Spring Renewal:
Growth, Hope, and Community
As Spring arrives, there’s a noticeable shift in the air—one that feels like a breath of fresh air after a challenging season. With the arrival of longer days, warmer temperatures, and the vibrant colors of nature, it’s a time of renewal and rebirth. This season brings with it a newfound sense of optimism, and for good reason.
In many ways, Spring mirrors the spirit of Easter—a time of renewal, hope, and fresh beginnings. For centuries, Easter has been a symbol of resurrection and transformation, a powerful reminder that no matter how tough the winter season is, new life is always just around the corner. Whether through the blossoming of flowers or the growth of our local communities, this is the season when things truly come to life.
Across the country, in small towns like ours, the spirit of resilience and community is stronger than ever. Spring reminds us of what truly matters—family, hard work, and the local businesses that keep our
communities thriving. It’s a season of growth, not just in the fields but also in our own backyards. The positivity in the air is hard to ignore, and it feels like the perfect time to embrace new opportunities and invest in what makes our small towns so special.
As we celebrate Easter and the promise of rebirth, let’s take a moment to appreciate the things that unite us— supporting local businesses, spending time with our loved ones, and taking pride in the communities we call home. The strength of small-town values is more important than ever, and Spring is the perfect time to nurture that spirit.
Here’s to a season of growth, hope, and the positive energy that comes with new beginnings. Spring is here, and with it comes the promise of brighter days ahead. Wishing you a season full of renewal and joy.

Smart construction techniques, energy-saving tips for a stylish, functional home
by LIKE MEDIA TEAM
The construction of your dream home doesn’t have to be expensive — with some strategic planning and decision-making, you can create a lovely, functional space that works for you, and your budget.
Every choice you make can reduce the cost of your dream home, whether it’s choosing a modular design that saves time, or reclaimed construction that adds character. You can also make your home work for you by saving money on things like smart home tech, DIY projects, and investing in the right home essentials.
Enlisting tax incentives for green construction and energy improvements can lower prices and drive longterm appreciation. If you're open to creativity and lowcost upgrades, you can ensure your first home is one that you love. Here, you’ll find practical ideas to build smarter, save money, and build a home that embodies your vision and budget.
MODULAR CONSTRUCTION
01
Modular homes are homes made in modules in a factory. The modules are then assembled on top of an existing foundation. These homes tend to be more cost-effective, as they can be constructed quickly and are often completed faster than on-site builds due to streamlined labor. These houses are built per demand, as the home can be designed to specific specifications, thus keeping individual tastes in mind. The homes are also usually more energy efficient because of specific standards laid out during the manufacturing process. These homes are constructed in a factory in a controlled environment, inhibiting wasted resources. Modular construction is an easy way to save money on your dream home.
02
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNS
Design complexities increase construction costs because they require more materials and labor. With a simple design, like a rectangular or square floor plan, can reduce labor time and costs, while still providing the space for beautiful results with the right materials, finishes, and landscaping. Keeping the design simple and clean-cut with a modern, sleek look saves money and makes it easier to construct and complete within budget and time.
A thoughtful, simple design can be both elegant and costefficient. It’s about maximizing space while minimizing unnecessary features.
RECYCLED AND SALVAGED MATERIALS
Build with used or salvaged materials to save money and add character to your home. Items selected from a salvage shop have history; they often reflect the insight of a DIY spirit, adding charm and dressing a home beautifully. Reclaimed wood from old barns, factory floors, or railway tracks; steel from dismantled bridges or bombed-out tanks; and bricks from demolished buildings are economical – they are eco-friendly and help your home create its narrative.
Buying salvage materials requires less new matter, saving money, and treading more lightly upon the landscape. Buying locally spares related transportation costs and fights monopolies, so your salvaged DIY project accrues the potential to grow into an inexpensive and sustainable construction project.
AFFORDABLE BUILDING MATERIALS
04
The best way to save money is to use materials that offer outstanding value without sacrificing quality. Your home could be built with concrete blocks, bamboo, or prefab panels for a fraction of the cost of standard materials at the same quality level. Moreover, these materials are incredibly inexpensive, not only because of the price but because they are sustainable. Bamboo, for example, is renewable (it usually takes a year to harvest), and concrete blocks have incredible insulation value. Prefab panels can build structures quickly and with less labor than regular materials. Once you start thinking this way, you will begin to research alternative materials and only consider those that will make your home sturdy, stylish, and, most importantly, affordable.
ESSENTIAL SPACES
05
Work through your home’s essential spaces first — the kitchen, bathroom, living area, etc. — building phase-by-phase to create a foundation that allows for expansion later on. Living in the house as the building is done in phases spreads the stress and the financial commitments over several years. You’ll be able to enjoy comfortable, beautiful spaces from day one and gradually enhance your home over time, adding features as your budget allows. By focusing on the essential spaces first, you can achieve your dream home over time without feeling financially strained or overwhelmed.

