infections or-worse-case scenario-a pet accidentally falling into a pool and drowning.” Dr. McConnell says her company sees a significant spike in veterinary claims during the warmer months. In February of 2005, for instance, her company paid on 12 claims that involved a pet stepping on an object such as glass and injuring its paw. That number jumped to 76 claims in June and 87 in July. Some of these injuries most likely required surgery, which averages about $574 for canines and $337 for cats. Dr. McConnell suggests offsetting those costs by keeping a watchful eye on your pet and by purchasing pet insurance. “Protecting your dog or cat with a pet health insurance policy is not only a smart decision prior to warm weather months, but all year round,” she explains. Many company’s insurance plans cover dogs, cats, birds and exotic pets for thousands of medical problems and costly procedures relating to accidents, illness or injury. Optional vaccination and routine care coverage are available as well.

SMART MONEY

Geothermal Heating & Cooling System LIKE PLANTING A MONEY TREE IN YOUR YARD

W

e’ve all heard that money doesn’t grow on trees. True, but maybe that’s just a technicality. What if you found a way to put your money to work for you by investing it underground? No, not a secret black market. We’re talking about ground source heat pumps - also known as “geothermal” heating & cooling systems. Confused? Let’s explain.

a geothermal system can achieve 400% to 500% efficiency. Plus, unlike furnaces, they provide cooling in the summer and even generate free hot water for much of the year. Geothermal units also have a much longer life cycle (20-25 years) than conventional furnaces (10-15 years) and the loop field can last up to 100 years. The energy savings can be quite significant over time. Despite higher up-front costs (which are partially offset by tax credits and utility company rebates), investing in geothermal can easily outperform money markets, mutual funds, and other investment options. Take a look at the chart to the left for an example of how geothermal can be a wise long-term financial investment – kind of like planting a money tree in your yard!

Heating and cooling collectively account for 56% of the energy used in a typical home, so when you as a homeowner look for ways to save money, the greatest impact you can make is by upgrading to a high-efficiency HVAC system. And a geothermal system is without a doubt the most efficient way to heat and cool a home, potentially saving up to 70% on energy bills. How do they work? Many people aren’t aware that the temperature below ground remains a near-constant 50° all year long. Ground source heat pumps are able to tap into this free energy by circulating a water-based solution through an underground “loop system”, providing your home with central heating & cooling. Because geothermal systems are designed to transport existing heat instead of creating it, they require a mere fraction of the energy that other systems consume and therefore have significantly lower operating costs. By comparison a new furnace might be 95% efficient, while

INDEPENDENCE DAY

Independence Day WHEN INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS FIRST BEGAN

W

hile the traditional 4th of July Holiday is to celebrate the anniversary of the declaration of the United States’ independence from England, it is interesting to note that is not when Independence Day celebrations first began. Even more interesting to note is that even though the United States celebrates it’s independence from England on that day; the holiday itself is largely based on English traditions. You may not know that during the sixteenth century there were many political and regions debates raging, and a lot of discontent existed in the British Isles. During this time, the British people started using both official and unofficial anniversary dates to make their own political statements and show their alliances. They did this by having parades and feasting, which ultimately was to show other people who their alliances were with. When the colonizers left the British Empire, this tradition carried across the ocean. When discontent began to spread, these events were used as a means of protest which allowed the colonizers to show their political affiliations and messages based on their parades and dinners. It was all simply for show. Whenever there was a large parade, feast or other event happening, people often showed up simply to see what was going on. In this day, the large groups of people were seen as supporting whatever political opinion was being promoted – whether they truly did or not.

Modern day 4th of July festivities now include: parades, feasts, festivals and other large gatherings of people. Often patriotic songs are played and people take a nice relaxing day off to enjoy simply living here in the United States. Many festivals and feasts are head in town parks. This allows the children to run free and play, while the adults enjoy a meal of largely BBQ and other picnic foods. Today some of the most popular foods for the 4th of July holiday are BBQ hamburgers and hotdogs, corn on the cob and various macaroni and potato salads.

When the Declaration of Independence was printed, a staged celebration was created and the day was to be the celebration of independence from England, though no one ever did anything official for the day to become a holiday. Because the crowds were so large, it was assumed that the colonizers were interested in separating from the English and the movement proceeded. There were many original festivals to celebrate the In addition to the celebrations was the addition of fireworks. THE ADVENTURES OF THE FLYNN TWINS Part 1: Arianna’s Discovery By Jan St. George

yler and Arianna had been marking off the days on their calendar until, finally, it was Saturday. Their mom had promised them a trip to the beach for the afternoon. “Do you have the towels, Arianna?” Mom asked.

