Olive Oil for the Holidays BY JOSYLN COX, OWNER OF COEUR D’ALENE OLIVE OIL COMPANY
T
wo of my favorite holidays are just around the corner! Christmas is pretty hard to beat but for me there is nothing better than family and friends gathered around the dinner table, counting their blessings, and eating fantastic food on Thanksgiving! If you’re looking for great tasting dishes that won’t having you searching for another pant size here are few delicious and nutritious ideas. • Replace the butter! Using olive oil as a substitute for butter in many of your Thanksgiving dishes will yield heart-healthier foods without sacrificing flavor. Butter has 7 grams of saturated fat (the bad kind that causes problems for your arteries), 3 grams of cholesterol and just 2 grams of monounsaturated fats (the good kind that helps lower your cholesterol) per tablespoon. Olive oil has just 2 grams of saturated fats, no cholesterol, and 10 grams of monounsaturated fats per tablespoon. • Reconsider eliminating dessert! Question: What is Thanksgiving without a piece of pumpkin pie? Answer: Hopefully we’ll never know!!! The good news is, pumpkin is good for you! The health benefits are numerous…it’s loaded with potassium (564 mg/cup, which is more than bananas!), vitamin C (11mg/cup or 14+% of adult’s daily needs!), and it is reported to have cancer and wrinkle fighting properties too! It’s that darn crust (skip the lard please!),
and whipped cream that get us in trouble! Everything in moderation! • Start a new tradition! If year after year you’ve found yourself drifting in and out of consciousness while “watching” football on TV after your meal, switch things up this year!! Get the gang together for an outdoor trek, or just a trip around the block if the weather permits. If not, turn off the TV and tell stories that will make everyone laugh. A 150lb person burns 80 calories per mile at a 20-minute mile pace, and a 200lb person burns just over 100 calories. Laughing doesn’t burn a ton of calories, but in my opinion the benefits are endless!!! • Give thanks again…and again, and again, and again!!! We are so fortunate to live where we live with the things that we have and no matter what challenges we face, we need to remember to give thanks this season! We are so grateful for all of our customers, and know that without you, we would not be. HOME IMPROVEMENT
Updating Your Office Space HOW TO GIVE YOUR OFFICE A FACELIFT
T
he moment a customer walks into a business they reach a first impression that is not easily undone. Think about the last time you went out to a new restaurant and your first step inside. If it didn’t feel comfortable, chance is your mood changed to expecting disappointment instead of eagerly anticipating the meal to come. The same holds true for just about any profession where people come into your place of business. Jennifer Hege, owner of Builder’s Design Showcase in Hayden offers advice for business owners looking to make an impression or update their space.
you have products to sell, though, you need to keep abreast of current trends in order to better service your clients. Keeping your image updated shows your customers that you care about how you are perceived by them.
My office is outdated and need a facelift. Where do I start if I want to make it a little more modern? The first thing to consider when remodeling a commercial space is what image you want to convey to clients about yourself and your business. What comforts do you want to offer to them while they spend time with you or waiting for you such as seating, beverages and reading material? What types of workspace do you require? If you display products, what lighting do they require and how are they best surrounded to show them to advantage (i.e. paint colors, additional products, assembled displays, etc)? After these questions are answered, we assemble a design based on the dimensions of the available space with traffic patterns accounted for and how you have prioritized your needs.
I’m thinking about doing this myself, why should I hire a designer? Designers can help you SAVE money. They keep the entire project in focus, have discounts with vendors and help you achieve the most bang for your buck. Of course designers vary as with anything, so you need to interview a couple to find the one that’s right for you. One who learns about what you do and how to enhance your image based on your target clientele. It will help keep you from mis-spending money!
Why should I spend my money on updating my office space? You should only spend as much as you want a return on. If you are working as an employee, the company should spend some of the money, if they see an increase in productivity. If you are self employed, you need to assess how much you can squeeze out of your budget and prioritize areas that need attention first. If you don’t see clients at your work space, you may not need as much improvement. A coat of new paint, maybe some new flooring from time to time would be fine. If
I’m working on a fairly tight budget, what are some of the main features I should focus on? Wall color, flooring, counter materials, seating and accessories including art. These are all important areas to focus on initially.
What are some of the more popular styles and trends these days? Classic designs are just that and can remain somewhat timeless with minimal changes. The current trend in commercial space is more minimalist with simple lines and textures. This includes contrast and long wearing materials. The style you choose should have something to do with what you offer as a business and be comfortable or impressive to the type of client you wish to attract. Any other advice you’d like to offer? Always keep in mind the functional requirements of what you do. Your space needs to be an asset to your business and productivity. Your surroundings should enhance your performance at what you do or there is no return on your investment.