Founded in 1946, the company is now owned and operated by sisters Jennifer Hawkins and Charlie Hawkins Floberg, who represent the third generation of the family business. The company, boasts a team of 60 brokers, has evolved over the decades to keep pace with the community’s changing needs.
Jennifer Hawkins, the managing broker for the Key2See team, along with team members CJ Stewart, Whitney Johnsen, and Shea Graves, attributes the company’s success to a legacy of service, dedication, and community involvement. With decades of collective experience, the Key2See team prides itself on offering a personalized, concierge-style approach to real estate.
Jennifer brings 24 years of experience to the table. As president of the Pierce County Association of REALTORS, she has championed education, growth, and advocacy for homeowners. “What sets us apart is our commitment to the community,” she shares. Beyond transactions, Jennifer and her team guide clients through the complexities of buying and selling with expertise.
The Key2See team’s approach to real estate isn’t just about selling homes; it’s about creating long-lasting relationships with clients. “We pride ourselves on our concierge approach,” Jennifer explains. “Selling real estate as a Gig Harbor luxury realtor involves marketing, negotiating, market knowledge, and partnerships with outside vendors to ensure the home is put in the best light possible.”
As the Gig Harbor real estate market continues to evolve, the team has noticed an interesting trend: an upswing in compound living and empty nesters moving to the area to be closer to family. Despite challenges like inventory shortages and rising interest rates, the Key2See team is helping buyers stay informed and confident. Through their comprehensive buyers’ consultation, clients are empowered with the knowledge they need to make the right decisions in a competitive market.
Beyond real estate services, Hawkins-Poe Key2See is deeply involved in supporting the Gig Harbor community. “We are HUGE advocates for small businesses,” Jennifer says. The team makes a concerted effort to connect their clients with local businesses, sharing their love for the town and its vibrant charm through social media and word of mouth.
Looking to the future, Hawkins-Poe Key2See is focused on ensuring that homeowners’ voices remain heard at the legislative level. As part of the REALTOR PAC, they are actively involved in tracking bills that impact housing and growth in the area, working to ensure that future developments align with the community’s needs.
Jennifer’s dedication to her profession and community has not gone unnoticed. In 2023, she was honored as REALTOR of the Year, while her team set a record with an $8.5 million home sale—the highest in the area. Beyond sales, their commitment to Gig Harbor runs deep. A portion of every commission supports local charities and youth sports, reinforcing their belief that real estate is about more than just homes— it’s about building a stronger community.

Gennaro Contracting: Built on Tradition
For AJ Gennaro, construction isn’t just a business—it’s a family tradition. More than 40 years ago, his father built the original Gennaro Contracting in St. Louis, Missouri, passing down the trade skills and values that define a great contractor: honesty, craftsmanship, and a commitment to doing the job right.

Craftsmanship, community, and excellence in remodeling
by LIKE MEDIA TEAM
2015, he saw firsthand how difficult it was for homeowners to find dependable contractors. With a strong foundation in hands-on work and business, he set out to change that. “Neighbors kept telling me how hard it was to find someone they could trust for home projects,” AJ recalls. His commitment to detail, personal service, and integrity quickly earned a loyal client base, and the business took off.
Gennaro Contracting started as a full-service operation— handling everything from new home construction to handyman work—but eventually refined its focus to residential remodeling and composite deck construction with m aintenance-free railing. “We initially tried to be everything to all our clients,” AJ says. “Now, we’ve honed in on what we do best and deliver at a high level every time.”
AJ emphasizes education, communication, and innovation to keep his team at the forefront of the industry. Attending industry-leading events, such as the International Builders Show in Las Vegas, keeps them ahead with the latest techniques and materials. “Learning from the best lets us bring that experience back to our community and excel at what we do,” AJ says
This dedication to quality is backed by top industry certifications. Gennaro Contracting is home to a Certified Remodeler and a Certified Project Manager through the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), as well as certifications from Andersen Windows, Trex, and Deckorators. They’re also active members of the Gig Harbor Chamber and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), reinforcing their reputation as a trusted name in home renovation and remodeling.
But for AJ, success isn’t just about remodeling homes—it’s about building community. Gennaro Contracting partners with Kiwanis, Rotary, and Habitat for Humanity, helping raise funds for local initiatives and contributing to housing projects that make a real difference. “We want to make a difference—not just through our work with clients and employees, but also by giving back to the community.”
Customer satisfaction is the foundation of their business. AJ ensures a smooth experience by setting clear expectations from the start. “We take the time to walk clients through our process, address potential challenges, and plan carefully to make the project as seamless as possible for homeowners,” he explains.
As Gennaro Contracting looks to the future, its mission remains the same: helping homeowners fall in love with their homes again. From kitchen and bath remodels to custom decks and community initiatives, Gennaro Contracting remains committed to its motto: “Building Better Together.”