“I don’t know,” Mom replied. “It’s an artifact, and is part of a local tribe’s heritage. I’ll have to make a few phone calls next week to find out who officially owns it. A tribe might have first rights to it.”

“Yes, even Ty’s new Batman one.”

“But I found it,” Arianna said.

“I have the sand toys Grandma Flynn bought at Whiz Kids,” Tyler added.

“What have you got there, lady?” An older man with bristly grey whiskers suddenly appeared, hovering over the twins’ mom. His long shadow rippled over the sand. Arianna gave a shiver, her eyes darting from her mom to this stranger.

“And I have the sunscreen, so I think we’re all set,” said Mom. “Let’s go build some sand castles.”

This is similar to Arianna’s arrowhead.

After a loooong drive, Tyler and Arianna raced out of the car and onto the warm sand. They built a tall tower, being careful not to get too close to the lapping water.

“My children found a peculiar rock, sir. Nothing important. You know how kids always end up with a few special rocks after each beach visit.” Their mom slipped the arrowhead into her pocket.

“I’m going to dig a moat around the tower,” said Tyler.

“Humph,” said the stranger. “I’d be happy to see if it’s anything unique.”

“I’ll sift the sand to make a smooth garden area,” Arianna said.

“Thank you, but it’s time for us to go home. Let’s get your things, kids, and we’ll be on our way.”

The deeper Tyler dug, the more water filled up the moat. Arianna’s pile of soft sand was growing, as well as her discarded pile of rocks. “Ouch!” she exclaimed. “That hurt!” She looked down at a funny-shaped rock in her sieve. “Ty, this rock poked me.”

?

Tyler examined it, turning it one way and then the other in his palm. “It’s shaped like a triangle. Let’s show Mom.”

Did You Know? An artifact is a humanmade object that has archaeological or cultural interest.

?

“Can we keep it?” Arianna asked.

“Mom! Mom!” they shouted as they scrambled across the squishy sand. Their mom dropped the book she was reading. “What’s wrong?” she asked. “Ari found something,” Tyler said, handing the rock to their mom. “It looks like an arrowhead,” Mom said. “Native Americans would attach this sharp pointed tip to an arrow.”

Can you draw your own arrowhead? Draw one below:

“But Mom,” Tyler started to whine until he saw his mom’s pale face. “Let’s go, Ari.” He tugged at her hand and led her back to their sand tower. Their mom followed closely behind. Tyler could feel the stranger’s gaze on them, but when he turned around, the stranger looked away and started walking slowly down the beach. “I don’t like that man,” said Arianna. “He gives me the creeps.” As his mom backed out of the parking spot, Tyler saw the stranger leaning against a speed limit sign. “He must have back-tracked while we were packing up,” Tyler realized. Looking at their car, the stranger wrote something down in a tablet. “I wonder what he is writing,” thought Tyler. “I hope we never see him again.” (To Be Continued)

Coeur d’Alene High School Highlights DISTINGUISHED YOUNG WOMAN WINNER AND THE 2012 SENIOR PARTY By Ben Woolley—Online Editor

By Emily Lowder—A&E Editor

C

HS juniors Kylee Solberg and Hailey Peters-Clark won first and second in the Distinguished Young Woman competition at Lake City High on May 24th. “I am very excited and honored to have won the title,” Solberg said. Solberg placed in the interview, fitness, self expression and talent events of the contest, and Peters Clark placed in the interview and talent portion as well. The twonight, Dr. Seuss themed event featured 23 female junior students from Coeur d’Alene. The judges scored and interviewed each student, and at the end of it all Solberg came out on top. “I prepared and put in the time, but anybody could have won,” Solberg said. “There was a lot of talent.” Solberg won $2600 in scholarships, and many other young women received scholarship money as well for placing in the variety of different categories. Solberg’s talent was ballet dance, which she has been doing for numerous years. The talent portion was the last event, which she described as an “exhilarating finale” for herself. “It was a major adrenaline rush, but I wasn’t nervous since dance is practically second-nature to me,” Solberg said. Next fall during the first week of October, Solberg will compete in Idaho Falls against the winners from all of Idaho. The top three finalists will also be in the Fourth of July parade.

he class of 1962 donated a substantial amount of money to the senior class of May 18th, 2012. The money will be used for the senior party tickets as scholarships.

