WHY LOCAL?
W
hat does it mean to buy local? Some may think that your just lining the pockets of the local business owners, more to their bottom line. Although the bottom line is always important in business its not the only thing that matters. Buying local means so much more not only for the local businesses but for the community as a whole. There is no question that local businesses run by locals have a certain appeal and allure that businesses outside of our surrounding community just don’t have. Whether it be that friendly smile behind the counter greeting you on a personal level or a posting of a local event that you just can’t miss out on, the comfort level of visiting the local stores can’t be duplicated anywhere else. And beyond that, local businesses have incredibly unique and personal products at competitive pricing. One of the biggest motivators we all should have when it comes to making a purchase locally is that a high percentage of that purchase does go directly back into our community. Whether its infrastructure, parks, improvements, or the such, local business continue to help our community thrive. Establishing a “Health Savings Account”
Stress Management: Key to Health & Wellness
START TODAY WITH SMALL, SIMPLE STEPS
BY DAVE SCHMITZ-BINNALL
T
he intention of this article is to enroll others in the possibility of a lifetime of health and vitality. I don’t think people realize that dis-ease rarely happens overnight. It’s not like you go in for your annual physical and suddenly you “have” diabetes, obesity, cancer, heart disease, or any other condition. Dis-ease is often years in process before becoming obvious. Because our medical system is focused primarily on managing dis-ease, people often go beyond medical establishments for assistance in preventing dis-ease. Learning what contributes to dis-ease and taking actions to foster health is imperative to longterm health and vitality. In the presence of others struggling with dis-ease, I’ve been left wondering how my biology can write a different biography so I won’t walk that same path. I ask, “What I can do today to create a future of health, and how do I do it?” The possibility I imagine is a lifetime of health, full of grace and vitality. So I created an imaginary “health bank account” which works just like a financial bank account. My “deposits” are the things I do for the health--not the disease--of my body. My “withdrawals” are the things I do that work against that intention. When I’ve saved enough and invested wisely, from time to time I can make significant withdrawals and my health won’t suffer as it would have had I not saved up. In my mid-twenties I had a rash of seemingly unrelated health issues which eventually suppressed my immune system to the point of having to choose a downward spiral or wake up to my life and change. I chose to change. After five years of making small changes which contributed to my health savings account, I whole-heartedly undertook a major year’s commitment of boosting my immune system by following The Body Ecology Diet, supplemented with exercise, hydrotherapy (sauna/pool), yoga, meditation and massage, all while getting my new career established. These were the “deposits” that every cell in my body craved. By the age of 30 I had managed to build a health bank account which not only settled a substantial past debt but also carved out a significant future. Its success was dependent on me having an honest, internal sense of where my health bank account stood at any given moment, managing it with great care and commitment towards reserve, and being willing to make life style changes that supported its prosperity. Growing your health bank account will yield more for your efforts if dis-ease hasn’t yet presented itself, but don’t let your current health issues thwart your attempts on establishing your account! Just like creating a financial future, having a health savings account can start today with small, simple steps. Look around you...listen within you...your own small, simple steps are waiting to help you foster your health. Develop this kind of selfawareness and take actions towards health...then start filling out your deposit slips! In no time you’ll be developing your own health savings account. Stay tuned for future articles with some simple steps you can take to contribute to your health savings account. In the meantime visit my website at www.wholebodysynergy.com for more tips and information.