Native Plants FOR POLLINATION
By choosing plants native to Gig Harbor, Washington for your home garden, you’ll encourage a flourishing ecosystem of pollinators like bees and butterflies. Adapted to the local climate, native plants are easier to care for while providing essential food and shelter for pollinators.
Gig Harbor falls within USDA hardiness zones 8b and 9a, with average minimum temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Ensure your garden is ready to withstand colder winters by choosing plants rated for your zone or lower. Native flowers, trees, and shrubs can keep your garden blooming from early spring until late fall, providing pollinators with year-round nourishment.
Beyond planting flowers, creating a pollinator-friendly garden environment can include adding features like bee hotels, shallow water baths for butterflies, and patches of bare soil to support ground-nesting bees.
Whether it’s adding some flowers or rearranging your entire yard, the native plans you introduce will help build a better, more stable landscape and give your outdoor space more beauty and meaning by providing a healthy home for pollinators.
Create a thriving garden with native plants that support bees and butterflies year-round
by LIKE MEDIA TEAM
Why Native Plants Matter
Native plants are the foundation of a healthy ecosystem. In Gig Harbor, they thrive in the local climate, requiring less water and care while providing essential nectar and shelter for pollinators. Native plants are nature’s way of saying, “I belong here.” They require less effort to thrive in their natural environment, allowing them to give back. By selecting plants that already belong in the area, gardeners can play a critical role in supporting biodiversity.
Understanding the Growing Zones
Gig Harbor lies in USDA growing zones 8b and 9a:
• Zone 8b: Average minimum temperatures of 15–20° Fahrenheit.
• Zone 9a: Average minimum temperatures of 20–25° Fahrenheit.
When selecting plants, choose species rated for your zone or lower to ensure survival during occasional cold snaps.
Native Plants for Pollinators
• Red Flowering Currant (Ribes sanguineum): This stunning shrub bursts with pink blooms in early spring, attracting hummingbirds and bees.
• Oceanspray (Holodiscus discolor): A resilient shrub with cascading white flowers, providing nectar for a variety of pollinators.
• Broadleaf Lupine (Lupinus latifolius): With its tall, colorful flower spikes, this native lupine is a favorite for butterflies and bees and enriches the soil with nitrogen.
• Showy Milkweed (Asclepias speciosa): Essential for monarch butterflies, this plant offers nectar and serves as a breeding ground for caterpillars.
Flowering Trees to Consider
Incorporating flowering trees adds structure and provides a season-long food source for pollinators.
• Pacific Dogwood (Cornus nuttallii): This iconic tree produces large white blooms and is an excellent resource for pollinators in the spring.
• Bitter Cherry (Prunus emarginata): With fragrant white blossoms, this native tree is a pollinator magnet and supports birds with its small fruits.
The Role of Wildflowers
Wildflowers are a cornerstone of pollinator habitats and can transform your yard into a meadow-like paradise. Popular choices for Gig Harbor include:
• Common Camas (Camassia quamash): Its vivid blue flowers bloom in spring and are a valuable nectar source.
• Oregon Sunshine (Eriophyllum lanatum): This drought-tolerant plant has cheerful yellow flowers that attract bees and butterflies.
Avoiding Invasive Species
Avoid planting invasive species that can outcompete native plants. For example, while butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii) is marketed as pollinator-friendly, it provides little ecological benefit compared to native plants and can spread aggressively.
Designing for Diversity
A thriving pollinator garden offers a variety of heights, bloom times, and plant types to support wildlife throughout the growing season.
• Early Spring: Red-Flowering Currant, Pacific Dogwood
• Summer: Lupine, Oceanspray
• Fall: Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis), Douglas Aster (Symphyotrichum subspicatum)
Creating Habitat Beyond Plants
Pollinators need more than flowers. When we design gardens, we’re creating homes, not just landscapes. Features like bee hotels and water baths turn yards into thriving ecosystems. Incorporate features like:
• Bee Hotels: Provide solitary bees with nesting spaces using wood blocks or bundles of hollow stems.
• Butterfly Puddling Areas: Shallow dishes of water mixed with sand or salt give butterflies essential minerals.
• Brush Piles and Bare Ground: These areas offer shelter and nesting spots for groundnesting bees and other beneficial insects.
Water-Wise Gardening
Even though Gig Harbor receives regular rainfall, summer droughts are common. Native plants are naturally adapted to handle dry periods, but you can help by using drip irrigation, mulching around plants to retain moisture, and grouping plants with similar water needs. Smart water practices aren’t just about conservation—they ensure your plants grow stronger, healthier, and more resilient.
Supporting Pollinator Health
Avoid the use of pesticides, as they are harmful to pollinators; instead, focus on the use of integrated pest management techniques, like introducing beneficial insects to help control garden pests. Further support the health of local pollinators by choosing organic compost to enrich soil health and create
• Local Nurseries: Many nurseries in Gig Harbor specialize in native plants.
• Extension Offices: Local university extensions often provide free gardening resources.
• Online Tools: Websites like The Old Farmer’s Almanac Garden Planner help map out garden layouts and schedules. Seed Savers Exchange specializes in heirloom seeds and preserving biodiversity, while other online tools provide valuable resources for planning, planting, and maintaining a thriving garden.
Creating a garden that supports bees, butterflies, and other pollinators is a rewarding way to contribute to a healthy ecosystem. With the right plants and a bit of planning, you can transform your yard into a thriving, beautiful habitat that benefits both wildlife and your community.