Fireplaces Add to Home’s Charm and Salability A GREAT RETURN ON INVESTMENT!
W
ho hasn’t pictured himself or herself snuggled up next to their “significant other” on a chilly winter’s evening, getting lost in the relaxing warmth and ambiance of a fireplace’s dancing flames and crackling sounds from burning logs. Or, perhaps, you’ve imagined your little ones racing downstairs to the living room, where surprise-filled stockings hanging on the fireplace mantel await their tiny eager hands. Or, maybe, you just get mesmerized watching the roaring flames wander every which way, as the day’s tensions dissolve right along with the burning wood logs.
Specializing in:
Yes, there’s definitely something special about a fireplace that touches our inner core, often evoking feelings of nostalgia. There’s little doubt that having one (or more) in your home adds a quiet elegance, sophistication, and old-style charm that few other home features can claim. And, although you may have not realized it, many homebuyers will expect a home to have a fireplace. These buyers view it as a necessary element that can’t possibly be excluded – all of their friends have one in their homes, after all. Also consider – adding a fireplace to your home will most likely benefit your bank account when you put your home on the market to sell – for those of you who aren’t planning to stay put for life. In fact, the National Association of Home Builders recommends the addition of a fireplace as one of the best home enhancements for giving you a great return-on-investment – to the tune of $12,000, roughly, or, according to other estimates, 10% additional in resale value for attractive, well-maintained ones. Many real estate experts also note that fireplaces are high on the list of desirable home features sought by homebuyers. Besides, think about the amount of enjoyment you and family will gain from it in the meantime. So, if you’re seriously ready to add a fireplace to your home, you may be surprised to learn there is more than one option available – unlike in your grandparents’ heydays, when your choice was limited to the old-fashioned wood burning-chimney combo, relatively unchanged for centuries. Today’s choices reflect consumer’s demands concerning creativity, design, size, and functionality. Gas, wood, pellet and even electric fireplaces have become a must have for many consumers. The most popular types of fireplaces available today basically are comprised within three categories. Your choice will depend on factors such as room size, personal needs and desires – for example, will it be used primarily for ambiance or for heating purposes -- and, or course, budget. But, whichever you choose, you’re assured that it will help you realize a more profitable sale of your home later.
Contact one of our comfort specialists to find out more at 208-762-9857 9443 North Government Way | Hayden, Idaho 83835
Consider These Fireplace Types: Wood Burning or Masonry:
The traditional type of fireplace we’re all familiar with; uses bricks or stones as a building material; has a chimney and usually a mantel; perhaps the most aesthetically pleasing -- the focal point of the room, and oftentimes, the home; uses a damper device to allow air in and smoke out; not as efficient of a heating source as other fireplace types – most of the heat radiates upward and ultimately, outside; higher maintenance – requires periodic cleaning – dark, sooty film eventually builds up on the stone or brickwork; more costly than other types – $10,000 or so is typical.
Gas: The most popular
choice – most builders install this type of fireplace in new homes; uses ceramic logs to simulate real ones; visually appealing; low maintenance; flame action resemble wood burning flames; much less costly than its traditional counterpart – some units can be installed for around $1,000; some models are actually designed to effectively heat a room; can be installed within an existing traditional type fireplace; some come with remote controls, complete with thermostats, uses natural gas or propane; more economical to operate than the traditional type; no extra space needed to store wood logs.
Electric: A good option
for condo or townhome owners, as they require little space; low maintenance; no venting system needed, some units provide realistic fire-like characteristics; some units provide heat, while other don’t; inexpensive – attractive units can be found for under $800