A
bout three years ago I had the brilliant, though not very original, idea that I would open a stress management clinic. On the face of it, the plan was a “no-brainer”. After all, it was obvious that people were struggling more and more with the stress of just keeping body and soul together. I was continually meeting business people and other professionals who were feeling hopeless, burned out, or were sick as a result of the stress they were under. All I had to do was offer some classes on how to manage stress, coupled with a little individual coaching and people would be lining up round the block, desperate to take advantage of my wonderful program. We put together a couple of ‘pilot’ programs to test this out and two things happened. Firstly, hardly anyone showed up. Secondly, as we designed the classes, we discovered that stress management is about much more than learning to relax. Why did so few people show up? I don’t think most of us are aware of what it really means to truly manage our stress, or how massive an improvement in our lives, our health, and our happiness real stress management can bring. This is what I mean when I say that stress management is about more than just learning to relax. I like to think of total stress management as having two parts, even though there are obvious overlaps. 1. ‘External’: Activities that we can do or learn to do that help us to relax and feel less stressed e.g. playing a round of golf, yoga, meditation, relaxation exercises, listening to music, massage, exercise, organizing and prioritizing our lives, going for a walk etc. 2. ‘Internal’: Changing what we say to ourselves about things that cause us stress, especially those things over which we have no control. Learning to develop inner peace. Taking the time to center ourselves in our spirituality, values, our vision for our lives, and what is really important to us. In this way, learning to manage our stress is actually learning to love our life – even when things aren’t going the way we’d like them to go. This doesn’t mean that we will be happy all the time, but it does mean that we will be able be at peace with our lives and to make the most of them all the time. This may seem impossible to you right now but, over the course of the next few articles, I hope to show you that not only is it possible but also that you can do this for your self. As we work our way through the steps we can all take towards a less stressful and happier life, I hope it will become clear first, that stress management is an essential and fundamental core factor in our health and wellness; and second, that we are actually doing all of the things that we need to do in order to create health and wellness in our lives. Indoor Air Quality - There is Something in the Air FIVE WAYS TO BREATHE EASY THIS SPRING
N
ow that the last few weeks of winter are finally winding down, it’s time to think about warmer weather, opening the windows, and of course doing some spring cleaning. Speaking of cleaning, have you stopped to consider how clean the air is within your home? You might be surprised to learn that the air you and your family breathe each day may contain pollutants such as: • Pollen • Mold • Volatile Organic Compounds • Dust Mites • Pet Dander • Smoke & Dust Over time this can negatively affect your health in a number of ways, including aggravated allergies, increased chance for asthma attacks via airborne triggers, and illness caused by reactions to poisonous toxins and bacteria in the air. Here are 5 ways you can stay healthy by maintaining high indoor air quality in your home: 1. Cleaning Your Air Conditioner – One of the best things you can do is to clean your air conditioner inside and out on a regular basis. A properly maintained AC will not only help keep your air clean (and you healthy), but the system will also function more efficiently and last longer, thus saving you money. 2. Replace Your Air Filters – Changing or cleaning out your air filters regularly is one of the easiest and most important parts of air conditioner and furnace maintenance. These air filters are your number one line of defense against all manner of indoor air pollutants, but
if they become saturated, they can no longer do their job. 3. Duct Cleaning – Air ducts circulate your air throughout your home and happen to also be a very attractive place for dust, pollen, mold and other contaminants to collect. Every few years it’s important to have your ducts professionally cleaned to ensure they aren’t harboring dangerous contaminants that can spread throughout your home. How long since you’ve had your ducts cleaned? Have you ever? 4. Humidifiers – Proper humidity balance not only means improved comfort, but it also helps to minimize dust problems. Low humidity leads to more dead skin and dust in the house, while high humidity can promote the development of dust mites. 5. Electronic Air Cleaners – An electronic air cleaner can remove up to 99.98% of airborne allergens from all the air that is heated or cooled, making it 100 times more effective than a 1” filter. For more information about how you can improve the air quality in your home, call R&R Heating & Air Conditioning at 208.765.9355 or visit www.randrheating.com.