Peninsula Youth Orchestra:
NURTURING YOUNG MUSICIANS
Since its founding in 1998, the Peninsula Youth Orchestra (PYO) in Gig Harbor, Washington, has been a beacon for string players. This nonprofit emerged from the passion of volunteers and educators who wanted to address the lack of string programming at their community schools. Today, PYO serves young musicians from Gig Harbor, the Key Peninsula, Port Orchard, Bremerton, Olalla, Tacoma, and Puyallup.
Under the guidance of Executive Director Christy Jones and an esteemed leadership team, including Shannon Perry as Board President and Anna Downan as Board Treasurer, the PYO offers a nurturing and rigorous environment for
students from ages 8 to 18. The talented conductors—Matt Underwood, Stuart Hake, and Christine Faught—help develop students' skills across four orchestras that cater to varying proficiency levels.
The organization’s mission emphasizes the joy and benefits of music-making within a string orchestra, blending compassion with excellence. PYO provides year-round opportunities, including after-school string programs, select before-school classes, community performances, and a popular weeklong summer string camp culminating in a free concert. Financial assistance ensures accessibility, so no student is left behind due to economic challenges.
“It is wonderful each time a child is able to reach a new level of success with an instrument and overcome fears of performance. We watch their confidence and excitement grow each year!”
Currently, PYO supports around 85 students, encouraging their growth and confidence through music. Christy Jones notes, “It is wonderful each time a child is able to reach a new level of success with an instrument and overcome fears of performance. We watch their confidence and excitement grow each year!”
Performances showcase the talent and hard work of these young musicians. On February 2nd, 2025, the orchestra performed at Peninsula High School, offering a free concert for the community. In March, PYO students participated in the Altrusa Empty Bowls event at Chapel Hill, further highlighting their commitment to community engagement.
The organization's impact extends beyond performances. It has played a vital role in filling the gap left by the absence of string programs in local schools. Its efforts have made music education more accessible and inclusive, particularly for homeschooled students facing resource or logistical challenges.
The organization plans to expand its program to prepandemic levels and provide new solutions, such as its recently expanded before-school beginner program. “By reaching both groups, we can serve a wider and more diverse range of students,” Jones shares.
The PYO encourages community support to sustain its mission. Donations and sponsorships help keep costs low for students, while invitations for local event performances inspire musicians and audiences alike. “It is inspiring for students to perform and for the community to be able to enjoy the beauty of string music,” says Jones.
Visit Peninsula Youth Orchestra's website at HarborPYO.org for more information about its programs and ways to support them. Together, we can ensure the next generation of musicians remains in the industry and bring music to the world.
Easter: A time of hope around the world
by STEVE RUSSO
This season holds deep meaning for many, including myself. It symbolizes renewal, fresh beginnings, and the promise of eternal life. What makes it extraordinary is witnessing people worldwide come together as billions celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter stands as a powerful reminder of why this holiday is so significant. Beyond the ringing of church bells and cherished family gatherings, it marks a moment that transformed everything, leaving an everlasting impact on the world.
John 3:16
Why Easter Matters
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
The story grabs you—four Gospel writers (Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, and John 20), each telling how it went down that Sunday morning. They paint a compelling picture of an empty tomb and Jesus showing up alive to people who'd watched him die days before. John 19:17-19 (ESV) says: 17 “And he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side and Jesus between them. 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews."
Paul cuts straight to the chase in 1 Corinthians 15: "Without Christ's resurrection, your belief is meaningless because you remain trapped in your sins." There is no sugar-coating there—everything hinges on this one event.
As recounted in Mathew 28, the story of the resurrection was witnessed by hundreds of first-account witnesses. Matthew 28:5-7 (ESV) says: 5 “But the angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead ….”
Good Friday hits hard. It should. But Easter Sunday? That's when history was changed for eternity! Death lost. Life won. For those who believe, like me, it's not just some ancient story—it's a promise we bank on.
How the World Welcomes Easter
What intrigues me is how different cultures honor Easter morning. Here's what I've seen and heard from people who have lived in various cultures:
Dawn in the Philippines
A Filipino relative explained their Salubong ceremony to me. At Easter sunrise, the entire community shows up to recreate Mary meeting her risen son. They said even the tough guys get choked up watching it. Sometimes, you need to see something played out to understand the real impact.
Brazilian Passion
My good friend Alfonso told me about Nova Jerusalém's Passion play. The whole town turns into Jerusalem, and they act out the Easter story from start to finish. There is no holding back. It is raw and unfiltered. It's intense, and the impact is generational.
Spring Mornings in America
Here at home, we do our own thing. A lot of people attend a sunrise service. Standing there in the cold, waiting for dawn—just like those women at the tomb. Later, there's egg hunts and the whole Easter Bunny business. Nothing wrong with that. But that quiet moment at sunrise? That's real. That’s beauty. That's the peace we are promised!
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” 1 Peter 1:3
In the Streets of Rome
A good friend who visited Rome for Easter told me about St. Peter's Square. Picture thousands of people from every country you can name standing shoulder to shoulder as the Pope leads Mass. In Florence, there is a tradition called Scoppio del Carro. People light up a cart loaded with fireworks and other pyrotechnics and watch as it lights up the sky; the sight is truly spectacular. Compared to our Easter Bunny, it sounds out there, but it's been their way of marking Easter for centuries.
Under Greek Stars
In Greece, the celebration starts at midnight in a dark church, and everyone holds unlit candles. Then, boom—the priest calls out, "Christos Anesti!" (Christ is risen!), and the light spreads until the whole place is lit. Then, it's time to head home, crack some red eggs (symbolizing new life), and feast on lamb—simple traditions with deep meaning.
Finding Hope Together
Here's what hits me about Easter: it brings people together, no matter where you're from. Whether in Greece with those candles, Italy with the fireworks, or at your local church at sunrise, you're part of something bigger. All these places celebrate Easter their own way, but they all point to the same thing—that morning when death was defeated, told in those Gospel accounts that still pack a punch and are worth your own investigation if this story speaks to you. As recorded in the Gospel of John, it is:
John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
Different cultures and traditions share the same core truth—light beats darkness, life beats death. That's Easter. It's what keeps people coming back year after year, worldwide.
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Romans 10:9

I understand some parties believe getting to agreements ahead of time may save them money by hopefully reducing legal fees. However, more often than not, those “agreements” end up costing them more in the long run.
It is often more expensive for a lawyer to review, advise and revise draft documents prepared in advance by clients than it is for the lawyer to do the drafting for them. This is because we, as lawyers, understand all the provisions of the complicated mandatory forms, including how best to utilize them. We also understand the nuances of drafting a solid property settlement agreement, child support order and parenting plan.
Furthermore, it is costly, not just financially but often emotionally, when a client seeks legal assistance after tentative agreements have been made, only to have the professional inform the parties that perhaps a particular “agreement” is flawed or won’t be approved by the court.
Common examples of flawed “agreements” often look like this:
“We decided neither of us has to pay the other child support.”
“My spouse agreed not to touch my pension.”
“We agreed to a 50/50 parenting plan despite one living in Gig Harbor and the other in Puyallup.”
When clients appear for their first meeting with me with an outline of their “agreements” that might be untenable, I also ask them, “Would you have made these agreements if you had learned the legal parameters first?”
Many clients who seek a non-adversarial approach to their divorce wrongly think that negotiations are only about arguing and conflict and, therefore, want to avoid further disagreements. Some are afraid to upset the other party for fear of reprisals. In the right professional hands, difficult topics can often be addressed while normalizing their difficulty without ramping up the conflict.
This is not to discourage you from outlining your hopes for the best outcomes and trying to carve your settlement terms around those. Just be sure you become informed by a reputable professional before becoming too vested in those agreements. By seeking professional help as early in the process as possible, you and your soon-to-be ex will save yourselves time, money, and, hopefully, unnecessary emotional upheaval in the long run.