Tickets to the senior party cost $75 and some seniors have exhibited concern about the cost. Qualifications for the scholarship are that the student who asks for aid must be on free or reduced lunch, or provide proof of financial need. “It’s a completely selfless act,” Abby White, senior counselor, said of the donation to the class of 2012. “They’re giving them a memory, something to hold onto and maybe instill that value of service in the senior class.” The Senior Party will take place immediately following graduation. It will include free activities at Triple Play such as a cash booth, casino, raffle, food and photos. Every senior in attendance will leave with a gift, courtesy of the Senior Party Committee. Members of the 1962 class were present at 2pm on May 18th to give the money to the Senior Party Committee in the main office. Members of the 1962 class included Nelda Croot, Bob Stover, Skip Tile, Gary Jorgenson, Sandy Green, Linda Richey, and Jim Duffield. “We wanted to do something for the class fifty years behind us and we finally were able to do that,” Duffield said. “We have really fond memories of CHS.”

North Idaho College Really BIG Raffle COMMUNITY SPONSORS RALLY TO SUPPORT NIC’S REALLY BIG RAFFLE

N

orth Idaho College has coordinated one of the region’s most successful and popular annual fundraisers for 19 years. The draw is the really BIG prizes, including a $250,000 brand new home. But the true secret to the Really BIG Raffle’s continued success, even in a difficult economy, is the tremendous support from local businesses and community members, according to NIC Foundation Executive Director, Rayelle Anderson. “This year is no exception as the event has already received a record number of sponsors providing funding, materials and labor,” Anderson said. “This fundraiser would not be possible without the generous support of our business community as well as the community members who support the fundraiser each year through ticket purchases.” Edge Home Roofing, a Coeur d’Alene-based company owned by Royce and Michele Driggs, stepped in to sponsor all of the roofing materials and labor for the grand prize home this year. “We choose to sponsor the Really BIG Raffle not only because we support higher education, but also feel that the event is a benefit to our community,” Royce said. “Edge Home Roofing’s goal is to unite the community as a whole by bringing local businesses together. If we work together, we will make it together.” North Idaho College Carpentry Instructor Dave McRae said that Edge Home Roofing’s contribution was not only in materials, but in the education of his students who use the Really BIG Raffle project as a learning laboratory for practical application of carpentry skills. “Not only did Edge Home Roofing provide materials and labor, they really went the extra mile and brought each student up to demonstrate their best practices and were happy to answer any

questions the students had,” McRae said. In addition to Edge Home Roofing, the Really BIG Raffle is supported by more than 25 sponsors this year including title sponsor Greenstone Homes, and further major sponsors Stock Building Supply and Washington Trust Bank. All proceeds of the Really BIG Raffle support student and program needs at North Idaho College. Regional outlets are now selling tickets for North Idaho College’s Really BIG Raffle drawing for a chance to win a brand new $250,000 Coeur d’Alene home; $20,000 car; $10,000 boat; $3,500 vacation package and $2,000 shopping spree. Only 5,000 raffle tickets will be sold prior to the July 11th drawing at $100 each. This year’s home is a single-level three bedroom, two bath with nearly 1,900 square feet of living area. The plan includes a vaulted living room with fireplace, an open kitchen with stainless steel appliances and granite counters, master suite with jetted tub and a full unfinished basement. The home is under construction at 2748 Sorbonne Drive, Coeur d’Alene. Neurofeedback is an alternative natural therapy that is non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical, and requires almost no effort on the part of the trainee. Also known as EEG Biofeedback It can train brainwaves to develop and utilize more efficient neural pathways. In doing so the brain is taught to get “in the zone” and function at peak performance levels. Since the brain is our master regulator, quality of life may be improved in a variety of ways. Studies have shown statistically significant improvement in pain, sleep, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, flashbacks, nightmares, seizures, migraines, memory loss. Evidence also supports improvements in behaviors associated with attentiveness, impulsivity, resistance, distractibility, even IQ is often improved. UCLA studies show that, coupled with Rehab, Counseling, or a 12 step program Neurofeedback training can reduce the incidence of addiction relapse by up to 77%. Under a Doctor’s supervision some are able to reduce or eliminate the need for certain medications. Neurofeedback trains the brain to improve mental focus, peak performance, and quality of life for students, athletes, professionals, seniors, and anyone who wants to reduce their stress, think more clearly, and perform better in their daily life. The Inflatable Pontoon Boat An Incredible Boating Value