SENIOR FOCUS
Call it Anything But Exercise FIVE SIGNS YOUR SENIOR IS BECOMING A COUCH POTATO AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT
E
xercise is the dirty word that often turns the elderly into couch potatoes and there appear to be plenty out there. Fear of exercise can keep seniors with arthritis and other aches and pains from leading the active lifestyles they may have enjoyed in their younger years. But simple daily activities such as a trip to the senior center or a brisk walk on a nice day can help keep seniors young and vital well into their elderly years. 1. Here are some signs your senior may becoming a couch potato and practical ways seniors can incorporate activity into their lives. 2. She doesn’t go out anymore. Check with her doctor and if she’s healthy, help her reconnect with old friends or make new ones at a senior center or age friendly fitness facility. 3. He’s watching television whenever you call. Plan a regimen of standing and walking exercises during commercials. 4. She seems weak or loses her balance. Ask a doctor to make sure there are no medical conditions or medications that are causing her to fall. Then log on to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website at www.cdc.gov and check out “Growing Stronger Longer” for tips on gaining strength. 5. He complains about not sleeping well. Schedule a visit to the doctor to make sure nothing is wrong, then help him develop a plan that incorporates more activities into his day. 6. She has problems taking care of her home. Consider hiring a professional caregiver to serve as a companion and provide assistance around the house. Rising Popularity of Roth IRA as Retirement Vehicle ROTH IRAS CATCHING UP TO THEIR OLDER COUNTERPART
R
oth IRAs are quickly catching up to their older counterpart, the traditional IRA. About 19.5 million U.S. households owned Roth IRAs in 2010, compared with 38.5 million households who owned traditional IRAs. But the Roth IRA has been in existence only since 1998, while the traditional IRA has been around since 1974. What’s fueling the growth of this retirement vehicle? Americans may be attracted not only by the tax advantages offered by the Roth IRA, but by the flexibility it may offer.
of IRAs. Eligibility to contribute to a Roth IRA phases out at higher modified adjusted gross income levels. When Can You Make Contributions? You can make contributions to a Roth IRA for a year at any time during the year or by the due date of your return for that year (not including extensions). This means that most people can make contributions up to April 15. For example, you can start or make 2011 Roth IRA contributions until April 15th, 2012. Understanding limits, tax advantages, eligibility, contributions, conversions, etc. can be a daunting task. For more information and a no cost no obligation review, please contact:
Consider the Trade-Offs: Taxes: The main difference between a Roth IRA and a traditional IRA is that Roth IRA contributions are made with after-tax dollars, whereas contributions to a traditional IRA may be tax deductible. The difference when you withdraw your money, however, is that qualified distributions from a Roth IRA are free of federal income tax if you’ve satisfied the requirements. By contrast, distributions from a traditional IRA are taxed as ordinary income. (Roth IRA distributions may be subject to state income taxes.)

Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR LEGAL, INSURANCE AND INVESTMENT AFFAIRS
I
t’s that call that comes out of the blue, the call that you never saw coming. Bad news delivered by a friend over the phone usually starts with some hesitation in their voice. I remember the surreal feeling I had when the plant manager told me that my healthy husband had collapsed at work and was being taken to the emergency room. On that day things changed forever and the call that I never saw coming was just the start of what was to be one of the biggest challenges of my life. By the time I arrived to the hospital, my husband, John was being moved from the ER to intensive care, there was a flurry of activity to make the appropriate family notifications. Then while we waited in the intensive care unit, my mind went into overdrive. John was keeper of the family documents. He filed the legal documents like our power of attorney and will. He kept track of investments and insurance policies. He knew about the medical insurance policy and our long-term health care policy. John handled everything! As a nurse, both the rhythm and flow of the ICU were familiar to me. But suddenly taking charge of all our legal, insurance and investment affairs was overwhelming. Where would I start? Where was everything stored? What about the passwords, websites and documents? I knew some of the data was on the computer, some in a file drawer and some with an attorney. I knew enough like most of us, but what I needed was a single source, a central place where I could lay my hands on all our personal information, phone numbers, passwords, usernames, documents and policies. It was all overwhelming and only seemed to be getting worse with every fleeting thought.