IV Vitamin Therapy at Uptown Dental
EXPERT IN
Dentistry
courtesy of DR. RHONDA SAVAGE, UPTOWN DENTAL & WELLNESS CENTER
Spring is a time when everyone wishes to rebalance and rejuvenate their health. IV vitamin therapy is a popular treatment that delivers vitamins and nutrients into the bloodstream. By bypassing the stomach, it provides the most efficient absorption, giving the body 100% of the nutrients. IV vitamin therapy helps boost energy, enhance strength, and promote overall well-being.
What Is IV Vitamin Therapy?
IV Vitamin Therapy combines vitamins, minerals, and nutrients via an intravenous (IV) drip. This process allows for rapid, direct transport of nutrients into the blood and delivers immediate benefits. The therapy is tailored to your health goals, whether boosting immunity, fighting off fatigue, or staying hydrated. Each vitamin-packed session lasts between 45 and 60 minutes and is an easy and effective way to recharge your body.
Why IV Vitamin Therapy Can Be Beneficial
There are many positives to IV vitamin therapy, especially in the spring, when searching for a way to boost energy levels and eliminate the winter blues. These include:
• Energy Enhancement: Nutrients and energy levels can be recovered, providing essential nutrition, and a natural energy surge can occur.
• Strengthened Immune Function: IV therapy, which includes vitamin C and other immune-stimulating vitamins, strengthens the body’s defenses against seasonal illnesses.
• Accelerated Recovery: Whether recovering from illness,
surgery, or general weariness, IV vitamin therapy accelerates treatment and recovery by getting nutrients right where needed.
• Enhanced Hydration: The IV drip includes fluids to replenish the body, vitamins, and minerals for the skin and overall well-being.
Specialized IV Vitamin Therapy
Uptown Dental offers specialized IV Vitamin Therapy options customized to address specific deficiencies or health concerns. Some recommended options are:
• Energy Boost: Tailored to hydrate with vital nutrients such as B-complex, B12, and vitamin C to re-energize.
• Immune Boost: This perfect immune booster contains a combination of B-complex, vitamin C, and glutathione, which protects against seasonal illnesses.
• Myer’s Cocktail: Balances and eliminates chronic pain by blending B-complex, magnesium, and vitamin C for complete rejuvenation.
IV Vitamin Therapy is one of many ways to improve your health and wellness. Since spring is a time for renewal, it's a great way to refresh and prepare for the coming months. Whether you seek an energy boost, immune system fortification, or targeted nutrient replenishment, this cutting-edge therapy offers a unique approach to revitalizing your body and mind. Experience inner renewal with Uptown Dental!

The Overlooked Essential:
Landscaping
Elevate Your Home's Beauty with Expert Design
by JENNIFER HAWKINS, KEY2SEE WITH HAWKINS POE
It's the forgotten housing project and arguably the most important: your landscape design.
What would be your guess as to what the first impression of your home is when guests or potential buyers arrive?
You guessed it: your landscape!
The reality is that when a home is being built, the landscape is the final piece of the puzzle. With funds at their lowest, the landscape is often overlooked—or tackled as a do it yourself (DIY) project. Here is the kicker: the average return on investment (ROI) for your landscape project is 104%, according to the National Association of REALTORS. So, whether your landscape is at the bare minimum or nonexistent at all, it deserves a refresher before going to the market.
Like other household projects, a landscape overhaul has a process and usually has a higher ROI if professionals are involved. For example,
we walk through a DIY kitchen remodel and can see the flaws that will happen with a landscape project.
Living in the Northwest, hiring someone with expertise in this area is critical! We have so much lush green surrounding habitats, and our yards go dormant for five months out of the year, making it imperative to have plants and a layout that will look nice year-round.
Three things are often overlooked:
• Sunlight
• Blooming season
• Architectural layout
Here in Washington, our sunlight varies more than anywhere else in the country, both with hours of daylight (9 hours in the winter – 16 hours in the summer) and our seasonal cloud cover, making it imperative to have plants that are native or can withstand such drastic changes.
KEY 2 SEE TEAM
The blooming season for each chosen plant will help with year-round beauty. Just because most plants will go dormant doesn’t mean we don’t want beauty or blooms in those dreary winter months! So, planning different seasons of blooms is a great idea for a Northwest landscape.
The last piece of the puzzle is the architectural layout. Professional design is where you can really tell the difference between a DIY vs. a professionally designed yard. Someone who has gone to school to learn about the growth patterns, ins and outs of each species, and modern lines versus country sweeping settings and the plants that go with both are easily deciphered and will set your home apart from the competition.
There are many talented landscape teams around Gig Harbor, and we have worked with them all! If you need help with your project, we can help you and be a guide. Reach out to get you headed in the right direction. Happy Spring!

SPRING 2025
Bring the 2025 Color of the Year into Your Home
Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year, Mocha Mousse (PANTONE 17-1230), is a warm, rich brown that adds a sense of comfort and sophistication to any space. This versatile, timeless shade works beautifully in modern and classic interiors.
To bring this color into your home, start small with throw pillows, blankets, or decorative accents. If you seek a bigger impact, consider an accent wall, upholstered furniture, or even kitchen cabinetry in this earthy tone. Mocha Mousse pairs effortlessly with soft neutrals like cream and off-white for a cozy, inviting ambiance. For more contrast, try pairing it with deep greens, navy blues, or warm terracotta shades.
This shade creates a calm, focused atmosphere in a home office, while in the living room, it adds depth and warmth. The key is balance—use it in the right places, and Mocha Mousse will bring an effortlessly stylish and inviting feel to your home.