Article by Dan Howard

I

f you fish from shore, I am sure you share a desire to someday fish from a boat. The fishing opportunities open up dramatically when you have a boat. Shore anglers are restricted to public access areas that seem to be harder to find these days. Boats allow dramatically increased access enhancing your fishing experience. For many anglers a boat just does not fit into the family budget. If this is your situation, I would highly recommend you check out the inflatable pontoon boat. This boat can be purchased for as little as $250 and offer the angler an incredible value for the money. Unlike the inflatable boats that were available when I grew up, the pontoon boat is designed for the fisherman. There are numerous features that should interest the modern day angler. The boats are lightweight so they can be carried short distances with relatively little effort. Short distance portages or carrying the boat from your transport vehicle to the water is relatively easy. Most anglers prefer to maintain the boat in the assembled configuration rather than deflating and unassembling it after each use. Transporting the boat assembled will require some sort of transport vehicle. The boat usually will fit in the back of a pickup or on a small utility trailer so if you already have either of these items, transporting the boat to the water will not require added expense. I have two of these boats and hang both of them from the ceiling of my garage. I keep them in the assembled configuration with the tubes slightly deflated to accommodate temperature changes. I can easily drop the boat into my pickup and off to the water I go. When I return home, I simply lift the boat to the hooks on the ceiling and they are stored once again. Most models have some sort of an anchoring system. The model I have is fully rigged with an automated system. The anchor controls are right in front of me and easy to use with the anchor rope routed through the frame to the rear where the anchor is located. A slight tug releases the anchor and I simply replace the rope into the cleat once anchored. I don’t have to carry a heavy anchor with me. The system uses a bag that you fill with rocks. Genius! Pontoon boats use oars as a system of propulsion and some are fitted with a small transom for mounting an electric motor. These systems require a robust and well designed frame. A well designed frame offers flexibility in oarlock and transom placement. The ability to move the transom from one side of the boat to the other accommodates both left and right handed anglers. Moving the oarlocks forward and back accommodates taller and shorter anglers. Foot rests should also be adjustable to the angler’s height. Look for these features when shopping.

For the boat to perform well, it needs to be properly inflated. When you put your boat into the water, the water will cool the air in your tubes reducing its volume and pressure reducing the effectiveness the oar system. Most boats only recommend 2-5lbs of pressure. That is not very much! You will need some sort of manual portable pump on board the boat so that the air pressure can be adjusted. Be careful not to overinflate! The storage on pontoon boats is abundant. Most models provide more than adequate room for tackle, lunch and other items. Of course, the larger models will provide more storage. If you are planning on taking tents and other camping equipment you will probably want a larger model. I believe that the pontoon boat was originally designed for fly fishing and these boats are well configured for this. Many come with fly line trays and special locations for storing flies etc. If you are wondering about the durability of these boats I can tell you that they seldom experience rips, tears or holes of any kind. The capabilities of pontoon boats are really unbelievable and it is really a great value. Check one out. I believe you will be impressed.

ACTIVITIES AND FUN

PHOTOGRAPHER

Larry was a photographer for the N.Y. Times, and was scheduled to meet a plane on the runway to take him on a job. “Hit it,” said Larry climbing into the first plane he saw on the runway. The pilot took off, and was soon in the air. “OK,” said Larry, “fly low over the trees over there, I want to take a few pictures.” “What do you mean?” asked the pilot. Larry looked at the pilot and answered a little annoyed, “I need to take some pictures for the N.Y. Times, so please…..” There was a long pause, before the pilot asked in a shaky voice, “you mean you’re not my pilot instructor?”

WHOOPS!

Marvin, was in the hospital on his death bed. The family called Marvin’s Preacher to be with him in his final moments. As the Preacher stood by the bed, Marvin’s condition seemed to deteriorate, and Marvin motioned for someone to quickly pass him a pen and paper. The Preacher quickly got a pen and paper and lovingly handed it to Marvin. But before he had a chance to read the note, Marvin died. The Preacher feeling that now wasn’t the right time to read it put the note in his jacket pocket. It was at the funeral while speaking that the Preacher suddenly remembered the note. Reaching deep into his pocket the Preacher said “and you know what, I suddenly remembered that right before Marvin died he handed me a note, and knowing Marvin I’m sure it was something inspiring that we can all

gain from. With that introduction the Preacher ripped out the note and opened it. The note said “HEY, YOU ARE STANDING ON MY OXYGEN TUBE!”

ONE LETTER MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE

An Illinois man left the snow-filled streets of Chicago for a vacation in Florida. His wife was on a business trip and was planning to meet him there the next day. When he reached his hotel he decided to send his wife a quick email. Unfortunately, when typing her address, he missed one letter, and his note was directed instead to an elderly preacher’s wife whose husband had passed away only the day before. When the grieving widow checked her email, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor in a dead faint. At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen: Dearest Wife, Just got checked in. Everything prepared for your arrival tomorrow. P.S. Sure is hot down here.