Take a Dip in the Pool for Health
A DIP IN THE POOL CAN BE A BLOOD PRESSURE & CHOLESTEROL LOWERING BONANZA
A
refreshing swim can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol. These are vascular health bonuses for people who are at risk for stroke, the leading cause of disability and the fourth leading cause of death in the United States.
In 2010, 137,000 Americans died of stroke, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “Swimming is a vascular health bonanza,” said David H. Stone, MD, and a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery. “Low-impact swimming provides a total cardiovascular workout. Regular exercise strengthens the heart muscle, resulting in less effort and a decrease in blood pressure.” One in every three Americans over 20 years old -- 74 million Americans -- has high blood pressure according to 2010 statistics from the CDC. One in every six American adults has high cholesterol (more than 250 mg/d L). More American women than men have high cholesterol. To reduce high cholesterol levels, exercise and diet are important factors. The American Council on Exercise suggests that adults burn 2000 calories a week
from exercise. The lack of regular physical activity results in 250,000 deaths annually, according to a 2003 report in the journal Circulation. As long as the exercise regimen continues, the health benefits remain. After 12 to 14 weeks of a three- to five-days-a-week exercise regimen of 20 to 60 minutes at an intensity of 60 to 90 percent heart rate, bad (LDL) cholesterol can decrease by up to 20 percent according to Livestrong. com. Another bonus: aerobic exercise can increase good (HDL) cholesterol. In a 2010 University of Western Australia study, 100 women swimmers, ages 50 to 70, lowered their bad cholesterol and lost more inches in the waist and hips than walkers. Likewise, swimming is easy on the joints and doesn’t result in overheating. There are non-invasive screening tests that can detect vascular disease. Medication can treat vascular disease. When properly supported your hips/ tailbone are positioned so that your lumbar area curves in toward your stomach and the Sacro Ease will fill in the void in the curve in your spine. You do not have to think about how you sit – just lean back and enjoy the ride! The rubber supports on the inside of the fabric are wrapped around a steel frame that is bent for your back. When you are driving on our awful roads the road vibration actually compresses your vertebrae and smashes your discs. When this happens a message is sent to your brain that you are in pain and this causes fatigue.
If you do not have a bad back, if you have a new car – our product is still effective. I can prevent your back pain. If your new car’s seats are not comfortable the Sacro Ease can fix the issue and stop you from losing money by getting rid of your new ride. Are you seeing a physical therapist, chiropractor or massage therapist – the Sacro Ease will help maintain what they are accomplishing! So by having a Sacro Ease you are supported, have less fatigue and will help your back stay healthy! We have models for virtually any vehicle or piece of machinery. If we do not have one in stock we can make one specifically for you as they are all made right in Kootenai County. For 72 years we have been making posture correction products for the entire world. Made of durable automotive grade fabric – we warranty our products for 5 years – no proration – the entire 5 years are covered. Simply bring to the factory and we will repair or replace your unit! The product is very affordable – ranging from $100 to 350 we DO have one that will fit your needs!

Lundin’s Violins
Northwest’s Best, Your Local Guide to the Area’s Best Businesses! Decorating Wisely to Make Your Holiday’s Sparkle! We all have a neighbor who goes overboard with the novelty outdoor lights around the holidays, but what if you want a subtler, more sophisticated approach to herald the season? The American Lighting Association (ALA) offers some proven tips for holiday decorating with refined style, inside and out. First of all, consider a grand entrance. Adding a few easy-to-install landscape up-lights to highlight trees and shrubs, or path lighting to illuminate a sidewalk or driveway, will immediately add a sense of elegance and sophistication. Once your company comes inside, it’s really time to shine. Little touches can inspire a cheery mood and make guests feel comfortable and merry. Entertaining in your home involves managing the flow of a room, so be careful not to over-clutter the space, especially when you’re hosting a group of people. Recessed lighting should be dimmed, and accent and cove lighting should be used to create highlights and drama. And don’t forget that portable table and floor lamps help set the perfect stage. Focus attention on a tree and other holiday decorations with portable
spotlights. These small, inexpensive fixtures are available at most local showrooms and can usually accommodate a tabletop dimmer. Create pretty silhouettes by placing a spotlight beneath a Christmas tree so that it shines up through the branches. For an especially warm and intimate feel, shine a spotlight toward framed photos of family members and past holiday gatherings, and fill a corner with a basket of children’s holiday books. One easy and quick change that will have maximum impact is to switch out a few lampshades. Replacing a neutral lampshade with one that is red or gold will soften the light and create a holiday atmosphere. Try adding a few shade charms, available at many craft stores, to add some sparkle and fun. You can even buy an inexpensive plain shade and decorate it with whatever suits your style and particular occasion.