Give Where You Live
Realtor Jo Jensen - A Lifelong Commitment to Community
Fby PAIGE SCHULTE Realtor + Community
or over three decades, Jo Jensen has been a trusted name in local real estate, helping families find their dream homes. But beyond her reputation as a dedicated professional, she has devoted her life to giving back to the community. Her unwavering commitment to philanthropy and advocacy has left a lasting impact on countless lives.
Jo’s commitment to service began long before her real estate career. Since 1974, she has served on nonprofit boards, supporting causes that uplift those in need. Most recently, she joined the Board of O-UT, an organization focused on prison rehabilitation, reinforcing her belief in second chances.
One of her most significant contributions is the Joseph Gary Jensen Scholarship, designed to assist formerly incarcerated individuals at the University of Washington Tacoma (UWT). This initiative helps with everyday expenses like transportation and childcare, often overlooked barriers to success. Jo recently converted the scholarship into a $50,000 endowment, ensuring its impact continues for generations.
Jo’s dedication to real estate spans so long that she recalls the days of writing Purchase and Sale agreements using three layers of carbon
paper, requiring agents to PRESS HARD. Her experience in the industry reflects her resilience and adaptability, qualities that extend into her community work.
Beyond education, Jo actively supports those experiencing homelessness, backing an off-the-grid program that offers a safe space for individuals in need. Her compassion extends to multiple causes: serving as a foster parent for at-risk youth, aiding refugee resettlement, supporting sexual assault survivors, and contributing to the Post Prison Education Program.
Her philosophy is simple yet powerful: if each person made a difference in just one person’s life, the world would change. She listens, responds with action, and finds joy in seeing people rise above challenges. Through decades of leadership and service, Jo has proven that community is about the people who make it better. Whether advocating for the incarcerated, supporting the unhoused, or leading in real estate, she embodies the spirit of giving.
Thank you, Jo Jensen, for being an example of giving where you live. Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula are lucky to have you; as REALTORS in the community, you are an inspiration.

Perfectly Dye Eggs for Easter Fun
Prepare the Eggs: Start with clean, dry white eggs. Boil them for 10-12 minutes, then cool them completely in ice water to prevent cracking.
Set Up Your Dye: In separate bowls, mix:
• ½ cup boiling water
• 1 teaspoon white vinegar
• 10-20 drops of food coloring (adjust for desired intensity).
Dip the Eggs: Using a wire whisk, tongs, or a spoon, submerge each egg in the dye. Leave it for a few minutes, depending on how vibrant you want the color. Create Patterns: Before dipping, add rubber bands, stickers, or sponge designs. For a marble effect, swirl a drop of vegetable oil into the dye before submerging the egg.
Want a natural option? Use red cabbage, turmeric, or onion skins to create earthy hues. Once dry, rub some cooking oil onto the eggs for a subtle shine.
Fun Fact: Easter eggs symbolize new life and resurrection, fitting with the Christian celebration of Easter. The tradition traces back to early Christians in Mesopotamia, who dyed eggs red to represent Christ's blood.

The CHAFE 150

"Give a kid a book, and you change the world. In a way, even the universe." –Neil
deGrasse Tyson
Originally inspired by Brad Williams, Libby, Montanian native and longtime Sandpoint resident, one local nonprofit has truly taken Tyson’s sentiment to heart. Since 2008, the CHAFE 150 Gran Fondo cyclists have swarmed the streets of Sandpoint, Idaho, through Troy, Montana, raising over $1 million in support of local education. In 2013, The Sandpoint Rotary Club took over the ride and continues to champion the cause for local youth literacy, funding projects ranging from after-school reading to programs for students on the autism spectrum, and the Book Trust.
Research has proven that early childhood literacy is key to longterm academic success. Because of the direct support of our vibrant community through fundraisers like the CHAFE 150, Lake Pend Oreille School District (LPOSD) students have far exceeded the national average for reading scores. This upcoming June 14th, the CHAFE 150’s 17th annual ride will be benefiting LPOSD’s new initiative, “Every Student Graduates a Reader.” This program uses a comprehensive approach to ensure children attain their highest reading potential. The CHAFE 150 has over six routes of different lengths on roads and gravel, including a Family Fun Ride with three starting locations, four different start times, and seven rest stops along the way. Whether you are a hard-core rider or casually coasting on an e-bike, the ride provides an accessible route for all levels of experience. An after-party at City Beach Park in Sandpoint is open to the entire community, rider or not, and features food, a beer and wine garden, and activities for children. “Support for the ride over the years has been outstanding,” says Mel, noting that this year’s event has over 115 sponsors and 120 volunteers. HealthBeauty &
AT EVERY AGE
Aging gracefully doesn’t mean going back in time; it means moving forward with courage, confidence, and good health. This is where a dedicated team of medical professionals comes in, helping you age well with the collaborative effort of their expertise. They can create customized plans to help you feel your best — from preventive medicine and nutrition to mental health and exercise. Let’s discover how this collaboration changes the game for healthy aging — and a healthier you.
Staying Ahead with Preventive Care
Healthy aging starts with prevention. Regular checkups and screenings help catch issues early, allowing you to focus on living your life instead of worrying about what’s ahead.
Doctors, geriatric specialists, and nutritionists collaborate to build preventive care plans tailored to your needs. Routine tests, such as bone density scans or cholesterol screenings, provide valuable insights. Detecting conditions like osteoporosis or high blood pressure early allows treatment to start before they become major obstacles, helping you stay active and independent. Proactive care is the cornerstone of longevity. Early detection and personalized plans enable patients to enjoy their healthiest years, regardless of age.
Nutrition: Giving Your Body the Healthy Fuel It Needs
Nutrition is one of the most critical aspects of how you’ll feel as you age. Whether it’s calcium and vitamin D for healthy bones, omega-3s for the brain and heart, or antioxidants to counteract inflammation, dietitians and nutritionists design meal plans that are jam-packed with the nutrients your body requires to thrive.
Instead of fad diets, these practitioners recommend whole, nutritional foods like powerful leafy greens, complete proteins, and healthy fat sources to provide lasting energy and wellness. If you have a restricted diet, a customized nutrition program will ensure you get your fuel without feeling deprived.
Staying Active and Building Strength
Aging doesn’t mean we stop doing things, but we should make the right choices to stay active as we get older. Physical therapists and personal fitness trainers develop workout plans that work for you and your abilities. It's important to stay active, whether it’s strength training so you don’t lose muscle, balancing exercises so you don’t fall, or even gentle workouts like yoga or swimming.
Healing from surgery or an injury? Therapists in rehabilitation can restore your function and self-assurance. They focus on recovery and help you maintain an active, fulfilling lifestyle.
Mental Health Matters
Aging well includes emotional and mental well-being. Counselors and therapists can help you manage the stress, anxiety, and loneliness that can sometimes accompany aging.