As my husband started to slowly recover and the thought that I may lose him dissipated, my previous anxiety and fear morphed into a plan. A plan where I would help others prepare for life’s emergencies. I set out to create a practical, yet simple way to collect all the necessary information needed in times just like these. After a few years of planning and researching, I effectively designed a simple and practical workbook whereby all of “Life’s Stuff” could be organized in one place for anyone to access. Keep in mind what may be common knowledge to you would take an outsider considerable time to research. As a completed product, Life’s Stuff is a welcome gift for an estate executor attempting to follow instructions, for the first visit to an estate attorney and most importantly for your family. Each chapter has a separate area of focus making this an easy process to understand, follow and complete. Most of the information needed is easy to find and once your workbook is complete, you and your loved ones will feel the safety of knowing your family will be prepared for life’s – and – death’s emergencies. HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY
Saint Patrick’s Day THE HOLIDAY WHERE EVERYONE IS IRISH
S
t. Patrick’s Day is a holiday which celebrates Saint Patrick. Saint Patrick was one of the patron saints of Ireland credited with spreading the Catholic religion to many areas of Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day takes place on the 17th day of March each year, which is the day which Saint Patrick died. St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland with many businesses being closed on the day. In other parts of the world, especially the US and Canada, it is widely celebrated but is not an official government holiday. St. Patrick’s Day is a holy day of obligation for Roman Catholics in Ireland. Interestingly enough, occasionally the church authorities move the date of the holiday because of its clash with other holy days. In 2008 this is the case, and it shall be moved to March 15th to avoid Holy Monday.
wearing a shamrock on St. Patrick’s Day, it means that you can claim good luck or blessings on that day and for the rest of the year. In addition to the shamrock, many people believe that the cute little fictitious Leprechaun character can bring you good luck. For this reason many people wear leprechaun pins and other memorabilia on St. Patrick’s Day as well as a shamrock. One of the fun and very popular traditions which goes along with St. Patrick’s Day is the consumption of green ale. Many bars and pubs add green food coloring to their beer on the holiday to serve to their customers. In addition to the green ale, many people also indulge in Irish Cream and Irish Whisky on the day as well. For the kids, a nice green lemonade or 7UP make great non-alcoholic alternatives.
Catholics around the world will start off their St. Patrick’s Day with a mass service which is held to signify the holiday. Here in the United States, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated by everyone being of Irish decent for the day. The day has become more of a secular holiday than one of religion. Here in the United States St. Patrick’s Day has taken on more of a meaning of celebrating the beginning of spring. This goes along with the tradition of wearing green on the day, because green is both the color of Ireland as well as the color which signifies life and growth. It is said that you will be lucky for the coming spring if you wear green on the holiday. Amazingly, St. Patrick’s Day began being celebrated here in the United States with a parade in Queens New York in 1737, well before the Revolutionary War. Since that day, parades are a very popular way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Many people wear a shamrock on the holiday to signify good luck. However, the roots of this tradition, it is said, come from St. Patrick using a shamrock to explain to the pagans the concept of the Holy Trinity. In the Catholic Religion, the Holy Trinity is the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, which Christians know all stem from the same God. The three leaves of the shamrock all connected to the same stem were used to explain this concept to the pagans. If you are

Helping Kids and Pets Develop “Pawsitive” Relationships TIPS FOR PARENTS WITH PETS
D
ogs, like children, are part of the family. But no matter what the dog’s temperament, families with young children should take some important safety precautions. For the children’s safety and the dog’s, it’s crucial that they learn how to play nicely with each other. Here are some suggestions:

Paws and Claws Pet Resort
• Choose the Right Breed and Personality. Generally the large breeds - labradors, golden retrievers and standard poodles - are tolerant of kids. But each dog is an individual, so ask the breeder or rescue shelter about the dog’s personality before you purchase or adopt. • Teach the Kids Good Manners. They should never disturb the dog while it’s eating, taking a nap or playing with its favorite toy. • Keep your Pet Calm. Some dogs get very excited and agitated when confronted by lots of kids. And older dogs can be frightened by the high-pitched sounds and quick motions of children playing. • Keep an Eye on Things. Young children and dogs should always be supervised when together. And when your baby starts crawling, keep the dog by your side until it gets used to seeing a tiny human speeding across the floor. • Demonstrate Respect. Children should learn which parts of the dog’s body they can touch and pet and how to touch gently. For instance, your dog may love belly rubs and having its head stroked but resent having its feet or tail touched. GoodDog

Learn How THRIVE and Not Just Survive
Why an Independent Agent?