Small Business Saturday
B
lack Friday has long been considered the pinnacle of shopping days for serious deal finders. Lines outside big box stores start forming just after Thanksgiving dinner is cleared and people will brave a long cold night outside standing in line to try and get their hands on this season’s hottest gifts at the lowest prices of the year. Many who would rather sit in the comforts of their home simply wait for Cyber Monday, the day when online retailers give out huge discounts as well. So what is a shopper to do during the time in between? Millions of people across the country have already committed to supporting their locally owned stores on Small Business Saturday. Started in 2010 by American Express, Small Business Saturday is a movement that encourages people to shop their unique local businesses in between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Small businesses are what drive local economies. Small business owners create jobs and the money they earn gets put back into the local community instead of being sent to giant corporate offices. Local businesses support community programs, youth sports, the arts, fundraisers and countless other activities that help our community thrive. Many times the products offered at our local stores simply can’t be found anywhere else. The Newsline is a strong supporter of locally owned businesses and encourages you to consider shopping local not only on Small Business Saturday, but throughout the year. These are our friends and neighbors and by supporting them you’re supporting your community. For more information on local businesses participating in this movement join the discussion at www.facebook.com/SmallBusinessSaturday.

Medigap and Medicare Advantage WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
What’s the difference between a Medigap plan and a Medicare Advantage plan? There are very big differences between these two types of insurance, although both are options for people with Medicare. Technically, only Medigap counts as “Medicare supplemental insurance” — in fact, that’s its formal name — but Medicare Advantage plans may provide some extra benefits that could be considered as supplementing Medicare. What is Medigap? Medigap is the term used for Medicare Supplement (MS) Plans used to pay for all or some of what Medicare Part A and Part B do not cover. This may include Medicare deductibles, coinsurance for items partially covered by Medicare and coverage for items not covered by Medicare such as excess charges. There are twelve Medicare approved plans with varying coverages. Most plans pay up to 100% of the Medicare approved amount. Two plans do have cost sharing programs with out-of-pocket cost limits, an attribute shared with Medicare Advantage plans. What is Medicare Advantage? A Medicare Advantage Plan (MA) stands in place of Medicare as the primary provider of health coverage. The MA plan provider must provide coverage at least comparable to Medicare Part A and Part B. They may supplement these coverages with additional coverage such as prescription drug or dental insurance.
All MA plans have cost sharing programs where the senior must pay a certain amount of a given charge before the insurance pays anything. The out-of-pocket cost limits for the individual can vary from $3,000 to over $7,000 per year. Is there a Price Difference between Medigap and Medicare Advantage Plans? Medigap plans will typically have a monthly premium based on the individuals attained age and will be adjusted annually. Enrolling outside of the open enrollment period can require underwriting approval. Medicare Advantage plans will have low to no premiums depending on the amount of cost sharing required by the plan. In addition, these plans receive government subsidies which normally include the Part B premium paid by the individual. Note: If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage health plan you cannot, by law, also purchase a medigap policy, even though you still have out-of-pocket expenses under that health plan. If you stay in traditional Medicare, you would need to join a separate Part D plan to get prescription drug coverage and pay an extra premium for it. Also, medigap does not cover out-of-pocket drug expenses. Comparing and Choosing Plans When deciding whether to buy a medigap policy to cover expenses in traditional Medicare or enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, it’s important to look at the details of each plan available to you in order to find the one that best suits your needs and pocketbook.

Late Season Pike & Muskie Fishing Article by Dan Howard
Some of the best pike and muskie fishing of the year is upon us. Fall is an excellent time to fish for them. The water has begun to cool due to the night temperatures and shorter days. The big fish that have been in the deeper water all summer begin to move up into the shallows to prepare for winter. Almost everyone is hunting or have turned their attention to other activities and so the fish are a little less pressured and wary. The weather can be a bit of a problem sometimes, but if you plan accordingly and are prepared for chilly weather your chances for a memorable trip are pretty good. I try to pick favorable weather days without rain and/or high winds. If I am cold, wet and miserable what is the point of going? Several years ago, I learned that leaving a little later in the morning in the fall makes the trip a lot more enjoyable for me. I like to give the day some time to warm the air before I get on the water. Water clarity is the biggest problem faced when fishing in the fall. The rivers feeding the lakes are generally at their lowest flows of the year so there is little debris or silt to discolor the water. With the exception of the fall turnover, there is really nothing to move the water around. The result is very clear water. Clear water means that the fish will be able to see your bait from a great distance and scrutinize your bait as it moves through the water. The best way to deal with this is to speed up the retrieve so they have little time to look over your offering. This will force the fish to make a quick decision and hopefully they will choose to bite.