In Gig Harbor, Propper Smiles Orthodontics is a testament to Dr. Nick Propp’s lifelong dedication and ambition. A mission trip to Nicaragua sparked his path to orthodontics. There, he saw firsthand the significant difference dental care made in patients' lives, which cemented his aspiration to enter the dental field.
Dr. Propp’s strong personal connection to the importance of a smile is rooted in the legacy of his late brother, whose generosity and warm smiles made a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. This conviction in the life-changing impact of a smile fuels the mission: to instill confidence and hope in patients, paving the way for a brighter future.
Propper Smiles Orthodontics welcomes patients like family, ensuring a positive experience for everyone. Their offerings include traditional braces, Damon braces, clear braces, clear aligners, cosmetic reshaping of teeth and gums, and comprehensive treatment plans. Dr. Propp finds fulfillment in witnessing his patients' growing confidence, particularly in children and teenagers, during their pivotal developmental years. He notes, “Little by little, this newfound confidence evolves into joy and from joy into gratitude.”
“Involvement in the community is something my wife and I truly value,” says Dr. Propp. In addition to his role as an orthodontist, he prioritizes building meaningful relationships in Gig Harbor. He and his wife actively contribute by leading high school Young Life, mentoring, and supporting local youth. Their involvement extends to volunteering at community events like the Chowderfest, reinforcing their commitment to connecting with neighbors.

Social workers and community programs encourage older adults to stay engaged through activities that foster relationships and purpose. From book clubs to volunteering, staying connected keeps your mind sharp and your spirit uplifted.
Managing Chronic Conditions
Fighting a chronic illness like arthritis, diabetes, or heart disease doesn’t have to translate into lower quality of life. Work with collaborative care teams — specialists, primary care physicians, pharmacists — to tailor treatments to your lifestyle.
Technology also plays a role; telemedicine and wearables track your health remotely for convenience and security, providing real-time insights and ensuring you stay connected to your care team for ongoing support and monitoring.
Take Care of Your Brain as Much As Your Body
Neurology is one of the most essential components of aging. Brain doctors and cognitive therapists offer the best tricks for keeping the
mind active, whether solving puzzles, honing new skills, or simply remaining social.
The foods you eat can also support a healthier brain. Berries, walnuts, fatty fish, and other nutrient-rich foods have been shown to help improve memory. For those already experiencing memory loss symptoms, specialists can help with techniques and plans to slow the process and preserve independence.
Personalized Aging Plans
Collaborative care thrives on personalization. Your medical team considers your genetics, lifestyle, and objectives to devise a plan tailored just for you. Whether preventive, dietary, or therapeutic, your plan should be designed to help you thrive.
Healthy aging isn’t just about adding years to your life—it’s about thriving in those years. With the support of medical professionals, you can embrace the best years of your life with vitality and confidence. Partner with your care team, prioritize your health and make aging well your goal every step of the way.
Providing patients a neurological and holistic approach to physical therapy, A2 Physical Therapy has a mission to provide the highest level of physical therapy and wellness services, ensuring continuity of care while never prioritizing profits over people. Your health is their commitment.

Fun Fact
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge gained the nickname Galloping Gertie due to the dramatic oscillations and twisting motions it exhibited shortly after its construction. The original bridge, completed in July 1940, collapsed four months later, on November 7, 1940, during a windstorm. Its failure became a landmark case in engineering and is widely studied in structural dynamics and aerodynamics. The nickname highlights the bridge’s unintended and extreme movements before its collapse.