3 KEY STEPS TO GROWING YOUR BUSINESS IN TODAY’S ECONOMY
HARRIS DEAN/WESTERN STATES INSURANCE AGENCY
T
he economy is recovering but unfortunately, growth isn’t accelerating as it normally does in a recovery. The economy grew at an annual rate of 3% in the last quarter of 2011, but the pace will slow again early in 2012 and pick up only slightly by the end of the year. A sustained recovery still is not under way, more than two years after the end of the Great Recession. What does this mean for small business and what can you do to thrive, not just survive in today’s economic climate? There are 3 Key Strategies We Can All Use to Skyrocket our Sales Over the Next 12 Months: Have a Growth Plan: “You can have brilliant ideas, but if you can’t get them across, your ideas will not get anywhere.” —Lee Iacocca Just because you are located on the perfect corner doesn’t mean your truly capitalizing on your growth potential. A growth plan is much more than opening your doors and turning on the lights. A real growth plan has the method whereby your ideas will be delivered to potential consumers. Your brand needs to be consistently and effectively broadcasted in order to establish your reputation. Take the time to outline your marketing approach and establish a budget that will allow you to grow your business according to your plan. The most critical mistake a business can make is failing to implement a growth plan.
W
hen shopping for insurance, most people are unaware that there are different kinds of agents they can work with. Choosing the right one can make a big difference in securing the best combination of price and value.
This is because an independent insurance agent represents multiple brands, and can compare coverage and prices to find the best possible value for your individual circumstances. Independent agents are usually vested members of your community who are committed to doing business face-to-face and being your advocate in times of need. They Also: • Work for you when you have a claim. • Are not beholden to any one company. This means you don’t have to change agencies as your insurance and service needs change. • Are value-hunters who look after your pocketbook in finding the best combination of price, coverage and service. • Offer one-stop shopping for a full range of products, including home, renters, auto, business, life, health and retirement plans. • Are your consultants, working with you as you determine your needs. • Can periodically review your coverage to keep up with your changing insurance needs.
“A brand for a company is like a reputation for a person.” —Jeff Bezoz
• Are committed to customer satisfaction-it’s the key to their livelihood
Set Yourself and Business Apart:
• Are licensed professionals with strong customer and community ties.
Don’t follow the crowd, dare to be different and seek out ways to brand your business apart from the competition. Stay on top of the trends and stay current with the way people are connecting. Incorporate these things into your business and how your relating to the consumer. For example, don’t open a Facebook business page and allow it to sit there. Customize it with an interactive fan page that consumers can go to and check out your business. Many of us have a business fan page but is it truly interactive? Is it displaying your brand and delivering your message the way you need it to? Set yourself apart by staying ahead of your competition and staying relevant.
• Treat you like a person, not a number.
Set your business apart with these products: Custom Facebook Fan Page, Google Places, Square, Amazon Flow, QR Codes and Google Goggles. Connect With Your Community: As the global economy continues to teeter, consumers are trending back to local communities to purchase their goods. Advertising locally combined with social media will take an average business, with an average marketing budget and rocket them into new heights. Reaching the locals has never been more important than now and finding unique, effective and affordable advertising is the key element in branding yourself. The people that are reading the “local” publications because of the content are doing so because they want to feel connected. This is where you want to consistently brand your message. This is where you will start to connect at the community level and not the global level.