When pike and muskie fishing, speeding up your retrieve means REALLY PICKING UP THE PACE! Typically, a good trolling speed for trout and kookanee is 2-3 mph. When trolling for pike and muskie the speed needs to be at least doubled to 4-6 mph especially in clear water. Don’t worry about going too fast. If the rod is still manageable in the rod holder the speed is fine. Most modern outboard motors will troll for pike and muskie without a small “kicker” outboard. A modern 35 to 250 HP outboard will troll a pike or muskie bait just fine. I mention trolling, because it is a very effective method for fishing this time of year. I will often troll when the weather has turned windy or colder and/or I do not feel like casting any more. It is also a great method for searching and covering a lot of water quickly. I very seldom see anyone trolling big baits for pike and muskie. Don’t dismiss this method. Troll along the deep side of weed beds using the standard “S” curve trolling method. Trolling in a straight line does not vary the speed and generally does not produce bites. When navigating around points, it is very important to continue trolling out into the main body of the lake as you pass the tip of the point and double back in a loop to meet the point again, now paralleling the other side of the point. Points are very productive structure items and this method allows you to cover them much better than simply following the contour. Bait selection is difficult to pin down. Sometimes they are finicky and other times they are not. On a normal day, it is not uncommon to fish 6 to 8 hours and turn 4 to 6 fish in that time. I say turn, because at least half of the fish you see (or turn) will follow your bait but will not bite or if they do bite, they will miss the bait altogether or you will pull it out of their mouth in the midst of all the excitement. I would suggest using baits that are larger and that you are comfortable fishing with. Your confidence with the bait is more than half of the game. The best advice I can give you is to NEVER slow your bait down when a fish is following it. SPEED IT UP. If you can’t speed it up because you have run out of line, you must begin a figure 8 with your pole immediately or loose your opportunity. I can’t emphasize this enough. Big pike and muskie like deep water next to weed beds. They like weeds that are leafy and are often found in deep water as they often never reach the surface. Be sure to have fun...you may even catch a trophy!

Coeur d’Alene Vikings Vikings Route Rocky Mountain Grizzlies in 5A Quarterfinal
T
he Coeur d’Alene Vikings Football team (8-2) needed only one score to press on toward their third state championship in the past three years. Having scored on their first drive, the Vikings took an early 7-0 lead and by half time led 31-0 and by games end, they shut out the Grizzlies 45-0 at Viking Field to qualify for the semifinal game where they will face the second-ranked Highland Rams who enter the match with a 8-2 record after their 41-34 non-league win over Borah (Boise, ID). The game will be on Saturday, November 10, 2012 in Pocatello. In a previous meeting earlier this year, Highland defeated Coeur d’Alene 45-26 at Viking Stadium. Since that early season loss, the Vikings have rattled off five straight wins and are playing their best football at the right time. Head coach Shawn Amos has his team locked in and focused at the task at hand. “Our kids played great, as we expected.” Amos stated. With over 300 yards in passing and over 100 yards on the ground, the Vikings mounted close to 500 yards in total offense.

hat a difference a year makes, after losing the 5A state title last year by a mere four points the girls cross country team crushed their closest opponent, the Vallivue Falcons of Caldwell, by 29 points. The Vikings were led by Sophomore Josie Brown and proved just how deep their team was finishing in the top of each heat they participated in. The girls cross country team has struggled at state recently, this is there first state championship in over 8 years having won it in 2004. Congratulations from the city of Coeur d’Alene!