• 4–5 fresh mint leaves • 2–3 fresh basil leaves
• 1 oz fresh lime juice (about one lime)
• 1/2 oz elderflower syrup (or elderflower cordial)
• 4 oz sparkling water (or soda water)
• Cucumber slices for garnish • Ice cubes
1. In a sturdy glass or cocktail shaker, gently muddle the mint and basil leaves with the lime juice to release their flavors. Be careful not to over-muddle, as it can make the drink bitter.
2. Stir in the elderflower syrup.
3. If using a cocktail shaker, add ice and shake gently to mix. If not, simply stir the mixture well in the glass.
4. Strain (if desired) into a glass filled with fresh ice. Top with sparkling water.
5. Garnish with a few cucumber slices and a sprig of mint for an aromatic touch!
RECIPE
INSTRUCTIONS:
Step 1: Make the Crust
1. Combine Ingredients: In a food processor or mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the cold butter and pulse or mix with a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
2. Add Water: Gradually add the ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough comes together but isn’t sticky.
3. Chill: Form the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Step 2: Prepare the Filling
1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
2. Sauté Vegetables: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add asparagus and sauté for 3 minutes until tender-crisp. Stir in spinach until just wilted. Remove from heat and set aside.
Step 3: Assemble the Quiche
INGREDIENTS:
For the Crust
• 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt
8 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed
3–4 tablespoons ice water
For the Filling
1 tablespoon olive oil
• 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
• 1/4 cup green onions, thinly sliced
• 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
• 4 large eggs
• 1 cup heavy cream
• 1/2 cup whole milk
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
• 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup asparagus, trimmed and chopped into 1-inch pieces 1/2 cup baby spinach, roughly chopped
• 3/4 cup shredded Gruyère or cheddar cheese
• 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Step 4: Prepare the Egg Mixture
1. Whisk Eggs and Cream: In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
2. Layer Ingredients: Sprinkle Gruyère cheese evenly over the crust. Layer the sautéed vegetables, cherry tomatoes, green onions, and parsley. Pour the egg mixture over the vegetables, ensuring it’s evenly distributed. Top with Parmesan cheese.
1. Roll Out the Dough: Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface into a 12-inch circle. Fit it into a 9-inch pie pan or tart pan, trimming the excess edges. Prick the bottom with a fork.
2. Blind Bake: Line the crust with parchment paper and fill with pie weights or dried beans. Bake for 10 minutes, remove the weights, and bake for another 5 minutes until lightly golden.
Step 5: Bake the Quiche
1. Bake: Place the quiche in the oven and bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the center is just set and the top is lightly golden.
2. Cool: Let the quiche cool for 10 minutes before slicing.
Enoy! Serve warm or at room temperature for breakfast, brunch, or a light dinner. Pair with a fresh spring salad for a complete meal!
Gig Harbor Golf Club: A Family-Centered Golfing Community
Where great golf meets great company
courtesy of GIG HARBOR GOLF CLUB
Gig Harbor Golf Club (GHGC) has undergone an evolution in recent years, driven by the efforts of its dedicated leader, who has transformed it into a true family-centric haven. The club offers a welcoming and inclusive environment for golfers of all ages and skill levels, and focuses on creating familyfriendly events and gatherings. The sense of community at GHGC is evident in the everyday going-ons of the club and its members. The club has a long history of supporting its younger members, including the Gig Harbor High School golf programs.
Kim Titus, a former club president and long-time member, has witnessed the resurgence of golf both nationally and at GHGC. She recognizes the club’s commitment to providing a top-notch golfing experience with excellent course conditions and competitive pricing that appeals to families and individuals seeking a convenient and enjoyable round of golf. Kim grew up at the club and reflects on how supportive it has always been of its younger members.
“Since beginning golf at GHGC in 1974, I was provided a great support system from the professional golf staff, family, friends, and members who wanted to see me excel in golf. We had a junior golf program, and the Women’s Association allowed me to play with them during league play. I played on the boy’s golf team
in high school, as there was no separate team for girls. GHGC has always supported these school teams.”
Kim noted that times have changed at Gig Harbor High School (GHHS), where the girls’ golf team has evolved, and their 2024 season was a testament to that progress. They earned both an academic championship and four top-ten finishes in the league. Members of both girls’ and boys’ golf teams at GHHS, many of whom have been playing at the club since childhood, regularly express their appreciation for the opportunities provided by the club. The teams have benefited from the club’s welcoming environment and access to practice facilities, which are not easily available on crowded public courses.
Membership Director and Clubhouse Manager Jackie Scothorn believes that the shift towards a more women-centric leadership has been instrumental in ensuring the club evolves to meet the changing needs of its members and their families. She understands the critical role spouses play in decision-making when families consider membership and the appeal of family-oriented events to accommodate the entire family. Jackie has been instrumental in creating family-fun activities ranging from holiday celebrations and fun social outings to privately sponsored events.
Jackie says, “There’s a lot to love about this club, and we want to make sure people understand that it’s not just a place to golf, but a space where families come together, and friendships are built. If you have an active family with children, you’ll love Gig Harbor Golf Club!”
As the Club has doubled in size over the past few years, it has been critical that its policies meet the demanding need for an active membership. Kathleen Carlson, a GHGC Board member and business leader, has been instrumental in creating a welcoming governance model at the club. The club’s bylaws and policies are designed to cater to the entire family, with family memberships encouraging members of all ages to come and enjoy the facilities, whether on the golf course or during social activities. The Junior Executive Membership is geared toward young families, allowing them to grow with the club. Incremental increases in their dues obligations
over time help younger members attain a full membership as they become more established in their lives.
Chris Hanson-Hughes, chair of the membership committee, emphasizes the importance of preserving the club’s family-oriented culture, which is rooted in the local community that built it. Although a private facility, GHGC is not just an elite club, but one that respects each of its members and provides a welcoming space for families to come together and enjoy the game of golf. Under Chris’s guidance, the club has grown its membership size in recent years while maintaining a commitment to providing its members immediate access to the course.
This focus on community and member experience has been a key driver of GHGC’s success. Gig Harbor Golf Club is a true family-oriented oasis where the common thread of golf brings people together and fosters a strong sense of community. With its dedicated leaders, family-centric policies, and commitment to providing an exceptional golfing experience, GHGC remains a cherished asset to the community.
If you’re interested in joining Gig Harbor Golf Club, contact Jackie at clubhouse@ghgolfclub.com today! Membership is limited, and the club operates on a membership-by-invitation policy.

2025 Celebrates the 92nd Year of The Daffodil Festival
This year’s Grand Floral Parade is set for Saturday, April 5, 2025, and promises a vibrant celebration of spring. Rain or shine, the parade will make its way through:
• Tacoma at 10:15 am
• Puyallup at 12:45 pm
• Sumner at 2:30 pm
• Orting at 5:00 pm
The Daffodil Festival has endured, with parades held every year since 1934, with the exception of the war years of 1943-1945 and 2020 due to the global pandemic. This event remains a cornerstone of Pierce County culture, celebrated as a premier headline attraction second only to the Washington State Fair.
Join us in honoring this longstanding tradition and celebrating the beauty and heritage of the Pacific Northwest. For more information, visit TheDaffodilFestival.org.