Skip the Turkey? BREAKING THANKSGIVING TRADITION
W
hy not break from tradition this Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving is often a time for family traditions to come back to the forefront. It might be playing cards while keeping an eye on the football game, catching up with nieces and nephews on school, sports, and hobbies, or digging through the mountain of ads in the paper and debating whether you’ll be going to bed early to snatch up the best “Black Friday” deals Then there’s the food; mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, stuffing and of course the big turkey. While traditions can be hard to break, perhaps this is the year to skip the bird and try and beautiful cut of choice American Beef.
temper (around 225 degrees) for about 5 hours. Another way is to cook the roast hot (425 degrees) for 10 minutes, then drop the temperature to 325 degrees and cook at 14 minutes per pound. If you prefer your meat well done increase the time per pound. 4. A Few Sides to Consider. While all the standard Thanksgiving sides will work just fine consider adding garlic mashed potatoes, wild rice and black beans, and fresh baked bread. You’ll also want to have plenty of au jus and horseradish to compliment the savory meat.
Prime Rib is an ideal cut for serving large families and it requires less work in the kitchen. Tim Branen, owner of Tim’s Special Cut Meats in Coeur d’Alene, has been helping people find the perfect cut for years and offers a few tips to those thinking about breaking with tradition. 1. Consider Your Guests when Picking Out a Roast. A good rule of thumb is about 3/4lb of meat per adult so if you are having 12 adults to dinner a 9 to 12 pound roast should feed everyone, including small children. You can always go bigger if you want those traditional holiday leftovers! 2. Seasoning is Simple. Because of the intense flavor of this particular cut, you don’t need to spend all day seasoning and marinating. Salt, Pepper, Onion and Garlic Powder, are common. Tim’s family enjoys a lot of fresh garlic, but little else on the meat.

Sweet Eats, Adorable Treats! FUN FOOD FOR FALL
If you’re looking for a fun treat fall, you can’t go wrong with these “No Eek, No Squeak Cookie Cuties.” Full of nutrients and energy, these cookies provide a delicious burst of flavor.
No Eek, No Squeak Cookies (Makes 36 Cookies) Ingredients: 3 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter 3/4 cup sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 large egg 1/2 cup California raisins, chopped finely 1/4 cup sliced natural almonds, for the ears 4 30-inch black licorice laces, cut into 4-inch lengths, for the tails 3 ounces semisweet chocolate mini chips, for the eyes Directions: In a small bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. In another bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer on medium-high speed until creamy. Gradually, add sugar, beating until mixture is pale and fluffy. Beat in vanilla extract, then the egg. Reducing the speed, gradually add one-third of the flour, until mixed, add another third and another third until blended. Knead in the finely chopped California Raisins. Half the dough, flatten into two disks, wrap in plastic wrap, chill for 2 hours. Pre-heat oven to 350 degreeF. Roll about 1 tablespoon, shaping the dough in an oval. Gently pinch bridge of the nose to form eye sockets. Place two sliced almonds at top of each piece of dough, and place two mini chocolates for the eyes below the ears, pressing them gently into the dough. Place the mice on parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing the mice 2 inches apart. Bake until the cookies are light golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Insert a wooden skewer about 1/2-inch into mouse’s round end. Remove the skewer and insert the curved length of licorice for tail. Cool on rack. When the cookies are cool, they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature up to one week.

THE ADVENTURES OF THE FLYNN TWINS Part 5: A Quilly Surprise By Jan St. George Last month, Tyler, Arianna, and their mom went for a walk with their dog, Copper, to find fall leaves for a science project for their class. Copper was growling at something in the bushes. “Come here, Copper,” yelled Arianna, clapping her hands. Ignoring her, Copper continued to growl and bark at the brown creature waddling out of the bushes right at her.
They entered a small room with a metal examination table in the middle. It wasn’t long before a door opened and in walked a lady with a white lab coat. “Hi. My name is Dr. McCormick.” She looked over at Copper. “Oh my. She got a mouthful, didn’t she?” “She was really brave,” said Arianna. “She was trying to stop Tyler from going by a bush that had the porcupine in it.”
“No, Copper!” exclaimed Tyler. “It’s a porcupine!” The leash flew out of their mom’s hand as Copper lunged at the porcupine. The porcupine turned its body just as Copper got to it. As quickly as she had lunged, Copper backed up, yipping and tripping Tyler, who fell on her leash. “Mommy, she’s hurt,” cried Arianna. “She’s got quills poking out all over her face.” Their mom grabbed the leash, helped Tyler stand up, and hugged him as they watched the porcupine slip back into the bushes. “Are you okay?” she asked him. “I’m fine,” he replied. “Poor Copper.”
“I’d like to sedate her and pull out the quills,” Dr. McCormick told their mom. “It should only take about an hour, and then she can go home.” “That sounds wonderful,” said their mom. “Can I have the quills?” asked Tyler. “We usually just throw them away,” Dr. McCormick replied. “However, I think I can make an exception if it’s okay with your mom.” “That’s fine,” their mom said. ‘In fact, you can take them to class along with the fall leaves.”
Their mom turned to see Copper trying to remove the quills with her paws. “We’ve got to get her to Pet Emergency right away.”
As promised, it wasn’t long before Tyler was carrying a plastic bag filled with quills, Arianna was carrying the backpacks with the leaves carefully sorted out, and their mom carrying a sleepy Copper.
Picking up their backpacks, Tyler and Arianna led the way back to the car. “Try to keep her quiet, but don’t touch the quills,” Mom said, starting the engine.
“Who would have thought collecting leaves would be such an adventure,” said Tyler. The End.

“I thought porcupines shot their quills out from their tail,” said Tyler. “That’s what happens in the cartoons.” “No, the quills only come out upon contact,” their mom replied. “They are easily released from the porcupine’s body so it gives the appearance of them being flipped out.” She maneuvered the car into a parking space at the clinic. “Oh, dear,” said the receptionist as they walked in. “I know why you are here. Please go straight into room number one.”

Make Your Own Play-Doh! BROUGHT TO YOU BY MOBIUS SCIENCE CENTER
W
ho doesn’t love Play-Doh? The look, texture, and even smell of that particular modeling compound can bring back a flood of memories. Since the official Play-Doh ingredient list is a close-kept secret, recipes are in abundance for a homemade blast from the past. Today we’ll be making our favorite scented play dough and talking about the science of that childhood favorite.
play dough that is left out or played with for an extended period of time dries out and get flaky as the water evaporates, leaving the starch behind. So make sure you keep that scented play dough in an airtight container when not in use! For Further Experimentation: Try making this recipe with different types of flour. Due to differences in amounts and types of starch, you might notice a difference in the texture you create. *Play dough recipe from: http://chemistry.about.com/cs/howtos/ht/koolaiddough.htm
You Will Need: 1 cup all purpose flour ½ cup iodized salt 1 package unflavored drink mix (for scent) 3 Tablespoons vegetable oil 1 cup extremely hot water
*For more science of play dough: http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/play-doh1.htm
The Process: Mix together the flour salt and drink mix in a large bowl. Add the oil and continue to mix. Finally, add the hot water a little at a time, stirring until you get the ingredients mixed and the consistency of a very wet dough. Making sure the dough has cooled enough to handle, finish kneading by hand. Store the play dough in an airtight container. Be warned, some drink mixes will stain the hands. The Science: Flour, and starches in general, are made of strings of sugar molecules. When mixed with cold water, the starch absorbs a small amount but otherwise remains unchanged. The addition of hot water to the flour, however, makes the starch granules swell, break down, and release some of their contents into the water, forming a sort of gelatin that gives play dough it’s firm but pliable texture. This also explains why

SMALL TOWN SHERIFF
PHYSICAL
An agitated voice inquired, “Is your husband there?”
“My father said it’d be a good idea, sir.”
“Well, do you need him as the sheriff or the vet?” the wife asked.
“Oh? And what does your father do?”
“Both,” came the reply. “We can’t get our dog’s mouth open and there’s a burglar in it!”
“He’s in the Army, sir.”
In one small rural town the sheriff also fulfilled the role of the town’s veterinarian. One night the phone rang. The sheriff ’s wife answered.
Having passed the enlistment physical, Jon was asked by the doctor, “Why do you want to join the Navy, son?”
GAS COMPANY CAFETERIA CHOICES
A new high school student examines the food served to him in the cafeteria. “Do I have any choice here?” he asks a cafeteria lady.
Two gas company servicemen, a senior training supervisor and a young trainee, were out checking meters in a suburban neighborhood. They parked their truck the end of the alley and worked their way to the other end.
“Yes, you do. You can eat it or not”
At the last house a woman looking out her kitchen window watched the two men as they checked her gas meter.
EUROPEAN TOUR
Finishing the meter check, the senior supervisor challenged his younger coworker to a foot race down the alley back to the truck to prove that an older guy could outrun a younger one.
There were appreciative murmurs from the crowd.
As they came running up to the truck, they realized the lady from that last house was huffing and puffing right behind them. They stopped and asked her what was wrong.
“Not a stone in it has been touched,” the guide continued, “nothing altered, nothing replaced in all those years.”
Gasping for breath, she replied, “When I see two gas men running as hard as you two were, I figured I’d better run too!”
A group of tourists was being guided through an ancient castle in Europe. “This place,” the guide told them, “is 600 years old.”
“Wow,” piped up one woman from the rear of the group. “They must have the same landlord I do.”
